Sulthan Bathery

Sulthan Bathery is situated about 100 km  from Kozhikode on NH212 and it was earlier known as Ganapathivattom. The place owes its new name to the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, who during his invasion of the Malabar region dumped his ammunition and parked his artillery battering in an old Jain temple here. The place was hence known as Sulthan Bathery which is a corrupted form of Sultan’s battery. Tipu Sultan also built a fort here, which is in ruins now and a police station stands on the mounds of the fort now.  Situated at an altitude of 1000m above sea level, Sulthan Bathery enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year. The topography interwoven with valleys, plains and mountainous terrain enchants any visitor here. Once known as a strategic location in the Malabar region, Sulthan Bathery is now the largest town in Wayanad district and is known for its tourism and commercial activities. The pre-historic caves, jungle trails, sparkling streams and rivers and lush greenery of the undulating hills draw a lot of tourists to the region every year. Though tribes constitute the majority of the population, Sulthan Bathery also houses a settler population (those who migrated from various parts of Kerala). The main occupation of the people here is agriculture. The place is well connected with various places with the NH 212 Kozhikode – Mysore National Highway.  There is also another road that branches off from Sulthan Bathery and leads to Gudallur in Tamil Nadu.  Accommodation options too are available in the town. There are various resorts and government guest houses and budget hotels in the area.

  • 11.6258 76.2356 4 Edakkal Caves . 9AM-4PM (last entry) . This must-see location of breathtaking beauty in the Ambukuthy Mountain is not a cave in the real sense. As stated in the India Antiquary, it is only a cleft about 96 ft long and 22 ft wide in the rock. The name Edakkal (Eda+kal) means "middle of the rock". It is a fissure made by a corner of rock splitting off from the main Entrance to Edakkal Caves due to some natural causes. The depth of the cleft and the fissure is 30 ft. What makes it a cave to the ordinary observer is the fact that in the other portion of the large cleft, an enormous rock, weighing several tonnes, has fallen forming a roof over a large part of it. The rock wall contains some interesting carvings, which represent human and animal figures and objects of human use and symbols. These carvings, dating to the Neolithic age (6000 BC), speak of a highly civilized people of pre-historic age and inspires the archaeologists and historians to rewrite the history of Wayanad and Kerala as a whole. Specifically, look out for the carvings interpreted as the woman with the jug, the sun, the chieftain, the animal, and the peacock. The caves were discovered in 1894 by an English police superintendent named Fred Fawcett. The story goes that he discovered a hunting axe, which eventually led to the discovery of the caves. However, the caves were taken over by Archeological Survey of India only in 1984, so some vandalism can also be spotted on the walls. A vertical cleft near one of the corners offers a rare view of Wayanad. These caves are said to have been frequented by Jain monks at a later age. The guard at the caves may be ready to help out with information. The caves are accessible now with steep but strong steps. There are excellent views of Wayanad on the way up, and there are a separate set of steps leading down as a faster route ₹30 . ( updated Oct 2017 )

sulthan bathery wayanad places to visit

Sulthan Bathery: UDF Lok Sabha candidate for Wayanad constituency, Rahul Gandhi, has arrived. Rahul reached Nilgiris from Mysore via helicopter. After Rahul Gandhi’s landing, the waiting election flying squad conducted inspection in the helicopter.

After visiting plantation workers and local residents, Rahul held a massive road show in Sulthan Bathery. Rahul’s roadshow will extend to places like Pulpally, Mananthavady, Vellamunda, etc.

Gandhi is scheduled to address a farmers' rally in nearby Pulpally, predominantly an agrarian sector which has a great presence of farmers, later in the day.

He is also expected to take out road shows in Mananthavady, Vellamunda and Padinjarathara and address party workers there, Congress sources said.

During the visit, Gandhi is also likely to hold a meeting with Mananthavady bishop, which is politically significant in the wake of raging controversy over the recent screening of the movie 'The Kerala Story' by some churches.

Later in the evening, the Congress leader would address a rally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in neighbouring Kozhikode district.

Gandhi, who is seeking his electoral luck again from Wayanad, came to the constituency for the second time after the date of the Lok Sabha polls were announced.

The Congress leader had kicked off the poll campaign in Wayanad early this month by filing his nomination papers and holding a massive road show.

Gandhi won from Wayanad with a record margin of 4,31,770 votes during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Polling in Kerala's 20 Lok Sabha seats will be held on April 26. (Inputs from PTI)

The BJP has called for changing the name of Sulthan Bathery town in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, arguing that it was originally known as Ganapathivattom before Tipu Sultan's invasion of the Malabar region two centuries ago. BJP state president K Surendran, contesting against Rahul Gandhi and Annie Raja in Wayanad, raised the issue, stating that the town should be called by its original name. He criticized Congress and LDF for referring to it as Sulthan Bathery, highlighting Tipu Sultan's historical invasion and conversion of people in Kerala.

The story behind Sulthan Bathery and why BJP's K Surendran wants to rename it Ganapathyvattam

 alt=

Wayanad: A non-descript town in Northern Kerala, located 28 km away from Kalpetta in Wayanad sparked a debate after the BJP state president and NDA candidate in Wayanad said his poll priority will be to change the name of Sulthan Bathery to Ganapathyvattam if elected.

According to veteran historian Prof T Mohanbabu, who is also a native of Sulthan Bathery, the name Sulthan Bathery evolved from the artillery battery of Tipu Sultan which was established in a dilapidated Jain temple, on the town premises. Before that, the place was known as Ganapathyvattam, as there was a small temple of Lord Ganesha, here.

Until the 1950s the temple was a major landmark for troops, planters and traders from Mysore to Kozhikode. The temple was later renamed as Maha Ganapathy Temple after a major renovation.

The British started calling the place Sultan’s Battery which gradually came to be known as Sulthan Bathery. There were differences of opinion among historians on the status of the Jain temple, as some said the temple was demolished by Tipu Sultan and converted it to a battery to keep his armaments, whereas others said Tipu Sultan only converted the abandoned Jain temple into a battery since by the time of his invasion it had been abandoned.

It was during an interview with a national news channel on Wednesday that Surendran had stated the necessity of rechristening the town as Ganapathyvattam. “It is not the land of Tipu Sultan who had massacred Hindus and Christians,” he said.

In a press conference held at Thamarassery in Kozhikode district on Thursday Surendran reiterated his stand, triggering intense reactions from various corners. Congress leaders laughed at the statement, saying that Surendran has nothing to offer to people, apart from such jokes.

District Congress Committee president N D Appachan who is also the treasurer of Rahul Gandhi’s election campaign committee told Onmanorama that as Surendran has already confirmed his defeat in the poll fray, Surendran can afford such irresponsible jokes.

Congress leader T Siddique MLA said Surendran is trying to divert the attention of people from all other vital issues. “While Congress is on with a campaign against the failure of NDA regime and the series of corruptions of BJP, there is no other go for Surendran, but to raise such trivial issues,'' he said.

Tipu Sultan and how a Wayanad town became Sulthan Bathery

Kerala bjp chief k surendran said his priority would be to change the name of sulthan bathery, a town in wayanad constituency, to its original ganapathi vattam. how did ganapathi vattam become sulthan bathery, and what has tipu sultan got to do with it.

Listen to Story

sulthan bathery jain temple ganpati vattom tipu sultan

Tipu Sultan has now made an appearance in the battle of Wayanad.

After playing a role in Karnataka politics for years, it seems Tipu Sultan has expanded his territory to the neighbouring state of Kerala this Lok Sabha poll season.

K Surendran, the Kerala BJP chief, sparked a row by saying that it would be his priority to change the name of the Kerala town in Wayanad district, Sulthan Bathery, to Ganapathi Vattam, if he wins the Wayanad seat.

Surendran is the BJP's candidate from Wayanad and has been fielded against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate, Annie Raja, in a three-cornered fight.

It was Surendran who brought up the Tipu Sultan reference during a poll rally on Thusrday.

"Who is Tipu Sultan? When it comes to Wayanad and its people, what is its importance? That place was known as Ganapathi Vattam. People are aware and are used to this name Ganapathi Vattam. That has been renamed," Surendran said.

HISTORY OF WAYANAD'S SULTHAN BATHERY

The story of Sulthan Bathery is rich and complex. The town, with its Neolithic roots, has been shaped by the diverse cultures of the tribals, attackers, and colonial rulers.

Sulthan Bathery, Kerala's cleanest town, was actually once a dumping ground for arms and ammunition during the Mysore rule of Malabar (north Kerala), says the official website of Kerala Tourism.

The artillery battering in the town took place at a place which was once a Jain Temple, claimed BJP's Sundaran.

The town was originally known as Ganapathyvattam, named after the Ganapati temple that once stood there, according to Sulthan Bathery's municipal website.

However, during Tipu Sultan's invasion of the Malabar region in the second half of the 1700s, the town was on Tipu Sultan's route to the region, where the Mysore king was headed to suppress a rebellion.

Tipu's military used the town of Ganapathyvattam as a place to store its battery (cluster of canons), and the town came to be known as ‘Sulthan's Battery', according to British colonial records.

Tipu Sultan also built a fort there, which is now in ruins.

He set up his battery at this site, and today the entirety of Sulthan Bathery is named after the same and is now the official name of the town, which the BJP leader seeks to change.

TIPU'S SULTHAN BATHERY AND A 13TH CENTURY JAIN TEMPLE

The town is also of importance to the Jain community. A Jain Temple, dating back to the 13th century, is said to have been built during the reign of the Vijayanagar Dynasty.

The temple is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

The town of Ganapathyvattam, on the route between Mysore and the ports of the Arabian Sea, also gained prominence as a trading centre and a stopover.

Ganapativattam's significance and relevance are frequently cited in reports, with British records mentioning a police picket situated in an area named, 'Ganapatipalayam', according to the website of the Sulthan Bathery municipality.

As a result, the British adopted the name Sulthan Bathery as the name of the town, given it housed Tipu Sultan's armoury at Ganapativattam.

Later, British gazettes and historians referred the town to as Sulthan's Battery.

However, Surendran's statement regarding the name change drew criticism from the Left and the Congress.

"It's Kerala right. This is Kerala. You know, right? It will not happen. He won't win anyway, and he won't change the name either," Indian Union Muslim League general secretary PK Kunhalikutty said.

Congress leader and MLA T Siddique termed Sundaran's remark as nothing but an "attempt to grab public attention".
