If you're traveling light and looking to save a few bucks, check out Skiplagged. It's a neat app that can keep your travel costs down by taking advantage of "hidden city flights", where flyers get off at a layover, instead of at the final destination. 

Enter your origin and destination, and Skiplagged will show you the cost of a direct flight, as well as any cheaper "hidden city" flights that have your intended destination as a layover. The caveat? Stick to carry-on luggage, as any checked-in bags will go all the way to the flight's final destination. 

Skiplagged also allows you to book hotels, including last-minute deals and special offers.

8. Flio (Android, iOS: Free)

Flio aims to be the all-in-one companion app for harried travelers making their way through airports worldwide. An official partner of 300 airports, Flio also has info on thousands more. That lets the app feature terminal maps, a boarding pass scanner, a flight tracker and directions to shuttle buses and booking options for everything from parking to lounge access. 

The app's sheer variety of services and features make it a great addition to the app toolkit of frequent fliers and vacationers alike.

9. AtYourGate (Android, iOS: Free)

AtYourGate is another helpful airport companion that focuses more about retail opportunities while you're killing time waiting at the airport. If you need food, supplies (like say a phone charger to replace the one you forgot to pack), or last-minute gifts, you can browse the AtYourGate app for nearby shops and restaurants instead of having to wander around the airport. 

AtYourGate users can order food or other items, pay through the app, and even arrange for the item to be delivered to them right at their gate, lounge, or other location. AtYourGate currently operates in a select number of major airports, including JFK, La Guardia, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland, San Diego, and Newark.

10. Mobile Passport (Android, iOS: Free)

Mobile Passport is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection-approved app that helps speed you through lengthy immigration lines. It allows anyone with U.S. or Canadian passports to submit their passport control and customs declarations through the app, replacing paper forms and providing faster processing in a number of major US airports where the Mobile Passport service is supported. 

The app will save you a good amount of time in line, but it’s no reason to leave your physical passport at home. Mobile Passport is a companion app, not a replacement.

11. TripIt (Android, iOS: Free)

TripIt promises to cut back on the travel hassle by consolidating your travel plans into a simple, convenient itinerary. Viewable online and synced to your cell phone, you can also share itineraries with your contacts. 

You just link your email account to TripIt, and the service will automatically dig through your inbox for reservation confirmations and other forms. Using that data, TripIt builds an organized itinerary of your flight boarding times, hotel check-ins and more. While TripIt is a free download, a $48.99 annual subscription gets you features like real-time flight alerts and updates on how long airport lines are.

12. App In The Air (Android, iOS: Free)

App In The Air is designed to help you through the entire process of your airplane flight, serving as a booking assistant that reminds you of your gate, ETA, check-in requirements, baggage tips, and more. 

The app condenses all of this important information so that it's easy to refer to at a glance, while also providing handy extras. You can view a summary of your airline's baggage rules (or even have an augmented reality overlay that you can use to measure your baggage to see if it will fit for carry-on or overhead guidelines). 

Travelers can integrate the app with TripIt, track loyalty rewards, view airplane amenities and even forward their details to their Apple Watch or Android Wear device. A premium subscription ($29.99 per year) includes real-time flight status updates, automated check-ins, and more.

If road trips are more your thing, consider GasBuddy, a mobile app that helps users track down the cheapest gas in their region. Users can tap into their GPS location through their phone, or search by address or zip code to find the nearby gas prices.

As many of the prices are based on user reports, GasBuddy rewards users with points for reporting and updating a station's prices, with points making you eligible for regular raffles of prizes like free gas.

Another handy travel companion when you hit the road is the aptly named Roadtrippers, a trip planning and itinerary app that lets you plot your next road trip, and helps you discover destinations, attractions, and useful stops along the way. 

With Roadtrippers, you can share your route and schedule with friends and family. The app helps users find everything from diners and dives to hotels, restaurants, national parks, roadside attractions and other scenic points of interest. 

If doing that research on a small phone screen stresses you out, you can plan trips in the Roadtrippers web portal if you prefer, saving locations and stops into a trip plan which you can sync across multiple devices for easy reference.

15. PackPoint (Android, iOS: Free)

PackPoint is a travel packing wizard that provides a checklist of travel essentials that you'll need to pack, depending on the nature of your trip. 

Simply create a trip profile with your destination, length of stay and purpose of travel. PackPoint then creates a customized packing and luggage checklist that takes into account whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, the type and amount of clothing to pack based on the weather forecast and other factors. 

The app also comes with a variety of premium features, such as TripIt integration for automatic packing list creation.

TripAdvisor is your crowd-sourced guide to hotels, restaurants and attractions worldwide. The app allows you to browse through plenty of reviews, images and videos featuring various establishments worldwide to get a better idea of what awaits you at your destination.

When it comes to trip planner apps, Tripit is worth checking out. When you’ve got long travel itineraries, it can be challenging to keep track of things and remember when exactly you have to catch the next flight. Tripit makes this super easy by syncing travel plans to your calendar.

These days, everyone travels with a smartphone. Beyond the ability to take endless selfies and keep in touch with family back home, they provide us with a never-ending stream of tools and apps to help us plan our travels and deal with any hiccups we encounter on the road.

Unfortunately, while there’s no shortage of travel apps, most of them are terrible.

To help you avoid downloading (and maybe even paying for) apps that aren’t worth your time, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite travel apps. These apps will save you time, money, and help you make the most of your travels. They’re the apps I think every traveler should have on their phone before they leave home.

Whether you’re in the planning stages and looking for things to fill out your upcoming itinerary or you’re already in a new country and want something to do later that day, GetYourGuide can help. I’ve used them a bunch and always have a great time!

LoungeBuddy takes the pain out of the process. After entering your credit card, airline status, and lounge memberships, the app tells you which lounges you can access at any given airport. It makes even the longest layover tolerable so you can relax and enjoy your travels. And if you don’t have status, you can book lounge access directly through the app. It’s easy to use, and free to download.  

You can also use the app to see who else is staying at the hostel. You can join a group chat for the hostel and connect with travelers to make plans before you arrive. In short, it’s a must-download app for backpackers and solo travelers. The app is free to download.  

The best feature of the app, however, is the ability to search for flights to everywhere . You simply input your departure airport and the dates you want to travel, and it will bring up all the potential options — from cheapest to most expensive — so you can browse for ideas without needing to check each one manually.

If you want to save money on flights, this app is a must. The app is free too.  

The basic version is free while the pro version is $49 USD per year.  

If you have to stay on budget (and don’t want to get ripped off), download this app. It’s free.  

The app can read out your text too so you can hear how it is properly pronounced, and you can also use your camera to take photos of text that it can translate too (which is helpful if you need to read ingredients while shopping, for example). The app is free.  

The app is free but for $9.99 USD per month, you can upgrade to premium, which saves you 20 cents a gallon (up to 50 gallons) and provides 24/7 roadside assistance.

While it’s important to not spend your entire trip on your phone or social media, there are times when using your smartphone can easily improve the quality of your trip, keep you safe, and save you money. By downloading the apps above, you’ll be able to have a much smoother trip, giving you more time, energy, and money to invest in your next adventure.  

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

Free Wi-Fi at airports, cafes, or hotels can be tempting for travelers who want to avoid costly roaming data packages. But this can expose them to security risks, as hackers can access their data on public Wi-Fi networks.

A virtual private network, or VPN, can safeguard you from potential hackers on public Wi-Fi, and a popular VPN service is NordVPN , with almost 400,000 ratings on the iOS App Store .

The NordVPN app has several practical security features, such as the VPN Kill Switch. This feature prevents your device from connecting to the web if your VPN connection is interrupted even for a few seconds.

If your VPN connection cuts out suddenly, you will not be open to hackers on the public Wi-Fi network.

There is also a feature called the Dark Web Monitor, which searches for your data, such as your contact information on the dark web, and alerts you if any leaks are detected.

Another benefit of a VPN service like NordVPN is that you can access geo-restricted content anywhere in the world.

For instance, if you are backpacking through South America, you may not be able to watch the same shows as you did back home in Europe. You can change your IP address using NordVPN to keep watching your favorite shows, even if you are thousands of miles away.

OneDrive — file storage and sharing

One of the worst fears of international travel is misplacing your passport. If you do, you can still retrieve your passport number and information using a cloud storage service.

Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud storage service with an iOS app that lets you access your essential documents from your device. You can also view your documents offline on your iPhone when you don't have Wi-Fi during your travels.

For extra security, you can upload sensitive documents to your Personal Vault on OneDrive.

The Personal Vault is a password-protected folder included with each OneDrive account. You can set up an authentication method to unlock the vault, such as a PIN or Face ID .

Another benefit of having cloud storage such as OneDrive is that you can back up your vacation photos and videos. Not only can this save precious storage on your iPhone, but even if you lose your phone, you won't lose your photos and videos.

If you want enough storage to hold your photos and videos for future trips, you can consider getting the Microsoft 365 Personal Plan with 1TB of cloud storage, which includes the Microsoft Office Suite.

The Microsoft 365 Personal Plan costs $69.99 per year for one person.

iTranslate — overcome language barriers

Traveling can be an enriching experience, but the language barrier can make it hard to communicate with locals. To make matters worse, if you don't have pricey international data plans, you can't translate words by searching for them online.

The iTranslate app can help you communicate with locals in their native language. The pro version allows for offline translation, so even if you are in a remote place, the app can still help you.

With over 100 languages available, it can help you navigate through many countries around the globe. You can easily translate via text, voice, image, and AR mode.

To use the AR mode, take a photo of an object, and iTranslate will give you the word for that object in the specified language.

The iTranslate app goes beyond helping you translate words and phrases. Before you take off for your trip, you can memorize essential words and phrases you will use during your stay.

The language learning features on the iTranslate include a flashcard widget, a phrasebook, and a verb conjugation chart for some languages. Although you will not become fluent in the other language, you can learn a few words and phrases that can help you get around a new city.

After months of travel preparation and reservation, your plane finally lands in the new city you've been dying to discover. But while your mind is ready to explore new sights, your body might not keep up because of jet lag.

Before your trip, you can use the Timeshifter app to sync your circadian rhythm with your destination. This app helps you adapt to new time zones gradually.

It is easy to use and eliminates the confusion of adjusting your body clock to new time zones.

To use it, create a jet lag plan by entering your sleep pattern and flight information, and choose whether you want to incorporate caffeine and melatonin. Based on the data you entered, the app provides personalized prompts on when to seek and avoid light, drink coffee, take a nap, and so forth.

It can help you methodically shift your bedtime before your departure date so that you will feel less like a sleepless wreck and be more alert and energized upon arrival. This way, you can avoid the dreaded cycle of fighting sleep during the day and staying wide awake at night, which can rob you of enjoying your vacation.

CBP's Mobile Passport Control — expedited U.S. entry

After you have overcome jet lag, language barriers, and currency conversions, you might be craving the comforts of home. If your home is in the United States, you can speed up your entry process without paying for a trusted traveler program like Global Entry.

The Mobile Passport Control app is free and provided by US Customs and Border Protection or CBP. The MPC app will not work for everyone, as it is only available to eligible American and Canadian travelers.

Even if you are an eligible American or Canadian traveler, you can only use the MPC app at limited ports of entry. Currently, MPC is available at 32 US international airports, eight Canadian pre-clearance locations, and four seaports.

The MPC app virtually replaces the traditional paper-based passport review process.

To use it, enter your passport information and questions you would find on a standard paper version of the CBP Declaration Form. When you arrive at the airport or seaport, submit the form, take a selfie photo, and you will get a QR code.

When you enter the customs area, look for the MPC-designated line and present your QR code and passport to the CBP Officer. The MPC-designated line should be shorter than the regular lines so you can get through customs faster.

Although the MPC app does not give you the same benefits as other programs like TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry, this is a free option that you can try when entering the US from your next international trip.

In terms of planning a trip, creating an itinerary, and keeping all your information in one place, TripIt is one of the best travel apps to keep yourself organized. When you first create an account, TripIt will sync with your inbox and automatically add all of your upcoming flights and reservations to your account. You can then modify each trip to include as little or as much information as you'd like. As someone who likes to be spontaneous when traveling, I usually only add the essentials: flight information, hotel reservations, and important documents. However, if you like to plan your trips down by the hour, you can also include activities, restaurant reservations, transportation, and more in your trip plan to share with fellow travelers.

As your trip approaches, TripIt will also send you packing reminders, give you COVID-19 travel guidance, and show transportation options. While you can get most of the essential features within the free version of the app (this is the one I use), you can also pay $49 a year to get advanced features such as check-in reminders, real-time flight alerts, point tracking, and even notifications for drops in airfare prices. 

Keep in mind that while TripIt gives you transportation options and finds places near your hotel, you cannot book or make any reservations directly from the app. The app is solely used to organize and keep track of all of your travel plans in one place, no matter where you book them.

All you need to do is select your destination, the dates, whether you are traveling alone or in a group, your budget, and the types of activities you are looking for, and Guide will do the planning. 

After generating a trip itinerary for you based on your prompt, Guide then lets you modify and customize the itinerary to your liking. I recently used Guide to plan a six-day trip to Austin, Texas, and this was the feature I enjoyed the most, since I had specific restaurants and activities I wanted to incorporate into my trip, but I also needed some additional recommendations. While you can't book flights or restaurant reservations through Guide, you can book and find great hotel deals powered by Expedia on the platform. 

Guide will also give you an overall budget for your trip, a packing list, and a comprehensive list of things to know about your destination -- which may be helpful for some more than others. While my trip to Austin was a solo trip, Guide has a feature where you can invite other fellow travelers to collaborate in planning your trip through Guide's chatbot, GuideBot. This chatbot also works sort of like ChatGPT, where you can ask GuideBot questions about your trip, your destination, or recommendations. Keep in mind you can not ask GuideBot to directly modify your trip for you, and instead need to manually do it yourself -- believe me, I tried.

I first discovered Omio when a friend recommended it to me while I was studying abroad in Spain, and ever since I downloaded it, it has become my go-to app for booking the best deals and fares on transportation within Europe. The concept behind Omio is simple: You plug in your departure and arrival location, including the number of people you are traveling with, and add whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip journey. Omio will then show you the best deals by train, bus, or plane to and from your desired destination, including how much time each option will take you and the number of stops. 

The German-based travel booking site is great at aggregating travel information from multiple sites, allowing you to view all of your transportation options in one place. This is incredibly beneficial when planning trips within Europe since there are several ways you can cross each border and often various languages and regulations to keep in mind. Omio is set in English but has multiple additional languages available, as well as currency options. During my time abroad, I solely used Omio to book all of my transportation, including planning a 17-day trip across seven different European countries. Overall, using Omio was not only convenient and seamless but also helped me save hundreds of dollars by helping me maximize my travel time by switching between flights, trains, and buses. 

However, since returning from Europe, I have not used Omio as much as I thought I would -- maybe because I have a car and take most of my trips by plane. And Omio's flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest compared to Booking.com or Skyscanner's, which heavily focus on flight deals. I have also found they have some limitations depending on the country or city you are traveling in. Be mindful of the deals and tickets you buy through Omio since some tickets are non-refundable, and some customers complain their customer service is not the best -- although I have yet to have any issues with them.

Dropbox, crumbled printouts shoved in a not-so-secret pocket in our suitcase—we all have own (not always wonderful) methods for storing backups of important travel documents like our passport and ID when we travel. Now TripIt, an app for organizing all your travel reservations and plans in one place, is hoping to make keeping track of those things a little easier. Their new ‘Traveler Profile’ feature is a digital place to store scanned versions of your passport and ID as well as contact info for people like your house sitter and doctor. Information is available while you’re traveling within TripIt’s iOS and Android apps, as well as through its website.

TripIt says that your profile can store “almost any document,” but it comes with 20 preset document and contact types to help you get started. You add everything right on your phone (including snapping shots of your passport), and access it with just a few taps later on. The information is also stored offline so you can access it even when you don’t have a data connection. All that sensitive data is protected behind a four-digit PIN, so if you happen to lose your phone you don’t have to worry about your info ending up in nefarious hands. If you’re the travel coordinator for your family of four, you can also store everyone’s documents to your account so you can access everything at once.

Using TripIt is a lot safer than storing things on your phone’s camera roll, and can make filling out forms at the airport or pulling up your pediatrician’s number in an emergency a lot easier. If you do end up in a situation where you lose your phone or luggage, there’s also definitely something to be said for having all that information available via the web.

The Transportation Security Agency’s (TSA) app, MyTSA, tries to make the wait a little more predictable and helps you determine what to expect, especially if you’re traveling from one of the busiest airports in the US.  

The app provides a real-time look at your selected airport's wait time, any FAA delays, and which TSA PreCheck lanes are open. 

The app also uses historical data to help you plan ahead. So, even if your flight is three days away, the app can show you what you’re likely to encounter that day based on previous experiences. 

It’s also a useful resource if you’re unsure about what you can or can’t pack in your carry-on and checked luggage.

Mobile Passport Control

If you’re traveling abroad, the Mobile Passport Control app makes your return through U.S. customs much faster. 

The app is a digital version of the Customs and Border Patrol Declaration Form that anyone entering the U.S. is required to fill out.  

You can save up to 12 profiles in the app, and only one form is needed per family, per residence. 

The app doesn't work at every airport, so check  the CBP website to see where you can use it.

One of the easiest ways to make GIFs on your iPhone is to use the Shortcuts app . That's because some lovely people have already made shortcuts that you can use to create GIFs with very little effort, and you can install those useful shortcuts from the Shortcuts gallery. Once installed, you can even start making a GIF just by asking Siri. There are a couple of different shortcuts you can use, depending on whether you want to create a GIF from a video, or create one by taking a series of photos with your iPhone.

Make GIFs from videos using Shortcuts

If you've filmed something on your iPhone that you think would make the perfect GIF, then a simple shortcut can help you create your GIF in just a few taps.

• Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
• Tap the Gallery tab at the bottom of the screen.
• In the Search bar, type Gif .
• From the results, select the Make GIF shortcut.
• Tap Add Shortcut at the bottom of the screen.
• The Make GIF shortcut is added to your shortcuts.
• Select Shortcuts tab at the bottom of the screen, and then tap the Make GIF shortcut.
• Select a video from your camera roll.
• Use the handles at either end of the video clip to select just the portion of the video that you want to use.
• Tap Save in the top right corner.
• Your GIF is created; you'll see a preview of it on your iPhone.
• Your GIF can now be found in your camera roll.
• You can make a new GIF at any time by opening Shortcuts and tapping the Make GIF shortcut, or by saying 'Siri, make GIF'.
• You can also add the shortcut as a widget on your home screen if you plan to use it a lot.

• From the results, select the Shoot a GIF shortcut.
• Tap Add Shortcut to add the shortcut to your iPhone.
• Return to the Shortcuts tab and tap the Shoot a GIF shortcut.

• After you've taken the fourth photo, you'll see a preview of your GIF.
• If you're happy with it, tap the Share icon and select Save Image to save it to your camera roll, or choose one of the other sharing options.
• If you're not happy with the preview, tap Done and the GIF won't be saved. You can then repeat the steps above to create your GIF again.

If you have any Live Photos on your iPhone that you think would make good GIFs, you can turn them into GIFs directly within the Photos app.

• Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
• Select Albums at the bottom of the screen.
• Under Media Types select Live Photos .
• Choose a Live Photo to turn into a GIF.
• Tap LIVE at the top left of the screen.
• Select Loop to have the Live Photo repeat over and over or Bounce to have the Live Photo play forwards and then backwards on repeat.
• Once you've made your selection, you're done. You don't need to save anything; the Live Photo setting you chose will remain until you select another option.
• Tap the Share icon to share your GIF with other people.

This is one of the most popular resources for finding GIFs, but the Giphy app also allows you to create your own GIFs, and even upload to the Giphy site. If you're looking to add additional features to your GIFs, such as text or stickers, then this is a great option.

• Install the Giphy app on your iPhone.
• Launch the Giphy app.
• Tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of the screen.
• Tap the Photos icon at the bottom left.
• Grant access to your photos and select the video you want to turn into a GIF.
• Use the drag handles to select the portion of the video that you want to use as your GIF. Your GIF can be a maximum of 6.5 seconds long.

With UFC Vegas 91 behind us, it’s time to look forward to the next UFC pay-per-view card, UFC 301, which takes place on Saturday, May 4 at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A flyweight title fight between current UFC champion Alexandre Pantoja and fast-rising contender Steve Erceg serves as the main event of the ESPN+ streaming PPV fight card.

Pantoja won the UFC flyweight belt in July 2023 with a split-decision victory over Brandon Moreno at UFC 290. The Brazilian defended his title for the first time with a unanimous decision triumph over Brandon Royval at UFC 296 in December. Pantoja, who has a 27-5 record, is fighting in front of his hometown crowd for the first time as a member of the UFC roster at UFC 301. The last time he fought in Rio de Janeiro was in 2013 under the Shooto banner.

Erceg, who sports a 12-1 record, enters the contest as the No. 10 fighter in the official UFC flyweight rankings . Erceg, who hails from Perth, Australia, is on an 11-fight winning streak with three of those victories coming as a member of the UFC roster. His only career loss came in September 2017 in his second pro fight. Erceg is coming off a knockout win over Matt Schnell in March of this year.

In the co-main event of UFC 301, former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo returns to action for the first time since August 2022. Aldo faces Jonathan Martinez in a bantamweight scrap.

Jonathan Martinez, who has a 19-4 record, is on a six-fight winning streak. The American striker is the No. 13 fighter in the official UFC bantamweight rankings. Martinez last fought in October. He won that matchup opposite Adrian Yanez via second-round TKO.

Jose Aldo’s last MMA fight took place in August 2022, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Merab Dvalishvili. He retired shortly after that setback. The Brazilian star held the UFC featherweight title twice. During his first reign, Aldo racked up seven title defenses.

If you forgot your iPad passcode, use your Mac or PC to reset it

Locked out of your iPad and forgot your iPad passcode? Use a computer to get your iPad into recovery mode so you can erase it and set it up again.

Use your iPad to reset your iPad passcode

Use your old passcode to temporarily access your iPad in iPadOS 17 or later

Learn what to do if you see "[Device] unavailable" or "Security Lockout" on your iPad .

If you enter the wrong passcode on your iPad Lock Screen too many times, an alert lets you know that your iPad is disabled.

If you can't remember your passcode when you try again, you need to use a computer to put your iPad in recovery mode. This process deletes your data and settings, including your passcode, allowing you to set up your iPad again.

After you erase your iPad, you can restore your data and settings from a backup. If you didn't back up your iPad, you can set it up as a new device and then download any data that you have in iCloud.

Step 1: Make sure that you have a computer (Mac or PC)

This process requires a Mac or PC. If you're using a PC, make sure that it has Windows 10 or later and that the Apple Devices app or iTunes is installed . You also need the cable that came with your iPad, or another compatible cable, to connect your iPad to the computer.

If you don't have a computer and you can't borrow one, you need to go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.

Step 2: Turn off your iPad

Unplug your iPad from the computer if it's connected.

Turn off your iPad using the method for your iPad model:

If your iPad doesn't have a Home button: Press and hold one of the volume buttons and the top button at the same time until the power off slider appears.

If your iPad has a Home button: Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears.

Drag the slider to turn off your iPad, then wait a minute to make sure that it turns off completely.

Step 3: Put your iPad in recovery mode

On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open a Finder window. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, open iTunes. If iTunes is already open, close it, then open it again. Find out which macOS your Mac is using . On a PC, open the Apple Devices app or iTunes.

Connect your iPad to your computer using a USB cable.

Keep your iPad connected and press the buttons for your iPad model:

For iPad models without a Home button: Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button.

For iPad models with Home button: Press and hold both the Home and the top (or side) buttons at the same time.

Keep holding the button until you see the recovery mode screen on your iPad, then let go.

If you see the passcode screen, you need to turn off your iPad and start again.

If you can't get your iPad to show the recovery mode screen and you need help, contact Apple Support .

Step 4: Restore your iPad

Locate your iPad in the Finder, iTunes, or the Apple Devices app on the computer that it's connected to. (Learn how to find your connected iPad .)

Choose Restore when you see the option to Restore or Update. Your computer downloads software for your iPad and begins the restore process. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then turn off your iPad and start again.

Wait for the process to finish.

Disconnect your iPad from the computer, then set up and use your iPad .

iOS 17.5 Beta 3: Your iPhone Could Get These New Features Soon

Some developers and beta testers can try these features now, ahead of the update's release to the general public.

The latest iOS update is coming, but there's no release date yet.

Apple released the third iOS 17.5 beta to public beta testers on Wednesday, a day after the company released the beta to developers, and almost two months after the release of iOS 17.4 . The latest beta brings a handful of new features to the iPhones of some developers and beta testers, like more ways for people in the European Union to download apps.

We recommend downloading a beta only on something other than your primary device. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 17.5, these features might be buggy and battery life may be short, and it's best to keep those troubles on a secondary device.

If you're a developer or public beta tester, here are some of the new features you might find in iOS 17.5 beta 1. Note that the beta is not the final version of iOS 17.5, so there could be more features landing on your iPhone when iOS 17.5 is released. There's no word on when Apple will release iOS 17.5 to the public yet.

More ways for people in the EU to download apps

With iOS 17.5 beta 2, Apple now allows people in the EU to download apps from a developer's website. Apple posted an  online guide that could help developers distribute their apps over the web. 

"In eligible regions, you can distribute approved, non-marketplace apps from your website," Apple writes. "To distribute your app, fill out a webform that outlines the qualifications, and if approved, Apple enables you to download a framework that facilitates the secure installation of your app from your website."

This guide also says developers need to use iOS 17.5 beta 2 or later to enable web distribution of their apps. 

Developers also have to opt into  new App Store business terms for the EU and pay a  0.50 euro Core Technology Fee  for every first-time app installation over 1 million in the past 12 months. But Apple gives developers the first 1 million first-time app installations for free.

"Membership in the Apple Developer Program includes one million first annual installs per year for free for apps distributed from the App Store, Web Distribution, and/or alternative marketplaces," Apple writes. 

Apple  announced  this capability on March 12, alongside other EU-specific developer features, like the ability to choose the design of in-app promotions.

This is the latest EU-specific feature to come to the iPhone. When Apple released iOS 17.4 in March, a big part of that update was allowing people in the EU to download alternate app stores in order to comply with the region's Digital Markets Act. 

Detect and disable unknown trackers

Your iPhone might soon be able to help you detect and disable unknown trackers.

According to 9to5Mac, code found in iOS 17.5 hints at the introduction of a new anti-stalking feature on your iPhone. The feature would reportedly detect unwanted trackers, like AirTags and other third-party tracking devices , and then help you disable them. 

"This item isn't certified on the Apple Find My network," the code reads, according to 9to5Mac. "You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided on a website by the manufacturer of this item."

Looking through Settings and Find My on iOS 17.5 beta 3, there doesn't appear to be any new option to enable this feature.

New puzzle game Quartiles for Apple News Plus subscribers

Apple's iOS 17.5 beta 1 also introduces a new puzzle game to the News app for Apple News Plus subscribers, called Quartiles. At the start of each puzzle, you are given a grid of 20 tiles that have parts of words on them, like "te" and "tra". You then have to combine these tiles to form different words. Words can be between one and four tiles long, but each grid can be made into five four-tile words -- you get the most points by combining the tiles this way.

If you subscribe to Apple News, which costs  $13 (£13, AU$20) a month , you can find Quartiles by going to  News > Following > Puzzles  and swiping the carousel at the top of the screen. You can also scroll down the  Puzzles  page to find Quartiles below the Crossword Minis.

Puzzle leaderboards for Apple News Plus subscribers

In addition to Quartiles, a new feature in iOS 17.5 beta 3 lets Apple News Plus subscribers easily compare their daily puzzle scores with other people's. To turn on this feature, go to Settings > News and under News+ Puzzles tap the toggle next to Game Center . 

You will be able to compete with your friends and families on your News Plus puzzles.

"Send your results to Game Center to see how you rank among friends and other solvers on today's puzzles," Apple writes under this setting.

It's important to note that anyone can enable this setting, but if you don't have an Apple News Plus subscription, you can't play the daily puzzles and therefore can't post anything to these leaderboards.

Podcast widget changes color

The Podcast widget can change color to match what you're listening to.

With iOS 17.5 beta 1, your Podcast widget will change color depending on the artwork of whatever podcast you're listening to at the moment. So if the podcast you're listening to has red artwork, the widget will turn red. 

This aesthetic feature was in some early iOS 17.4 betas, but Apple removed it from that update's public release. In iOS 17.4, Apple also brought transcripts to podcasts , which makes the audio media more accessible for more people.

Books app counter tool

It appears iOS 17.5 beta 1 also wants to help people achieve their reading goals. With the update, the Books app gets a counter in the top right corner of the app's homepage. If you tap this counter, the app takes you to your Reading Goals menu. This menu shows you how much time you've spent reading today. There's also a button here that reads Explore the Book Store which opens the Book Store . 

At first, Books sets your daily reading goal for five minutes a day, but you can change this goal to anywhere between 1 minute or the absurd 1,440 minutes (24 hours) a day -- I like to read, but that feels a little aggressive.

Those are a few of the new features some developers and beta testers will see in the first iOS 17.5 beta. That doesn't mean these are the only features coming to the next iOS update, or that these changes will stick when iOS 17.5 is released to the public. As of now, there's no word on when Apple will release iOS 17.5.
