ohrid travel

Archaeological finds indicate that Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in all of Europe. The lake itself is over three million years old. Ohrid town is first mentioned in Greek documents from 353 BCE, when it was known as Lychnidos - or, “the city of light.” Only much later, in 879 CE, was it renamed Ohrid. The name probably derives from the phrase “vo hridi” – meaning roughly, “in the cliff.” It comes from the time when the town was limited in a small area on the lake side of the hill, which in fact is a huge cliff rising above the lakeshore. The town as we know it today was built mostly between the 7th and 19th centuries. During the Byzantine period, Ohrid became a significant cultural and economic centre, serving as an episcopal centre of the Orthodox Church and as the site of the first Slavic university run by Saints Clement and Naum at the end of the 9th century. At the beginning of the 11th century, Ohrid briefly became the capital of the kingdom ruled by Tsar Samuel, whose fortress still presides over the city today.

Aside from the lake, Ohrid is most famous for its ancient churches, basilicas, and monasteries where Saints Kliment and Naum with the help of Bulgarian king Boris I (students of Cyril and Methodus) wrote their teachings and formulated the Cyrillic alphabet used in North Macedonia, as well as neighboring countries Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro and as far as Russia, and many of the countries of the former Soviet Union. Most of these churches charge an entry which for tourists is normally double that what locals pay, but is still worth it. It is a good idea to cover up when entering a church, but most locals will understand the inconveniences involved during a hot Macedonian Summer. There is also a wonderful ancient walled fortress at the top of the city.

Fortifications [ edit ]

The old town is circled with walls, which are crowned with Tsar Samuel fortress. The first fortifications were built in the 5th century BC, but the oldest remains preserved are from 3rd century BC. The fortifications were reinforced various times throughout history and what stands today is largely from the 10th century. There used to be four gates to the city: the Lower Gate - you'll reach it soon after you walk from the main square inside the old part of the town on “Car Samoil” street. It used to be the gate through which regular visitors entered the city in the ancient and medieval times, just one tower of it still stands; the Upper Gate - in ancient times it used to be connected with the ancient theatre by portico. It is well preserved due to the reinforcements made in the 16th century; the Front Gate - near St Mary's Celnica Church. It is the main entrance gate but just stands in traces today; and the Water Gate - the entrance in the city from the lake, the place where it used to stand is not known.

Beaches [ edit ]

Apart from sightseeing, there are a few different natural beaches. Usually, the further from the city centre the more scenic they become, and each offers a unique beach experience. Gradiste beach is known for many young people and music for instance, while others have families or tranquil atmosphere. Beaches are most crowded in July and August, and quiet the rest of the year, which is a whole different experience.

  • Labino beach . It's a small, stony beach that is not crowded. The water is clear and refreshing. Best time to go is in the morning.
  • Ljubaništa beach ( On the southwest side of the lake. ). Probably the best beach on Ohrid Lake. The beach is long and sandy with usually clean water. There are a lot of people, but you can't feel that since the beach is really large. Best time to go is after 18:00. A sunset you won't forget. ( updated Sep 2023 )
  • Gorica Hotel beach . This is maybe the most beautiful beach on the coast, it's covered with small pebbles and cut between deep rocks. Unfortunately it can get very crowded, so come here in early morning or late afternoon. If you visit Ohrid off-season this is the place to come and enjoy a great swim. There is a small cafe on the beach where one might also get some snacks and ice cream or rent beach beds. Walking along the coast from the city centre to this beach is scenic, even more past it, and takes about 1½ hr. The presidential Villa Ohrid, where the Balkan's Peace Framework was signed, is in the woods nearby. ( updated Sep 2023 )

Scuba diving [ edit ]

It is possible to scuba dive in lake Ohrid. You have to get to Gradiste, some 15 km south of Ohrid town. At the site is also Bay of Bones, an open air museum of how life used to be here. There is only one scuba diving shop (SSI affiliated), Amfora Diving [dead link] , with the usual choice of courses and diving trips. One dive including rental of all equipment costs €45.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Traditional Macedonian musical instruments, filigree jewelery, woodcarvings, items made from copper, or a CD with authentic Macedonian music , can be brought home to refresh your memories of your visit.

If interested in real Macedonian folk music, ask for music performed by Aleksandar Sarievski, Nikola Badev, Vaska Ilieva, Petranka Kostadinova, Anka Gieva, Jonče Hristovski, Kočo Petrovski... Avoid CDs with modern-day "turbo folk" music (i.e. semi-naked girls with bad voices, singing on techno melodies).

  • The Talevi and Filevi are the two Ohrid families who make genuine Ohrid pearl necklaces, earrings and broaches; they carried over this handcraft down from one generation to another. Ohrid pearl is created from seashells and coated with 5-7 thin layers of emulsion made from the scales of the Ohrid fish called Plashitsa, and is protected with a Designation of Origin.

Books [ edit ]

  • Books from Ohrid to read on the beach or take home.

Some of the modern buys in this birthplace of Cyrillic literacy, include books from Happy Something Press, Ohrid's book publisher in English, founded by Macedonian born author and Oxford University student Evangelina Cifliganec [2] known for her contemporary novel "Happy Something" . Its 2nd edition was published by the publisher's Ohrid branch, HappySomething.com, as the author was said to be inspired by Ohrid. You might find it easier online as the price of the English version there is higher and not always in stock.

A Passage through the Fog is a book that has been written in Ohrid by the Ohrid born writer and photographer Misho Yuzmeski. Dr. Michael Seraphinoff, in his Translator`s note on the book has written: "Misho Yuzmeski's novel invites the reader to join his young narrator on a journey of discovery through the heart of modern Europe. While this journey offers certain narrow insights into modern day city life in England and a few of the continent's major cities, it is the internal journey of the young traveler that is at the heart of this novel. Readers are liable to find parallels to some youthful search for meaning of their own in Michele's journey. He reminds us of a critical time in many of our lives, when childhood is finally behind us, but the road ahead is quite uncertain." A copy of the book can be found in all Ohrid's bookstores and there is no difference in price between different stores. Bulgarian translation of the same book is available, as well.

Short History of the Macedonian People by Risto Stefov was published in Ohrid in 2011. This book is a chronological outline of historical events involving Macedonia and the Macedonian people from ancient times to the present.

Numerous book stalls can be found (at least in good weather during the tourist season) in the square near Ohrid harbour. They sell a variety of maps useful for tourists as well.

Groceries [ edit ]

The downtown farmers' market has all kinds of fresh produce, as well as local specialties such as walnuts. There are cheese and sausage shops in the market as well, as well as numerous vendors of clothing and assorted industrial goods.

Bicycle supplies and service [ edit ]

There is at least one bike repair shop, which also sells common spare parts and supplies, next to the farmer's market. Some vendors in the market carry bicycle accessories (spare tubes, pumps, etc.) as well. This is pretty much the only place in the region to purchase stuff like this, since smaller towns around Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa do not seem to have any bicycle related shops or services - and even gas stations there may not have air pumps.

Eat [ edit ]

Restaurants and hotels throughout North Macedonia are proudly displaying Ohrid trout (Ohridska pastrmka) on their menus because it is very delicious but it is illegal to catch the fish along the Macedonian shoreline of Lake Ohrid. Please do not support or encourage the consumption of the trout. Ohrid trout, an ancient living fish, is in severe danger. There is also another trout species called Belvica. Stay safe [ edit ]

  • Ohrid Pearl is a type of imitation pearl (an artificial, man-made pearl) and as such has no real value as a gemstone. Most of the "pearls" sold around Lake Ohrid, on the street and in most shops, are simply unfinished imitation pearls (beads made of nacre, but without the pearly coating). Although selling shops have clear notes stating these are hand made ones.

  • Bitola (E 80 km) – One of the most European-flavoured cities in the country, Bitola is known for its colourful neo-classical architecture and the Ancient Macedon ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis nearby.
  • Kičevo (N 60 km)
  • Kruševo (NE 90 km via Bitola) – A museum-city nestled high up in the mountains of southwestern North Macedonia; it is one the most historically significant destinations in the country as it was the site of a revolt against the Ottoman Empire; there is skiing in the winter, and paragliding, walking and mountain biking in the summer.
  • Prilep (NE 110 km) – Tobacco fields, medieval monasteries, and strange rocks.
  • Resen (E 25 km) – The home to Saraj Castle built in 1908.
  • Struga (E 16 km) – A small town on Lake Ohrid which used to be rather quiet, yet nowadays (2016) it receives an enormous number of Dutch tourists.
  • Debarca – A rural region just north of Ohrid.

ohrid travel

Life is always better at the lake. Now imagine a scenic mountain backdrop and an assortment of adventurous activities to fill your day. From thrilling mountain biking to sunset cruises, Lake Ohrid is the perfect destination for any traveler.

This Lake Ohrid, Macedonia ultimate travel guide will share day-trip ideas, offer budget-savvy tips and provide contact information for locals to help you plan your next holiday to this fantastic region.

ohrid travel

Macedonia has been keeping a secret from the rest of the world. It’s a little hidden paradise called Lake Ohrid. During weekends in the summer, Skopje becomes unusually quiet because many Macedonians make the 200 km drive to escape to this lake.

It’s also a major holiday destination for many Dutch, Polish, Serbian, Bulgarian, and German tourists. Although we’ve spent quite a bit of time exploring the Balkans , we’ve heard little about this region. Visiting Lake Ohrid simply blew us away! Especially, with its natural beauty and affordable prices.

ohrid travel

Lake Ohrid is unique in that it holds a UNESCO World Heritage Site award for both nature and culture. With so much to see and do in the area, visitors can be as active or as laid-back as they prefer. Most travelers flock here during summer, but Lake Ohrid is a year-round destination.

Where to Stay in Ohrid

These are the best places to stay in Ohrid, Macedonia sorted by price.

Budget: Villa Dvor Ohrid (great value) or Villa Mishe (modern and clean) Mid-Range: Villa Dislievski Apartment: Apartment Villa Dudanov or Port Villa Luxury: Unique Resort and Spa (large rooms and a pool!)

Best Day Trips in Lake Ohrid

The best day trip in Ohrid includes taking the ferry from Ohrid to St. Naum. From St. Naum, visitors may tour the monastery, swim on the beach, visit the St. Naum Spring, dine at one of several restaurants, or rent a paddleboat.

Beach, Boat, and St. Naum Monastery

One of the best days we had in Lake Ohrid was spent boating, sunbathing, and visiting St. Naum Monastery. If you are not traveling by car, the best way to get to the other side of the lake is by the Lake Ohrid Holiday Ferry.

ohrid travel

For two people, the cost was about USD 25. The ferry provides round-trip transport to the other side of the lake and a beautiful scenic boat ride. The ferry departs from Ohrid’s main city center around 10 a.m. and departs St. Naum around 3 p.m.

Floating over the springs provides passengers with a spiritual and mystical feeling.

ohrid travel

Once we arrived, we toured the picturesque Monastery taking note of the famous peacocks, beautiful architecture, and scenic views. There are a hotel and a restaurant on the premises. During our visit, the restaurant was playing some lovely guitar music, making it a relaxing place to enjoy a coffee or a cool drink.

Video

Thanks to Aleksandar from the EDEN Tourism Cluster of Southwest Macedonia , we were wisely advised to explore the freshwater springs located next to the Monastery. A 30-minute rowboat ride through some of the most pristine water on the planet is available for about USD 3 per person.

St. Naum Spring

Floating over the springs provides passengers with a spiritual and mystical feeling. The guides narrate throughout the boat ride and point out specific locations where the water is released from the earth below. This was one of our top experiences in all of Europe!

ohrid travel

After our boat ride, we headed to the only sandy beach on Lake Ohrid. It’s located adjacent to St. Naum. The lake was warm despite being so close to the chilly spring water.  There are changing stations, fountains for drinking water, souvenir stands, and a few restaurants.

We ate at Cuba Libre Restaurant Drim, which is directly next to the springs. The ferry departs for Ohrid at 3 p.m. If you’d like to stay longer,  consider the option to take a minibus back for a small cost. Minibusses provide pickup and drop-off in the Saint Naum parking lot.

Outdoor Adventures

ohrid travel

Ohrid’s diverse topography provides a great backdrop for a variety of outdoor adventures. For this reason, we decided to enjoy an ATV adventure through Galicica National Park .

Hiking Around Lake Ohrid

Hikers will love the 350+ kilometers of mountain trails to explore around the lake. We spent one day hiking in the Marin Dol Valley, along the Old Velestovo Trail. The trail is elevated providing glorious views of the lake below.

ohrid travel

Many of these settlements are now abandoned and it gave us the feeling as though we were walking through an opened time capsule.

ohrid travel

On the walk, we passed through several small villages such as Velestovo, Shipokno, and Gorno Konjsko. Many of these settlements are now abandoned and it gave us the feeling as though we were walking through an opened time capsule.

Villa Minami

Halfway through our walk, almost like a mirage, we came upon Villa Minami located in the village of Gorno Konjsko. During the tourist season, this quaint B&B offers visitors a lovely opportunity for a traditional lunch with gorgeous lake views. (Non-hikers can reach Villa Minami by taxi for about USD 10 from the city center.)

ohrid travel

After lunch, we continued through the wooded forest in Galichitsa National Park. During our slow, easy walk, we learned more about the area and shared stories along the way. After a while, we reached Risto’s Guest House where we enjoyed the perfect refresher, homemade cherry juices picked fresh from her garden.

ohrid travel

While enjoying our juices we were informed that many hikers plan multi-day hiking tours through this region and use Risto’s as a pit stop. Often people will start in Struga and make their way to St. Naum, overnighting in guesthouses along the way.

Risto’s Guest House is a popular stop on this hiker circuit. They receive stellar reviews, with some of the best homemade cooking on Lake Ohrid. The Eden Tourism Cluster of Southwest Macedonia can provide additional information and help in arranging these multi-day hiking tours.

Best Hiking Guide in Lake Ohrid

ohrid travel

We spent the day hiking with our new friend Ivan Cekic, a licensed mountain guide. Ivan specializes in organized mountain biking and cycling excursions through Travel Velodrome, but he’s also an avid hiker with lots of knowledge to share. You can contact Ivan at [email protected] to set up personalized tours throughout the Ohrid area.

Biking Around Lake Ohrid

ohrid travel

The following day we connected with J.J. Adventures to enjoy a cycling day trip on Ohrid’s backroads and mountainsides. There are a variety of different trails and difficulty levels for a wide range of experiences.

J.J. recommended the medium level course that winds it’s way along some beautiful countryside and up a mountain to Saint Bogorodica church.

Ivan and J.J. also organize multi-day biking tours for cycling enthusiasts. That morning we met at a local hotel where we received our bikes, helmets, and packed lunches.

Exploring Ohrid’s Old Town and City Center

Although enjoying lake life was our main goal, many historical attractions are worthy of a visit too.

Samuel’s Fortress

ohrid travel

The Samuel Fortress was constructed by Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria who moved the Bulgarian Empire’s capital city from Skopje to Ohrid in 990 A.D. Today, the fort is a very controversial character, especially between Bulgarians and Macedonians.

Climb up to the fortress towers to get a great view of the lake and surrounding city. There’s a small admission fee, but the views make it well worth it.

Amphitheater

This amphitheater was discovered by accident in the 1980s and was used for gladiator battles and murdering Christians during its heyday. It was believed to be constructed around 200 B.C. and is now mainly used for summertime concerts and performances.

1,000-Year-Old Tree

ohrid travel

The Old Plane Tree is one of Ohrid’s most famous landmarks. It is estimated to be over 1,000 years old.

National Workshop for Homemade Paper

This tiny working museum demonstrates the old-world tradition of making handmade paper. There are many beautiful handmade paper products for sale including journals, postcards, and frame-worthy sketches all for as little as 2 euros. Admission is free.

Church of St. John at Kaneo

Gracing the cover of National Geographic twice, this church is truly the iconic beauty of Lake Ohrid. The earliest surviving documents can confirm that the church has been perched on the cliff overlooking the lake since at least 1447. In 1964, restoration efforts found wonderful frescos painted on the dome.

Video

Ohrid was built on the Ancient Greek city of Lychnidos. The Amphitheater and the remains of this early Christian basilica, believed to be from the 5th century, were the only two structures left of the initial settlement. However, recent excavations revealed lovely mosaics constructed with the up-most attention to detail.

Bay of Bones

ohrid travel

Consider visiting one of Macedonia’s most popular museums. The Bay of Bones is a speculative recreation of a prehistoric settlement, from 6000-8000 B.C. It features staged over-water huts replicating the living conditions of the people who once lived here.

ohrid travel

There is a very small museum on-site, but it doesn’t provide much information. Touring the museum takes about 30 minutes.

There is a small cafe so grab an ice cream or coffee to enjoy the waterfront and to extend your time at the museum. Next, to the archaeological site, there is a company that arranges scuba diving tours.

We took a minibus from a local bus stop to get to the Bay of Bones Museum. After our visit, we had a very difficult time getting back to the city center.

We waited for almost two hours at the side of the road waiting for another minibus to come from St. Naum. The easiest, most reliable way to visit the museum is by arranging transportation ahead of time.

Best Restaurants in Lake Ohrid

On our tour, we were lucky to discover three great restaurants that offer a more memorable dining experience in Ohrid.

Fish House Kaneo

ohrid travel

Known locally as belvica, this freshwater fish is a specialty dish around Lake Ohrid. At Fish House Kaneo, we dined lakeside enjoying this local delicacy served with grilled vegetables, roasted green peppers with garlic, and potatoes. When accompanied by a glass of white wine and rakija, this dining experience is as local as it gets.

Before dinner, we enjoyed a sunset boat cruise on the lake. Locals line their boats along the lakeshore making it easy to hail one for a short sunset cruise. Ask a local to find out the going rate.

ohrid travel

The trendy SU Hotel features a fresh, modern menu, lake views, and a great outdoor seating area. Order the Real McCoy, 180 grams of pure baby beef. This is our top pick for the best burger in the Balkans!

ohrid travel

As previously mentioned, we reached this charming, family-run restaurant by hiking, but folks can drive to the restaurant or hire a taxi for about USD 10 from the city center. The restaurant boasts aerial views of the lake and fabulous local Macedonian food at reasonable prices. It is here where we tried Gomleze, a layered Macedonian pie that when prepared in the traditional method, takes several hours to properly make.

Best Cheap Eats in Ohrid

As busy budget travelers, we love cheap local eats that are hearty and satisfying. We found three places worthy of a stop.

ohrid travel

One morning, our host from Apartments Joce invited us to his favorite local restaurant, Restaurant Boem. This place served up some of the best chorba in Macedonia. Along with fresh bread and a regional garlic dressing, this was one of my favorite meals in Macedonia.

It took us some time to realize this, but chorba is a morning dish only. It is often referred to as a cure for morning hangovers. If you want to sample chorba, come before noon! It goes quickly!

ohrid travel

Along the lakeside promenade, a small stand grills up meats for hearty hamburgers and ćevapi pitas. The bonus is the ability to garnish your order. There’s a salad bar where you can personally load up on tomatoes, onions, and delicious grilled peppers! It’s a good place to stop if you’re looking for a quick cheap meal. Great value!

Spicy Sausage Pita

ohrid travel

Located in the square with the Old Plane Tree, this restaurant sells spicy, grilled meat sandwiches at a great price. They offer to take away so it’s a great option when you want to grab a quick bite to eat.

We’d like to give a special shout-out to our friends at EDEN Tourism Cluster of Southwest Macedonia  for helping us plan our week around Lake Ohrid. Their hospitality, warmth, and pride in their country are as beautiful as the landscape itself. We arrived as tourists and left as friends.

Nice to see some attention given to the active tourism opportunities that the Ohrid-Prespa region has to offer. Not many people realize that Lake Ohrid, Prespa and Mount Galichica create one of the most biodiverse locations in all of Europe with several plants and animals that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. Together with the stunning scenery, that makes for superb hiking and biking. We’re glad you enjoyed that experience.

Visit Lake Ohrid in Macedonia With This Complete Guide

This post contains affiliate links.

Macedonia isn’t a super popular travel destination in Europe but there are some hidden gems in the country and Lake Ohrid is definitely one of them.

Lake Ohrid is one of the best places to visit in Macedonia because it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few in the world that is both a natural world heritage site (the lake itself) and a cultural world heritage site (the Old Town).

The beautiful lake is also on the border with Albania, so it’s also easy to combine with a trip to Theth in Albania’s Accursed Mountains.

This little gem on the water is a perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a few drinks while swimming under the sun. If you want to visit Lake Ohrid on your next trip to the Balkans, don’t hesitate to add it to the itinerary.

Ready to go? Make the most of your visit with this complete guide to Lake Ohrid!

How to Get to Lake Ohrid

Determining how to get to Lake Ohrid all depends on which city you’re coming from.

If you want to learn how to get from Sofia to Lake Ohrid,  click the link to see my detailed guide.

To get to Lake Ohrid from Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, it’s much easier. Simply check this timetable and then go to the Skopje bus station for the one that suits you best. The bus ride is a bit over 3 hours long and costs 520 denars / about 10 usd.

To get to Lake Ohrid from Tirana, you can buy a bus ticket on the route that eventually goes all the way from Tirana to Skopje (which is where we were heading).

You can buy the tickets from Drita Tours, an agency located behind the large International Hotel in the center square.

The bus leaves every day at 4pm and 7pm. Just be warned that this route takes forever .

lake and mountains

We went from Tirana to Durres (on the coast) and then s l o w  l y made our way to Struga. The border crossing required a personal search of each bag and we all had to get off the bus which took another 45 minutes.

Finally, we arrived in Struga, which is where you’ll get off to go to Ohrid. From here, it’ll be another 20 minute taxi ride (and should cost about 10 to 12 usd) to get to the lake.

Having inadvertently went to Lake Ohrid from both Skopje and Tirana (don’t ask), I can strongly suggest that the trip is much faster and better on the Macedonia side.

If you can schedule your itinerary to go from Skopje to Lake Ohrid to Tirana instead of the other way around it will definitely be better.

What to Do When You Visit Lake Ohrid

Ok, you made it to your destination!

Now, what should you do when you visit Lake Ohrid? I have all the answers for ya right here.

Chill on the Water

The best thing to do when you visit Lake Ohrid is to simply relax.

My favroite place to do that during our 3 night stay was at Cuba Libre Beach Bar . It’s about a 15 minute walk from the center and here they have lounge chairs on a dock on the water and a restaurant serving food and drinks.

You can show up the morning to get a lounge chair or reserve yours the day before. From here you can jump off the dock to cool off when you get too hot and they have everything you need, including wifi and clean bathrooms, for a great day.

The cost is 200 denar / 4 usd for a bed and umbrella for the day and it’s totally worth it.

Also, the food was surprisingly good (I mean, it was totally average but that was better than I expected) and the prices were great.

Mixed drinks and food started at 250 denar / 5 usd and beers were only 110 denar / 2 usd. In total for coffee, lunch, sun beds and plenty of beers for two we spent 2700 denar / 50 usd at Cuba Libre. I thought it was a pretty good deal for a full day!

Go on an Adventure

If laying in the sun all day isn’t for you there are also more adventurous activities available in Lake Ohrid.

If you’re looking for more, paragliding trips are easy to organize directly at Cuba Libre, or you can rent scooters, bikes, or kayaks from agencies in the center, get a paddle boat for only 200 denar / 4 usd per hour to explore the lake, or take boat tours on the water.

freshwater springs at Lake Ohrid

Take a Boat Trip to the St. Naum Monastery

On our third day, we decided it was time to switch it up a bit and visit the St. Naum Monastery .

This required a 1.5 hour boat ride and you can buy tickets directly on the dock in the main square. They cost 600 denar / 11 usd per person and the boats leave at 10 am every day.

The ride is nice and we arrived to the monastery around 11:30.

It has an old painted chapel and a lot of peacocks running around the grounds. After that, we ate lunch at Ostrovo with a table right on the water and then took a short boat ride into the fresh water springs. The cost was 200 denar / 4 usd per person and was definitely worth it.

It felt like I was exploring a long lost jungle and the color of the water was gorgeous.

Finally, we finished our day trip laying on the beach under a tree and reading until it was time to go. The boat left at 3 and with an extra stop at the Bay of Bones museum on the way back we returned to Lake Ohrid around 5 pm.

Explore the Old Town

The Old Town was built around 800 AD and is quite beautiful to walk around in.

There’s not a ton to actually do in it but it’s great for photography and has lots of cute little restaurants to sit down in for a bite to eat.

In the Old Town one of the main attractions is the National Museum and you can visit a workshop for handmade paper as well.

Catch the Sunset at the Church of St. John

How beautiful is this place? It was right by our Airbnb and is an easy walk from the Old Town.

We went for sunset and the view of the water and the chapel and the sun sinking behind the mountains was great. Afterward, walk a few steps down the coast for dinner at Kaneo (I’ll get to that soon!) and you’ll have a perfect night.

Where to Stay When You Visit Lake Ohrid

When you visit Lake Ohrid you can either stay in the center area or the Old Town area. They’re about a 15-minute walk apart and it just depends on what you’re looking for.

We stayed in the Old Town at an Airbnb and had amazing views from the balcony.

If you want to be closer to the lake and the bars and restaurants then staying downtown will be better for you. Whichever you choose you really can’t go wrong and they’re so close together that the decision won’t have a huge impact on your stay either way.

Turkish food at a restaurant in Lake Ohrid

Where to Eat When You Visit Lake Ohrid

Now for my favorite category: food! If you visit Lake Ohrid you’re in for a treat because the food is great.

I was surprised because usually small touristy towns are overpriced and the food is disappointing but not Lake Ohrid… if you know where to go that is.

We stayed for three days and stopped here every single day for breakfast. Fruit Box is just that good.

They have tons of different smoothies on the menu, both fruit and protein, and have these small little chocolatey breakfast balls that are only 30 denar each as well. The smoothies were super cheap and were a perfect refreshing start to our hot days under the sun.

Dr. Falafel

This place is amazing.

It’s a tiny little Turkish restaurant tucked in at the far end of the pedestrian street. Their menu is small, which is always a good sign, and we each got the falafel plate. It included bread, hummus, six falafel balls and an array of veggies for only 170 denar / 3 usd. So filling, so flavorful, so cheap.

That’s my kind of meal.

Kaneo Retsaurant

Kaneo was my favorite restaurant and if you visit Lake Ohrid definitely don’t miss it. It’s located right by the Church of St. John, so it’s perfect to combine some sunset pictures at the church with dinner at Kaneo.

Here I strongly recommend the truffle gnocchi (I love truffle) and a dish called “trout in prison.”

Both were made with homemade pasta and were just so delicious. Plus, for the quality and view the price was great. Meals cost between 300 and 500 denar / around 5 to 10 usd and the mojitos were spectacular as well.

A Perfect Two Days on the Shores of Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

ohrid travel

It was probably a photo much like this one that first drew me to Lake Ohrid.

Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo, Lake Ohrid

Ever since then Macedonia’s largest lake has been a firm feature on my travel wish list.  It was just a case of waiting for the right opportunity to arise to facilitate a visit there.

And, while researching a recent trip to Albania , I realised that it was actually cheaper to fly home from Ohrid, Macedonia than it was from Albania’s capital city, Tirana.  So, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to tag a couple of days in Ohrid on to the end of our Albanian adventure .

Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. All this means is that if you make a purchase through one of the links I have provided, I will earn a small commission as a result but the cost to you will remain exactly the same.

Where is Lake Ohrid and how do I get there?

Ohrid is located 130 kilometres (a two-hour 15 minute drive) east of Tirana or 173 kilometres (a two-hour 32 minute drive) south west of North Macedonia’s capital, Skopje.  There are daily bus services from both Tirana and Skopje.  If you’re travelling from Tirana (as we did), the bus service is operated by Euro Bus and leaves the International Bus Terminal daily at 14:00 hours (correct June 2019).  Ohrid’s bus terminal is a few kilometres out of town, but for an extra €2 the driver dropped us right in the centre.

Alternatively, you may be arriving into Ohrid’s International Airport, which is a 10-kilometre journey by taxi (there are no buses) that takes approximately 20 minutes.

A few fun facts about Ohrid

  • Ohrid is one of the oldest continuously occupied towns in Europe, with a history dating back to Neolithic times.
  • Lake Ohrid is the oldest continuously existing lake in Europe.  I’m not quite sure how a lake can be anything but continuously existing (they don’t just disappear and then mysteriously return!) but there you have it!
  • Both the lake and town of the same name form part of the country’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site .
  • Like Lake Titicaca in Peru/Bolivia, Lake Ohrid was formed in a geotectonic depression (an area of land that’s sunken beneath the surrounding area due to tectonic activity)
  • Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake it the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288m.
  • Lake Ohrid hosts more than 200 endemic species – the most well-known being the Ohrid trout ( Salmo letnica ).

Where to stay in Ohrid

I’m sure there are many other wonderful places to stay in Ohrid , but the apartment we booked for two nights honestly was perfect in every way. For starters, the view from our spacious private terrace looked like this:

View from our terrace at Maslov Apartments, Lake Ohrid

To be completely honest, this spectacular view of Lake Ohrid was the main reason I booked Maslov Apartments in the first place.

But I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything else was amazing too – the large floor to ceiling windows that let lots of light into the room, the comfy beds, the spotless bathroom and super hot and powerful shower, the coffee/tea making facilities and snacks and the lovely host (I think her name is Andréa) who lives downstairs and is always on hand whenever you need her.

Maslov Apartments, Lake Ohrid

We also couldn’t have asked for a better location, literally steps from the infamous Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo .  Yes, it’s a little uphill from the main part of Ohrid’s Old Town but that’s what affords it such wonderful views.  And we were still only 750 metres from the main city square and port, and minutes from shops, cafés and restaurants.

Have a guess how much we paid for two nights here? £62, that’s how much little.  And people wonder why I don’t holiday in the UK more often.  I rest my case!

Things to see and do in Ohrid in two days

Ohrid’s Old Town is pretty compact, so all the sights and attractions are within easy walking distance of each other (you may have to conquer a few hills in the process though!).  After spending an action packed seven days travelling around Albania , we were keen to slow the pace a little here for the last couple of days of our trip, but we still found plenty to keep us occupied both at ground level and above it!

Whether you’ve got just one day to explore Lake Ohrid or a whole weekend, here are a few suggestions for things to see and do in town.

1 | Visit the most photographed church in North Macedonia

I’ve already mentioned this church once in this post, so I thought I’d start by properly introducing it.  If you’ve seen photos of Lake Ohrid, this is probably the church that features in the vast majority of them.

Built at the end of the 13th century by an unknown benefactor and boasting an enviable location perched on the cliffs directly above the lake, the Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo (also known as St. John the Theologian) is a Macedonian Orthodox church that’s located around a kilometre west of the Port of Ohrid.

As we were staying less than 200 metres away, we made several trips down to the church, in order to photograph it at different times of the day.

It’s lovely first thing in the morning when it’s beautifully devoid of tourists and when the sun illuminates its eastern facade, but it’s equally beautiful during golden hour and at dusk.

Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo at dusk and sunset

According to legend there were once 365 churches within Ohrid’s city boundaries – one for every day of the year.

I don’t think we’ll ever know if this was true or not, but there are definitely a lot of churches still to be found inside the old city walls.  Sv Sofia, Sv Kilmet at Plaošnik, Sv Bogorodica Perivleptos and Sv Bogorodica Bolnicka and Sv Nikola Bolnicki are some of the others you may want to seek out.

Church of Sv Sofija, Ohrid

2 | Take a hike up to Tsar Samoil’s Fortress (a.k.a Samuel’s Fortress)

I must admit that we weren’t blessed with the best weather for the majority of our time in Ohrid. It was sunny when we first arrived but the longer we spent there the more the cloud began to build, to the point that I think we only narrowly escaped a thunderstorm on the afternoon of day two.

Obviously I picked the afternoon of day two to climb up to the town’s castle.

Because, with such a short amount of time here, I couldn’t afford to wait for sunnier skies to reappear.

Walking through the woods up to Ohrid's fortress

There are a number of different approaches to Samuel’s Fortress, but I followed the track which leads up to it just above the Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo.  The climb takes you through a disorientating beech forest before finally bringing you out near the main entrance gate to the castle.

There’s meant to be an entrance fee of 30MKD, but I think the guy in the ticket booth must have gone for a ‘comfort break’ when I walked past, because I was able to do just that – walk past, without paying.  This then made me feel like some kind of criminal throughout the entirety of my visit, and I was convinced that I’d get noticed when I left and have to try and explain myself in order to escape arrest.

Still, it didn’t stop me from spending well over an hour up there.

Views of Lake Ohrid from the castle walls

Whilst records show that a fortress has stood on the top of Ohrid Hill since the 3rd century B.C, Samuel’s Fortress itself dates from the end of the 10th century.  The three-kilometre fortified wall has mostly been preserved in good condition (a chunk of which you can walk along), but the inside of the fortress is nothing but ruins awaiting restoration.

And even in spite of the weather, there were some spectacular 360-degree views of Ohrid from the castle walls.

Views of Lake Ohrid from Samuel's Fortress

3 | Take the scenic route back from the castle, along the western shores of Lake Ohrid

The map below shows the route I took up to the castle from the Church of Sv Jovan Kaneo (blue dotted line) and the route I took back (grey line), although if you download the North Macedonia map on Maps.me , it will give you a lot more detail.  This one doesn’t show all the tiny little footpaths I followed and all the viewpoints I stopped at.

ohrid travel

As you exit the main castle gate, turn right and follow the castle walls around. Keep your eyes peeled for a narrow track on your left that’s overgrown with vegetation, as that’s the one you’ll need to take.

It will bring you out high above the shores of the lesser-visited western side of Lake Ohrid, and you can follow the pathway all the way around the headland.

The western shores of Lake Ohrid

You’ll also find Labino Beach on route.  It’s a deserted little cove, which – had the weather been a bit nicer – would have made the perfect spot for a bit of swimming and relaxation away from the crowds.

The path down to Labino Beach, Lake Ohrid

4 | Check out the old Roman Theatre

I’ll be honest with you and tell you that I never made it here, but when I discovered its existence from a friend who’s also been to Ohrid and mentioned the amphitheatre in a comment on Facebook after I’d returned, I was absolutely gutted to have missed it.  So that you don’t do the same, it’s located near the Upper Gate.

The Roman theatre is over 2000 years old, but was only fully uncovered in the 1990s after a trial excavation in the early 20th century confirmed its exact location.

My friend Kath also tells me that there is an amazing restaurant overlooking the amphitheatre, which she 100% recommends if you want to sample some traditional Macedonian food in an atmospheric setting.  The restaurant is called Gladiator and gets glowing reviews on Trip Advisor .

5 | Take a paragliding flight over Lake Ohrid

If Stu is ever presented with the opportunity to go paragliding, you can bet your bottom dollar that he won’t be able to pass it up.  As a result we’ve taken some incredible flights all over the world, most recently in Mestia, Georgia .

It was our first day in Ohrid and we’d headed into town to find an ATM at which to withdraw some Macedonian denar.  Right opposite the ATM was, you’ve guessed it, a paragliding agency – Paragliding Ohrid .

Paragliding Ohrid operate from Cuba Libre beach – just under two kilometres or a 20-minute walk from the Port of Ohrid.  It’s part of a larger venture run by Paragliding Club Vertigo from Skopje, who’ve been in business since 2002 but only set up in Ohrid in 2010.  They run flights primarily during the Summer months (June to September), but will operate outside of these times if the weather permits.  You can contact them on Facebook here or by email at [email protected] .

Paragliding Ohrid. Look at those thundery skies!

If you’ve ever been paragliding before, you’ll know that the quality of the flight (particularly the length of time you are actually airborne for) is largely determined by weather conditions, and we had dark, cloudy skies and a distinct lack of thermals.

I’m not going to lie, it was disappointing.  But I think we’ve been so lucky with all of our other flights that I’d been spoiled a bit up until this one.  That said, I still loved the opportunity to view Ohrid from a bird’s eye perspective.

Birds-eye view of Ohrid, Paragliding Ohrid

6 | Take a walk along the lakeside

The primary reason we ended up doing this was to meet with our Paragliding Ohrid pilots at Cuba Libre beach, but I’d thoroughly recommend it as an activity in itself.  East of the port of Ohrid, you can walk right alongside the lake for several kilometres.

Lake Ohrid, Macedonia

If you’re lucky you’ll get to hear the frog chorus as well.

These little creatures gather in armies (interchangeable with ‘colonies’ and ‘knots,’ according to my internet research on collective nouns) close to the surface, with only their faces visible above the water.  And between them, they make one of the strangest sounds you’ve ever heard.

Lake Ohrid frog

As we walked back towards Ohrid’s Old Town following our paragliding experience with Paragliding Ohrid, the thunder clouds were really starting to build and we were convinced we were going to get caught out with not a single waterproof item between us (we’d left everything but the essentials back at our apartment).

It did make for some moody shots though.

Lake Ohrid, Macedonia

7 | Have dinner at lakeside Kaj Kanevche

Located next to Kaneo Beach at the quieter end of Ohrid’s Old Town, Kaj Kanevche was our favourite of the two (and only two!) lakeside restaurants that are located at this end of town.

Kaneo Beach and lakeside restaurants, Ohrid

Bearing in mind that Kaneo and Kaj Kanevche are right next to each other on the water’s edge, the prices were a lot lower at Kaj Kanevche and, in our opinion, the food was a lot better too.  Kaneo’s menu is primarily fish dishes, whereas Kaj Kanevche feature more traditional Macedonian food and a large choice for vegetarians.

If you’re deliberating over what to order, we can recommend the stuffed peppers and beans in a pan (which had a lovely rich, smoky flavour), and the Greek salad was definitely one of the better ones I’ve eaten.

At both restaurants there is a high probability that you’ll be joined by one or two of the local cat population at some point during your meal – especially if you’re eating fish.

Lakeside Kaneo restaurant viewed from Kaj Kanevche

And that’s just about all we had time for during our (just shy of) two days in Ohrid.  If you’ve visited Ohrid and have any other recommendations for things to do in town, please leave them in the comments below.

Ohrid is by far the most beautiful city on the Balkans (sharing the 1st place with Plovdiv in Bulgaria) for me. I was there this June when I embarked on a bicycle tour across Macedonia. Did you know there are 365 churches in Ohrid? One for every day of the year.

' src=

Plovdiv is still on my list of Balkan cities to visit! And I’m really interested to read about your bicycle tour across Macedonia 🙂 Did you organise this yourself or was it a tour? Yes, I read that there once was a total of 365 churches in Ohrid (in fact, I included this fact in my blog post). I think only a fraction of them still exist though?

' src=

Did you travel further afield? We’re planning a trip to go from ohrid to (hopefully) Mikrolimni in Greece on the far side of the next lake. We’re after advice on borders and taxis!

Hi Julie 🙂 We didn’t, I’m afraid as we were literally at the end of a road trip around Albania, and had primarily travelled to Ohrid as flights home were cheaper from there than they were from Tirana! That sounds like a fab trip you’re planning though, and I hope you manage to find the answer elsewhere 🙂

Lady’s Lake Ohrid Travel Guide

Today I want to bring you my Lake Ohrid travel guide. This lake in North Macedonia is home to the city of Ohrid, which is one of the most beautiful spots in the Balkans and one of the best places to visit in Europe . With rich history and stunning scenery, it’s worth a special trip.

Lake Ohrid Travel

Lake Ohrid Travel

Lake Ohrid is paradise. Straddling the border between Albania and North Macedonia in the Balkans , the ancient body of water lies at the base of green mountains and stone fortresses.

Its perimeter is dotted with cities and towns that are home to some of the most important churches in North Macedonian Orthodox history.

The most famous of the cities is aptly called Ohrid, and I was excited to enter my 77th country there.

How to Get to Lake Ohrid

If Lake Ohrid is paradise, traveling there from Tirana is exactly the opposite.

The bus company that sold me my ticket failed to mention that instead of taking the direct, two-hour route to Ohrid, the bus was going to drive all the way in the other direction first.

Ferry from Ohrid to Sveti Naum on Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Yes, to get to Lake Ohrid I traveled way out to the city of Durresi on the coast, then traversed the entire country of Albania before reaching the border with North Macedonia.

By the time I got to Struga, the closest town to Ohrid, I’d been on the bus for five-and-a-half hours. While the Albanian countryside was scenic, it wasn’t five-and-a-half-hours scenic.

Where to Stay on Lake Ohrid

After sharing a taxi to the city with some fellow Americans I met on the bus, I staggered up a tiny cobblestone street to my accommodation in Ohrid, Villa and Winery Mal Sveti Kliment .

Door Handle in Ohrid

I’d been upgraded to the penthouse apartment, which consisted of a bedroom, a bathroom, and a large living room with a kitchen. The furniture was beautiful and the decor was unique to the region.

But the best part about the apartment was the view. The panoramic windows looked out onto Lake Ohrid, offering stunning vistas of orange tile rooftops and royal blue water.

Villa and Winery Mal Sveti Kliment was located on a quiet street right at the junction between the modern part of the city and the historic hillside where most of the sightseeing highlights were located. It was perfect.

Things to Do in Ohrid

After settling into my room, I took a walk into Ohrid. I started my stroll in the modern area, where there was a large pedestrianized shopping street. Stores sold everything from clothing to ice cream, and the place was bustling.

Farther away from the lake, I stumbled upon a 900-year-old plane tree with a massive trunk, as well as a farmers’ market laden with fresh fruits and vegetables, peppers in particular.

Peppers at a market on Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

In fact, I didn’t even need to go to the market to find fresh fruit in Ohrid. There was fresh produce all over.

Every street I walked down had trees dripping with golden pears, ripe apples, big blackberries, and fat figs. Bright red peppers hung from windowsills, and the whole city had an aura of abundance.

Grapes growing in Ohrid, North Macedonia

As did the lake. After visiting the market, I walked along Lake Ohrid. As I did, I passed fishermen with their nets and saw tiny minnows swarming around ships in the harbor.

The high season had just ended, but there were still a few boats plying the route from Ohrid to Sveti Naum, a nearby 17th-century monastery.

Ferry on Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia

With only a day and a half on Lake Ohrid, I didn’t have time for Sveti Naum. But it wasn’t a problem. The historic part of Ohrid was bursting with religious buildings.

Everything from 11th-century Catholic churches to icon-filled Orthodox ones and beautiful historic mosques graced the city.

Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo in Ohrid, North Macedonia

On my second day in Ohrid, I explored some of these temples to the deities. I started at the tiny church with the big name, Sveta Bogorodica Bolnicka.

Originally used in the 14th century to quarantine visitors to Ohrid who might have carried the plague, the pint-sized place of piety was still a working church.

The historic frescoes were stunning, and the woodcarvings in the space above the altar were beautiful.

House with flowers in Ohrid, North Macedonia

Speaking of frescoes, I soon moved onto the Sveta Sofija Cathedral, which had works of art dating back to the 11th century.

The church had been converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period, and hundreds of years of whitewashing the walls meant the Christian art underneath was remarkably intact. It was breathtaking.

Sveta Sofija Cathedral in Ohrid

From there I walked along a boardwalk and beside several beach-side restaurants to reach the end of Ohrid. High on a hill overlooking the lake sat the 13th-century church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo.

Its umbrella-like dome was reminiscent of the Armenian style, and while its interior was a bit bare, its stunning architecture and beautiful views across Lake Ohrid more than compensated for it.

Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo in Ohrid, North Macedonia

A set of stairs led up another hill from there, and as I climbed them the way became a walking trail. Soon I found myself in the middle of an enchanted pine forest.

Continuing, I came across a castle. Built long ago to protect Ohrid from enemy invaders, the walls of Car Samoil’s Fortress now act as a great vista point.

Retracing my steps a bit, I meandered over to the majestic modern church of Sveti Kliment i Pantelejmon. While it was built in recent times, it sat right next to a 4th-century one with beautiful Roman mosaics and a baptismal font.

Another Roman creation in the area was an amphitheater. Uncovered in 1984, the classical semi-circle was repurposed for concerts and shows in Ohrid.

Not far from there was the stunning city gate, which was just a few steps away from the famous 13th-century church of Sveti Kliment.

This particular church was so rich in historic art and iconography I could have stayed for hours taking it all in. It was one of the most stunning interiors I’ve ever seen.

Church of Sveti Kliment in Ohrid

After I’d made a pilgrimage to all the famous churches in Ohrid, I spent time meandering up and down the cobblestone streets.

I passed in and out of an art gallery, a restaurant or two, and a paper-making studio with what the proprietor said was one of two official copies of the original Gutenberg printing press (the other being in Bled, Slovenia, another place with a stunning lake that reminded me a lot of Ohrid ).

At the end of my stay on Lake Ohrid, the owner of Villa and Winery Mal Sveti Kliment was kind enough to give me a ride to the bus station, which was several kilometers outside the old town.

I bought my ticket to travel to Skopje , and let myself be lured out of paradise by the call of the capital of North Macedonia. To be continued…

Beautiful! It seems Ohrid had a bit of everything — nature, history, luxury, comfort. I love the hotel where you stayed.

That’s true, bluepop. It really had a lot going for it, and the hotel was great, too!

I have to correct you. There is no two hour ride from Tirana to Ohrid 🙂 The highway is better, going from Tirana to Durres, Elbasan and Ohrid then going through the mountain and believe me its the same distance on time travel because the road through the mountain is not a good one 😀

Thanks Dren! That makes me feel better about the long ride!

It always amazes me how much history and ancient buildings, ruins, and art still remains throughout Europe. The past couple weeks you’ve been to so many places that I’ve never learned anything about…I look forward to reading your newest updates every time!!

Thanks Pam, I appreciate it. I am amazed by the history in the region as well!

Considering I’ve been on a church-sponsored trip around the UK and have also traveled other places in Europe, I’m usually not that impressed by yet another church, but these are amazing. The style of architecture isn’t like anything I’ve seen before, and they’re really beautiful.

I agree, Emily! These churches were really unique!

It looks absolutely gorgeous wow! I want to see more of your apartments!!!

Thanks Andi! The apartment was great, and had really gorgeous views over the lake. I will post more photos to Facebook soon!

Wow, gorgeous place! I have never really considered Macedonia for my travels but now I definitely am!

I hope you go sometime! It’s such a great place to visit!

Do you remember how much your bus ticket from Tirana to Ohrid was?

I don’t, but nothing is very expensive there.

  • Why Visiting Ohrid Macedonia Should...

Why Visiting Ohrid, Macedonia, Should Be on Your Bucket List

The beautiful streets of Ohrid, Macedonia

Home to narrow, cobblestoned streets and medieval-esque architecture, a visit to Ohrid may seem like a trip back in time. Yet to be hit by huge waves of tourism, Ohrid is a vacationer’s paradise, with glimmering beaches, spectacular views, and a wealth of Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine – all available on a budget.

Go for the history.

Nicknamed the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkans’, Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe, and was once considered to be the epicentre of religion and Slavic culture. Its history is evident in every building that lines the city’s old town. However, it is Lake Ohrid that makes the city a unique historical artefact. At three million years old, it stands as one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, and gives Ohrid the prestige of being named as both a cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage site.

The beautiful church overlooking the lake

It’s all about location, location, location

See unbelievable natural landscapes.

What Ohrid lacks in coastline, it makes up for in character and natural beauty . Its lake offers pockets of beachy areas that reveal views of the surrounding mountains and hills. Along the shoreline, carefully reconstructed stilted villages give the area an Italian vibe, while waterside resorts make it the perfect place to relax in the sun. For those tired of the beach, hikes that lead around the shoreline and into the mountains are especially tempting. The more vigorous hiking and cycling trails will reward their conquerors with a beautiful overhead view of the lake.

Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia

Go for the views, stay for the food

Macedonian cuisine is reason enough to come to the city. It is unlikely that you’ll make the trip to Ohrid without hearing about Dr. Falafel, which serves up some of the best falafel sandwiches in the region, with fresh hummus and pickled vegetables. Macedonian food has been influenced by a variety of cultures, but largely focuses on Mediterranean and Turkish flavours, with a hint of Italian zest. Typical dishes include flaky kifli pastries, rich vegetable and meat stew known as turli tava, and tavče-gravče , a delicious bean dish. Local foods are made from scratch, focusing on quality and freshness, while the lake ensures that there is never a shortage of fresh seafood.

Check out some incredible architecture

Once boasting 365 churches, the city has a fascinating architectural layout, full of monasteries, fortresses and castles. Some of the architecture dates back to 200BC, including the city’s ancient theatre, which was formerly used to host gladiator fights. The well-preserved grounds now serve as a concert and theatre venue. Bring some beer and snacks and head to the path just above the famous 13th-century Saint Jovan Kaneo Church to watch the sun as it sets over the lake. Gorgeous views are guaranteed.

Dance the night away

While unassuming, Ohrid has a modest but lively nightlife for anybody looking for a good time. Lakeside bars and cafés offer drinks and desserts until 1am, while jazz lovers can listen to live music most nights at The Jazz Inn. For those looking for a little more of a wild night out, Club Havana brings in DJs from all over the region to get the crowd jumping until 5am.

Taking a boat out on Lake Ohrid is the ideal activity for a sunny day

Break out the shorts

Ohrid transforms into a sunny paradise by May, with little rain, and temperatures that range from a balmy 23°C (73°F), to 31°C (89°F). The weather is perfect for spending the day relaxing on a beach or sipping a beverage at a café. For the more adventurous traveller, there are many outdoor activities offered such as kayaking and cliff jumping. Boat rentals are extremely cheap, and soaking in the sun from the middle of the lake makes for a carefree day.

More bang for your buck

If you’re looking to go further with your money, forget Paris, London and Barcelona – Ohrid is where it’s at. The country is a great spot for budget-conscious travellers, offering free walking tours, reduced entrances to museums, and extremely cheap day activities (renting kayaks for two hours will only cost you about $5). With meals typically costing between $4-8 and accommodation being found for as little as $10 a night, Ohrid is a budget-friendly haven.

There is no doubt that Ohrid is a tourist treasure trove just waiting to be discovered. Its natural beauty, Instagram-worthy scenery and budget friendly activities marks it as an up and coming choice for tourists looking for their next spot, so go before the tourist circus begins.

  • Books from Ohrid to read on the beach or take home.

Some of the modern buys in this birth place of Cyrillic literacy, include books from Happy Something Press, Ohrid's book publisher in English, founded by Macedonian born author and Oxford University student Evangelina Cifliganec [6] , known for her contemporary novel "Happy Something" originally written in English. Its 2nd edition was published by the publisher's Ohrid branch, HappySomething.com [7] , as the author was said to be inspired by Ohrid. You might find it easier online.

He reminds us of a critical time in many of our lives, when childhood is finally behind us, but the road ahead is quite uncertain." A copy of the book can be found in all Ohrid`s bookstores and there is no difference in price between different stores. Bulgarian translation of the same book is available, as well.

Our Dutch Friend A. den Doolaard is another well-selling book written by the Ohrid born writer and photographer Misho Yuzmeski. In this book he tells the story of the Dutch writer, and his connections with Ohrid and Macedonia, set on the background of the recent Macedonian history. This book is available in Macedonian and English, and it could be a very useful reading especially for those interested in Macedonian history, Dutch literature history and Dutch-Macedonian relations. One of the nicest and most original souvenirs to take home from Ohrid.

Short History of the Macedonian People by Risto Stefov was published in Ohrid in 2011. This book is a chronological outline of historical events involving Macedonia and the Macedonian people from ancient times to the present.

Eat [ edit ]

Restaurants and hotels throughout Macedonia are proudly displaying Ohrid trout (Ohridska pastrmka) on their menus because it is very delicious but it is illegal to catch the fish along the Macedonian shoreline of Lake Ohrid. Please do not support or encourage the consumption of the trout. Ohrid trout, an ancient living fish, is in severe danger. There is also another trout species called Belvica. Some popular restaurants in Ohrid known to most people in town simply by the name are:

  • Belvedere , - in the city center Tel: +389 46 265 117
  • Damar Restaurant , - in the old city +389 75 215 315
  • Dalga , - with a terrace over the lake in the old part of town +389 46 25 999
  • Galeo Fish Restaurant , - in the city center +389 46 285 631

Try these foods:

  • Ribna Čorba , a traditional fish soup served in most restaurants, mostly as a starter.
  • Burek , a layered pastry inherited from Ottoman times and popular for breakfast here. Choose with meat, cheese or spinach/cheese (arguably the best), and take a cup of traditional Macedonian yogurt. Modest looking place Burekđilnica Igor makes the best burek in town, Žito Leb' s is also good.
  • Makalo , a starter spread made with garlic and yogurt.
  • Gjomleze , baked layered pancakes cut in a rhomboid shape, and usually served with white cheese.
  • Ohridski Gevrek , a traditional bakery product. You can buy it in Žito Leb' . Try it with yogurt or peach juice.
  • Sirena terrase , Trpejca . Really great little place right on the (stony) beach. If you're doing a drive around the lake, stop here for lunch, park your car in the main square (more of an empty space than a square), walk down and you will see a sign for Sirena terase, it will point you down to the beach, it is just one building over to the left. You can sit right on the bay, with a panoramic view, and have lunch - great fish. Lunch for two, no alcohol, was less than 1000 denars.

Drink [ edit ]

The traditional Macedonian alcoholic beverages are rakija and mastika. Boza is a refreshing drink on a hot summer day; it was spread throughout Macedonia with the arrival of the Turks and it has significant nutritional value. Other popular drinks are Macedonian wines called Kavadarka and Smederevka and Skopsko beer . Try boza with ice-cream. Its called "Ambasador".

  • Cafe Galerija , Kliment Ohridski ( city center, just before the entrance to the old city ). 08-00 . If you like to have your morning coffee at the city center, enjoying the view of the lake, you better find the small authentic coffee shop named "Galerija". It is one of the oldest coffee shops in the city. Enjoy in the lake view and the city at the same time. 80 cents .

Sleep [ edit ]

For an average price of around 10 - €15 per night, you will find an excellent private facilities, located mostly in the Old Town. Fastest and safest way of booking accommodation in Ohrid hotels and apartments is to visit website [ www.visitohrid.org ] On the page are published different information which help tourists during their stay in Ohrid. While arriving there, to get a host you can ask at the nearest Tourist Information Bureau (at the bus station, for example). However, the best solution is to make your reservation in advance via Internet or phone, having in mind the growing popularity of Ohrid as tourist destination:

During the summer months it is a very bad idea to travel to Ohrid without a bed booked as the city fills fast and you can find yourself being sent from landlord to landlord without success. • Struga , just 15 km away, is a nice place to enjoy a coffee or a base to visit one of the cave churches and monasteries.

Taxi to Struga from Ohrid costs around €5-7, or minibuses leave the Ohrid bus station for Struga approximately every 20 minutes, tickets for these cost only 40 Denars.

  • Pogradec , a small city in Albania is just on the other side of the lake, and worth a visit for those with extra time in Ohrid.

East coast of Lake Ohrid:

The east coast is the most beautiful part of Ohrid Lake. It is part of Galičica National Park and it is protected by UNESCO along with the lake for its natural values. The first part of the east coast is less interesting, the road goes along the lake and is lined with hotels, tourist settlements and organized beaches.

  • Gorica Hotel beach – this is maybe the most beautiful beach on the coast, it's covered with small pebbles and cut between deep rocks. Unfortunately it can get very crowded, so come here in early morning or late afternoon. If you visit Ohrid off-season this is the place to come and enjoy a great swim. There is a small cafe on the beach where one might also get some snacks and ice cream or rent beach beds. Walking along the coast from the city center to this beach is scenic, even more past it, and takes about 1.5h. The presidential Villa Ohrid, where the Balkan's Peace Framework was signed, is in the woods near too.
  • St.Stefan Cave church 14th c. If you have time take the scenic walk, up to 1 hr, along the coast from Gorica Hotel beach.Entrance is €1 or 60 denars. Make the time to sit down and have a coffee (20 denears) with the friendly guide Alexander who speaks excellent English and will happily talk to you about Ohrid, Macedonia, the church as well as the country's politics.
  • Elshani village is a good starting point for a number of hiking trails for all ages and skill levels. Hikers can follow trails on either the north or south end of the village to the nearby villages Konjsko or Pestani. The village itself is completely rebuilt and has no significant buildings or natural attractions to visit. Very few people speak western languages and basic knowledge of Macedonian or other Slavic languages might be helpful for finding your way around. In the local shops you can get some food or drinks, but there are no bars or restaurants. Drivers should be extremely careful on the steep and narrow road leading to the village.
  • Peštani village – this once quiet fishing village has given up to tourism, with almost every house renting rooms and many restaurants and cafes. Desaret hotel has a good organized beach. If you don't like camping but like to enjoy the great beaches and parties in Gradishte you can stay here.

From here on the coast becomes more wild and beautiful with stunning views over the lake.

  • Trpejca village – due to the its setting between the rocks this small fishing village has managed to preserve its charm and escape the overgrow of tourism. It has a great long but narrow beach with the cleanest waters on the lake. It has couple of good small lakeside fish and barbecue restaurants and a bar on the left side of the beach. If you don't like the beach or it seems crowded take one of the small boats and ask to be taken to one of the isolated beaches around the village and enjoy the lake by yourself, the boat will come back for you at arranged time (50-100 denars). Last bus for Ohrid at 20:50 from the main road (August 2017)
  • Ljubaništa village – Many people seem to like it, probably because of the long, sandy beach. There is camping here. Beautiful nature makes it a perfect family place to be during summer vacation. In the camp you can take a trailer for usually 4 people, a bungalow or you can take a place to put a tent. There is no night life in this place. After 10:00 PM loud music is forbidden.
  • St.Bogorodica (Zaum) church – the church can be reached only by boat from Trpejca or Ljubaništa villages. Ask on the beach or in one of the restaurants. It was built on a stunning location among the rocks on a small beach in 1361. The architecture is exquisite, but the main reason to come here is to see the fresco of St.Anna breastfeeding Virgin Mary.
  • St.Naum monastery – 45 mins by bus or less by cab from Orhid. Bus ticket 110 denars (August 2015) (in August 2017, last bus leaves St.Naum for Ohrid at 19:15), cab drivers can be persuaded to drive you to/from there at the same price ("po kartu"). At the other end of the lake and is accessible by bus, taxi or boat. It is on the Albanian border so make sure you don't wander off into the military zone. If you take a taxi, it may be worth asking the driver to veer off into one of the picturesque mountain villages overlooking the lake to stop for a cheap lunch of grilled meat and cheese. One of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia and an important pilgrimage place. Breathtaking setting on a plateau over Ohrid Lake and Galičica mountain towering from behind. It was founded in the 910 by St. Naum, but the present-day church was built in the 16th c. Of the original church just the side chapel with the grave of St. Naum still stands. The frescoes were painted in 1806 (the side chapel frescoes depict the life and miracles of St. Naum); in the first chamber of the church look for the fresco of St.Cyril and Methody and their students including St.Klement and St. Naum. The icon screen was made in 1711 and it is the oldest completely preserved wooden high icon screen in Macedonia. In the side chamber it is popular to get down on your knees and try to listen the heart of St. Naum. Around the church look for the peacocks including a rare albino one. Bigger part of the dormitories of the monastery are turned into a hotel now. Near the monastery there is a chapel with holy water and before are the big springs with a lovely cafe on a small island inside the springs. It is possible (and a great experience) to take a boat tour of the springs (available only in summer) 50 denars, but skip the short boat tour offered to see the monastery from the water. Next to the monastery the river enters the lake. Around the monastery there is a pleasant sandy beach.

If you're trying to get to Albania from Ohrid, note that you can go to the bus station just north of the old town and get tickets from the company Galeb (or try the main station building) to a variety of cities in Albania, not just Tirana. It is an early morning departure (about 4:30am) but you can take buses with facilitated transfers from Ohrid to Tirana, Durres, Vlore and even Sarande.
