Last app update has reduced usability

One of the biggest issues since the last update to 4.4.0 is the window sizing on a 13-inch MacBook Air. When the display settings are set to scaled to 1152x720 resolution, it's impossible to adjust the size of the application window so it's entirely in view and all buttons can be accessed. The resolution I use is necessary for me in order to use my computer given some vision issues. I have no other troubles with window sizes with any other applications, so LastPass is not keeping up with other apps in this regard. There's also a feature missing that exists in other password manager apps that LastPass is missing. There is no way to view previously used passwords. I've seen that 1Password offers this field so that all previously-used passwords can be seen and copied if needed. Another feature that LastPass needs is a "last edited" field so that I can tell when a password entry was last modified. This is yet another feature that exists in 1Password and would be incredibly useful to have so that I can easily tell if I need to update a password based on its age or if I changed a password recently and forgot about it.

Piece of Junk

What a piece of junk. Offline access does not work. The browser extension version is invasive and searches the DOM of pages to find places to put the last pass icon to try and "help" you, wasting up to 5 seconds per page on this useless nonsense. There is no way to turn this off. If you don't like it and uninstall the browser extension, the Mac desktop app has even less support than the browser extension. I dropped my paid account like a hot potato when I discovered that offline access did not work, and I've only encoutered more bugs since then. The user interface of the desktop app is an awful, bug-riddled and quirky interface. It isn't just small problems though, it will discard any changes you've made to records (thus blowing away that new password you just set). It has inconsistent update behavior and weird select behavior. Generating a new password requies at least 10 clicks, some of them on very tiny little icons that don't even make sense. THe whole process is a total mystery. There is no quality assurance or testing being done on this app. I tried to teach my (60+ y/o) grandparents how to use this, to help them use a password manager and get security smart. LastPass was so awful that they gave up and ended up using a piece of paper and a pencil. Thanks for promoting worse security through bad design.

Hiding From Customers

I became a premium user a few weeks ago and have spent a good deal of time moving all of my passwords over to LastPass. It took quite some time to figure out how to use it. Their cutsey little sixty second so called tutorial videos are absolutely useless. I finally got to where I could add a site and get LastPass to use the password but can't for the life of me get it to do the auto fill they talk about so highly. It works on my iPhone but not on my MacBook Pro. What makes this even more frustrating is that there is no contact information that I can find to ask LastPass a question to get it working. They evidently don't want to be bothered by customers wanting to learn how to use their app. I paid for a year and I feel I deserve to be able to use the features I paid for. I would be happy to change my rating if you can let me know how to get the auto fill to work but I'm not holding my breath. As of right now, I wouldn't recommend this app. I am probably going to have to find something else to use as well.

LastPass was a trailblazer and still has a legion of faithful users across the world. It’s not had an easy time over the past few years though, with high-profile data breaches, alongside the rise of several competitors that have set the standard for a modern-style password manager. So, how does the current version stand up to its impressive legacy?

If you’ve never used a password manager before, then it can be something of a revelation. The principle is simple: you create a complex master password and then LastPass will remember all of the others that log you into accounts and online sites. When you get prompted for a login, a LastPass box will open up and auto-fill the details so you can quickly gain access to your account. Easy and very convenient. 

Getting set up is a little bit fiddly if you want to import your existing passwords from your browser password manager (say Chrome) or a rival app, although LastPass does provide detailed instructions for the process, so it’s reasonably quick to move everything across safely.

Once in LastPass, the interface is clean and simple, with the Vault page being home to all your passwords, which you can look at and edit individually. This space is also where you can store additional information, such as payment details so that checkouts are auto-filled when you want to make a purchase, addresses, secure notes, plus important documents like a passport or driving licence. If you have a family member who wants the Netflix password, you can share this securely from LastPass without having to copy and paste it into a text message for the 1,000th time. 

If you want to up the randomness of your passwords, rather than sticking with combinations of birthdays and pet names, then the built-in generator allows you to create complex replacements that have various options – length, upper/lower case letters, symbols and numbers that would satisfy the demands of all sites and apps that can require different things. 

There’s also a security dashboard that shows how decent your current level of online safety is, along with suggestions on how to improve. It’s all standard fare for a password manager, although it lacks some of the customization options laid out by rivals such as 1Password . 

While LastPass does support biometrics (Touch ID and Face ID) for logging into the app, a big omission in the current version (at the time of writing) is support for Passkeys. These are the hot new thing in online security and although LastPass does say support is coming soon, you’ll already find this capability in Dashlane and 1Password.

How to disable your iCloud Keychain and switch to LastPass

The LastPass app on Mac and therefore also the Safari plugin do not work. When I try to log in, it shows me the animation of a safe unlocking and then goes back to the login form. LastPass on Chrome on the same computer works. 

I've deleted the app several times from my laptop using tools that remove all associated libraries as well. I've reinstalled from  https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php  (using both the Safari and the Mac App links). 

LastPass on my iPhone and iPad work fine. 

I reached out to support and they said they would get back to me but now the support login is broken as well. (see ).

Make sure you ask the support person to check to see if any shared passwords are corrupted.  Somehow they have a way to see a corruption in shared passwords.  Once they told me which shared password was corrupted I just removed it from my lastpass and it started working again.

Safari and the Mac Lastpass app have been working fine since.

I am having the same problem.    I filed a ticket with LastPass and followed all the suggestions.  No resolution yet.  Are you using an M1 Mac?  I have to believe it is something unique about M1 Macs or something else since the issue doesn't seem to be happening to all Macs.

Not solved. I understand the theory of this solution, but how do we implement it if we cannot find the corrupt passwords? And if support is no longer working?

If they are no longer doing support, what does one do to even test this solution?

Oh man... I just installed another update and we're back to square one. It is broken again. I'm on LastPass 4.116.0 now. The previous version worked. This one does not.

I've had this for weeks. It's super annoying that I cannot use the Last Pass desktop as a paying customer.

I just see the spinning safe after I enter my username and password. 

I've uninstalled the app, restarted, reinstalled, etc. Just a waste of time.

According to Reddit, you know about this and you are fixing. Is that true? When will I have access to lastpass again?

I'm using a MacBook Pro on macOS Ventura 13.3.1 with an Apple M1 Pro chip. 

Did another full install after talking to support. No job. The bug is persistent.

Hey I may have found a  solution!

I opened up the LastPass app and entered in my login information  and the icon began spinning.  I then immediately went to the menu bar and went to File Menu and did "Clear Cache."

At first it just timed out.  I did it again and I am now logged in using my lastPass App.

I suppose the cache was too full or corrupted or something.. who knows?  It worked!

Don't forget to give me a thumbs up if this worked for you!

When attempting to log in to Lastpass login/password won't "stick." After entering the correct password, the login screen flashes (like the software accepts it), then within a second goes right back to asking for the password again. Safari extension and Lastpass app both react the same.

I had the same issue and opened a support case through  https://support.lastpass.com/s/createrecord/Create_Case  asking to specifically look for a corrupted shared password. They responded within a few hours saying I was right to request this and told me they had found one. But, after I deleted it, the issue was still there.

I then asked to check again and, lo and behold, there appeared to be another corrupted shared password. Deleting that one too, resolved the issue. Yay.

They also mentioned that they are working on a fix...

You are correct that this works. I have seen this for weeks to be a "work around", but it really is not.

First, you will have to do this every time you try to use the app. That is not a working app.

Second, this will remove any changes that you have made while offline! So if you made updates, say goodbye to those. Poof!

Third, while this "gets you in" the app still will not sync while you use this work around (a continuing part of the bug is that the desktop app won't sync anymore), so if you make changes with the app having connected this way, those will not sync and if you make changes elsewhere (say on a mobile app) those will not sync with the desktop app, so although this "gets you in" the desktop app thus accessed is not actually syncing or working.

It has been months now since the desktop app has last worked, because of this bug. Although I am a paying customer (and my company and employees too) and have been for years, I think I'm about ready to switch to another password manager. Does anyone have a recommendation for how to migrate to another app like 1password or a recommendation for another password manager in general? This has become too difficult to work around and lastpass does not seem to fixing it. What should I use instead and how do I migrate?

The suggested an app to be sure it's completely removed before I reinstalled. No joy. Didn't work.

Still doesn't work. I tried that link too, replies take a week or two. They found the corrupted passwords, but did not fix it. 

Yes, I use the LastPass Authenticator. It is triggered by my login request and I approve on my iPhone. 

Are you trying to login in the app directly or via the extension menu in Safari? If you tried in only one of the 2 options, can you try the other one?

I also had an issue where I had to login again and faced the same issue.  I did find another place in the community that said they were able to resolve the issue by finding and removing a corrupted "shared" password.  I reached out to LastPass and they identified a corrupted shared password.  I removed it and so far I am not facing the issue any more.  Crossing my fingers!

My main reason for using lastpass rather than the keychain is the ability to share passwords with my family.  I too have been very frustrated by this apparent bug.  Anyone know of another password keeper that allows you to share passwords?

Trying to login in the app directly, and via the extension and experience the same issue. Safari as the browser. After reading a couple other posts yesterday, I found that others were having this issue around June of '22 (possibly). I believe an update fixed the issues at that point. Since I'm unable to stay logged in for more than about 3 seconds, I can't tell if there is an update available.

How did you get last pass to find this corrupt password thing? Is that a check that I can do or do they have to do it? How would I even ask them?

This worked! 

I reached out to support. They just emailed me back with a corrupted shared password. I removed it and tried to log in again. At first, I saw the spinning safe but then I cleared the cache and it immediately logged me in.

I'm looking to understand if you are logged in but somehow the app does not bring you to the vault. You would have the Log Out button, as opposed to Log In to LastPass

I quit the Lastpass app, restarted, logged in. I was kept logged in for about 15 seconds or so, then logged back out. My app menu looks like the example, but Quick Search and Vault are not active links. Where your screen shot says Log Out, mine says Log In to LastPass. Extension menu in Safari shows the login screen. Asks for the password because I can't stay logged in.

I tried the uninstall and then install.   No change.    I  can use Last pass with Chrome but not with Safari.   OS/X Lastpass menu also shows "Login to Lastpass" where your example says "Log Out".   Safari extension menu shows login window which when trying to login just blanks after 10 plus seconds of spinning.

LastPass is warning of a malicious campaign targeting its users with the CryptoChameleon phishing kit that is associated with cryptocurrency theft.

CryptoChameleon is an advanced phishing kit that was spotted earlier this year, targeting Federal Communications Commission (FCC) employees using custom-crafted Okta single sign-on (SSO) pages.

According to researchers at mobile security company  Lookout , campaigns using this phishing kit also targeted cryptocurrency platforms Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini, using pages that impersonated Okta, Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, Twitter, Yahoo, and AOL.

During its investigations, LastPass discovered that its service was recently added to the CryptoChameleon kit, and a phishing site was hosted at at the "help-lastpass[.]com" domain.

The attacker combines multiple social engineering techniques that involve contacting the potential victim (voice phishing) and pretending to be a LastPass employee trying to help with securing the account following unauthorized access.

Below are the tactics LastPass observed in this campaign:

• Victims receive a call from an 888 number claiming unauthorized access to their LastPass account and are prompted to allow or block the access by pressing "1" or "2".
• If they choose to block the access, they're told they will get a follow-up call to resolve the issue.
• A second call comes from a spoofed number, where the caller, posing as a LastPass employee, sends a phishing email from "support@lastpass" with a link to the fake LastPass site.
• Entering the master password on this site allows the attacker to change account settings and lock out the legitimate user.

The malicious website is now offline but it is very likely that other campaigns will follow and threat actors will rely on new domains.

Users of the popular password management service are recommended to beware of suspicious phone calls, messages, or emails claiming to come from LastPass and urging immediate action.

Some indicators of suspicious communication from this campaign include emails with the subject "We're here for you" and the use of a shortened URL service for links in the message. Users should report these attempts to LastPass at [email protected] .

Regardless of the sevice, the master password should not be shared with anyone since it is the key to all your sensitive information.

If you genuinely believe that anything from LastPass was ever a concern, that is the real issue. There isn't a single company on planet Earth that hasn't been hacked or compromised. To believe otherwise is beyond ignorant. The difference is, with LastPass, what it did was prove that vaults are uncrackable. To believe that a company is only good as long as they don't get hacked is just ridiculously silly. I've used LastPass for years BECAUSE of their model. It withstood, this proving its efficacy. My passwords will never be compromised unless I were to fall for a fishing scam like the one mentioned in the article. However, given my decades of IT experience, that will never happen.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention to security news. LastPass has had a number of security incidents over the years, including a vulnerability that allowed for stealing passwords directly from the browser extension. They are probably the least secure "cloud" password storage service provider. Most security experts recommend other services such as 1Password or Bitwarden if you absolutely must use a "cloud" based password storage service. Personally I recommend KeePass, which I feel is much safer than storing your passwords in the "cloud". cloud = someone else's computer (in this case servers operated by these service providers)

i just put mine in a locked.txt file on my phone... with 1 password hosting multiple different passwords for other locked txt files that lead up to my actual file. no icloud or online stuff except for onepassword.

" I used to know someone who would save passwords in a TXT file on an encrypted USB flash drive. It's probably not the best way to store passwords, but it worked for him.

This is why I switched to KeePass a long time ago. Local password storage is much safer than any service that stores them online. It also gives you control over what type of encryption is used in your password storage file, so you don't just have to trust that a service provider is using the best encryption they have available.

What's most unbelievable is that all these web services (this one included, I have no doubt) store passwords in readable form. (A day or two ago I contacted a bank I do business with and it was clear the contract worker I dealt with had access to my password.) The Michigan Terminal System was using trapdoor encryption to store passwords back in the 1970s. It's true a password manager would need to store the password in a recoverable form, but it could at least encrypt it to make hacking harder.

Service providers like LastPass supposedly encrypt your password store, and I think most of them use your master password as an encryption key to make it more difficult for an attacker to decrypt your stored passwords. As for their security for your master password, I assume they hash it in some way and store the hash, but I don't remember what LastPass supposedly does. It's been well known for more than 15 years that storing plain text passwords is bad, and anyone still doing it is going against NIST guidelines for password storage. https://auth0.com/blog/dont-pass-on-the-new-nist-password-guidelines/

Don't press 1 or 2, LastPass warns users

LastPass, a widely used password manager application, has issued a warning to its users advising them to not press option 1 or 2 if they get a call purporting to be from the service. This is due to a new scam that can potentially compromise account master passwords with all the misery that would bring. It is imperative to be aware of this and take the necessary precautions to safeguard your LastPass account. Here’s what you need to know.

Mike Kosak, a senior principal intelligence analyst at LastPass, has issued a warning to all users of the password manager. He urges everyone to be aware of a cybercrime campaign that aims to obtain your master password and compromise your password vault account. This campaign is linked to something known as CryptoChameleon, a phishing-as-a-service kit that makes it easier for criminals to steal personal information. The kit provides everything they need in a ready-made package, lowering the bar for criminals looking to steal data.

“Basically, a cybercriminal can use these kits to create fake websites to steal passwords and other authentication data,” Kodak said, “and either use these credentials themselves or sell them to other criminals.”

The criminals create fake login pages using genuine branding to ensure the fraudulent sites look like the real deal. By directing victims to these sites, in this case initially via what appear to be genuine support calls from LastPass itself and then as the scam evolves using a link from a follow-up email, the criminal actors can harvest authentication data including master passwords.

The first sign of something wrong was when intelligence analysts at LastPass found a new fraudulent domain had been registered but not yet activated. That domain, ‘help-lastpass [dot] com’ was designed to give the casual viewer confidence that it was genuinely associated with the LastPass service. By monitoring this domain the security team at LastPass was able to identify as soon as it went live, purporting to be a login page to the service, and initiate steps to have it taken down.

However, because the CryptoChameleon phishing kit continues to provide criminal customers with the necessary branding to clone a LastPass service, disruption of the scam cannot be guaranteed. This is why Kosak has gone public to warn LastPass users of the threat and describe exactly how it unfolds.

• The victim is called with an automated message informing them their LastPass account has been accessed from an unknown device and gives instructions to either press 1 and allow the access or press 2 and block it.
• Pressing 2 does no such thing, of course, but rather triggers a message telling the user that they will shortly get a call from a customer service representative in order to close the help ticket and ensure everything is OK.
• This follow-on call comes from a spoofed number with the caller claiming to be a LastPass employee and informing the user that they have been sent an email that includes a link to enable them to reset their account for security reasons.
• That link, of course, redirects to the cloned login page where the user is asked to provide their LastPass master password. If successful, the criminal will then lock the user out of their own account by changing the primary phone number, email address and master password.

The Press 1 Or 2 LastPass Scam Fallout

Kosak said that LastPass users should bear in mind the following if they are on the sharp end of this all-too-realistic threat:

• If you get a phone call from someone claiming to work for LastPass, hang up and report the details using the [email protected] email address.
• Send a screen capture of any suspicious text messages purporting to be from LastPass to the same abuse reporting address.
• Forward any emails as an attachment to the same address.
• Remember that LastPass or any other password management service will never ask for your master password via phone call, text message or email. For very obvious reasons, it just doesn’t happen. If it does, then it’s a scam.

“We will continue to work diligently to protect our customers and take whatever proactive measures we can to disrupt this activity,” Kosak concluded.
