Tours and tea at usna.

May 6, 2020 9:00:00 AM

Tours_tea_USNA

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is more than an institution of higher learning and military instruction. Its 338 acres on the former grounds of Fort Severn are rich in U.S. and Naval history. As such, the entire campus, also known as The Yard, is a designated National Historic Landmark on the country’s list of National Register of Historic Places .

To qualify for this honored designation, properties must exhibit national historic significance. Approximately 2,300 places on the National Register’s list of 90,000 places are deemed to have such outstanding historical significance that it receives the National Historic Landmark distinction.

Although the safety and security of Academy Midshipmen, faculty, and staff are always paramount, history buffs and the interested public can visit The Yard to experience the historic sites, buildings, and monuments in person. Visitors may explore on their own with a self-guided walking tour. However, the extraordinary stories behind these sites are brought to life in incredible detail by the knowledgeable and professional Official Certified Guides of USNA from the Naval Academy Business Services Division (NABSD).

All guided tours depart from the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center located just inside Gate 1 at 52 King George Street. The 90-minute guided walking tours begin in the morning and then at scheduled times throughout the day.  Seasonal schedules may be found online on the NABSD website .

The guided Historical Walking Tour visits the most popular locations through The Yard.  Visitors can expect to see:

  • Bancroft Hall
  • Memorial Hall
  • Statue of Tecumseh
  • Herndon Monument
  • The Main Chapel and Crypt of John Paul Jones
  • Noon Meal Formation (during the Fall and Spring)
  • Lejeune Hall

Don’t feel like walking?  Catch a ride!  Visitors may comfortably experience USNA highlights during a 75-minute Guided Riding Tour.  These electric vehicle GEM tours may be booked in advance with a minimum of two and up to five passengers.  Sites visited during this tour include:

  • Main Chapel
  • Parade Ground
  • Sports Complexes
  • Jewish Chapel
  • Monuments and Memorials along the Severn River Seawall
  • Foremast of the USS MAINE
  • The Ellyson Air Park
  • Historic Cemetery

In addition to public tours, both private and group tours are available. One of the more unique tour experiences is the Tour and Tea at the US Naval Academy.  Following a tour of many of The Yard’s highlights and the USNA Museum, participants will attend afternoon tea at the Naval Academy Club.  Following British afternoon tea tradition, attendees will sample finger sandwiches, scones, and other sweet treats, with their choice of tea or coffee.  A USNA souvenir and postcard book are given as favors to commemorate the special occasion.  The Tour and Tea cost is $60 per person with a group minimum of 20 people.

Additional private group tours are also available.  Special interest groups will enjoy a one-hour tour to visit the Jewish Chapel and Levy Center, where Midshipmen gain an appreciation for faith-based traditions.  While groups interested in leadership training will benefit from the Corporate Leadership Program, where retired military officers serve as facilitators. And music appreciation groups will take a deep dive into music history with the Annapolis Music Man Tour.

Group tours for students include Navy Way Boot Camp for 1st through 5th graders, educational field trips for 4th through 12th grade, a Junior Leadership Program for 13-15-year-olds, as well as admissions briefings for those interested in learning more about attending the Naval Academy.

Extend your time at The Yard and enjoy lunch at The Alley or Drydock Restaurant. In the mood for something lighter? Grab a cup of coffee and a light snack at the newest cafe on the Yard, 1845 Coffee .  Ask about the discounts available for tour participants.

The Naval Academy campus is open to the public provided visitors comply with strict access requirements.  All visitors 18 years and older will need to provide an unexpired U.S. government-issued photo ID card or unexpired passport.  All non-US citizens must present an original unexpired passport for entry.  Please see the Armel-Leftwich website for additional access details.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, the Yard is not currently open to the public. We hope to see everyone on the Yard soon.

Upon arrival in Annapolis, Maryland, the group meets our USNA certified guide for a 60-minute walking tour of the prestigious United States Naval Academy. Founded in 1845, the Naval Academy is home to 4,000 of our country's future naval leaders. As you stroll through the beautiful campus you will experience the sense of military tradition and heritage all around us. Your visit includes the Naval Chapel, the Crypt of John Paul Jones, Bancroft Hall, and various monuments that represent defining moments in the Academy's history. At the conclusion of the tour, you will walk to the Maryland State House for a guided walking tour of the building. Construction of the State House was begun in 1772 but was delayed by the outbreak of the American Revolution, and then completed in 1779. The interior of the original section of the State House was constructed of wood and plaster. The newer colonial revival section has matched veined Italian Marble walls and columns. A broad black line across the columned lobby marks the line between the two sections. The Maryland State House was the first peacetime capitol of the United Stated and is the only state house ever to have served as the nation's capitol. After your tour, lunch is included at an area restaurant. Next, you head to City Dock to take a 40-minute sightseeing cruise with spectacular views of the Annapolis Harbor and the banks of the US Naval Academy. Hear about the Annapolis' integral role as an historic seaport and even catch a glimpse of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Once back on land, you have free time to browse the downtown shops and get a bite of dinner on your own before departing for home.

Touring the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland

Founded in 1845 by George Bancroft, Secretary of the Navy, the US Naval Academy , located in the heart of Annapolis, Maryland, is the college that trains officers for both the Navy and Marine Corps. What started as a 10 acre campus with 50 students and 7 faculty members has expanded to a 338 acre campus with over 600 faculty (half civilian and half military) and 4,500 students called Midshipmen (women are called Female Midshipmen ), copied from the British naval ranking. Women were first admitted in 1976 and today, represent approximately 30 percent of Midshipmen. Each year, the Academy accepts approximately 1200 students, about 10% of applicants. All Midshipmen are on scholarship and are required to serve a minimum of five years in the Navy or Marine Corps following their four year college experience, culminating with a Bachelors of Science degree.

Over 80,000 people take guided tours each year, and over two million people visit the Academy each year. Our guided walking tour is one of the BEST tours we have ever taken and we think it is a must see and do when you’re exploring Annapolis, or driving through to Washington DC or Baltimore, Maryland, both a half hour away.

Travel Tips:

  • Guided tours are offered seven days a week throughout the year. There are a variety of walking tours, car tours, and even a music tour. Check here for up to date information on booking a tour and tour fees. We recommend the 90 minute Historic Walking Tour .
  • There is a small parking lot in front of the entrance to the Visitor Center ; guests must check in a Naval officer and show photo ID. More information on parking in and around the Academy here .
  • Restrooms and a large gift shop are located inside the Visitor Center near the admissions check in desk, as well as inside the US Naval Academy Museum at Preble Hall . **Museum is closed on Tuesdays and federal holidays.
  • Dining options on the Academy campus include 1845 Coffee Shop at Gate 3 and a few other options here . Check here and here for a good list of local Annapolis restaurants.
  • Plan on 90 minutes for a tour (it adds up to more than a mile of walking!), and additional time to explore the Museum at Preble Hall, Visitor Center exhibits, and gift shop.

11 Stops on the Tour of the Naval Academy:

  • The statue of Bill , the Naval goat mascot. Since 1890, the Navy has competed against the Army in a football game called America’s Game. The legend goes that the Navy sailors brought a goat to the first game and considered it a good luck charm. Over the past 130+ years there have been approximately 30+ “Bills” who live on a dairy farm in a secret location (to prevent goat-napping) and attend Navy home football games..
  • The Lejeune building , which is home to the sports Hall of Fame and many athletic facilities including the pool and wrestling complexes.  Midshipmen are required to spend three hours every day (3pm-6pm) in athletic practices (they can choose their sport) and must pass annual physical fitness and swimming tests. The Hall of Fame includes displays and records held for each sport , the collection of footballs from wins against the Army (to date in 2023, Navy leads with 9 more wins over Army), the two Heisman trophy Navy recipients, and a list of Navy Olympians.
  • Captain’s Row on Porter Road, where department heads live with their families. Built from 1900-1908, high ranking officers usually have three year tours at the Academy. Red flags out front indicate a Marine Corps family and black flags indicate a Naval or civilian family.

usna guided tours

  • Dahlgren Hall, named for Admiral John A. Dahlgren, the “Father of Naval Ordnance.” Built from Maine granite, the Hall is the oldest building on the campus. Inside there are offices and training spaces for the midshipmen not open to the public. The upper level displays (alphabetically) a flag from every US state and territory and a replica of the Wrights Brothers B1 Flyer. Outside, two Japanese torpedoes launched from Japanese destroyers in World War II are displayed.
  • The Herndon Monument . It is a tradition dating back to the 1950s for first year Midshipmen to attempt to climb the 20 foot monument, which is greased by upper Midshipmen, to replace the hat at the top of the statue with a current Midshipmen’s hat. The Midshipmen form a human pyramid to try and reach the top of the statue, which honors Commander William Lewis Herndon, who died aboard the SS Central America, which sank during a hurricane in North Carolina in 1857.
  • The Main Chapel , built in 1908 to seat 1200 worshipers with a 1940 addition of 800 additional seats. The copper plated dome can be seen from most points around campus. There are several Tiffany stained glass windows, a 4500 pipe organ, and a memorial pew (where no one is allowed to sit) to honor officers lost in action during the Vietnam War. Be sure to look up at the rotunda with the faces depicting the ages of man etched in the ceiling.  There are weekly Catholic and Protestant services held in the main chapel, open to Midshipmen and military and Academy staff. The campus also includes nine other chapels for worship of other faiths, but they are not open to the public.

usna guided tours

  • The crypt with the casket of John Paul Jones , in the lower level of the Main Chapel. Jones was the first known naval commander in the Revolutionary War and was given the title “Father of the US Navy.” Jones never lost a battle as part of the Navy and is famous for saying “I have not yet begun to fight” . Naval officers went to Paris to dig up Jones’ grave in 1899 and bring it back to Annapolis. The crypt is black and white marble with replica seaweed cascading over it to resemble being buried at sea. The crypt is surrounded by sets of three flags: the Union flag, the Stars and Stripes flag, and the Serapis flag.
  • Bancroft Hall , the midshipmen’s dormitory. Named for the Academy’s founder, the dormitory is spread out over 33 acres and houses all 4,500 midshipmen for all four years in 1800+ rooms. Visitors can peek inside a model dormitory room and read the wall of profiles of notable graduates and the running list of the Midshipmen Commanders of the Regiment.  Midshipmen are not allowed to walk through the famous, main doors of Bancroft Hall until after they graduate.
  • Memorial Hall , located inside Bancroft Hall, which is used for both quiet reflection and important ceremonies. Considered the “highest place of honor” at the Academy, the Hall displays a replica “ Don’t Give Up the Ship” flag, a Killed in Action scroll of honor and Operational Loss Panels for alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice, and several historic naval paintings.

usna guided tours

  • The Preble Hall Museum, free for all visitors and open six days a week (closed on Tuesday). Guided tours end near the museum, so guests can explore on their own (and it’s free to visit even if you’re not on a tour). Built in 1939 has hundreds of thousands of artifacts related to the Navy and US history. The first floor has extensive exhibits of naval history showcasing some of the 600 flags (and the original Don’t Give Up the Ship flag), 1,000 medals, and 6,000 naval history prints and paintings in the museum’s collection.  The second floor showcases dozens of English model warships from 1860-1900, the largest in North America, and a short video highlighting the history of the museum.
  • Visitor Center: Watch the 15 minute introductory video and walk through several exhibits showcasing the history of the Academy. Make sure to peruse the large gift shop for souvenirs.

Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island

Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island

This is the 3rd post in a series detailing my recent visit to Newport, Rhode Island. To read about celebrating the holiday season in Newport, click here and to read about the International Tennis Hall of Fame, click here .

Fort Adams has the honor of being both the largest fort in the United States and the only fort never attacked. Although, because it was never attacked or “officially in use”, it is not part of the National Parks program like many other forts throughout America. Fort Adams, located in Newport, Rhode Island, is one of twenty fortresses built after the War of 1812, took over 30 years (from 1820-1850) to complete, and is named after the second American President, John Adams. It was most effectively used as a training facility for West Point graduates before their official postings.

The entire complex is a state park and open to the public, free of charge.  The public is welcome to use the restrooms, walk (leashed) dogs, fish, picnic, and even use the public beach.  Sail Newport , housed on the property, rents sailboats and also gives lesson.

On a recent visit to Newport, my family took the 90 minute, guided tours. We loved it. All of us, adults and children alike, found it interactive, informative, and even a little scary.  Steve Marino, our tour guide, made sure to engage our children throughout the tour.  You’ll need to start in the Visitor’s Center to purchase tickets. They offer a AAA discount. There are restrooms and a gift shop with snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. Strollers are allowed on most aspects of the tour, and you can leave strollers outside some “indoor” and tight spaces.

Holiday Gift Guide 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of year- a time for thanksgiving, celebrations, and gift giving! Since my children were born, my husband and I have made a conscience effort to “gift” our children with experiences over tangible items. The material possessions we do gift them are purposeful- educational, enriching, and challenging. The past two years we have shared some suggestions (you can read my 2018 and 2017 gift guides) and this year we’d like to continue the tradition with some new ideas for the children in your life. And read to the end, we’ve got a GIVEAWAY TO LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTER!

10 Art Museums With Virtual Activities for Kids

You might be surprised to learn that my family, children included, like visiting art museums. Art museums have come a long way from just “silently standing and looking at paintings some old guy or girl made a million years ago.” Today, so many art museums are finding new ways to engage children and welcome families into their galleries. We wrote about the many benefits of taking children to art museums last year in this post featuring the Guggenheim in New York City. A huge bonus? Most of these museums, and other art museums, offer FREE admission for children, usually ages 16 and under.

Naumkeag in the Berkshires

Naumkeag in the Berkshires

The summer home of attorney Joseph Choate, his wife Caroline, and their five children in the late 1800s, Naumkeag is the perfect representation of a country estate of the Gilded Age. The estate is named after the Algonquin word (meaning “good fishing spot”) used for Salem, Massachusetts where the Choat family originally lived.

The original gardens included two terraces, a topiary garden, and an arborvitae alley. A farm, greenhouse, orchards, and vegetable gardens provided much of the food for the family. The family also enjoyed hiking, swimming, and horseback riding on many of the 48 acres of the estate, which is located in Stockbridge in western Massachusetts. The Choate’s daughter, Mabel, inherited the property and spent significant time creating many additional gardens. She deeded it to the Trustees of the Conservation upon her death in 1958 and the 44 room estate was turned into a museum opened to the public in 1960.

Such a cool place. Is you daughter hoping to attend one day?

no… but we have such respect for all military <3

The Preble Hall Museum looks beautiful! I would love to visit Maryland some day, the east coast looks great! So different from the West where I’m from. Great post!

The US Naval museum in Maryland looks like a great place to visit. I would love to visit the 20 foot Herndon Monument and the Pebble Hall Museum. Adding this to my bucketlist. 🙂

As a former Navy guy, hubby would definitely want to tour the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. And we would want to plan to take the guided tour. It might take us awhile to go through all the stops since he would want to read it all. Looks like a fascinating spot to visit.

We toured the USNA this summer. We were there for Induction Day! It was incredible to see.

This is definitely one of the best guides to any place I’ve seen. We just visited Annapolis for a day but it’s definitely somewhere I would go again because it seems we missed so much. The pictures are beautiful. Any explanations and history art the room and exciting. Great job.

Meant to say “any explanations and the history of each room and space are thorough and engaging” . Thank you again for great job.

Thank you so much for writing these down!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

5 places to take your mom on Mother’s Day, for more than just brunch

Here’s your reminder: There are just over two weeks until Mother’s Day. You don’t want to be the bad child or partner frantically trying to make reservations on Saturday afternoon or, even worse, making your mother or your kids stand in a non-moving line outside an acclaimed breakfast spot on Sunday morning, hoping that a table opens up.

Eating brunch on Mother’s Day may be traditional, but it’s not the only fun way to hang out with Mom. We’ve built five Mother’s Day itineraries, designed around enjoyable activities — such as looking at colorful azaleas, browsing a bustling market or taking a stroll along the Potomac — and paired each with a trio of nearby restaurants. We’ve also included kid-friendly restaurants for multigenerational outings. And yes, as of press time, all had reservations available on May 12.

Brunch and a museum

The National Museum of Women in the Arts reopened its doors last fall after an extensive two-year renovation, and the revamped galleries are a natural place to go to celebrate the important women in our lives. “ New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024 ,” the latest installment in the museum’s triennial exhibition series, features 28 up-and-coming artists from the United States and around the globe, working in a variety of media. The main galleries have also “remixed” the permanent collection, organizing galleries based on themes, such as domesticity, or material, such as works in fiber. 1250 New York Ave. NW. nmwa.org . $16; $13 for D.C. residents and visitors age 70 and older; free for visitors 21 and younger.

Nearby brunch options

A timeless dining experience with service that will make Mom feel like a million bucks, Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab is a solid choice, whether the guest of honor prefers a lump crab cake Benedict, seared sea scallops, or what Tom Sietsema called “ one of the best (and busiest) chopped salads in town. ” There’s also a kid’s menu with mini crab cakes and filet mignon. Of note: Brunch drinks, such as bloody marys, mimosas and glasses of prosecco, are half price. 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 750 15th St. NW. joes.net . $13.95-$94.95. To make a reservation: Visit its website or OpenTable .

If you’d like to be entertained while you dine, the Hamilton Live has booked two shows with the Eric Byrd Trio, a swinging ensemble whose jazzy rendition of the album “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has become a staple of the Hamilton’s seasonal offerings. The venue offers a buffet with biscuits and sausage gravy, shrimp and grits, and country fried chicken in addition to the usual scrambled eggs and bacon. Shows at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. 600 14th St. NW. thehamiltondc.com . $55; $25 for ages 12 and younger. To make a reservation: Purchase tickets on the venue’s website .

Try to snag a table on the shady patio at Il Piatto , which offers a view of the Washington Monument. Regardless of the season, the focus is on crowd-pleasers like Florentine or Italian eggs Benedict, tiramisu French toast, sunny Italian shakshuka, or traditional Italian dishes in creamy sauces. Even better: Almost all dishes are under $25 , though a prix fixe menu with bottomless mimosas is available for $39.95 per person. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 900 16th St. NW. ilpiattodc.com . $13.95-$27.95. To make a reservation: Visit its website or OpenTable .

Brunch and a market

Eastern Market celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, and the covered food market remains the heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Weekends bring a lively mix of flea market and farmers market, where farmers selling produce and bakers with fresh loaves aren’t far away from vendors selling handmade stuffed animals, original paintings, crates full of vinyl or vintage coats. Spend time browsing tables on the pedestrianized streets before popping into the market itself, or perusing nearby businesses such as the famed used-book store Capitol Hill Books, foodie destination Hill’s Kitchen or the gift boutique Paris Bleu. Outdoor market open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 225 Seventh St. SE. easternmarket-dc.org .

Eastern Market comes alive with places to eat on the weekends, though some breakfast spots, like the storied Market Lunch and hot newcomer I Egg You , don’t take reservations. Roll the dice if you wish, but these three have guaranteed tables.

Hollis Wells Silverman, a finalist for outstanding restaurateur at the upcoming James Beard Awards , owns a trio of businesses at the corner of Seventh and C streets SE, and the airy California vibe of the Duck and the Peach makes it the star. The sweet-and-savory brunch menu includes pancakes with apple compote or salted maple syrup, huevos rancheros, and chicken chilaquiles. Kids will enjoy the spacious patio. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 300 Seventh St. SE. duckandpeachdc.com . $8-$25. To make a reservation: Visit its Resy page .

Ruta is a rare taste of Ukrainian cooking in D.C., and brunch brings traditional favorites such as a platter of varenyky (meat-and-potato-filled dumplings), spicy kovbasa sausage and eggs, or crepes served with mushrooms, onions and famer’s cheese. Croissants and omelets are available as well. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 327 Seventh St. SE. rutadc.us . To make a reservation: Visit its website .

Adventurous moms, and the ones always encouraging their offspring to “just eat a little more,” will find nirvana at Ambar on Barracks Row, where “Brunch Without Limits” brings two hours of all-you-can-eat Balkan small plates — spicy beef kebabs, cheese pie with yogurt, salads with Balkan cheese, veggie-covered flatbreads, charcuterie and mezze spreads — as well as Americanized waffles and omelets. Add an extra $12.99 for bottomless drinks. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 523 Eighth St. SE. ambarrestaurant.com . $36.99 per person. To make a reservation: Visit its website .

Brunch and a waterfront stroll

Never underestimate the power of the post-brunch walk, especially if it’s along the Virginia side of the Potomac River on a sunny spring day. Stroll through Alexandria’s manicured waterfront parks or soak up the scenery on one of the many benches along the way. If the sky opens up, duck inside the Torpedo Factory , the former weapons forge turned waterfront art gallery and shop, to peruse its many studios and perhaps pick up an additional gift for Mom.

It should come as no surprise that the Alexandria Waterfront is known for its seafood, and Hank’s Oyster Bar — now in a new building — is a favorite, especially for its buttery local oysters on the half shell. In addition to its raw bar, brunch includes build-your-own bloody marys, fresh vegetable frittatas, and good old-fashioned biscuits and gravy, plus small plates like Eastern Shore crab dip and clam chowder with bacon. 818 N. Asaph St., Alexandria. 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. $13-$22, though raw bar prices may be higher. To make a reservation: Visit its Resy page.

Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden , a cozy red brick building on King Street with its own heated patio, will greet you with its terra cotta exterior and warm you with its mix of earthbound and seafood dishes: Choose between the chicken and waffles or its jalapeño popper grilled cheese, or perhaps you’d prefer its spicy n’duja prawn linguine or scallops with risotto; for the kids, it serves favorites like chicken tenders and hot dogs for $9 each. As its name suggests, its signatures are its shellfish and draft beer collection. The latter varies based on the floor of the restaurant you’re seated on, and it also offers mixed drinks and wines for between $13 and $15 a glass. 1106 King St., Alexandria. 11 a.m. to midnight. $9-$32. To make a reservation: Visit its website or OpenTable .

Trek toward the Potomac River and you’ll find a restaurant with a wooden and brick facade emblazoned with golden lettering: Daniel O’Connell’s pub and restaurant is equally earthy and old-fashioned once you step through the doors. Its Irish and American dishes, including the traditional Irish breakfast of sausage, bacon, white pudding, mushrooms, potatoes and beans on toast, are built to be the ultimate comfort food, relaxing to everyone at the table — though hopefully Mom especially. O’Connell’s offers patio seating on a pedestrianized stretch of King Street. 112 King St., Alexandria. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. $16-$24. To make a reservation: Visit its website .

Brunch and flowers

The Going Out Guide declared it in March: The Tidal Basin is officially overrated. Though we’re long past peak bloom, we recommend frolicking in the National Arboretum , where there’s vast open space, just as many beautiful flowering plants and, most importantly, fewer people. The sprawling space is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with plenty of events and activities weekly, and the family can explore the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum within the arboretum. Its map also includes scientific explanations of its idyllic flora and historic scenery — maybe this is finally the year to get that frameable family photo! Free admission. usna.usda.gov .

Palette 22 ’s newest location in the Union Market district will be offering bottomless sangria, mojitos and more alongside its menu of small plates for $37.22 per person (also noteworthy: Its Arlington counterpart will offer bottomless brunch for $32.22 per person). Because it’s a combination restaurant and art gallery, you can also pick up a piece as a last-minute gift while you taste the restaurant’s spins on banh mi and Turkish flatbread. 400 Morse St. NE, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., $37.22 or $5-$21 per plate. To make a reservation: Visit its website or OpenTable .

The whimsical brunch menu at Irregardless offers trendy drinks like matcha martinis to accompany its spin on traditional American fare: Take, for example, the Schmancy Hot Pocket, a savory puff pastry stuffed with ham and mustard, or its ube yogurt parfait. Though its children’s menu will not be available for brunch, it serves kid-friendly staples like its brioche French toast topped with maple syrup and blueberries for those who believe simple is best. 502 H St. NE. 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. $7-$16. To make a reservation: Visit its Tock page .

If you’re a parent of a picky eater, Stellina Pizzeria’s crowd-pleasing personal pizzas and pasta plates are here to rescue your Mother’s Day brunch plans. Its expansive list of dishes, which range from simple cheese pizza to its Napulella (that’s pizza topped with anchovies, garlic, black olives and burrata), also includes panini, salads and various sides, and its similarly expansive wine, beer and cocktail list may prove useful, too. 399 Morse St. NE. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. $15-$18. To make a reservation: Visit its Resy page.

Brunch and a carousel

Glen Echo Park isn’t just a park: It’s also an art museum, a theater, a classroom, a dance studio, an aquarium — you get the idea. On Mother’s Day, kid-oriented production company the Puppet Co. is holding two ticketed productions of “Alice in Wonderland” at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Plus, the park’s art gallery will be open for self-guided tours. And how could any kid (or adult — we don’t judge) leave the park without a spin on the carousel, which opens for the season on April 27? Admission to the park is free. Tickets for stage productions cost $15 per person; the carousel costs $2 per ride or $5 for an all-day pass. glenechopark.org .

Californian brunch classics will be available at Summer House beginning at 8 a.m. on Mother’s Day for the early-rising mom in your life. Load up on favorites like its slate of fruit-topped waffles, personal pizzas and loaded breakfast burritos while you sip punny drinks (Passionfruit Project, anyone?) and the kids taste their quesadillas, pasta with meatballs or “breakfast for dinner” plate, all of which are about $8. 11825 Grand Park Ave., North Bethesda. 8 a.m. $6-$22. To make a reservation: Visit its OpenTable page .

As The Post’s food critic Tom Sietsema wrote in his Fall 2023 Dining Guide, Bete Ethiopian offers a high-quality meal in a cozy environment and without a hefty price tag. He recommends its colorful vegetable sampler and kitfo, which he describes as “Ethiopia’s salute to steak tartare,” for the moms who always crave more spice in their lives. 811 Roeder Rd., Silver Spring. Noon to 9 p.m. $13-$40. To make a reservation: Visit its website or call 301-588-2225.

If the mom in your life is partial to shellfish and swimming creatures, the Salt Line ’s Bethesda location is both accessible and beloved for its exhaustive and delicious menu. It offers a children’s menu for maximum convenience, plus its raw bar and seafood towers for more adventurous palates. 7284 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. $5-$32, though towers cost between $150 and $200 and many dishes are offered at market price. To make a reservation: Visit its OpenTable page .
