The kelp forest is beautiful and there are lots of fish. The visibility is ok: the water is clear but everything is blurry more than 10-20 feet from the boat. The guide was personable and attentive. The main attraction on this tour is the opportunity to pay extra onboard to shoot "fish food torpedoes". By going out there multiple times per day every day with food, the boat crew has trained some of the wild fish species to approach the boat looking for food. The fish rush over to your porthole if you release food with the button at your seat. As long as a few people on the boat are feeding them, lots of fish swarm around the boat, and even when no one feeds them a lot of fish linger around the boat. It's a good gimmick and an effective way to see the fish, but as far as viewing nature it feels more like feeding pigeons in a park than going bird watching in the forest. It was nice to see the different fishes around the island and watch people shoot food so more fishes would come! We booked through Tripadvisor which helped us save money compared to booking it around the area. The number of seats in a vehicle vary and all seating is assigned by driver at time of tour. Due to vehicle layouts you may be seated away from your party in the same vehicle. Guests may be required to sit 3 across in the back row in the same vehicle to accommodate all parties and any Covid Regulations. Vehicle types include Custom Tundras and Custom Jeeps and vehicle type can change up until tour time. Masks are not currently required in open air vehicles. Five New Reasons to Visit Catalina Island

A big thanks to Catalina Island Company for arranging my stay so I could provide this detailed review of my experience.

Flashbacks of Italy came to mind as we spiraled up and around switchback turns from the harbor town of Avalon. The cliff-hugging ocean vista views were certainly worth these fearful moments, expressing “OMG” aloud as we whizzed above the aquamarine crystal-clear waters below, where white boats accented the dazzling blue hues and homes hung off the curved hugging hillsides. We hit the bumpy dirt Stagecoach Road summit in a 1993 fully restored bus named Betsy, driven by an expert, experienced storyteller with many cautionary tales of approaching and talking to the island’s wild bison. As we bounced along, we admired the raw beauty of the land, untouched and rugged with sloped rolling green hills, more verdant than ever due to recent rains. The air felt so fresh that I wondered if breathing deeply here might prolong my life.

We’ve experienced a similar adventure on a biofuel Hummer, in search of the free-roaming American Bison (about 50 descendants left from a movie shoot in the 1920s) and the island’s endemic fox – a once-endangered species that are just as curious as us.  One evening at dusk at Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors, five of the petite cat-like creatures with blackberry noses sniffed us out over sunset wine on the terrace. They’re adorable!

This time, we arrived in Catalina to venture an hour into the interior to experience El Rancho Escondido , the Wrigley family’s hidden ranch, now open to the public for the first time ever. The tour, offered by Catalina Island Company, was oh so much more than we imagined.

Pro Tip:  To get to Catalina Island, book one of the eight modern Catalina Express vessels that depart from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point year-round. Be sure to upgrade the hour-long journey on one of their sleek smooth-riding boats with comfortable seating in the Commodore Lounge. For $20 more per ticket, enjoy priority boarding and check-in privileges, with complimentary beverages and snacks served right to your seat. Bubbly, beer, and wine are among the options. For added privacy and exclusivity, upgrade to the Captain’s Lounge with your six closest friends. Venture into the island’s interior to a Hidden Ranch

Built in 1932 by Philip and Helen Wrigley, the island’s Arabian horse ranch was once used for a Wild West Cattle Show, as Philip Wrigley (who died in 1977) wanted to develop a place in the interior of the island as a tourist destination.  The couple set out to develop a breeding program for Santa Catalina Island’s wild horses. By the 1950s, their efforts evolved into breeding champion Arabian horses that were exhibited at shows and competitions across the US. El Rancho became a world-class horse ranch that dignitaries came to visit in later years to get away from it all.

The spectacular landmark, nearly a century old, with a Spanish-style courtyard and stables, recently underwent a two-year remodel. The three- to four-hour tour includes a horse exhibition where guests learn about horses’ body functions, behavioral habits, how different types of horses are used, and horse ranch riding techniques. We loved being able to pet the horses and take photos with them. The golden, sleek, honey-colored stallion – similar to a palomino – was beautiful, while the wild speed of the white Arabian mare was impressive to witness. Once Palomino and feral horses could be found on the ranch because they could be let loose, but in the 1930s, they decided a higher class of horse was needed, so they brought an Arabian stallion named Kabba to the island in 1931. Today, many horses on the island are descendants of those bred in the mid-20 th century.

An impressive Saddle & Trophy Room houses one-of-a-kind saddles, trophies won, and many personal Western memorabilia and photos from the Wrigleys. In addition to serving as a home for the family’s horses, the estate features vines of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, planted in 2008 for Rusack Vineyards, who determined the same type of grapes that grow well in Burgundy grow well in Catalina. Their sustainable practices deliver handcrafted award-winning wines with a tasting room and winery on the central coast.

The second stop at The Bishop’s Chapel, with original stained-glass windows, comes with more awe-inspiring views. Learn about Jory’s Bell, the 130-year-old Baptismal Font, and the cross that once sat atop the entry doors to the downtown Los Angeles Cathedral of St. Paul’s, having spent 30 years on Santa Cruz Island before being refurbished and gifted to The Bishop’s Chapel in 2021.

If time permits, the tour may stop at the private “Airport in the Sky” in the center of the island to learn about the island’s exciting aviation history and grab one of their Killer Cookies or Bison Burgers to go.

The Wrigley family has preserved the island’s natural beauty, deeding 42,000 acres to the Catalina Island Conservancy, a non-profit they established in 1972. Their daughter, Alison Rigley Rusack, and her husband, Geoff Rusack, have continued to serve as custodians of the island.

Pro Tips: Wear sturdy shoes. Bring binoculars. Close your eyes if you are scared of heights. Use the bathroom beforehand, although clean bathrooms are available at the ranch. Find the local Rusack wine at the Vons store in town.

Sip a flight of California craft brews from Flx Biergarten

This new colorful open-air Biergarten right in town offers a variety of exceptional SoCal suds with fire pits, outdoor games, and even beer pong. On a summer day, you’ll love the Firestone Cali Squeeze Blood Orange Hefeweizen (an island favorite) or Captain Fatty’s Brewery Beach Beer from Goleta with a lemon cucumber aftertaste. They have cultivated a selection of brews that will appeal to all. Check out the fun beer tap handles like Beachwood Brewing’s golden trophies with delicious West Coast IPAs. Wine, seltzer, kombucha, and nonalcoholic options are also available.

You may notice the Flx bus has the same logo as the new Biergarten, taking its name from the iconic 50s Flxible buses that carried tourists on the streets of Avalon and the island’s interior.

Pro Tip: Order a beer flight to try many unique SoCal craft beers and pair them with snacks like Spicy Teriyaki Jerky and mustard pretzels.

Dive deep into history with a self-guided Catalina “Casino” Tour

Step back in time and appreciate Catalina’s most well-known landmark with a $20 self-guided tour . Explore the historic building, watch films from the silent movie era in the cinema, and marvel at the sweeping views of Avalon Bay from the second-floor veranda. Built in 1929, the “Casino” – originally from Italian as a gathering or entertaining place – is an entertainment destination and not a gambling venue. This is where the red-carpet movie premier was born, where old-school Hollywood starlets flocked, and where the first sound and motion picture theater began.

Today, admire the Art Deco details of the past – like hand-painted murals at the entrance, ornamental light fixtures, the original pipe organ, and the auditorium’s murals depicting the history of the island, California, and the progress of man. On the top level in the Casino, imagine 4,000 people dancing the night away to Big Band music in the world’s largest circular ballroom.

Pro Tip: Photo opportunities abound on the top level with soaring columns and views of the entire harbor.

Explore Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater and New Exhibits at the Catalina Museum for Art and History

Find Chicago Cubs memorabilia at the Catalina Museum for Art and History along with films about Catalina and the people who’ve inhabited the island. Permanent exhibits include Dale Chihuly’s Aureolin’s yellow spire chandelier and the Roy Rose Sculpture Garden. The Cabinet of Curiosities, in honor of its 70 th anniversary, displays 70 objects showcasing the rich heritage of the island over 70 years.

Nearby, find the Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater to experience “IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders” in an immersive bubble that simulates scuba diving through the world's oceans. Perfect for young kids or those who aren’t ready to kayak, snorkel, or scuba offshore just yet, the IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders 30-minute virtual dive may whet your desire to explore the island. The full 360-degree film captures moments from all angles and offers total immersion in Catalina’s lush kelp forests, getting up close and personal with majestic whale sharks, playful sea lions and dolphins, bull sharks, manta rays, and a rare dugong.

Pro Tip:   Ten percent of Ocean Wonders ticket sales are donated to conservation groups affiliated with filming locations. Open from 12 noon to 8:30 PM; arrive 15 minutes before show time.

Stay at the recently renovated Hotel Atwater

Right in the town center, in the heart of Avalon, and steps from all of the restaurants, shops, and land and ocean excursions, a recent hotel renovation stays true to the Wrigley family legacy. Hotel Atwater is decorated in refreshing oceanic style décor and showcases a large, bold, colored painting that anchors the check-in, showing what Catalina may have once looked like long ago. Established in 1920, Hotel Atwater was the first hotel built by the Catalina Island Company under the ownership of William Wrigley, Jr., who named the hotel after Helen Atwater Wrigley, wife of his son Philip Knight Wrigley.

The airy and bright lobby is a nice place to rest, with historic Wrigley artifacts such as talented musician Helen Atwater Wrigley’s prized accordion, built by hand in Stradella, Italy. In the lobby’s bathroom, have a chuckle and look closely at the wallpaper depicting cheeky whimsical animals behaving badly - smoking and drinking champagne.

A stay here means sleeping peacefully in a comfy bed with luxurious linens, in one of 95 modern rooms and suites. Even 2 mini bottles of bubbly await in the room’s fridge. Enjoy added perks like a $20 daily restaurant credit for dining and drinks, 15% off Catalina Island Company activities and tours, use of beach towels, and luggage service to and from the ferry terminal.

Next door to the lobby, guests can find the hotel’s new Bistro at the Atwater Café – serving yummy coffee medleys, scrumptious pastries, warm quiches, and breakfast sandwiches and burritos – perfect to take on the go to the beach or elsewhere. Try the Machaca Breakfast Burrito with shredded beef and Oaxacan cheese stuffed inside the scrambled eggs and cilantro onion mix. Here, a neon sign reminds you “In All the World, No Place Like This.”

Pro Tips: Mosey a block over for lunch or dinner at Avalon Grille for exceptional meats, local fish like fresh seared yellowtail atop truffle mashed potatoes and pork belly bites, and the island’s famous Buffalo Milk cocktail – created in the 1970s – a boozy milkshake made with vodka, coffee liqueur, crème de Banana, Crème de Cacao, vanilla ice cream, banana, and whipped cream doused with nutmeg. Yum! Nearby, Bluewater Grill serves up seafood and clam chowder and Descanso Beach Club is a great beachfront option for lunch on the water.

Catalina is a memorable destination any time of year. While summer is the most popular time to visit, May and October may be the best months, with great weather and fewer crowds. Special events include weekend festivities like marathons, jazz festivals, craft festivals, and the ever-popular Catalina Wine Mixer.

Local Pro Tips:

Visit mid-week when there are fewer crowds and better deals.

Book the Sea Wolf semi-submersible adventure to get face-to-face with marine life as you cruise 5 feet below.

Take the yellow Cyclone power boat ferry to Two Harbors, on the other end of the island, for a day or overnight. It leaves early in the morning and returns to the main harbor of Avalon around 4 PM.

Restaurants are upgrading. Lobster Trap should be open by summer as they are renovating and expanding with a sushi bar. Antonio’s is taking over the old Pier 24 opening with a new menu concept by summer.

Service Provides $1.8 Million for Boating Infrastructure Projects in California

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it will provide a $1.5 million Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) to the California Department of Parks and Recreation to improve aquatic infrastructure on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay. The grant will support the replacement of the dilapidated Angel Island Ayala Cove Boat Docks at Angel Island State Park, increasing recreational access. The Service will also provide $300,000 to the department to improve infrastructure at Avalon Harbor on Santa Catalina Island, part of the Channel Islands.

Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the San Francisco Bay, offers multiple recreational activities, including hiking trails, campsites and boat docks. As part of the rehabilitation project, California Department of Parks and Recreation plans to increase the number of slips from 42 to 48. The improved facility will be ADA-compliant, include lighting and potable fresh water, which the current facility lacks. In addition to the $1.5 million in BIG funding, California Department of Parks and Recreation will provide $1.2 million in non-federal match funding to complete the project. 

The Service will provide an additional $300,000 to the California Department of Parks and Recreation to design and replace a 20-year-old dinghy dock and gangway at Avalon Harbor on Santa Catalina Harbor. When completed, the project will provide ADA-compliant access to city amenities. In addition to the $300,000 in BIG funding, the California Department of Parks and Recreation will provide $100,000 in non-federal match funding to complete the project.

Across the country, the Service announced more than $21 million in Boating Infrastructure Grant funding to support construction, renovation and maintenance of marinas and other boating facilities for outdoor recreation and waterway access. This year’s grants will support projects in 21 states, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Reauthorized under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Bipartisan Infrastructure Law The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) is a once-in-a-generation investment in the nation’s infrastructure and economic competitiveness. We were directly appropriated $455 million over five years in BIL funds for programs related to the President’s America the Beautiful initiative. Learn more about Bipartisan Infrastructure Law , BIG is part of a state-industry-federal partnership. The partnership and its resulting grants provide people with access to places where they can connect with nature and participate in outdoor activities such as boating and fishing.

“BIG funds benefit local communities and waterways and the recreational boaters who enjoy them,” said Service Director Martha Williams. “These grants provide opportunities for boating and fishing while improving economies in local communities, offering easy access to waterfronts and much-needed facilities.” 

Under the BIG program, eligible partner boating agencies from all states, commonwealths, territories and the District of Columbia can submit proposals for two different tiers of funding, each requiring that most grantees provide a matching share of at least 25% of project costs. Tier 1 provides maximum federal funding of $300,000 per state annually, while Tier 2 funding is nationally competitive and is typically for larger-scale projects with maximum federal funding of $1.5 million per application. The Angel Island project will receive Tier 2 funding, and the Avalon Harbor project will receive Tier 1 funding.

This year more than $4.4 million will fund projects in 18 states as well as Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands under the BIG Tier 1 subprogram, and over $17 million will fund projects in 12 states (nine of which are also receiving Tier 1 grants) under the BIG Tier 2 subprogram.

Since its inception in 2000, BIG has awarded over $300 million to projects for large transient recreational boats (those over 26 feet in length and staying 15 days or less), including funding the construction of more than 7,000 berths and other amenities such as fuel docks and Wi-fi access and benefitting boaters across most states, commonwealths, territories and the District of Columbia. Boaters and manufacturers fund the program through excise taxes and duties on boating fuels and certain fishing and boating equipment, directed to the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund and administered by the Service. Grantees can use BIG funds to construct, renovate and maintain marinas and other facilities with features for large transient boats that are used for recreation. Grantees may also use funds to produce and distribute information and educational materials about the BIG program and recreational boating.

OASIS Sailing Club ready to launch its Opening Day celebration

The Oasis Sailing Club will usher in the start of the sailing season on Friday when it holds its 37th annual Opening Day ceremony.

“It’s a longstanding yachting and sailing tradition to have an opening day. It’s usually quite formal, with the officers and everyone dressed in their blue blazers and white slacks,” said Laura DeSoto, who serves as secretary for the club in Newport Harbor.

“We laugh here in California because we sail all year long and, obviously in the Midwest or the Great Lakes or the East Coast, Opening Day has a little bit of a different meaning in that truly when they open the yachting season. But, here, we’re so fortunate in Southern California.”

DeSoto said all the local harbor’s yacht clubs typically host opening ceremonies around April and invite each other’s commodores to attend.

In addition to the ceremony, which includes a welcome speech from the Commodore Stan Espenship, and words from other dignitaries, members of the public will also be able to see an on-water display by the Orange County Harbor Patrol. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with registration and the ceremony will being promptly at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Balboa Yacht Basin at 829 Harbor Island Drive.

DeSoto said the club will also be organizing tours of the club’s two Catalina sloops — Oasis V and Oasis VI — for interested attendees and prospective club members.

There will also be informational displays, a lunch and an open house. DeSoto said she is aware sailing often feels out of reach for people, but that she was hopeful the open house and ceremony would bring attention to the club, where membership is $65 a month.

“[The Oasis Sailing Club] is this gem that’s probably not as well known. If you own a boat, forget it. But, we’re fortunate that the Friends of the OASIS Senior Center and the city help. It’s really to make sailing accessible, but you don’t have to be a senior to be a part of the club,” DeSoto said. “It’s an amazing resource that people don’t know about.”

Climb aboard an open-air biofuel Hummer and go in search of American bison on this exciting expedition into Catalina’s rugged interior. Catalina’s American bison, sometimes referred to as buffalo, are descendants of a small herd left on the island by a movie crew in the 1920s. Today the Catalina Island Conservancy maintains Catalina's American bison herd at about 150 to protect both the bison and the island’s landscape.

The popular Bison Expedition is a unique experience you’ll only find on Catalina Island. This 2-hour 4-wheeling adventure offers you an excellent opportunity to see American bison in the wild as you journey through favorite grazing grounds of these majestic animals, which were named the national mammal of the United States in 2016.

While you keep your eyes peeled for Catalina's American bison grazing on the hillsides, your guide will share interesting facts about Catalina's history, flora and fauna as you journey through historic Middle Ranch and up rugged Cape Canyon to a scenic overlook on Black Jack Mountain. Then it’s down the original 19th-century stagecoach route, which offers sweeping views of the majestic Catalina coast and beautiful blue Pacific all the way back to Avalon.

The Micropropagation Connection: Our Relationship With Plants And How Cloning Plants Can Affect The Greater Biosphere:  : An up close look at the micropropagation of Catalina Island’s Rarest Plants with Rare Plant Ecologist, Kevin Alison.  We examine how applications in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and plant breeding has made cloning plants a fast growing trend. How can micropropagation impact the plants in our lives?  What does the use of plant tissue culture mean for you and me?  How can micropropagation help in preserving endangered plants?  Plant clones have actually been around! We look at how asexual reproduction has taken place millions of years before sexual reproduction.  *Seating is limited. Please arrive early.

OUR MODERATOR

Dr. Yewande Pearse is a neuroscientist, public speaker, and science communicator with twenty years of research experience in various facets of Neuroscience at leading institutions such as the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience at King's College London and The Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA. Driven by a mission to redefine where science storytelling belongs and a belief in the power of science to connect people and communities, Dr. Pearse has collaborated with a diverse array of organizations, including the Sundance Film Festival, Headspace, The Natural History Museum, California Science Center, Female Collective, TEDMED, DEEM Journal, Grow Magazine, Dublab Radio, and NTS Radio.

Kevin Alison is the Rare Plant Ecologist for the Catalina Island Conservancy. He uses his education and experience as a conservationist, plant scientist, and horticulturalist to ensure the rare plants of Santa Catalina Island do not go extinct.

JaRon Marshall + the collective is a 4-piece instrumental group from Austin, Texas. It features JaRon Marshall (Black Pumas), Sam Howden (Soul Food Horns, Coleslaw.Records, Slug), Michael Longoria (Bob Schneider, Patty Griffin), Chris Loveland (Clunis). They recently recorded their debut album in Austin, Texas at Black Pumas’ producer, Adrian Quesada’s Electric Deluxe Recorders. They are inspired by jazz-hop influencers such as Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, as well as the modern spiritualists Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings.

Together, on their debut recording Speak, Moment, Dave Harrington, Max Jaffe, and Patrick Shiroishi establish hypnotic and richly textured guitar-driven tapestries colored with the effervescent thread of a yearning saxophone melody that might be torn loose in an instant by thunderous percussion or febrile grooves.

Rocio " Wyldeflower " Contreras aka Ro is an on-air radio host and DJ on 89.9 KCRW & dublab, a budding music supervisor, and creative from Pasadena, California. With decades of experience in art, festival, orchestral concert production and programming. Ro is inspired by discovery; exploring new and classic sounds from all over the globe ranging from tropicalia, mpb, soul, funk, jazz & beyond. Catch her behind the turntables setting intention with her vinyl collection & carefully curated otherworldly sonic selections.

GeeXella (pronounced Jee-EL-LUH) is an AfroLatinx, Non-binary, and Queer transdisciplinary artist. They are currently occupying space in Muscogee Creek Land, also known as Atlanta, GA. They engage with their work as an extension of cultural organizing for the liberation of Black and marginalized people. 

TASTE: Sad Girl Creamery is a small batch ice cream company based in Los Angeles, California. The owner, SueEllen Mancini, draws inspiration from her own Latin American heritage and honors the heritage of others in her flavors and ice cream novelties. Aside from creating delicious ice cream SueEllen also uses her social media outlets to bring attention to mental health awareness in her community. 

SCENT:   Herbalaria is a family company bridging the rich heritage of Filipino plant healing tradition and culture with the demands of contemporary wellness.
