Taylor Swift is readying her passport! The pop star announced her first round of international tour dates for The Eras Tour on Friday morning.

Following the completion of her U.S. circuit, Swift will travel first to Mexico, and then to Argentina and Brazil, continuing the tour through November 2023. Per Friday's press release, additional international tour dates will be announced soon.

Swift, 33, most recently performed three nights of  The Eras Tour at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will now head to Soldier Field in Chicago this weekend. The U.S. portion of the tour will end at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Aug. 9.

Per the release, Swift's new international dates will also feature support from Sabrina Carpenter .

The following week, Swift will finish the additional dates at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil, on Nov. 25 and 26.

General sale for Argentina and presale for Brazil will begin Tuesday June 6. Fans who purchased tickets for Swift's concerts in Brazil that were canceled in 2020 will have the opportunity to access an exclusive pre-sale for The Eras Tour.

Swift recently made headlines when  Forbes   named her one of the richest self-made women in America, alongside other entertainers including  Rihanna ,  Beyonce ,  Kim Kardashian ,  Oprah Winfrey  and more.

Swift is worth an estimated $740 million thanks to her music empire. She's ranked 34th on the all-encompassing list and only second, behind Rihanna, of the musicians.

Over the last year, Swift shattered records with the release of her 10th studio album,  Midnights , and  rocked Ticketmaster  with overwhelming fan demand for tickets to  The Eras Tour . Meanwhile, Swift continues on her journey of re-recording her old albums to regain their ownership rights --  Speak Now (Taylor's Version) will release July 7.

Ticket prices to see Taylor Swift in Brazil are dropping

Taylor Swift — and her ticket prices — are going south.

On Nov. 24-26, the 12-time Grammy winner is performing back-to-back-to-back ‘Eras Tour’ concerts at Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Allianz Parque with special guest Sabrina Carpenter .

And if you held out to buy tickets until the last minute, you’re in luck.

Prices have plummeted for two of her three gigs this Thanksgiving weekend.

At the time of publication, you can find tickets for as low as $359 USD before fees on Vivid Seats.

Earlier this week, prices began at $418 before fees.

Quick math will tell you that’s a cool savings of $59.

Not bad for waiting a mere 96 hours.

Sometimes “all of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation” as Tay Tay sings in “Dress,” really does pay off.

Want a closer look at how much tickets cost over Swift’s two days of shows at Palmeiras’ home field?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more below about Taylor’s Sao Paulo ‘Era’ below.

All prices listed below are subject to fluctuation.

A complete breakdown of what ticket prices are now versus what they cost on Monday, Nov. 20 for each of Taylor’s three Brazil concerts can be found below.

show datesTicket prices start at

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

After this three-show weekend, Swift has 71 (!) concerts remaining on her international schedule.

You can find a complete calendar of all remaining ‘Eras Tour’ dates here .

Plus, as an added bonus, we a)  shared some helpful tips from a Swiftie  who made it out to to see Taylor way back on the first weekend of the U.S. leg of the tour and b)  came up with a list of all the most exciting fan trends .

At all three shows in Sao Paulo, Swift will be joined by special guest Sabrina Carpenter.

Carpenter, 24, isn’t just a singer though. Over the past decade, she’s also starred in the Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World” and the feature film “The Hate U Give.”

if you’re more interested in her music, we recommend you check out her biggest singles  “On My Way,”  “Nonsense”  and  “Thumbs.”

Prefer something a bit more long-form?

You can find her 2023 album “emails i cant send fwd:”  right here .

This trio of Sao Paulo shows comes on the heels of Swift’s mini-residency at Rio de Janeiro’s Estadio Nilton Santos where she encountered tragedy; on Friday, Nov. 17, a young fan died due to extreme temperatures.

As a result, she postponed her Saturday concert.

“I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio,” she shared via Instagram.

“The safety and well being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first.”

According to  NPR , fans were not allowed to bring water into venue.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The deaths of two people, muggings and a dangerous heat wave left legions of Taylor Swift’s Brazilian fans angry and disappointed in the three-day Rio de Janeiro leg of the pop superstar’s Eras Tour, which concludes Monday night.

Gabriel Mongenot Santana Milhomem Santos, 25, a fan who had traveled from the country’s center-west region to see Swift, was stabbed to death on a Copacabana beach about 3 a.m. Monday, Rio’s police said in a statement.

It was the second death of a Swift fan in four days. On Friday, 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado fell ill during the singer’s first show in the city, and died later that evening at a hospital.

Fans also reported fainting from extreme heat , being mugged or getting caught up in a police raid.

Rio’s Municipal Health Department said Benevides, who, according to a friend, passed out during Swift’s second song, “Cruel Summer,” experienced cardiorespiratory arrest, but the exact cause of her death is not yet known. Rio’s Forensic Medical Institute examined the body Saturday and said additional laboratory tests had to be conducted, the online news site G1 reported.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Swift said Benevides’ death left her with a “shattered heart.”

Before the show Friday, fans lined up for hours outside the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium where temperatures soared to 41 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit), with a heat index of nearly 59 C (138 F). Inside the stadium, concertgoers complained of unbearable heat and some said they had difficulty getting access to water.

“I didn’t imagine that my dream could turn into a nightmare,” said fan Kléssia Menezes, who told R7 TV that she had gotten stuck with hundreds of other people on one of the ramps to a VIP area Saturday as security officers blocked the entrance.

Once security let them through, she said, people started running and she fell on a hot metallic floor that burned her leg and back.

“They took me to the doctor ... and I saw that I wasn’t the only person to have fallen in this chaos,” she said. “Many people fell and burned themselves.”

Ultimately, that night’s show was postponed , after tens of thousands of fans had spent hours lining up in the heat. Swift announced on Instagram that it was necessary “due to the extreme temperatures in Rio.”

A fan who identified herself as Julia Alvarenga said she was upset that Swift didn’t decide to cancel earlier.

“My friend, can you see how much I’m sweating, how all the pores in my body are dilated from the sweat?” Alvarenga asked, visibly angry, in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. She then pointed to her waist, highlighting the extreme measures she had taken to attend a concert for which she knew she would stand in line for hours. “I’m wearing a diaper, a geriatric diaper,” she says, urging the artist to appear. “Come on stage, I want to see you!”

The postponement was followed by chaos outside the stadium. Under a light rain, a mass of concertgoers left the area, which is close to one of Rio’s working-class neighborhoods, known as favelas.

Videos shared on social media showed groups of pickpockets robbing fans of their belongings, scenes not so unusual to Rio residents, but far from the postcards many tourists have seen of the “cidade maravilhosa.”

Many took refuge inside a Burger King, ducking for cover under tables and behind the counter in the kitchen area. Heavily armed police raided the fast food restaurant’s basement as loud sirens blared and those stuck outside the restaurant shouted. Some of those who were able to escape in taxis were overcharged by the drivers.

Saturday’s show was postponed to Monday night, but many who had traveled from other regions of Brazil and outside the country had already made plans to leave earlier.

“We’re not going to be able to make it,” said Hely Olivares, a 41 year-old Venezuelan who had traveled from Panama. “A lot of people have wasted their journey.”

Taylor Swift Bringing Eras Tour to Mexico, Argentina, Brazil

The rolling phenomenon that is the Taylor Swift Eras Tour will open in Chicago tonight, but fans far south of the windy city are celebrating as well this weekend. Swift announced Friday that the tour will be heading to Mexico and at least two South American cities this year, with the promise that “additional international dates will be announced soon,” according to a post on social media.

Really thrilled to tell you this!! Mexico, Argentina and Brazil: We are bringing The Eras Tour to you this year! Sweet angel princess  @SabrinaAnnLynn will be joining us on all of the shows! Visit https://t.co/sWLDCJoj1P for more information on your registrations, pre-sales and… pic.twitter.com/yraYdo1Q26 — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) June 2, 2023

Taylor Swift will perform three shows in Mexico City at Foro Sol, running August 24, 25, and 26. Her current North American plans run through five straight nights at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood California at the beginning of the same month. Dates for Argentina and Brazil were also announced Friday, taking place in November. Swift will perform at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires on November 9 and 10, then head to Rio de Janeiro for a November 18 show at Estadio Nilton Santos and then to Sao Paulo for shows on November 25 and 26 at Allianz Parque.

All eight dates will feature Sabrina Carpenter in support.

Tickets for the shows in Mexico are being put on sale beginning next week, with fans forced to register for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system if they hope to get through to purchase tickets during the initial sales period that begins on June 7. Details for the South American dates have not yet been announced. Details are available through Swift’s tour page on her website .

The ticket sales process for the massively popular tour has been enormously controversial the entire way, as Swift’s initial sales process for Eras Tour dates in the fall of 2022 was marred by terrible system meltdowns on Ticketmaster and the complete cancellation of any public general ticket sale. Since that point, Swift fans have filed lawsuits, and been subject to enormous stress as shows have approached, due to Ticketmaster releasing small batches of held-back tickets throughout the days and weeks as shows approached, creating an ecosystem of eagle-eyed fans on social media alerting others when tickets are dripped out, only to be scooped up almost immediately by fans hoping to attend.

As a result, ticket resale prices have remained sky-high for the entire tour, despite substantial inventory remaining unsold by tour operators until the moment the singer goes on stage. Tickets for Friday’s Eras Tour show at Soldier Field for example, are still unavailable for less than $850 less than eight hours to show time for members of Ticket Club, which is typically the least expensive ticket resale option for members due to it not charging service fees. Saturday’s show has a “get-in” price of just shy of $1,000 as of Friday at 1 p.m .

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour set list features a surprise song (or two), so far performed during a mini acoustic set, on each date of the the superstar’s trek, which kicked off in March 2023.

Guitar in hand and making her way to the end of the stage’s catwalk at March 17’s Eras kickoff in Glendale, Ariz., Swift revealed her intentions for the acoustic portion of her long-awaited live show. She’ll perform a surprise song that will not be played again on this tour — probably.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” she said with a small laugh, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

Here Are All the Celebrities Who Have Attended Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour is her first real tour in five years, and the first time the prolific songwriter is getting to perform selections from Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights to sold-out stadium crowds.

Eras Tour night one introduced a career-spanning, whopping 44-song setlist with a runtime of more than three hours, with Swift playing anywhere from one to eight tracks from all 10 of her full-length studio albums. The show’s nightly surprise is sure to keep her fans on their tallest tiptoes, waiting to hear what gem will be unveiled at their concert.

Below, check out the list of all the surprise songs she’s brought to The Eras Tour, courtesy of social media livestreams and post-concert clips uploaded by Swifties in attendance. Bookmark this page, as the list will updated regularly as the tour goes on.

The superstar kicked off the first of her international dates at the Foro Sol, where she is scheduled for four concerts. And the first surprise song she delivered to fans south of the U.S. border? Lover track “I Forgot That You Existed.”

“I’m excited about this one tonight,” she said before launching into the acoustic performance. “I’ve never played this live before — ever!”

Swift seemed extra smiley while singing “Labyrinth” — especially the lyric “I’m falling in love again” — leading many fans to believe she was thinking of her latest love interest, Travis Kelce.

"Is It Over Now?"/"Out of the Woods"

Performed at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Nov. 11, 2023)

Not only did Swift debut a 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault track live, but she mashed it up with a 1989 classic. The two songs seem to reference the same relationship, with “Is It Over Now?” mentioning “When you lost control/ Red blood, white snow.”

On stage in Buenos Aires, during “Is It Over Now?” Swift raised her eyebrows knowingly and unexpectedly sang, “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?/ Twenty stitches in a hospital room/ When you started crying, baby, I did too/ But when the sun came up I was looking at you” from “Out of the Woods.”

On Reputation, “End Game” features verses from Ed Sheeran and Future. In Buenos Aires, “End Game” was just Swift and her piano, giving fans a stripped-down, sweeter version of what is, at its core, a song about a romance.

"Better Than Revenge"

Performed at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Nov. 12, 2023)

The crowd started a loud chant of “Reputation!” Swift pulled out her in-ear monitor and then played … a song that is not from Reputation . Instead, she gave the acoustic treatment to “Better Than Revenge,” complete with a “now go stand in the corner and think about what you did” opening.

Swift debuted 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault track “Slut!” live. “But if I’m all dressed up/ They might as well be lookin’ at us/ And if they call me a slut/ You know it might be worth it for once,” Swift sang at the piano. The song may be new to fans, but the Buenos Aires crowd chimed in beautifully.

“I’ve never performed this one live before,” Swift said to the crowd before debuting the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault track on stage. “Let’s see how I do with it.”

“I don’t have to pretend I like acid rock/ Or that I’d like to be on a mega yacht/ With important men who think important thoughts/ Guess maybe I am better off now that we don’t talk,” she sang in the punchy outro, while wearing a blue dress.

“This has been a tradition that I started on The Eras Tour,” Swift told the crowd of playing surprise songs at every show this tour. Before playing The Hunger Games ballad “Safe & Sound” (solo, without The Civil Wars) on guitar, she teased, “Both songs I am playing tonight I have never, ever played on this tour.”

"Untouchable"

Saturday night’s audience in São Paulo next got “Untouchable” on piano. Swift re-recorded the track for Fearless (Taylor’s Version) but hasn’t performed it live since 2011 — and even then, it was rarely heard in concert.

For Swift’s final surprise song of The Eras Tour in 2023, she cleverly chose to play Evermore deluxe track “It’s Time to Go” for the first time on stage. Expect some repeats when the tour resumes in 2024: Swift explained that she plans to reset and “make all the songs fair game” again next year.

How Taylor Swift’s Brazil Eras Tour Concerts Will Update Safety Protocols Following Fan’s Death

New safety precautions have been put in place for Taylor Swift 's second The Eras Tour show in Brazil following the death of a fan at the first show in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

On Friday (Nov. 17), during the tour's first show of three at Nilton Santos Stadium, 23-year-old attendee Ana Clara Benevides died of cardiac arrest while reportedly over a thousand people sought medical treatment for passing out and heat-related illness during the outdoor show amid the heat wave and warnings from city officials.

The concert organizer's T4F announced that they will be providing more water stations during Swift's second show and are allowed to bring in sealed water containers. According to reports, the first concert ticket holders were not allowed to bring drinks into the stadium.

According to  Folha De S. Paulo , a total of eight medical posts will be present inside the stadium along with eight ambulances and eight mobile Intensive Care Units. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, released a  statement  that they created a circulation ring outside the stadium to "keep people out of the sun" in addition to extra brigade members, increase in number of ambulances on site and new water distribution points.

Fans inside the stadium for Saturday's concert reported that though there are free water areas, in other sections of the stadium, water is being sold for $8. Fans also posted that despite the stadium's ventilation ducts being covered during the first show, they are now open for the second night. According to Swifties on  Twitter , more electric fans were added to the general admission area as well.

Video footage from the general admission pit shows hundreds of people pressed together waiting for the show to begin amid the heat wave.

Prior to the second show on Saturday (Nov. 18), local firefighters brought out hoses to spray those waiting in line in an attempt to cool them off. Some fans sang Swift's song "Cruel Summer" outside in response to the heat wave.

Although in an Instagram post , Swift wrote to fans that she would not address the fan's passing on stage because she is "overwhelmed by grief," a friend of the deceased's, nurse Thiago Fernandes, told the local newspaper, "I want Ana to appear on the Taylor show screens."

Meanwhile, Swifties are confused at who is to blame for the several safety concerns that led to a death and over a thousand to need medical treatment. T4F said in a press release that it was not up to their company to allow a water bottle ban rule.

"We also emphasize that the prohibition of entering water bottles in stadiums is a requirement made by public agencies and that we do not market beverages and food, which is the responsibility of the stadium administration," T4F stated.

During the show, Swift requested water bottles for fans and threw some to them as well while the crowd chanted "water," at points in addition to holding up signs on their phones asking for water. Some fans in attendance voiced their disappointmen t in the lack of safety protocols or announcements and not being able to access water. Some fans were also confused why the set wasn't modified to not include the pyrotechnics, which still went off.

Taylor Swift’s Trainer Reveals Her Eras Workout Routine—And His Identity

By Margaux Anbouba

Image may contain Performer Person Solo Performance Adult Fashion Accessories Jewelry and Necklace

Do we really have the same amount of hours in the day as Taylor Swift ? It’s hard for me to imagine—she’s writing entire surprise albums while on the highest-grossing tour in history for a different Grammy-winning album ; I’m having trouble balancing finishing my laundry, finding time to eat lunch, and getting in my 10,000 steps.

“Her work ethic is just incredible,” Kirk Myers tells me over Zoom. He would know: The founder of New York and L.A.’s Dogpound Gym has been training the star for almost a decade now. “I’m ready to be known as ‘Taylor Swift’s trainer.’ I don't think there’s a cooler title out there.”

Myers has seen Swift through many of her Eras (he came on during the 1989 album)—but he’s also had quite a few of his own. A self-described “husky” child, he got into fitness and training through a love of sports, though a few run-ins with a heart condition quickly derailed his calling. After moving to New York City to be near family, he was able to return to training clients at a gym in Soho and quickly got two new clients: His future business partner and CEO Jenny Liu and his first celebrity client Hugh Jackman. “I had a friend that really made an amazing transformation in 30 days and I asked, ‘What the hell happened to you? Who is training you?’ All he said was ‘Kirk’” Liu recalls. “I was like, ‘Well, sign me up for Kirk because I have a wedding to get ready for.’”

From there, Myers clientele grew and his gym Dogpound was born. Word of mouth was Myers’s greatest calling card—I can practically feel his fantastic energy beaming through the Wifi. “It’s mostly one-on-one training, where I really look at your goals and what you are specifically trying to hit.” The goals can be a wedding, hitting a fitness personal record, or an upcoming role in a film. But each session has turned Myers into a fitness kingmaker—or in the case of Swift, queenmaker.

“I want you to come by and try the Taylor routine soon,” he says toward the end of our interview. “Though it’s really hard, some people would probably throw up or have to lay down on the floor if they trained like her,” he ends with a laugh. I mention that I basically haven’t exercised since before the pandemic. “Oh, then you'll definitely throw up.”

Taylor Swift’s Workout Routine

“It’s tailored,” says Myers with an emphasis on the pun. “We approached her training for the Eras tour with the mindset like a professional athlete. There was an ‘off-season’ when she wasn't touring and ‘in-season’ when she was.” Off-season training with Swift and Myers is intense, to say the least: “When she’s not touring, we’re in the gym up to six days a week for sometimes two hours a day.” The focuses are strength, conditioning, and targeting her core, which is key to help her while singing, dancing, and the like.

But even during the in season, things were on: “Taylor trained during the entire tour. We would average two times a week. In-season training was more about maintenance, and so it was more like stability, mobility, biomechanics.” Myers worked with Amin Javid, DC, an L.A.-based chiropractic physician, to implement recovery techniques. “If you’ve seen the show, you know how intense it is physically. Imagine doing that three, four days in a row and then you finally have a few off days and you’re still showing up to gym. That’s Taylor.”

How to Get Fit Like Taylor Swift

If you’re in New York or Los Angeles, you can get a Dogpound membership to help you reach your goals and literally train like Taylor. Her time spent in the gym was all “strength and conditioning”—while Swift did cardio on her own. “One thing that’s important to focus on when you’re working on your core strength is actually breathing,” Myers advises. “I know it’s outside the box, but fully breathing through workouts helps strengthen your core.”

“Taylor is the most resilient person I have ever met,” Myers adds. “It’s super-inspiring to see her consistently overcome obstacles and become better and stronger in the end. This also translates into her training and throughout her workouts. I give her a difficult exercise or challenging workout, not only is she able to complete and push through it—but she also perseveres, moving forward into the next exercise. This ultimately makes her stronger, better, and faster.”

On How He and Taylor Met

“It’s not really that exciting of a story,” Myers says humbly. “We met through friends, though I can’t say what friend.” And yes, he was already a fan. Some of his favorite songs include “Shake It Off,” “22” and “If I Were a Man.” “I’ve never intentionally played her music while we are training, but I love it, so yes at times it’s come on the playlist.”

Kirk Myers’s Other Celebrity Clients

Hugh Jackman may have been Myers’s first celebrity client, but he certainly wasn’t his last. Dogpound regular Fabien Baron actually designed the gym’s logo; models Adriana Lima, Jasmine Tookes, Kaia Gerber, and Karlie Kloss all have trained with him; as well as Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Eva Longoria.

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour

Lloyds Bank is aiming to help Taylor Swift fans in the UK avoid a cruel summer. The bank has issued an “urgent warning” over ticket scams for the upcoming UK leg of the superstar’s Eras Tour, finding that Swifties are being “targeted by a wave of concert ticket scams flooding social media.”

The institution further estimates that industry-wide across the UK there are likely to have been at least 3,000 victims since tickets went on sale, with over £1 million ($1.25 million) lost to fraudsters so far.

More than 90% of reported cases start with fake ads or posts on Facebook, which includes Facebook Marketplace, according to Lloyds, with dozens of unofficial groups set up specifically for people looking to buy and sell tickets for Taylor Swift concerts.

Lloyds warned, “With all UK dates now sold out, many more fans are likely to fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months, both leading up to the tour and once the concerts begin in June.”

In its research, Lloyds found that the number of reported scam cases relating to concert tickets more than doubled last summer compared to the same period a year earlier (up by 158%). Among the other major artists most commonly targeted last summer were Coldplay, Harry Styles and Beyonce.

Liz Ziegler, Fraud Prevention Director, Lloyds Bank, said, “For her legion of dedicated Swifties, the excitement is building ahead of Taylor’s Eras Tour finally touching down in the UK this summer. However, cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting her most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts. It’s easy to let our emotions get the better of us when we find out our favorite artist is going to be performing live, but it’s important not to let those feelings cloud our judgement when trying to get hold of tickets.”

Ziegler suggested, “Buying directly from reputable, authorized platforms is the only way to guarantee you’re paying for a genuine ticket. Even then, always pay by debit or credit card for the greatest protection. If you’re being asked to pay by bank transfer, particularly from a seller you’ve found on social media, that should immediately set alarm bells ringing.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.

It wasn’t the stuff of her wildest dreams.

On Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , which dropped Friday , the pop star, 34, seemingly admits that she was more emotionally wounded from her break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn than it seemed at the time.

In her song I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, the 13th track on the album, Swift says that she was only pretending to be happy following their split, which hit headlines just days after she started her Eras Tour last year.

Lyrics supposedly about the Conversations With Friends star include: “Cause I’m a real tough kid, I can handle my s**t / They said, ‘Baby, gotta fake it till you make it,’ and I did / Lights, camera, bitch, smile, even when you wanna die / He said he’d love me all his life.”

Swift, who has since moved on to NFL player Travis Kelce, 34, also says in the song that she was “shattered” while crowds chanted “more” from her.

Swift dated Alwyn, 33, for six years, from 2016 to 2023.

Their relationship was more low-key and private than her relationship with past famous exes, such as Tom Hiddleston, 43.

Neither Alwyn nor Swift has publicly spoken much about the other, but this song appears to offer a peek behind the curtains.

And the view it gives is a sharp contrast to a statement that Swift made in May last year. During an Eras tour stop in Massachusetts, she told the crowd, “I’ve just never been this happy in my life — in all aspects of my life — ever before. And I just want to thank you for being a part of that. I don’t know. It’s not just the tour. My life finally feels like it makes sense.”

This isn’t the only track where Swift talks about Alwyn.

Another song called So Long, London is a goodbye to the city where the pop star once lived with the actor.

To demonstrate how deep those Swift Easter eggs can be hidden, that track is 9 minutes and 28 seconds — which happens to mirror when the exes are rumoured to have started dating in 2016: September 28.

Alwyn is also rumoured to figure into the album title, which may be a snarky spin on the name of a group chat, the Tortured Man Club, that he had with actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott.

Alwyn and Mescal, 28, opened up about their group chat during a 2022 interview with Variety . It was founded by Scott, 47.

“[Scott is] just on it every day. He’s just on it by himself,” Mescal told the outlet, with Alwyn joking that the Fleabag actor is “just messaging himself good mornings.”

In an interview with GQ UK, Alwyn added that the chat name was “a reflection on Connell and Nick.” Alwyn played the character Nick on Conversations With Friends, while Mescal played Connell on Normal People . Both TV series were adaptations from books written by Irish author Sally Rooney.

Further lyrics by Swift say, “I was grinning like I’m winning, I was hitting my marks, cause I can do it with a broken heart / I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday every day. I’m so obsessed with him but he avoids me like the plague / I cry a lot but I am so productive, it’s an art.”

Country singer Luke Bryan took a mighty fall at his recent show, appearing to slip on a fan’s belonging that wound up onstage.

This is savage. One of the biggest rappers of the 21st century just performed to a near-empty arena meant to house 10,000 screaming fans.

An R&B hitmaker and three-time Grammy Award winner has announced he will bring his global tour to Australia later this year.
