University of South Carolina Upstate

https://www.uscupstate.edu/

Founded in 1967, the University of South Carolina Upstate is one of the nation’s top public regional universities. What began as a commitment to helping the state avoid a nursing shortage has matured into a more than $500 million annual impact on South Carolina.

Located along the I-85 corridor in Spartanburg between Greenville and Charlotte, N.C., USC Upstate is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the Top Public Schools in the South. We are a major producer of talent for the region, boasting more than 6,000 students, 1,300 new graduates per year, and about 30,000 alumni, many of whom live and work in South Carolina.

USC Upstate is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and is one of four universities within the University of South Carolina System. We have more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business administration, nursing, and education, as well as 15 NCAA Division I sports teams.

Main Campus

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spartanburg is known as "Hub City" for its location between multiple major city centers, including Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. The Upstate region, where Spartanburg is located, is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country and is home to over 450 international businesses, including the largest BMW manufacturing plant in the world. The city of Spartanburg has seen rapid development, which mirrors the region's growth.

Spartanburg enjoys all four seasons with mild winters that may only see snow once or twice a year. The spring and fall offer warm days with cool nights. Summer provides as much sun as you could want with heat to match. Nothing beats our warm summer evenings! Are you looking for some relief from the high temperatures? A quick drive north into the mountains provides some amazing hiking opportunities in the cooler mountain air. The Atlantic Ocean is accessible by car and is most easily accessed by visiting the global city of Charleston, South Carolina.

International students are welcome to join our more than 70 student organizations, which range in interest, including academics, sports, religion, hobbies, and more! Our NCAA Division I athletic events are free for students and happen during the fall and spring semesters. Athletic and exercise facilities are available for use free of charge, and intramural sports are available, including e-sports.

Passport to Adventure

usc upstate travel abroad

For Burns, whose appetite for travel was whetted during a summer trip to Spain led by Maria Montesó, senior instructor of Spanish, the award is a chance to keep building her Spanish skills. “I feel like this is the opportunity I really needed to help with my Spanish major,” she said.

Five other students received grants to cover the cost of a passport. The awards were a new feature of the Global Career Forum this year, and were made possible by event sponsors whose representatives led roundtable discussions with students and provided information about the companies.

What are you looking for?

Suggested search, how to apply, overseas studies application.

Start here by viewing our step-by-step video guide:

You will need a passport that is valid for at least six months AFTER the end of your study abroad program. Overseas Studies recommends that students opt for expedited processing and shipping for all applications. Click below to read more about applying for a new or renewed U.S. passport.

Eligibility and Admission

Students must meet the eligibility requirements set by the USC Dornsife Office of Overseas Studies and the host institution, and they must apply to and receive admission from both institutions. Please refer to  general eligibility  rules and the Eligibility section on the Overview tab on each  program  page. The exceptions are USC Paris and USC Madrid, where Overseas Studies solely determines admission. Note that Overseas Studies will check student conduct records with SJACS, USC Housing and the Title IX office in determining eligibility to study abroad.

Application Requirements

Students must allow ample time to complete the Overseas Studies application. All applications require:

  • On this form, students will list the courses they wish to take abroad. The form must be signed by the student’s academic advisor(s).
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Official USC transcript
  • Students may also submit a receipt or confirmation showing payment for a new or renewed passport at the time that the Overseas Studies application is submitted.

Additional requirements vary by program. Students should review the “How to Apply” tab on their specific program page.

Application Deadlines

The USC Overseas Studies application must be submitted by the USC Overseas Studies deadline. Applications submitted after that deadline will not be accepted, regardless of the host institution’s deadline.

Apply to One Program

Students may apply to only one Dornsife study abroad program unless the program is listed below as “more selective.”

A program may be listed as “more selective” for different reasons (e.g., space or enrollment limitations, higher GPA requirement, history of host institution using unlisted criteria, etc.)

Students applying to one of the following “more selective” programs may apply to a backup program.

  • India – Bodh Gaya (fall only)
  • Italy – ICCS Rome

And of course — elephants!

Stock market today: Wall Street dips to send S&P 500 to its longest losing streak since January

Sinking technology stocks sent Wall Street lower again on Wednesday, and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell to its fourth straight loss.

The index dipped 29.20 points, or 0.6%, to 5,022.21 for its longest losing streak since early January. It’s down 4.4% since setting a record late last month.

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 45.66 points, or 0.1%, to 37,753.31, and the Nasdaq composite sank 181.88, or 1.1%, to 15,683.37.

Tech stocks slumped after ASML, a Dutch company that’s a major supplier to the semiconductor industry, reported weaker orders for the start of 2024 than analysts expected. Its stock trading in the United States slumped 7.1%.

Nvidia dropped 3.9% and Broadcom sank 3.5% to serve as the two heaviest weights on the S&P 500.

The weakness for tech overshadowed stronger-than-expected profit reports from some big companies, including United Airlines. It soared 17.4% after reporting stronger results for the start of the year than analysts expected, lifted by strong demand from business fliers.

The losses also came despite easing pressure from the bond market, which has been dictating much of Wall Street’s action lately. Sharp tumbles for oil prices lessened investors’ worries about inflation, which in turn helped Treasury yields ease.

The 10-year Treasury yield sank to 4.58% from 4.67% late Tuesday. The two-year yield, which moves more closely with expectations for the Federal Reserve, fell to 4.92% from 4.99%.

They gave back some of their big recent gains driven by traders giving up on hopes for imminent cuts to interest rates by the Fed.

Yields on Tuesday had returned to where they were in November after top officials at the Federal Reserve suggested that the central bank may hold its main interest steady for a while. It wants to get more confidence that inflation is sustainably heading toward its target of 2%. Its main interest rate has been sitting at its highest level since 2001.

High interest rates hurt prices for investments and increase the risk of a recession, but Fed officials are concerned after a string of reports this year has shown inflation remaining hotter than forecast .

Traders are now mostly expecting just one or two cuts to interest rates from the Federal Reserve this year, according to data from CME Group. That’s down from forecasts for six or more at the start of the year.

With little near-term help expected from an easing of interest rates, companies will need to deliver fatter profits to justify their big runs in stock price since autumn.

“I think markets are waiting on corporate news to decide where they’ll head next,” said JJ Kinahan, chief executive of IG North America.

Travelers slumped 7.4% after the insurer’s quarterly results fell short of forecasts. It had to contend with more losses from catastrophes.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services fell 8.1% after reporting weaker revenue and results than expected. It was hurt in part by competition in the eastern part of the country and by higher wages for workers and other costs.

On the winning side of Wall Street was Omnicom Group. It rose 1.6% after reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The marketing and communications company highlighted growth trends in most markets around the world, outside the Middle East and Africa.

The stock of Donald Trump’s social media company also continued to swing sharply, this time jumping 15.6%. That followed two straight losses of more than 14%. Experts say the stock is caught up in frenzied trading driven more by public sentiment around the former president than by the business prospects of the company.

In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 added 0.4% after a report showed U.K. inflation fell to its lowest level in 2½ years in March. That could further pave the way for a cut in interest rates there.

Other indexes rose modestly in Europe, and they were mixed in Asia. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.3%, while stocks jumped 2.1% in Shanghai.

Choe writes for the Associated Press. AP writers Yuri Kageyama and Matt Ott contributed to this report.
