Christina Aguilera, The X Tour, The SSE Wembley Arena, London live review

Pip Ellwood-Hughes

13 years have passed since Christina Aguilera last toured in the UK. That run was in support of her Back to Basics album in 2006, when Aguilera was arguably at the peak of her fame. Since that tour and album, Aguilera has struggled to recapture the commercial success she had enjoyed until that point and she instead concentrated on being a judge on the hit series The Voice US. In 2016 she departed from the show to refocus on music and in 2018 she released her eighth studio album Liberation. Earlier this year she launched her debut Las Vegas Residency, The Xperience, and now she’s back in the UK with The X Tour.

It’s safe to say anticipation was high at The SSE Arena tonight following Aguilera’s sold-out show at the venue the night prior. Arriving on stage shortly before 9pm, Aguilera launched into Bionic, which quickly transformed into a remix of Your Body. Before the audience had time to adjust to the transition between the songs, Aguilera took things back to the very beginning with a revamped version of Genie in a Bottle.

Two things were noticeable over the course of those three songs; firstly that Aguilera was going to be performing mostly shortened versions of her hits and secondly that key changes were the order of the night, but not in the way the audience likely expected. Taking a leaf from Janet Jackson’s books, Aguilera chose not to sing full versions of the majority of her songs in the set list. Instead we got abbreviated versions that quickly jumped from one song to the next. That was a bit disappointing but not as disappointing as the lack of her signature vocals.

At times Aguilera barely sang during her songs instead letting the backing track and the backing singers do most of the work. There were times she was blatantly not singing at all and when it came to those killer notes she’s built a career on, for the most part she lowered the key and didn’t deliver. I can understand lowering the key for some songs as it would likely ruin her voice to belt at the extent she does live night after night, but because it happened so frequently the impact of the songs was lacking.

The Voice Within, in shortened form, was one of the few times we really got to that hear that voice and it sounded strong. Free from the heavy backing vocals and backing track, it was a rare moment to connect with the voice that made us fall in love with Aguilera in the first place. Despite the dodged big notes, she still impressed but it was one of two moments across the evening where she let her voice really run free. The other time was Ain’t No Other Man where she nailed the opening note and mostly delivered the rest of the song.

Too frequently through the set Aguilera ran off stage for a costume change. In a show that lasted only 80 minutes at most, she was probably on the stage for about 60 minutes at best. There were regular video intervals and smoke and mirrors with the dancers taking centre-stage (and one of them limping off after injuring himself). When it came to the hits, Aguilera gave an unwanted reggae twist to a medley of What a Girl Wants and Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You), and that was over almost as quickly as it began.

The encore came all too quickly and I heard people around me asking ‘is that it?’ as the dancers waved goodbye while the closing bars of the Pitbull song Feel This Moment, which Aguilera sang on, played out. Aguilera came back for Beautiful and Fighter, with Beautiful being the stronger moment of the two. The show came to an end with Let There Be Love, a song from her 2012 Lotus album that only die-hard fans would know, and once inflatable balls and confetti blasted into the audience, Aguilera was gone and the show was over.

Having been a big fan of Christina Aguilera since her debut album back in 1999, I left The SSE Wembley Arena a bit disappointed. I saw Aguilera on her Stripped Tour in 2002 and she was incredible. Her 2006 Back to Basics tour set a standard for pop artists that has barely been matched in terms of live vocals and production. The X Tour by comparison was underwhelming. The frenetic pace, the lack of those signature notes and a far too short stage time is not what I’d expect from someone of Aguilera’s calibre. The show was entertaining enough but having seen her at her best, I know she can do a lot better than this.

The X Tour (Christina Aguilera) Explained

The X Tour (a play on the singer's nickname, Xtina ) was the sixth concert tour by American singer Christina Aguilera , in support of her eighth studio album, Liberation (2018). Led by LiveNation, it was surprise announced on the same day as the ticket sale by Aguilera herself on March 4, 2019, and serves as the European counterpart to The Liberation Tour the year before. The tour was scheduled to run concurrent with Aguilera's own Las Vegas concert residency,, with the tour running during the breaks of the residency. The tour was split into two legs, with the first leg consisting of 15 shows taking place across Europe, and an additional three in the second leg taking place in Mexico. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Background and development

Following the announcement of The Liberation Tour , which toured across North America, Aguilera's fans began to ask her if there would be any shows in other continents. However, The Liberation Tour was never extended and did not visit territories outside of North America. To combat this, Aguilera planned the tour in secret as a surprise. [5] When announcing her Las Vegas residency, Christina Aguilera: The Xperience , on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 29, 2019, Aguilera teased touring in Europe, saying: "I still want to see my fans all over and in Europe and everything [...]". On March 4, 2019, Aguilera took to social media to surprise fans by announcing the tour and that tickets would go on sale that same week, with some of the shows being already available. [6]

Aguilera had last toured in Europe in 2006 with her Back to Basics Tour , with The X Tour marking her first the arena tour of the continent in twelve years. [7] [8] In March 2019 it was revealed that one of the cities the singer would visit will be Stuttgart. [9] On June 26, 2019 it was announced that a New Zealand quartet Drax Project would open for Aguilera during her European concert tour. [10]

On September 13, 2019, Aguilera announced that The X Tour would be extended to include eight more shows in Europe, as well as three shows in Mexico. [11] The pre-sale would last between September 18 and 19, with tickets going on sale on the 20.

Commercial performance

Tickets for several shows were made available alongside the announcement, with the rest of the tickets for the nine announced shows going on sale that same week, Following the announcement, all 8,416 tickets for the tour's second show at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium sold out. After conclusion of the first nine shows on July 23, 2019, Aguilera returned to Las Vegas to continue her residency, Christina Aguilera: The Xperience.

Due to the high demand, a second date was added for the following night in London. [12]

Critical response

The tour received strong critical praise. Katie Hawthorne of The Guardian opined that "this dazzling spectacle feels almost like a one-woman variety show, were it not for the eight dancers, three singers, full band and mountain of glitter". She complimented Aguilera's voice, calling it "genuinely jaw-dropping", "rich", and "powerful". [13] Una Mullally, an editor of The Irish Times , noted that "as Aguilera explodes on to the stage, her current energy is as fierce as her past legacy". [14] Tim Heap, writing for the gay-themed magazine Attitude , commended on the show's setlist: "For every high-energy banger, from a reworked 'Genie in a Bottle' to a 'Candyman'/'I Want Candy' mash-up, there’s a ballad that really lets the vocals soar". He gave the tour a four stars rating, and added: "It’s not always easy to be a fan of Xtina, but when live performances are this good, it’s worth it". [15] Katie Fitzpatrick from Manchester Evening News wrote that, "From the punchy pop of 'Ain’t No Other Man' to the bugle bop on 'Candyman', this is a flawless and full-throttle journey through Aguilera's career—and the costumes are fabulous". [16] She also noted that The X Tour "delivers the razzmatazz" of the singer's Las Vegas residency . [16] Helsingin Sanomat's Anton Vanha-Majamaa provided a positive review, and praised the tour for its feminist statements, intense theatricality, and rich choreography. [17] He called Aguilera "one of the most important stars on the pop music scene". [17]

Metro s reviewer Rishma Dosani, who attended the show at Wembley Arena , praised Aguilera for her emotional performance of "Beautiful". [18] Writing for Express & Star , Kirsten Rawlins stated that The X Tour was "a beautiful show from start to end, filled with messages of self-love, peace, and female empowerment—mixed in with smoulderingly sexy costumes and dance moves." [19] She also called Aguilera an artist of "exceptional talent, power, and humanity". [19]

This set list is from the July 4, 2019, show in Paris. It is not intended to represent all dates of the tour. [21]

Watch: Mary Byrne reveals she ‘hit’ Christina Aguilera at X Factor final

the x tour christina aguilera

Irish X Factor contestant Mary Byrne has shared details of the time she met Christina Aguilera and accidentally ‘hit’ the singer into a fire extinguisher.

The Dublin native appeared on the seventh series of the singing competition making it to the final alongside fellow Irish singer Niall Horan, who was part of One Direction at the time.

As was custom on the Simon Cowell-produced show finalists performed alongside a famous singer, with Christina Aguilera appearing on the show to perform alongside Liverpudlian Rebecca Ferguson.

Mary Byrne

Recalling the moment she met Christina Aguilera, Mary admitted she knew of the singer, but ‘didn’t know what she looked like.’

Speaking earlier this week on The Six O’Clock Show, Katja prompted the anecdote noting there was a rumour that ‘Mary pushed Christina Aguilera into a fire extinguisher.’

‘Look! Come here, I was on The X Factor , and I was 50 years of age. I knew Christina Aguilera, but I didn’t know what she looked like. I wouldn’t know her personally,’ Mary admitted.

‘So I was walking around the corner and Christina Aguilera’s coming. I didn’t know who she was, by the way, and she got this close to me and whatever she twirled and I twirled, I hit her.’

Mary added that Christina ‘went into the fire extinguisher.’

‘I said: “I’m sorry,” and she says, “No problem, ma’am,”‘ she told Katja and co-presenter Zeinab Elguzouli, as well as Paul Ryder who was also a guest on the show, and an avid Christina Aguilera fan.

‘Did she say that?’ Paul asked, aghast, ‘Wow. You’ve spoken to Christina Aguilera?!’

‘Yeah, and I hit her,’ Mary confirms with a chuckle.

Mary added that it was actually Niall Horan who informed her of who Christina was, with the Mullingar native beside Mary when the incident happened.

‘He said: “Do you know who that is?” And I said, “No.” He said, “That’s Christina!” I said, “It is NOT!”‘ she recalled

‘Scarlet for you!’

The Voice: Contestants Who Had The Most Successful Careers Post-Show

  • The Voice premiered in 2011, facing strong competition from shows like American Idol and The X Factor.
  • The original coaches on The Voice significantly boosted their careers.
  • Despite early skepticism, The Voice has proven to be a hit show for NBC, fostering successful careers for contestants like Morgan Wallen.

There haven't been many substantial music stars that started their careers on The Voice , but certain contestants from the show did go on to have illustrious careers. When the series premiered on NBC in 2011, it faced stiff competition. American Idol was still the roaring success it had always been. TV personality and music mogul Simon Cowell had just started the American version of The X Factor , which was extremely popular in the UK. It seemed redundant to have another musical competition series, but at least The Voice is still airing, unlike The X Factor.

Currently, The Voice season 25 is airing, and the series offers something different than its competitors. There's no embarrassing auditions, no behind-the-scenes drama between the celebrity co-stars, and a format about coaching the singers on the show. From the first season, it became clear that The Voice would become a hit show for NBC, and that's precisely what happened. The original coaches (Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and CeeLo Green) significantly boosted their careers. Sensibilities changed among viewers, who grew tired of the infamous Simon's nastiness. They gravitated toward more positive talent competitions like The Voice and America's Got Talent .

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Danielle bradbery, the voice season 4.

Danielle Bradbery competed on The Voice season 4 during its early years. The judges at the time were Adam, Shakira, Blake, and Usher. When Danielle got out on stage, she sang Taylor Swift's "Mean" and instantly got Adam, Blake, and Usher to turn their chairs around for her. While all three guys did their best to win Danielle over, she ultimately chose Blake and stayed on his team until the end of the season. Danielle had a great run throughout the season and ultimately took home the title of winner for The Voice season 4. She took the title home after singing "Born to Fly" by Sara Evans.

Since appearing on The Voice season 4, Danielle has become a huge success in the country music sphere. Shortly after Danielle won The Voice, she signed a music contract with Big Machine Records and came out with her first self-titled album, Danielle Bradbery, in November 2013. During this time, Danielle got to sing at the Grand Ole Opry, was the supporting act for Brad Paisley, and her song "My Day" was even played during the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

In 2017, she came out with her second album, I Don't Believe We've Met . The album had a few hit songs, such as "Sway" and "Worth It." On April 19, Danielle came out with her latest hit "Younger and Wiser," which she also revealed on her Instagram page.

Cassadee Pope

The voice season 3.

While The Voice shot Cassadee Pope to fame , she was already famous in her own right. Cassadee was already a well-known face in the emo/punk world as she was the lead singer of the band Hey Monday. However, Cassadee wanted more out of her music career. She auditioned for The Voice season 3, where she sang "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia and had all four chairs turn around. She ultimately chose to be on Team Blake. Cassadee ultimately won the competition , making her the first female to win The Voice at the time. She released her first studio country album, Frame by Frame, in 2013, shortly after her win.

Most Shocking Eliminations On The Voice In 2022

Cassadee had a lot of success with Hey Monday, touring around the world.

Since her time on The Voice , Cassadee has taken a step back from country music and has reverted back to her pop-punk days. She released a new song in March called "Eye Contact" and is even performing at a festival in Arizona in July. Cassadee's success from The Voice has allowed her to dabble in music genres and become a success in anything she does.

Christina Grimmie

The voice season 6.

Christina Grimmie was a finalist during The Voice season 6, placing third on Adam's team. She two had a bit of a following before joining the singing competition. Christina was very popular on YouTube for her singing videos, which allowed her to be discovered by Mandy Teefy, Selena Gomez's mom (via MTV ). Christina later got the opportunity to open for Selena during Selena's We Own The Night tour in 2011. A couple of years after touring with Selena, Christina got the chance to audition for The Voice season 6 and made it very far in the competition.

After The Voice , Christina went on to have a great career. She signed with Island Records and released her first studio album, All Is Vanity , in 2017, shortly after Christina's death . In October 2016, Christina was tragically assassinated by an armed fan during a meet-and-greet after performing at a venue in Florida .

This event sent shockwaves through the music community and was particularly devastating for The Voice fans. Following her death, many celebrities responded to the news offering their condolences, such as her The Voice coach Adam, Justin Biever, Selena, Dove Cameron, and more. Despite her untimely death, Christina is still one of the most successful The Voice singers to date.

Melanie Martinez

Melanie Martinez was a contestant during The Voice season 3 when Cassadee won the title as the winner. Melanie placed sixth place in Adam's team. While Melanie didn't make it as far as the first three contestants above, she became successful in her own right. After appearing on The Voice , Melanie signed to Atlantic Records, where she released her EP Dollhouse , with one of her songs featured in the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show .

Her debut album, Cry Baby , was released in 2015 and was a huge hit for Melanie. For the young men and women who were constantly on Tumblr during this time will definitely remember Melanie and her signature musical sound. After Cry Baby , Melanie came out with more music that did well, with "Play Date" becoming one of the most-played songs on Spotify in the U.S. after its popularity on TikTok in April 2020 (via Idolator ). Melanie continues to be a success as she released her third music video for "Tunnel Vision" in December 2023 .

Morgan Wallen

Not many will know this, but world-renowned country music singer Morgan Wallen was a contestant on The Voice season 6. He initially joined Usher's team before joining Team Adam later on. Morgan, however, was eliminated during the playoffs. Despite not making it far on The Voice , Morgan is without a doubt the most successful singer from The Voice .

Four years after appearing on the show, Morgan's stardom began to form . His single "Chasin' You" was a huge hit in 2019 and 2020. However, his album, One Thing at a Time , which was released in 2023, really put Morgan on the map. "Last Night" became the song of the summer in 2023 and is still a favorite for many. While Morgan's public image took a bit of a hit, as a video was recorded of him using a racial slur and his recent arrest in Nashville, he's still the most successful The Voice contestant.

The Voice has yet to launch as many successful careers as its competitors. On the other hand, all the coaches who appeared on The Voice over the years have enjoyed plenty of success from this platform. It is ultimately an excellent chance for them to connect with new audiences and show different sides of themselves that the mainstream public might not be aware of.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8 pm EDT on NBC.

Christina Applegate Suffering From "Gross" Sapovirus Symptoms After Unknowingly Ingesting Poop

Christina applegate contracted sapovirus—a virus transmitted through fecal-oral contact—amid her battle with multiple sclerosis: "someone else's poop went into my mouth and i ate it.".

Christina Applegate  is getting candid about a crappy experience.

The  Dead to Me  star graphically detailed her recent bout of sapovirus , a virus commonly transmitted through fecal-oral contact, colorfully joking that the illness led to "pissing out of my ass for a few days."

"I'm gonna be gross," Christina—who also struggles with multiple sclerosis —shared on the April 23 episode of her  MeSsy  podcast . "I woke up at 3 o'clock in the morning in a pool of s--t. Didn't know it happened, and having MS at 3 o'clock in the morning and trying to change your sheets, it's not fun."

According to Christina, the health ordeal all began a few weeks ago when someone "real close" to her "dropped the ball" and brought home COVID-19 , leading to her contract the virus for the first time. Due to her already being immunocompromised from MS, Christina experienced more severe symptoms, including a chest infection and a speeding heart rate.

"I was so dizzy," she recalled to cohost  Jamie-Lynn Sigler . "I was so sick. I couldn't eat. I couldn't anything."

Amid her illness, Christina took a stool test—during which she started vomiting because it was "so gross"—to figure out what was wrong. Eventually, she was diagnosed with sapovirus.

"It is when you ingest the fecal matter of someone else from your food," the 57-year-old explained of the virus. "Someone else's poop went into my mouth and I ate it."

Trending Stories

10-year-old boy calls 911 to report family's quadruple murder-suicide, ellen degeneres says she was "kicked out of show business", jon gosselin shares update on relationship with his children.

Christina believes she caught the virus after eating a takeout salad from a restaurant that's about to close down for an unrelated reason.

"I'm almost going on three weeks of being sick from this," she continued, adding sarcastically, "so that's my fun story."

And through dealing with the sapovirus and MS, which can  sometimes cause difficulties in bladder control , Christina said she's formed some serious opinions about adult diapers.

"Here's my problem: Why do they make them pretty for women?" the  Anchorman  alum noted. "Like, 'Hey baby, you wanna get down and dirty in my diaper lingerie with my own urine?'"

For more of Christina's candid takes about her health journey, keep reading.

Health Journey

Christina Applegate shared she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021.

"Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS," she shared on her social media channels that August. "It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a--hole blocks it."

First Public Appearance

"Oh, by the way, I have a disease," she joked during her November 2022 Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony , her first public appearance since her MS diagnosis. "Did you not notice? I'm not even wearing shoes."

Early Symptoms

Christina believes her MS journey actually began "six or seven years" before her 2021 diagnosis.

"I noticed, especially the first season [of  Dead to Me ], we'd be shooting and my leg would buckle," Christina explained during a March 2024 interview on Good Morning America . "I really just put it off as being tired, or I'm dehydrated, or it's the weather. Then nothing would happen for months, and I didn't pay attention."

By the time she was shooting the Netflix series' third and final season, the actress said she was "being brought to set in a wheelchair."

"I couldn't move that far," she recalled, "so I had to tell everybody because I needed help."

Making Moves

The Dead to Me star captioned this photo of her cane collection amid her battle with MS: "Walking sticks are now part of my new normal ."

Strong Statement

Joined by her daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble , Christina had a simple message for multiple sclerosis  while attending the 2023 SAG Awards: "F U MS."

After a receiving standing ovation at the 2023 Emmys, the Married...With Children alum quipped, " You're totally shaming me with disability by standing up."

Healing Through Humor

"I make these jokes because if I don't, I'll suffocate," Christina shared on a March 2024 episode on Armchair Expert , explaining why she often pokes fun at her condition. "I'll be done."

MS On Her Mind

"I have 30 lesions on my brain ," she said on the same podcast. "My biggest one is behind my right eye, so my right eye hurts a lot."

Legions are caused by the immune system attacking the myelin sheath around nerves, according to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust .

Getting Candid

Christina hasn’t held back when it comes to sharing her journey.

"It sucks," the Anchorman actress told late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel of her daily struggles with MS. "I'm not going to lie. I think anyone who has MS isn't going to be like, 'This is the best thing that ever happened to me!'"

In Her Bubble

When talking about her day-to-day life with the disease , Christina told Good Morning America in March 2024, "I live kind of in hell."

"But I might get to a place where I function a little bit better," she added. "Right now, I'm isolating, and that's kind of how I'm dealing with it—by not going anywhere because I don't want to do it. It's hard."

The Sweetest Support

Christina credited her Sweetest Thing costar Selma Blair —who was diagnosed with MS in 2018—for urging her to get tested for the disease.

"She said, 'You need to get checked for MS,'" Christina recalled during her GMA interview. "If not for her, it could've been way worse."

Friendship Never Dies

Christina confirmed that Dead to Me will likely be her last onscreen credit, telling Vanity Fair in May 2023, "I can’t even imagine going to set right now."

"I’m probably not going to work on-camera again, but I'm so glad that I went out with someone who is by far the greatest actress I’ve ever worked with in my entire life," she said of costar Linda Cardellini , "if not the greatest human I’ve ever known.
