America's Most Beautiful Coastal Views

Caroline Kinneberg is an editor and writer with more than 15 years of journalism experience. Originally from the United States and currently based in Paris, she has contributed to The New York Times , The Boston Globe , and many others.

People often talk about how moving the shore is—a place that relaxes, awakens, and recharges. Then there are those whom, well, it literally moves: "Our family loved going to the beach so much that we spontaneously picked up and moved our family of six there! No job, no plan, no idea whether we'd truly like it or not.... We just did it," says Mike Ragsdale, formerly of Birmingham, AL, now of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. "That was almost four years ago, and we all agree it was the best thing we ever did as a family." What is it about ocean shorelines that has such power? They touch every sense: the redolence of fresh sea breeze, the sand underfoot, the sparkling sunsets, and the white noise of crashing waves. Whether you're reclining on windswept sands or trekking across dizzying bluffs, the ebb and flow of the water is hypnotic, and its sheer expanse grounding. Something as vast as the ocean just puts all of life's little worries into perspective. "For me, it's the freedom that comes with a coastal visit that's particularly appealing," says Jeanna Zelin, founder of Retreats by the Sea , which organizes luxury wellness getaways to such beachside destinations as Portland, ME; Santa Barbara, CA; and Chatham, MA. "You're on vacation, so there's no work to be done. Plus, the textures and scents and sounds of the surf carry your mind away—you turn off your left brain and just start feeling." Zelin's lifelong affinity for the beach stems from childhood summers on North Carolina 's Outer Banks, where wild ponies roam on certain shores. Those on Shackleford Banks have a special story, says Zelin: "The origin of the Shackleford horses, according to my relatives in North Carolina, is a mystery—with the most common legend telling the story of Spanish mustangs swimming ashore from a wrecked ship." Camping next to meandering horses, especially ones with such a backstory, makes for the most romantic and rustic of beach scenes. Treasures can be found along all of the United States' coasts, 95 thousand miles of eastern, western, northern, and southern shoreline that exemplify the diversity our country has to offer. Rent a convertible, crank up some Beach Boys, and cruise down the glittery glam beaches that line California 's Pacific Coast Highway. Or, for a more isolated drive, try winding in and out of the majestic fjords draping southeast Alaska 's forested border, a haven for bald eagles and humpback whales. So whether you crave a bracing hike along blustery seaside cliffs or a relaxed afternoon under the fiery sun, the U.S. has a shore to match your every mood—and views that will blow you away.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur, CA

Some of the earth’s tallest and oldest trees, coastal redwoods can soar nearly 400 feet into the air and live more than 3,500 years. Our favorite place to sit and contemplate among this impressive species—native to certain areas of California and southwest Oregon—is Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. It’s smaller than other protected areas in central California’s Big Sur region and undeservedly (but blessedly) overlooked.

Insider Tip: The best view in the whole place is of McWay Falls, a rare coastal waterfall. Climb 10 minutes from the Julia Pfeiffer Burns parking lot (following the signs for the upper trail) to see its torrent plunge 80 feet from a vertiginous mountainside straight into the turquoise Pacific.

Brewster, Cape Cod, MA

On the beckoning hook of Massachusetts lies the town of Brewster, with mirage-like tidal flats so vast that a coast in Brazil is said to be their only rival in size. During low tide, you can walk a mile into the ocean on freshly exposed sand, alongside minnow-filled tidal pools, skittering hermit crabs, and bubbles from quahogs breathing underfoot.

Insider Tip: Stock up on penny candy like Boston Baked Beans and nonpareils at The Brewster Store before setting out to the beach. Eating it on the shore while looking up at the wind-beaten, colonial clapboard houses atop the bluff is pure Americana.

Ten Thousand Islands, Everglades National Park, FL

The nine delicate, endangered ecosystems within this 1.5 million-acre World Heritage–protected sanctuary, located on Florida ’s southwest tip, contain a mind-boggling range of flora and fauna. Take in nature’s glory in the Ten Thousand Islands, a chain of mangrove-forested barrier islands bordering Chokoloskee Bay where, on any given day, you’ll spot great blue herons, endangered West Indian manatees, and gargantuan gators and crocs swimming alongside one another—the only place in the world where these toothy reptiles coexist.

Insider Tip: Take an Everglades Island airboat tour to get an overview of the untamed Gulf shore and its many wild animals...with, of course, a safe distance between you and the snapping jaws of those crocs.

Tongass National Forest, AK

Alaska’ s Tongass National Forest—the largest in the U.S.—is a rainforest (albeit a temperate one) on Alaska’s southern coast. All that precipitation makes for a spectacular landscape, with mist-obscured coves, mighty waterfalls, and North Pacific fjords as immense and enchanting as Norway ’s. Plus, the extraordinary wildlife (think bald eagles, porcupines, black bears) is exactly what one dreams of in Alaska, and the activities are endless, from fly-fishing to sea kayaking.

Insider Tip: From May through the first week of September, Orvis’s weeklong Alaska Adventure Cruise package will help you access the hard-to-get-to spots on intimate ships, with onboard naturalists who accompany guests during onshore excursions.

Makalawena Beach, Kekaha KaiState Park, HI

The Big Island’ s west Kona Coast may be renowned for its coffee beans, but its best hidden treasure is a beach called Makalawena. To get there, park at Mahaiula and head north on the dirt path for a sweaty third-of-a-mile hike—part of it across a jagged dried lava bed. You’ll be surprised to emerge at a heavenly, triple-crescented, white sand beach so isolated that, if you even encounter another soul, it’s likely to be a flippered, friendly-looking green turtle, which for decades has teetered on the verge of extinction.

Insider Tip: Pick up a boogie board ($8.75/day) or surfboard ($30/day) at Learn to Surf Kona along Highway 19 before you test out the waves. Afterward, rinse off in the freshwater pond concealed by palm trees just beyond the sand dunes.

Newport Beach, RI

America’s wealthiest families started building their “summer cottages” (read: stately mansions) here in the mid-19th century, attracted by Newport Beach’s gorgeous views. Not much has changed since then, except that many of the historic homes—which overlook sweeps of ocean so immense it’s easy to forget that Rhode Island is our smallest state—are now open to the public, thanks largely to the efforts of Doris Duke in the 1950s. Her sprawling, 1887 English manor–style estate, Rough Point, is among the island’s most spectacular buildings—and it has the vistas to match.

Insider Tip: Don’t skip the mostly gentle 3.5-mile cliff walk, atop the beaches’ craggy rocks.

Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, CA

Winding 130 miles from Oxnard to Dana Point, past some of America’s most famous beaches, this scenic southern stretch of California’s Route One is the perfect setting for a classic American road trip. The best stretch may be the four-mile, palm-lined portion that overlooks the golden sands and white-tipped surf of Will Rogers and Santa Monica state beaches from atop grassy cliffs—it’s the stuff of California dreaming. To best enjoy the area’s near constant sunny days (more than 300 per year), keep that convertible top down.

Insider Tip: Evoke the glamour of a 1920s Hollywood getaway with a night (or a meal) fit for a movie star at Mediterranean-style Casa del Mar , a T+L World’s Best Hotel. You’ll find it by detouring off Highway One at the end of the route.

Ogunquit, ME

It’s no wonder the Algonquin Indians named this idyllic spot—now a quaint village packed with antique shops and galleries—Ogunquit, or “beautiful place by the sea”: the 3.5-mile stretch of windswept muslin-colored sand ringed by stone outcroppings is especially striking when compared to Maine ’s characteristically craggy shore. Known for an art colony established in 1898, the town continues to inspire painters and photographers today.

Insider Tip: Ogunquit’s Marginal Way —an easy one-and-a-quarter-mile stroll—starts downtown, meanders along craggy cliffs (which drop straight into cormorant- and duck-dotted waters), and ends at Perkins Cove, with two not-to-miss attractions: an iconic 19th-century footbridge and Footbridge Lobster , where the signature lobster roll is stuffed with five ounces of the day’s freshest catch—hauled in by the owner himself—and served with a side of chips or cole slaw.

Shackleford Banks, NC

You don’t have to be starring in a Clint Eastwood western to camp amid wild horses: on the Outer Banks of North Carolina—a string of spaghetti-skinny barrier islands skirting the state’s east coast—that’s just your standard vacation. The best place to pitch your tent is on the golden sands of secluded Shackleford Banks, on the Cape Lookout National Seashore, where more than 100 ponies roam among the dunes, snacking on seagrass and lazing in the surf. Legend has it they’re descendants of Spanish mustangs that escaped a shipwreck.

Insider Tip: Take the 15- to 20-minute ferry from Morehead City ($15 round-trip; crystalcoastferry.com ) , Beaufort ($15; islandferryadventures.com ) , or Harkers Island ($10-$20; capelookoutferry.com ) to reach the uninhabited 2,500-acre island, part of Cape Lookout National Seashore’s Crystal Coast.

Shi Shi Beach, Olympic National Park, WA

When most people conjure the Pacific Northwest, specific images spring to mind—and Shi Shi (pronounced “shai shai”) Beach has it all: sea stacks towering above the ocean, Sitka spruce forests, and soaring herons. It’s 2.5 miles along remote, driftwood-strewn sands from the beach’s entrance to the iconic Point of Arches, a chain of enormous arched, piled, and pointed rocks—but we promise it’s well worth the walk.

Insider Tip: The muddy, three-mile trail from the parking lot to the beach crosses gorgeously forested Makah Indian Reservation lands. Before heading out, pick up a Makah recreational permit ($10; valid for one year), some picnic-ready snacks, and galoshes at Washburn General Store , located in town.

Long Beach, WA

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

This 28-mile-long finger of land dips into the Pacific at just the spot where the Columbia River shoots into the ocean. While it may or may not be the “World’s Longest Beach,” as a sign asserts, it is most certainly among the most untouched and hasn’t changed much in the two centuries since Lewis and Clark finished their expedition there. Take in the same view of the magical sunlit shore they must have admired while walking the 8.5-mile Discovery Trail that traces part of their route or stroll along the half-mile wooden boardwalk resting on top of the dunes.

Calvert Cliffs State Park, MD

This peaceful beach on the Chesapeake Bay attracts avid fossil hunters and shell lovers from all over the East Coast—the scenic, sandy cliffs between the bay and the woods occasionally calve like glaciers and deposit fresh Miocene-era shark teeth and snail fossils on the beach. An easy two-mile hike on paths through woods and over wetlands keeps the beach blissfully lonesome. Though the cliffs aren’t open for hiking, they provide a beautiful backdrop for watching the sunset while the gentle waves of the Chesapeake Bay jostle oyster and clamshells up on the sand.

Kiawah Island, SC

This South Carolina coastal retreat offers miles of starfish and conch shell-lined beach and marsh-lined forested paths not far from Charleston . The best way to take in the views from Kiawah Island’s expansive 10-mile crescent of shoreline is from its championship golf courses. Although all five of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s courses are worthy, the Pete Dye–designed Ocean course, with water views on every hole, is the main attraction. After playing, head to the Ocean Course Clubhouse for panoramic views over the Atlantic.

Tybee Island, GA

This island community, just a half hour from Savannah , offers beach lovers plenty of wide stretches of white sand for building castles. To immerse yourself in the scenery, take a kayak tour from Tybee Island through narrow tidal creeks to Little Tybee Island ($55; savannahcanoeandkayak.com ) , an uninhabited nature preserve that’s home to coastal salt marshes, untouched beaches, and lush subtropical forests. If you’re lucky, you might even see the resident dolphins that inhabit the maze of barrier islets off Georgia’ s coast.

St. Pete Beach, FL

More old Florida than new, this lazy, low-key town on the central west coast of the Sunshine State is blissfully free of party-down revelers and velvet-rope VIP rooms. Instead, St. Pete Beach has a healthy subculture of surfers, who tend to congregate at the nearby Sunset and Upham beaches or, a bit farther north, at the Redington Beach pier. The Don CeSar, a pink lady of a resort that dominates the skyline and prime location on the sand dunes, delivers barefoot luxury with all the amenities—spa, beachfront pools, and wide-open views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Cumberland Island, GA

A short ferry ride from the crowded mainland, gloriously deserted Cumberland Island is a land unto itself: nearly 20 miles of practically untouched wilderness is dotted with the occasional historic building or ruin. A former Carnegie family retreat, this undeveloped barrier island has majestic wild horses, sugary beaches, and hiking trails through sand dunes, palmetto forests, and bird-filled salt marshes. Rent a bike from the park rangers and head south from the ferry landing to Dungeness Beach, to catch ocean views where seashells wash ashore.

South Padre Island, TX

The beauty of the 34 miles of undeveloped beaches and dunes at Texas ’s southernmost tip is best experienced in the pristine blue waters: sports fans can try windsurfing, kite-surfing, or sand-surfing. Board-free doesn’t mean bored, though: go for a horseback ride on the beach or paddle a kayak through back bays and inlets; jump a fishing charter or dolphin-watching cruise; or just drive out to the end of the northbound road, cross the dunes to an empty beach, and pretend you’re on a deserted island. Unwind at day’s end while watching the sunset behind the calm waters of the Laguna Madre Bay on the island’s western shore.

Cannon Beach, OR

Ancient, rocky fingers reach up from the ocean near this popular beach town, anchored by an iconic 235-foot-tall fist known as Haystack Rock. The sea stacks draw nature lovers, who traipse the wide sandy crescent, straining to see offshore puffins or watch the sun’s inevitable descent between the basalt spires. As the tide recedes, people chase the water line and clamber over now-exposed stones, searching for starfish while gazing straight up at Haystack and the endless whitecaps beyond.

Nearly 100 miles of rugged, rocky coastline stretch out from Lubec. Located on a peninsula less than a mile at its widest, and flanked by bays, it can be tough finding a spot without beautiful coastline views. Spend an afternoon exploring the area's many lighthouses, or watch the sunrise from the coast—after all, this is the easternmost town in the U.S.

Cape May, NJ

Gently curving sandy stretches, dunes, and lighthouses make southern New Jersey a coastal viewing paradise. While it’s beautiful anytime of the year, Cape May offers a bonus attraction for just a few months each year: migratory birds pass through on their commute south for the winter. Starting mid-August and lasting into November, spot swallows, warblers, hawks, and falcons flapping down the shore.

Montauk, NY

A thin ribbon of beach trails along Long Island ’s southern shore, ending in a rocky precipice at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum . Climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse for the best ocean views, or head to the beach and watch the surfers who take on the Atlantic waves.

Isle Royale, MI

One of the country’s least-visited national parks, part of the island’s appeal is its isolation. With about 15,000 visitors annually, the virtual deserted nature of the island make the coastal views that much more peaceful. Be sure to look for freshwater clams and snails lurking around in tidal pools. (Note: the park is closed in winter.)

Point Reyes, CA

Home to more than 1,000 different species of plants and animals, this West Coast national park delivers coastal views with your choice of surrounding; whether you prefer sandy shorelines or rocky cliffs, you can find it here...just make sure to get there in time to see the sunset over the Pacific.

Lake views and iconic skyscrapers: Chicago’s beaches offer panoramas of a different kind than most cities. Watch the boats careening over Lake Michigan, then turn around for towering buildings. For the best skyline views, head north to the beaches in Evanston.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Tourists flock to Key West not only for the laidback, party island atmosphere, but for the breathtaking views of the ocean, particularly at sunset. Score a seat at one of the many outdoors hot spots just off Front or Duval streets on the island’s west coast, grab a cool glass of Key West Lemonade (spiked with vodka), and wait for the show. Of course, we can’t promise it’ll be quiet.

10 Most Beautiful Ocean Views in the World

10 Most Beautiful Ocean Views in the World

A rocky coastline where the desert meets the ocean and the ocean meets the sky is an incredible sight. Whether you are a photographer looking for the best photo op, or an adventurer who appreciates panoramic vistas, the planet Earth has you covered.

If stunning sunsets and crashing oceans are your things, here are the 10 most beautiful ocean views in the world that we promise will take your breath away.

1. The Skeleton Coast, Namib Desert, Namibia

This is the spookiest name on our list, one that will give you the chills when you hear the story behind it. Located in the oldest desert on Earth, the Skeleton Coast stretches 310.686 miles (500 kilometers) along the Namib Desert coast.

It is known as a treacherous coastline and one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

The unpredictable Benguela current had been stranding ships for centuries, making it impossible for them to leave the shore. And so it became the largest ship graveyard in the world.

The name Skeleton Coast also refers to the whale and seal bones scattered across the entire coast due to the whaling industry.

How to get the best view?

The best view of the Skeleton Coast is from a bird’s perspective.

A scenic flight that skims low across the sea and sand where you can see the thousands of shipwrecks and skeletons and goes high enough to witness the most pristine coastlines in the world.

2. Great Australian Bight, Australia

The Great Australian Bight is an open bay along the southern coastline of mainland Australia.

It is famous for its large and unique marine biodiversity, 85% of which can not be found anywhere else in the world. Over 1,500 southern right whales call this place home. So yes, whale watching is one of the main attractions.

Here the desert meets the ocean, and land that stretches for hundreds of kilometers forms the longest rocky coastline in the world. Some of the cliffs reach a height of 120 meters. A true wonder worth seeing.

There are many walkways and lookouts that offer amazing views of the coastline, and most charge a small fee. However, the best place to see the Great Australian Bight is 74km past the Nullarbor Motel, on the road to Perth, marked as Scenic Lookout No 1 , and it’s free.

3. Cabo de San Vicente, Algarve, Portugal

Cabo Sao Vicente, or Cape of St. Vincent, is one of Portugal’s many wonders. It boasts pristine beaches and beautiful landscapes. The line of cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean offers spectacular views, some of which are 75 meters high.

Located in Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve area of southern Portugal, Cabo Sao Vicente is the southwesternmost point of Portugal and mainland Europe. Also known as “The end of the world,” Cabo Sao Vicente was a sacred site in the Neolithic period. A lighthouse stands tall on the cliff, still in use today.

How to get the best view?

The best view of the stunning coastline and the ocean is from the light h ouse . More precisely, on the outside, along the edge of the rocky plateau.

Cape St. Vincent, Sagres, Algarve, Portugal

4. Bixby Bridge, Big Sur, California, USA

Bixby Creek Bridge is an iconic bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway 1. It is also one of the most Instagrammable bridges in LA. Many movies were filmed here, including the popular TV series Big Little Lies. Built in 1932, Bixby Bridge is an engineering marvel of its time.

You will find many scenic overlooks along the highway. However, Castle Rock Viewpoint is the best spot to witness the spectacular views of Bixby Bridge.

5. Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland

One of Ireland’s most famous coastlines stretches 14 km long along the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare. Nature has been carving the sea cliffs for thousands of years, forming spectacular shapes and formations.

This natural wonder forms a protected area for over 20 species of nesting birds. The cliffs are so famous that they have featured in many movies, including Harry Potter, The Princess Bride, Leap Year, and Snowhite and the Huntsmen.

Hag’s Head viewpoint offers the most incredible view of the Irish landmarks. It is situated at the southern end facing the rugged Irish coastline.

6. Nugget Point, Otago, New Zealand

Catlins coastal area in the Otago region is where you will find Nugget Point. Besides abundant wildlife and nesting birds, including Royal spoonbills, Nugget Point offers breathtaking views of the Nuggets. These are rocky islets in the shape of gold nuggets, hence the name.

The highlight of Nugget Point is Tokata Lighthouse, one of the most famous lighthouses in the world . From here, you can witness the most dramatic coastal views.

Nugget Point, Otago, New Zealand

7. Lion’s Head, Cape Town, South Africa

A two-hour hike up the mountain between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, Cape Town, will take you to Lion’s Head. A popular hiking spot and starting point for paragliders, the peak offers breathtaking views.

Over 200,000 hikers climb up the peak each year, making it one of the most climbed mountain peaks in the world.

For fascinating views of Table Mountain Top and Cape Town, head to Lion’s Head Summit with experienced tour guides who will keep you safe during the entire hike.

Atlantic Ocean and Cape town from Lion's head in South Africa

8. Látrabjarg, Iceland

The Land of Fire and Ice is packed with breathtaking natural wonders. Látrabjarg is the largest cliff in Iceland, stretching 8.75 miles (14 km) along the Westfjords, the westernmost part of the island. The area is abundant with birdlife, including puffins and the largest razorbill colony.

Tourists and locals often try to get to the cliffs to take photos of some incredible views and get closer to nature.

Latrabjarg is not accessible by public transport, so renting a car or a campervan is the best way to get up the largest bird cliff in the world. Take road 612 , around 37 miles from the village of Patreksfjörður. You can admire the majestic views of the ocean, the Snæfellsjökull glacier, and the volcano in the distance from the trails heading up the cliff.

Latrabjarg, Iceland

9. Cabo Vidio, Asturias, Spain

Crashing ocean and views that will take your breath away are just a small part of what you get at Cabo Vidio. The rugged peninsula sticks out the coast along the Mar Cantabrico, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, ideal for glorious sunsets.

The cliffs reach 80 m (262 ft) above sea level. Take a hike down and under the cliffs for the secret cave called Cueva de la Iglesiona de Cabo Vidio. Besides the cave, there is a lighthouse at the top of the cliffs, where visitors can enjoy the dramatic rugged coastal scenery.

The lighthouse Cudillero offers the best views of the dramatic cliff drops. Make sure to walk a full circle around it for a 360-degree view.

Cabo Vidio, Cudillero, Spain

10. Hanauma Bay, Oʻahu, Hawaii

If you are looking for the best snorkeling spot in the world, this might be it. Home to a pristine marine ecosystem including Green sea turtles and Chelonia mydas, known as Honu, the wineglass-shaped bay on the southeast coast of the Island of O’ahu is worth visiting any time of the year.

Hanauma Bay is one of the most touristy places in Hawaii and is also a State Park. Tickets may be hard to get, so booking in advance is recommended.

Out of the many hiking trails in the area, Hanauma Bay Lookout (observation deck) gives you the best views of Honolulu’s prime snorkeling destination. The loop trail is moderate level, ideal for first-time visitors.

For easier access, you can park at Hanauma Bay State Park for a small fee, but parking is limited.

Things to Do in Ocean View / East Beach

Enjoy the sand & sun.

Kayaking, sailing, fishing, crabbing, swimming or simply watching the waves roll in Ocean View and East Beach are a beach lovers paradise. The City of Norfolk maintains three beach parks including the Community Beach Park, Sarah Constant Beach Park and Ocean View Beach Park, and hosts live music and various festivals on the beach.

East Ocean View Recreation Center

Sarah constant beach park, ocean view golf course, ocean view fishing pier, ocean view beach park, northside park, community beach park, mermaids on parade / mermaid trail, you may also like, norfolk bookstores and pop-up booksellers, best norfolk restaurants for student groups, student tour itinerary: explore norfolk, where to find live music in norfolk, va.

California's Best Ocean View Restaurants

trip trip ocean view

These California restaurants aren't just near the ocean, most of them have great ocean views along with great food and service, too.

Big Sur: Nepenthe

We're not sure exactly what it is about this place. It sits on a little jutting bit of land that gives it fine Big Sur coast views, the building designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright sits so well on the site that you might think it grew there and the laid-back ambiance can't be topped.

Carmel: Mission Ranch

Mission Ranch is an unassuming-looking place, sitting on the edge of Carmel with a view of the bay and Point Lobos in the distance. In between, a herd of sheep grazes in the meadow, seeming as relaxed and contented as the diners on the patio. No matter what the weather, Mission Ranch never disappoints with a reliable menu of well-prepared classics. On a sunny day, it's so beautiful that you may not even notice what's on your plate.

And speaking of those sheep, we've seen them get a round of applause for the cute way they all hurry into their shed at dusk.

This place retains its charm thanks in part to owner Clint Eastwood, who saved the former dairy farm from being covered in condominiums.

La Jolla: George's at the Cove

It's hard to beat the ocean views from pretty La Jolla, just north of San Diego. George's at the Cove is a long-time favorite here, with food to match the view. On a sunny day, head for the rooftop dining spot, where you can take in sun and scene all at the same time.

La Jolla: Marine Room

Everyone calls their ocean views "spectacular." And their French cuisine rates well, too. Some folks say if you can't make it for dinner, try happy hour - for the quality, it's one of the best deals in town - and it shares the same view as the dining room.

Malibu: Geoffrey's Malibu

You can't beat the views from Geoffrey's, but there's also its rich history and the pure cachet of saying casually: "when we were dining in Malibu..." Their outdoor tables are little bit of heaven on a pretty day and everyone raves about their Sunday brunch, too.

Monterey: Schooners Bistro

This place is what you might call hidden in plain sight, sitting on the back of the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Both of the dining areas overlook the Monterey Bay, but the casual Schooners Bar is our favorite, with an outdoor terrace that hangs right over the water. While dining at Schooners, we've seen sea otters playing in the kelp, sea lions bobbing next to brightly-colored kayaks - and even a celebrity or two.

Point Reyes: Nick's Cove

A fresh take on a Marin County landmark, Nick's Cove sits on a pier that juts into the water with views of Tomales Bay. Seafood is fresh and locally-farmed oysters are always a great choice, but they also do a great job with everything on the menu. Try for a seat near the windows, or out on the patio on a nice day for the best views of the bay.

Redondo Beach: Kincaid's

The Redondo Beach Pier is one of Southern California's busiest, built in a horseshoe shape, with views out toward the ocean and Catalina Island. Kincaid's sits at a particularly pretty spot, with windows across one entire wall, looking out to sea. Food is nice and the lunch is quite affordable.

San Francisco: Greens

Located in a converted warehouse at historic Fort Mason, Greens offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge out their floor-to-ceiling windows and you can see out from every seat in the house. The menu is all vegetarian menu, but chef Annie Somerville's cooking is so good that even our most carnivorous of friends don't seem to miss the meat. The view is especially nice in the late afternoon and early evening.

Santa Monica: The Lobster

The Lobster sits right above the Santa Monica Pier and they've been serving happy customers since 1923. Their longevity is the first clue that they've got it right, but so are their Yelp! reviews, some of the best we've seen. Get there around sunset and you can enjoy watching the pier's amusement park rides light up.

Santa Monica: One Pico

Try for a window-side seat in the nautical blue-and-white dining room and you'll get a sweeping view of the Santa Monica Bay. One Pico is located in Shutters on the Beach hotel, and while it might be hard for the food to outdo the view, Travel & Leisure magazine says it's the "best hotel dining room in Santa Monica ."

Since living in Florida, I have enjoyed the every day tropical weather, as well as being so close to the Caribbean Islands.

Celebrity is my very favorite cruise line. I love their modern luxury style, their amazing food and service. One of my favorite memories is my honeymoon on the Celebrity Reflections. It was a Top Chef sailing. Being a foodie, I was in heaven!

I would love to hear all about your favorite vacation and where you are dreaming to go next!

OCEAN VIEWS RESORT (AU$185) 2024 Prices & Reviews

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

trip trip ocean view

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

trip trip ocean view

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

trip trip ocean view

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

trip trip ocean view

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

trip trip ocean view

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

trip trip ocean view

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

trip trip ocean view

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

As Venice grapples with overtourism, the city tests a 5-euro fee for day-trippers

Willem Marx

The storied city of Venice, Italy, has begun charging fees for day trips by tourists.

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

The Italian city of Venice has introduced a daily fee for visitors as part of an effort to control the crowds of tourists that too often overwhelm the city, especially in the summer months. But as Willem Marx reports, this new charge on arrivals is not proving entirely popular with all the locals.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

WILLEM MARX, BYLINE: Venice is an iconic island city filled with baroque beauty and gliding gondolas, its ancient, narrow streets often crammed with crowds of visitors. Authorities recently barred cruise ships from docking in the lagoon around Venice. Now, this new plan means people arriving for just a day must pay 5 euros, roughly $5, for a ticket valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Given the crowds, city officials like Marco Bettini says this new approach has become unavoidable.

MARCO BETTINI: I cannot guarantee a suitable visit to the city if we don't know how many people are coming to Venice.

MARX: Young children and visitors who've booked a hotel will be exempt from the fee, and so will residents, but that doesn't mean all Venetians are happy about this new idea.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER #1: (Speaking Italian).

MARX: One man at this protest rally called it a sad day for Venice, as the new entrance fee turned his city into a museum, a theme park. "And besides," he said, "the police would struggle to enforce the new rules."

UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER #2: (Speaking Italian).

MARX: Other residents say the ticket will only really hinder day-trippers, and the new charge will do nothing to combat the mass tourism from around the world that at times overwhelms their city.

UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTERS: (Chanting in Italian).

MARX: "We live here, and we will stay here," they chant. And it's not just residents and local leaders in Venice working to preserve their community against the impact of tourism. In the stunning Cinque Terre region on the other side of Italy, a famous coastal path now charges visitors who choose to walk it. In Capri, ferry costs are going up, and in Florence, authorities have banned short-term rentals on sites like Airbnb. Italy remains among the most visited countries on Earth, and authorities welcome the impact those visitors have on their economy, but they say they must find the right balance between Italian residents in their hometowns and those from elsewhere who wish to enjoy them.
