WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

Best Alaska Smoked Salmon

Fresh-caught wild salmon is served up at backyard BBQs and the finest restaurants. For something different, try the sweet and savory treat Indian Candy, salmon that is sweetened and smoked till hard.

SOURDOUGH WON'T LET YOU GO

Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

Alaskan Wild Berries Pie Dessert

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavor. Whether served up in jams, candies, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

RELATED PORTS

Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state. Denali National Park takes you out of the city altogether, into a wilderness full of spruce forests and snow-capped mountain peaks.

An Expert's Guide to Booking the Perfect Alaska Cruise in 2023

By Scott Laird

Alaska Cruise 2023 An Expert's Guide to Booking the Perfect Voyage to Suit Your Travel Style

Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions.

What looks like an endless buffet of choice can lead to analysis paralysis for many first-time Alaska visitors—even if they’re veteran cruisers who have already figured out big questions like their preferred cruise line or favorite ship class.

Here are five questions to consider in order to find the best Alaska cruise for you.

When is The Best Time to Book?

Alaska is a popular destination for multi-generational groups . Any large group booking multiple cabins or needing more than a pair of spots on shore excursions should start thinking about booking Alaska cruises about a year in advance to secure the best availability for their group size. So too should travelers who have specific non-negotiables on things like stateroom category, ship, or itinerary.

However, that doesn’t mean that last-minute bookers are out of luck. While popular itineraries and cabin categories have a tendency to sell out early (balcony accommodations are particularly sought after for scenic Inside Passage cruising), there’s still often enough inventory left for cruise lines to offer enticing deals for the summer during the “wave” booking season from January through March. They’ll even offer last-minute specials right up until the time of sailing, but selection will be limited and the most popular shore excursions will have long wait lists.

Cruise lines offer enticing deals for the summer during “wavequot season from January through March.

Cruise lines offer enticing deals for the summer during “wave" season from January through March.

Is it better to cruise one-way or roundtrip?

Like almost any choice one makes when booking a cruise, it all comes down to personal taste. Roundtrip cruises offer the convenience of embarking and disembarking at the same port (typically Seattle, Vancouver, or San Francisco), but itineraries are generally limited to Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage.

Visitors wanting to see Alaska’s Interior, Fairbanks, and Denali National Park , should book a one-way cruise to or from Anchorage (which is served by the cruise ports at Whittier and Seward) for land-based touring either before or after their Inside Passage cruise. Many cruise lines, including Holland America Line , Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity offer fully packaged “Cruisetours” that combine a one-way Inside Passage cruise with a rail or motor coach itinerary mainly focused on Denali, but also offering journeys to other parts of Southcentral Alaska.

Is Seward or Whittier a better port for Anchorage?

Each cruise line has their preferred port—Holland America Line and Princess Cruises berth at Whittier. Norwegian, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas—currently berthing at Seward—will move operations to Whittier upon completion of berths currently under construction. Most other one-way cruises berth in Seward.

Whittier is closer to Anchorage, and some itineraries even take disembarking passengers directly to Denali or Talkeetna the same day. Whittier is also a convenient port for cruising College Fjord, which most northbound sailings do on the final day before arriving in Whittier. Whittier is, however, a tiny community that is little more than a deep-water port, while Seward is a larger community and regional base for a more diverse collection of tours and activities.

Seward is farther from Anchorage, but the train or coach ride is roughly an extra hour of travel through a spectacular mountain pass on the Kenai Peninsula, then the lines merge near Whittier and the last hour of the journey is the same, hugging the Chugach Mountains alongside Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage.

It’s worth noting that shoreside transportation outside of cruise line-operated transfers can be more limited in Whittier, so passengers embarking there may wish to ensure they include transfers from Anchorage in their cruise package. From Seward, travelers wanting to spend a few days exploring Kenai Fjords National Park or one of the wilderness lodges can book Alaska Railroad transfers on their regular scheduled service.

I've been to Alaska before—how can I cruise differently?

Cruisers who are veterans at Inside Passage itineraries on the big ships have really only seen a preview of the nooks and crannies of the region. Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises operates small-ship sailings from Sitka, getting into the straits and narrows that the big ships won’t fit, and oftentimes determining itineraries by reports of sea life migrations and weather conditions.

Return visitors who still want that big ship experience might try a different category of cruise line. The major operators—Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, are all premium-tier cruise lines, but the luxury cruise lines have also deployed ships to Alaskan waters.

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth is operating roundtrip Vancouver sailings, bringing onboard topflight lecturers ranging from adventure traveler Bear Grylls to undersea archaeologist Mensun Bound on select voyages. On every voyage, guests will find guides from Alaska Native Voices, sharing the cultural history and lore of the local Huna people to  Sit’ Eeti Gheeyi  (Glacier Bay National Park), and guest speakers from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

Silversea has “Door-to-Door” pricing on many of its Alaska cruises , meaning the cruise fare includes airfare, hotels, and all transfers—including transfers from home to the departure airport. Onboard the all-suite ships, there’s butler service in every suite, fine dining, and select shore excursions included. The largest Silversea ship sailing to Alaska also carries just under 600 guests, allowing for port calls at lesser-visited stops like Wrangell, Haines, and Valdez.

Are there less-crowded alternatives?

Hurtigruten, the Norwegian expedition cruise line, offers sailings between Vancouver and Nome , hitting not only the lesser-visited spots on the Inside Passage, but also the virtually untouristed and volcano-dotted Alaska Peninsula, where guests can spot Brown Bears in Katmai National Park, go bird-watching in St. Paul Island and uninhabited St. Matthew Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and explore the eerie ghost town of Unga.

Closer afield, but no less secluded is the Prince William Sound Explorer from Uncruise, where guests will depart Whittier and wake up among the glaciers of little-visited Icy Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Much of the itinerary is “Captain’s choice” based on conditions and sealife movements, but the massive Columbia and Meares glaciers and the Sound communities of Cordova and Valdez—also off the big ship routes—hold prized spots on the itinerary.

Alaska Glaciers

One of the biggest reasons people visit.

Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Hubbard Glacier

Two men taking a photos of hubbard glacier on Alaska cruise

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Millions of Americans are by now eagerly awaiting the next total solar eclipse , which is only hours away from passing over a large swath of the continent .

But when the celestial event comes and goes, the awe-inspiring impression it leaves on skygazers may leave them with one question: "When can we see that again?"

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait awhile – this sort of spectacular astral phenomenon doesn't happen very often . Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse that will cross over the contiguous U.S.

Solar eclipse glasses: What to know about glasses, safe viewing before the solar eclipse

When will the next total solar eclipse happen in the U.S?

Only seven years have passed since Americans had the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse, a relatively rare celestial event in which the moon appears to us here on Earth to completely block the sun.

The resulting fleeting moments of darkness can last for minutes or just mere seconds and is known as " totality ," whereby the sun's outermost layer known as the corona makes a rare appearance.

Today's total solar eclipse , the first in North America since 2017, will travel over portions of northern Mexico, thousands of miles of the U.S. and the maritime provinces of Canada, according to NASA . According to astronomers, this eclipse will be brighter, will last longer and will be visible to more people than the last one in North America.

It's also the last one for 20 years in the United States.

After Monday, the next total solar eclipse viewable from the lower 48 states will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Compared to this year's eclipse, with a path of totality that will cross over 13 states, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have as quite as broad of a reach .

The Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy, says that during the 2044 eclipse, the path of totality will only touch three states.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

It's not too early to start thinking about where you want to witness it. According to whenisthenexteclipse.com , Americans may want to make sure their passports up to date.

The place to be will likely be Banff National Park in Alberta and Jasper National Park , with Calgary and Edmonton also within the path of totality.

What to know about the 2033 eclipse in Alaska

Outside of the "lower 48," Alaska is set to experience a total solar eclipse much sooner.

On March 30, 2033, a total solar eclipse will occur in Russia and cross over Alaska, according to nationaleclipse.com . The maximum duration of totality for this eclipse will be 2 minutes and 37 seconds.

Alaska to Have Record Cruise Capacity in 2024

  • April 10, 2024

Princess ship in Alaska

According to new 2024 Cruise Industry News Annual Report , the Alaska cruise market is expected to have a record-breaking season in 2024.

Following a strong season in 2023, the capacity for the region, which includes destinations in the United States and Canada, is set to increase by one percent.

Princess Cruises remains the leader in capacity in Alaska, with a total of seven ships sailing from four different homeports .

The Alaska fleet includes the 2022-built Discovery Princess, one of the newest and biggest vessels sailing for the Carnival Corporation-owned premium brand.

Sailing roundtrip from Seattle, the 3,660-guest ship is set to offer seven-night cruises to Alaska and Canada from early May to late September.

The regular itinerary of the Discovery Princess in the region includes visits to Victoria, Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising at Glacier Bay National Park.

The Majestic Princess, the Royal Princess, the Ruby Princess, the Crown Princess, the Sapphire Princess and the Grand Princess are also scheduled to sail in Alaska this summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International, which operate some of the largest cruise ships in the destination, are also planning strong programs in Alaska in 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line will dedicate four vessels to the region, including its two largest ships, the Norwegian Encore and the Norwegian Bliss.

Built between 2018 and 2019, each of the vessels can accommodate up to 4,200 guests at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean International is also deploying four ships in Alaska this summer. The lineup includes the two Quantum-Class vessels, the Quantum of the Seas and the Ovation of the Seas, which have capacity for 4,100 passengers.

Cruise Industry News ’ independent research also shows that Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line will also be key players in the Alaska market for2024.

26-year Anchorage police veteran set to be first woman to lead the department

cruises in alaska august 2023

Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson on Tuesday named Bianca Cross as the next police chief, which will make her the first woman to head the Anchorage Police Department in the city’s history.

Cross, a 26-year veteran of the department, brings “a wealth of knowledge, expertise and a deep commitment to community policing,” Bronson said at a news conference at City Hall.

Cross currently serves as captain over the police department’s Detective Division. She said she was committed to leading the department with “compassion, inclusivity and transparency.”

She will replace Michael Kerle, who has been chief since 2021 . She is expected to assume the role of chief designee April 30, when Kerle retires — just before Bronson will go up against Suzanne LaFrance, his mayoral election opponent, in a runoff election in May. The timing means LaFrance, if elected, could inherit a police chief freshly appointed by Bronson.

Bronson insisted the timing of Kerle’s retirement was not political. Kerle, he said, had scheduled a vacation that made the previous plan to retire July 1 — with the election resolved — not possible.

“Chief Kerle is going on a cruise,” Bronson said. “You can’t have a department without a police chief.”

Cross must first be confirmed as chief of police by a majority vote of the Anchorage Assembly before taking the position permanently. Bronson did not say exactly when he would request the Assembly to confirm Cross but noted that the Assembly has rejected some of his executive appointments in the past.

However, Bronson said, “We anticipate this one to be pretty quick.”

Bronson said he chose Cross due to her “aptitude and resume” and said he’d spoken with officers about who would make a strong successor to Kerle.

“I went to rank-and-file police officers, and I said, ‘Hey, you know, someday, who would make a good police chief?’ And her name always kept coming to the top,” Bronson said.

Cross is a Service High School graduate and said she worked in the insurance industry before discovering she loved the teamwork of policing on a ride-along with the department.

“That night, they had an emergency situation. They had someone who ended up holed in an apartment with a gun, threatening other people. And really, it was the teamwork. It was the — everybody dropped what they were doing and (had) come to the scene to help that officer, those officers. That was the icing on the cake for me. I liked the teamwork. I like the collaboration, and the fact that everybody came to someone else’s rescue is appealing,” Cross said.

In her 26 years with the department, Cross has worked mostly in the detective unit, investigating violent crimes, sexual assaults and supervising units including homicides. She has also been a crisis negotiator and instructor. She was named captain overseeing the police department’s Detective Division in August.

Her priority for the department is to focus on the transition from Kerle’s retirement to her tenure as chief, she said.

“We have issues with homelessness and crime in the city. So we’ll stick with the basics initially, and then we will work our way through and find a plan for everything else,” she said.

When asked whether APD’s deputy chief, Sean Case, would remain in the second-in-command position, Bronson said “Those announcements will be made later.”

”Bianca and I will be making those decisions,” Bronson said.

In a terse statement, the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association union said it was blindsided by the announcement.

“Until today, the APDEA was unaware of the appointment of Bianca Cross as Designee Police Chief,” the union’s president, Sgt. Darrell Evans, wrote in a statement. “Chief Kerle’s planned retirement comes right in the middle of a runoff election for Mayor. The mayor did not discuss any of these command changes with the APDEA, the representative for the 500+ rank-and-file employees who are continuing to fulfill our community’s law enforcement needs as best they can during a time of unprecedented staffing woes.”

The union “would like to see better communication from the Mayor’s Office and at least have a seat at the table for the discussion,” the statement said.

Of 630 positions authorized within the department, APD has 117 vacancies — including 82 vacant sworn officer positions — though 30 vacancies are set to be filled by new hires currently in training, according to an April 1 staffing report.

In an interview Tuesday, LaFrance said she is grateful to Kerle for his many years of service to the community.

“Congratulations to Captain Cross,” LaFrance added.

LaFrance also criticized Bronson for what she said is a lack of a plan from the mayor to fill vacancies in the police department. LaFrance acknowledged that it’s unusual for a mayor to make this sort of leadership change a few weeks out from an election.

“It’s not totally surprising,” she said. “It’s more of the same from Dave Bronson: election-time distractions and then no plan or process on the big issues we’re facing like this severe staffing crisis at APD.”

Asked about the timing of the announcement, Bronson told reporters Tuesday: “There is no agenda. The chief told me in December he’s going to retire and there’s a cruise involved on this — a month-long cruise, so this was planned on his part.”

“The politics don’t figure into this,” Bronson said.

Asked whether she would keep Cross as chief of police if elected mayor, LaFrance said she will “make that determination when it’s time.”

“I’m committed to a thoughtful, intentional transition and hiring of the most qualified people for the job,” LaFrance said. “So I’ll be watching this process closely and to see if the Assembly confirms (Cross).”

Assembly Chair Christopher Constant voiced some skepticism over the appointment.

“We haven’t been briefed on her qualifications,” he said, noting she had been in the position of captain for less than a year. “... I look forward to learning more about her qualifications to run a $120 million organization.”

“I’m baffled by the mayor’s timing,” Constant added.

Voters are about to decide whether to replace Bronson, he said. The mayor has been in second place, behind LaFrance, in the regular election’s preliminary vote counts, while Anchorage’s last three incumbent mayors handily won reelection and avoided a runoff.

“To sum it up, I have a lot of questions,” he said.

Biologists describe freeing Unalaska whale from ‘life-threatening entanglement’

a boat

On April 1, a young humpback whale was found tied up in what was likely fishing line and anchored down in a busy area in Iliuliuk Bay. Four days later, a group of whale entanglement experts carefully cut the line wrapped around the humpback’s mouth and tail.

Ed Lyman, an entanglement response coordinator for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, thinks the whale was a two-year-old male who got hogtied while feeding in the area.

“(He) gets the line wrapped up in the mouth, panics, and twirls up,” Lyman said. “Suddenly, he’s got it on his tail as well — between the mouth and tail.”

It is unclear what type of fishing gear weighed down the 30-foot whale, but it gave enough slack for him to come up for air.

Lyman said the rescue process takes time. He has participated in 120 whale entanglements and said even though entanglements can be life-threatening for whales, they are not an immediate threat. He said whales are large animals, and disentangling can be deadly if not done carefully.

a whale

“So they have time on their side; we have time on our side,” Lyman said. “I’ve never been involved in entanglement where the animals died in a day or two.”

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Dutch Harbor received a call about the entangled whale from locals who noticed that the humpback was breathing and unable to move freely.

It was then reported to marine traffic in the area. The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska and the nonprofit organization Marine Exchange of Alaska posted a digital map displaying the entangled humpback, warning vessels entering the harbor to avoid the hazard.

Asia Beder, the state’s assistant area management biologist for Dutch Harbor, appreciated the patience shown by the community of Unalaska. She says it played a vital role in the successful rescue of the humpback whale.

“I know this was a very emotional story and event for the community,” she said. “By giving us reports, keeping the distance, and allowing us time, I think that created this into a success story.”

Local ADFG staff received expert advice on capturing footage of the whale entanglement using a camera attached to a pole. They said it helped whale experts determine specialized tools required for the rescue operation.

Sadie Wright, a large-whale entanglement response coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is based in Juneau and has participated in 15 whale entanglements. She said whales can sometimes free themselves from entanglements. However, based on the photos and reports collected from the Unalaska community, it was clear that this whale needed help.

“It was a life-threatening entanglement, and we determined it needed an advanced response,” she said. “So reporting is essential.”

The actual rescue took two days. On a boat, local Fish and Game biologists and visiting whale experts gathered data from specialized tools. They floated around the whale and sometimes over it. The team used a large pole with a hook knife at the end of it, and a camera attached, so they could see in real time where the knife was cutting the rope underwater.

“We knew which line we wanted to cut first, and then second, to try to encourage the rope to then come off by itself to slide off the animal,” Wright said, “which eventually happened.”

a whale

Lyman said the whale cooperated during the rescue and even seemed curious at times.

“It would almost rise up a little bit more and lean over a little bit,” he said. “Like, ‘What are you guys doing? Why are you here?’ You know, that kind of thing.”

After the whale was cut loose, the team followed it out of the bay and into the Bering Sea. They said the whale looked good and was swimming normally. Once it got further out, it picked up some speed and took a nice deep dive. Lyman said there’s a good chance the humpback will be fine.

“You know, I would almost bet on it, and I’m not a betting man,” he said.

The whale rescue team recommends not putting unnecessary objects in the water and reducing the use of floating lines to prevent whale entanglements.

The young humpback whale is currently identifiable with a string-like mark on its dorsal fin, which the team thinks is from when the whale was trying to break free from the gear.
