Tour de Vines

Our small group of family & friends have not long returned from an amazing ebike trip with Tour de Vines down the east coast of Tasmania from Launceston to Hobart. Every aspect of our trip was a highlight. The itinerary was well paced with bike riding & enjoying various wine tastings along the way. The accommodation was excellent as were the meals. But more importantly than any of these were the 2 people who accompanied us throughout the tour. Fuchsia was our support rider who not only rode every day with the group, but kept everything running smoothly so we could all just relax & enjoy the ride. Her organisational skills coupled with her enthusiastic approach to everything was such a delight to experience. Bernard our amazing support vehicle driver was so much more than a driver. He always ensured the bikes were charged & ready to ride. His knowledge & experience were invaluable. I can honestly say our bike ride with Tour de Vines was definitely enhanced by having Fuchsia & Bernard as part of the team. I would also like to acknowledge the role of the owner of Tour de Vines – Damian. From my very 1st original enquiry Damian at all times has been professional, courteous & attentive to my questions & emails. Our small group had a fantastic experience with Tour de Vines & hopefully we will be able to enjoy another ride in the future.

The Tour de Tasmania was the second Tour De Vines trip we have done as a group. And it proved to be as good as the first. The guides, Joe and Bernard, were exceptional. Their combined experience, knowledge and enthusiasm added so much value to our trip. The accommodation at Freycinet was spectacular and the food along the way was terrific. There was more biking on the road than I had realised but the support vehicle behind was comforting. I also appreciated the tailoring of the trip to the wants of the group. We had a fabulous time.

Tour of Tasmania- Amazing scenery, high end and unusual accommodation, incredible food and wine tasting. Topped off by a fantastic group of fellow cyclists and Mick the best guide ever!

I recently completed a Tour de Vines Bike Tour on the East Coast of Tasmania, with a group of 6 other friends. Simply put, it was AMAZING adventure, greatly supported by the professional, humorous, knowledgeable, and ever-caring duo – Bernard and Fuchsia. It wasn’t long before we realised they were much more than tour guides, with their enthusiasm being infectious, and their friendship much appreciated. We are all keen to do another trip with Tour de Vines and would thoroughly recommend them. And if we are lucky enough to be supported once again by Bernard and Fuchsia, well, that would be the icing on the cake! Many thanks to you both for a memorable and most enjoyable experience!

Wow wow and triple wow!!! What a fantastic way to enjoy Tasmania’s scenery, food and vino. We loved this trip – the accommodation, the food (which is nearly all included) and the exquisite Tassie vino as well as the company all amazing and exceptional value.Add to that the fantastic organisation skills of our leader Damian and his offsider Bernard who was always there with words of wisdom and encouragement (when another hill emerged!!) and you have a PPH Pretty perfect holiday.

What a wonderful trip! With excellent places to stay, gourmet restaurants, a decadent seaside picnic and lots of wine tasting, this trip was excellent value. Led by our superb guides Fuschia, full of energy, always looking to improve our experience and maximise fun, and Bernard for whom nothing was a problem, looking after our bikes, route and safety. Our group had a truly fablous time holiday and unique experience of this beautiful part of Tasmania.

What a wonderful cycling trip we had from Launceston to Hobart. Over 8 days the Tour de Vines team provided a great platform for us to enjoy the road, accommodation and food. Our lead Fushcia was engaged and enthusiastic and was very conscious of ensuring we enjoyed the experience. Bernard brought deep knowledge and understanding, making the trip a great success. A lot of fun.

With some friends (old and new) we experienced a fabulous time cycling from Launceston to Hobart. Our guide Fuschia was an absolutely wonderful person with boundless energy and a keen sense of each individuals needs. Bernard was a fountain of knowledge on biking and an expert in repairs and taking care of the clients. With this team we had a great time. We experienced the wonder of the Tasmanian eastern coast and enjoyed some fantastic food and wine. We are already planning a return trip.

Thanks for an amazing bike/wine/food tour of eastern Tasmania! Great tour guides, wonderful scenery, excellent accommodation, detailed planning & fantastic group of fellow cyclers. E-bike option was worthwhile for us – particularly up hills!

To fully enjoy this guided cycling trip in Tasmania, you should be in good physical shape . While previous cycling experience is recommended for maximum enjoyment, the flexible approach ensures even casual beginner cyclists can join this adventure. The tour is graded as intermediate to challenging due to some hills along the route, but with the support van always nearby , the difficulty level is customizable to your preference.

There are six days of cycling with a rest day after the first four. Daily rides vary between 15.5 miles (25 km) and 34 miles (55 km) . While some days offer longer rides, the tour is structured to accommodate varying fitness levels, allowing participants to tailor their cycling experience. The support vehicle is ever-present, providing assistance and allowing those seeking a less strenuous ride to start from advantageous points (that avoid serious climbs). Please note that you can bring or rent an e-bike to aid your pedaling if you have little experience with steep sections. Riding an e-bike will make the adventure much less strenuous.

To prepare for this guided bike tour in Tasmania , consider incorporating a mix of cardiovascular exercises and strength training into your routine to enhance overall fitness. Aim for regular cycling sessions, gradually increasing the duration and intensity to simulate the conditions of the tour.

To fully enjoy this guided cycling adventure in Tasmania, you should have some cycling experience . That said, it is enough being a casual cyclist as the difficulty level can be customized to suit your experience and preferences. If you’re a total beginner, consider incorporating cycling to your weekly routine in the months prior to the adventure . We recommend cycling at least every weekend, covering between 10 and 20 miles (20-30 km) and increasing the distances and the intensity every week. You can also rent an e-bike and/or avoid the more strenuous sections during the adventure, which means that you won’t have to worry about the asents.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your bike or your e-bike and helmet (can be rented)
  • Necessary spares
  • Comfortable riding or athletic clothing, preferably moisture wicking or synthetic material
  • Sneakers or sport shoes
  • Breathable outside layer or jacket
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm jacket for the evening
  • Daypack large enough to bring all the items you may need during one day.
  • Biking gloves are optional but recommended
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Leisure clothes to wear when not riding

Vast majority of guests rent a bike, but you can bring your own if you want to. Keep in mind that your guides won’t be able to transport your bike from Hobart at the end of the tour. Helmets can be supplied also. Cycling water bottle is supplied by your guide and bikes come with panniers/saddle bags.

You will get a more detailed and comprehensive list of equipment and clothes you should bring once the trip is confirmed. The packing list will largely depend on the date you join the tour.

For the guided Tasmania bike tour, two types of bikes are offered for rental:

E-Assist Bike : Make your cycling experience effortlessly enjoyable with this E-Assist Bike. Designed for convenience, it allows you to climb hills with ease while still providing the exercise and outdoor fun of cycling. This bike rides like a regular one but comes equipped with an added battery store, offering pedal assistance precisely when you need it. Enjoy the journey with gears, brakes, and a spacious, comfortable seat.

Hybrid Bike : If you prefer a bike that combines road bike speed with city bike comfort, this Hybrid Bike is an excellent choice. Easy to ride and equipped with 24 gears, it ensures a smooth ride, even on challenging terrains. The comfortable upright position, water bottle holders, and rear racks make it a perfect companion for those wanting a bit more speed without sacrificing comfort.

Feel free to choose the bike that best suits your preferences and cycling style!

Group sizes and prices:

  • The maximum group size for this group tour is 10, with two guides (one of them driving the support vehicle.
  • It takes at least 4 participants for this tour to run. Your guide can accommodate smaller groups with a price adjustment.
  • The cost per person decreases as the group grows, so it’s the perfect opportunity to hike with friends and family!

Cycling in Tasmania can be arranged for private groups. Contact us prior to booking.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • Children as young as 10 are able to go on trips with a legal guardian. That said, if you have a young rider strong enough to handle sustained climbs (either riding or walking their bike) of hundreds of feet, and rough terrain, then they may be able to participate on a case-by-case basis.

If your group has riders under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to Launceston, the starting point of the tour, most people fly into Launceston Airport . From there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service. You will meet with a guide upon your arrival. They have transportation to your accommodation covered!

If flying from afar, we suggest arriving one day before and staying one day after the end of the tour. In this case, you’ll have to take a shuttle service to your accommodation from the airport. You can arrange one extra day before or after the adventure for an additional fee when booking.

We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more. Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to. For more information on travel recommendations and restrictions in Tasmania, Australia, please refer to Australia’s COVID-19 travel advice .

Deb's World

Midlife – travel, fun and adventure

Travel to Tasmania's north west coast

Tour de Tassie #6 – The white road through the Wilderness to Stanley

The silica road.

All good things come to an end….

Here is the final instalment in my Tour de Tassie series of travel blogs.

Tasmanian Devil sign

Moving on from West Coast to North West Coast

Strahan – zeehan – corinna – smithton – stanley.

After our 2 day stay in beautiful Strahan on the West Coast of Tasmania , we decided to head towards Stanley on the North West coast.  To do that we had a few choices of roads and we chose the road less travelled.  The white road through the wilderness.  It doesn’t even appear on the map I’ve included below!!

We must admit to being a bit underwhelmed with the town of Zeehan but we were pleased to visit the Spray Tunnel which was just out of town. The Spray Tunnel is a 100-metre long abandoned train tunnel that leads to what was the Spray Silver Mine. The tunnel was carved through the hill so that ore could be moved from the mine. The tunnel is unusually shaped like a keyhole, approximately 3 metres high and 2.2 metres wide and 100 metres long.  It’s a real relic of the West’s mining history. We also saw glow worms inside the tunnel as we walked through it – very cool!

After Zeehan, we took the road to Corinna which was mainly unsealed, scenic and a bit lonely, with very few cars travelling either way. There was no phone reception at all and it felt like we were in the middle of the wilderness at times – I’m not complaining, it was a great feeling!

The road around Corinna is sometimes called t he “silica road”, an all weather surface using the tailings from the nearby silica mine. The locals say that this beautiful white road on either side of Corinna provides a better driving experience than the sealed sections.

Pieman River Barge

Barge Crossing At Pieman River Tasmania

We knew from the signs that there was a ferry/barge crossing the Pieman River but until we landed at the river we didn’t know the fee of $25 per vehicle, luckily we had cash on us as I’m not sure if the barge took cards as a payment. We stopped at the edge of the river and my husband rang the Fatman barge phone (sounds like something from Get Smart). Apparently the barge ran at half hour intervals so we weren’t sure how long we would have to wait. In the meantime we saw a sign pointing to historical graves off to the side of the road and we headed over to have a look. Very interesting!

It wasn’t very long until we saw the barge heading over towards us and then we were loaded and on our way.  The young guy running the barge was interesting and gave us information about the road ahead.  He was from Byron Bay and knew someone in Tumbarumba – it’s a small world!  He didn’t have much longer to work the barge and was looking forward to moving on, although he enjoyed his work at Corinna immensely.

Corinna is a very small community which was once a remote historic mining town.  It’s now an eco-tourism area surrounded by rainforest and natural wilderness. It’s well known for its river cruises, boating, fishing and bird watching.

Corinna was once a thriving gold mining town and is now an oasis for nature lovers wanting a genuine wilderness experience. Stay in self-contained retreats, historic miners’ cottages, backpackers or camp sites and the local hotel serves up Tasmanian produce with a healthy dose of Tasmanian hospitality. Source

West Coast of Tasmania

We drove for approximately 2-3 hours without seeing anything except the vast and beautiful scenery of the Tarkine wilderness, and the odd vehicle.  It was a lovely drive and we eventually arrived at Smithton and our first stop was at a bakery for a late lunch as we were starving!

The Ark at Stanley

We knew Stanley was just a bit further on and decided to stop for the night there and finally getting some phone reception started looking for accommodation.  We were fortunate to find a delightful Bed and Breakfast called The Ark   with wonderful hosts Rhonda and Christer.

We settled into our Anderson Suite before heading out for a wander around this quaint little town which was featured in the movie ‘Light Between Oceans’.  In fact our B&B was a star in the movie with its prime position. I have to go back and re-watch the movie now!

The whole town was involved in the filming a few years ago and there were photo boards showing the town’s transformation throughout the village.  They are justifiably proud of their beautiful little village.

Antique shop in Stanley Tasmania

The historic village of Stanley is nestled at the base of the Nut, a sheer-sided bluff – all that remains of an ancient volcanic plug. It was once the headquarters of the Van Diemen’s Land (VDL) Company which was formed in 1824 during the reign of George IV.

The Nut at Stanley Tasmania

The Nut is a prominent  landmark and a formidable walk up and down, but well worth it for the views. In the summer season there is a chairlift which you can take, as seriously, it is an almost vertical track in places.  We of course walked up and down – here’s a few shots of the views from the top, (the chairlift had closed for the season the day before anyway).

The Nut at Stanley Tasmania had an almost vertical path

Highfield Historic House

Highfield House is an imposing Georgian house set on a magnificent site and was once the VDL Managers’ residence. It had fantastic views and we enjoyed our self guided tour throughout the site.

Highfield Historic Site in Stanley Tasmania

I think this quote from the tourist brochure says it all – Highfield may be made from brisks and mortar, but it means much more than that.  Highfield represents both the capacity of human endeavour towards both enterprise and disaster.  Curiously the house was built at a time when the Company was on the verge of ruin.  On this most spectacular site at the edge of the world, this is the story of either enterprise or folly, success or tragedy.  You decide!

Leaving Stanley: Wynyard – Burnie – Penguin – Devonport

Penguin statue at Penguin Tasmania with seagull on his head

After leaving Stanley, we made our way along the coast as much as we could, through the centres of Wynyard, Burnie and onto Devonport where we were to catch the boat the Spirit of Tasmania for our night sailing back to Melbourne.

We stopped at the popular beach-side town of Penguin along the way and had a delicious late lunch watching people take photos of the real Penguin of Penguin.  I featured the Penguin in my Not so Wordless Wednesday post on 21 June – and I told a funny (and true) story.

All in all, it was a great two week trip and we enjoyed every minute of it.  I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing a little about Tasmania through my posts and I’ve maybe whetted your appetite for a visit.  It’s  beautiful, historical and picturesque place for a holiday.

I could tell you so much more about these amazing places but you’ll just have to go and visit for yourself!

Grateful to be here,

Thanks for the sharing your experience.

Loved Tassie! Always lovely to read about it 🙂

Oh, that looks like a different world to me. Your photos are amazing, well they always are! I would so love to come over to the other side of the globe once if it just wasn’t such a long journey. I hate sitting on a plane for all these hours. Flying ‘home’ to see my mummy takes me 4 hours, plus all the time you lose with getting to and from the airports etc. I will follow your great posts, virtually traveling with Debbie 🙂

Thanks so much! Travel with me anytime….

So interesting. The tunnel sounds fascinating, though I’m highly claustrophobic & would probably have panicked!

Yrs it was interesting, although it wasn’t that long, I must admit to being a bit spooked when my husband turned his torch off.

Why do you think that Spray Tunnel was keyhole shaped? Was it to accommodate a piece of mining equipment? Love that you saw glow worms! So neat. And I’d have been there with you, going up and down that nut! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all.

I think you’re right about the shape, it was certainly very interesting to see it. Thanks for coming along on our travels.

I loved your photos and studying the maps! The Nut tugs at my heart, and Highfield is captivating, too! What a lovely journey! Some of the photos remind me of Whidbey Island in Washington State, US. I love your ease of description which carries us along on the journey with you!

I’m so glad you feel like you’ve been on the journey with me, it means I’ve managed to express what we experienced. It was a beautiful area and we were so fortunate with the weather. Thanks for your supportive and encouraging comment.

Added yet another thing to my bucket list—I’m going to have to travel full time in order to check everything off that list, but these pictures are just drawing me in.

I know, it gets a bit like that at times doesn’t it Jennifer? I’m glad the photos resonate with you.

Tasmania certainly looks a beautiful place and I’ve added it onto my increasingly long bucket list of places to visit. I love the wilderness & scenery – although I wish I was there myself, I have certainly enjoyed being an armchair traveller. 😊

So glad you get to visit by armchair if not in person Linda. You sound like me with an endless list of places to see.

This really looks amazing, Debbie!! I love that you took the road less traveled—-your adventurous spirit is so inspiring!

Well my husband and I are quite adventurous and we are making the most of these opportunities.

Loved being on this journey with you and your images are pretty evocative. Love to go, myself.

Much appreciated Carol, you are always welcome to come along!

Hi Deb, My father was from Burnie so this area was his stomping ground. My mother sister and I went to Tassie to explore where he had come from after he died. I loved Stanley and The Nut but didn’t realise you could walk up it.( or perhaps I’ve forgotten). My husband have been talking about a trip there to explore. There are still parts I haven’t been to and others I would like to revisit. Next trip you should check out Boat Harbour (nice beach) after Burnie heading towards Stanley. I need to watch The Light Between the Ocean, Read the book and knew they were filming it there.

Is that Highfield Historic building on top of the Nut?

My paternal grandfather died while constructing the bridge across the Pieman River. He went to pick up a tool and walked through the scaffolding. His head hit a rock in the river. So much for OH&S in those days. My father was 5 months old and there were four older children. I really should find out where the bridge is so we can go and look at it. I enjoyed reading your Tassie posts. Will refer to them for our next trip. Louise

Wow, that’s really interesting Louise. Highfield House is o the point opposite The Nut and has spectacular views towards The Nut and out to sea. Your grandfather’s death at Pieman River is a sad story! It’s a beautiful area down there and we hadn’t been that way before so it was all very interesting. Thanks for coming along for the ride with us and I hope you get to visit there again one day soon.

Thanks Deb yes I am hope so too.

Your wonderful post takes me back to Tassie when we toured in 2015. We never travelled on the White Road and we didn’t go to Smithton either. We spent a few nights in Stanley, which we found to be very charming. The wilderness areas of Tassie are mind-blowing and I would love to return to see some more. Thanks for taking me to a part of Tassie I haven’t explored.

Glad you enjoyed seeing it through my post Kathy! It’s a beautiful part of the world.

Love the photos! Thanks for sharing! 😀

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed your visit!

That steep concrete walkway, easier to go up than down 🙂 Tasmania is so beautiful. It looked like you had a fab time touring around the island. Good post Deb!

The pathway was sooooo steep and you’re tight going up is easier than going down. No wonder so many use the chairlift when it operates. Thanks for your comment, I love getting feedback.

I am very wary of places I walk as a few weeks ago I fell and hit my head, now they call me Black Eye Suz 🙂 My own fault for talking and not watching where I was going. Think it gave everyone a fright more than me!! All good now, no concussion etc thankfully!!

Oh dear, I hope you have recovered by now! Take care of yourself!

Thanks, Deb, yes I am okay. Just annoyed that I had the people we are housesitting worried as they were with us when I did it. The walkways are so uneven over here, need to pay more attention in future and less talk! Strangely our elderly fathers decided to have a fall too in the last few weeks!!! That’s life!!

I love ‘roads less traveled’!! Your photos are stunning. Your trip looks amazing!

Thanks Donna, it was a great trip. I considered not posting this final bit but I’m glad I did now.

Hi Deb, I was delighted to come across your blog today and your tour around Tassie. My husband’s family first arrived in Tassie as early as 1828 and that ancestor headed straight to Stanley working for the VDL Company. We spent three weeks in Tassie in January this year. It was intended to show our kids where Daddy came from, but we spent much of our time also retracing my husband’s father’s footsteps. He was born in Penguin and his Mum passed away when he was nine and then Geoff’s Dad died when my husband was 16. So, our trip to Tassie was quite emotional but resonated withb meaning. I still miss the food and our wonderful travels. We have friends spending a month down there at the moment and other friends who moved down. I wrote about Tasmania for my A-Z April Blogging Challenge this year. Here’s my post about Stanley: https://beyondtheflow.wordpress.com/2017/01/21/blown-away-by-stanley-tasmania-continued/ xx Rowena

The one corner of Tassie that we haven’t seen yet is Zeehan and Corinna, so thanks for sharing this part of your trip. They are both on our list now 🙂

Great to hear from you Ruth!! It’s a lovely part of the island and I’m sure you’d enjoy it.

Wow! What a gorgeous place! Beautiful pictures!

Thanks Phil! It certainly is an amazing place.

I was just there today – in Tassie – gorgeous day! It really is a beautiful place.

Really!! Lucky you, wet and freezing here today.

Date in eigen stad.

Justin our driver was fantastic, he had all the stories, history of the area, made us all welcome from the time he picked us up to the time he dropped us off. Every day was well planned and ran smoothly. The only issue was the accommodation at Hobart Travelodge, the room was very small and the bathroom no bigger than a cupboard - Will recommend Under Down Under to family and friends - Well done Under Down Under we had a fantastic time.

The BIG 3 Tasmania - Launceston to Hobart

Booking this trip was the greatest decision I could have made. I’m moving overseas and this was to be my last holiday with my sister and brother in law before I move. We had never travelled together before and were a little nervous about how to do it. We knew that we didn’t want to hire and car and when we saw this trip, it sounded perfect for us. Our driver/ guide in Launceston, Graeme, was super knowledgeable and really lovely. He made sure we got ample time to stop at the small rural towns between the big stops and was only too happy to accommodate any additional needs. Ben, our second driver, was so funny and a really friendly individual. If you’re into nature or just like looking at pretty things, this trip is for you. You don’t have to think or worry - just turn up to your pick up location on time and you will be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking scenery throughout the day. Tasmania has so much to offer and this trip, whilst fast, really ensures that you see the best of everything. I would wholeheartedly book this trip again. What people love about Hobart Tours

This tour was absolutely fantastic. We were able to squeeze in and see so much of Tasmania’s natural beauty! Our tour guide Hayden was amazing - cool, calm and knowledgeable! I was overjoyed when he helped us spot some platypus in their natural environment. Whilst on the bus itself he shared heaps of information and fun facts to keep us entertained. There is a lot of early starts - which is totally fair enough since it meant we could enjoy so much of what Tasmania has to offer. There is a lot of walking - but there are many choices of walks to do, so you can chose the level of difficulty in most places and all walks are optional. One of my favourite trips in Australia so far ?
Excellent Larry our guide took very good care of us. Did his best to ensure we all were ok and happy

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. Stage 1 — Saturday, June 29 Florence-Rimini Distance: 206km (128 miles) Profile: Medium mountain stage

Stage 1: A daunting opener

Last year’s first stage was said by some to be amongst the hardest Tour openers ever; one year later, the organizers have decided to follow the same template.

Indeed they have ramped up the difficulty, with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters, some 500 meters more than last time around. The stage will not so much shake off the cobwebs as evaporate them. Starting in Florence as part of the first-ever Italian Grand Depart in history, the riders will have 30 mainly flat kilometers before the first of seven categorized climbs rear up.

The Col de Valico Tre Faggi is the highest on the stage, peaking at 930 meters altitude after 12.5km of climbing. A breakaway is almost certain to form here and, passing over the subsequent climbs of the Côte des Forche, the Côte de Carnaio and the Colle de Barbotto, should be able to further pad their advantage.

The pendulum may well swing the other way over the three climbs located in the final 50 kms. The last of these, the Côte de Saint-Marino, is followed by 25 downhill and flat roads to the finish in Rimini. Much will depend on how the favorites ride the stage but if the big names and their teams go all in, a very difficult first day is in store.

The stage finish is a poignant location for Italian cycling. The 1998 Tour de France winner Marco Pantani died in Rimini in 2004, with this year’s Tour taking place 20 years after that tragic event.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “It’s rare for the Tour de France to start with more than 3,600 meters of climbing — in fact it’s never happened before! — and it’s also the first time that the race has visited the home city of Gino Bartali.

“The succession of hills in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are likely to be the setting for an immediate and testing confrontation between the contenders for the title, particularly the climb into San Marino (7.1km at 4.8 percent), where the race will add a 13th name to its catalogue of foreign visits.”

Ellen DeGeneres returned to the comedy stage Wednesday night for the first set of her “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour,” taking significant time to address controversy around her talk show that began with an internal investigation of poor working conditions on the show as reported in Buzzfeed .

Popular on Variety

Since the talk show’s conclusion, DeGeneres has kept a much lower profile. “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour” represents her biggest entry into the public eye after two years, with shows planned through the coming months.

“For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business. …Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old and gay,” DeGeneres told the crowd Wednesday night, referencing how her ’90s sitcom “Ellen” was cancelled after she publicly came out as gay. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

A representative for DeGeneres did not immediately respond for comment.

Ellen DeGeneres Jokes About Getting ‘Kicked Out of Show Business’ on New Tour After Talk Show Scandal

62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards – Backstage, Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres is still reeling from the end of her talk show — which was shrouded in scandal after toxic workplace allegations — but that doesn’t mean she can’t laugh at herself.

When DeGeneres, 66, kicked off her Ellen’s Last Stand … Up Tour on Wednesday, April 24, in West Hollywood, she wasn’t afraid to poke fun at her own career downfall .

“What else can I tell you?” she told the sold-out crowd during the show, according to Rolling Stone , before declaring, “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business.”

DeGeneres trolled herself, adding, “There’s no mean people in show business.”

The comedian teased that her iconic parting line on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , “Be kind to one another,” couldn’t save her from the controversy that engulfed the show in 2020 .

“The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” she continued. “I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f–k yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

DeGeneres made headlines in 2020 when she was accused of producing a “ toxic work environment ” during her 19-season run. WarnerMedia launched an investigation that July into the allegations and DeGeneres sent a letter of apology to her staff.

Although she continued to film throughout 2020, DeGeneres announced in 2021 that season 19 would be the last. Her final episode aired in May 2022.

The fallout over how the show concluded and the stain on her reputation is something DeGeneres hasn’t fully moved on from. In fact, she admitted on Wednesday that as she’s looked back she’s realized she was a boss who “didn’t know how to be a boss” despite being the face of the show.

“I didn’t go to business school. I went to Charlie’s Chuckle Hutt,” DeGeneres told the audience, referring to her comedy background. “The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said ‘Ellen’ and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said ‘Ellen,’ but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge.”

DeGeneres also joked that the talk show drama wasn’t the first time Hollywood pushed her out. In the 1990s, she made waves by announcing on her sitcom, Ellen , that she was gay . The revelation didn’t sit well with the network.

“For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business,” she said, sarcastically adding, “Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

While DeGeneres had the audience in stitches according to Rolling Stone , much of her set was about the heartbreak of losing The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

“I’m giving stuff away … and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said of her downfall. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

During an encore, DeGeneres took questions from the audience and opened up even more about her long road back into the spotlight after the talk show drama.

“Honestly, I’m making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating, really,” she confessed. “I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way.”

Ellen’s Last Stand … Up Tour continues throughout July along the West Coast, including dates in Washington, Oregon and California.
