Arctic Finland trip with Swain Destinations

My family of four traveled with Swain Destinations to Finland in December 2021. It was just when Omicron was spiking in Europe and we were nervous at first but the Swain team walked us through all the protocols and because we felt like we were going to be in a very remote area (Finnish Lapland, in the Arctic Circle) we went on the trip anyway. When I say it was the best trip our family has ever gone on, I am not exaggerating. Everything from the moment we landed in Rovaniemi to the day we returned home was so special. Our guide, Miikka, was so caring and flexible, always making suggestions based on the days' weather and working so hard to ensure we would see the Northern Lights, despite December being a difficult month to get to see them. The food from our private chef at our chalet was AMAZING. We gave Swain Destinations our preferences and dietary requirements prior to traveling and everything was prepared exactly to our needs, and was still authentic, locally sourced and delicious. Every activity that was arranged was so wonderful - from the activities themselves being unique and in the beautiful Arctic setting, to the individuals who led the activities being legitimate Sami reindeer herders, champion husky mushers, and so on. I cannot speak highly enough of just how moved we were as a family to have these experiences together. We wrapped up our trip in Helsinki and got to experience the Christmas Markets and even Finland Day, which was beautiful and touching. I have to say that I thought a trip to the Arctic would be one and done, but now I want to go again in a few years when our children are old enough to do some of the more active experiences like ice-track racing, and helicoptering over the North Pole! We are already planning our next Swain Destinations trip, and cannot wait to see what they offer elsewhere, but I highly highly recommend their Finland experiences.

South Africa

Our trip that Swain Destinations planned to Africa was great from start to end. Planning was very easy and the entire trip was seamless. We were there almost three weeks and stayed in 6 different locations. We never had to worry about our next location or any logistics in moving from place to place. All internal transfers and flights were handled and everything was planned out down to the small details.

Everything went well on the trip

Everything went well on the trip. Loved Salamanca Inn and Strahan Village especially. Only criticism I have is that Swain pushes towards high-end options; in some cases they provide only high-end options. I was able to suggest and renegotiate these, and in one case, find an alternative option that Swain was unable to provide. For non-travel savvy or less tech-savvy people, this would be a real problem.

Australian DREAM VACATION!

Australian DREAM VACATION!! The Swain Destinations team took a 28 year old dream of two young kids, and turned it into a trip of a lifetime. They are a true CLASS ACT and have earned my business from here on out. They scheduled 15 days of Australia, starting in Sydney, migrating to Ayers Rock, then Cairns to Port Douglas, Brisbane and back to the US. Site seeing, hiking mountains, hugging koalas, diving the great barrier reef, dinner cruise, car service....I cant tell you how impressed I was that everyone from age 12 - 72 was included in EVERY activity - EVEN THE ZIP LINING!! GREAT JOB!

Trouble free Tokyo

Swain took my requests for Tokyo less than 10 days before we arrived and provided us with a three day trouble free plan which included everything we wanted to see and more. The best part was the young lady who was our personal English speaking guide in Tokyo. She spoke perfect English, we understood every word she said, she provided us with lots of hints and tips and made sure we did not stray out into traffic, She found some wonderful Japanese dining places - authentic food which we loved! We had a car and driver as well, so were able to keep our purchases and bags in the car. Great itinerary, lovely people, hassle free visit, and we got to the ship on time!

All around excellent!

We have used Swain Destinations for over a dozen trips to Africa, Australia/NZ and India. Never once on any of them has any single arrangement (accommodations, rides, guides, etc) ever not worked perfectly. It's hard to get better than that!

Perfection in Australia and New Zealand

The trip my daughter and I took to Australia and New Zealand was flawless. Everything they did from arranging private transport in luxury cars to and from the airports and hotels, to making sure we had breakfast included in every hotel package (even ones we picked over theirs) was First Class. Well worth the price which was very reasonable for all the premium services we enjoyed. I would highly recommend (and I have many times to others). A better travel agency does not exist.

What a trip

Super people to work with who put together a great trip that we will always remember. They know the best places to stay and the best things to do and the 28 day trip they put together for us included all of them. Due to weather problems our flight was a day late getting to Australia and we had a trip to look for Koloa bears that we were going to miss and Swain made arrangements for our driver to pick us up from the airport and drive us out of the city to catch up with out tour. Normal tour operations don't do this.

The direction and assistance I received …

The direction and assistance I received from Ian Swain for my group of 7 was spot on. Though they ended up changing out 2 tours while there, the tours booked were what they originally requested. The clients commented on the great serviced from Canterbury Trails guide, Irene, as well as the last 2 Luxury Lodges they stayed, Otahuna and Blanket Bay. I had an unusual request for stocking a villa for their stay in Blenheim and that was done efficiently through Swain and Canterbury. Absolutely no complaints with the service. Ian responded to me even if he was traveling.

PERFECT VACATION

Swain did an excellent job planning our trip to Vietnam. EVERYTHING went smoothly from beginning to end. We had no worries in an unfamiliar foreign country. The local guides and drivers were terrific. I would definitely use Swain in the future and I recommend using them.

I think this is for the India trip?

I am not sure which trip this rating is for, but I think India for Girdley. I thought Bela was ok. She could have been a bit more informative on crafting the itinerary in that my clients stayed 2 nts at the Camel fare in Pushkar but could have done it in 1. So my clients left early and paid an additional $750 for 1 night at Udaipur instead. THEN Bela didn't even inform me of the change which was a bit embarrassing when the client told me. I would expect someone at Swain would have advised me. Bela did, after I called her out on it, apologize.

Our normal recommendation for travelers wishing to experience the Camel Fair in Pushkar is to stay two nights, so clients do not feel as if they are rushed, seeing as there is so much activity at the fair. We do realize that every traveler is different and appreciate that the Girdleys felt the one night was sufficient. Sheila O'Brian Egan President & Owner

Sheila has traveled to many places…. by land, air, and sea. She has cruised extensively with many different cruise lines to Alaska, the Panama Canal, Caribbean and Greek islands, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. With Crystal Cruises being her favorite. Most recently her travels have taken her to Scotland, England, Wales, and a fabulous villa vacation with friends in Tuscany, Italy. Sheila has traveled extensively along the Italian Amalfi Coast, visiting the magnificent towns of Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi, as well as the Isle of Capri!

Sheila also enjoys European River Cruising and has cruised on the Danube & Rhine River and the Amsterdam ‘Tulip Time Cruise’ with her Gutsy Ladies! The Gutsy Ladies are a group of women who Sheila personally escorts to a special destination each year. Some of those destinations have included Cinque Terre, Portofino, England, Amsterdam, Paris, Scotland, Spain, Portugal and Wales – just to name a few….! This Year, Sheila is Traveling with her Gutsy Ladies on a Ponant Cruise from Iceland to Edinburgh.

Sheila’s most favorite trips have been aboard small Barge cruises, less than 10 guests traveling thru Champagne region of France and the Loire Valley, just unbelievable and 5 *** all the way around.! She also arranged and escorted a trip for the Nantucket Historical Association to the Azores and New Zealand and for the Maria Mitchell Association to the Galapagos Island. Sheila, is avid golfer and has arranged many golf trips over the years to Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Spain and the Dominican Republic.

Sheila has achieved the highest levels of accreditation in the travel industry… including Master Cruise Counselor and Certified Travel Counselor. Judy Wodynski Travel Consultant

Judy, a most seasoned traveler, who has worked travel business for many years, enthusiastically began learning the ins and outs of the travel business. After having spent more than 35 years in Development in Higher Education, and numerous other nonprofits, Judy just loves the travel business and making clients dreams come true.

She loves to cruise and travel around the world and has been doing it since she was a child when her grandfather was a Travel Agent. Judy spent many summers in Italy with family. Since getting married she and her husband have become great cruise fans and have traveled around the world on luxury cruise ships. In her life time, she has visited over 60 countries and loves traveling around the South Seas. Judy has only missed traveling to two states in the USA, Alaska and North Dakota which she hopes to visit soon.

Judy and her husband latest cruise was a 52-day cruise on the Queen Mary II, going half-way around the world following the route of many of the Whaling ships out of Nantucket which has given her a new respect for those brave whalers.

Her favorite places to travel are Japan, Australia, and Italy, Key West FL and Scottsdale AZ.

Debra Klingsporn Travel Consultant

My love affair with travel and new experiences began well before I could walk when my family tent-camped everywhere from Padre Island National Seashore to the mountains of Colorado. I could build a blazing campfire before I knew my multiplication tables.

Adventuresome tent camping gave way to business travel, taking me across the country from New York City to San Francisco, Southern California to Washington, D.C., as a young marketing and public relations executive within the publishing world. I have also traveled between Nairobi and the White Mountains of Kenya, Africa, as well as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic. Along with my husband of 40+ years, we have traveled throughout Ireland (a personal favorite), the Aran Islands, Scotland and the unusual remote Isle of Iona, and are looking forward to adding Italy and France to our travel experiences soon.

Before my Career in the Travel Industry, my professional background included more than 40 years in communications. Once I “semi-retired into motherhood,” I left corporate communications and moved into full-time writing, editing, and collaborating on more than fourteen books. I'm seriously addicted to knitting, love strong dark coffee, fine wines, and any opportunity to travel to new places. My last trip to Ireland was escorting five knitters and one photographer on a knitting tour of Southern Ireland, including visiting a working sheep farm and touring two of Ireland's historic woolen mills.

I bring a creative, “can-do, make-it-happen” adaptability and enthusiasm to travel planning and I'm ready and waiting to help you plan your next big adventure!

Barbara Maffei Travel Consultant

After 16 years of living on Nantucket, I first relocated to Pinehill’s, in Plymouth, MA and now I call home Vero Beach, Florida. After being bitten by the travel bug, many years ago and working in the travel and tourism business, my love for travel began. I have traveled extensively and frequently on many journeys to Europe including numerous trips to Italy and France. One of my most wonderful experiences was a journey on a European River Cruise from Prague to Budapest, which was "magnificent"!!!

I also enjoying traveling on “Girlfriend Getaways” at least once a year. Last year we visited Portugal and had a wonderful time. Great hotels, exceptional sightseeing/ guides, beautiful weather, and fine wines. Ireland is next on the list.

I have also enjoyed many great cruises especially on Viking Ocean Cruises, with their Cuba cruise and Caribbean Cruises, among my favorites. The size of the Viking Ocean ships is just perfect.

Please give me a call if you want to know about shopping in Florence, buying Limoncello in Sorrento, wine tasting in Tuscany or a barge cruise through Champagne Country in France. I also have many other fabulous ideas. Let's Travel!!!

Born in the United Kingdom and raised in the warm heart of Africa.

My love of travel began many years ago. Since I was a young girl I have traveled extensively all over Southern Africa (Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Kenya and Zambia) and throughout the islands of the Indian Ocean (Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Reunion and Madagascar) Just Fabulous!

Met my soulmate in Johannesburg in my early twenties and immigrated to the USA in the late 90’s settling in Nantucket, Massachusetts. I have enjoyed exploring the great United States of America and my most recent vacations abroad were to Accra, Ghana and Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai UAE.

My bucket list includes hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, Turkey, travelling by train over the Nine Arch bridge between Demodara and Ella in Sri Lanka and a Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary from Southampton to New York.

Stan Harvey Travel Consultant

Stan, has worked for Swain’s Travel for over 20 years, wearing several various hats! He is very flexible with his time and stops by whenever he's needed.

Last year, Stan traveled with a small group on a Seabourn Cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong (before COVID!) over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Because he and his family love Seabourn, two years ago, they went on a Seabourn Cruise from Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina with stops along the way including white water rafting in Chile, and Zodiac landings in Antarctica and South Georgia Islands. Highlights included wandering around with the penguins in Antarctica, watching ice bergs over a mile long float by, whale sightings, a visit to the former whaling station at Grytvikken , as well as wildlife viewing ashore of the vast breeding colonies of various penguin species, albatrosses and other seabirds and mammals including fur seals and elephant seals.

Stan, recently organized a group of ten people on a classic wooden yacht, the Grace, in the Galapagos through International Expeditions. Everyone had a wonderful trip and a fun experience. The shore excursion, dining and naturalist/guides were fantastic!

Past trips include an amazing cruise from Auckland to Sydney on a Seabourn Cruise and a Windstar cruise from St. Maarten that he thought had a great itinerary, including stops on Antigua and St. Barth's.

Stan is originally from Florida, where he has a winter home. His favorite places to go include St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the South of France, which he tries to make at least twice a year. Recent side trips include Corsica, Sardinia, Portofino, Bellagio on Lake Como, and St. Remy de Provence for the Fête de la Transhumance.

His Favorite trips have included: charter boat sailing along the Dalmatian Coast from Dubrovnik to Venice, bicycling from Prague to Vienna with Butterfield and Robinson, bare-boat chartering in the Virgin Islands, and visits to Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

Stan, is a jack of all trades at Swains Travel, also assisting with the office website, technical issue, and planning clients’ travel.
