We’re certainly starting this review out with a masterpiece of a rod from Douglas. This is a 4-piece 9’ fly rod with a truly remarkable overall weight of 2.7 Oz. Douglas was able to achieve this incredibly lightweight by using their proprietary G-Tec blank.

These blanks are incredibly advanced, with graphene platelets added to the resin mix for startling power and accuracy and a swing weight light enough for you to fish all weekend effortlessly. The titanium recoil guides are crushproof, and can be bent back into place easily and repeatedly should you mangle them, making this rod super durable.

The Cerecoil stripping guide minimizes friction and together with the REC titanium guides, there’s hardly any friction when shooting back or forward. The attention to detail and purposeful engineering that Douglas is known for truly shines with their Sky G 5wt.

Reviewers were left in awe at the accuracy of this rod’s short game and subsequent ability to go the distance with bigger bugs. It is a modern engineering marvel, and incredibly versatile.

Thomas and Thomas is a company that has been producing quality top-tier rods since 1969. The T&T Zone series of rods is this company’s foray into “the mid-tier.” It’s hard to tell that the Zone series is not business as usual for T&T, because this rod exudes quality and masterful workmanship, just like their other rods.

The blank is impressive, using T&T’s proprietary StratoTherm Resin, which allows for both greater durability and less weight (3.21 Oz is still super light). Chrome single-foot snake guides do their part to keep the weight off as well, and the zirconium insert in the stripping guide reduces friction to a negligible level.

This rod is versatile, as most 5wt’s are, and makes an excellent everyday trout rod as well as a backup worthy of keeping in your seasonal rotation.

Orvis is a company that should need no introduction. They’ve been in the fly fishing game a long time, and that means they are both passionate and extremely knowledgeable about all things fish and fly.

The Helios 3 series of rods from Orvis come in two different versions, the 3F (F=Feel) and the 3D (D=Distance). These rods were built to better accommodate the style that you like. I’ll be reviewing the F type here, which is a boon for the committed “dry fly or die” anglers amongst us.

This rod was designed for delicate but precise presentations of even the smallest dries in the short-to-mid range, and it excels at this. Unparalleled sensitivity coupled with a medium/fast action allows you to get those bugs (or series of bugs!) where you want, every time. This revamp of an already classic series from Orvis lives up to the hype for the specialist.

G. Loomis and co. produce some of the most durable, precise, and powerful blanks on the market. Rod wrappers and collectors alike all have incredibly positive things to say about these rods, and this is why they are renowned and respected all over the world.

The IMX Pro 5wt blank uses Conduit Core technology , which replaces brittle graphite with a substitute proprietary material. What this means is a lighter rod that is more durable while retaining considerable fish-wrangling power in the butt section.

This rod has a fast action, but it’s not so fast that a beginner might find it difficult to use it out of the box. The price doesn’t make me wince either, and this is a great 5wt offering from G. Loomis.

Uses for a 5wt Fly Rod

There’s nothing like trout on a 5wt. Whether that’s big browns and ‘bows in bigger water, or tenacious brookies in high mountain streams, a 5wt can excel in both situations.

The versatility of a 5wt is what makes it the usually suggested rod for the beginner. I find a 5wt particularly useful when I’m fishing new water because I can use multiple different techniques (and flies) without changing my reel or carrying a second rod.

5wt rods are also effective on warm-water fish, particularly smallmouth. Largemouth aren’t excluded from the fun here either, because 5wt’s are more than capable of throwing foam poppers and mouse flies to appeal to them.

Don’t write a 5wt off as just a small stream trout rod. Does that mean I would actively pursue muskie with a 5wt? No, probably not (but definitely chain pickerel). Still, it’s not impossible. This is what makes a 5wt so versatile and useful.

What to Look for in a 5wt Fly Rod

When considering a 5wt fly rod that’s right for you, length is one thing to look for. Shorter lengths mean fewer encounters with obstacles (brush, overhang, etc) but limit your overall range and to some extent your accuracy.

Longer 5wt’s can handle larger fish and send flies further and with more accuracy than shorter lengths, but they can become very frustrating to use, especially if you’re just bank fishing. Another thing to consider in a 5wt fly rod is the action.

Medium/fast action is more forgiving of operator errors when casting, while fast action is precise and powerful, even in the face of wind and rain. As always, consider what you intend on using your 5wt for before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is a 5wt rod enough for bigger fish?

A: The answer here is yes. Some local anglers here on my home waters of Central PA use a 5wt for largemouth bass and largemouth bass only. If you’re really concerned with bigger fish on a 5wt go long, and use a stronger tippet. This line weight can handle it.

Q: What would make you pick up a 5wt as opposed to a 7wt or 3wt?

A: While a 5wt is incredibly versatile, I would switch to a 5wt depending on what’s biting. If I intended on pursuing big smallmouth, but I’m starting to see rising trout, I’d probably switch to my 5wt.

On the other hand, if my nymphing game on my 3wt is only producing small chubs, I’d switch to a 5wt after trying slightly bigger flies. The situations that are suitable for a 5wt are near endless.

Q Is it worth investing in a quality 5wt?

A: My answer here is yes. Since these rods are useful in all freshwater situations, it’s worth it to me to possess one that is of the highest quality I can afford.

The best travel fly rods come in 6- or 8-piece sections. The most important reason to choose a travel fly rod is portability. If you want a fly rod to easily fit into a duffel bag, carryon luggage, backpack, or even a fly fishing sling pack, a travel fly rod is for you.

While most fly rods are already very lightweight, travel fly rods excel with backpackers because they are so easy to stow into a backpack. Once you invest in a true backpacking fly rod, hauling a 4-piece fly rod in the mountains seems mildly annoying.

Still, 4-piece fly rods that are 9′ long are already very portable — travel fly rods just take portability to a whole new level. Because the ferrels overlap, the standard section length of a 9′ 4-piece fly rod is around 28 inches. On the other hand, a 6-piece fly rod has sections that are only 18 inches long. That’s a huge gain in portability, and it just gets better with 7-piece or even 8-piece travel rods.

Best Travel Fly Rods: How Well Do They Cast?

Because of improvements in ferrel technology, travel fly rods are getting closer to the smooth performance found in 4-piece rods. Travel rods are not as fantastic as the best 4-piece fly rods, but they’re surprisingly good. I’ve found that with a firmer casting motion, travel rods will perform remarkably well. For instance, I was able to cast large October caddis flies with a 9’ 5-weight Cabela’s Stowaway 6 with good distance and decent accuracy. Read my full Cabela’s Stowaway 6 review for more detail. At the other end of the travel rod spectrum, I was able to cast heavily weighted steelhead nymphs and egg patterns with a 9’ 8-weight ECHO TRIP.

Both rods performed even better when I used smaller flies.

Don’t expect any travel rod to be liquid smooth, but they’ll get the job done and let you focus on the fishing. As it turns out, I personally learned a lesson the hard way: Always Take the Rod .

Best Travel Fly Rods: The Manufacturers

There are three major contenders for the best travel fly rod that will fit most people’s budgets: Cabela’s , Echo , and Orvis — and we’ll get into these options in detail below.   However, this isn’t the full story.

L.L.Bean has a travel fly/spin fishing rod combo — noted below — but the company no longer makes a dedicated travel fly rod. On the upside, the L.L.Bean outfit comes with two complete rods and reels , so technically you could choose the L.L.Bean option for the fly rod . . . and gain an extra spinning rod whether you want it or not.

Hardy makes a drool-worthy high-end travel fly rod in 6 pieces, but the price-to-value ratio is a tough sell unless you’ve got the budget to buy the “best” high-end travel fly rod.

Redington makes a 3-weight and a 5-weight 6-piece version of its Classic Trout rod, but it’s sometimes hard to find because most stores stock the 4-piece versions.

Let’s take a closer look.

Best Travel Fly Rod: Cabela’s Stowaway 6

There is a lot to like about the Cabela’s Stowaway 6 fly rod, starting with the wide variety of configurations. Cabela’s makes an ultralight 8’6″ 3-weight as well as a 7’6″ 4-weight. There is also an 8’6″ 4-weight, which is a super versatile combination for smaller streams, as well as the most common 9′ 5w. In addition, you can pick up a 9′ 6w or 9′ 8w.

As for fit and finish, the Stowaway 6 is great. The cork and guides are good. While the varnish is a bit thicker than you see on truly high-end rods, it all comes together in a package that’s better than its price range would imply. The woven graphite reel seat looks fantastic in the sun. We’re big fans.

The action is medium fast, with a stiff butt section and relatively soft tip.

Meanwhile, Cabela’s offers two different Stowaway 6 Rod and Reel and Fly Line combinations if you’re looking for a travel fly rod and reel outfit. The Stowaway 6 Fly Rod with the Prestige Plus Fly Reel Combo is the most affordable, and the reel is pretty good overall. For an upgraded reel with a smoother drag and better build, Cabela’s offers the Stowaway 6 with the RLS+ Fly Reel, which also comes with upgraded fly line. Both are great, can’t-go-wrong options.  Highly recommended.

Best Travel Fly Rod: ECHO TRIP

The ECHO TRIP takes portability to a whole new level with its new ultraportable 8-piece backpacking, travel, and backseat fly rod. The action is medium fast, and for a rod that has 8 pieces that are just 15 inches or so in length, the ECHO TRIP casts surprisingly well. As with all of these travel fly rods, you’re going to get your best results with a firm and intentional casting motion. Casting and overall action is similar to 6-piece rods — the TRIP just gets you a form factor that pushes the portability factor even farther. So cool.

ECHO doesn’t offer the TRIP in a combo package, but the ECHO ION Reel is a very good, very affordable reel.

Orvis Clearwater Travel Rods

With the recent redesign of its popular midrange Clearwater fly rod series, Orvis is offering four models of its new  Clearwater 6-Piece Fly Rods . These rods use some of the new rod-building technology and techniques Orvis learned when it developed its high-end Helios 3 rods, but Orvis packages it all up at an affordable price point. Best Travel Fly Rod: Hardy Demon Smuggler

Hardy makes some of the very best fly rods in the world, and the Demon Smuggler is aimed at frequent travelers who also want a high-performing rod with fantastic fit and finish. At just under $650, the Hardy Demon Smuggler is the most expensive travel rod on this page by a long shot. It is, however, beautiful and has a truly kickass name.

It is a 6-piece fly rod and Hardy offers an 8’ 4w, 9’ 5w, 9’6w, 9’ 8w, 9’6” 7w, and a 14’6” 10w.

The action is medium fast. The Demon Smuggler comes with a sweet aluminum rod tube.

If you’re in for a Demon Smuggler, pair it with the can’t-go-wrong Hardy Ultralite MTX-S Fly Reel and you’ll end up with an awesome travel combo. Long story short: If you have the budget, nab a Demon Smuggler and don’t look back.

Best Travel Fly Rod: Redington Classic Trout

Redington’s Classic Trout fly rod series is primarily a 4-piece lineup . . . BUT Redington offers two 6-piece versions of this rod — an 8′ 3w and a 9′ 5w. The Classic Trout is a moderate action fly rod, which can be helpful when fishing with tiny flies for skittish trout. On the other hand, we tend to prefer moderate-fast or fast-action fly rods, so choose the 6-piece Redington Classic Trout if you know you want a moderate action. That said, the Classic Trout rod looks great and has a good price-to-value ratio. It has handy alignment dots on each section, and the rod comes with a divided nylon rod tube. (The model  590-6 is the 6-piece 9′ 5w while the 380-6  is the 8′ 3w.)

To be honest, I don’t own or use travel fly rods myself, however, since I have guided hundreds of traveling clients that have come from as far away as Africa and Australia, some of them bring their travel fly rods so I’ve had plenty of opportunity to cast and fish with some good travel fly rods, and some not so good travel fly rods.

If you are on a budget, the best travel fly rod is the Redington Classic Trout, which sells for about $189, or the Orvis Clearwater Travel Fly Rod for $249, or if you’ve got the cash, the overall best travel fly rod is the Hardy Aydon Travel Fly Rod.

I’ll discuss other travel fly rods from $79.00 to over $500.

To be honest, some of the discount travel rods and the telescopic travel rods I’ve tried really suck! They just don’t load well, which means they cast poorly, and when fishing with them they either feel like a pool cue or are whippy like a wet noodle. What Is A Travel Rod?

Travel rods are like regular fly rods except that they are six or eight pieces, and when they are broken down, they are often less than 20 inches, making them perfect for a suitcase on a plane or for stuffing in a backpack and hiking into a secluded fishing spot.

A travel fishing rod or travel rod uses a lightweight design crafted of graphite or carbon fiber .

Travel rods do not typically come with a reel unless you are buying some of the cheap ones on Amazon. You can find travel rods designed for various applications and weights from three-weight to ten-weight for big salmon.

Although they are called travel fly rods, they can be used anywhere and all the time if you want.

These are my reviews of the top travel fly rods available today, and I’ll let you choose which one best fits your needs.

Common Travel Fly Rod Lengths, Weights, and Pieces

While travel fly rods can reach up to 14 feet in length, those designs remain pretty rate. The typical lengths for these rods range from 8.5 to 10 feet, with the most common lengths including:

What’s the perfect length for a travel fly rod, you ask? Choose fly rods of up to nine feet in length to gain the best accuracy, but if you need greater flexibility or for custom methods, choose a rod of greater than nine feet. Nine feet offers the sweet spot for a fly rod.

Because travel rods are made with more pieces than a two-piece or a four-piece they are slightly heavier. This is due to the ferrules and the extra resins. Many five or six weights are around 3 to 4 ounces on average. However, the actual weight of the rod will depend on how long the rod is and the rod weight rating.

Some of the really cheap Fiberglass fly rods weigh the most, between six and 15 ounces (between 170 and 425 grams), but graphite and composite rods weigh less. Fly rods don’t come imprinted with their ounces or grams weight but you can find that on the manufacturer’s website.

Typically, you use the same line weight as the rod weight rating, so if the manufacturer recommends a weight rating of five, you’ll read a 5wt on the side of the rod or its packaging.

Pro Tip: Rod weight matters a lot. Use a fly rod with a weight of one to four for small trout or panfish or really for any small stream fishing. When fishing in large streams or rivers, use a four to six-weight rod to catch trout and small bass.

If you can only pack one rod for a trout fishing trip, choose a five-weight for its versatility.

Bass, carp, pike, and steelhead fishing requires a six to eight-weight fly rod and line, while large salmon, steelhead, musky, or saltwater fishing requires eight to 10-weight rods.

Fly fishing for big game fish like Tarpon takes the heaviest weight rod and line of 10 to 14.

Pro Tip #2: With any fly rod the sections can come apart when casting. I’ve seen hundreds of rod tips go flying off when casting. With travel rods, there are even more sections that can potentially come off.

To lower the chance of this from happening, when lining up your ferrules, instead of lining them up and then pushing them tight, have them slightly misaligned and then twist them into alignment as you push them together tight. This twisting locks them in place better, and rarely do my rod pieces ever come apart during casting.

Best Travel Fly Rods: All Price Ranges

Now that we’ve covered the common weights, lengths, and pieces, and what sizes are best per species, let’s dive into the greatest depths of fly fishing gear to explore the best travel fly rods.

I’ll cover a variety of rod weights and lengths, so you can find one that suits your needs whether you want to fish the shallows of the Oklahoma River, or the deep waters of the Hudson River, or the Niagara River.

Douglas Upstream Ultra-Lite Fly Rod

I really loved fishing the Douglas Upstream Ultra-lite Fly rod in both the 4-piece and the 6-piece travel rod.

It is super smooth casting and is a light rod that is great for small stream trout and panfish.

This is, as the name implies, a lightweight rod, and it only comes in 2, 3, and 4 weight sizes.

Douglas offers its Upstream Ultra-Lite fly rod in eight lengths, ranging from six feet six inches to eight feet eight inches.

Choose between a simple two-piece fly fishing rod or a more complex six-piece design in this.

Only the six-foot-six-inch rod comes in the two-piece design. The seven feet three inches, eight feet, eight feet three inches, and eight feet eight inches rods come in four pieces. You can get the seven feet, seven feet six inches, and eight feet lengths in a six-piece design.

Every option uses the same bamboo-like handle design made from cork. This rod features spigot ferrules to enhance energy transferability and a sliding ring reel seat to reduce weight.

Every rod comes with a 1 5/8” brushed aluminum rod tube and sock to make packing it easier.

Hardy Aydon Travel Fly Rod

When you want the best medium fast rod action travel rod, try the Hardy Aydon travel fly rod, offering four length options from 3 weight to 10 weight:

This six-piece rod handles line weights of four through 10, depending on the length of the rod. The design combines a cork rod handle with a ceramic guide of lined titanium stripper and a chrome single foot.

The overall rod uses Sintrix multi-modulus carbon fiber, so it weighs less than a fiberglass rod. Some individuals may find this an easier rod to use because of the keyed fly reel seat slide band that doesn’t weigh much.

Depending on the rod length you choose, the design either uses aluminum or wood spacers.

One of my favorite things about the Aydon model rod comes from its packaging. Hardy provides a travel tube that helps keep all of the pieces of the fishing rod together in your backpack or suitcase.

Greys Wing Travel Fly Rod

Okay, I feature this rod, hence the link to another page on this website, so you know I love it.

It’s my favorite when I need a medium-fast rod action. Greys Wing six-piece travel fly rod comes in four lengths, but I recommend the nine-foot length because it offers the greatest versatility in various fishing situations.

Here are all of the length options:

• 11 feet four inches

Depending on the length you choose, you can use a 3wt, 5wt, 8wt, or 9wt line with this six-piece rod.

You get two handle choices – RHW or TPSF. Like most travel rods, this design uses a cork rod handle. Greys Wing’s design features a lined stripper with a stainless steel snake on a Powerlux carbon rod in a grey and red color combination.

Depending on the length of the rod you pick, this design uses either single or double-foot snake guides and either wood or alloy spacers with an alloy fly reel seat. Its reel features dual locking nuts with a nylon cushion ring.

Similar to the Douglas Upstream, it uses a keyed and milled reel seat slide band. I love that Greys Wing makes it easier to safely pack this rod by supplying a hard tube and rod bag for it.

Echo Trip Eight Piece

The other fishing rods reviewed offer a bevy of lengths, but Echo’s Trip travel rod comes apart in eight pieces for truly simple packing.

Each piece measures 15 inches, and its case measures 18 inches. That means you can easily fit it into any suitcase or backpack.

Echo chose to offer its travel fishing rod only in a nine-foot length.

It does offer three versions catering to three line weights: 5wt, 6wt, and 8wt.

By choosing to design this rod in only nine feet, Echo has focused on providing power and fast action for its travel rod.

Orvis Clearwater

You can get excited with the price of the six-piece Clearwater Travel Fly Rod, $249. It is a great rod for that price.

Now, on to its design. This snazzy-looking black chrome rod with white accents features a chrome snake and a stripping guide with a ceramic insert.

The Redington Classic Trout fly rod is specifically designed for trout. Why? It’s in the name.

I have had the opportunity to try this rod a few times, and if I were going to buy a travel fly rod under $200, this would be it.

The Redington Classic Trout Rod comes in four pieces and six pieces.

While all the four-piece rods come in lengths and weights, starting at 7 feet six inches and ranging up to nine feet in length.

The Redington Classic Trout travel rod only has one model, which is a 9 foot 5 weight that comes in 6 pieces to make traveling easier.

This rod’s moderate action works well for all anglers, and it’s good in small creeks, rivers, or from the comfort of your boat.

Because it only weighs 3.1 ounces and offers great flexibility, it provides a superb alternative for a long day of fishing.

Choose from two configurations – a four-piece or a backpack-optimized six-piece. Various fly fish rod lengths work with different line weights. Here’s a quick guide:

• 7 feet six inches, 2wt or 3wt
• 8 feet, 4wt
• 8 feet six inches, 3wt,
• 9 feet, 5wt, 6wt.

As usual, the nine feet in length option offers the greatest versatility in application.

Redington Trailblazer

Another Redington winner is the Redington Trailblazer.

While the Classic Trout specializes in trout fishing, the Trailblazer was made for backpacking and traveling and can work for essentially any fishing situation.

The compact design breaks apart into six pieces and comes in two length options.

Choose either a 7 feet six-inch design that works with a 3wt line for small stream fishing, little tout, and panfish, or a nine feet option that works with a 5wt line for bigger rivers, lake fishing, nymphing and streamer fishing, bigger trout and bass, and any waterway requiring a loner casts.

Redington includes a compact storage tube to help keep all parts safe and organized.

According to the manufacturer, the Trailblazer provides the lightest rod they’ve offered.

Also, if you care about such things, this rod comes in a jaunty red blank streaked with neon green.

Getting down to the mechanics of this rod, it uses single-foot snake guides and an anodized aluminum reel seat, resulting in a travel rod that weighs less but also proves more durable.

M MAXIMUMCATCH Travel Fishing Rod

Best Tavel Fly Rod Under $100

One of my clients had this rod with him, and since I’d seen it on Amazon and since it was very inexpensive, I decided to try it out.

Although the M MAXIMUMCATCH Maxcatch Traveler Fly Fishing Rod casts 40 feet of fly line pretty well, this is still my least favorite of all the rods on this page.

I felt that the rod felt a bit heavy and a bit stiff compared to most rods and my concern is the durability of the rod. It just didn’t feel as good when casting and fishing and when fighting fish.

However, If you are a total beginner or you have a young child who is hard on gear and you don’t want him using a $200 rod, then this is a good option, and that is why I’m recommending it.

It comes in a range of 5 to 8 weight and is only made as a 9-foot rod.

For all practical purposes, a five-weight, nine-foot rod is the industry standard freshwater fly-fishing ensemble. Its versatility provides an infinite fund of success across species and water types. That, plus the fact that rods are implausibly well made these days (with materials originally intended for aerospace design) and packaged with lifetime warranties, means it’s entirely plausible to fish with a single five-weight for the rest of your life.

A rare blend of qualities make a great five-weight. Most crucially, it must cast well in all sorts of conditions with all manner of tackle: you want it to carry dry flies at short distances with feathery precision; shotgun streamers across roiling stretches of water, with sink-tip line if needed; and chuck bass poppers into murky weed beds and extract them like a sword from a stone. The best rods have soft tips and fast action, brawny mid-sections, and sturdy butt-ends to help land fish quickly.

The crux, of course, is price. Of the five-weights reviewed here, the cheapest is $460. But think of it as an investment in your sanity, and also as a measure of what you intend to get out of the sport. You’ll nurture many agonies as a fly fisherman . Best All-Around Rod: Fly-fishing is not a realm that engenders consensus. But everyone I talked to about this rod — from finicky guides to jaded instructors to fly-shop owners who trend towards lifelong contrarians nursing a final, bitter bone of contention — agreed that the NRX LP is a goddamned miracle. Count me among the fanatics. From its strapping power all the way down to the alignment dots on the ferrules, everything about this thing is pure, bottomless joy. The first time I cast the rod it nearly came out of my hands, so stunned I was by its unearthly balance and stately, flush delivery . Its sweet spot seems to be the 50-foot range, while its center is held aloft by a perfect swing-weight that irons-out even an inexpert cast. Lifetime warranty.

Sage One 590-4

Best Wind Rod: Every time I fish with a Sage I’m floored by its voluptuous craftsmanship, by its immaculate surfaces — this one’s a glossy black with a polished walnut reel seat — and by the feeling that I’ve encountered, after years of wandering, my true love . The One 590-4 employs Sage’s new carbon fiber and resin compound — called “Konnetic” technology — which accounts for its slim profile and uncanny light touch. Uncanny because the rod seems to spring-load torque like it’s shooting little pressurized puffs of air with each false-cast, translating into a line-speed that feels like it originated in a pistol — at a mere 2¾ ounces of rod, that’s no mean feat. My single quibble is the near-anorexic case, which admits the rod only after much cursing and wriggling. Lifetime warranty.

Orvis Helios 2

Best Endurance Rod: There’s a sensation that comes over you on the water sometimes, usually in the dusky hours of fatigue, when a rod becomes a totally independent organism operating outside of you. The whoosh and slant of graphite can become possessed, as if an invisible hand were shoving it along. In that vein, the Helios 2 at times follows its own inexorable course, whistling with uncontainable force over the water. This rod, currently the lightest on the market at a scant 2.4-ounces, is also, after the NRX LP, arguably the best. The company’s PR jargon isn’t far off: “The Helios 2 is a featherlight war club that defies the laws of physics and has the backbone of an I-beam.” It’s also the prettiest rod out right now, painted a deep Gulf Stream aqua with a reel seat of “California buckeye burl” that seems stripped straight from the center counsel of Porsche Spyder. 25-year warranty.

St. Croix Legend Elite

Best Mid-Priced Rod: At about half the cost, the Legend Elite runs neck-and-neck with the best on the marketplace, a touch heavier than some but with the same quiet, subtle, enchanting performance you’d expect from one of the best rod manufacturers. With its supple tip, serious mid-section muscle, smooth-as-wax delivery, and trigger-quick action, the Legend Elite is a multifaceted rod that’s terrific close-in and at longer distances. I love the St. Croix “Gallatin green” patina, a shadowy jade that always makes me think of largemouth bass rocketing into the light at dusk. The company’s proprietary “FRS (Fortified Resin System)” adds an extra plane of durability that’s reassuring for the catastrophe-prone. Lifetime warranty.

Scott Radian

Best Distance Rod: The Radian has earned gobs accolades from Field & Stream and Yellowstone Angler , ranking level with the NRX LP in almost every category except short-range. I thought it cast excellently by every measure, though it performed especially well at long range. It felt exceedingly well-balanced, almost weightless, as it swept in tight loops against the wind. I didn’t have to wrestle a lick with the size-6 bass popper I’d stupidly tied on, hoping the Radian would somehow enliven my awkward cast. It did. The rod — the color a kind of faded charcoal — is a beauty to behold, with ferrules trimmed in a Napa sunset orange and a reel seat of speckled ginger with a black aluminum skeleton. I loved everything about the rod except for one thing: it doesn’t come with a case, which is odd for an $800 rod that you’ll surely want to toss in your trunk among the tire irons and wading boots and 10-pound anchors. It does, however, come with a lifetime warranty.

There can be few serious trout fishermen who don’t have a 9ft five-weight rod in their collection. The first-choice on most rivers and chalkstreams, it is versatile enough to be favoured by many stillwater anglers who prefer to fish dry-flies from the bank or boat.

Temple Fork Outfitters Pro II

This is a serious casting machine. Certainly not your traditional 5wt; in fact, it casts more like a 7wt. It has a very fast action and with either line it produced very little flex from anywhere other than the tip. A very powerful rod that can send a line a long way. We felt it lacked the finesse most people would want from a 5wt river rod, but it may have a niche as a small stillwater/big-fish rod, or even as a light-line sea-trout rod on smaller rivers. It would suit either a heavier or longer-bellied line to load it more effectively.

The GR60 has a fast but progressive action with good tip recovery and surprising reserves of power lower in the blank. The line loops and deliveries weren’t quite as pin-point accurate as some, but they were more than adequate for normal fishing conditions. The rods forgiving action would make it a great choice for beginners and improvers. It roll-casts as well as any rod in the test and felt very comfortable in the hand. It handled both lines well, although the spey line loaded the rod a little deeper and showed off the power the rod has throughout the blank. Greys has upped its game in the last few years and this rod offers excellent value for money.

Snowbee Prestige G-SX

The Snowbee has a slim handle and feels light in the hand, as a 5wt should. The action is fast without being stiff, providing good feedback during the cast. Tip recovery is quick, resulting in lovely, stable loops and pin-point accuracy. At home with overhead and spey lines, it performed all casts effortlessly and worked with long and short casting strokes. This rod is a true all-rounder, able to deliver tiny dry-flies to rising fish, swing teams of Spiders or drift weighted nymphs. A very enjoyable and comfortable rod with which to fish, only just squeezed out of our top three.

Guideline Fario NT8

The Fario had a medium action and performed very well with a slower, almost "lazy" casting style. While not quite as accurate at distance as our top three, the tip recovers crisply and delivers nicely shaped loops with both spey and overhead casts. It offers the ideal compromise between the faster- and slower-action rods currently available on the market. In our opinion it would suit an angler looking for a really comfortable, versatile fishing rod to use with a variety of methods. Brian’s favourite saying, which he uses to slow the casting stroke of his pupils, is “Cast like it matters tomorrow” – it suits this rod perfectly.

The first thing that struck us was how light this rod felt in the hand, especially as it was hardly among a group of heavyweights. That lightness flowed through to the cast where a smooth, slightly longer stroke produced lovely loop shapes and precise and accurate deliveries. Tip recovery was very fast, even though we would describe the overall action as medium-fast. The XO suited both lines and casting it was a delight. If you wanted to tighten the loops you could easily do so by adding a small, effortless haul and the line would ping off the tip. After the first few casts we were left with broad smiles on our faces – always a great indicator of a rod’s performance. The Vision was our second-favourite rod in this test.

Scott G Series

The G Series was more of a mid-action rod and although it felt slower when spey casting than many of the rods in the test, it performed well with both longer and shorter casting strokes by virtue of its fast tip recovery. It was accurate and well matched to the spey line, which flexed the rod deeper into the butt while the tip kept loops stable and straight. The extra flex allowed us to slow our casting strokes and let the rod do the work. While the Scott was a nice rod to cast and delivered a sound performance, we felt it needed an experienced caster to work it out and get it to perform at its best.

Orvis Helios 3F

From the first to the last cast the Helios felt light, responsive and effortless to use. Its action is fast but forgiving and the tip so stable that the loops just flow from it without a ripple. We seemed to have all the time in the world to watch them unfurl to a perfectly accurate finish. The different lines, a variety of casts and a range of casting strokes were all taken in its stride. Apply a little power and you can generate high line speeds where required, or slow it down and revel in the seamless, textbook loops.

Winston Pure

This rod had a much slower and more traditional action than most of the others in the test. It required a long, slow casting stroke to keep things smooth as it took a little longer for the rod to transfer energy down the line. The 5wt Gold line worked well in the air, but the rod felt a little overloaded with the spey line. Although it roll-cast well, the tip was not as quick to recover and therefore not as accurate or stable as others in the test. A line size lower in the spey line category would help to crispen the action. The Winston has a high-quality look and almost cane-like feel about it that many traditionalists will enjoy.

Banana Delta X

A very powerful rod that is light in the hand despite the handle feeling a little robust. Both lines felt slightly too light, but the rod still delivered surprisingly effortless casts. The spey line showed off the rods fast tip recovery with good changes of direction and stable loops; however, we felt a slightly heavier line would have improved the roll-casting performance by loading the blank a little deeper. Overhead casts were precise and the rod performed better when a short, but smooth delivery stroke was applied. A little more energy was required to get the best from it than that used with the other rods. The quality finish and fittings are among the best.

MacKenzie NX1

Another excellent performer with a light and responsive feel. It produced clean and efficient line loops requiring little effort or thought from the caster. It preferred a slightly longer casting stroke and yet could cope with a wide range of stroke lengths. It was equally at home with short- and long-range overhead casts; accurate with both. The 5wt spey line felt a little heavy and therefore changing down to a 4wt (of the Rio Spey) is an option that would crispen the rods performance; it coped better once we had slowed our casting stroke. The best MacKenzie single-hander we have tested to date and a real contender.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
