Introducing the Arena Tutor Win Prediction App

Last updated on July 22, 2022

In collaboration with Ryan Saxe and Bobby Mills

No one: ………..

Us: Yes, of course we can build you something to predict how many wins your draft deck is going to get!

As far as I know, this is the first time anyone has ever created a tool to help you “predict” how good a Magic deck will be. And especially the first time anyone has applied artificial intelligence and machine learning to such a task.

This is an amazing technical achievement, and hopefully the first of many similar features to come from Draftsim and our MTGA tracker and assistant , Arena Tutor.

For years I've had people ask me if there was a way to “score” their drafts on Draftsim. I think we've finally achieved that, and more. This statistic is more meaningful compared to any simulated draft score I could create because you are comparing yourself to other humans instead of to bots doing simulated drafts.

First things first, if you don't care about why this is awesome and how it works, and you just want to try the tool out, here's the link . And here's the link to Arena Tutor so you can have the functionality while you play Arena.

Download Arena Tutor to get predictions for your MTGA decks as soon as you finish building them.

Background and Methodology

This project is a collaboration between Arena Tutor (my developer/data scientist Bobby Mills and me) and limited writer and data scientist extraordinaire, Ryan Saxe. You may recall this isn't the first time we've worked with Ryan. He wrote an amazing article for us last year, called “ Bot Drafting the Hard Way .”

Bot Drafting the Hard Way

Instead of creating bots that made pick decisions with a deference to archetypes, this time we wanted to see if there was a way to assess the overall quality of a deck after the draft.

While before we only had the draft decks from Draftsim's draft simulator to use as a dataset, now we've got thousands of match results from Arena Tutor. Now we can actually determine what types of decks have better outcomes than others.

To start with, we analyzed over 200,000 matches from Zendikar Rising limited across MTGA.

To ensure we had enough data, we combined and normalized match results across both best of one and best of three drafts.

Ryan then took this data and created a neural network that looked at how the individual cards contributed to an overall “deck.”

The goal was to maximize the likelihood that the associated probability distribution of outcomes for the deck would be close to the expected number of wins for that deck.

Distribution of MTGA wins from win predictor model

A graphic illustrating the distribution of wins given a 50% win rate (in orange) vs the distribution of win predictions from the model (blue).

That process gave us the baseline we needed to say that the “prediction” is essentially the average number of wins that a deck like yours would get.

Model and Prediction Accuracy

And now I'll toss it to Ryan to give his mission statement for the model he created.

Understanding what makes a deck good or bad is one of the skills that separates the good from the great players. If you show a great player a draft deck, they could tell you how many wins they expect that deck to get. Given variance in the game, they can't always be spot on. However, it'll be rare for a good player to be off by more than two wins. I set out to devise a comparably good machine learning algorithm for predicting the number of wins for a draft on Arena. This machine learning algorithm learns a Gaussian distribution. It learns both the average number of expected wins, and the variance of that predicted average to describe the probability of getting any number of wins in a draft on Arena. Devising this model came with some challenges. How do you get the model to ever predict 6 or 7 wins when those quantities are rarer than 2 or 3 wins? Since decks only get played in one league, how can you learn a reasonable standard deviation without extra data points for that deck? While I can't get into it here, we have some very clever solutions to these problems, and our initial tests of this beta version show promise. The learned standard deviations are not huge (often around 1 win) and appropriately bound model error (it is extremely rare for the model to predict a mean that is not within two standard deviations of the true prediction). What this means is that the model may say “you're going to get 5 wins”, but instead you get 3 or 4, that can happen. But, just as I said at the beginning, that happens with human experts too! Ryan Saxe

Clarifying even further that the upper bounds are very rare, Ryan said,

For example, your deck needs to be INSANE if you want it to give you an expected number of wins of 5+.

And this is a product of how much data we have. So please try out Arena Tutor so we can get more! I think you'll love it. As it stands, this is the v0, proof of concept version of the win predictor. It'll only get better.

Try it Out Yourself

OK now the really exciting part – I'm going to show you how to test it out yourself.

I know we're on the verge of Kaldheim coming out, but don't worry — as soon as we have enough data we'll be adding that set to the win predictor as well.

As I mentioned above, there are two places that you can find this model — on the website and inside Arena Tutor.

On Draftsim's Website

If you don't have a decklist handy, the easiest way is probably to generate a simulated ZNR sealed pool on Draftsim. Then click the magic wand to autobuild a deck.

ZNR simulated sealed pool

I heavily recommend editing the deck a bit because the 40 cards in the suggested deck will be very simplistic and don't account for MDFCs, synergy etc.

After that, export your deck using the button in the “More” menu on the toolbar.

Export sealed deck from draftsim

Then head over to the web app and paste your decklist into the “Maindeck” text box.

Be sure to delete the sideboard and extra line that are copied from the list — the deck must be exactly 40 cards for the prediction to work .

trip arena prediction

Click the “Predict” button and you're good to go!

trip arena prediction

What are some other ways you could get a couple draft decks to test this out?

  • Export your current or saved draft decks directly out of MTGA
  • Grab one of your past Magic Online draft decks out of your user\Documents folder
  • Copy a deck from one of your previous drafts directly using the button in Arena Tutor
  • Manually type in the list from a physical draft deck you have laying around or from one of the many, many samples on our Twitter account Limited Decklists

The win predictor will work for any type of ZNR draft deck — you just need to format it properly!

Inside Arena Tutor

Of course, inside Arena Tutor, this process is seamless. Just save a new draft deck in MTGA and you'll automatically see the prediction come up on the lobby screen next to the deck's record .

Limitations, Caveats, Etc

I think you should first and foremost think of this app as a fun way to see how well you drafted compared to the average. It is certainly not an end-all-be-all, “you're going to get exactly this many wins” prediction oracle.

Omenspeaker art

The result you get from the app is a mean . So that means that your deck will get that result on average , based on what we have in our dataset. That's very specific.

If you're an above average player, great. And if you're below average… well, yeah.

Minority report tom cruise prediction

We've all drafted those decks that should get us arrested for a “precrime”…

And even if you consider the “range” that the app gives you — this is still only one standard deviation away. The match results are normally distributed (a bell curve), so that means that only 68% of results are captured within that range. It's still very possible to end up with results outside that range.

Finally, as I mentioned, we have limited data, which constrains the prediction accuracy a bit. As I'm writing this, we only had the data to generate a model for Zendikar Rising , however we're planning on adding this prediction functionality for all future sets — as soon as we have enough match results for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

We could write a book about this model, but here are some answers to things you might be wondering about the new application.

Hey! I got fewer wins than it said I would. I feel disappointed.

I'm sorry that happened. But remember, the prediction is just an average, and as we explained above, it's just as likely you'll fall below the average as above it.

Hey! This model is stupid. I got more wins than it said I would.

Congrats, you have achieved godlike drafter status!

Why does it only take exactly 40 cards?

The way the model is designed, everything changes when you add additional cards. Since the majority of sample data is overwhelmingly 40 card decks, we had to work with what we were given.

Can I get a best of three prediction instead?

I could see doing this in the future, but right now we don't have enough data. I love best of 3 draft (and since I'm an elitist Boomer, I still think it's the only way to play “real” Magic). But since BO1 is faster, is the only ranked format , and is put front-and-center in the MTGA user interface, there is way more data.

If you really want a prediction for a BO3 deck, I recommend just copying it into the win predictor web front end and getting a rough idea from the BO1 prediction.

I got a <bad response> error

The model is only trained on real decks that people played. So it's possible that there's not enough data to make a prediction for the deck you submitted.

But also make sure that you used exactly 40 cards, cards from Zendikar Rising , and clicked the captcha button.

We Want Your Feedback

trip arena prediction

Is there such a thing as MTG free will anymore?? Why even bother trying to change your future?

This is just the first version of this model, so we are definitely expecting it to have some kinks and opportunities for improvement. So give it a try and please let us know what you think.

Were the predictions you got good? What do you think we could improve? What other similar things do you wish we would do?

I’m sure you’ve got this before, but get predicted wins without lands or with only lands. Why do you think that is?

Avatar

This is because of the (relatively) small sample size. There aren’t very many decks (probably zero) that anyone submitted with no lands or with all lands. So the model doesn’t have any analogous situations to rely on to know that a deck like that is unworkable.

Correct Score Predictions & Tips

Modern football is about more than just tactics and scoring. It also requires sharp analytical skills.  To make correct score prediction, learning the right approach is key, but creating your own system is difficult. That is where our system can help because it uses a wealth of statistical data about expected goals, tailored for betting on football scores. With our system, you’ll master making accurate predictions quickly.

What is a Correct Score Prediction?

In the betting correct score prediction today is a prediction of the result of a match between two teams before the game is over. Bookmakers regularly offer a prediction with odds before the game starts. This is not just a forecast on whether a team will win, but on exactly what score the game will end with.

Betting on correct score prediction today involves guessing a match's final score before the game ends. Bookmakers offer odds on these predictions before the game starts. The odds are not just a forecast about who wins, they also suggest the exact score of the game. Take a Premier League match, for example. Say Manchester City plays Bournemouth at home. Today’s bookmakers' odds  forecast that Manchester City will win  2-0. If you're right, based on the bookmaker's odds, you win. So, to improve your chances of making profitable bets, it is important to use statistics in daily predictions .

Correct score tips by xGscore

Correct score betting is not easy, but there are several ways to increase your chances of making winning bets. The Poisson distribution system makes calculations about the likely score of the game. A bet on scoring games is calculated using probabilities. These probabilities are based on events that:

  • Can occur within a specific time period.
  • Can be quantified.
  • Are independent of one another.
  • Have no maximum limit.

This method helps pinpoint the right bet for the total goals scored in a game. Each bet is given a specific weight in the calculation. This weight varies based on several factors like the date, location, match result, and the opposing team's strength.

We then use the Poisson distribution to determine the actual score. This gives us the probability of each team scoring a certain number of goals. For example, there might be a 20% chance a team won't score at all, a 30% chance for one goal, 25% for two, 10% for three, and 5% for four goals. The likelihood of more than four goals is usually less than 1%.

Using these calculations, we form more accurate odds. With our tip on probability, bettors can more accurately determine match results through mathematical calculations.

Correct Score Probability

Understanding probability is essential before making a correct football prediction . Probability is the key factor when making a prediction. Today, when you look at any tournament, the lowest odds are usually for results like a zero draw or a 1-0 win. This is consistent across any league, as such outcomes are most common in soccer.

Moreover, a 2:1 or 1:2 score in a match is highly probable, especially when two evenly matched teams play, or teams favor an aggressive attacking style. For these popular scores in football (1:1, 0:1, 1:0, 2:1, 1:2), the odds typically range from 8 to 16%. While matches can end with a hockey score (4:3) or a tennis score (6:1), these are less likely. However, if you make such a bet and it wins, you could earn from 100x to 200x your stake.

How to bet on football score?

Predicting the probability of a match result requires extensive work. Key to this is the analysis of recent games between the teams and their performance in the tournament. In the betting industry, users usually focus on betting on one match and its specific outcome.

Experienced bettors often bet on a combination of odds. While these bets can yield higher earnings, they also carry greater risk. For instance, by betting a double accumulator bet on a 1:1 result at odds of 7.00 and on 1:2 at odds of 12.00, a player can increase their winnings by 84 times.

Another approach is to place soccer bets on correct results for several matches with high odds. If the odds are 7.00, making five one-dollar bets and winning one will cover the total investment.

For easier prediction, users can analyze our predictions and observe other bettors' reactions. At the top of this page, users can express agreement or disagreement with our bets by selecting likes or dislikes for the results.

Miami heat at denver nuggets odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

trip arena prediction

The Miami Heat (33-25) wrap up a 6-game road trip against the Denver Nuggets (40-19) Thursday at Ball Arena. Tip-off for this NBA Finals rematch is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (TNT). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s  lines around the Heat vs. Nuggets odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions .

Season series: First meeting; Nuggets swept 2-0 in regular-season series in 2022-23, and won 4-1 in the 2023 NBA Finals

The Heat picked up a 106-96 win as 7-point road favorites last time out, Tuesday at the Portland Trail Blazers. Miami is a perfect 5-0 straight up (SU) on the road trip, and have won 7 of the past 8 outings. Even more impressive is that Miami is on an 8-0 against-the-spread (ATS) run. The Under has cashed in 6 of the past 7 contests, too.

Miami has won 5 of the past 6 tries against the Western Conference, while also going 5-1 ATS in those outings. The Under is 7-1 in the previous 8 tries against Western Conference opponents.

The Nuggets registered a 117-96 win against the Sacramento Kings Wednesday night, cashing as 9-point favorites as the Under (227.5) cashed. Denver has won and covered 4 in a row, while the Under is on a 13-4 run in the past 17 games dating back to Jan. 19.

Denver has won 3 of the past 4 games against Eastern Conference foes, but it is just 3-6-1 ATS in the past 10 tries against the East. The Under is 7-1 in the past 8 outings against Eastern Conference opponents.

Heat at Nuggets picks and predictions

Nuggets 108, Heat 101

The Nuggets (-180) will cost you just shy of 2 times your potential return, and that’s a little too expensive for a standalone wager in this marquee game. As part of a multi-team parlay, including Denver isn’t the end of the world, although it does suck some of the value out of your ticket.

Miami (+166) is a tempting play since it has won all 5 games on the current road trip and is 9-2 SU in the past 11 games.

AVOID  and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

The NUGGETS -4.5 (- 110 ) are worth a look in this Finals rematch in the Mile High City. Denver covered its most recent game when playing on no rest last Friday, it is just 4-7 ATS in 11 games when playing the 2nd end of a back-to-back. So, tread lightly.

While the Heat have covered 8 in a row, they’re just 2-8 ATS in the past 10 tries against the Nuggets, including last season’s championship series.

Miami has been hot against the number, but Denver is no slouch either, covering the past 4 outings. This is a giant game, and the Nuggets lately have been playing their best when the lights are the brightest.

UNDER 214  (- 108 ) is the play in this marquee battle in Denver.

The Under has connected in 4 of the past 6 games, and 13 of the past 17 outings for the Nuggets. At home, the total has gone low in 6 of the past 8 contests.

For the defensive-minded Heat, the total has gone low in 6 of the past 7 games, while the Under is 22-6 in the past 28 contests.

We Asked Experts From Around The World To Predict The Biggest Travel Trends of 2024

trip arena prediction

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

One should approach the task of forecasting travel trends with some humility. For one thing, there’s the utter unknowability of the future, which is not only a central fact of the human condition but a big reason why it’s so hard to plan a vacation.

Let’s say the smart set heads off to Portugal ( as they did in 2023 ). Then, the Tik-Tokers descend on it with all their needy, ignorant misbehavior , and by the time you get there, the whole vibe at Belem Tower is wrecked.

Say you lock down a visit to San Francisco because you hear it’s making a comeback , but suddenly the luxe magazines send you packing to Detroit . The Middle East is proclaimed a rising destination on October 4 ( this actually happened ), and by October 7, all hell breaks loose.

Travel is about fresh adventures and you want to know about the places, activities, and offerings ahead. So let’s ignore the rear-view mirror, stand on the hood, and take a peek over the horizon at travel trends of 2024.

I talked to nearly 20 people whose livelihoods depend on their ability to forecast travelers’ preferences, behaviors, and moods. I interviewed industry analysts, travel advisors, trip packagers, PR pros, travel journalists, and various people that somehow seem to travel for a living (I want that job).

And I’ve got some guidance for the year ahead.

So place your tray tables in the locked and upright position, stow your personal items under the seat in front of you (say, is that the Travelpro Maxlite 5 that was so hot in ‘23?), and let’s get you to 2024 on time.

But please keep your seatbelt securely fastened, even after the captain has turned off the seatbelt sign. We expect a bit of turbulence.

The Rialto Bridge over Venice's Grand Canal

Hottest Destination Of 2024: Elsewhere

In 2024, Venice, Italy, will become the first city in the world to implement a fee just to enter. The crowds during peak season swamp the city of canals, creating stifling throngs at St. Mark’s, long lines at restaurants, and grumpy gondoliers. The mayor of Venice says the new 5-euro charge is an attempt to “protect the city from mass tourism.”

Nearly everyone I talked to factored into their 2024 travel forecasts the impact of over-tourism. The trend hit a tipping point in 2023, powered in part by a wave of post-pandemic “revenge travel.” Bucket-listers looking to make up lost time before they actually kick the bucket contributed too.

After COVID, “people realized life is short, and if I don’t travel now, then when?” said David Swanson, who has been a travel writer for over 30 years.

“People realized life is short, and if I don’t travel now, then when?”

Speaking of trends, social media influencers are also to blame for excessive visitation. Tik Tokers create thousands of videos at iconic tourism locations. Their hordes of followers soon do the same. Beloved places at risk of being beloved to death by influencers include the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the ruins at Machu Picchu.

In response to all of this, some destinations are upping fees or blocking access. A Vermont town closed a road after influencers — some of whom brought portable wardrobe changing rooms — overran one of the state’s most popular leaf-peeping spots. They trampled vegetation and even defecated in the woods.

Three national parks — including Glacier, Arches, and Rocky Mountain — will introduce timed entry passes in 2024.

Vivek Neb, managing director of travel and tourism for consulting firm Escalent, says some destinations subject to over-tourism are approving fewer tourist visas. They’re also micro-marketing to wealthy travelers to keep revenue up as visitor numbers decline.

Meanwhile, Swanson is skeptical that Venice’s 5-euro fee will do much good. “Why is admission to one of the world’s greatest and most endangered architectural miracles priced less than a bus ride?” he asks. Swanson would up it to 100 euros for a week-long pass.

Snowy scene in Niseko, Japan

Don’t Go There

Luckily, every trend carries the seeds of its counter-trend.

And for the first time, American Express’s annual Trending Destinations report focuses not on the hot, hip, and happenin’ spots, but on places to go instead.

Thinking of Sapporo, Japan? Amex suggests the less-visited Niseko. Planning to hit Sedona? No, head to Santa Fe.

Expedia is on-trend too, providing for 2024 travelers the following “dupe” sites (they borrow the “dupe” term from a popular Tik Tok hashtag): Taipei, Taiwan, instead of Seoul, South Korea; Paros, Greece, instead of Santorini; Perth, Australia, instead of Sydney.

Some 2024 travelers are already getting ahead of trend-spotters. At travelinsurance.com , an online broker of travel insurance policies, company co-founder Stan Sandberg says he’s already seeing off-the-beaten-path travel increasing for 2024, with bookings to 25 more countries than last year. Andorra, Palau, and Grenada are newly popular.

Additional off-the-beaten-path places cited by our sources:

  • Everett Potter — a tour guide for National Geographic Expeditions, travel columnist for Forbes, and publisher of Everett Potter’s Travel Report — sees new buzz around Norway, Slovenia, and Romania.
  • Henley Vazquez — co-founder of travel agency Fora Travel — says she’s seeing a jump in 2024 bookings for Bhutan, the Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas, as well as the Spanish island of Majorca.
  • David Swanson — the veteran journalist — says Greenland is starting to draw more interest, especially from expedition cruisers.
  • VBT — a long-tenured biking, walking, and multi-sport touring company — says its hottest destination for 2024 is Croatia.

Fares: Up In The Air For 2024

The bad news is, in 2024, you shouldn’t expect relief from the trend of airlines quoting very low fares then charging you to pick a seat or bring a carry-on.

“People hate sitting in the middle seat,” says Robert Cole, senior analyst for hospitality and leisure travel for Phocuswright, a travel research firm. “Airlines know they’ll pay money to avoid it. So they’re not going to stop charging.”

In fact, Cole sees the nickel-and-diming trend spreading to hotels, cruises, and maybe rental cars.

Peter Greenberg — travel editor for CBS News and host of the PBS show Travel Detective with Peter Greenberg — explains that the fees are a sly tax play by airlines; air fares are subject to the 7.5 percent federal excise tax, which increases costs for passengers. Fees are not taxed, allowing airlines to pocket most of them as profits.

Greenberg sees relief coming in 2024 only in the form of “greater transparency” for add-on fees, rather than a reduction.

The benefit of upcharges is the expansion in availability of “comfort class” on most airlines — seats with extra legroom and the ability to board earlier. “You might pay $19 or $54 more, but that’s so worth it to many people,” says Everett Potter.

More good news for 2024 is that you’re probably less likely to fall victim to the kind of cancellation nightmares thousands of travelers dealt with in 2022 and early 2023, says Katy Nastro, travel expert for airfare deals service Going.com .

Cancellation rates in 2023 were less than half of 2022’s, says Nastro, and are trending better into 2024. “Airlines have made some operational improvements and investments” that make “mass shambolic” cancellation events less likely, she says.

Airlines have an economic incentive to avoid that problem, says Greenberg.

“Southwest set the expectation by paying not only for hotels and rental cars for stranded passengers, but meals and things like pet and child care,” he continued. “They and other airlines will feel pressure to do the same in future mass cancellation events.”

As for ticket costs, “prices have kind of normalized” after the wild swings driven by low demand during the pandemic and huge demand afterwards, says Nastro. Ticket prices sit at 2006 levels when adjusted for inflation and Nastro is hopeful for 2024.

Greenberg points out that in the fall of 2023, fares to Europe from U.S. gateways were as low as the mid-$300s, as airlines shifted planes from domestic to international routes, increasing capacity.

The losers in 2024 are some U.S. cities whose routes have been stripped. “If you live in Toledo, you may have to drive to Detroit to fly,” continues Greenberg.

Acropolis Hill in Athens, Greece

When Hot Spots Overheat

Many sources mentioned the impacts of global warming on travel. Specifically the way it’s making some places unbearable in the summer.

In 2023, tourists in Rome suffered temperatures of up to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. In Greece, officials closed the Acropolis to protect people from the sun. Europe was so hot, they actually named the heatwave Cerberus , which in Greek mythology is the multi-headed Hound of Hell.

Travelers’ plans are changing.

“In the past, I’ve had a hard time getting clients to consider Switzerland in the summer,” says Fora Travel’s Henley Vazquez. “Now they go, and they absolutely love it.”

Several other sources suggest 2024 might be a good time to change your latitude.

Of the many rising and perennial destinations mentioned by the people I talked to, choices to avoid summer heat include: Copenhagen (average summer temperature 68–71); Quebec (71–77); Dublin (65–68); Oslo (71–73); Portland, Maine (73–78); and Iceland (a chilly 50–55).

Meanwhile, Orlando will be shimmering at 92, Bangkok steaming at 93, and Phoenix afire at 104.

You can avoid both the heat and the crowds with a strategic approach to your itinerary, suggests Chantal Gouveia of Kensington Tours . “Change the where and the when,” she says. Choose a secondary destination to avoid the throngs and visit sometime other than the summer for relief from punishing temperatures.

Pickleball players in Pompano Beach, Florida

Pickleball Mania Travels Everywhere

You had to know this one was coming. Tourism around pickleball — the wildly popular sport that mixes ping-pong and tennis — is a thing for 2024.

Courts are multiplying in resorts, hotels, and cruise ships (including river cruises). Lessons and friendly tournaments are scheduled for guests.

It may sound like April Fool’s, but one resort — the Tryall Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica — employs a pickleball concierge . The staffer will provide paddles, balls, and athletic wear, help reserve a court or a lesson, and coordinate with the chef to provide a pickleball post-game meal.

Shoulder Season Is So Over

Everett Potter was in Italy’s Lake Como area in October. “I couldn’t believe how crowded it was,” he says. “I didn’t get elbowed in the eye by someone taking a selfie, but it was nearly that bad.”

Deals during shoulder season — the months before and after high season, long preferred by bargain-seekers and travelers without school-age kids — have been “eradicated” in many destinations, he says.

Vazquez agrees that for 2024, shoulder-season discounts are vanishing as occupancies rise in what had been the off months.

2023 James Beard Restaurant And Chef Awards

Eat The World

According to Hilton’s most recent travel trend report, culinary experiences are the top focus for more than half of travelers. Of those travelers, 86 percent are looking for authentic local or regional cuisine .

The problem is that authentic cuisine drawn from local ingredients by a chef who knows the culture isn’t easy to find. Online reviews take you only so far.

The James Beard Foundation is making it easier to find independent, local, and chef-driven places around the country. Its 2023 awards included restaurants in Kansas City, Missouri; Madison, Wisconsin; and Boise, Idaho. (Find nominees and winners in any city using the awards search feature on its website.)

“What’s happening in food in every little pocket of this country right now is very exciting,” says Kris Moon, president of the Beard Foundation. He cites the small Ozarks town of Bentonville , Arkansas, a rising tourism destination that has seen three recent Beard semi-finalists.

Many destinations are stitching together food “trails” to make it easier to identify and enjoy local cuisine. And in 2024, there will be more food trails than ever. There’s the Salsa Trail in Arizona, the Chocolate Trail in Connecticut, and the A to Z Foodie Trail in Iowa.

In 2024, you’ll be among the earliest travelers to the Ground Steak Trail in Surry, North Carolina.

Going Green(ish)

For over 20 years, airlines, destinations, hotels, and tour operators have been cleaning up their operations to reduce environmental impacts. Booking.com and Expedia display icons to designate a property’s sustainability performance. They offer data on airlines’ green-ery, but will they actually drive travelers’ choices in 2024?

“I see those notes about this flight having lower emissions than this one,” says David Swanson. “I’ve never made a decision based on that.”

If traveling green sounds a bit dowdy and earnest, it doesn’t have to be. A favorite of Henley Vazquez is 1 Hotel Group , which has what she calls “hip and hot” hotels in places like South Beach and West Hollywood. They also happen to hit many highlights of the sustainability checklist.

Terika Haynes — founder of Dynamite Travel , a small luxury travel agency — likes small properties like Rancho Santana in Nicaragua. It offers the usual villas and spas and culinary experiences you find at higher-end properties. The resort serves food from its own organic farm, composts leftovers to feed the garden, and uses local craftspeople to build furniture and finishings.

Perhaps the biggest impact you can have this year, regardless of where you travel, comes from doing small things likely to lead to the best experiences anyway.

“By going to restaurants that are locally owned and operated, your dollars directly support families and small businesses,” says Kaitlyn Brajcich, senior manager of communications & training at Sustainable Travel International.

“You can make choices that will result in your dollars going directly into local communities,” she continues. But this is no small thing. The UN Tourism Organization reports that in the Caribbean, less than 20 percent of travel dollars stay with local economies .

Disney Cruise Line multigenerational family on the beach

Talking About My Multigeneration

The peak year of mid-century births was 1957, meaning the bulk of boomers will be around 67 in 2024. That’s old enough for them to have kids and for their kids to have kids. And so, sources say multigenerational travel — where the whole messy clan travels together — is booming.

Patty Monahan, founder of Our Whole Village , says the post-pandemic trend of multigenerational travel is extending into 2024 bookings. The key to a great multi-gen trip, she says, is “balancing the multiple needs and interests” of groups that span grandparents through grandkids.

Villas, cruises, dude ranches, or resorts where you have a “home base” and can access a range of activities work well, she says. The grandparents do a cooking class while the grandkids and parents go rafting, for instance. “They don’t need to do everything together, every day.”

This plays out across price points.

Family travel “makes us rethink what ‘luxury’ means,” says Marisa Ship of Kensington Tours, which creates bespoke trips for high-end travelers. For families, it’s “less about five-star accommodations and more about helping create memories that stay with them forever,” she says.

Kensington has a partnership with Ancestry.com, which deepens the possibilities of family travel across generations. Even before you pick a destination, you can work with a genealogist to identify ancestors and plan a visit around places that connect with them. This can include graveyards, churches, family homes, or other heritage sites.

“If you want to visit the bar where your grandfather drank beer, we can do that,” Ship says.

Public rental e-bikes in London

E-Bike On Your Left

E-bikes, regular bikes with small electric motors that provide a gentle assist, will merge into mainstream travel in 2024. For example, they’re drawing bike-touring people beyond the spandex-and-clunky-shoe crowd that has been at the heart of the market for years. The trips are especially popular with 50-plus travelers who are not, strictly speaking, “bikers.”

“We believe e-bikes have brought new active travelers who were reluctant to commit to a bike trip in the past,” says Bob Greeneisen, assistant director of operations for Backroads , a high-end bike-tour company. Backroads began its transition to e-bikes in 2013 with 150 bikes and enters 2024 with a fleet of 4,500. Bike touring company VBT says e-bikes now comprise “a large majority” of its fleet.

E-bikes are getting integrated into surprising travel niches. On all its luxe Rhine and Danube River tours, Scenic Cruises offers independent or guided e-biking, allowing side trips to castles, vineyards, and small towns that provide fresh air and no van rides necessary.

Expect e-options on your next city visit too, as urban bike providers rush to transition to e-bikes . In San Antonio, I recently spent a wonderful half-day touring the four Spanish missions located along a well-paved, 10-mile path riding an e-bike and I didn’t break a sweat.

Heartland Flyer Amtrak train fall foliage

Rail Inches Along In 2024

We know you’re hoping to hear that high-speed rail will finally be coming to America in 2024.

Amtrak will introduce next-generation, high-speed trains along its D.C.-to-Boston Acela route. The new trains travel precisely 10 miles per hour faster — up to 160 miles per hour — than the old ones. But dated tracks prevent the trains from actually hitting that speed.

A few changes coming to domestic rail travel in 2024:

  • Amtrak will add capacity from its Chicago-to-St. Paul route , which skims along Lake Michigan and stops at some popular travel destinations, including Wisconsin Dells and Milwaukee.
  • Long-awaited service from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans, dubbed the Mardi Gras Express , debuts.
  • Amtrak’s new “ Night Owl ” fares along the Northeast Corridor are so low they look like a misprint. From 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., a trip from Washington, D.C. to New York is $10. Boston to New Haven costs $5. The company promises “room to stretch out or curl up,” “no middle seats ever,” and access to quiet cars.

Going To Pot

As states and countries continue to legalize recreational pot, cannabis tourism is likely to grow in 2024. Travel Agent Central reports that 29 percent of travelers express interest in pot-related travel.

Typical marijuana tourism options include “bud and breakfast” visits and “high-dining” venues. One cannabis tourism agency, Cannabis Tours , can book you in a “420-friendly hotel” (the number is a kind of in-joke among smokers with its provenance uncertain) and related activities, like painting watercolors while high.

The Washington Post rounded up tips for pot travelers . Visit only licensed dispensaries, carry cash, and consult with staff about the punch that individual products can pack.

2023 A.I. Safety Summit

Artificial Intelligence Meets Real Travel

You may have heard about the spate of travel guidebooks generated by artificial intelligence (or A.I.). Some are hysterically bad.

One guide to Washington, D.C. , identified by Washingtonian magazine, features a photo of Sacramento’s capitol building on the cover. It directs kayakers to Rock Creek Lake, which doesn’t exist. It recommends a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the National Arboretum, which is 3 miles from the memorial’s actual location on the National Mall.

This suggests 2024 may be a good year to get your guidance from trusted publishing brands. (Might we recommend TravelAwaits ? Because A.I. did not write this story.)

But A.I. is likely to improve some consumer experiences for travelers very soon, says Vivek Neb. By consuming vast amounts of data about both you and the world, A.I.-powered tools will eventually become “like your friend who knows you and can tell you places you might like.”

Lydia Schrandt, president of the Society of American Travel Writers with a master’s in data science, says she’d be “very surprised” if by the end of 2024 most online travel companies weren’t doing things like automatically “spinning up personalized itineraries” via A.I.

“The more information they have about your preferences, the better they can customize an itinerary based on what you’re likely to want to do,” she says.

Robert Cole of Phocuswright sees great potential for A.I. in customer service. For example, if your flight is delayed and you’re likely to miss a connection, you now have to call or stand in line. “But with A.I., airlines can be proactive,” he says. You might just get a text saying that you’ve been rebooked on a later connecting flight. Expect only incremental progress toward that in 2024, he says.

Tottenham vs Arsenal: Preview, predictions and lineups

  • Tottenham host Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon
  • The Gunners are chasing a first Premier League title in two decades
  • Lilywhites are still hunting Champions League qualification

By Ewan Ross-Murray | 3:00 AM GMT+1

A huge north London derby awaits

A north London derby of colossal proportions takes place this Sunday when title-chasing Arsenal travel to top-four hopefuls Tottenham.

Both sides are desperate for all three points and bragging rights this weekend in a game that could have enormous ramifications, and the thrilling 2-2 draw between the sides earlier this season suggests the upcoming encounter could be a wild ride.

Arsenal realistically need victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium if they have any hope of lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of the season, with Manchester City just a point behind them with a game in hand. Triumphing over their local rivals would certainly pile the pressure on Pep Guardiola's side ahead of their clash with Nottingham Forest later on Sunday.

Tottenham have their own ambitions this season, although the possibility of denying Arsenal the title is an extra motivation. The Lilywhites are still chasing Champions League qualification, making Sunday's battle a pivotal one considering they still have to face Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea this term.

Here is 90min's guide to Tottenham vs Arsenal this weekend.

What time does Tottenham vs Arsenal kick-off?

  • Location : London, England
  • Stadium : Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Date : Sunday 28 April
  • Kick-off Time : 14:00 BST / 09:00 ET / 06:00 PT
  • Referee : Michael Oliver
  • VAR : Jarred Gillett

Tottenham vs Arsenal H2H record (Last Five Games)

Destiny Udogie

Tottenham do have a few injury concerns ahead of the north London derby but the good news for Ange Postecoglou is that both Pedro Porro and Richarlison are available ahead of the crunch clash.

However, Spurs will have to cope without Destiny Udogie at left-back, with the Italian out until the start of next season, while Oliver Skipp is also unavailable for Arsenal's visit.

Manor Solomon, Ryan Sessegnon and Fraser Forster are all sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

Tottenham predicted lineup vs Arsenal

Tottenham predicted lineup (4-3-3) : Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Davies; Bentancur, Sarr, Maddison; Johnson, Son, Werner.

Arsenal team news

Jurrien Timber

Mikel Arteta will be delighted with the fitness of his squad heading into the final few games of the season, with the Spaniard able to field a full-stength lineup for the trip to Spurs.

The only slight concern is Jurrien Timber, who has been out since the opening day of the season with an ACL tear, with Arteta suggesting that the Dutchman could be involved in some capacity against Tottenham on Sunday.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Tottenham

Arsenal predicted lineup (4-3-3) : Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu; Partey, Rice, Odegaard; Saka, Havertz, Trossard.

Tottenham vs Arsenal score prediction

This may be Arsenal 's trickiest remaining match of the season, especially given the hatred between the sides, but the Gunners are in such good form that you can't bet against another win at Spurs. Tottenham haven't played in two weeks and may therefore be a tad rusty for Sunday's match.

While Tottenham certainly have the tools to cause the Gunners issues, Arsenal's attack should punish a Spurs backline that struggle to keep clean sheets. While it could go either way, the visitors look the more likely to claim the bragging rights.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-3 Arsenal

How to Save Money on Your Next Flight With an Airfare Predictor

Experts share clever tricks for playing and winning the airfare-forecast game.

Save on your next flight with these tools.

The art of determining when to purchase airfare has long puzzled price-sensitive fliers. And it's no wonder why: With fluctuating prices, it's hard to know when to buy or delay booking to secure the cheapest tickets. While some air-travel experts dismiss airfare predictors as an accurate measure of flight pricing trends, innovative apps and tools such as Hopper, Google Flights and Kayak that aim to take the guesswork out of predicting when prices will surge or plummet make it tempting to give this elusive farecasting technology a test run.

[See: 10 Frequent Flier Secrets Every Traveler Should Know .]

So, can these tech-savvy tools precisely predict future airfare pricing? That's a matter of debate. "No one has done an in-depth study as to whether airfare predictors work," cautions George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com, who's been following airfare trends for over 20 years. "Remember Farecast?" Hobica asks, recalling the airfare-prediction technology Microsoft bought in 2008. "Microsoft bought [Farecast] for millions and rebranded it as Bing Travel, and promptly shut it down. It stands to reason that if one airfare search engine could accurately predict airfare trends, all the others would have been buried by now," Hobica explains.

But while contemplating the tools' price prediction capabilities is one thing, utilizing the complex technology to track fares and smartly assess when to buy or wait to book your plane ticket is another task altogether. With that in mind, U.S. News sought guidance from industry pros and data experts to bring you a primer on using airfare prediction tools to net the best results.

Decide Which Tool Fits Your Needs and Patterns

All of the price prediction tools "work a little differently," explains Brian Sumers, an airline business reporter at Skift. Tools such as Google Flights and Hopper use historical pricing data along with other metrics to evaluate ticket prices based on the aggregate, he explains. And while flight-predicting apps like Hopper have gained popularity, Sumers says Google Flights is the resource to watch, as Google can utilize its extensive data collection to develop sophisticated algorithms. But remember these sites and apps won't get it right 100 percent of the time, he cautions. "If you see a price that you think is fair, you should buy it," Sumers says.

What are the key differences with these tools? Hopper alerts travelers when they should fly and buy based on data-driven research, explains Patrick Surry, Hopper's chief data scientist. "We use our historical flight price data and our real-time feed of 5 to 8 billion daily flight prices to create trip-specific pricing forecasts up to a year in advance of departure, based on current and historical yield trends as well as pricing volatility," he explains. According to Surry, the price forecasts are estimated with 95 percent accuracy. And unlike its competitors, Hopper enables users to select the "Watch This Trip" option to track airfares and receive a push notification within a minute if a good deal pops up, Surry adds. "Overall, our users save an average of $150 per year on their air travel using the app," he says. The only snag: While Hopper analyzes flights from over 250 global airlines, a few airlines are not currently available, including Southwest and Delta.

[See: 9 Tips for Navigating an Outrageously Long Flight Delay .]

Google Flights, on the other hand, doesn't currently offer an app for snapping up deals on the fly. However, it does offer a few key benefits, including the chance to filter options based on your desired cabin class and number of stops and the ability to track a specific flight. When a ticket price is likely to rise, Google sends a mobile or email notification to its users. What's more, Google enables users to view the precise price fluctuation in real time, down to the hour, to snag a price that's likely to rise soon. Online booking site Kayak also tracks billions of price queries to analyze historical pricing and forecast future pricing. While the algorithm only allows users to see whether the price is likely to increase or fall in the next week, Kayak does offer guidance on when to book – or wait – to help travelers know when to purchase to score the best value.

Hedge Your Bets

Flyr, a newer tool in the price-prediction arena, offers guidance on when to book using a different approach. With its FareKeep insurance product (available for a small fee), which analyzes the volatility of ticket costs, you can track your flight and arm yourself against price fluctuations. "Our product not only offers protection against price changes, it allows travelers to use those changes to their advantage. If you end up booking the fare at a higher price during the protection period, we’ll pay you back the difference – up to $200 per protected passenger," explains Jean Tripier, co-founder and chief executive of Flyr. "If your fare goes down, we will notify you, and you get to book at the lower price," he adds.

Aside from assessing and covering the financial risk associated with purchasing your ticket, Flyr also analyzes pricing on a specific flight, rather than simply analyzing the route. "With all this data, we created Foresight, our prediction engine that provides ultra-accurate fare forecasts, down to the detail of an individual flight," Tripier explains, noting the algorithms utilize "artificial intelligence to achieve the highest possible degree of accuracy." With the Foresight predictor, the tool offers a buy or wait recommendation with more than 90 percent accuracy, Tripier adds. "In addition, we have the capacity to predict where prices will land a week from today within about $6 on flights for common routes or destinations," he explains.

Fine-Tune Your Ticket-Hunting Strategy

According to Tripier, while prices tend to spike as the departure date approaches, fare trends are more nuanced: "What actually happens is that the volatility of the fares increases as the departure date nears. While this more often than not signals a fare going up, it can also go down. The bottom line is that travelers should watch fares as early as possible and use fare protection to improve the efficiency of that process for them."

[See: 7 Secret Tricks to Scoring a Cheap Business-Class Seat .]

Surry also recommends setting up trip-monitoring services months ahead of your trip to allow for ample time to turn up an enticing deal . "The mobile component is really important, too," he explains. "These deals can pop up at any time and sometimes don’t last very long."

Mar 6, 2024; Coral Gables, Florida, USA; Miami Hurricanes guard Wooga Poplar (5) celebrates after

© Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky reaches out to former Miami Hurricane in the transfer portal

Mark Pope is still contacting talent in the portal.

  • Author: Andrew Stefaniak

In this story:

Mark Pope missed out on Richie Saunders in the portal as he decided to go back to BYU, but now the staff has moved on to another really talented big guard in the portal.

Coach Pope reached out to former Miami Hurricane Wooga Poplar, who averaged 13.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game last season for the Hurricanes. He shot 38.5% from deep last season, which was good for a carer high for the guard from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Poplar and the Hurricanes came to Rupp Arena for what was at the time a top-25 showdown, but the Wildcats won this game big. While the Wildcats were able to secure the 95-73 win over Miami, Poplar had a massive game, scoring 19 points. He was 7-13 from the field in this game. He also added eight rebounds and two steals to the stat line during his trip to Lexington.

Poplar is also a big guard, standing 6'5 and weighing 197 pounds, so he can take the ball to the rim while also being a really good three-point shooter.

Poplar just recently entered the transfer portal and is hearing from schools, so we will know more about this recruitment when he decides to take a visit to Lexingotn or not.

Having watched Poplar play live as much of Big Blue Nation has, I can say he is a really good player who would fit in well to Coach Pope's offensive style as he can cut to the rim, drive the ball, and shoot.

This is a name to remember as Coach Pope looks to fill his first roster as Kentucky's head coach.

2024 Kentucky Derby predictions, odds, horses, contenders: Surprising picks by top horse racing insider

When is the 2024 kentucky derby the annual run for the roses takes place saturday, may 4 at churchill downs.

churchill2cbs.jpg

Jockey Joel Rosario will be inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame on August 2, but inscribers may want to wait until after the 2024 Kentucky Derby before finishing his plaque. Rosario will ride Track Phantom in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs as he seeks his second Kentucky Derby victory, a feat which would make its way onto that Hall of Fame plaque. Rosario is a regular at Churchill Downs, as the Kentucky Derby 2024 will be his 13th start at the race over the last 15 years. He's finished in the money just twice, but did win aboard Orb in 2013. Orb was the post-draw favorite back then, while Track Phantom is a 20-1 longshot in the 2024 Kentucky Derby odds after drawing the No. 12 post at Saturday's 2024 Kentucky Derby post position draw.

Florida Derby winner Fierceness is the 5-2 favorite for the race on Saturday, May 4, while Blue Grass Stakes winner Sierra Leone is 3-1. The 2024 Kentucky Derby post time is 6:57 p.m. ET. With the Kentucky Derby annually featuring the largest field in North American racing, you'll want to  see what Santa Anita-based racing reporter and analyst Michelle Yu has to say before making any 2024 Kentucky Derby picks, considering the success she's had handicapping this race .

Few people in racing are as well-connected as Yu. An on-air host and reporter who has provided racing analysis for TVG, HRTV and the Breeders' Cup, Yu has spent a lifetime in racing. Prior to her television career, she worked for trainers Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She also is married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.

Yu also has tremendous handicapping chops. In a wide-open Kentucky Derby in 2021, she gave out Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the winner at 12-1. In Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager two years ago, she suggested a play on All Other 3-Year-Olds, which cashed at a whopping 18-1 when Rich Strike won the Derby.

Yu enters this year's Kentucky Derby on a roll. She correctly called National Treasure to win the Pegasus World Cup. In the month leading up to the Kentucky Derby, she predicted Stronghold's upset win in the Santa Anita Derby and smashed the exacta in the Apple Blossom Handicap.

For the first leg of the Triple Crown, Yu has handicapped the 2024 Kentucky Derby lineup, made her picks and constructed her best bets. You can head to SportsLine now to see them .

Top 2024 Kentucky Derby predictions

One surprise: Yu is fading Fierceness, even though he is the 5-2 Kentucky Derby favorite. The only consistent aspect about Fierceness is his inconsistency. He's alternated wins and losses through five starts, so every time he builds up faith in bettors' eyes with a victory, he has a tendency to then let them down in the following race. Thus, a Florida Derby win in his last start could be cause for concern for the Kentucky Derby 2024.

Owner Mike Repole of Repole Stable has sent seven previous starters to Churchill Downs and left disappointed each time. None of the seven have even finished on the board, and they have an average finish of 12.1. Given that history and Fierceness' up-and-down nature, Yu isn't getting behind the horse at these short 2024 Kentucky Derby odds. Yu told SportsLine, "He has thrown in the towel the two times someone eyeballed him. Unless Fierceness matures mentally between now and the Kentucky Derby, which is not impossible, I think owner Mike Repole will again leave Louisville disappointed."

Another curveball: Yu is high on Just a Touch, even though he's a longshot at 10-1 in the Kentucky Derby odds 2024. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Trained by Cox, Just a Touch has one win and two seconds in three career starts. He is coming off a runner-up finish to Sierra Leone in the Blue Grass Stakes.

Yu likes that Just a Touch has improved with every start. He earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure when winning his six-furlong debut and improved that figure to a 90 in the Gotham Stakes. His Blue Grass effort earned a 96 Beyer. "This is the kind of year that a horse with one lifetime win can capture the blanket of roses with the right trip," Yu told SportsLine.  You can see all of Yu's 2024 Kentucky Derby bets here .

How to make 2024 Kentucky Derby picks

Moreover, Yu's top pick is a horse who "will be happy to get the added ground" at Churchill Downs. She's also high on a massive double-digit longshot who "showed some grit" in his last race. She is including these horses in her 2024 Kentucky Derby bets, and so should you.  She's sharing which 2024 Kentucky Derby horses to back at SportsLine .

So who wins the 2024 Kentucky Derby? What double-digit longshot is a must-back? And how has Yu constructed her wagers?  Visit SportsLine to see Yu's picks for the Kentucky Derby, all from the Santa Anita-based racing insider who has a long history of success in the Kentucky Derby , and find out.

A Michigan community is mourning after a student died suddenly while on a school trip to a robotics competition in Texas last week.

The student "suddenly passed away," Lake Orion High School confirmed with USA TODAY Tuesday, but did not identify the student. The school is located in Orion Township, about 40 miles north of Detroit.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community," superintendent Ben Kirby said in a statement sent out to the student body on Friday, obtained by USA TODAY.

"Today, Friday, April 19, one of our current high school students suddenly passed away. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends," the statement continued.

Officials have not identified the student.

Student was attending Robotics World Championship

The school's principal, Dan Hass, informed parents that the student was attending the Robotics World Championship, according to reporting by the Oakland County Times .

“Our hearts are very heavy as we mourn this loss," Hass said, per the outlet. "We will be ready to meet the needs of our students and staff Monday morning.”

Kirby noted in the statement that Lake Orion High School and Lake Orion Community Schools have crisis teams that will be ready to "help with the needs of students and school personnel."

"We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support our high school students through this tragedy," Kirby shared.

Authorities in Houston told USA TODAY a 16-year-old boy from Michigan died as a result of an apparent suicide Friday evening.

The teen's official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Harris County Coroner Coroner's Office.

Lake Orion High School Robotics team responds to tragedy

"This has been an incredibly challenging time for our team and community, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received," Lake Orion Robotics FIRST Team 302 shared in an Instagram post .

"We’re prioritizing the privacy of the family right now and will share more when it’s appropriate. Thank you all for your understanding and support."

Lake Orion High's robotics team was attending the FIRSTS robotics world championships in Houston, Texas that ran April 17 through April 20, according to the competition's website.

Support has poured in from other robotics teams across the country.

"Everyone on f(x) robotics sends their love and support to all @firstteam302 team members, their families, and the entire Lake Orion community as they get through this incredibly difficult time. #wearealldragons ," a North Carolina team wrote.

"4362 would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of the families, students, mentors, and coaches on @firstteam302 we our all here for you. #morethanrobots #wearealldragons ," wrote a Michigan team.

A West Virgina team said it is "grieved by the fact FIRST has lost a member of its community."

"This is a tragic time for everyone associated with team 302 and the FIRST community," an Idaho team shared.

Midwest Sweet 16 predictions: March Madness, NCAA picks are in for Little Caesars Arena

W ith top-seeded Purdue’s 106-87 victory over eighth-seeded Utah State on Sunday afternoon, the final four squads in the Midwest region are set and coming to Little Caesars Arena for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight this weekend. Here are the matchups:

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Matchup: 1-seed Purdue (31-4) vs. 5-seed Gonzaga (27-7), Midwest region Sweet 16.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Fast facts: 7:39 p.m. Friday; Little Caesars Arena, Detroit.

TV: TNT, truTV.

At stake: A win for the Boilermakers would send them to their first Elite Eight appearance since 2019; Purdue hasn’t advanced to the Final Four since 1980. A win by the Bulldogs would mean a return to the Elite Eight, where they lost to UConn last year; they’ve made the Final Four twice, losing to Baylor in the 2021 title game and to North Carolina in the 2017 title game.

SHAWN WINDSOR: Dusty May is a grinder and a seeker, and that's a promising combo for Michigan basketball

About Purdue

Location: West Lafayette, Indiana.

Coach: Matt Painter (444-202 in 19 seasons at Purdue; 469-207 overall).

School tournament record: 46-34 in 35 tournaments.

Past 10 games: 7-3.

Scoring leaders: Zach Edey, 24.6 points per game; Braden Smith, 12.5; Lance Jones, 12.1.

Rebounding leaders: Edey, 12 rebounds per game; Smith, 5.8; Trey Kaufman-Renn, 4.1.

Assist leaders: Smith, 7.4 assists per game; Edey, 2.1; Jones, 2.

3-point leaders: Mason Gillis, 47.3%; Camden Heide, 45.7%; Fletcher Loyer, 44.8%.

The buzz: Perhaps no squad has more to prove this year than the Boilermakers, who infamously are coming off a stunning first-round loss to 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson in last year’s NCAAs. It all runs through Zach Edey at center; the 7-foot-4 Canadian — in shoes, not skates — is a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, the reigning Wooden Award winner and a former hockey player growing up. (Maybe the Wings will let him on to their training ice this weekend?) He followed up a 30-point NCAA opener vs. Grambling State with 23 points and 14 rebounds in 27 minutes Sunday against Utah State. But the secret to stoping the Boilermakers may be keeping Braden Smith in check; the 6-0 guard shot 38.1% in Purdue’s four losses and 45.8% in the 31 victories. Don’t sleep on Fletcher Loyer, the brother of former Clarkston star Foster and son of former Pistons interim coach John; Loyer the Youngest saved his biggest games for the biggest foes, putting up 27 points apiece in the Boilermakers’ victories over Tennessee and Arizona.

About Gonzaga

Location: Spokane, Washington.

Coach: Mark Few (716-142 in 25 seasons at Gonzaga).

School tournament record: 46-25 in 26 tournaments.

Past 10 games: 9-1.

Scoring leaders: Graham Ike, 16.4 points per game; Anton Watson, 14.5; Nolan Hickman, 13.9.

Rebounding leaders: Ike, 7.3 rebounds per game; Watson, 7.2; Ben Gregg, 5.7.

Assist leaders: Ryan Nembhard, 6.9 assists per game; Hickman, 2.7; Watson, 2.6.

3-point leaders: Hickman, 41.8%; Watson, 40.8%; Gregg, 38.5%.

The buzz: Few teams left in the tournament can score like the Bulldogs, whose 85 points per game ranked seventh this season. (Among Sweet 16 teams, only No 1 Alabama, at 91.3 points, and No. 3 Arizona, at 87.6, were more potent.) But defense, we’re often told, wins championships, and that might be Gonzaga’s glaring weakness; GU ranked 40 th in Ken Pomeroy’s adjusted defensive ranking , and 12 th out of the teams playing in the second weekend. But let’s focus on what they do well: Score. That’s led by Graham Ike, who transferred across the Inland Northwest — that’s Washingtonian for “flyover region” — from Wyoming after missing all of last season with a right foot injury. The Colorado native averaged 19.5 points and 9.6 rebounds a game in leading the Cowboys to the 2022 NCAA tourney, then put up 16.4 and 7.3 this season while making the All-WCC first team. He’s not the only transfer excelling in his first season with the Zags; guard Ryan Nembhard jumped from Creighton after two seasons — just missing playing with brother Andrew, who’s now in the NBA — and averaged nearly seven assists a game. He had six assists and 11 points against the Boilermakers in their November game but hit just five of 17 shots from the field; Nembhard has attempted that many shots just once since — 19 in a January loss to Saint Mary’s (Calif.).

The Bulldogs looked unbeatable in demolishing Kansas in the second half Saturday, holding Hunter Dickinson & Co. to just 48 points. But, to put it politely, Dickinson is no Edey. “The Big Maple” scored 15 of his 25 points in the second half when Purdue took apart Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational in November, and it’s tough to imagine a motivated Boilermakers squad not repeating that performance. The pick: Purdue 78, Gonzaga 70.

SPARTANS WILL: Examining Michigan State basketball's 2024-25 roster heading into pivotal offseason

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Creighton Bluejays

Matchup: 2-seed Tennessee (26-8) vs. 3-seed Creighton (25-9), Midwest region Sweet 16.

Fast facts: 10:09 p.m. Friday; Little Caesars Arena, Detroit.

At stake: Not only have the Volunteers never made a Final Four, they’ve made the Elite Eight just once, in 2010 when they lost to Michigan State by a single point. This will be their fourth Sweet 16 appearance since then, with losses in 2014 (to Michigan), 2019 (to Purdue) and 2023 (to Florida Atlantic). The Bluejays are looking for a return to the Elite Eight after falling to San Diego State last year; Creighton has seven Sweet 16 appearances, but just three in the past 50 seasons.

About Tennessee

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee.

Coach: Rick Barnes (201-100 in nine seasons at Tennessee; 805-414 overall).

School tournament record: 27-26 in 26 tournaments.

Past 10 games: 8-2.

Scoring leaders: Dalton Knecht, 21.1 points per game; Jonas Aidoo, 12; Zakai Zeigler, 11.7.

Rebounding leaders: Aidoo, 7.6 rebounds per game; Josiah-Jordan James, 6.5; Knecht, 4.9.

Assist leaders: Zeigler, 6 assists per game; Santiago Vescovi, 2.5; James, 1.9.

3-point leaders: Knecht, 39.1%; Jahmai Mashack, 38.9%, Zeigler, 34.9%.

The buzz: The Vols bring one of the tourney’s best defenses, ranking third in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency rankings; that included holding poor St. Peter’s to 49 points on 29.1% shooting on Thursday and Texas to 58 points on 36.4% on Saturday. Add in that they have one of the tourney’s best one-on-one scorers in Dalton Knecht. The Colorado native is, yep, a transfer, showing that his scoring touch — he averaged 20.1 points a game last season for Northern Colorado — could carry over from the Big Sky Conference to the SEC. Sure, sometimes Knecht (and the rest of the Vols’ offense) goes cold —he made just five of 18 shots, and one of eight 3-point tries, in the win over Texas, while his teammates made just two of 17 3s — but Tennessee’s defense rarely wavers, with the Vols holding 20 of their 34 opponents under 70 points. That effort is led by guard Zakai Zeigler, who averaged 1.8 steals a game en route to his third berth on the SEC’s All-Defense team and a nod as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year this season. Zeigler is just 5-for-18 in the NCAA tournament, but he had three steals in the Vols’ win over Texas.

About Creighton

Location: Omaha, Nebraska.

Coach: Greg McDermott (325-159 in 14 seasons at Creighton; 474-290 overall).

School tournament record: 20-25 in 25 tournaments.

Scoring leaders: Baylor Scheierman, 18.3 points per game; Trey Alexander, 17.7; Ryan Kalkbrenner, 17.4.

Rebounding leaders: Scheierman, 9.1 rebounds per game; Kalkbrenner, 7.6; Alexander, 5.7.

Assist leaders: Aleander, 4.7 assists per game; Steven Ashworth, 4.2; Scheierman, 4.

3-point leaders: Mason Miller, 44.9%; Francisco Farabello, 43.3%; Isaac Traudt, 42.1%.

The buzz: Hey, look, some coaches can win after their superstar sons depart for the NBA! In the 10 seasons since Doug McDermott lifted the Bluejays into national prominence and, eventually, the Big East, Creighton has kept its momentum with six NCAA appearances in eight years. Like the other teams coming to LCA, the Bluejays have picked up reinforcements from the transfer portal — the most notable case for Creighton is Baylor Scheierman, who was a Summit League star at South Dakota State —you may remember him from his 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Providence in the 2022 tourney — before heading to Omaha last season. This season, Scheierman has 16 double-doubles, tied for 18 th nationally, and barely missed out on a 17 th  — with 18 points and nine rebounds — in the Bluejays’ double-overtime victory over Oregon on Saturday night. More recently, the Bluejays have benefitted from transfer Steven Ashworth, who was an 2022-23 All-Mountain West first-teamer who averaged 16.2 points a game while shooting 43.4% beyond the arc at Utah State before heading east on I-80 to join Creighton. McDermott’s crew will look to slow the pace; just five Sweet 16 squads averaged less than their 66.8 possessions per 40 minutes, according to KenPom.com .

The Vols actually play at one of the higher tempos, but their defense should translate well to stopping a Bluejays squad with a strong inside-outside game. Even if 7-footer Ryan Kalkbrenner dominates the paint for Creighton, Knecht should still have the outside touch to get Tennessee to its second-ever Elite Eight berth. The pick: Tennessee 70, Creighton 66.
