If you’re touring the UK and are based in London, then you simply cannot miss Stonehenge off your itinerary. This ancient site is thought to date back to prehistoric times, though scientists can only guess exactly when and how the standing bluestones were placed on Salisbury Plain.

Stonehenge is an iconic British site and even features in a key work by one of the UK’s most famous writers – Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The place is shrouded in mystery, legends and of course myths, and this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an incredible spectacle to behold.

Taking a trip to Stonehenge from London by train means catching a train at London Waterloo station. There are over 35 trains per day and the journey time is about one hour and 25 minutes each way. Some services are direct. 

You can also depart from Clapham Junction if that’s more convenient. Remember you’ll also need to travel from your hotel to one of those stations. London Waterloo is on the Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee and Waterloo and City lines, and lies just south of the River Thames. Clapham Junction is further down the main line. 

Once you reach Salisbury you’ll have to make another journey to get to Stonehenge, as it’s around ten miles away from there. You can choose between catching a tour bus operated by a private company or taking a taxi. The former takes about 25 minutes and the latter about 15 minutes. 

While it’s possible to visit Stonehenge from London by train, you can’t get there without involving an additional taxi or bus journey, and it’s difficult to predict exactly what a cab will cost unless you don’t mind phoning in advance to ask.

You could also arrange your own Stonehenge to London tour by bus. National Express coaches operate from Victoria Coach Station in London, which is about 300 metres from the tube station. That is on the Circle, District and Victoria lines. 

This is the most time-consuming way to get from L (London) to S (Stonehenge). In fact the trip again takes you to Salisbury, from where you’ll again need to catch a tour bus or taxi to reach Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. The drive will take about 15 or 25 minutes once you’re in the cab or on board the bus. 

Tickets for National Express coaches are usually cheap, but really that’s the only factor in their favour. The journey time from Victoria to Salisbury is at least 3 hours and 15 minutes, and then you have another trip to make by taxi or local tour bus.

At a distance of around 85 miles each way, travel to Stonehenge from London by car can be quicker than public transport. The outward and return trip should take around one-and-a-half hours each, subject to traffic conditions (and finding your way without getting lost)! 

There is a car park at Stonehenge. This is operated by English Heritage , and they may ask you to pay for parking if you are a non-member who hasn’t pre-booked a ticket. Once you pay for entry, this charge should be refunded. If you’ll have trouble walking from the car park to the stones, a visitor shuttle bus is provided. 

Don’t forget that you’ll need to budget for petrol and the cost of car rental if you plan to drive to Stonehenge from London and don’t have access to a vehicle already. Parking in London can also be a big problem – and very expensive even where it is available. Central London also has a congestion charge. 

Getting out of and back into London can also be tricky for those unfamiliar with the city, and traffic levels around the outskirts tend to be notoriously high.

Thanks to its size – you could literally fit it into the United States around 70 times – England is an easy country to tour. And for those planning to spend much of their time in the nation's capital, this is especially good news. England is crisscrossed by an excellent network of roads and rails, most of which either start in London or pass by close enough to make them handy for travelers.

Take Stonehenge as an example. One of England's top places to visit , Stonehenge can easily be reached by car, guided tours, or a combination of rail and bus transportation options. Best of all, the journey itself can offer many more great sightseeing opportunities, especially if you choose to have a tour company do the driving.

1. From London to Stonehenge by Tour

For those wanting to see multiple attractions while in England, an organized day trip from London to Stonehenge via Windsor Castle and including Bath is a great option. This superb day-long excursion lasts approximately 11 hours and manages to allow you to tick off three of the country's most popular tourist destinations in one go (albeit a long one!).

After an early 8am departure from the Victoria Coach Station in Belgravia, London, you'll kick things off with a visit to majestic Windsor Castle. Famous as the world's oldest castle still in use by royalty, much of it can be toured when there's no one home (check whether the flag is flying; it is when the Queen's home).

There's certainly much to see and do in Windsor Castle , so the hour and 15 minutes you get to spend here is pretty crammed. Rest assured, though, your professional guide will ensure you get to see the best bits while you're here. Highlights include famous St. George's Chapel (where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle), a tour of the State Apartments, as well as catching the colorful Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Next stop is the beautiful city of Bath in Somerset. You know you've arrived when you drive past famous Pulteney Bridge (so have your cameras ready). The drive is around two hours each way.

With two hours to explore at your own pace, you'll have plenty of time to truly get to know this amazing landmark. To help, a handy audio-guide is provided With your admission, and you can add to the experience by enjoying the many interactive exhibits and artifacts on display at the visitor center.

In addition to your transportation, admission is included with the cost of the trip. There's also an option to add a basic one course meal to your adventure, or you can opt to pick something up for yourself in the on-site restaurant.

3. From London to Stonehenge by Train and Bus

While there are no direct trains from London to Stonehenge - it's located in the middle of Salisbury Plain - rail travel is certainly something to consider, especially if you've got time on your hands.

The best option is to hop aboard the South Western Railway service to Salisbury at London Waterloo station. Trains depart regularly (there are usually two or three an hour), and the journey takes between 1.5 to 2 hours . The cheapest fares kick in after the morning rush hour, while savings can be enjoyed by travelers with advance purchase of a BritRail Pass , which can be acquired online.

While a bus from London to Salisbury can be cheaper, it can take longer than the train (up to three hours) and offers fewer departures. Buses leave from London's Victoria Coach Station as early as 6am.

However you get here, once in Salisbury, you'll need to have made plans to either rent a car and drive the 20 minutes to Stonehenge, grab an Uber or taxi, or take a bus. Cyclists may want to look into renting a bike, as you could even cycle to it in around an hour.

Fortunately for travelers, a company called Salisbury Red offers a convenient hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus service that connects directly from Salisbury city center to Stonehenge (admission included). An option to stop at the ruins of Old Sarum is available.

4. From London to Stonehenge by Car

While some may enjoy driving from London to Stonehenge, it's important to remember a few key things. First, the Brits do drive on the opposite side of the road to most other countries, something that can be a little disorienting if you aren't used to it.

Their cars are also right-hand drive, meaning there's a bit of a learning curve for those traveling from places like the US, Canada, and Europe. Add to this the heavy traffic in London, plus congestion taxes, and you may want to make use of the various options mentioned above.

That said, if you're planning on taking a couple or more days, you can certainly make the most of the opportunity to explore the English countryside. And there are no end of lovely spots to visit along the way, from the beautiful Cotswolds to the charming city of Winchester . That said, journey times may be a little shorter if you pick up a car upon arrival at Heathrow Airport, so you may wish to collect a car and hit the road upon your arrival in England.

For those heading straight to Stonehenge from central London - a distance of around 88 miles - expect the journey to take between 2 to 2.5 hours , depending on traffic. From London, you'll head due west along the usually busy M3, before taking the A303 and eventually the A360 direct to Stonehenge. While parking at Stonehenge is free for those with tickets, it can be busy, especially in peak season.

An alternative that will avoid the usually heavy traffic along the approaching roads to Stonehenge is to park in Salisbury and grab the shuttle bus service mentioned in #3 above. Five park-and-stay options are available, all convenient to the city center and the shuttle bus. An added advantage is that you can also spend time exploring popular Salisbury attractions , including its magnificent cathedral.

Our first pick up is on the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, SE1 7PB. This is the bus pick up and drop off point for the London Eye (see departure point page here) This is in the Waterloo area and a short walk from both Waterloo and Westminster Stations. Your bus and guide will normally arrive 5-10 minutes before departure. Look out for a small white Mercedes Benz bus with “The English Bus” written on the side. A prompt departure is essential so please arrive in plenty of time.

Take exit 1 from the main railway station and turn right. Please be waiting outside the hotel, we will stop to pick you up as close to the hotel entrance as we can.

Meandering along some scenic tree and hedgerow lined back routes beyond Bath, we arrive in the stunning village of Castle Combe. Before our arrival, your guide will tell you all about the village and what there is to see and do, before we drop of off to explore on foot. Wander down the charming main street admiring the Cotswolds beauty, perhaps stop for a cup of tea and a scone, or a drink in one of the historic pubs. Visit Castle Combe's 13th century church and get some beautiful pictures of one of England's most beautiful villages.

Dependent on traffic, we’ll get back to London between approximately 8.00pm - 8.30pm. Your guide will plan the route into London based on where you all want to go, and will endeavour to get you as close as possible to your destination. If there is a more convenient point to depart the tour along our route through London then we can certainly make a stop for you. We will also always return to the areas you started the tour, if this is your best option. Evan Evans vs Premium Tours

I'm planning a week trip to London with a couple of people & want to take one all day trip to Bath, Stonehenge, & Windsor using a tour operator. I've taken a Evan Evans tour 4 years, which they were OK, but want to see if there's a better tour operator out there. The other one I see is Premium Tours. Please sound off on what your experiences were for those who have both Evan Evans & Premium Tours.

Golden Tour Company is a very good tour company to take tours with. http://www.goldentours.co.uk/ We have gone on several of their tours and really enjoyed them.

Debbie my daughter & I did a Evan Evans tour to Canterbury, Leeds Castle & Dover some years back. Enjoyed the trip just not long enough at each destination. Going to London in May w/5 other ladies & we are taking a tour to Bath, Stonhenge & Castle Combe w/Astral tours. On TripAdvisor, Astral gets good reviews & they use smaller vehicles (no morer than 16 & usually 12-14 passengers). That is one of the reasons i chose them but when you factor in the time it takes to reach your destination & the return trip that is why you usually don't have as much time as you would like to visit each sight. I have taken the Premium tour to Bath, Stonehenge, Windsor and Averbury, it was a great day trip, and a nice lunch pub was included. One thing to remember is that if you order the lasagna lunch, it is quite tiny, order a sandwich platter instead for a larger and more satisfying portion. The tour guide is very friendly, and the drive out of London is quite lovely. The your is well priced, with smaller groups too, so it is more intimate.

In the past we have used Evans Evans, Frames Rickards and Golden Tours. All about equal. Golden seems to push the shopping a bit more. I'd rank Frams 1, Evans 2 and Golden 3.

Thanks to all the feedback so far on this. I also see Astral Travel which has tour groups of max 16 persons. Does anyone have experiences with them in addition to Evan Evans and Premium Tours?

I wouldn't say that Golden pushes shopping more, but they do give you some free time to do with as you wish.

My family and I are going on a tour in June with CIE tours. I did a lot of internet searches for comments about them and to my understanding they are one of the best. Also - I would love to do a Rick Steves tour.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour began with a bang in Stockholm and it hasn't slowed down since. The highly-anticipated show has featured inventive set design, a decades-spanning setlist, and a plethora of standout style moments—from to archival pieces to custom looks and nearly everything in between. The star’s wardrobe has combined her signature style with the visual ethos of the album Renaissance ( think lots of sequins, silver, catsuits, and the occasional bee-inspired look). Beyoncé has also been wearing looks from brands specific to the city she’s performing in—for the UK leg of her tour she wore picks from the London-based Mary Katrantzou and Robert Wun while in Marseille, France she opted for a look by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus.

The singer has donned looks from both established brands—Valentino, Mugler, lots of Alexander McQueen, among others—as well as smaller labels like Anrealage and Brandon Blackwood. Balmain catsuits and mini dresses have been a constant throughout her tour wardrobe (in March, she partnered with creative director Olivier Rousteing to design a Renaissance couture line for the brand ) as well as imaginative pieces from Loewe. Beyoncé began the tour in Europe which has seen her in London, Paris, and other cities with the last being Warsaw, Poland on June 28th. She will then head to North America with her last date coming in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 27th. Beyoncé certainly made a splash for her final Renaissance show in Kansas City, Missouri. To open the concert, the star wore a custom Balenciaga gown, embroidered with over 8000 crystal rhinestones, and black opera gloves.

The star also brought out a black, latex version of a previous Ivy Park bodysuit and cropped jacket for her final show.

It’s fitting that perhaps the most memorable look from Beyoncé’s tour, a crystalized Loewe bodysuit, came in not one, not two, but three color ways.

Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed creative director of menswear, Pharrell Williams, designed this glittering catsuit for Beyoncé’s Detroit, Michigan concert. The two have quite the history as long time friends and collaborators—Williams has produced songs for Beyoncé in the past and she recently attended his debut runway show for the French brand earlier this year. The custom bodysuit put a spin on the brand’s famed Damier check through glittering crystal embroidery. Williams also created custom ensembles for Blue Ivy and Beyoncé’s backup dancers.

Beyoncé looked like liquid gold in this hooded mesh gown from Ivy Park. The piece featured slight ruching at the waist and a dramatic side slit which showed off her daring footwear choice—a pair of Alaïa cabaret heels. The patent calfskin choice are from the brand’s spring/summer 2023 collection in which the heel is designed to mimick the shape of two legs.

This silver cut-out number may just be Beyoncé’s most disco-ready jumpsuit yet. Custom designed by Lanvin, the piece featured the brand’s signature gold hardware as well as ruching throughout. To round things out, Beyoncé accessorized the look with equally as flashy opera gloves and above-the-knee boots.

Beyoncé traded her tour wardrobe of silver and gold for some Tiffany blue while in Chicago, Illinois. The look was created in partnership with designer Giles Deacon and featured a sculptural bodice and sheer organza gloves. She paired the dress with, of course, a custom Tiffany & Co. Beyoncé’s Acne Studios ensemble may have nailed the Barbie pink look, but it certainly did not disappoint during her Minneapolis show. She paired her reflective mini shorts and bustier with an oversized jacket and sparkling thigh-high boots.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance wardrobe isn’t just limited to bodysuits—she’s also been incorporating dramatic ensembles like this custom Schiaparelli mini dress and shawl. The strapless piece featured white feathered detailing which she paired with simple Dolce & Gabbana heels.

Balmain has been a focal point of Beyoncé’s Renaissance wardrobe and things got taken up a notch during her stop in Minneapolis. The singer opted for a sculptural latex bodysuit that she accessorized with knee-high boots, shield sunglasses, and a brimmed top hat.

And to round things out, the piece’s boots and gloves were connected to the main portion of the ensemble.

During her Nashville concert, the singer wore a custom bodysuit, gloves, and boots complete with crystal embroidery. She stopped it off with a UFO-shaped chapeau appropriate for an alien superstar. The outfit seemed to be a shorter version of a look she wore earlier on in the tour.

The singer opted for another dazzling custom look from David Koma. Unlike her previous printed mini dress from the British designer, this red number had plenty of sequins throughout as well as an asymmetrical train detail. She rounded things out with patent leather boots, a ruby belt, and pendant necklace.

The McQueen look wasn’t the only repurposed silhouette Beyoncé wore in Nashville. She opted for a pink Ivy Park jacket, halter top, and shorts that are, again, a shorter iteration of a similar bodysuit she previously wore in Europe. Beyoncé certainly leaned into some drama (and disco) with this custom Valentino look in Philadelphia. The focal point was the seemingly never-ending sequined train that connected to the pouf bodice of the bodysuit. She paired the flashy piece with coordinating boots, and towards the end of the show, she flew above the crowd in this look while mounted on a horse.

The singer mixed in some more sequins in Philadelphia with this custom Givenchy mini dress. The piece featured intricately placed cut-outs as well as fringe throughout the dress. She rounded things out with strappy heels and sheer black opera gloves. She, of course, also had on diamonds from Tiffany & Co. in the form of a ring, drop earrings, and a tennis bracelet.

Beyoncé went with another camouflage look from her label Ivy Park, this one a two-piece set. The crop top had built in sleeve-gloves and the mini shorts also featured chaps-like detailing that extended into her boots.

The singer donned a dazzling bespoke mini dress from the brand complete with layers of chains and stones. The mesh look of the piece was inspired by the designs of Elsa Peretti and took nearly 200 hours to make. Beyoncé paired the piece with custom Malone Souliers heels as well as vintage earrings and an anklet both from Tiffany & Co.

Also while in Toronto, the singer traded her layered mini dress for a dazzling custom Fendi gown. The piece is a riff on a similar look from the brand’s spring/summer 2021 couture collection and features a daring slit as well as crystal embroidery meant to imitate the appearance of honeycombs. For the final stop of the European leg, Beyoncé went with a slew of sequined and silver ensembles while performing in Warsaw, Poland. While Beyoncé has had some pretty avant-garde outfits, this Richard Quinn number may be her most “Alien Superstar” yet. The look featured legging-style pants with large crystal embellishments as well as a peplum-inspired top finished with similar adornments. Just one night after sporting a similar hooded piece while in Paris, Beyoncé went with another veiled look, this time, for her concert in Hamburg, Germany. The ensemble is designed by Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon and features a plunging bodysuit, sheer red tights, and a silk hood that connects at the head and arms. Of course, the singer also had on her signature opera gloves and glitzy earrings to round out the look.

Ferragamo’s creative director Maximillian Davis designed this red glittering gown for the singer’s show in Amsterdam. In honor of Juneteenth, Davis was one of several Black designers that Beyoncé wore throughout the show.

This is the second all-red Off-White look worn by Beyoncé during her tour. Her second version, however, featured a shortened silhouette and an accompanying top hat that was designed by the brand’s art and image director Ibrahim Kamara.

For her second Balmain look in Amsterdam, Beyoncé went with another iteration of the bee-inspired catsuits we’ve seen repeatedly on her tour thus far. This time, she paired the ensemble with a coordinating top hat rather than her infamous insect-like antena.

New York designer LaQuan Smith crafted this silver, shattered glass bodysuit for the singer’s Amsterdam stop. She paired the plunging piece with an equally as disco-worthy cape and heels.

London-based brand Feben outfitted Beyoncé in a color-blocked catsuit. “Thank you for inviting me into your world,” the designer wrote on Instagram . “What an incredible moment to be a part of, and a pivotal one for myself, and my inner child. It means the world to be supported and seen as a Black female designer in the industry.”

This deep silver mini dress was the second look from Ferragamo the singer wore in Amsterdam. The look featured ruched detailing that drifted into a train and above-knee boots.

While Beyoncé has, seemingly, unlimited access to a never-ending roster of designers, she went with her own label Ivy Park for this pink look in Amsterdam—and rightly so. Designed by the star herself, the piece featured daring slits, opera-style gloves, and a halter neckline.

“I started designing this collection over a year ago,” she said on Instagram . “I was so engulfed in all things Renaissance and was inspired by Studio 54, Bob Mackie, and the disco era.”

Yes, you can always count on Beyoncé to wear a form-fitting catsuit. But this one by Lebanese designer had a handful of eye-catching details. The bodice was composed of various strands of rhinestones and crystals and the sheer portion wrapped entirely around her body (even down to her boots).

French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus is from Marseille, France so it’s fitting that he outfitted the singer for her tour stop there. Jacquemus, who attended the concert, designed a form-ftting mini dress, boots, and gloves that featured disco ball-esque paillettes.

“[Beyoncé] is the first singer I saw live in Marseille 15 years ago,” he wrote on Instagram . “I’m so happy and proud. What a night in Provence, means a lot.”
