Alwar is the first major city that comes while travelling from Delhi to Rajasthan and is uniquely located at 150 km south of Delhi and 150 km north of Jaipur. • In 1106 Vikrami Samvat (1049 CE), the King of Amer founded the city of Alpur under his own name, which eventually became Alwar.
• Different Rajput sub-clans henceforth ruled this place from time to time, examples of which include Khanzada Rajputs, Nikumbh Rajputs, Badgujar Rajputs and finally Naruka Rajputs.
• A Rajput, Pratap Singh took over the possession of the Alwar fort from Jat Raja of Bharatpur on an agreement and laid the foundation of the modern Alwar, which became a princely state during colonialism.
• On 18th March 1948, the state merged with 3 neighbouring princely states- Bharatpur, Dholpur and Karauli.
• On 15th May, Alwar was added to neighbouring princely states and the territory of Ajmer to form modern-day Rajasthan. It was also designated as a part of the National Capital Region, thus initiating rapid development.

Alwar is situated between small hills of the Aravali range and has great historical importance. It was founded in 1049 by Maharaja Alaghraj. A Rajput state for a long time, Alwar eventually fell into the hands of Delhi Sultans in the early 13th century. Marathas and Jats of Bharatpur also ruled this region for a very short period. Siliserh Lake Palace

Alwar is one of the oldest cities in Rajasthan. Paradoxically, the city is also the most recent of the Rajput kingdoms. Its traditions can be traced back to the realms of Viratnagar that flourished here around 1500 BC. Also known as Matasya Desh, this is where the Pandavas, the mighty heroes of the Mahabharata, spent the last years of their 13-year exile. The journey of the city of Alwar and its origins can be traced back to 1500 BC. Nestled in the lap of the green hills of the Aravalli range, it is home to beautiful palaces and forts from an era long gone. The deep valleys and thick forest cover of the hills are a haven for many species of birds such as grey partridge and white-throated kingfisher and animals, most notably, the Bengal tiger and golden jackal. It is this splendour and exquisite architecture, along with the calm lakes, royal hunting chalets, dense jungles and a socio-cultural environment unlike any other that makes Alwar a traveller’s delight.

The Bala Qila (young fort) was built on the foundations of a 10th century mud fort and is a towering structure set atop a hill. Strong fortifications, graceful marble columns and delicate latticed balconies make up the fort. Bala Qila can be entered through six gates, namely Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishan Pol and Andheri Gate. It is presently accessible by road through Pratap Bandh forest entry leading to Jaipol. Bala quila buffer forest safari is available to the visitors. Fort entry timing 8 am to 3.30 pm. Safari timing: 6 am to 4.30 pm. (Wednesday closed)

ALWAR CITY PALACE

Built in 1793 AD by Raja Bakhtawar Singh, the City Palace is an amazing mélange of the Rajputana and Islamic styles of architecture. The highlight of this palace are graceful marble pavilions set on lotus flower bases in the central courtyard. The palace that once belonged to the Maharaja has been converted into the District Collectorate. Its grand halls and chambers now house government offices.

GOVT. MUSEUM

The Government Museum is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in the opulent life and lifestyle led by the Maharajas of Alwar. Rare manuscripts, including one depicting Emperor Babur’s life, Ragamala paintings and miniatures and extensive display of armory are exhibited in three large halls. MOOSI MAHARANI ki CHHATRI

This cenotaph, built in the memory of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh and his queen, Rani Moosi, reflects the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The upper portion comprising columned pavilions and domed arches is made of marble while the lower section consists of pillars in red sandstone. Mythological and court scene painting and sculptures adorn the ceiling. An artificial lake Sagar is situated nearby, it has distinct pattern of stairs and towers in perfect symmetry.

FATEH JUNG GUMBAD

This spectacular tomb, which is a combination of domes and minarets is an artistic marvel. Constructed on a perfect square platform, its massive dome can be seen from afar and is an example of mediaeval architecture. It is dedicated to Fateh Jung who was a kind-hearted minister of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan.

PURJAN VIHAR

One has Maharaja Sheodan Singh to thank for this attractive garden that was conceptualised and constructed in 1868. A picturesque place, locally known as Simla (the Summer House) was added to this garden to provide respite from the blazing sun.

Fifty kilometres from Sariska Sanctuary is the splendid town of Bhangarh which was built in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh. The most popular legend states that the town was cursed by an evil magician and was subsequently abandoned. The evil effect of the curse is believed to be working even to this day. GARBHAJI WATER FALLS

Garbhaji Falls is a popular destination for foreign and local tourists. The breathtaking sight of the water cascading off the rocks is the best feature of the place. Ideal for photographers and nature lovers, it is also popular with people who love to explore a city beyond its man-made structures.

A trail through the Sariska Sanctuary gate leads to this temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. At the Pandu Pol or Pandu gate, gushes a spring that appears to magically cascade down from the hard and compact rocks. Legend has it that the Pandava brothers took refuge here during their exile. Entry is only allowed on Tuesday, Saturday & full moon day of the month.

This artificial dam was constructed in 1910 by Maharaja Jai Singh. The banks of water body houses shaded pavilions and lovely towers. It is an excellent excursion spot, especially when the entire landscape turns lush green during the monsoon.(Photo courtesy: Resh Pooran).

SILISERH LAKE

Located 15 kilometres to the southwest of Alwar, this tranquil lake is nestled amidst forested hills and wooded hills. In 1845, Maharaja Vinay Singh constructed a hunting palace here for his Queen, Shila. It has been converted into RTDC hotel. Visitors can enjoy boating in the lake. Winter water birds and sun bathing crocodiles is a visual retreat during winter season at Siliserh.

SARISKA TIGER RESERVE

Sariska Tiger Reserve, the first tiger reserve in the world to have successfully relocated tigers, is just 200 kilometres from Delhi and 107 kilometres from Jaipur. TIJARA JAIN TEMPLE

About 60 kilometres from the Alwar-Delhi route lies this important centre of Jain pilgrimage. The exquisitely decorated ancient temple was built to commemorate the eighth Tirthankar, Shri Chandra Prabha Bhagwan. The son of King Mahasen and Queen Sulakshana, he ruled his kingdom for several years before receiving Diksha and being initiated. MOTI DOONGRI

Moti Doongri was originally built in the year 1882. Till the year 1928, it was the main residence of the royal family of Alwar. After 1928, Maharaja Jai Singh decided to demolish the old palace and later built a more magnificent one in its place. Presently it has beautiful garden and view points for the city.

The Sariska-Alwar road leads to this enchanting site where pilgrims bathe in hot sulphur springs. Tinkling scattered temple bells and strolling langurs lend it a unique ambience. It is famous as the place where Mandav Rishi sought penance.

BHARTRIHARI TEMPLE

Bhartrihari Temple is a vibrant pilgrimage centre attracting people from across the country. It revolves around the legend of King Bhartrihari who is said to have spent the last years of his life in this ancient place amidst the hills.

NARAINI MATA

Located 80 kilometres southwest of Alwar, this picturesque spot houses hot springs and is also known for a temple dedicated to Naraini Mata. The yearly fair held here on the occasion of Baisakh Sudi is attended by people of all walks of society.

Located deep inside the Sariska Tiger Reserve and in the middle of the rugged Aravalli range, Neelkanth literally needs to be found. The way to the temple has rough roads, steep turns and minimal signs of human existence, and all that adds to the mystique surrounding it. A stunning example of the century old, northern architecture and Khajurao-like carvings, the temple will leave you speechless and surprised by its unexpected offerings. It is actually a cluster of temples and open worship places, a good 30 Kilometers into a buffer zone of the tiger reserve, which is exemplified by intricate stone carvings and burgeoning views of the lush forest across the temple landscape. There’s more to the venue than the main Shiv temple. There are two smaller structures behind the temple and when walking up to them, you might bump into some pretty birds, especially peacocks. Interestingly, just about 100 meters from the temple stands an oversized, monolithic stone statue of the Jain Tirthankar Shantinath; to discover it, you will need a little guidance from the locals. Located 24 kilometres south of Alwar, this shrine is situated amidst rocky hills. The old Shiva temple has two natural ponds which receive water from the surrounding hills. Picturesque and peaceful, this place is especially worth visiting during monsoon.

NEEMRANA BAORI

Located in Neemrana, the Neemrana Baori is not very far from the fort palace. The first sight itself hints at how glorious the place must have been in the past. A marvel of architecture, Neemrana Baori looks more like a fortress than a step well. With each floor having a height of about 20 feet, and with 9 floors making up the entire structure, you can imagine how deep it runs. There are no carvings in the structure, maybe because it was built rather later in time, after the more architectural times of earlier centuries. However, the structure still shows all signs of being a glorious building. At the ground level, there used to be colonnaded openings later they had to descend steps to reach the deep water source. The lower steps or floors were of course under water most of the time. In its essence, the Neemrana Baori is a glimpse into the architectural nuances of the past, gazing upon which you shall be thoroughly amazed!

Lal Masjid, Tijara

The mosque situated to the east of Tijara Town is popularly known as Lal Masjid. It is approximately 55 km from Alwar city. The red sandstone structure is rectangular with minars at four corners and arched doorways. The three arched doorways open into a hall which used to have three domes. The southern dome, however, has fallen. Faint Arabic inscriptions are painted at places on the plastered surface in the northern part of the hall. Entry timing: Sunrise to Sunset

Raja Bhartrihari Panorama Alwar

Raja Bharthrihari ji were ruler of Malwa region and later in his life left his kingdom in search of spirituality. He traveled extensively around the forests of Alwar- Viratnagar. The interesting story of the royalty doing penance as a disciple of Guru Gorakh Nath and then settling in the public mind comes to life in this panorama. Panorama Bhawan is itself an attractive architectural building. A visit to Alwar cannot be completed without seeing this panorama. Veer Hasan Khan Mewati Panorama

Hasan Khan Mewati was great warrior and patriot of Alwar region. He is also known as Shah- a-Mewat. Hasan Khan fought along with Maharana Sanga in the Battle of Khanwa against Mughal ruler Babur. The panorama dedicated to this great personality depicts the life story and great events of medieval India. Panorama also houses a life size statue of Hasan Khan and the building is designed artistically. Entry timing: 10.00 am to 05.00 pm

SARISKA WILDLIFE SAFARI

Visiting Sariska Tiger Reserve is a must when at Alwar. Although larger than Ranthambhore, it is less commercialised and contains lesser tigers. The landscape of Sariska consists of hills and valleys, and the topography supports arid forests, dry deciduous forests, rocks and grasses. There is a broad range of wildlife found here and the reserve is a wonderful example of ecological adoption and tolerance. Besides the natural attractions, Sariska has ruins of elaborate pavilions and temples that hint at past riches and glory. One must also, if possible, visit the highly-inaccessible Kankwadi Fort known for its long and turbulent history and Maharaja Jai Singh's hunting lodge, now a heritage hotel.

BOATING ON SILLSERH LAKE

The tranquil waters of Sillserh Lake are perfect for boating. Surrounded by thick forest and with magnificent cenotaphs on its embankment, it makes for a pleasant and memorable boat ride. One can choose between a motor boat and a paddle boat, any time between sunrise to sunset.

TRAVERSE THROUGH THE GREEN SIDE OF RAJASTHAN

Jungle Safari

Sariska Tiger Rreserve (STR) is nestled in the quaint surroundings of the hills of the Aravallis. This thickly-wooded area throbs with wildlife. It is a marvel of ecological adaptation and endurance. It is not only a delight for wildlife lovers, but also for the enthusiast of heritage and archaeology. The total area of the Tiger Reserve is 1203 kms, of which 881 kms is notified as core area. The tiger Reserve features dry, open deciduous forests sprawling over a vast tract of hills and valleys, with lovely springs cascading through them. It has numerous valuable sites of geological and historical interest and above all, a rich, varied and exotic fauna consisting of the tiger, leopard, hyena, jungle cat, sambar, chital, nilgai, chausingha, jackal, wild boar, wild dog, langurs and rhesus monkeys. Alwar is a city of 460,000 people (2018) in the Rajasthan state of western India . Alwar is surrounded by the Aravali Hills and has a unique recognition because of Sariska Van Abhyaranya, Bala-Quila and Silished.

It was the capital of the princely state of Alwar or Ulwar in British India. The city is around 160 km south of Delhi , and around 150 km north of Jaipur .

Alwar is one of the oldest kingdoms in Rajasthan. A mythological belief persists that this region was known as Matsya Desh where the Pandavas spent their 13th year of exile. It was founded in 1049 by Maharaja Alaghraj and was a part of Virat Nagar in 1500 BC. Later, Alwar was ruled by several Rajput lineages - Nikumbh Rajputs, Yaduvanshi Rajputs, Badgujar Rajputs and Naruka. Even the Marathas and Jats of Bharatpur have ruled the region, though for a very short period. Foundation of modern Alwar was laid down by Rao Partap Singh, a brave Rajput soldier who conquered the Alwar Fort. On March 1948, the state merged with three princely states - Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli, and formed the Matsya Union. Alwar does not have an airport. The closest airports to the city are Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi, which is 142 km away, and Jaipur International Airport (JAI) in Jaipur, which is 163 km from Alwar city.

Bala Quila: The history of Bala Quila dates back to 1550 AD, making it the oldest fort and the most sought after destination in Alwar. However, the name of this structure suggests otherwise as the meaning of its name is a young fort. It depicts the magnificent glory of Alwar over the years. Standing tall and strong, the fort covers a distance of 5 km and is one of the best places to visit in Alwar.

City Palace: The marvel of City Palace is situated below the Bala Quila. It was established in the year 1873. Its architecture depicts Rajput and Mughal influence. At present times, part of it is used as government offices and the other part as a museum. A visit to the museum is highly recommended since it has a plethora of important artifacts, making it one of the best Alwar attractions. It has fifteen main towers. Alwar government museum and city palace (history of city, tips, travel guide).

Roughly midway between Jaipur and Delhi, two of the most visited cities in India, lies Alwar in Rajasthan. Its forts are not as grand as Amer Fort in Jaipur and its monuments aren’t lovingly restored like Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi. Yet it has a rich heritage and a long history. Alwar was one of Rajasthan’s oldest kingdoms and Bala Quila one of the state’s oldest forts. Now that says something in this land of abundant forts, palaces, and havelis.

Bala Quila (fort) in Alwar sits atop a 300 metre cliff. With 66 towers and 8 bastions, it extends 5 kms from North to South and 1.6 kms from East to West

Nestled between folds of the Aravalli Hills, Alwar has been governed by both Hindu and Muslim rulers. Hemchandra Vikramaditya or Hemu, the only Hindu king to occupy the throne in Delhi for a short while after Mughal forces had overrun medieval India, was born here.

Under the British, it had special status as a princely state of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty. Kings were permitted to retain their titles and collect taxes from subjects, amassing a great deal of wealth. One of the rulers of Alwar, Maharaja Jai Singh, is believed to have once used Rolls Royce cars to collect city garbage. It was payback for insulting him and not recognizing his standing when he, minus royal trappings, visited the company’s showroom in London

Today Alwar is a modern city, with more coaching classes, educational institutes, and hospitals than I could count during my visit.

A list of Indian Rajput kings or rulers of Alwar

Its inheritance in the form of monuments constructed by various kings, lives on in the older parts of the city, though – the City Palace also known as Vinay Vilas Mahal, Bala Quila, Siliserh Lake, Bhangarh Fort, Vijay Mandir Palace and Moti Doongri. Sariska Tiger Reserve is an added attraction for wildlife enthusiasts.

The City Palace, a sprawling two-storeyed marble and sandstone structure, was once the residence of King Vinay Singh. Imposing gates, with names like Jai Pol and Kishan Pol, must have been built keeping the movement of elephants in mind, which were still in use during his reign (1815-1857). In the middle of the central courtyard is a raised platform, steps leading up to it and marble chhatris (domed pavilions) atop enormous bases. In the right wing are beautifully carved lattice sandstone screens on jharokhas (balconies) while the left wing is rather unremarkable.

Move to the Sagar reservoir behind the palace and your imagination will recreate scenes from a royal past – the queen walking down steps to the water, anklets tinkling, as the sun reflects off the gold and silver embroidery on her lehenga (skirt). Exiled Mughal Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) looking down from the fort Bala Quila, wondering when he would return to Agra. King Vinay Singh galloping on a horse, making his way to a hunting retreat at Siliserh Lake Palace….

For those who don’t believe in flights of fancy, the Government Museum at the City Palace (Vinay Vilas Mahal) holds real relics (photography not allowed). The collection divided into three sections, features war equipment belonging to warriors like Maharana Pratap, Muhammad Ghori, Akbar and their armies in the third one – Expansive armour so heavy that it seems impossible that the wearer could move, let alone fight battles in it; Beautifully crafted swords with ivory inlays and deadly edges; Tortoiseshell shields; Pistols and guns with jade butts; Daggers, concealed in harmless- looking objects, that make your stomach churn thinking of the havoc they might have wreaked.

Whether you find the idea of battle and its fallout horrific or not, the sheer size and variety of weaponry at the Alwar Museum gives you a glimpse of the immense strength and dexterity it must have demanded of their owners. Little wonder arms training used to begin young and stretch over several hours each day.

There are other reminders of an imperial life, ranging from a once-mechanized silver dining table to an imported bicycle and ivory slippers. The eclectic collection also has rare, handwritten Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Sanskrit manuscripts including a biography of Babur (founder of the Mughal Empire in India) and an illustrated form of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Gulistan of S’adi, a Persian prose masterpiece and works of Faizi, a celebrated poet and scholar in Mughal Emperor Akbar’s court also find pride of place. A display of miniature paintings of the Alwar school, which combines Hindu and Muslim elements, goes beyond aesthetics, educating visitors about various ragas of Hindustani classical music.

Step out and walk to the back of the building. The water reservoir Sagar reveals itself, a step well design and temples at the periphery giving the impression of a river ghat. Perhaps that was the intention of King Vinay Singh, who is said to have built the tank in 1815.

In a state which has a lone perennial river named Chambal, Rajput rulers came up with intricately designed step wells, tanks and even artificial lakes like the Jaisamand Lake in Udaipur, to compensate for the water deficit.

On one side of the reservoir stands a sandstone and marble cenotaph called ‘Moosi Maharani ki Chattri’. The mortal remains of King Bakhtawar Singh, the man who built the City Palace in 1793, and his wife Queen Moosi rest here. It’s rather poignant that the Queen burnt herself on the pyre of her dead husband, a brutal practice known as ‘Sati’, banned by the British in 1829 after social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy led a movement against it.

Royal affairs are no longer on the minds of people today who’re busy with government and legal business as offices have taken over the  City Palace. Ugly, thick wires for air conditioning and lighting mar the beauty of the structure. Pigeons feel at home, their gurgling sounds heard from crumbling balconies and windows. Cows, mouths full of cud, laze around while motorcycles are lined up against the lotus shaped bases of the grand Chhatris in the central courtyard. In the background stand the Aravali Hills, one of the oldest hill ranges in the world, witnessing yet another year in history go by.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR ALWAR GOVERNMENT MUSEUM

• The Museum is open from 9.45 am- 5.15 pm on all days except Mondays , when it is shut . (Most websites wrongly mention that the museum is shut on Fridays). Best day to visit is Sunday when the government offices are closed and crowds are thin.
• Photography is prohibited. Don’t try to sneak around and take pictures when no one is noticing – it’s against the law
• It takes around 1.5-2 hours to see the museum and there is no place to sit and take a break
• Lighting is not that great, so get there early to make use of natural light
• Be prepared for a steep climb – there are sections of stairs and ramps
• Rajasthan is hot most of the time. Carry water, especially if you are accompanied by kids
• There is a toilet/washroom on the property which can be used in case of an emergency, but is best avoided otherwise

Karni Mata Temple – There is another temple by this name near Bikaner, famous for hosting several rats on the holy site. This Karni Mata Temple, however, is free of rodents and honors the deity of the royal families of Bikaner and Jodhpur. It’s on the way to Bala Quila

Bala Quila or Alwar Fort – It can be seen from the City Palace but has to be approached via a different route. It’s in a dilapidated condition but offers a scenic view of Alwar city.

Siliserh Lake and Palace – Though the water is not very clean, boating is offered at Siliserh Lake. You also get a mesmerizing view of the Aravalli range from the lake. The Siliserh Palace has now been converted to a heritage hotel where you can stay

Sariska Wildlife Reserve or Sariska National Park – The park is known for its tigers and is open everyday from October till May end from 6 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. While you’re there, also visit the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and pay your respects to Lord Shiva

Company Bagh – If you’re in the mood for a walk among shady trees, head over to Company Bagh or Company Garden, also known as Purjan Vihar

Vijay Mandir Palace – It’s not open to the public but you can take pictures of the structure from outside

HOW TO REACH ALWAR

By flight –  Jaipur or Sanganer Airport (Code – JAI). Given its importance on the tourist circuit, there are enough flights to Jaipur from major airports.

By train – The closest railway station is Alwar Junction (Station code – AWR)

From Mumbai, at the moment, the only train is no. 12216 Garibrath, which leaves Bandra Terminus at 12.45 pm and reaches at 9.16 am. The journey time is 20.5 hours.

From New Delhi, you have several train options and it takes 2.5-4 hours. From Jaipur, it is only a 2-2.5 hour journey by train.

By Road – Jaipur to Alwar by road is 143-160 km on Google Maps (from Hawa Mahal to City Palace, Ladiya Mohalla and it takes 3-3.5 hours to get there. With a break and normal traffic, it should take 4-4.5 hours.

WHERE TO STAY IN ALWAR

The best option would be Dadhikar Fort, around 8 km from City Palace as it gives you a feel of staying in a fort, not just visiting one. Oyo Rooms and Ankur Hotel offer economical options in Alwar. For a more luxurious stay, go for Neemrana Fort-Palace (72 km away).

Use any of the hotel booking sites like Cleartrip, MakeMyTrip or Yatra or price comparison sites like Trivago or Tripadvisor to book a room.

WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT IN ALWAR

Prem Pavitra Bhojnalaya, near the old bus stand, offers good Indian food at reasonable prices. If you have the stomach for it, street side vendors serve items like Chhole Bhature and snacks like samosas and chat.

Though authentic Rajasthani fare is items like Ker Sangri and Gatte ki sabzi, all food joints don’t have them. Lassi (sweet, sometimes a little too sweet) or chaach (salted) are diluted forms of curd and are advised to beat the heat.

MGB Hotels offers a variety of cuisines at its restaurant, which is open to outsiders. The food is tasty, but the prices are a bit steep and sometimes you can only have the fixed price buffet, not what is on the menu (a la carte).

I lived in alwar for almost 5 years and only saw the palace just before I left…. it is beautiful, no doubt… and one takes much for granted. The food is not too Rajasthani… well because this region is less arid so grows more variety of vegetables. You should have checked out Itarana palace too…

That’s true. Despite having spent a large part of my growing years in North India, I went to see the Taj Mahal only after I moved to Mumbai. 🙂 Sadly, didn’t have time on this trip to do much else in Alwar. Will visit Itarana Palace the next time I go…fingers crossed.
