Touring University of Michigan’s Big House

Touring University of Michigan’s Big House

As the daughter of a high school football coach, football is just in my DNA. I was always a fun date in high school and college when it came to Super Bowl parties or other big game events. I was the girl that watched the game, yelled in outrage at the refs, and contemplated if the next play would be a pass or a running play. This was all while the other ladies stayed in the kitchen doing other things.

So anytime that the opportunity is presented to me to go behind the scenes of something football related, I jump on that opportunity.

That’s where Michigan Stadium, in Ann Arbor comes in. Most often referred to as The Big House, this behemoth of a stadium is currently the largest college football stadium in the country.

How many seats does The Big House have?

The Big House has a seating capacity of 107,601. That’s a lot of your closest friends sitting together and watching the University of Michigan take on whomever they are playing that week.

What you need to know about the Michigan Stadium Tour:

The tour is between 60 and 90 minutes long, depending on the size of your group and the number of questions those in your group may have.

How much is the tour of The Big House?

The tour costs $20 per person (or a minimum of $100 total), so grab 5 of your friends and check out the stadium.

To schedule a tour, contact the Special Events Office at (734) 764-4599 or [email protected].

Ok, enough of the details, let’s talk about my experience touring the iconic stadium.

The Michigan Stadium Tour Experience.

First, I need to note that the tour I was on was part of a media tour so our time was limited, as we were on a tight schedule.

We started by pulling right up to the stadium and driving through the area where you normally walk, and wait in line for what seems like forever to grab a pretzel or a snack. When (not if) you go on this tour, this will also be your experience as well. This may seem insignificant to you but, to me, I was struck by how still the normally packed stadium really was.

Tour of Michigan Stadium - Ann Arbor Michigan - Family Vacations U.S.

From this point, we took an elevator up to the club/press box level. The nickname “The Big House” originated when announcer Keith Jackson was opening a game and said “Welcome to The Big House” and the name stuck from that point on. I tell you this now, because when we stepped off the elevator, we were greeted by photos of the iconic announcers in Michigan history and Bill, our extremely knowledgeable tour guide shared this nugget with us.

The big house as seen from the press box. - Family Vacations U.S.

The next stop on the tour included a peek into the press boxes and the spaces where network TV does their show. It is quite awe inspiring to take a moment and think about the folks that have sat in these seats and watched nail biter games. Plus, these seats offer some pretty fantastic views.

Next we got to look at the door that holds the secrets to the plays that get reviewed. Our tour guide shared with us that they don’t share the same angles with those watching TV as the group of officials who are reviewing the calls. Bill told us that there are about 10 retired refs that are on hand just for these important review moments.

From there, we were shown an example of the luxury suites that are available for lease. Ranging from $60,000 to $90,000 these suites aren’t exactly going to be covered by your couch cushion change, unless of course, your couch cushions hold that sort of cash, in which case…let me know and I’ll help you scrape it up.

The yearly fee does not include food, so you’ll want to make sure that you budget for that. A point of interest, The Big House is a dry stadium, meaning they do not sell alcohol, including serving it in the suites.

Next, we got back into the vehicles and drove around to the rear of the stadium, to the section closest to the Crisler Center (the University’s basketball arena). It is a rather unassuming area, but behind two plain doors, was the game day locker room, and we got to go in!

Entrance into the tunnel that leads to the field at Michigan Stadium - Family Vacations U.S.

I loved this part of the tour so very much. As we were in the locker room taking in the space, I thought a lot about the various players that had stood in the very spot that I was in. Desmond Howard, Tom Brady, Charles Woodson come to mind. I could imagine the fiery halftime speeches that were given along with the tears that fell after a hard fought game, players unable to bring themselves to change back into their street clothes and rejoin the general public.

Inside the game day locker room at The Big House.

Just as the players who were suiting up to take the field would, we left the locker room doors and turned to head down the tunnel and on to the field. Again, another surreal moment. Not to mention the tunnel was long and very sloped. Which I found out was due to the fact that the playing field actually sits about four stories below street level. So those seats that seem like they are so very high about the field, they are actually right about street level.

The tunnel leading out to the field from the locker room at the iconic Michigan Stadium. - Family Vacations U.S.

The walk onto the field was so very cool as well. I know I keep saying that about every part of the tour, but it really was. The field was very awe inspiring, especially imagining what it must be like to look up into the stands as a player and hear the roar of the crowd.

They shared with us some other very interesting tidbits about the field, but I will save them for you to discover on your tour.

If you are ever in Ann Arbor, I can’t recommend a tour of The Big House enough. It just might turn you into a Wolverine fan, or at the very least, restore your love of college football. Make sure you keep your eyes open, you may just see Sasha Obama in the University of Michigan student section.

Incredible Video Tours Michigan Football Facilities

  • Author: Christopher Breiler

When it comes to facilities for college athletics, the University of Michigan provides its student-athletes with some of the top amenities found anywhere in the world.

Michigan's cutting-edge athletic facilities include a $168 million, 280,000-square-foot South campus Performance Center, a $14.8 million upgrade to the Football Performance Center inside Schembechler Hall and a $21 million, 32,000 square-foot weight room.  Additionally, the University of Michigan became the first Jordan-brand school - giving student athletes access to a seemingly endless supply of Michigan-edition Jordan shoes and gear.

Needless to say, life is good for a student-athlete at the University of Michigan. That is especially true for members of the Michigan Football program, as evidenced by this awesome video that gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at all of the amenities available to those lucky enough to wear the winged helmet.

An explanation of the most recent facility updates were provided via MGoBlue.com :

Schembechler Hall, constructed in 1990, is named after former head football coach Bo Schembechler. It houses football training facilities and the Towsley Family Museum. The building is connected to Oosterbaan Field House and the Al Glick Field House. The project also includes renovations to team meeting and equipment rooms and administrative spaces. The $14.8 million project calls for the renovation of approximately 24,000 square feet and construction of an additional 8,000 square feet for athletic medicine, rehabilitation, wellness and nutrition for the football program. The combined projects will create one unified performance center for the football program, enabling the entire team to work out at the same time.

Five things to watch in Michigan football spring game

university of michigan stadium tours

Ann Arbor — A year ago during Michigan’s spring practices, motivation was heavily influenced by a loss to TCU in a national semifinal and also by the return of so many key players who chose not to head to the NFL.

Their goal was simple and bold: Win the national championship.

Michigan accomplished that last season . But many of those players who were so instrumental as leaders and were productive on the field are waiting to hear their names called in the upcoming NFL Draft in Detroit. Also gone is head coach Jim Harbaugh, who, after nine seasons with his alma mater, is back in the NFL coaching the Los Angeles Chargers . The defensive staff and Ben Herbert, the director of Michigan’s strength program, left for the NFL as well.

The defending national champions have several major holes to fill on offense. It starts with replacing J.J. McCarthy, an expected first-round draft pick, at quarterback along with the offensive line. Sherrone Moore, formerly Michigan's offensive coordinator/offensive line coach, will be tested as the Wolverines’ new head coach.

Fans will get a first look at the team in the spring game on Saturday at Michigan Stadium. It will be challenging to determine a great deal considering the squads were drafted and position groups mostly split, but one thing players have insisted this spring is that the team culture shaped in 2021 is being maintained.

“As long as the camaraderie is high with us, as long as the team chemistry is there, the sky’s the limit for us,” veteran running back Donovan Edwards said. “Nothing has changed. Coach Moore has continued to lay the foundation and the leadership continues to lead.”

While the team works to continue building its culture, identifying the right personnel as starters on offense, determining depth on defense and finding a kicker are priorities. Here are five things to watch in the spring game:

Post-McCarthy QB situation

Last year, there was no competition for the starting job, with McCarthy firmly in the driver’s seat. It seems safe to say that Michigan will conclude this spring football without a designated starter at quarterback.

Alex Orji, described last year by Harbaugh as the “scariest, most athletic guy on our whole team,” certainly has a chance to be the starter this fall. He was praised for his work on the scout team preparing the defense for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the Rose Bowl and his athleticism was obvious in the opportunities he had later last season. Right now, it seems Orji is the leader in the clubhouse.

Davis Warren and Jayden Denegal have also had plenty of reps this spring, but Jack Tuttle, who had starting experience at Indiana and was granted a seventh season of eligibility, has been limited because of injury and will have his shot at the job in preseason camp.

Rebuilding the O-line

Since the teams in the spring game were drafted, fans won’t see what could be the potential starting lines on either side. Regardless, first-year offensive line coach Grant Newsome has plenty of work to do to find a starting offensive line and backups, considering six players who had starting experience last season were all invited to the NFL combine.

There are some knowns among the candidates, like tackle Myles Hinton and guard Gio El-Hadi, who have had starts at Michigan. Guard Josh Priebe, a transfer from Northwestern where he was a starter, likely is penciled in for a starting role. The spring game will be the first opportunity to see Priebe in a Michigan uniform. This is an important spring for center Greg Crippen and tackle Andrew Gentry to make their moves to become starters.

Names to watch on 'D'

Linebacker Jaishawn Barham, who transferred from Maryland, will make his public debut in a Michigan uniform and certainly will be worth observing as he is expected to be a starter this fall. You might remember Barham from last season's Michigan-Maryland game because he intercepted a pass from McCarthy.

Linebacker Ernest Hausmann, who transferred before last season after playing as a freshman for Nebraska in 2022, said recently he learned plenty from starters Junior Colson and Michael Barrett and is ready to take the next step.

Another name that has come up a lot this spring is defensive back DJ Waller. He and Jyaire Hill are top contenders for a starting cornerback role. Players on multiple occasions have praised edge TJ Guy this spring. It has been a position of depth and while he got some playing time last year, he will be much more involved this fall.

What about the tight ends?

Junior Colston Loveland is a known, well-respected commodity. New tight ends coach Steve Casula recently described Loveland as potentially being the best player on the field at any given time. He will be heavily relied on in the fall considering a lack of depth at receiver.

Another tight end Casula highlighted is Marlin Klein. With the departure of AJ Barner to the NFL Draft, Klein is the heir apparent and the spring game will be a chance to shine. Meanwhile, Max Bredeson, the fullback/tight end, remains a tone-setter who relishes blocking.

Moving on from the Corum Era

Blake Corum, the heart and soul of Michigan’s running game the last two seasons, is gone but the room has plenty of talent, starting with Kalel Mullings and Edwards. The best guess is those two won’t play all that much in the spring game, which means a bigger role for Benjamin Hall. Those three will be expected to handle most of the carries this fall.

Cole Cabana and incoming freshman Jordan Marshall could potentially get some late-game carries when the opportunity presents itself. This could be a breakthrough season for Mullings, the converted linebacker, and while new running backs coach Tony Alford said Mullings is still learning the position, the coaches know what they have in him and Edwards.

Tauber Institute students have access to exclusive facility tours that provide insight into operations and lean manufacturing throughout the academic year. Tauber students also schedule regional tours during break periods.

Facility tours provide insight into operations and lean manufacturing. Students are required to attend a minimum of four facility tours. Students learn to:

  • Perform a rapid audit of the state of an operation
  • Judge the relative leanness of an operation
  • Prioritize the targets of opportunity for improvements
  • Develop an action plan to facilitate improvements

The Rapid Plant Assessment workbook is used by students to learn how to plan a tour, how to rate an operation, and how to develop the ability to envision an ideal lean plant based on the concepts of the Toyota Production System. The workbook can also be purchased through Amazon.

The facility visit to the DET1 fulfillment center was a great opportunity to learn more about Amazon’s operational excellence. As a Tauber student, it was great to see many of the lean principles we have learned about in practice. The visit helped illuminate how Amazon could use its mastery of inventory management to deliver the necessary provisions rapidly and efficiently to support disaster relief.

Bears unveil new stadium plan; Gov. Pritzker, legislative leaders ‘skeptical’ of using taxpayer dollars

Bears unveil designs for new lakefront stadium

CHICAGO (WGEM) - The Chicago Bears are asking taxpayers for about $2.4 billion to build a new stadium project next to their current stadium, Soldier Field, along Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago.

The team unveiled its proposal Wednesday at an event at Soldier Field with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The team and the NFL plans to contribute about $2.3 billion towards the development.

The proposal calls for the state using the existing Illinois Sports Facilities Authority (ISFA) to contribute $900 million to the $3.225 billion stadium. The project would also call for an additional $1.5 billion to improve infrastructure around the stadium using taxpayer dollars.

Originally created when the Chicago White Sox built was is now Guaranteed Rate Field, the ISFA was also used to renovate that stadium and Soldier Field. It still owes more than $400 million on the Soldier Field renovation, which was finished in 2003. It’s funded through an existing 2% hotel tax. The Bears’ proposal also calls for the ISFA to refinance its existing debt.

The Bears estimate the project would create 43,000 construction jobs and generate an annual economic impact of $456 million once the project is completed.

When asked about the proposal Wednesday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and legislative leaders were skeptical of the proposal.

“I believe strongly that this is not a high priority for legislators and certainly for me when I compare it to all the other things,” Pritzker, a Democrat, said.

“If we were to put this issue for a vote on the board right now it would fail and it would fail miserably. There’s no environment for something like this today. Now, in Springfield, environments change. Will that environment change within the next 30 days? I think that’s highly unlikely,” said Illinois House Speaker Emmanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside.

The 2024 legislative session is scheduled to end May 24.

When asked about potentially waiting until the fall veto session for lawmakers to pass stadium funding legislation, Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren said he would prefer to get the legislation done sooner.

Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, also released a statement Wednesday about the stadium proposal:

“At first glance, more than $2 billion in private funding is better than zero and a more credible opening offer. But there’s an obvious, substantial gap remaining, and I echo the governor’s skepticism.”

The Bears funding request comes as the White Sox are asking the state for $1 billion to build a new stadium in Chicago. Harmon had previously suggested the teams partner when asking lawmakers for a funding proposal.

The Nebraska softball team pitched out of trouble most of the night Friday but a ninth-inning walk-off home run lifted Michigan to a 4-3 series-opening win in Ann Arbor.

The game headed to extra innings tied 2-2 before Samantha Bland gave Nebraska the lead with a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth. A two-out rally from Michigan in the bottom of the inning tied the game, but the Wolverines missed a chance to win it by leaving the bases loaded.

Then in the ninth, Nebraska stranded a runner at second base in its half of the inning before Ava Costales hit a walk-off home run to left center with one out.

Nebraska's pitching staff did well in limiting one of the conference's top offenses. Michigan entered the game averaging 7.5 runs per game in its first 14 Big Ten games, but the Huskers held the Wolverines to just four runs.

Sarah Harness and Kaylin Kinney were able to escape jams throughout the night to give Nebraska a chance. Michigan had the leadoff runner on base in six of its nine innings but the Wolverines were just 3-for-20 with runners on base and 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Michigan stranded 15 base runners in the game.

Michigan left the bases loaded four times, including the sixth inning when the Wolverines loaded the bases with no outs but did not score. The two runs Michigan scored in regulation were an unearned run in the first inning and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth.

Kinney (15-11) took the loss, allowing two runs in 5.0 innings. Harness started and was charged with two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings. While both pitchers were effective in pressure situations, but the duo did combine to walk a season-high nine batters.

Offensively, Nebraska had just one hit in the first seven innings as Bland's eighth-inning home run was just the second hit of the game for the Huskers. Nebraska was out-hit 9-5. The Huskers drew four walks and were hit by four pitches, but Nebraska was just 2-for-14 with runners on base and stranded 10 runners.

Sydney Gray went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and two RBIs. Bland finished 1-for-5 with her home run. Billie Andrews and Caitlynn Neal produced Nebraska's other hits.

Nebraska fell to 25-17 with the loss and dropped to 8-4 in Big Ten play. Michigan improved to 11-0 at home while moving to 31-14 overall and 12-3 in conference play. Hannah George (3-1) earned the win in relief by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Michigan took advantage of a Husker miscue to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Following a bloop leadoff double, a passed ball moved the runner to third with no outs. Harness then retired the next three hitters with back-to-back ground outs and a fly out, but the second ground out scored the runner from third.

Nebraska's offense was quiet until the top of the fourth. Peyton Cody drew a leadoff walk before Michigan got two outs. Neal was hit by a two-out pitch to bring up Gray, who recorded the Huskers' first hit of the game with a two-run double to left to give Nebraska a 2-1 lead. Bella Bacon and Ava Bredwell were both then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Billie Andrews, who flew out to the wall in center.

Michigan came right back in the bottom of the frame. The Wolverines had a pair of singles to begin the inning and a one-out walk loaded the bases and brought Kinney into the game. Kinney coaxed a comebacker to the circle and threw home for the second out of the inning. The next batter drew a seven-pitch walk to score a run and tie the game at 2-2. But Kinney limited the damage with an inning-ending strikeout.

The Wolverines continued to put together scoring chances in the top of the sixth. The first three batters all walked to load the bases with no outs. But Kinney escaped the jam with a force out at home, a strikeout and a foul out.

In the top of the seventh, Bredwell was hit by a pitch and Billie Andrews walked to put runners at first and second with one out but the Huskers were unable to score.

Kinney then quickly retired the first two batters of the bottom of the seventh before a hit batter, an error and an infield bloop single loaded the bases with two outs. She escaped the jam when Gray fielded a chopper at third and dove to touch the third base bag with her glove just before the runner made it to the base.

In the top of the eighth, Bland led off with a home run to left. After a strikeout, Neal and Gray had back-to-back singles. Bacon then lined  a ball to left where Ellie Sieler made a sliding catch to save at least one run.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kinney recorded the first two outs on just three pitches. A bunt single put the tying run on base and a bloop single that just eluded a diving Neal in right field scored the tying run. With first base open and Keke Tholl, the reigning Big Ten and National Player of the Week at the plate, Nebraska issued an intentional walk. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third so the Huskers issued a second intentional walk to load the bases. Kinney then fell behind the next hitter 3-1 before coming back with two straight strikes for an inning-ending strikeout.

In the top of the ninth, Billie Andrews began the inning with a single. Katelyn Caneda then moved Andrews to second base with a sacrifice bunt. But Andrews was left stranded at second base.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kinney won a nine-pitch at bat with a ground out before Costales hit her walk-off homer on a 1-0 pitch.

Nebraska and Michigan continued their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Central).

Wilpon baseball and softball complex: ray fisher stadium.

Ray Fisher Stadium

CAPACITY: 18,000 (1930-47); 3,000 (1948-85); 4,000 (1986-present) CONSTRUCTED: 1921-23 RENOVATED: 1948, 1965, 1967, 1973, 1983, 1991, 2002, 2008, 2014 NAME CHANGES: Ferry Field (1923-67) Ray Fisher Stadium (1967-present) Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex (2007-present) FIRST GAME: April 21, 1923    U-M 3, Ohio State 2 (5 innings due to rain)    Western Michigan 5, U-M 0

The 2008 campaign marked the inaugural season for the University of Michigan baseball program's new, modern home: the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex, home to historic Ray Fisher Stadium.

Baseball at the University of Michigan has been played on its current site since 1923. In 1967 the stadium was dedicated to Ray Fisher, head coach of the Wolverine baseball team from 1921-58, and a $9 million renovation to the stadium, thanks in large part to Fred and Judy Wilpon, was completed in 2008. Prior to the 2015 season, the playing surface was covered with FieldTurf™ for year-round play, and the latest round of enhancements also featured a new video board, bullpens and increased space in the dugouts.

The architecture includes brick and stone, consistent with that of the central athletic campus. The stands are barrier-free and include 2,500 seats, of which 1,700 have seatbacks. A three-story addition includes administrative offices, a state-of-the-art press box, improved public restrooms, concession areas and a ticket office.

Adjacent to the stadium is a 1,600-square foot locker room that features 30-inch lockers, five television screens, a lounge area, a training room and a nutrition lounge. The locker room connects directly to the 5,750-square-foot indoor hitting facility that includes retractable doors for ventilation during the summer months and is heated for year-round use. The hitting facility includes two dirt mounds, pitching machines, three indoor batting cages and a state-of-the-art video hitting system. Along the leftfield line are three outdoor hitting cages, in addition to four down the rightfield line.

In addition to hosting Michigan's regular-season games, Fisher Stadium has also been the site of several Big Ten Conference Baseball Tournaments.

After moving from Regents Field in the early 1900s, the Michigan baseball team played on the site where Yost Ice Arena currently stands. During this time, the layout of the stadium was changed many times to adjust to the wooden stands that were brought over from Ferry Field. When construction of Yost Fieldhouse began in 1921, the baseball stadium was moved 150 feet west, replacing locker and shower facilities that had stood there since 1912.

Completed in 1923 under the Ferry Field name, the grandstands were originally constructed in 1948. Renovations in 1973 included steel stands that replaced wooden ones, and in 1983 new wooden bleachers were installed.

The ballpark was enclosed in 1967 when then head coach Moby Benedict installed the fence with the dimensions including 330 down the lines, 375 in the gaps and 400 to dead center. The fencing lasted 30 years before being replaced prior to the 1997 season. The Wolverines' old locker room was added under the stadium in 1965, and the coaching staff moved into offices in the stadium in the fall of 1991, which were then renovated in 2002.

Fisher led his teams to a 636-295-8 record, 15 Big Ten Conference titles and U-M's first College World Series title in 1953.
