Ideal for small rooms, temporary sleeping arrangements, or outdoor adventures, cot size mattresses offer versatility and convenience. This blog explores everything you need to know about cot size mattresses, from dimensions to maintenance.

What is a Cot Size Mattress?

Understanding the specifics of a cot size mattress is essential for those who need a compact and versatile sleeping solution.

Defining Cot Size Mattress

  • Dimensions: Typically, a cot mattress is narrower and shorter than a standard twin mattress , usually measuring around 75 inches in length and 30 inches in width.
  • Design: Designed for portability and ease of storage, cot mattresses are often thinner than regular mattresses, making them easy to fold or roll.

Common Uses

  • For Guests: Ideal for temporary sleeping arrangements when space is limited.
  • Outdoor Activities: Frequently used for camping due to their portability.
  • Children’s Beds: Sometimes used in children’s rooms for small or transitional spaces.

Cot Mattress Size: Why It Matters

The size of a cot mattress plays a significant role in its functionality and suitability for different environments.

Importance of Cot Mattress Size

Matching Cot Size with Needs

  • Assessing Space Constraints: Ensure the cot mattress fits well in the intended space without overcrowding.
  • Portability Requirements: Consider how easily you can transport and store the cot mattress.

Why Should You Buy a New Cot Mattress?

Selecting the best cot mattress requires considering several factors to ensure comfort, support, and durability.

Factors to Consider

  • Material: Foam, innerspring, and hybrid are common choices. Foam offers cushioning, while innerspring provides more support.
  • Firmness Level: Choose based on personal preference and any specific back or joint support needs.
  • Durability: Look for a mattress that can withstand regular folding and unfolding, especially for camping use.

Tips for Selecting the Right Cot Mattress

  • Read Reviews: Check customer reviews for real-world insights into durability and comfort.
  • Test for Comfort: If possible, test the mattress to ensure it meets your comfort expectations.
  • Consider the Frame: Ensure the mattress is compatible with your cot frame, especially if it’s for a specific cot model.

Best Cot Mattress: How to Choose

Selecting the best cot mattress depends on your specific needs and preferences.

Top Picks and Features

  • Memory Foam Cot Mattresses: Offer superior comfort and body contouring.
  • Innerspring Cot Mattresses: Provide traditional support and durability.
  • Hybrid Cot Mattresses: A combination of foam and innerspring, offering the best of both worlds.

Regular Cleaning Routine

  • Vacuuming: Regularly vacuum the mattress to remove dust and potential allergens.
  • Spot Cleaning: Use a mild detergent solution for spot cleaning any stains. Be sure to dab gently rather than scrub to avoid damaging the material.

Deep Cleaning Methods

  • Baking Soda Treatment: For odor removal, sprinkle baking soda on the mattress, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum it off.
  • Air Drying: Whenever possible, let the mattress air out in a well-ventilated area or in the sunlight to eliminate any lingering odors and prevent mold growth.

Preventative Care

  • Protective Covers: Use a mattress protector to shield against spills and stains.
  • Avoid Moisture: Keep the mattress dry as excessive moisture can lead to mold and mildew, especially in camping environments.

  • Cut the Foam: Measure and cut the foam to fit your cot’s dimensions.
  • Sew the Cover: Create a cover that snugly fits the foam, preferably with a zipper or Velcro for easy removal and washing.

  • Standard Cot Mattress Sizes

Cot mattresses come in various sizes to accommodate different types of cots and cribs. While the exact dimensions may vary slightly between manufacturers and countries, there are some standard cot mattress sizes that are widely recognized.

Here are the most common standard cot mattress sizes:

  • Standard Cot Size: This is the most common size for cot mattresses and typically measures around 60cm x 120cm (24in x 47in). It is suitable for most standard-sized cots and cribs.
  • Compact Cot Size: A compact cot mattress is smaller in size, measuring around 55cm x 110cm (22in x 43in). This size is ideal for smaller or space-saving cots and cribs.
  • Cot Bed Size: Cot beds are larger than standard cots and are designed to be converted into a toddler bed as your child grows. The mattress size for cot beds is typically around 70cm x 140cm (28in x 55in).
  • Travel Cot Size: Travel cots usually have a smaller mattress size compared to standard cots. The dimensions of travel cot mattresses can vary, but they are generally around 60cm x 120cm (24in x 47in) or smaller to ensure portability.

It’s important to note that these are general guidelines, and it’s always recommended to check the specific dimensions of the cot or crib you own to ensure the mattress fits correctly.

Additionally, keep in mind that cot mattress sizes may also vary between regions and countries, so it’s essential to consider the standard sizes in the country you reside in or where the cot was manufactured.

  • Factors to Consider when Choosing a Cot Mattress Size

Choosing the right cot mattress size involves considering various factors to ensure the comfort and safety of your child. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

  • Cot Dimensions: Measure the dimensions of your cot or crib to determine the appropriate mattress size. Check the length, width, and height of the cot to ensure the mattress fits snugly and securely.
  • Age and Development: Consider the age and developmental stage of your child. For newborns and infants, a smaller cot mattress size may be more suitable to provide a cozy and secure sleeping environment. As your child grows, a larger cot bed size may be necessary to accommodate their changing needs.
  • Mattress Thickness: Take into account the thickness of the mattress. A thicker mattress may elevate your child higher in the cot, potentially posing a risk of falling. Ensure that the mattress height is appropriate for the safety of your child.
  • Room Size: Consider the size of the room where the cot will be placed. If you have limited space, opting for a compact cot mattress size can help maximize the available space without compromising on your child’s comfort.
  • Compatibility: Ensure that the selected cot mattress size is compatible with your cot or crib model. Some cots may have specific requirements for mattress dimensions, so it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

It’s worth noting that safety should be the top priority when selecting a cot mattress size. Ensure that the mattress fits securely within the cot without any gaps or spaces that could pose a risk to your child’s safety.

By considering these factors, you can make a well-informed decision and choose a cot mattress size that provides optimal comfort, support, and safety for your little one.

  • Benefits of Choosing the Right Cot Mattress Size

Choosing the right cot mattress size for your child can have several benefits that contribute to their overall comfort, safety, and well-being. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Proper Support: A correctly sized cot mattress provides the necessary support for your child’s body. It ensures that their spine, neck, and limbs are properly aligned, promoting good posture and healthy development.
  • Comfortable Sleeping Environment: When the cot mattress fits snugly within the cot, it eliminates any discomfort caused by gaps or uneven surfaces. Your child can enjoy a restful and peaceful sleep, which is essential for their growth and development.
  • Safety: Choosing the right cot mattress size helps ensure the safety of your child. A mattress that is too small may create gaps between the mattress and the cot rails, increasing the risk of entrapment or suffocation. On the other hand, a mattress that is too large may not fit securely, potentially causing your child to get stuck between the mattress and the cot frame.
  • Longevity and Value for Money: By selecting the appropriate cot mattress size, you can ensure that it will last as your child grows. Investing in a size that accommodates various stages, such as a cot bed mattress, can provide longevity and value for money, eliminating the need to continuously replace the mattress as your child transitions to a larger bed.
  • Ease of Cleaning: A properly sized cot mattress is easier to clean. It fits snugly within the cot, reducing the likelihood of spills and stains reaching the sides of the mattress. This makes cleaning and maintaining hygiene much simpler.

By considering these benefits and choosing the right cot mattress size, you can create an environment that promotes your child’s comfort, safety, and optimal sleep quality. It’s important to prioritize these factors to provide your little one with the best possible sleep experience.

When determining the size of a cot mattress, it’s important to measure the cot frame to ensure a proper fit. Standard cot mattress sizes are typically 120cm x 60cm, but it’s always best to measure to be sure.

  • How to Measure the Size of a Cot Mattress

Measuring the size of a cot mattress is a straightforward process that ensures you choose the correct size for your child’s cot or crib. Here are the steps to measure a cot mattress:

  • Remove the Existing Mattress: Take out the existing mattress from the cot, ensuring the area is clear for accurate measurements.
  • Measure the Length: Using a tape measure, measure the length of the mattress from one end to the other. Start at the head of the mattress and extend the tape measure to the foot, ensuring it follows the contours of the mattress.
  • Measure the Width: Measure the width of the mattress from one side to the other. Start at one edge of the mattress and extend the tape measure to the opposite side, again following the contours of the mattress.
  • Note the Measurements: Take note of the length and width measurements in either centimeters (cm) or inches (in). Make sure to write down the measurements, as you will need them when selecting a new cot mattress.
  • Consider the Depth: While measuring the length and width is essential, it’s also important to consider the depth or thickness of the mattress. Measure the height of the mattress from top to bottom to determine its depth. This measurement may be necessary if you need to find a replacement mattress with similar thickness.

Once you have the accurate measurements of the cot mattress, you can confidently choose a new mattress that fits perfectly and provides the necessary comfort and support for your child.

Remember to double-check the measurements and compare them with the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure the best fit and safety for your child’s cot.

  • Common Cot Mattress Sizes in Different Countries

The dimensions of cot mattresses can vary between countries due to variations in manufacturing standards and cultural preferences. Here are some common cot mattress sizes found in different countries:

  • United Kingdom: In the UK, the standard cot mattress size is generally 60cm x 120cm (24in x 47in). This size is widely used and compatible with most UK cot and crib models.
  • United States: In the US, the standard crib mattress size is usually 28in x 52in (71cm x 132cm). This size is designed to fit standard cribs and is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Australia: In Australia, the standard cot mattress size is typically 70cm x 130cm (27.5in x 51in). This slightly larger size is used to fit most Australian cot and crib designs.
  • Canada: In Canada, the standard crib mattress size is similar to the US, measuring 28in x 52in (71cm x 132cm). This size is commonly used and readily available in Canadian stores.
  • European Union: In the European Union, cot mattress sizes may vary slightly between countries. However, a common size is 60cm x 120cm (24in x 47in), similar to the UK standard size.

These dimensions are general guidelines, and it’s important to check the specific sizing recommendations of the cot or crib you own or plan to purchase. Some countries may have different regulations or manufacturing standards for cot mattresses, so it’s important to ensure compliance with local safety requirements.

When purchasing a cot mattress internationally or online, be sure to verify the measurements in centimeters or inches to ensure compatibility with your cot or crib.

By understanding the common cot mattress sizes in different countries, you can make an informed decision when choosing a suitable mattress for your child’s cot, regardless of your location.

  • Tips for Buying the Perfect Cot Mattress Size

When it comes to buying a cot mattress, selecting the perfect size is essential for your child’s comfort, safety, and overall sleep experience. Here are some helpful tips to consider when purchasing the ideal cot mattress size:

  • Measure the Cot: Before you start shopping for a cot mattress, accurately measure the dimensions of your cot or crib. Measure the length, width, and height to ensure the mattress will fit snugly and securely.
  • Check Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or specifications for recommended mattress sizes for their cot or crib models. This will ensure that you choose a mattress size that meets the specific requirements of the cot.
  • Consider Age and Future Use: Think about the age of your child and how long you anticipate using the cot. If you have a newborn or infant, a smaller cot mattress size may be suitable, but if you plan to use the cot for a longer duration, a larger cot bed size might be more appropriate.
  • Account for Mattress Thickness: Remember to consider the thickness or depth of the mattress when choosing the size. A thicker mattress may elevate your child higher in the cot, potentially posing a safety risk if the cot has low sides or rails.
  • Ensure a Snug Fit: It’s important for the cot mattress to fit securely within the cot without any gaps or spaces around the edges. This ensures your child’s safety and prevents any risk of entrapment.
  • Consider Local Standards: Be aware of any local regulations or safety standards for cot mattresses in your country. Make sure the mattress you choose complies with these standards to ensure the highest level of safety for your child.
  • Read Reviews and Seek Recommendations: Before making a final decision, read reviews from other parents who have purchased the same cot mattress size or seek recommendations from trusted sources. This can provide insights into the comfort, durability, and overall satisfaction with the mattress.
  • Shop from Reputable Retailers: Purchase the cot mattress from reputable retailers or manufacturers to ensure quality and authenticity. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you are investing in a safe and reliable product.

By following these tips, you can confidently choose the perfect cot mattress size that aligns with the dimensions, safety requirements, and future needs of your child’s cot. Remember to prioritize comfort and safety to create the best sleeping environment for your little one.

By prioritizing comfort, support, and the correct fit, you can create the perfect sleeping environment for your child’s cot, promoting healthy sleep habits and overall well-being.

Mamas & Papas Baby Essential Pocket Spring Cot Mattress

With 190 pocket springs encased in a layer of foam, it’s built for comfort and support

Some reviewers say the mattress dents a little

Flat and firm, with a machine-washable cover, this Mamas & Papas mattress offers very high levels of comfort and support for babies and toddlers. A bestseller in various  versions, it comes from a brand that Mumsnetters rate highly for quality, looks and durability.

A design you can flip and rotate to increase its longevity, we love that the cover can be removed for washing, though you’d probably want to add a mattress protector too, just in case. This would also make it easier should you need to do a quick change during the night .

Some reviewers say that they found the mattress dented quite quickly, but it does have  with crush-resistant walls to help it to retain its shape. Overall, this mattress is well-built, well-upholstered and, at 10cm tall, pleasingly thicker than most. It will see your baby through right until they move to their very first kids' bed .

Purflo Breathable Cot Mattress

Expensive – four times the cost of our best budget mattress

Price on writing: £129 | Type : Foam mattress | Materials : Fire-retardant fabric, mesh padded coverings, moulded frames and mattress tube | Size : 140cm x 70cm x 10cm

Mother Nurture Classic Foam Travel Cot Mattress

Added layer for additional comfort

Reviewers report that this mattress is best laid flat if stored in the car boot, which could be an issue depending on the size of your car

Some reviewers noted an initial smell when  new, though it quickly dissipates

Price on writing: From £27 | Type : Foam travel cot mattress | Materials : Dent-resistant nursery foam (60% polypropylene, 40% polyester) and washable hypo-allergenic quilted cover | Size : 95cm x 65cm x 7.5cm

Mother Nurture prides itself on its commitment to use foam that's free from nasty chemicals – so-called organophosphate flame retardants. One of Amazon’s top choices for the best travel cot mattress, this Mother Nurture product has run the gamut of over 5,000 reviews and 64 buyers’ questions, and come out on top.

Suitable for 0 to 48 months and for cots and toddler beds of various sizes, the Mother Nurture Classic Travel Cot Mattress is UK-made by a manufacturer with a 20-year track record. A few reviewers have commented that their babies markedly prefer their Mother Nurture travel cot mattress to their other sleeping arrangements at home. The overall impression is of a well-made, sturdy mattress that's firmer than what you’d typically expect within a travel cot.

Snüz SnüzSurface Duo Cotbed Mattress

Dual sleeping surfaces designed for babies and then toddlers

Waterproof cover

Removable, washable cover

Has to ‘breathe’ for a week before use

Price on writing: £150 | Type : Pocket sprung and foam mattress | Materials : Polyester and polyurethane | Size : 70cm x 140cm x 11cm

Some premium cot mattresses feel like a significant outlay for a relatively short period of use, however the Snüz SnüzSurface Duo is an  exception. Lasting from birth up to around four years of age, it offers excellent value for money, despite it’s initial investment.

A double-sided design, the SnuzSuface Duo has a removable, waterproof and washable cover that makes it easy to keep clean and fresh. The firmer side provides younger babies with the safe level of support they need, while the softer side provides a cosy and comfortable base for your toddler. To change between the two sides, you simply zip off the removable cover and turn the mattress around inside.

Boasting the sort of construction you’d expect to see in a high-end adult mattress, it’s worth noting that this mattress comes vacuum-packed and needs a week to settle and breathe before use. With a layer of supportive pocket springs cushioned between the firm and medium foam layers, customers rave about the level of comfort.

If we had one complaint it would be that this mattress is missing a spare cover, which would be handy in the event of a nighttime accident or spillage. However, you can buy a Snüz Cot Mattress Protector separately for £26.

Silver Cross True Fit Superior Cot Bed Mattress

Dual surface for both babies and toddlers

Perfect fit

No spare cover available

Fairly expensive at usual price

Price on writing : £99 | Type : Hypoallergenic pocket sprung mattress | Materials : Polyester | Size : 70cm x 140cm x 10cm

While the much-loved Silver Cross brand is better known for its iconic prams, it’s now turning out equally iconic cot mattresses, made with 190 pocket springs cushioned between two foam surfaces.

Just like the Snüz Surface Duo Cot Mattress , above, this mattress has two surfaces: the firmer baby surface and, on the other side, a softer surface for when your baby grows into a toddler. It also has a waterproof cover that's removable and washable, like the Snüz - a very practical addition.

The main difference is that this mattress comes in cot bed size only, which we think is a more natural fit for this type of baby-to-toddler option. We also love the addition of True Fit corners, the only mattresses we've seen designed with that have perfectly square corners designed to fit neatly into the cot bed frame. Because of this however, there’s no room for manoeuvre - so do triple-check your measurements.

What’s the best type of cot mattress?

There are many types of cot and cot bed mattresses on the market, and they come with many different styles and features. Broadly speaking, here are the five main types of cot mattresses and cot bed mattresses:

Foam cot mattress – good value for money, and generally lightweight and easy to clean.

Coil spring cot mattress – open coil springs surrounded by foam and fillings. Tends to be sturdier than a typical foam mattress.

Pocket spring mattress – springs that are individually wrapped within a cloth sleeve/ Provides good support, but can be pricey.

Coir cot mattress – manufactured from coconut, latex and wool. Naturally firm and durable.

Hollow-frame (Purflo) cot mattress – advertised as fully breathable and fully washable. It’s basically a mesh cover stretched over an open frame. Expensive.

Because of the wide variety of cot mattresses currently available, they also come in a wide range of prices from as little as £50 right up to several hundred

How do I choose a cot mattress?

There are many elements to consider when choosing the best cot mattress:

Safety – what’s the safest cot mattress?

The safest cot mattress is one that’s firm with no sagging and that follows the relevant safety laws. Your chosen mattress should fit the cot snugly with no gaps for stray fingers or tiny toes to get trapped.

Truthfully, the look of a baby cot mattress should always be secondary to safety. There’s no getting around it. You might like ribbons and frou frou around your four-poster bed, but where a child sleeps should be kept simple and unfussy.

According to the National Childbirth Trust , British Safety Standards are your friend and you should specifically look for products conforming to them. Horrible as it is to even think of such a thing, these protocols are in place to reduce the number of accidental infant deaths that occur each year due to strangulation or suffocation.

It’s non-negotiable – whatever you buy, look out for the British Standards’ number on swing tickets and product specifications. Which? recommendations on this state: “All mattresses should have the BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 number on the labelling or instructions. It's preferable if it also carries BS 7177:1996 and BS EN 16890:2017 + A1:2021.”

Comfort and safe sleeping

‘Firm and flat’ is your mantra when it comes to cot mattresses. Both the centre and the edges should yield slightly and then spring back into shape when you apply pressure to the surface and then release it.

The general rule of thumb for safe sleeping is to always place your baby to sleep on their back – even if you own a breathable crib mattress. Though mattress manufacturers try to consider babies who roll onto their tummies during sleep, virtually all health professionals advise that back sleeping is safest.

Besides suffocation risk, some studies claim that there's an additional danger from babies breathing in more carbon dioxide than oxygen when they are not sleeping on their backs.

The mattress should also fit the cot snugly, with no gaps that your baby’s limbs could get stuck in - any gaps should be no more than 3cm. In addition, the NCT recommends that, when the mattress is in position, there’s a minimum 50cm clearance to the height of the cot to prevent a mobile baby from climbing out.

Many mattresses have breathable covers, which helps to ensure air is flowing freely and that your baby won’t overheat. You can help keep your baby at the right temperature in the night by investing in good quality cotton bedding ( baby sleeping bags are the easiest) and ensuring that they are always put on their back to sleep, with her arms free. The Lullaby Trust has good advice on safer sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Durability and cleaning

Whether you’re buying a cot mattress, a travel cot mattress or a cot bed mattress, you must make sure that, as a minimum, it’s protected by a waterproof cover to help keep the mattress clean and dry.

The overwhelming testimony of Mumsnetters is that removable, washable zip-on covers are a must. Not only do they allow you to change bedding quickly when accidents occur, but they also prolong the life of your mattress.

This does make them more expensive, however, so if you’re going for a budget model and it doesn’t have a removable cover, it would be well worth buying a separate protective cover for it.

Eco-credentials

There’s no getting around it. Cot mattresses aren’t a buy for life, so lots will end up in landfill. But if you’re fully committed to a green-friendly solution, be careful to read the small print.

While producers such as The Little Green Sheep (see their Twist cot bed mattress above) are admirably transparent, the consumer organisation Which? believes that others play fast and loose with terminology. They say: "Manufacturers can use the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ on products without needing any sort of certification. There are legal requirements for the labelling of organic foods, but not these products.”

Their advice, and ours, is to scrutinise the small print of product specs to ensure that the materials used are truly what they purport to be.

In a sector where a mattress that broadly fulfils the same function can retail from £20 to over £250, getting what you pay for isn’t necessarily a given.

As a rough guide, foam mattresses are cheap and cheerful and not especially hardwearing, but that might be no bad thing if you’re planning to replace them when those little night accidents come to an end.

Spring-interior mattresses are mini versions of typical adult mattresses and coir and Purflo mattresses are part of a subset of innovative, premium-priced ‘green’ products.

If you’re going for a more premium brand, you might want to think about its longevity. Some mattresses will last a child up to four years of age, such as the Snüz Surface Duo Cot Mattress and the Silver Cross True Fit Superior Cot Bed Mattress that we’ve featured in our round-up, so suddenly a slightly hefty price tag doesn’t seem so bad.

Are secondhand cot mattresses safe?

Secondhand mattresses are best avoided – if only because the links between passed-on mattresses and cot death can neither be confirmed nor refuted. In 2002, a BBC story said that researchers at The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow claimed to have found a "significant” link between having a secondhand mattress and a risk of cot death. No causation was established, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

The Lullaby Trust charity, set up to provide expert advice on safer baby sleep and to raise awareness of SIDs, also cautions risk. They say: “If you’re using a secondhand mattress, make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely.” For little brothers and sisters moving onto an elder sibling’s mattress, make sure that you also do these checks.

You should also ensure that the mattress fits well, with no gaps between the mattress and the cot, and that the mattress itself is both clean and dry.

What size should a cot mattress be?

What’s important is that your mattress fits your cot snugly, with no gaps anywhere, so measure twice before you order. The standard size for a cot is 120cm x 60cm and 140cm x 70cm for a cot bed. However, some cots are now oval or even round, so if yours isn’t standard you might need to buy the mattress that's designed to go with it or get one custom-made.

What is the best thickness for a cot mattress?

For support, your choice of cot mattress should be no thinner than 8cm. However, a minimum of 10cm is what most experts, including Which? , recommend.

Travel cot mattresses tend to be much thinner - sometimes only around 5cm - but they aren’t intended for regular use. You can replace your travel cot mattress with a thicker version but do check that it fits exactly or is designed specifically for your travel cot.

Never be tempted to add a pillow or blankets to make it feel softer or thicker as this is unsafe. And if you add a thicker mattress, do check that there is still 50cm from the top of the mattress to the top of the side of the cot.

How do I test that my cot mattress is firm enough?

It’s very important that a baby’s mattress is firm. It’s necessary for their skeletal development and also is vital in ensuring their safety while sleeping. Before you buy, search online to check the mattress hasn’t been recalled and that there are no other problems with it. When it arrives, check the following:

Run your hand across the top surface of the mattress. It should be completely flat, with no bumps, dips or bunched-up bits.

Press with both hands on various spots on the surface of the mattress. When you remove your hands, there should be no indentation remaining. The mattress should spring back immediately.

Again, using both hands, press all around the edges, checking that the edges are all strong and stable and that they don’t collapse and can’t be pushed in on themselves. Take special care to check this at the corners.

How long does a cot mattress last?

The average lifespan of a cot mattress is anything between 0 to 48 months. After that point, it's time to move into a big kid's bed. The best practice is to always buy a new cot mattress for each child.

How do I clean a cot mattress?

Your mattress should come with instructions on how to clean it, so read these carefully. Be especially careful not to shrink the cover, if it has one, as this may lead to it compressing the mattress, creating gaps around the outside.

But essentially, if you want to give the mattress a thorough clean, first remove the cover, wash it according to the instructions and ensure it is thoroughly dry. Some mattresses can be washed themselves, but most are wipe-clean at best.

Vacuum all surfaces of the mattress, paying particular attention to anywhere dust might gather. Then wipe it all over with a damp cloth. If you have a spill to deal with, check the label to see if you can use a little laundry detergent too, then leave the mattress standing on one side to dry thoroughly - outside if possible.

Do I need to flip my baby's cot mattress?

It’s a good idea to rotate your baby’s mattress 180 degrees every month or so, just so that it wears evenly. Most mattresses these days don’t flip.

Some have a special surface for sleeping on that might be water-repellent or hypoallergenic, for example, so that needs to stay on top. Others, such as the Snüz Surface Duo Cot Mattress and the Silver Cross True Fit Superior Cot Bed Mattress above, have a ‘baby’ side and a ‘toddler’ side with differing levels of firmness.

Either way, the care instructions that came with the mattress should tell you all you need to know.

Do I need a mattress protector for my cot mattress?

A cot mattress protector is a very good idea, yes. If a nappy overflows in the night and urine soaks into the mattress, this can cause bacteria to develop inside.

Some mattresses come with a removable, washable cover, which is great, but it’s still worth buying a protector to pop on as a spare, in case the cover has to be washed suddenly. A cover will also help to prevent dust mites and other allergens from building up.

What is the best cot mattress/ cot bed mattress in the UK?

From a very wide field, we picked the Tutti Bambini Sprung Cot Mattress as the best mattress for a baby's cot. Available in a larger cot bed size too, this mid-priced mattress has all the features you'd expect to find in a much more expensive mattress. it provides excellent ventillation, is allergy-safe and Mumsnetters love it for cots as well as travel cots .

Best Travel Cot Mattress 2022

Daniella

Written by Daniella

Travelling with babies and toddlers is challenging for most - from all the extra items that need to be brought along to disrupted routines. Lack of sleep is the last thing mum, dad, or baby needs. Travel Cot Mattress Considerations

Whilst travelling, you’ll want to keep your baby in their usual routine as much as possible. Whilst certain factors will be beyond your control, there are certain things you can do to minimise stress for your baby - as well as yourself. Because sleep is so important for your baby, it’s essential to have them as safe and comfortable as they are on their usual home cot bed mattress - and their mattress away from home should be as similar as possible. Here are some essential points to consider when searching for the best travel cot mattress.

Travel Cot Mattress Considerations

It is widely accepted that a firmer mattress is most suitable for infants - a  survey✓   including over 3000 paediatricians and family physicians showed that almost all would recommend a firmer sleep surface for infants, most likely due to the risk of  SIDS✓  (more on this later).

However, when babies become toddlers, their needs will change, and a softer or medium-firm mattress may be more suitable. Should you be unsure when is the right time to make the switch, best to ask your paediatrician or family doctor.

The UK standard size for a baby cot mattress is 120x60cm; however, travel cot mattresses vary in size and are often smaller than this, and it is always best to measure the travel cot to be sure. There should be little to no space (less than 2cm) around the sides to prevent the infant from getting stuck. There should also be a distance of at least 50cm between the top of the mattress and the top of the cot, so be sure to check the thickness, which can vary between brands due to different designs and construction.

For practical reasons, a lighter, more compact mattress will most likely be more suitable for travel than one that’s heavy and bulkier.

Travel cot mattress materials should be durable and firm enough to avoid sagging. Waterproof and water-resistant materials may also be a good idea to help keep the mattress clean. In addition, hypoallergenic and breathable materials are a good option if you have concerns about allergens or temperature for your baby.

Eco-friendly mattresses are growing in popularity because, in addition to being more environmentally friendly, they are less likely to release any harmful substances or VOC’s, which have been  shown✓  to be elevated in some cot foam mattresses .

Travel cot mattresses may be subject to a little more wear and tear than ordinary cot mattresses just due to the fact they are packed, transported and unpacked more regularly. Choosing a travel cot mattress that is more durable may save you needing to replace yours sooner than expected. Some brands offer double-sided mattresses, which can increase their lifespan.

Ease Of Transportation

Some travel cot mattresses are designed and constructed to be foldable, which could make transportation and storage easier when not in use. In addition, manufacturers often include handy carry bags for these types.

Care Instructions

Although travel cot mattress covers are often removable and machine-washable, be sure to check this as it may not be an option or easy to manage whilst travelling. Tumble drying may also not be possible for some.

Travel Cot Mattress Types

The materials used in a travel cot mattress can alter the firmness and comfort, which can both be key in ensuring your infant has a safe and comfortable sleep. Below are two of the most commonly found travel cot mattress types. What is best will vary according to your preferences and your infant's needs.

Travel Cot Mattress Types

  • Pocket Sprung/Coil & Hybrid: Pocket sprung/coil mattresses typically consist of layers of springs or coils with thin layers of foam, and hybrid mattresses generally have a balance of foam and springs. These mattress types can offer durability and good firmness, which is recommended for infants. They can also provide increased breathability due to the airflow throughout the springs or coils.
  • Foam: Typically made from polyurethane foam, also known as polyfoam or memory foam, these travel cot mattress types usually range from medium to firm. A firmer sleep surface is generally recommended for young infants, so it’s always advisable to check that there is no sinking or contouring, particularly around the infant’s head.

It's worth noting that you may have some options for the covers on travel cot mattresses. Some brands offer more natural material options- like cotton or latex, which are advertised as more breathable and hypoallergenic fabrics. While this is true for many organic materials, always read the labels and not be swayed by clever marketing.

Why Sleep Is So Important For Infants

Sleep is essential for optimal cognitive and physical growth. In infants, sleep is a highly dynamic process which means the brain is very active - building important connections and foundations for our overall growth.

Why Sleep Is So Important For Infants

Infant sleep is related to our  social-emotional development✓ , cognition and physical growth, and even our  immune system✓ . Insufficient sleep in infants has been  associated✓  with attention, behaviour, and learning problems and linked to obesity, hypertension, and diabetes later in childhood.

The importance of infant sleep should not be underestimated, whether at home or travelling. Infants can be very attached to their routine and schedules, which makes maintaining their bedding set up an important factor. The correct travel cot mattress can be a significant factor in keeping the bedding set up as close to home as possible.

Did you know? A study✓  investigating cross-cultural sleep patterns and sleep problems showed that children ages birth to 36 months from predominantly-Asian countries had significantly later bedtimes, shorter total sleep times than children from predominantly-Caucasian countries.

The recommended sleep durations, according to the National Sleep Foundation✓ for nine different age groups are as follows:

A Note On SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is described as the sudden and unexpected death of a baby less than 1-year of age. Although SIDS is rare and relatively low-risk✓ , it is useful to understand how it is caused and measures we can take to avoid it.

A Note On SIDS

Interesting to know... Research✓ in the UK has shown boys to be more at risk of SIDS than girls.

The exact cause of SIDS is unknown; however,  evidence shows✓  a combination of external triggers (such as sleep position or blocked airway), a critical development period, and immature/dysfunctional cardiorespiratory and /or arousal systems lead to the failure of protective responses. If these factors "occur" at the same time, it may lead to a combination of lack of blood flow to the brain, slowed heart rate, lowered blood pressure, metabolic issues, and death.

Simply put,  SIDS may result from the combination✓  of a vulnerable infant and a potentially dangerous sleep environment - highlighting the importance of a safe home cot and travel cot mattress.

Good to know! After the launch of many public health campaigns to promote back sleeping position for infants ✓ , dramatic decreases in SIDS in all participating countries were observed.

Jet Lag In Infants

The Journal Of Travel Medicine states✓ that jet lag has been reported as less of an issue in young travellers because of their “ adherence to natural circadian rhythms✓ ”. However, they do go on to state that infants and children who are used to a specific sleeping schedule may experience difficulty in adjusting to a new sleep cycle - something to which I’m sure many parents will attest.

Jet Lag In Infants

A quick look online will tell you, “yes, babies definitely do get jet lag”, and, ultimately, whether we refer to it as jet lag or not, there are a few things we can do to minimise the adjustment period.

  • When, and if possible, travelling during the day and when they are usually awake is always helpful.
  • Adjusting sleep and meal patterns as best as possible during travel and arrival at the destination - setting your watch to the destination time zone is a good idea.
  • Its often recommended to gradually shift an infant’s or toddler’s sleep schedule 2 or 3 days before travel.
  • Exposure to the sun (or bright lights) in the morning when travelling east and in the afternoon when travelling west.
  • Hydrate with fluids - air in aeroplane cabins can be dry - staying hydrated will make everyone feel better.
  • Scheduling more relaxed, less busy days soon after your arrival is advised to give everyone time to adjust.
  • Familiar toys from home and a safe and comfortable travel cot mattress will aid in helping your infant to feel relaxed, content, and secure.

What size is a travel cot mattress?

Travel cot mattresses vary in size and are often smaller than the standard UK cot size mattress ( 120x60cm). It is always best to measure the travel cot to be sure - different brands offer various sizes.

How to clean a travel cot mattress?

Different mattresses will have different care instructions - many have removable, machine-washable covers, some can be tumble-dried. Always be sure to check the washing instructions before.

How thick should a travel cot mattress be?

Travel cot mattresses are often thinner (from 4cm upwards) than regular cot mattresses to facilitate easy folding and transportation. This is fine for an infant provided the mattress is offering sufficient firmness.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

travel cot mattress size

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
