Perfectly situated between two national forests, the rural town of Canyonville offers a rustic, rural charm that is pleasing to any eye. With the great Cascade Mountains offering a majestic backdrop on the town’s eastern border, I could enjoy sitting on a cabin’s front porch all year long.  

In Canyonville, there is plenty to see and plenty to do whether you are a visitor who is just passing through or a full-time resident. I do not envision how this place could ever get boring. Therefore, listed below are tidbits of information on the town’s population, geography, climate, recreational activities, economics, history, and real estate. (I believe this is crucial information to consider while making a decision to relocate to this cozy Oregon town.)

If you’re a geography guru and have never heard of Canyonville, Oregon before, don’t worry.

Canyonville is located in the central portion of the state. It’s approximately 214 miles southeast of Portland (3 hours and 33 minute drive) and has an elevation of 750 feet. If you fly into Portland and rent a car, you will have a beautiful drive down I5 through most of the major cities in Oregon.

The Population of Canyonville Oregon

If you wish to find a rural Oregon town to settle down in, Canyonville is the answer. The cozy town only has a population of 1,977 residents. Should you ever need to commute to a larger town for various needs, Grants Pass is directly to the south and Roseburg is directly to the north. Furthermore, I have added some census statistics below to give you a better idea of the people and livelihoods in Canyonville town limits.

Most of the population of Canyonville is within one square mile. There are approximately 1,794 people per square mile.  

The average number of folks in a typical household is 2.6. This is certainly a family-oriented town.  

The median age in Canyonville is 44 years. In comparison with the median U.S. age being 37.4 years.

Whenever I plan a move to a new city or town, I always pull out a paper map and pen to examine the neighboring towns and cities and their distances from my desired location. (Yes, I use a real, tangible, old school paper map and pen. In my opinion, technology can’t replace everything!)  

Canyonville is located in the southeastern portion of Oregon in Douglas County. It is exactly 100 miles north of the California state border and is situated on Interstate 5. (Conveniently, Interstate 5 also runs through the towns of Grants Pass and Roseburg.) Canyonville is also directly south of Portland by 200 miles. Clearly, with its position on the Interstate, this charming, rural town is convenient to many nearby places.

I think it is safe to say that the rustic, charming, rural town is surrounded by multiple towns and cities that are easily accessible. This gives you the pleasure of country life without being completely isolated from society. I don’t know about you, but I like that.  

Geographical Landscape and Climate for Canyonville

As previously stated, Canyonville is nestled between two national forests: Umpqua National Forest to the east and Siskiyou National Forest to the southwest. Furthermore, it is also situated between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Cascade Mountain Range to the east.  

The area has a Mediterranean Climate with elements of an oceanic climate mixed in. This means that the summers in Canyonville are typically warm and dry while the winters are wet and cool. In other words, it’s not too hot in the summer, and it’s not too hot in the winter. Perfect weather, if you ask me!

Since the town is nestled between two large national forests, it is a great area to explore via hiking. You can find trails of nearly any kind: day trails, camping trails, easy trails, expert trails, and sight seeing trails.  

Another popular activity in the area is camping. During the summer, folks from all around partake in the fantastic weather with trying out their camping skills. Cow Creek is a popular place for camping and fishing. Canyonville has spectacular views of the stars during clear nights.

The History of Canyonville

I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoy researching the history of towns and cities. I believe it is an important part of developing pride in your new home as well. (Assuming that you are reading this article with a new move to Canyonville in consideration.) Please allow me to share with you the tidbits of history about this charming, little town in Southern Oregon.

Canyonville is a historic town whose beginnings began with the Hudson’s Bay Company in the early 1800’s. The Hudson’s Bay Company consisted of expert trappers who used the route through the town to gain access into California. Famous hunters and trappers like Alexander McCloud frequently travelled through the area on their many excursions.  

By the 1840’s and 1850’s, gold and quartz had been discovered in the area which resulted in the infamous Gold Rush. The time period, along with the Oregon Trail, helped usher in more residents to the area. It was during this time that Canyonville had its first postmaster, and it made its official stamp on the map.  

With Canyon Creek and Cow Creek being nearby, people began to build homesteads and the beginnings of a town began to emerge. To this day, you can walk around town and explore the historic sites of these fascinating beginnings.  

So how did Canyonville earn its name?

The city’s name came from a reference nickname the old pioneers used to pinpoint the original platting of the city called, “Farewell Bend”. This location was along the Deschutes River and was a great spot to ford the river.

The name “Bend” was derived from “Farewell Bend”, the designation used by early pioneers to refer to the location along the Deschutes River where the town was eventually platted, one of the few fordable points along the river.

One lane of I-5 northbound closed 2 miles south of Canyonville due to crash

CANYONVILLE, Ore. - One northbound lane of Interstate 5 remains closed 2 miles south of Canyonville (at milepost 96) following a crash, Oregon Dept. of Transportation reports.

"Expect delays or use an alternate route," ODOT says. "Prepare to slow or move over for worker safety."

Annual issues of “ Pioneer Days “, books on local history, and historical interviews on DVD are available for purchase

Located in Canyonville, Oregon, the Pioneer-Indian Museum (operated by the South Umpqua Historical Society) showcases the rich history of Southern Oregon’s Native American tribes and exciting pioneering heritage. The museum offers several buildings with exhibits and displays that highlight the history of the South Douglas County area from the days of the Indians through the coming of the pioneers to a land of forests, rivers and streams.

Our main museum building has displays of furniture, crockery, cooking utensils and needlework donated by the ancestors of the pioneers who traveled with the wagon trains on their difficult journey west. Discover native artifacts, including baskets, beadwork, pestles and a display of tools and beading provided by the Cow Creek Tribe. A large mural by a local artist replicates pictographs drawn hundreds of years ago by the North Umpqua Tribe.

Our Pickens-Matthews building contains agricultural equipment and tools. We proudly exhibit a hack from the Clough family, which may have been built for Joseph Clough, stage driver and rancher, by Charles Bealman, who was the local blacksmith and builder of wagons.

The Bureau of Land Management donated the old Huckleberry Mine gold stamp mill and renovated it. Clint Atherton, a museum member, built a replica of the mine building. Ray Boyd, also a member, helped disassemble and reset the equipment up in the building.

The Pickett Building, donated by Charles and Delores Pickett, contains old tractors and cars and will house our logging and mining exhibits as well as various other items from the Picketts. The new expansion of the building, it is now 20×60 feet, was added this past fall by the Picketts and many other community members and businesses. The Pickett family was responsible for numerous buildings and bridges in the area by providing lumber from their mills beginning with their arrival in Oregon in 1876.

A wheelwright and blacksmith shop have been added to the Pickett Building equipped with all of the tools needed to build wagon wheels and to forge the various tools needed by the pioneers. A large collection of miniature wagons are displayed in each shop.

Justice Court

The building in which the former Justice of the Peace conducted court was donated to the museum by Chuck and Chun Cha Mauldin when they purchased the property on which it sat. The building is replete with desk and chair, warming stove and albums of marriages performed by the most recently retired Justice, Gloria McGinnis. Justice from 1962-1994 was Nina Pietzold, whose husband built the building for her near Gross Loop in the southern end of Canyonville.

Plank House

DThe Cow Creek Tribe of the Umpqua Band of Indians has constructed, with assistance from Don Day, of Salem, a winter structure of cedar planks. Native plants used as medicine and food are growing near the structure with more to be planted in the spring. An interpretive sign constructed by Ron Ehly of Azalea will provide information about the creation of the plank house and the native plants.

In 2015, the Ford Foundation Leadership Training Cohort Group 2 completed construction of the wagon shed, located at the north end of the Pickett Building. Shown is the new wagon shed proudly displaying our wagons.

They fund-raised and got in-kind donations from many businesses and not only constructed a wagon shed, but gave us mannequins for clothing displays, glass for a display cabinet top, and signs to tell about our museum and where we are located. A plaque was made and placed on the shed to acknowledge the contributions from all of the local businesses. Our deep appreciation to those who gave materials to help preserve these wagons and for all the extra things that were accomplished!

We were approached in 2019 by our South Umpqua/Canyonville Fire Department. They wished to know if we could accept their old 1957 pumper fire truck. We all agreed that it should be under cover but, we had no room for it. A decision was made to add a shed to the east side of the Pickett Building. With the help of Jim Fosback, who explained our need for exhibit space to a number of local businesses, work began with site preparation, permits, a contractor and materials to construct a 20 by 66 foot structure.

The result is an attractive, solidly built shed that enables us to have future expansion space as well as fulfilling our immediate need. It was decided that the fire truck would be more easily seen and appreciated in the shed previously constructed on the north end of the building. The wagons have been moved to the new area, with arranging to be done in the spring.

In spite of Covid 19 our local businesses provided us with the necessary rock, lumber, plywood and materials to create this much needed exhibit space. We are grateful to the following for the part they played in this successful project.

Museum History

Our Historical Society was organized as a non-profit corporation in 1969 with the goal of building a museum to house historical artifacts of the communities of Southern Douglas County. During the ensuing years, funds were acquired through donations and grants. In 1983, Lawrence Boyle, president of the Society, donated an acre of land on which to build the future museum. Another significant goal was to produce an annual historical booklet about South County history.
