Now that everyone is in lockdown and people can’t travel, it’s a great time to… lay on the sofa and watch TV! I’m sure that’s no news, unfortunately, right?

Anyway let me give you some suggestions to do something different from watching Netflix episode after episode. What about dreaming about your next trip to Spain?

Rick Steves is the world’s travel guru. His guidebooks are a must-read for anyone planning to travel. And he has a wonderful TV series about travel in Europe. On 2004, season 3 took you to Madrid on their 1st episode, Toledo and Salamanca in their 2nd episode and Sevilla on their last show (13th episode).

Season 5 heads to Barcelona and Catalunya (episode 3), and Season 6 focusses on the South Spain with episode 4 about Granada, Cordoba and Costa del Sol , and episode 5 on more Andalucia (with added Gibraltar and Tangier), then episode 10 is about Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago , and finally episode 11 shows you around the Basque Country .

Spanish food documentaries

If you are a foodie, you won’t lack of options either. Start with episodes 6 and 7 of The Everyday Gourmet , on paella, tapas and sherry. Continue with episode 8 of chef Anthony Bourdains about food in the Basque Country, then French actor and foodie Gerard Depardieu’s tour of Europe that stops in Catalonia (episode 6) and the Basque Country (episode 3).

For some more excitement, try Bizarre Foods , that after a general episode 2 about Spain on their first season, takes you visiting Madrid on episode 5 of season 6 , and again on episode 8 of season 9 , then follows the Camino de Santiago on episode 5 of their last season.

Finally, for some good laughs, check out comedian  Zane Lamprey trip to discover the Barcelona spirits (episode 10, season 3).

Aerial Spain

José Andrés Will Take You on a Tour of Spain in New Travel Series

The chef and humanitarian is returning to television — and he's bringing his entire family with him.

José Andrés is heading out for an adventure through his homeland with his daughters, and he’s inviting you to come watch. 

On Thursday, Discovery+ announced the premiere date for the upcoming documentary series “José Andrés and Family in Spain.” The series, which debuts on December 27, will follow the celebrated chef and humanitarian as he travels through Spain on a gastronomic adventure with his three American-raised daughters, Carlota, Inés, and Lucia Andrés. 

“Come with me and my family on an amazing journey across Spain where we will eat our way through every region and see what makes Spanish food the best in the world,” Andrés shared in a statement provided to Food & Wine .

Viewers can expect plenty of fun, a few food-filled lessons, and plenty of heart along the way. For example, in the city of Barcelona, close to where Andrés’ career began at the famed el Bulli, he proudly shares with his daughters some of the best, most creative cuisine in the world. 

In Madrid, viewers can follow the family as they soak up delicious classic dishes like slow-cooked lamb, churros, and local sweets originally baked for the monarchy. 

The show continues with the family’s travel through Andalusia, where they indulge in coveted Bluefin tuna fresh from the sea, and on to Valencia, where they immerse themselves in the secrets of making the perfect paella.

In addition to learning about local delicacies, viewers can also travel vicariously through the family’s outdoor adventures, including paragliding across the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and milking goats to make specialty cheese in Asturias. “My daughters have heard endless stories about the people, places, and food that shaped me as a young man, but we got the chance to go visit, meet and taste everything together,” Andrés adds. “There is no better way to learn about Spanish culture than with a fork and spoon in hand.”

José Andrés’s Favorite Restaurants in Spain, According to His New Travel Show

Chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist José Andrés has a new travel show, and it’s all about his homeland. Across  José Andrés and Family in Spain ’s six-episode run, the food magnate and El Bulli alum takes his American-born daughters Carlota, Inés, and Lucía to explore the cuisines of Spain, the country where he was born and received his culinary education.

Like any good travel show, Andrés’s new program—streaming December 27 on Discovery+—doesn’t just entertain. Instead, it offers a series of great dining itineraries for many of the Iberian country’s most beloved food destinations, including Barcelona, Madrid, and Andalusia, for a delicious survey of the world’s tapas capital.

If you want to eat and travel like Andrés, this list of every restaurant, bar, and food destination from the show is the place to start. 

José Andrés arrived in Barcelona at just six years old, spending most of his childhood and attending culinary school in the Catalonian city. “This is where I became who I am,” he tells his two eldest daughters in the episode intro, before the trio begin on a reverent tour of the city’s many tapas spots.

Run by Michelin-star chef Carles Abellan—a former classmate of Andrés in culinary school. Andrés and Abellan prepare a medley of fresh seafood in the episode, starring shrimp, lemon, and fresh Spanish olive oil.

At a café bar named after Pinnochio, the Andrés family stop for cafe con leche, xuxos (flaky, fried pastries, dusted with sugar and filled with crema Catalana), and a glass of Cava.

Run by three fellow El Bulli alums, Disfrutar’s name is the Spanish word for “to enjoy.” Andrés brings his daughters to Disfrutar for a tasting menu at the exclusive chef’s table, where they savor a variety of elaborate deconstructed dishes keeping the spirit of El Bulli alive today.

This pastry shop is run by Christian Escribà, a fourth generation pastry chef Andrés describes as the “Willy Wonka of Barcelona.” Escribà offers a huge swath of whimsically designed cakes and confections, including hyperrealistic edible high heels, “cheeseburger” macarons, and crema Catalanas, Catalan puddings similar to crème brûlée.

The family’s road trip through Spain continues in Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region. Known as Al-Andalus in Moorish times, Andalusian food is highly influenced by Arabic and African flavors brought to the Iberian peninsula during an era of Islamic rule. 

Casa Pepe staff serve up a breakfast of fried eggplant bites and plates of ham and fried eggs atop a bed of artichokes. The vegetable is one of many common Spanish ingredients introduced to the cuisine by the Moors.

Andrés describes ventas as the Andalusian equivalent to American roadside diners—cozy spots with predictable menus focused on home-cooked flavors. Venta El Toro, run by Maruja Gallardo, serves up a gazpacho made with tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, and mint. While similar cold soups have existed for millenia, Gazpacho as it exists now has its roots in Andalusia, and is perhaps the region’s most iconic dish.

Located right on the coast, this restaurant serves what Andrés calls “some of the best bluefin tuna money can buy.” The restaurant has 15 tuna dishes on the menu, showcasing every part of the fish in a variety of ways.

Another tapas bar, the specialty at Casa Balbino is the tortilla de camarones—shrimp fritters fried in olive oil. A tour of the kitchen shows five frying stations dedicated to churning out the dish for hungry customers. 

Episode three finds the family in Madrid, Spain’s capital, where they sample classics like jamón Iberico, patatas bravas, and tostas—Spanish open-faced sandwiches. Their tour of the city jumps between more tapas bars and some of the country’s ritziest spots.

Pastry chef Roberto Martín’s patisserie was originally gifted to the Spanish queen’s pastry chef in 1855, and it still supplies baked goods to the royal palace to this day. Andrés recommends the pastas del consejo—council pastries—small lemon cookies that resemble palmiers.

Asador César Rubio runs this historic restaurant, which serves whole legs of crispy-skinned lamb roasted in wood-fired oven.

Nuns in this monastery sell cookies from a venta de las dulces, a sweets window. Filled with Catholic imagery, cookies in this monastery are sold by the half kilo. Don’t expect to see the bakers though—the nuns remain cloistered and sell their wares from behind a rotating door.

Famous for its sardinas a la plancha, this tapas spot is renowned for its grilled sardines and fried peppers. Next door is the olive shop Aceitunas Jimenez, opened in 1935, which sells a variety of pickled olives.

This spot for tostas has a consistent line around the block, with distinct crowds for locals—who arrive around nine in the morning—and tourists who flock for the lunch rush.

Pastry chef Juan Alfonso Boada serves the Andrés family fresh churros and chocolate sauce before teaching Andrés’s daughter Inés to fry the desserts herself.

José Andrés calls this his favorite spot for patatas bravas, thanks to their bravas sauce. Made with paprika, olive oil, and a few more ingredients the chef refuses to share, it’s the ideal balance of brightness and heat.

At this open market, Andrés and company sample jamón Iberico and purchase a full leg to share at a potluck with friends at the end of the day.

Homeland to Spain’s iconic paella, Valencia is the Mediterranean’s busiest port. In their time in the city, Andrés’s daughters use what they’ve learned while traveling to compete in a paella competition alongside some of Valencia’s best chefs. Taking time to train for the tournament means they make slightly fewer stops on this leg of the journey.

The first stop on their paella tour is Casa Carmela, a restaurant with over 10 wide paella pans operating at a time. They sample a seafood paella with shrimp and the trademark coating of crispy rice.

Ca Cent Duros serves a variety of esmorzaret, which are like long baguette sandwiches stacked with eggs, veggies, and meats. The dish’s name literally translates to “a small meal.”

This bustling shop serves up cocas, Catalan flatbreads that are similar to Italian pizzas with the notable absence of cheese. Instead, they’re topped up with zucchini, tomatoes, and more.

José Andrés was born in this mountainous region in Spain’s northwest, home to miles of farmland and some of Spain’s most famous cheeses. 

The family’s first stop is Casa Marcial, a restaurant that holds two Michelin stars, where they receive an overview of Asturian cuisine from chefs Nacho Manzano, Dulce Martínez, and Marcos Morán.

More than a single restaurant, this walkable street in Asturias’s capital city Oviedo is bustling with bars and cafés specializing in the region’s signature drink—hard cider. They also sample another specialty of the region called cachopo, a fried snack made of thin-sliced veal, ham, and cheese.

This bakery is one of Spain’s oldest, founded in 1914. The family sample a number of pastries, but the stars are the casadielles, a long flaky treat rolled in sugar, and carbayones, Asturias’s regional dessert. Carbayones are similar to eclairs, filled with an almond-and-egg-based pastry cream.

To taste Asturias’s wide array of wild mushrooms, we stop at Xune Andrade’s restaurant Monte, which is run out of his grandmother’s old house. Everything served at Monte is foraged or grown within a mile of the restaurant. Andrade prepares a fungus-themed menu to show off the forest’s many indigenous wild mushrooms.

The final episode follows José Andrés and family off the coast of Africa to the Canary Islands. This warm vacation destination is home to delicious seafood like moray eel and wines grown in Lanzarote’s mineral-rich volcanic soils.

Joined by food writer Javier Suárez, the family stops at a restaurant for barnacles, octopus, and huge Atlantic shrimp, served with a variety of bright tropical sauces like mojo verde and mojo rojo.

Wrestling manager Aduén Morales brings the family for a pre-match meal in the village of Haría, where they order puchero Canario, a stew of green beans, potatoes, pumpkins, and meat. They then go to watch Lucha Canaria, the island’s traditional team wrestling sport.

Andrés meets his longtime friend Fermín Otamendi, a fifth generation winemaker at the Bodega El Grifo, founded in 1775. He and his children sample the island’s wines, which have a high mineral content and low sweetness, courtesy of the island’s mild climate and ashy volcanic soil.

Where should I begin? Andalucía is the mother of an ancestral culture that is a symbol of international identity.

This beautiful and vibrant region attracts more and more tourists worldwide in search of joy, rhythm, music, and dance.

Moreover, the cradle of Flamenco is considered to be Jeréz de la Frontera, located in the interior of the province of Cádiz.

This means that people can enjoy Spain’s most authentic Flamenco to the fullest in this region.

Millions of artists and professionals of this art have been maintaining for generations this beautiful tradition that has been part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2010.

Although different areas of Andalucía have their own aires or regional styles, here are the best places to enjoy the best Flamenco Shows in the world!

1. Tablao Flamenco El Arenal - Sevilla

Chosen by the New York Times newspaper as the best flamenco show in Seville. The Tablao Flamenco El Arenal is the most symbolic place to enjoy Flamenco in Seville, founded more than 25 years ago.

The show is an absolute blast. It is a genuine Andalusian show with much passion and deep feelings.

The quality of the dancers is impressive. All with a lot of experience and excellent artistic quality in an intimate atmosphere, they perform the best interpretations of flamenco dancing and singing you will ever see!

If you choose the dinner option, I recommend arriving 30 minutes early to start dinner quietly and then watching the show.

The Tablao Flamenco El Patio Sevillano is by far the oldest  Tablao  in Seville, founded in 1952!

This place has been home to many of the most important Flamenco shows in the world. The spectacle is a beautiful and authentic Spanish experience as the atmosphere is cozy and familiar, and the audience is warm and energetic. 

The food quality is just right, as you can taste the atmosphere of Andalucia. The show lasts 90 minutes, and some people argue that the price is a bit expensive, but it is worth it, as many artists are on stage, compared to other flamenco shows. 

What I liked the most about the show at El Patio Sevillano, compared to other places in Seville, was that, to end the performance, they finished strong with the famous Andalusian regional dance called the sevillanas, with more than 20 artists on stage. - Lucia, 26 years old, lives in Boston.

3. Cueva de La Rocío - Granada

Cueva de La Rocío is an excellent place to see flamenco in Granada. It’s a cave flamenco performance for 30€! It’s excellent value for money. And the whole show is up close and personal. The performers are very talented, and the cave setting enhances the experience x10 times! 

The show includes a drink. You can also have dinner in the restaurant, with a menu of traditional dishes from Granada: two dishes, dessert, and a drink. 

At the end of the spectacle, they bring people from the audience to dance with them, which makes a great ending!

4. Tablao Flamenco Cardenal - Córdoba

The Tablao El Cardenal is an obligatory reference point in the Cordovan flamenco. 

You get a great seat for an affordable price since all seats have a good view of the stage. Plus, guests are welcomed with a drink, with options to order little dishes. And you can also sit in a courtyard of a large old house, which enhances the experience and makes it more familiar. 

This place has a long tradition of more than 25 years of experience with the best artists, the best show, and giving the best vibes to the spectators that every year fill the place in search of authentic Flamenco from Andalucía.

5. La Cava - Cádiz

Cádiz is an essential epicenter of Flamenco that attracts travelers from all over the world. One of the best-known  Tablaos  is in La Cava, an old theater from the 12th century. 

There are more than 150 original photographs of the most outstanding figures in the history of Flamenco in the last 50 years.

And the performance is outstanding. These are very talented artists that live and breathe Flamenco. I’m sure you’ll set your big high after visiting La Cava. 

Tip:  Arrive at least 30 minutes earlier if you are getting Dinner to enjoy the gastronomic experience in a relaxed atmosphere.

I encourage you to go to Cádiz since this region is known for its bustling peñas in the neighborhoods, the tables, spontaneous street performances, and fairs and festivals throughout the year.

Also, it is a lovely place, organized, familiar with kind staff, and it is very close to the city center! So there are no excuses to come and live this magical experience I’m sure you will remember.

7. Tabanco El Pasaje - Jeréz de la Frontera

This is a must-visit place to pop by when you are in Jérez.

Far from a touristy spot, this place is a small bar/taverna where you can enjoy daily flamenco shows. I recommend that you book a table because it fills up.

Here you can dine while you watch the show and have a few drinks while enjoying with friends or family. 

The menu is a typical traditional food that perfectly accompanies the flamenco show, and the atmosphere is tangible! Plus, the performance is very high-quality, and you can really tell it is authentic from the moment you step in.

If you are looking for an authentic flamenco show experience in one of the most prestigious places in Spain, this is the place for you. 

The Corral de la Morería, since 1956, has been a representative spot in Madrid. The show is so worth it, lasting 1 hour and 10 minutes. You can choose if you want dinner with a show, drinks, or just the spectacle. 

However, we recommend booking tickets for dinner, as it is one of the most awarded places to dine. The food is delicious and well-presented, as it has a Michelin-star!

If you enjoy experiencing culture, this is a must-visit. You should expect professional performers, talented people, a lively atmosphere, and top food. I recommend it very much, especially the dinner and show option.

9. Tablao Flamenco Cordobés - Barcelona

Another great place to experience Flamenco in Spain is Tablao Cordobés in Barcelona.

You’ll get involved in the passion, music, talent, culture, and history atmosphere as soon as you get in. For years, this place has been under the direction of a family of artists, and it has attracted all the flamenco legends to Barcelona. 

The whole show is magical, and you’ll get excellent value for money. 

Here, Flamenco is more than a performance. You can choose to have an evening meal food menu, plus there’s an unlimited buffet and drinks all night before you are taken into the showroom.

The show lasts 1 hour and 10 minutes, with an additional 1.5 hours if you choose the evening meal option.

Valencia is one of the most important cities in Spain that receives an enormous amount of tourists every year who want to know Spanish culture and traditions.

But, it should be noted that this art of deep Andalusian roots subsists in Valencia thanks to the persistence of managers and artists who have followed the tradition, as is this place that I will show you below.

Six Best Travel Shows on Amazon Prime (2021)

Since our family is spending a lot of time not traveling and spending more time indoors , we are getting more of our travel fix by watching travel shows. It seems like there are a lot more travel-related shows on Amazon Prime than there are on Netflix. Here’s a list of our favorites, and why you should watch them too.

Note : As of publishing (updated Jan 2021), these shows are still available with an Amazon Prime membership. However, things quickly change when it comes to streaming services. Sometimes shows get dropped and new ones get added. We’ll try to update this post whenever possible.

Word Travels

Globe trekker, rick steves europe, the curious traveler, the amazing race, james may: our man in japan, suggestions and recommendations, share this:.

First aired in the early 2000s in Nat Geo Adventure, Word Travels follows Robin Esrock and Julia Dimon as they go from country to country, looking for an angle for their stories in the hopes of getting them (selling them) in publications that they write and pitch for.

Julia has a weekly travel column in a Canadian newspaper, while Robin was a freelance travel writer. It shows how raw the world of travel writing is, and how real it is. They struggle to find angles that have not been covered yet, while also making it engaging so publications can buy their stories.

While some of their trips in the show are press trips, most of the time, you’ll see Julia and Robin paying for their trips and saving money by staying in hostels. The show also shows how you would spend hours just trying to chase marketing people and story leads and end up with no story at all.

Really interesting and quite different from other travel shows out there. Each episode is around 25 minutes long, so good for a quick watch.

Originally called Lonely Planet , this TV series was originally aired in the 1990s! It was in fact a part of me growing up as I awaited every single episode – it is a means to travel the world without any money (as I was when I was 7).

Bradley Cooper hosted a few shows, but my favorite hosts were Ian Wright and Justine Shapiro. Ian Wright went on to host a few more shows on the Discovery Channel. These hosts provided information about every destination, and their love of traveling is very contagious.

Every episode is between 45 minutes to an hour long and features multiple cities and/or themes per episode.

Rick Steves is known as a subject matter expert in Europe , which stemmed from his vacations to the continent, his PBS shows, and his guidebooks. While you can stream full episodes of his show on free TV and YouTube, Prime also has a few seasons available for free.

I love the cities that he visits, mainly because I do love Europe as well. Every episode is 20-30 minutes long, which also makes it a quick show to binge-watch.

This is an Indie show that I’ve only managed to see on Amazon Prime. The host gives facts about a specific city and connects the history and the sites that she visits. It’s not at all dry and I find that I learn something new whenever I watch an episode.

Every episode is around 25-30 minutes long, and only features a city (or more cities, but within the same country). The host does not really travel to really exotic destinations, but it is a good show nonetheless. Currently only has 3 seasons available on Prime.

Want adrenaline mixed with adventure and travel? Enter the Amazing Race . This show has been going on for 30+ seasons and is also available on CBS.

Honestly, watching this TV series makes me stressed. The contestants bicker a lot, are consistently on the go, and have to do challenges along the way. Add that to constantly traveling by train, plane, boat, and car, and have to race to not be the last!

Every episode is close to an hour, with specials running up to 90 minutes. Each season has new sets of teams, new dynamics, and new destinations.

My husband and I have actually talked about trying to get on to the show, so you’ll never know if you finally do see us on the show!

Japan – a bucket list country for most people. It’s so different and traditional, modern yet steeped in history. From one of the original presenters of Top Gear, James May travels throughout Japan and shows us, the viewers, what’s cool about the place and his quirky thoughts.

Every episode is around an hour-long, with new cities covered per episode. There’s only one season available, but it’s filmed in 4K and the detail is beautiful!

Our favorite travel show (after Departures), the host Richard Ayoade takes a guest for a 48-hour romp around various cities across the globe. He has some A-listers on his show like Paul Rudd, Jon Hamm, and even his old IT Crowd colleagues.

Note that not all the seasons are available on Prime, but you can still binge-watch all 3 seasons that are available as of this blog’s publish date. Every episode is around 30 minutes long, so not a lot of time investment is required.

Did we mention that Ayoade is so funny as a host? He is such an unexpected traveler – he does not like trying new foods, does not like really cold weather, and does not like doing crazy, adventurous things. These all add to the quirkiness of the show.

Seville is one of the most popular destinations in Europe and we will tell you the tourist traps to avoid in Seville for your next trip.

Seville, one of Spain’s most enchanting cities, is brimming with rich history, vibrant culture, and architectural marvels.

However, like many popular tourist destinations, Seville has its share of tourist traps. Here’s a guide to some common ones to avoid and alternatives for a more authentic experience.

If you are  going from Seville Airport to the city center  you should know that it will take 15 minutes by taxi and 30 minutes by public transportation.

WHERE TO STAY IN SEVILLE

There are many different places to stay in Seville. The neighborhoods of  Santa Cruz and Triana  are located near the city center. Another great place to stay is in  La Macarena , especially if you want to enjoy the nightlife in Seville.

Tourist Traps to Avoid in Seville

1. avoid overpriced flamenco shows.

Trap: Many central venues offer flamenco shows that are overpriced and cater specifically to tourists. These often lack the authenticity and passion of genuine flamenco.

Alternative: Seek out smaller, local tablaos or cultural associations where flamenco is performed for the love of the art, such as Casa de la Memoria or La Carbonería, where locals often perform.

2. Skip Generic Souvenir Shops

Trap: Shops around major tourist sites sell generic, often non-local souvenirs that are overpriced.

Alternative: Look for artisan markets or shops in less touristy neighborhoods. Explore the Calle Tetuán and Calle Cuna for shops selling authentic local crafts.

Ms Gervalla-Schwarzd her small Balkan nation, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, is repeatedly reminded of the aggressive intentions of both Serbia and its ally Russia.

"Ukraine hasn't recognised the Republic of Kosovo as a state, but we really believe that we know exactly what Ukraine is going through," she told The Associated Press in an interview.

"And we know that there is only one solution, not only for Ukraine, but for Europe," she said.

"It can only be Russia to lose the war and Ukraine to win this war. Otherwise, Europe should prepare for other conflicts in our continent."

The people of Kosovo were the targets of war crimes and other atrocities by Serbia's security forces in the 1990s, an experience that led Kosovo to seek independence.

"While Kosovo is a small state with very modest possibilities to help, we have tried to be very helpful with Ukraine and have not hesitated to show our unconditional support and sympathy to the people and to the state of Ukraine," Ms Gervalla-Schwarz said.

Lord Cameron has called the UK's measures on a Russian defence attache "an unequivocal message" to Moscow. 

The foreign secretary was replying to James Cleverly's post on X in which he said the Home Office expelled a Russian defence attache as part of a series of measures against the country.

Other measures in the package include removing the diplomatic premises status from several Russian owned properties in the UK and capping the amount of time Russian diplomats can spend in the UK.

Budapest is once again raising eyebrows across the world's biggest military alliance as it pledges to defy a NATO initiative. 

The alliance's long-term plan to support Ukraine militarily was agreed in April, but was dubbed a "crazy mission" by Hungary's foreign minister today. 

Under the plans, NATO would take over some coordination work from a US-led coalition known as the Ramstein group.

Discussing the plans today, Peter Szijjarto said: "Hungary will stay out of NATO's crazy mission despite all the pressure."

Relations between Budapest and NATO have soured because of Hungary's foot-dragging over the ratification of Sweden's NATO accession - finally passed by Budapest in March - and also over nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban's close ties with Moscow. 

The Russian embassy in London has said there will be "an appropriate response" after Britain expelled a Russian defence attache.

The embassy said the restrictions that had been imposed were done under a "groundless and ridiculous pretext", according to Russian state news agency TASS.

It comes after Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was reported as telling journalists that the Kremlin will respond appropriately following the expulsion.

It's always assumed defence attaches play some kind of role gatherling intelligence and that is generally tolerated by their host countries. 

They could be gathering data about weapons production for instance or ship building but there is a line they are expected not to cross. 

The assumption here is that the Russians have broken the rules of the game.

But the British government will have thought long and hard before expelling the Russian. It doesn't come without cost.

In their day jobs defence attaches play a crucial role in liaising with their hosts.  That can be very important in terms of avoiding misunderstandings that could lead to unnecessary and dangerous escalation. 

Losing Russia’s defence attache in London deprives the UK of one more line of liaison at a time when clear understanding and clarification could be essential to avoiding deepening conflict.

That is not ideal at a time of war. 

What is not clear is how much these moves are connected specifically to the conduct of the Russians involved or should they actually be seen more as another chapter in the diplomatic war underway between Russia and the UK.

The UK has undoubtedly weakened Russia's ability to spy in the UK and gather intelligence but these measures will also affect Britain's ability to predict and avoid potential escalation. 

That will be made even worse if Russia, as may be expected, responds with like-for-like retaliation

Seven people have been injured by Russian shelling in eastern Kharkiv, according to the region's governor.

Oleg Synegubov said among those wounded was an eight-year-old girl and three boys, two aged 14 and the other 15. 

"Two [of the] boys are in serious condition, [the other] boy and [the] girl are in average condition," he said. 

One 55-year-old civilian of unspecified gender was also hospitalised. 

Two women had minor injuries. 

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has offered his thoughts on the expulsion of a Russian defence attache the government has accused of being an undeclared military intelligence officer. 

"Today we've expelled Russia's defence attache who has been working as an intelligence officer for Putin in the UK," he said on X. 

"We will not tolerate Putin’s efforts to undermine our nation and democracy and will continue to stand up for freedom here and in Ukraine."

Although the ultimate metric of success in this brutal war is territory gained, to achieve that outcome requires a more complex strategy than simply focusing on the frontline battle.

One of the reasons that the Royal Air Force was formed as an independent service was the recognition that greater impact could often be achieved by targeting enemy logistics and supply lines behind the frontline, rather than simply focusing effort on the "close battle".  

Military action is ultimately driven by political will to achieve a desired end-state; the military simply creates the conditions in which a political outcome can be achieved.  

At the tactical level of warfare, the focus is on the battles of individual soldiers and units prevailing against tactical targets.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, senior military strategists seek to attack the enemy's "centre of gravity" - the one thing that the enemy cannot afford to lose and thus must protect at all costs.

'Fight smarter'

In the Second World War, much of the Allied bombing effort was targeting German industrial capacity, as without the ability to regenerate military equipment and ammunition, the war would not be sustainable.  

Ukraine has a smaller army than Russia, and so any conventional attritional battle would favour Russia.

Therefore, Ukraine has to try to "fight smarter" and erode Russia's will - or capacity - to fight.  

A war on this scale consumes huge quantities of resource, which has to be funded in some way.  

Russia's oil exports fund Vladimir Putin's military campaign and also pay for imports of vital munitions from North Korea and Iran.  

By targeting the enemy's oil facilities Ukraine will be aiming to reduce Russia's export capacity, which in turn impacts Russia's ability to fund the war.  

That might not help the close battle, but could undermine Russia's commitment to a longer-duration conflict.

And, although drones are an "irritation" to the frontline forces, the quantity of explosives they are able to deliver is relatively small, so their effect is relatively limited.  

However, an oil facility is very vulnerable to a relatively small-scale explosion, which can spread swiftly to destroy a crucial part of Russia's critical national infrastructure - more bang per buck.

So, although Ukraine desperately needs to stop Russia from breaking through its frontlines, we can expect to see Ukraine continue to target energy infrastructure as part of a broader strategy in its war with Russia.
