British comedians return to Australia | International acts back on Melbourne festival line-up

British comedians return to Australia

International acts back on Melbourne festival line-up

British comedians are to return to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the first time in three years after Australia relaxed its Covid rules.

Borders will be open to vaccinated overseas visitors from Monday – just in time for the festival’s return.

The 2020 event was cancelled as coronavirus took hold, and last year’s event was held despite the shadown of tight restrictions. But on March 30 the world’s second largest gathering of comedians after the Edinburgh Fringe will be back, with more than 400 shows already on sale.

Brits and Irish acts visiting Melbourne include Phil Wang unveiling his new stand-up show The Real Hero In All This; sister duo Flo & Joan with their latest show, Sweet Release; festival favourite David O’Doherty; Fern Brady tackling death and other issues in Autistic Bikini Queen; and Mark Watson with his new show, This Can’t Be It.

Other international stand-ups performing in the almost four-week-long festival include Carl Donnelly , Stephen K Amos , Arj Barker , Jason Byrne , Jeff Green and John Hastings .

Chortle will also be back reporting – and reviewing – from the festival.

For more details, visit the official Melbourne International Comedy Festival website .

Georgie Carroll digs around infectious nurses folds to see what they are packing, hopefully it’s viral.

2022 Australian Podcast award Best Podcast Nominee

“Finally… a podcast for nurses! Love this.”

Tikimonster1

“Must listen for nurses, Georgie really understands what its like to be a nurse… and she’s so funny.”

jbmate_2022

“Had me in stitches! Every nurse out there will relate to the hilarious antics and observations or Georgie and her guests. A must listen.”

Princess orca

uk comedian tour australia

Georgie Carroll is best known as the UK born, Australia based Nurse turned comedian as she grafted 20 years on the healthcare front line before swapping the pen torch for the spotlight. She has now retired from nursing but has taken with her an unparalleled comedy voice and a staunch online medical following that have made her viral, in the best way, many times over. The most viewed of her viral clips is the ‘’3 stages of nursing’’. The terms dolphin, penguin, and Orca used in the clip are now ingrained in international nursing vernacular.

Nurse Georgie is an undeniable live comedy powerhouse. ‘’Sista Flo 2.0 is her latest stand-up show. It has toured over 150 dates in Australia (Selling out most performances) and won the Best Comedy Award at the Adelaide Fringe. The show continues to be a remarkable success with a sold out debut Edinburgh Fringe season and UK Tour in 2023 and a massive by demand return tour to the UK scheduled for 2024. A versatile and dynamic performer – Georgie has been unstoppable in live spaces moving swiftly from operating theatres to the London Palladium, the Sydney Opera house, and the Hammersmith Apollo.

Not shy of the camera – Georgie released her debut comedy special on Australian television in 2021 and is a regular on Australian television, having been seen on: The Project, Would I Lie to You? Have you Been Paying Attention? Just for Laughs and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Allstar and Oxfam Galas. She has recently stormed her UK TV debut by reaching the live semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent 2023, she was adored by audiences and judges alike.

Georgie also has a podcast because who doesn’t? Her hit podcast, The Swab, is now in its 3rd Season with over 125,000 listens and a nomination for Best Comedy podcast 2022 under it’s belt.“……the podcast didn’t set out to be funny, it was just me chatting to everyday nurses, staff room banter style. Turns out that this format is never not funny’’ Georgie.

Georgie is also an acclaimed and best-selling author. Nurse Georgie wrote the best-selling nursing “bible” “Off the Charts”, (Pan Macmillan) which was nominated for the 2023 Russel Prize for humour writing.

Everything Georgie does is a genuine, hilarious, riotous celebration of the big hearted, no bullshit nurses that sooner or later play a part in all our lives.

Internationally renowned for his inimitable style Avati, who is Australian born with an Italian heritage, is one of the most significant and pivotal comedians of his generation who, undoubtedly, is directly responsible for the ethnic comedy circuit around the world today.

For the past 30 years Joe Avati’s routines about growing up with a culturally diverse background have gained him a cult following around the globe. Avati has also become the master of treading the very fine line of saying whatever everyone seems to think but no one dares to say whilst not resorting to the use of profanities or vulgar shock tactic routines and in doing so allowing audiences of all ages to attend his shows. He has a razor sharp wit and his observations are not only deadly accurate but extremely relatable to his growing international audiences. Joe Avati is, without doubt, one of the world’s most loved and successful comedians of his generation.

Australia concerts in 2024: here’s a list of shows and tours coming up

Artists touring Down Under in 2024 include Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Hozier, Laufey, aespa, IVE and more

Will Champion, Chris Martin and Guy Berryman of Coldplay performing in 2023, photo by Jordi Vidal/Redferns via Getty Images

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA, it’s poised to do just that.

From debut headline shows for breakout artists to bustling festival sideshow programs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a stellar batch of musicians make their way Down Under in 2024. Read on for NME’s roundup of all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia this year.

Here are the concerts and tours coming to Australia in 2024:

James Taylor: An Evening with James Taylor & His All-Star Band When: April 12 – April 28 Find tickets and more info here

If there was ever a festival made for James Taylor & His All-Star Band at this juncture of his 50-year career, it’s Day on the Green . The singer will perform at wineries in Queensland (Sirromet Wines in Mount Cotton), and New South Wales (Bimbadgen in the Hunter Valley, and Centennial Vineyards in Bowral) across April 2024. Taylor will be accompanied by Aussie pair Josh Pyke and Ella Hooper .

Taylor is also playing his own headline shows. After selling out dates in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, new shows have been added in those cities. A Live Nation pre-sale begins February 9 while general on-sale starts February 12.

Chase & Status When: April 19 – April 28 Find more info and ticket waitlists here

After a new mixtape, charting singles and landmark Boiler Room set, drum’n’bass lifers Chase & Status celebrated a huge 2023. This year, the British duo will bring the party to Australia and New Zealand on a sold-out co-headlining tour with Australia’s very own Luude. They’re notably playing RAC Arena in Perth, on top of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Recommended

SZA When: April 19 – May 2 Find tickets and more info here

Fresh off winning three Grammys, SZA has announced a tour of Australia and New Zealand this April. The ‘Kill Bill’ singer will be performing two shows in New Zealand and eight across Australia, with shows confirmed for Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Beth Orton When: April 24 – April 30 Find tickets and more info

Initially slated to appear in Australia in November 2023, Beth Orton  rescheduled her Australian tour to April 2024 and added an extra show in Tasmania. The folk musician will now embark on a four-date run with performances in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane from April 24 to April 30, with tickets for the original cities still valid for the rescheduled dates. Tickets for the additional date at Hobart’s Odeon Theatre are accessible here.

Nick Cave (solo) When: April 25 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

The legendary Nick Cave embarks on a solo tour of Australia (read: without the Bad Seeds) this April, playing two shows in Melbourne and five in Sydney. Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood will be on bass duties for these shows at Plenary Melbourne and State Theatre Sydney, which are all sold out.

The Dandy Warhols When: April 25 – May 1 Find tickets and more info

The Dandy Warhols will make their return to Australia in April 2024 armed with their new album ‘Rockmaker’. So far, they’ve scheduled dates in Brisbane , Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. If you missed them when they toured down under with Hoodoo Gurus in 2022, this is your chance. Find tickets here.

Elephant Gym When: April 26 – April 28 Find more info and tickets here

Elephant Gym isn’t the result of a random band name generator; “elephant” refers to the Taiwanese math rock band’s bass-led grooves, while “Gym” denotes the “agility” of their rhythm. The trio will perform their technical and idiosyncratic instrumentals at three shows on the Australian east coast for the first time this April, supporting sleepmakeswaves.

6LACK: Since I Have A Lover Tour When: April 26 – May 1 Find tickets and more info

R&B favourite 6LACK (pronounced ‘black’) will return to Australia in April to tour his new album, ‘Since I Have A Lover’. The four-date jaunt will take him to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Niall Horan: ‘The Show’ Live On Tour When: April 26 – May 4 Find tickets and more info

Niall Horan will take ‘The Show’ on the road down under in 2024. The ex- One Direction member’s world tour comes in support of his third solo album ‘The Show’ , out June 9. For the Australian leg, he’ll perform arena shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Groovin The Moo sideshows When: April 29 – May 11 Find tickets and more info

Sadly, Groovin The Moo is no longer going ahead this year – but many of the artists who would have played the touring festival will still be forging ahead with their own Australian headline shows. Singer-songwriter Claire Rosinkranz, Wu-Tang Clan legend GZA (performing a set dubbed ‘Liquid Swords Live’) and Stephen Sanchez will all perform headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

Toronto indie rockers The Beaches will also perform their own dates, playing shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in May. Find more information and tickets for all sideshows here .

Jessie Reyez When: April 30 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

Jessie Reyez will tour Australia for the first time in autumn, playing three shows along the east coast. The Canadian R&B singer will bring cuts from 2020 debut ‘Before Love Came to Kill Us’ and 2022 follow-up ‘Yessie’ to Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on April 30, before shows at the Forum in Melbourne and the Tivoli in Brisbane. Find tickets here .

Nothing But Thieves: Welcome To The DCC World Tour When: April 30 – May 7 Find tickets and more info

Nothing But Thieves cleaned up on a sold-out tour of Australia last year – and they’re back for more. The UK alt-rockers have announced the second Aussie leg of their Dead Club City World tour, which will kick off at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on April 30, continue on to Brisbane and Melbourne, and wrap up at Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on May 7.

Mahalia: In Real Life When: April 30 – May 8 Find tickets and more info

Aussie Depeche Mode fans are an incredibly patient bunch. The last time the British synth-pop titans toured the country was in 1994, meaning nearly three decades have passed since they last paid us a visit. But good things come to those who wait, and it seems there is a glimmer of hope for those hoping to catch the band Down Under.

Comedian Arj Barker reportedly kicked out a breastfeeding mother and her newborn baby from his show in Australia Saturday night, forcing a handful of furious attendees to walk out of the theater in solidarity.

Barker clashed with the mother at the Athenaeum Theater during his Melbourne International Comedy Festival, where the 7-month-old baby made a few gurgling sounds.

“I was sitting there and she gurgled a bit,” the mother, Trish Faranda, told 3AW Melbourne . “The equivalent if someone was coughing.”

Comedian Arj Barker encountered the mom and her baby during his show at the Athenaeum Theater in Australia.

Faranda claimed that Barker stopped and acknowledged the baby before he cracked a few jokes about the situation.

“At the end of this skit of a little baby in the room, he said I speak baby and she said “Take me outside.” At that point, I was like I don’t think he was joking about that,” she recalled.

The mother claimed her child made a “little noise” again, but was “just being a baby.”

Barker approached Trish for a second time due to the disturbance.

“I was actually breastfeeding when he came and stood in front of me and he was basically telling me to leave,’ Trish said. “People were laughing and I don’t think he was joking. So I said to him, do you actually want me to leave? And he said, “Yes I do.”

A group of “ten or 12 people” — including one man — walked out of the 863-seat auditorium over the “humiliated” mother’s departure.

The woman’s family member claimed on X that Barker said the pair were “ruining his train of thought.”

“Thanks to the countless women, and one grandfather, who left in protest. Atrocious. You’re in @cityofmelbourne at an International Comedy Festival. Have an ounce of respect,” the relative said.

“A woman has purchased a ticket, for a night out with her sister and friend, to laugh and enjoy herself and you badger her and encourage her to leave and get a refund.”

Faranda told newspaper The Age she didn’t face an issue when she brought her baby to see Australian comedian Dave Hughes.

Barker said the show had an age requirement of at least 15 years old and said the infant was disturbing his performance.

Barker, dubbed “Australia’s favorite American comedian,” slammed theater staff for allowing the child into the show.

“The show is strictly age 15 plus as clearly stated on the ticket site. She had an infant with her. The baby was disrupting my performance,” Barker said in a statement.

“On behalf of the other 700 people who paid to see the gig, I politely told her the baby couldn’t stay. She thought I was kidding, which made the exchange a bit awkward,” Barker added. “I felt bad about the whole situation and stated this on the night more than once. I offered her a refund. Theatre staff should not have seated a baby in my audience in the first place.”

The tense exchange divided the internet over theater etiquette.

“I am livid at hearing this,” Australian politician Ellen Sandell said . “It’s hard enough for new mums to participate in society with all the barriers put in front of them – to be humiliated like this, for just trying to enjoy the comedy festival, is awful.”

However, critics faulted Trish for bringing the young child into the intimate setting.

“Ridiculous to take a small child to, show clearly stated age 15+. Very inconsiderate to every other person in the venue,” another person said.

“I’m a parent and I think he was right to ask her to leave after she failed to consider the other paying audience members,” one X user said. “Most comedy shows are not much more than an hour. Organize a babysitter or don’t go.”

Jim Jefferies hits back at Marty Sheargold after radio star’s rant

Comedian Jim Jefferies has fired back at Marty Sheargold, after the Triple M star blasted him on air for missing an interview.

Comedian Jim Jefferies has fired back at a Triple M radio presenter who called him a “deadsh*t” on the radio earlier in the week.

Marty Sheargold, who hosts the Triple M breakfast show in Melbourne, was less than impressed when Jefferies failed to rock up for a prearranged interview on Monday morning.

Jefferies was meant to appear on the show to promote his upcoming national comedy tour, Give ‘Em What They Want , which is being presented by Triple M.

“I’m supposed to do a pre-recorded interview with him to help him sell tickets … and he just won’t get out of bed,” Sheargold claimed on air.

“Pull your fingers out of your arse and do your job, that’s what you’re here for,” Sheargold said.

“Sell tickets to your own show. It’s not my responsibility to sell tickets for you, ya deadsh*t!”

Jefferies responded to Sheargold’s comments during an interview with Canberra’s Mix 106.3 on Tuesday afternoon.

“If I knew who Marty Sheargold was, I’d be really upset by this whole incident,” Jefferies joked.

“I’ve never met him, nor do I know what he looks like, but it seems that he’s very upset with me, so he obviously knows me,” he told the CBR Wrapped hosts.

“Me and Marty don’t have a relationship in any way, (but) he’s talking about me like someone who’s known me for years.”

Jefferies also set the record straight about why he failed to rock up to Sheargold’s studio for the interview on Monday.

“I had just flown in from America the night before and I said, ‘I can’t get up because I’m too jet lagged, but I will do phoners (phone interviews), and so I will ring into the radio station,’” Jefferies explained.

“We did that, and for whatever reason that information wasn’t passed onto Marty, so Marty got upset.”

Despite the harsh words from Sheargold, Jefferies said things were “all good” and that he wasn’t “mad” at the Triple M star.

If you’re unfamiliar with Jefferies, he’s an Aussie comedian who’s based in the US where he’s enjoyed a very successful career.

He’s had nine comedy specials and had his own talk show in the US called The Jim Jefferies Show which featured Brad Pitt as the program’s weather reporter.

He also hosts quiz show, The 1% Club , on Channel 7.

As for Sheargold, he’s one of Australia’s most loved comedians.

He’s been on radio for more than 20 years, and regularly appears on TV shows including Have You Been Paying Attention? and Fisk .

A Melbourne radio host was less than impressed when comedian Jim Jefferies failed to show up for a prearranged interview.

Steve Price tore Kyle Sandilands to shreds on The Project on Monday night. The radio star has responded, and he didn’t hold back.

Jackie O Henderson is usually quite private despite her public job, but she’s opened up about her sex life in detail.

Will Lopez Vs. Lopez Return For Season 3 Following Season 2 Finale? Here's What We Know About NBC's Comedy Slate

Lopez vs. Lopez isn't alone.

Mayan Lopez and George Lopez in Lopez vs. Lopez Season 2x09

There's no more stressful time of year to be a TV fan than the spring, when the fates of favorite shows are decided. Lopez vs. Lopez , which teamed legendary comedian George Lopez with real-life daughter Mayan Lopez for primetime, ends its second season on April 30 without any news of a future beyond the 2024 TV schedule . So, with the show on the bubble, let's look at Lopez vs. Lopez Season 2, the other comedies that have not yet been renewed, and what NBC's schedule could look like for the fall.

Lopez Vs. Lopez Season 2

The second season of Lopez vs. Lopez debuted not too long after George Lopez received a Lifetime Achievement Award , which prompted the comedy legend as well as daughter Mayan and showrunner Debby Wolfe to open up about how much the industry has changed over the course of his career . Unfortunately, his off-screen accomplishments didn't translate to Season 3 renewal ahead of the second season finale. The wait is still on.

On the whole, that shouldn't be taken as a sign of doom for fans of Lopez vs. Lopez . It was one of NBC's three comedies for the early months of 2024, and neither of the other two have been renewed at the time of writing either.

That said, it's not lost on me that while Night Court and Extended Family aired one episode weekly for their second and first seasons, respectively, NBC quickly burned through the ten-episode Season 2 of Lopez vs. Lopez within the month of April, with two episodes each Tuesday night.

NBC's Full Comedy Slate

NBC's lineup was light on laughs in 2024 following the WGA writers strike , with Night Court , Extended Family , and Lopez vs. Lopez as the only sitcom options, and the latter not arriving until April. At the time of writing, Night Court is not yet set for a third season despite a successful Season 2, and Extended Family – boasting sitcom veterans Jon Cryer , Donald Faison, and Mike O'Malley – is also on the list of series not yet renewed or cancelled .

The most recent report from Deadline on all three shows' renewal odds stated that Night Court was most likely to be renewed, with conversations happening with production company Warner Bros TV. Extended Family (which made some huge BTS changes ) and Lopez vs. Lopez were listed as on the bubble, although it's worth noting that this most recent report was from mid-April. There have been no updates since more episodes of George Lopez's show have aired.

NBC's 2024-2025 TV Schedule

While the network has not yet announced a full schedule for the TV season starting in the fall, there is enough information for some guesses. Despite renewing mainstays like One Chicago and two of the three Law & Order shows early on, Quantum Leap was cancelled, and La Brea ended after an abbreviated third season. Those are the only scripted cancellations at the time of writing, although Law & Order: Organized Crime is reportedly moving to streaming for Peacock subscribers .

And there are currently two sitcoms in the works: St. Denis Medical , starring Wendi Mclendon-Covey in her first new post- Goldbergs role, and a potential sitcom starring The Voice 's Reba McEntire. The former was intended for a spot in the 2023-2024 TV schedule before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, while McEntire's project has not yet received a series order.

So, while there will be some vacancies in NBC's lineup due to shows that ended, were cancelled, or (probably) moved to streaming, there are also some other shows in the works. It's possible that the fate of Lopez vs. Lopez could depend on the network's reactions to the Reba McEntire pilot, but unfortunately, we can only wait and hope for good news.

I wish there were more definitive facts to share, but it's a waiting game for now. You can always revisit earlier episodes of Lopez vs. Lopez streaming, with the full first season available with a Netflix subscription and both seasons so far with a Peacock subscription.

Laura Hurley

Laura turned a lifelong love of television into a valid reason to write and think about TV on a daily basis. She's not a doctor, lawyer, or detective, but watches a lot of them in primetime. CinemaBlend's resident expert and interviewer for One Chicago, the galaxy far, far away, and a variety of other primetime television. Will not time travel and can cite multiple TV shows to explain why. She does, however, want to believe that she can sneak references to The X-Files into daily conversation (and author bios).
