So you’ve decided to enter the RV lifestyle, but as you start to research, you’re a little overwhelmed by the various sizes, types, and floorplans available. Since you clicked on this article, you’re probably at the stage of figuring out what towable travel trailer options are available for your vehicle, which may have a limited tow capacity of under 2,500 lbs. When I started off RVing, I was in the same boat. I didn’t have a truck, little towing experience, and a budget that limited me to smaller RVs. Don’t worry- we’ll walk through the steps of finding the right RV for your needs and look at some of the best travel trailers out there that are small, lightweight, and under 2,500 lbs.

Small lightweight travel trailer on scale

An important place to start this conversation is to better understand vehicle tow ratings, RV weights, and how you combine the two. Over the past several years, I’ve helped hundreds of new RVers with their RV purchasing decision, and one weight is one of the first topics of the conversation. Luckily, even if you have a small tow vehicle, there are still some great travel trailer options to choose from.

In this article, we’ll cover understanding weight ratings and tow vehicles and look at some of the best lightweight travel trailers on the market. However, if you’re just looking for a short list of lightweight trailers, here are my top picks. More details on these trailers are available further in the article:

Every vehicle, whether a truck, SUV, or car, will have a specific weight that it can safely tow. It’s pretty obvious, but the bigger the vehicle, the more it can likely tow. For example, while you may be able to safely tow a small UHaul trailer with your sedan, even the smallest travel trailer will likely be too much for it. Additionally, just because you have a full-size pickup truck won’t necessarily mean you can choose any RV to tow. It will all come down to numbers and ratings; you need to know what they are for your specific tow vehicle.

Vehicle tow rating is the maximum weight a vehicle can safely pull behind it. Tow ratings are crucial, as overloading a vehicle can lead to significant damages and accidents. Thus, knowing your vehicle’s tow rating and understanding how it relates to RV weights is crucial.

SUV towing RV

Finding the tow rating of your vehicle is a straightforward process. Typically, the tow rating can be found in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle’s identification label, which is usually located on the driver’s side door jamb.

If you cannot access the owner’s manual or the identification label, you can find your vehicle’s tow rating online. In addition, most vehicle manufacturers have this information readily available on their official websites.

The next step you need to do is to calculate your vehicle’s tow rating for the trailer you want to tow

Calculating a Vehicle’s Towing Capacity

Calculating a vehicle’s towing capacity can seem like a complex process that considers various factors, including the make and model of the vehicle, its engine performance, transmission capacity, suspension system, and braking capacity. However, a lot of this will already be done for you by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Below are some steps to ensure you have all the information you need.

  • Check your vehicle’s manual: As mentioned earlier, it should have information regarding its tow rating. The manufacturer usually specifies the tow rating and accounts for various factors specific to your vehicle.
  • Determine your vehicle’s curb weight: Curb weight is the vehicle’s weight without any passengers or cargo. It is usually listed in the owner’s manual or can be found using a simple scale.
  • Calculate the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR): GCWR is the maximum allowable weight of your vehicle, including cargo and passengers, plus the weight of your trailer and its contents. You can find this value in the owner’s manual or use a GCWR calculator online.
  • Subtract your vehicle’s curb weight from the GCWR: This will give you an estimation of your vehicle’s towing capacity. However, it is essential to note that this is not an exact calculation, and slight differences in the number of passengers, camping gear you are hauling, and modifications to the vehicle can influence this number.

Once you know what your vehicle can tow, it’s time to look at the weight of what you’ll be towing (your new RV).

Calculating an RV Weight

Calculating an RV’s weight can be a bit more complicated than determining a vehicle’s weight since it can be affected by various factors. However, here are a few basic steps you can follow to estimate an RV’s weight:

  • Determine the dry weight: The dry weight of the RV is the weight of the vehicle without any passengers or cargo. This information can be found in the RV’s manual or the manufacturer’s website. Every RV will have a dry weight, but it will probably be listed as UVE (Unloaded Vehicle Weight).
  • Consider the weight of whatever you pack in the trailer, including camping gear, clothing, food, bedding, etc. Also, don’t forget water and propane tanks: Water and propane tanks can significantly impact an RV’s weight. For instance, a gallon of water weighs approximately 8.3 pounds, and large propane tanks can weigh over 30 pounds when full.
  • Add the weight of your belongings, water, and fuel to the RV’s dry weight. This will now give you a new weight, which you should use to determine your tow capacity.
  • Also, remember that all RVs will have a total weight of what you can pack. This is the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and includes the UVW and maximum capacity of items you can carry in the RV.

Example of a RV weight information tag

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to consider hitch weight: Hitch weight is the weight of the trailer that presses down on the hitch of the towing vehicle. Generally, hitch weight should not exceed 15% of the RV’s total weight. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the hitch weight in your estimation.

It’s important to note that these steps only provide an estimated RV weight. To ensure accuracy, it is recommended to use a certified commercial scale. It is also recommended to check the maximum allowable weight of the RV and ensure that you do not exceed it to avoid any accidents or legal issues.

When selecting an RV or trailer, it is vital to ensure that its weight does not exceed your vehicle’s tow rating. For example, if a vehicle’s tow rating is 5,000 pounds, it can only tow an RV or trailer weighing a maximum of 5,000 pounds. It is essential to note that exceeding the tow rating puts you and your passengers’ safety at risk and voids your vehicle’s warranty.

Who are Lightweight Travel Trailers For?

Have you ever considered exploring the country but didn’t want to spend much money on flights and accommodations? Investing in a travel trailer might be the solution you’re looking for. However, selecting the correct type of trailer for first-time RV owners can be pretty intimidating. For those looking for something lightweight and easy to tow, a travel trailer under 2500 lbs is a great option. But before making that final decision, let’s take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of travel trailers under 2500 lbs.

Small Camper

If you’re a first-time RV owner looking for a lightweight and easy-to-tow travel trailer, one under 2500 lbs may be an excellent option for you. While they have their benefits, they also have their downsides. It’s essential to carefully consider your travel and living needs before deciding. Overall, they are an affordable and travel-friendly option for those looking to experience road-tripping without breaking the bank. With proper care and planning, you can make the most of your travel trailer under 2500 lbs and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

Towing Lightweight Trailers with an SUV

Choosing an RV is exciting and fun, but making informed decisions is essential before you hit the road. By knowing your SUV’s tow rating, space requirements, fuel efficiency, driving experience, and quality/safety concerns, you can select an RV that will help create lasting memories but do so safely. But where do you begin the process of selecting an RV? Here we offer several tips to help you choose an RV you can tow with your SUV and enjoy your travels.

Selecting a tow vehicle

If you already own a tow vehicle, such as a truck or SUV, this decision is already made for you. However, if purchasing a new vehicle and an RV is in the cards, you’ll have a few more decisions to make. The first thing to remember is that not all SUVs are made alike. Some will be more capable at towing and designed for heavier loads. While the engine size is critical, it’s not the only thing to consider. Many factors determine a vehicle’s tow rating, such as the engine performance, transmission capacity, suspension system, and braking system. Rather than trying to calculate all of this yourself, begin your search by looking at ratings determined by the manufacturer.

Car Lot

Also, towing under your vehicle’s maximum weight rating is preferred. If you constantly tow to its maximum ability, you will stress your engine, transmission, and brakes much more. Therefore, I always suggest towing about 25% below the maximum rating to preserve the life of your vehicle. A short list of some of the best SUVs for towing is listed below:

10 Capable SUVs with Good Towing Capacity

Selecting an rv.

Finding the perfect small-sized travel trailer may seem more like an art than a science. It ultimately comes down to your tow vehicle, RV weight, preferred interior space and floor plans, standard features, and personal preferences. Below are a few tips to help you with this decision-making process:

1. Know your SUV’s tow rating

The first step in choosing an RV is understanding your SUV’s tow rating – how much weight it can safely tow. This information can typically be found in your owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer. You’ll also want to know the towing capacity for your model make, year, and trim, which can vary. The RV you select should weigh within that rating.

2. Determine how much space you need

Before investing in an RV, you’ll want to consider how much space your family needs. Consider your sleeping and living arrangements, including your required storage. Travel trailers come in different sizes and configurations. Be sure to select an RV that can accommodate everyone along with your camping gear.

3. Think about fuel efficiency

One advantage of towing with an SUV is the potential for better fuel efficiency. However, be aware of an RV’s impact on your SUV’s MPG, as this can significantly impact how much you spend on gas during your travels. Selecting an aerodynamic and lightweight RV well-suited for your SUV’s towing capabilities can make your trips enjoyable and economical.

4. Consider the driving experience

Driving an SUV with an RV in tow can be a new and exciting experience, but it’s essential to be aware of the differences in handling between your regular ride and your towing vehicle. RVs with heavier weights, larger dimensions, or higher profiles can impact the driving experience, so be sure you are comfortable with how the RV feels on the road. Always take a test drive and practice maneuvering the RV in an empty parking lot before venturing on the open road.

5. Quality & Safety

Lastly, you’ll want to consider the overall quality and safety of the RV you purchase. RVs are a long-term investment, so thoroughly research the make and model you are interested in, read reviews, and check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure no issues or recalls. You’ll also want to research safety features such as RV-specific brakes, sway control, and stabilization .

Advantages of a travel trailer under 2,500 lbs:

  • Affordability:  One of the most significant advantages of owning a travel trailer under 2500 lbs is that they are relatively affordable. They offer a great option for those who want to take extended road trips without breaking the bank. Moreover, they have lower maintenance costs than motorized RVs.
  • Easy to tow:  This type of trailer is easy to tow, even with smaller vehicles. They are also easier to park and maneuver compared to larger trailers, making them an ideal option for those new to towing.
  • Fuel efficiency : Travel trailers under 2500 lbs have a smaller size and weight, translating to a more fuel-efficient journey. This means that you can travel longer distances without worrying about fuel costs .
  • Costs:  Small trailers will be significantly less expensive than larger travel trailers. Budget shoppers may appreciate the benefit of the low prices afforded by a small RV.
  • Used vs. New : Buying a new travel trailer will always be more expensive than a used one. However, many campers will upgrade to a larger rig at some point, so you can usually find great deals on smaller used travel trailers.

Disadvantages of a travel trailer under 2,500 lbs:

  • Limited space:  Travel trailers under 2500 lbs lack the space larger trailers provide. They have limited living areas and storage space, which can be challenging if traveling with a larger group or having a lot of gear.
  • Comfort : Another disadvantage of having a travel trailer under 2500 lbs is that it can be less comfortable than larger trailers. They are not designed for extended periods and lack the amenities of full-time living quarters.
  • Fewer features : These trailers have fewer features than larger trailers, meaning you may miss out on amenities like a large kitchen area, entertainment area, or a spacious bathroom. You will likely only have a cooktop and (no oven), a smaller dining area, and a smaller kitchen sink. Also, many units with air conditioning will have window-type units instead of a roof-mounted option.

I am having trouble deciding from a travel trailer to a RV. I am lookong used and am feeling a little intimadated to whole Idea of living in and owning a travel house. Wade i think you look a lot like my cousin Braden. Uncanning. With that said what would you recommend? I am a woman, in my 40’s, with a disability looking for a home. I dont need super luxury, but I also dont want something that could potentially be a money eater. I have a variety of tools and sure i can use them and figure things out, but even i know when i shoukdnt or its beyond my knowledge. When i go camping its usually in my car or a tent. What wpuld you reccommend? Are there easier and harder options? Can i paint this rv purple and green if i would like? I have so many questions. I will keep on researching more and more i kind of liked the van home my cousin guy had two yeara ago, althoigh i never dis get to see the inside. I dont know whether to buy a dolly and tow my car behind or buy a new car to tow the home. The 4 cylinder vehicle i have may not be enoigh. I just hope it is big enough for 2 and maybe a dog. I may want to make dinner for aomeone someday. I may want to have my family visit., althoigh theu may have to find their own place to sleep. Wow i better stop, i have no idea.

Hi Courtney!

There is a lot to learn when you’re new to RVing, but I’d say the best thing you can do is head to your local Camping World to actually tour different RV types and floorplans in person. There’s really no substitute for walking into an RV when it comes to envisioning how your lifestyle might look if you owned it.

Aside from that, here are a few links to articles that address some of your questions:

Hi Peter, it’s not a big secret, but the price can vary dramatically depending on the deals and promotions currently going on. Because of that, they are omitted from this article. It would be silly to publish prices when you could potentially get a far better deal than the list price. I’d suggest you go to https://rv.campingworld.com/ if you’re curious about the prices on these travel trailers. The prices can be easily found there.

Yep! Check the inventory on Camping World’s website!

Hi Pam, your right. Dry weight doesn’t include the cargo or the weight of the passengers. It must be factored in. If you’re vehicle is only able to tow 3,500 lbs, then you definitely need to make sure you’re under that with the passengers and cargo included.

Hi Joda, give your local dealership a call and I’m sure they will be happy to assist you!

Hi Jerry, the price will vary depending on where they’re sold. The MSRP isn’t super representative of what you can get them for at Camping World dealerships. Your best bet is to click through to Camping World’s inventory and see what the dealers have them listed for.

What Makes a Camper Trailer Ultra Lightweight?

Travel trailers are less expensive than RVing. If you have a truck or SUV, then it is easier to tow a camper trailer.

Although we’re focusing on the most lightweight units, there are still designs and features you must be aware of.

The only problem you could encounter is owning a model that does not have your necessities or won’t allow you to make adjustments.

What Should Know About the Weight

While large units weighing more than 3000-pounds tend to be bigger, they are also more likely to slow you down.

Back when I first had my RV trip, my vehicle took the tool. Now that I have a crossover vehicle, I discovered that it is best paired with a travel trailer that weighs 2,000 pounds or less.

It is easy to check the actual weight, but you must be aware that it is the unloaded or dry weight. When you add things and accessories, you can go beyond 2,000 pounds.

Typically, you’ll need to bring propane, groceries, water, air conditioner, generator, sleeping mats, and the like. Simply put, the gross weight depends on your needs.

Most of the time, a brand specifies how much added weight you can safely tow.

How Does the Floorplan Affect Weight?

The key formula is = Floorplan and Layout > Size

The floorplan could either make your trailer heavier or lighter. Hence, a well-designed floorplan is necessary.

For example, some travelers like to include household amenities such as loaded kitchens, dining area, storage, and bathrooms.

There are even models that allow users to pull out a section of the wall to create larger spaces.

Although there’s limited space, you can plan how to install a stove or an off-the-ground sleeping area.

If you have an excellent floorplan, you can even include solar panels, roof vents, WiFi booster, and an outside grill.

This is the very reason why I prefer ultra lightweight models because they keep a low profile outdoors.

With a good floorplan and manageable weight, it is easier to set up the trailer at campsites, especially as small camping grounds. At times, it’s even more convenient to set up a trailer than a tent.

This mobility gives you the freedom to pack your gears fast and then move to another location.

Convenient Towing

Although camper trailers are created to be spacious, they should be towable. It’s preferable to use a minivan or SUV for trailers weighing 2000 pounds or less.

Construction

The materials and construction add up to the unloaded weight.Even if a trailer is lightweight, it must have solid, sturdy walls.

This enables the trailer to keep intact during long hours of travel and unexpected weather change. In addition, rigid and tough walls should be capable of providing insulation from noise or cold.

Economical Features

There goes the saying that less is more. Larger trailers tend to use fuel fast, which leads to bigger operational costs. Meanwhile, small units will save you both on fuel and maintenance costs.

Compared to RVs, travel trailers are approximately 2 to 3 MPG better in terms of fuel economy.

Keep in mind that towing a loaded camping trailer diminishes the fuel efficiency of a towing vehicle by a couple of miles per gallon.

Therefore, owning a lightweight trailer means your towing vehicle won’t need 8 to 10 MPG when towing.Furthermore, a lightweight trailer means less space for an AC unit to heat or cool.

Taking Care of a Travel Trailer to Sustain Lightweight Operation

Maintaining a trailer depends on your usage. If you are a frequent traveler, do some maintenance works after each trip or at least once a month.

Here are some ways to keep your unit in good condition:

Check batteries before each trip.

Wash the trailer after each trip.

Open the vents after washing.

Drain the black and gray water waste (which comes from the sink and shower).

Drain the freshwater tank at least once a month.

Always check the tire conditions.

Buy a generator and battery charger in case of emergencies.

Install six-gallon water tanks for backup.

Keep your stuff organized.

If there are some mechanisms or parts you are unsure of, it’s better to let a professional fix it.

Make Camping Fun and Comfortable!

From solo travelers to couples and families—there’s an available ultra lightweight travel trailer! The efficiency and mobility are great investments for every wanderlust out there.

All of the lightweight trailers in this article are affordable and easier to drive and maneuver. Likewise, they require little setup time and have a better fuel economy.

The ultimate decision depends on your requirements and preferences. Yet, I can assure you that any of the models we’ve introduced would suit your needs.

Categories Camping Gear

Whether you are new to camping and want to try a small travel trailer, or you just don’t want to have to buy a new vehicle to tow a camper, these travel trailers under 2,500 lbs. are the perfect fit for you!

Small, lightweight campers are easier to tow. You usually don’t need to add on sway control for campers this size.

ultra light travel trailers under 2500 lbs

They also are easier to find a campsite for. And you don’t need to purchase a new vehicle for towing.

Plus, you can often store these small trailers in your garage or driveway, unlike larger travel trailers.

These lightweight travel trailers 2,500 lbs or less might not have as much space or amenities as the bigger campers, but you gain a lot of freedom with the light weight options. Most of these trailers have bathrooms and are enclosed from the elements. Only a few are pop-up trailers.

We’re sharing out favorite camping trailers under 2,500 lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Not the dry weight or UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight).

What’s the difference?

GVWR is the total amount of weight that the trailer axle can carry, including the dry weight of the camper empty, plus any cargo, fluids or water in the tanks, optional equipment and accessories. The dry weight, or UVW , is not an accurate representation of what your camper will weigh when you are actually using it to travel or camp.

After all, have you ever brought an RV with you to go camping that doesn’t have any food, clothing, outdoor gear or water? Nope, we haven’t, either.

2021 Aliner LXE

Want a small camper with a King size bed and a built-in shower and toilet? Then the Aliner LXE is a great choice for you!

This small camper weighs less than 2000 lbs. Yet it seems roomy thanks to it’s 8 foot height in the middle of the A-frame peak. Plus, a pop-out dormer helps to create extra space.

Lots and lots of windows help make this trailer feel light and bright inside, as well as giving extra ventilation for a cross-breeze to cool you off.

The sofa pulls out to be a queen size bed, unless you want a king size bed. Then you can add the dinette table near the pull out sofa, add another cushion, and then it’s a king size bed.

The height of the camper when closed is 57″ – less than 6 feet high. The length is 15 feet with a width of 78 inches – 6 1/2 feet. Which means you can store this trailer in your garage if you’d like to . Which means you don’t have to pay for storage.

A cassette toilet means you don’t have to drive to a dump station quite as often to get rid of your grey and black tank. Which means you might be able to boondock a little more if you can make the 11-gallon fresh water tank stretch further by bring extra water (here’s the foldable water-storage jugs we recommend).

The toilet and shower are stored in a cubby that opens up to create a makeshift bathroom. It’s not a lot of privacy, but it gets the job done.

With a hitch weight of 180 lbs., you can start camping with your minivan or SUV if you don’t have a truck.

Adding the optional rear hard dormer will give you a bit more space to move around inside this compact camper.

Every Aliner is built by hand in Pennsylvania.

The company states that it takes just 30 seconds to pop up the camper.

While this camper might seem like a perfect fit, you’ll want to check out the video of this Aliner owner for his honest review of using the trailer and see if his concerns are the same as yours.

Key features:

  • King size bed
  • 2 propane tanks
  • Cassette toilet
  • Marine grade flooring
  • Propane heater
  • Command A/C and Heat Pump
  • Outside grill (optional)

2022 ROVE LITE 14FD

This lightweight RV is specifically made for people who want to camp but don’t have a tow vehicle for larger trailers. Weighing in at 1,714 lbs. , this camper has a GVWR of 2,500 lbs., which means you can still bring more than 700 lbs. in supplies and accessories.

Travel Lite Trailers were originally a truck camper manufacturer but have started manufacturing ultra-lightweight travel trailers such as the Rove Lite. The aerodynamic teardrop design makes it easy to tow.

The 5,000 BTU air conditioner is mounted on the side , not on the roof. Which gives you a lower height of the trailer, so that you might be able to fit it into storage more easily.

There is no wood in the sidewalls or the roof or floor of this RV, which means no worry about water intrusion.

A wet bath provides both a shower and a toilet in one area, which saves space, yet still gives you the convenience of a nice shower while camping!

The dinette has bench seating and folds down into a bed. The sofa folds down into a bed. So you could really leave the bed down all of the time if you’d like.

There’s a lot of storage in this camper – more than you might think. Thanks to open shelving storage with cargo netting, and not doors, you can stuff in more items into the storage nooks.

We like the fresh, modern decor of the 2022 Rover Lite 14FD, with lighter colors and faux wood accents. It’s a farmhouse look that is popular.

However, the company would be smart to just remove the tiny little curtain valances which don’t look good. Of course, you could easily remove them yourself.

The two outside storage units are accessible from the inside , which is great for storing clothes and food, or on rainy and cold days when you don’t want to go outdoors to get your stuff.

Key Features

  • 10 gallon fresh water tank
  • 30 gallon grey tank
  • 5 gallon black water tank

ultra light travel trailers under 2500 lbs

If you’re looking for an innovative, ultra-light travel trailer that is compact but spacious, then you should check out the Safari Condo Alto . This is a tear drop style travel trailer like none other we’ve seen.

The Safari Condo Alto weighs in less than 2,000 pounds .

One of the most amazing features of the Safari Condo Alto is the unique roof that lifts up to make the interior space taller for easily walking around. By pressing an electric switch, the roof raises up from the front of the tear drop (similar to how a slide works on an RV) for more spacious room when camping. However, putting the roof down creates an aerodynamic and sleek design when towing and storing.

Another feature that makes this small RV stand out among the rest are the huge holding tanks! These tanks are larger than some RVs that are three to four times this size!

Featuring an all aluminum floor, frame, and articulated roof, the Safari Condo Alto series of trailers has a low center of gravity riding on its independent ‘Flexride’ system.

Things To Consider When Purchasing a Travel Trailer Under 3,500 lbs?

If you are considering purchasing a Travel Trailer under 3,500 lbs, we recommend two courses of action.

  • If you have never owned a small camper before we recommend that you rent one before you buy one. Susan and I did this, and it worked out great for us. We rented a Class C RV for a week and by the end of that week, we knew everything we liked — and didn’t like about that RV. This helped us to purchase the perfect RV for us! And we recommend you “try before you buy” a travel trailer too! It could save you thousands!
  • If you are ready to purchase a travel trailer — or any RV — we highly recommend that you use GoRollick to find the best local pricing from dealers near you on new or used RVs!

15 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lb

Some of these travel trailers under 3500 lbs are truly unique and exciting additions to an already massive market.

With the growing popularity of these economical, versatile, and easy-to-tow travel trailers, you can stake out your next adventure in style and leisure while operating on a smaller footprint.

1. Airstream Basecamp

Airstream Basecamp Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Airstream maintains its well-known, incredible aesthetic on the inside as well as out

⛔ Off-road packages are not much of an off-road upgrade, especially with sensitive components

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW: 2,650 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 850 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 410 lbs

Airstream took its old, classical aesthetic and flipped it around on its head with the Airstream Basecamp . Relaying their classical aluminum exteriors to the interiors is a joy to look at, if you dig shiny walls and a clean, metallic look. The massive, panoramic windows on the front are a huge plus, especially if you take it off-road and find some incredible scenery.

This RV packs everything you need for going off-grid, though you may want to upgrade the underbelly with something a little more resilient to off-road adventures. A standard wet bath, two-burner stove, dining area, bed, counter space, and storage are all packed into a 16-footer.

2. r-pod 171C

r-pod 171C Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Lightweight, highly water-resistant Azdel walls that are lightweight and durable

⛔ Aftermarket options necessary to run the A/C boondocking or off-grid

  • Length: 19′
  • UVW: 2,449 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,725 lbs
  • CCC: 2,276 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 325 lbs

Forest River took the classical, DIY teardrop exterior aesthetic and amped it up a notch with their r-pods , which are really just giant teardrops with more of the features on the inside rather than the outside.

The bathroom is a wet bath, but it’s large enough that you don’t have to sit on your toilet to shower.

The refrigerator is large for the size of the camper, with a large, convertible dinette and a sideways queen bed on the opposite end.

Since r-pods went with the Azdel walls, they are far more durable and long-lasting, with less preventative maintenance throughout the seasons.

3. Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD

Rockwood Geo Pro G15RD Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Dexter Torflex Torsion Axle and indie suspension is standard (Nice!)

⛔ Known for having a loud air conditioner that resounds throughout the RV

  • UVW: 2,883 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,325 lbs
  • CCC: 1,442 lbs

Another Forest River entry on our list is the Rockwood Geo Pro, which sounds pretty bad to the bone for a camper title.

This particular model features a sideways bunk house in the rear and a convertible U-dinette, both of which sleep up to four. It’s an excellent option for short-term family adventures, whether you’re bringing the kids or rocking some big dogs.

The U-dinette fits square against the bunks, with the remainder of the kitchen appliances and furniture continuing with the flow of the U-shape around the RV.

This makes for more room in the center, where all the day-to-day work and activities take place. It’s a smooth idea that really works, keeping you from feeling constrained when indoors for long periods.

4. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 12FBX Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes an AlphaPly roof membrane with gutters for catching rainwater

⛔ No bathroom sink

  • Length: 18′ 6″
  • UVW: 2,839 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,910 lbs
  • CCC: 1,071 lbs

The Palomino Puma Ultra-Lite 12 FBX may carry the Puma name, but it has the shape and versatility of a bulldog. It’s lightweight, yet wide enough and long enough to accommodate all the features we expect in travel trailers under 3500lbs these days.

It’s the tiny things that count and the lengthy design of the dinette, sideways queen, and corner bathroom all work to maximize the central living space.

This Puma does it a little differently than the previous entry, but it accomplishes the same level of space and comfort where it doesn’t seem like there should be any.

5. Scamp 13

Scamp 13 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Multiple floorplans with Standard and Deluxe additions to boot

⛔ Air conditioner isn’t standard

  • Length: 13′
  • GVWR: 1,500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 150 lbs

The tried and true Scamp 13 is the quintessential travel trailer under 3500lbs. Scamp has been around for a long time and they’re known for constructing fiberglass behemoths writ small, that can take on just about anything you throw at them.

The Scamp 13 features more than one floor plan, with the addition of standard and deluxe models, depending on how bougie you want to get.

The designs are solid and comfortable, and feature the level of customization you want for either long-term use or short and sweet vacations.

6. inTech Sol Eclipse

inTech Sol Eclipse Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Large amount of kitchen space for its size

⛔ No dedicated bed, like the Horizon

  • Length: 17′
  • UVW: 2,775 lbs
  • CCC: 770 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 445 lbs

The inTech Sol Eclipse is one of the most exciting and off-grid-ready travel trailers under 3500lbs on the market. There are multiple models under the inTech lineup, with the Eclipse being one of the more popular variations.

Interior space is maximized and simplified, leaving plenty of room for you to make it your own.

The 32-gallon black and gray water tanks, 35-A converter, Dexter torsion axles, all-aluminum triple tube cage frame, 28-gallon freshwater tank, panoramic windshield, and aggressive tread are all combined for the pinnacle in off-road and off-grid adventures. This is the travel trailer you want to pull when going well out into the boonies.

7. Jayco Jay Flight 195RB

Jayco Jay Flight 195RB - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Includes electric, self-adjusting brakes

⛔ A/C unit is known for being a little too loud

  • Length: 21′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,940 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,750 lbs
  • CCC: 810 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 270 lbs

This Jayco Jay Flight has the interior feel of an RV much larger than typical travel trailers under 3500lbs. The interior is designed with a corner bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, and a parallel queen, the latter of which features plenty of room to move around.

As a lightweight travel trailer, that feeling of size is an impressive accomplishment. The bathroom is sizeable as well, though Jayco left out a sink next to the shower. It’s a dry bath as well, which is often hard to find in a travel trailer within this class.

8. Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB

Venture Sonic Lite SL150VRB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Panoramic automatic window is excellent if you like views and spring breezes

⛔ No dedicated sitting area for dining or entertainment

  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • UVW: 3,180 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,885 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 480 lbs

This little camper features a massive rear bathroom, which takes up roughly 1/3 of the entire RV. However, the Venture Sonic doesn’t skimp on the remaining 2/3 either.

The remaining space is utilized very well, with a parallel Murphy bed (which features a free-standing table for dining), a two-burner stove, sink, and 8 ft³ fridge.

Thanks to the Murphy bed and lack of a traditional dinette, the space in the center of the camper is large and comfortable.

There’s also plenty of cabinetry and storage, with a passthrough on the exterior, a row of overhead cabinets over the stove, and another row of overhead cabinets over the bed.

9. Wildwood 164RBLE

Wildwood 164RBLE Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ AccessiBelly feature is amazing in terms of protection and accessibility for repair work

⛔ TV mount is at a harsh right angle, over the queen bed in the front

  • Length: 20′
  • UVW: 2,819 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,880 lbs
  • CCC: 1,061 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

One of the most attractive qualities of the Wildwood 164RBL E is the bright and cheery interior. Stepping inside is like stepping into a breath of fresh air, even if it’s not a very large travel trailer. As you can see in the above floorplan, a lot is going on inside as well.

The 11 ft³ fridge is a huge benefit, especially if you need the extra food for a lot of boondocking or going off-grid.

The bathroom takes up the back 1/5 of the RV, though there’s plenty of room to keep it a dry bath with a sink, toilet, and sizeable shower.

10. Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB

Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Traditional travel trailer at a mind-blowing sub-2,000lbs

⛔ Black tank size is very underwhelming at 5 gallons

  • Length: 18′ 9″
  • UVW: 2,020 lbs
  • CCC: 1,480 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 154 lbs

Sometimes simple is better and, when it comes to travel trailers under 3500lbs, it’s often a good idea to simplify things. The Travel Lite Rove Lite 16RB is both simple and streamlined while retaining a full-featured RV status.

There are some interesting things to get used to in this model, and some that RVers may not like.

For instance, instead of cabinet doors, the Travel Lite features a strong mesh net across all the cabinet openings. There’s also a small black tank instead of a cartridge toilet, which means shorter periods away from home or a campground.

11. Safari Condo Alto 1723

Safari Condo Alto 1723 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Nearly half the Safari Condo Alto is a wild array of windows

⛔ This is a very different aesthetic and may not be for everyone

  • Length: 17′ 3″
  • GVWR: 1,867 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

This is easily the most unique-looking RV on our travel trailers under 3500lbs list. The Safari Condo Alto is a window-full masterpiece. If you like to see everything around you while never stepping foot outside, this is the camper for you.

The lightweight frame, compact design, and interesting floorplans make this RV a lot of fun and an interesting choice for those looking at travel trailers in this class.

You can literally eat lunch underneath a driving rain, and this camper isn’t known for leaking either. There are limitations on storage and holding tanks, but this remains an excellent off-road adventure choice for single occupants, couples, and small families.

12. Coachmen Clipper 15CBH

Coachmen Clipper 15CBH Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Excellent interior space for travel trailers under 3500lbs

⛔ Lack of windows throughout, with the existing ones being fairly small

  • Length: 17′ 10″
  • UVW: 2,644 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,830 lbs
  • CCC: 1,186 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 330 lbs

Coachmen Clippers make for excellent travel trailers under 3500lbs. Unlike most of the other campers on our list, the floorspace on the Clipper is a sideways L-shape, like an elongated hallway that ends in a sizeable bathroom and a very large shower.

The bathroom occupies the corner space while the two bunkbeds take up the opposite corner. All of your typical kitchen amenities are present making this a very complete travel trailer under 3500lbs.

The dinette is a convertible bed with a large shelf above, maximizing the room in the RV while retaining some extra sleeping and storage space.

13. Little Guy Mini Max

Little Guy Mini Max Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Hydraulic life TV is a nice entertainment addition in this class of RV

⛔ No battery monitor

  • UVW: 2,406 lbs
  • CCC: 1,094 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs

The Little Guy Mini Max is one of two campers on our list that approach the true teardrop form (the other is next on the list).

The Little Guy is known for its high-quality interiors, with attention to the finest details throughout. The light tans make for an excellent interior aesthetic and, despite its size, it features all of the major amenities of a traditional camper.

The wet bath is large enough to accommodate both the toilet and shower so as long as you’re not against wet baths it’s a great option.

The entire galley is in the front, which is an interesting change of pace. One of the things people really love about this camper is the number of hidden storage places scattered throughout. If you need to store it, there’s a place for it.

14. Aliner Ranger 12

Aliner Ranger 12 Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Very easy to set up as a hybrid pop-up camper

⛔ Dinette bed is not the most comfortable, an understandable lacking in a minimalist design

  • Length: 15″
  • UVW: 1,450 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,000 lbs
  • CCC: 1,550 lbs

The Aliner Ranger 12 is another of the teardrop-esque travel trailers under 3500lbs on our list of 15.

Its unique, triangular shape is definitely a conversation starter in any campground get-together. However, it’s more of a pop-up camper, in reality, than it is a teardrop.

The interesting triangular roof creates a spacey-feeling interior that other campers in this class struggle to achieve. However, as cool as it looks, you’ll have to go with an exterior shower or only camp at campgrounds where showers are available.

15. KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT

KZ Sportsman Classic 180RBT Exterior - travel trailers under 3500lbs

✅ Tent beds are well-built and maximize the living space within the travel trailer

⛔ Storage options could be better

  • Length: 21′ 9″
  • UVW: 3,370 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,130 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 360 lbs
  • Sleeps: 4 to 6

Last on our list of travel trailers under 3500lbs is the KZ Sports man Classic 180RBT. Unlike the other 14, this RV saves space, and expands it, in an entirely different way, by utilizing fold-out tents for beds. Not only does this save space, but it also opens up the interior to a higher sleeping count.

Thanks to three fold-outs, the interior space is enormous for a travel trailer this size. There’s a full, corner dry bath, a sizeable dinette across from a long bench seat, a fridge, a pantry, and a full kitchen amenity range on opposing walls.

There are also plenty of storage options, though this RV uses a large storage door on the exterior, rather than passthrough storage.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Travel Trailer?

Yes — but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

Our RV Warranty plans allow you to change your mind! If you’re looking to sell your RV to a private party, you can absolutely transfer the policy to the new owner. Additionally, if you are trading in your RV, you can cancel your policy for a pro-rated refund.

We bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes, and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves, and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

Are Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs Big Enough For Families?

Some of them are, depending on your definition of family size. Some travel trailers under 3500 lbs will accommodate a single-child family, while some will accommodate two. If they are particularly energetic and rambunctious, it may take a class-A motorhome to accommodate them.

It’s safe to say that maybe one or none are fit for extremely long-term family use. Homeschooling kids in an Aliner Ranger 12, which will sleep up to 4, is doable but not the most envious task in the world.

If it works for you, then by all means. At the end of the day, the thing that works and works well is what you should go for.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailers Under 3500lbs

Travel trailers under 3500 lbs are extremely versatile and much easier to tow. With the improving technologies and truly unique offerings on the market, they’re exciting for off-grid living, off-roading, regular camping, boondocking, and more.

If you’re in the market for a small, economical travel trailer, these 15 travel trailers should be high on your list.

Most extended warranties start after the regular warranty ends BUT the prorated amount includes the time under the regular warranty. Our original warranty was for 12 months and we got another 12 month extended warranty. After a year we traded for a larger trailer and only got 1/2 of the cost of our extended warranty back, even though it wasn’t going to kick in for another few weeks.

Which of these under 3500 lbs come insulated for cold temperatures 5,500 ft above sealevel? I only have a Subaru Outback turbo that can haul up to 3,500 lbs

I have been looking for an ultra lite trailer under 3500lbs that I can tow with my Nissan Frontier. I would prefer one with bunks and no bed. Also I would like a slide out. Double axle would be great also, but that may be asking for too much.

Good information for one looking for a small trailer. With all of my research, for one looking for a light trailer, the LANCE 1475 is a good one deserving of review. it’s more $$$$ than the afore mentioned unit’s, but it’s really nice.

Good to very good quality used 3500 pounds trailer for a 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel to pull well over the Rockies?

Hey Mike, good article. Did you come across Jayco? …2 full years of warranty. Full shower & tub. This is my third Jayco and I’m happy. I’m cruising in a Jayco Jay flight SLX Baja Edition, 145RB. Dan

Ps: I keep my weight down so I can pull with my Jeep. If I ever get out of a Jeep and into a truck, I’ll keep this article in mind. Thanks.

This was a great grouping of nice smaller trailers! The size is just what an older couple like my husband and I are drawn to. The biggest surprise was the Puma ultra light. It didn’t really stand out from the exterior, but the interior was surprisingly good looking and very functional. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. The Casita, Oliver and Nest are also stunners IMO, but I bet you will have to put your name on a waiting list to get one. I recently camped next to a young couple and their dogs staying in a Wolf Pup that was probably even smaller than the 16FQ and it had a rear entry. It had the same big picture window on the passenger side though. That seems like a really great detail to carry across their floor plans. Thank you for the ‘eye candy’. Happy Travels from Michigan

2021 Winnebago Spyder 23FS

ultra light travel trailers under 2500 lbs

Overview: I am honestly a fan of Winnebago products, I have put my trust in the company through some research, they have a clear commitment to high-quality standards.

This shows in the manufacturing process and in the products they install. in their mobile homes.

That dedication is why they keep making products that appear on my “best of” lists. The Spyder 23FS can best be described as rugged, and when an RV is described as lightweight, it means the company has reduced the thickness of the materials or used the best lightweight products to achieve that lightweight.

Here are a few features Winnebago went in the opposite direction:

Steel Huck-Bolt Frame – Safe enough for trailers and Boeings

Loading ramp : This is a sturdy ramp that probably exceeds the weight of anything you are considering loading onto this toy carrier it holds 3,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds more than the total weight of everything you can carry in the vehicle.

This toy carrier is designed for toys such as ATVs. Almost all ATVs weigh less than 1,000 pounds, and some of them weigh less than 500 pounds. As you can imagine, this ramp won’t have a problem with that and It’s a beast.

Bedroom : One thing I love about toy carriers is the abundance of beds. With a large group of people with you and they, all sleep comfortably.

In total, you get a king-size bed in the bedroom, two sofa beds in the living room, and a queen-size bed that sits in the compartment above the dining room. , “King-size bed?”

This is not common with toy haulers this size, in case you didn’t know.

Counter Space : Unfortunately, there isn’t much counter space unless you’re using the stove and sink covers.

This is partly mitigated by solid laminate tables in the swivel area of these counters.

Basic Features:

  • 100 Gallons Gray tank
  • 50 Gallons Black tank
  • Outdoor shower hot/cold
  • Rearview camera ready
  • Large shower
  • Laminated fiberglass
  • Outdoor quick start awning with LED lighting
  • 40-gallon fuel tank

What is a Toy Hauler?

A toy hauler is a specialized RV designed to accommodate the toys of an active family. These RVs are typically equipped with large garage bays that can handle four-wheelers, dirt bikes, jet skis or boats up to 20 feet in length.

Some models even feature front load-outs for convenient access to your toys.

Toy haulers are rather new as far as recreational vehicles go, which means there’s no consensus regarding their proper classification. A survey by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association found that 605 people — out of a sample of 1697 refer to toy haulers as fifth wheel camping trailers.

Another 720 call them travel trailers and 156 calls them truck campers.

What Makes Them Special?

Toy haulers are the ultimate “one-vehicle solution” for outdoor enthusiasts. If you frequently head out to your favorite lake or forest preserve, it doesn’t make sense to haul a trailer full of gear behind the family car.

And if you have an SUV, putting all those toys inside can be inconvenient and cramped. A toy hauler is essentially a self-contained RV that accommodates your bikes, boats, and ATVs while giving you ample living space right inside the cabin.

Toy haulers are typically built between 24 and 39 feet long but feature as much livable square footage as some RVs that are twice their size.

These units will usually measure between 15 and 20 feet wide, making them easy to tow with just about any good-size vehicle. As you’d expect, the length of the toy hauler is largely due to its huge garage bay, though some models do have bunks above or below that space.

The full list of features in these RVs can be quite long. They’re often furnished with generator hookups, residential-style furnaces, air conditioners, flatscreen televisions, leather furniture, and other comforts typically only found inside bigger motorhomes.

Some come fully equipped for off-grid living and even include water filtration systems so that you don’t have to rely on city utilities when camping away from civilization.

What weight can a light toy hauler carry?

A standard toy hauler can carry 4,000 pounds of cargo this for example is the weight of all it can transport, including passengers, toys, fluids, and gears.

All of the toy haulers that I have shown are ultra-light and sturdy. This should make it easy to haul, but also give them different hauling capabilities.

It is important to remember that even light toy haulers must be able to provide both comfort and hauling capacity.

Be aware of how much space you require and what features are required, especially if you plan to bring toys or lots of gear.

Even if your toy hauler is small or light, you will still be able to enjoy a large area for RVing and additional storage.

Why Choose a Lightweight Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

Weight is essential when it comes to travel trailers. Many people sacrifice the luxuries and amenities that come with expensive, giant fifth wheels and motorhomes. Why? Here is a brief explanation of some advantages of the Lightest Bunkhouse Travel Trailers over other RV options.

Better fuel efficiency when compared to heavier trailers because these lightweight campers are designed to be towed by smaller vehicles, including SUVs and crossovers. You will notice when planning a long-distance travel. Additionally, the reduced weight means less fuel consumption, which translates to lower carbon emissions. Therefore, if you’re conscious of your environmental impact, lightweight bunkhouse travel trailers can be a greener choice for families.

Although this is not always the case, the lightest bunkhouse travel trailers’ floor plans are often short campers , making them easy to maneuver and tow by a wide range of cars, jeeps, and SUVs without buying an expensive truck.

The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers are easy to drive and park even in tight spaces when you take them to an RV park. Also, they are easier to set up once you reach your destination , so you can start enjoying your camping trip sooner.

Moreover, their small size makes them easy to store in any garage or backyard without paying monthly storage fees , reducing the associated monthly maintenance costs.

Compared to other types of campers that quickly devalue their investment value, such as pop-up campers, a bunkhouse travel trailer maintains its resale value , being a good investment that is also easy to keep at a specific budget due to the wide range of options available on the market.

Just because a trailer is lightweight doesn’t mean it can’t have all the amenities you need for a comfortable camping trip and luxury amenities. I would recommend having a clear list of the features you want for your bunkhouse travel trailer before looking for a purchase. Otherwise, it can be overwhelming. The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers can range in price from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands. Make sure you choose a trailer that fits your budget.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are an excellent choice for families because they offer plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably. The bunk beds save space and are especially popular with kids. Additionally, bunk beds provide a space to separate activities between adults and kids, giving each one the space needed to enjoy the travel.

The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers are an excellent choice for families who want to balance the best of both worlds: space, freedom, and ease of use.

The best part of the trailer is its bathroom, which is very important while traveling. Apart from this, you have the quick-disconnect port for the outside grill and detachable power cord with 30-amp service.

While traveling, you are provided with FM/AM/DVD/CD/Bluetooth stereo features for more fun.

Overall Ratings

The overall rating for Jayco Hummingbird is three stars. The rating is due to the exceptional feature of the bathroom. If you can handle the weight of over 2,500, this is your perfect choice.

2. Aliner LXE

Aliner makes the most sustainable and light trailers in the market. You will not find another travel trailer as light in weight as the Aliner LXE. The trailer is easy to maneuver and tow around. You can easily pull it with an average-sized car. It weighs even less than 2,000 pounds.

If you are traveling for the first time, this trailer is your best choice for functionality and setup. It will take just about 30 seconds to set up. In terms of cost, this Aliner LXE is offered at a reasonable price of about $18,000.

The Aliner LXE weighs less than 2,500 lbs and is small but still equipped with a carrying capacity of 705 lbs. Moreover, the tongue weight of the trailer is about 180 lbs and is 15 feet long.

The Aliner LXE appears to be more spacious and airier than the other small trailers. It is provided with many windows. Another cool feature is its reasonable-sized bathroom.

Most small trailers do not offer a bathroom with all the amenities. Moreover, you can collapse the bathroom to create more space.

Other amenities can make your travel comfortable and fun, including a 6-gallon DSI water heater , a microwave, a refrigerator, and an outside shower. It is surprising how many features and amenities are in such a small-sized travel trailer .

3. Palomino PaloMini 131 RL

PaloMini always tries to amaze its customers with exceptional features and amenities in its travel trailer. However, only the older models of Palomino weigh less than 2,500lbs. The new ones are slightly heavier and difficult to handle.

The trailer is spacious enough to accommodate everyone comfortably if you are a family of four. Weighing below 2,000 lbs, the trailer is about 17 feet in length. This is the largest trailer in terms of length according to the weight it offers.

The smaller size will make moving the trailer around the park and small spaces easy despite the weight.

The material used to build the trailer has been chosen, considering its high quality and long-run benefits. The Grade Aqualon Edge material reduces the heat by thirty-three percent gained during the travel.

The aluminum exterior provides added safety from any damage from the outside.

The soft sleeping mattress will provide you with comfy days and nights during your travel. The kitchen has a microwave, refrigerator, and a two-burner cooktop to make your trip more accessible and affordable.

The LED lights add additional elegance to the whole interior of the trailer.

You will not find a fully-equipped bathroom like this in any other trailers of this size. The bathroom has a sink, medicine cabinet, a shower, and a plastic foot flush toilet. Having a bathroom in your trailer is crucial for maintaining hygiene while traveling.

Overall Rating

With no substantial flaws except the weight, the overall rating for KZ Sportsmen Classic 160RBT is 4-star. Even if it is slightly more prominent, it caters to the needs of its travelers without any issues.

6. Riverside Retro Travel Trailer 135

The exterior gives the trailer its character, while the interior shows a new modern ambiance with all the necessities. The checkered floor, birch wood furniture, bright colors, and everything else do justice to its name.

The Riverside Retro Travel Trailer is durable and expandable. The travel trailer is designed specifically for easy towing ability and to accommodate everything you need during the travel. It offers to provide you with home-like travel.

You can sleep comfortably inside the trailer at 16 feet long and 7 feet in width. This is the only trailer in this list that can closely weigh 2,500 lbs. Moreover, the trailer has a freshwater tank holding about 11 gallons of water.

Don’t go with just the name; it sounds old but is equipped with all the modern features. As time is changing, technology has advanced and reached the trailers.

With a rain sensor in the roof’s air vent, you can go anywhere without worrying about your things in the open. The rain sensor will automatically cover the roof when it detects the rain.

For a comfortable trailer like this, it has an overall 4-star rating. The only drawback is that it doesn’t offer much space for essential items such as gas and water. Otherwise, it is excellent to pick, considering the great amenities and advanced technology features it offers.

7. Aliner Ascape Travel Trailer

Exceptionally small, the trailer offers the essential amenities of a toilet and a shower for campers’ ease. The front half of the Aliner Ascape is somewhat shaped like a teardrop.

The small trailer dreams of many campers because even the most miniature vehicles can easily tow them.

The trailer is available to choose from eight different floor plans. You can choose what suits your needs and personal preferences. You can also maximize the space inside because of the rear entry door.

Weighing just 1,600 pounds, you do not have to worry about taking this trailer anywhere, even in small spaces. It is pretty compact and perfect for an individual. It is 13 feet long on the outside and 6 feet 4 inches on the inside. The small size doesn’t let it take the worth and use-value of the trailer.

Within 13 feet, you are provided a cookstove, sink, shower, and toilet. It is unbelievable at first, but it is true. There is a mini-fridge, too, where you can store your food items.

Also, there is enough space to provide a relaxing dining area. You can even transform the dining area later into a bed for a comfortable sleep.

The trailer comes with four stabilizer jacks, aluminum wheels, an electric water pump, and 10″ electric brakes for ease of driving when it comes to the technical part. Moreover, you get a maple cabinet door for extra storage.

With a 4.5-star rating, the trailer benefits many new campers and frequent goers. It aims to provide everything within its compact size.

8. Serro Scotty S188RBR Trailer

The name Serro Scotty has a history that goes back to the mid-1950s. While John Serro was building the trailer manually in Irwin, there was a dog beside the trailer. That’s how it got its name.

Serro Scotty was a big hit during its release because of its classy and retro look. Now, even now, people look up to it for a fantastic weekend getaway or long trips.

The trailer suits everyone, including individuals, small families, and couples.

Weighing just 2,230, the trailer is easy to tow by average-sized cars or other vehicles. Moreover, the trailer is 18 feet in length and 10 feet in height, which is more than enough for a small trailer.

If you have any time for vintage collections, this trailer is like your dream has come true. The exterior and the interior, too, do full justice to the retro look of the 1950s. What’s more, even a small bathroom is included.

Serro Scotty offers a spacious living room without feeling constrained. This new trailer is specifically designed for outdoor camping .

The trailer’s airy atmosphere is because it is surrounded by many windows that provide fresh and cool air. However, you can opt for AC if you cannot handle hot temperatures.

The overall rating of the Taxa Cricket Camper is three stars because of its high cost.

12. Sylvansport Go Pop-up Campers

Some Special Mentions of The Trailers

All 13 trailers were best in size and weight, but some couldn’t make it to the list. Some were heavier than 2,500 pounds, while some lacked one or two features. Here are special mentions for two trailers that are worth considering.

Airstream Sport 16 RB

The Airstream weighs about 2,800 pounds, heavier than the ones listed above. This one is worth considering if you can handle a little more weight.

16’ Scamp Trailer

This is a unique, retro-style trailer with a highly flexible interior. It weighs 1,500 pounds and features a convenient modular system, allowing you to quickly change the layout to suit your needs.

Benefits of Choosing Lightweight Travel Trailers

Towable by a range of vehicles.

Lightweight trailers can often be towed by smaller vehicles, including some sedans, SUVs, and crossovers, not just large trucks. This broadens the range of potential users and makes it more accessible for people who don’t own heavy-duty towing vehicles.

Improved Fuel Efficiency

The reduced weight results in better fuel efficiency for the towing vehicle than for heavier trailers. This can lead to significant savings on long trips and reduce the overall environmental impact.

Lower Maintenance and Operating Costs

The simplicity and reduced strain on the towing vehicle often result in lower maintenance and operating costs. Fewer mechanical issues can arise from towing a lighter load, and wear on the vehicle’s brakes, engine, and tires can be reduced.

Access to More Campsites

Some campgrounds and natural sites have restrictions on the size and weight of trailers. Lightweight travel trailers can access more remote or restricted sites that might not accommodate larger RVs or trailers.

Flexibility in Travel

The ease of towing a lightweight trailer allows for more spontaneous and diverse travel plans, including weekend getaways or exploring less traveled roads without worrying about the limitations of a more extensive setup.

What is the Lightest Travel Trailer with a Bathroom?

The current market’s lightest travel trailer with a bathroom is a tie between the Aliner Grand Ascape ST and the TLRV Rove Lite 14FD.

These compact yet fully equipped travel trailers offer the convenience of a wet bath, making them ideal for travelers who value comfort and practicality.

Despite their comprehensive features, these models maintain a lightweight design, with a fully loaded weight of only 2,500 pounds each.

This makes them easy to tow and more fuel-efficient compared to heavier alternatives. Indeed, when asked what the lightest travel trailer with a bathroom is, these models stand out as top contenders.

How Much Should I Spend on a Travel Trailer?

On average, you can expect to invest anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 for a base-model travel trailer. However, it’s important to note that the final cost of the travel trailer can be influenced by various factors, such as the brand, size, and features you choose.

For more luxurious models with advanced features and amenities, prices can quickly soar as high as $200,000 and beyond. Therefore, consider your financial capacity alongside your desired comfort and convenience features.

What Travel Trailers Are Built to Last?

The most credible answer would be fiberglass travel trailers . These models are designed to endure harsh conditions and hold up well over time.

The durability of fiberglass, combined with its lighter weight compared to other materials, makes it an ideal choice for travel trailers.

Furthermore, they offer a perfect blend of softness and strength, making them appealing to seasoned RV owners who frequently go camping.

Last Thoughts

Travel trailers under 2,500 pounds are ideal for those passionate about outdoor adventures. Whether planning a weekend camping trip or a cross-country journey, these lightweight trailers provide all the necessary features.

They come equipped with sleeping spaces, kitchen areas, and bathroom amenities, ensuring all the comforts of home even when you’re on the road. The trailers are known for their simple yet cozy interiors, providing a pleasant and comfortable living space.

The unique, retro-style design of these travel trailers under 2,500 pounds features a highly flexible interior that can be adapted to suit different needs and preferences.

However, it’s important to note that the trailer’s weight may increase with personal belongings, so careful packing is advised.

While these models have less storage space than larger models, they offer enough room for essential items, making them a practical choice for solo travelers, couples, and small families.

Despite their compact size, these travel trailers do not compromise on quality or comfort, making them an excellent choice for travel enthusiasts.
