Inside a Dubai Sheikh's Private Menagerie

COLIN SIMPSON

I WAS standing in a narrow, fenced-in corridor next to an animal enclosure when two fully grown cheetahs came loping towards me. They looked magnificent – lean, long-legged and built for speed, their spotted fur sleek, with striking face patterns.

I held my breath as they moved nearer, not knowing what to expect. A moment later they had passed by, and I breathed again.

Gulf Arabs have a fondness for big cats and other exotic animals, and many sheiks collect them and keep them in vast private zoos standing on desert sand. Normally such places are strictly out of bounds, but I obtained special permission to visit one owned by a senior member of Dubai’s royal family. I was shown around by the wildlife experts who run it.

visit private zoo dubai

Cheetahs are a speciality at the centre, which participates in a captive breeding programme with similar outfits in a number of countries. There are many other animals, among them grey crowned cranes and other birds, and various types of deer and gazelle that wander across the sand.

There are also Arabian oryx, a type of antelope native to the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. After being hunted to extinction in the wild 50 years ago, the species was saved through a captive breeding programme. It was subsequently reintroduced in the wild, and became the first species to be upgraded to the “vulnerable” conservation category after being listed as extinct in the wild.

Arabia oryx

Zoos are a controversial subject, with some saying they should all be closed down, but the story of the oryx provides an argument for keeping them.

The oryx sports twin horns, and is thought to have contributed to the unicorn myth as from the side it can appear to have a single horn.

The sheikh’s zoo is on the desert outskirts of Dubai, surrounded by high walls to keep the animals in and curious passers-by out.

I visited a second zoo belonging to another member of the ruling family where I had a close-up look at cheetah cubs. The second one is in the heart of the city, next to a large mall and five-star hotel (it’s Dubai, after all). This sheikh has a vast palace in the grounds, and I was asked not to take photos of it out of respect for the family’s privacy. In fact the site is so large it was difficult to get a good look at the distant building anyway.

The collection included a giraffe, and in the years before developers swept through the district and threw up a host of tall buildings, its neck could be seen sticking up above the walls of the compound.

Deer

Entering this place was like turning up at a Disney wonderland. The policy is to let as many animals as possible wander freely through the grounds (obviously predators such as cheetahs have to be kept in enclosures to protect the rest). As I drove through the front entrance I was met by a delightful scene as small deer, exotic birds and many other species stood together on an area of grass. A huge tree with overhanging branches and foliage provided shade from the Dubai sun.

This centre, too, has a wide range of animals, including kangaroo, ostriches and various deer species. There is also a group of greater flamingo – known as a “pat” – and I was shown some unfeasibly cute chicks. A breeding programme to safeguard the endangered northern bald ibis was under way when I visited.

visit private zoo dubai

Both of these legitimate centres are well run by professional managers who are committed to conservation, and the animals are healthy and properly cared for. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about other unofficial private zoos, where big cats and other species suffer from neglect and mistreatment.

I visited one where a lion that had been declawed to make it less dangerous to its handlers. The pain from the procedure was clearly causing the animal considerable distress.

Declawed lion

Big cats are popular as pets in the Gulf states, and photos of young men showing off their cheetahs or tigers are all over the internet. Many show the animals sitting in the passenger seat of Ferraris and other expensive cars as their owners drive. One video shows five tigers – including white ones – on a beach close to the famous Burj Al Arab luxury hotel.

The private ownership of exotic wild animals has been outlawed in the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is part, but according to reports the trade has simply moved online.

A friend in Dubai found a dead ocelot abandoned in a dumpster on a street, and a vet told me of a collector whose cheetahs kept dying – four in less than a year. Not surprisingly, the Middle East exotic pet trade is putting wild populations in Africa under severe pressure.

So while the conservation work carried out at the legitimate sites is commendable, there is a dark side to Arabia’s love of exotic animals.

Cheetahs are particularly popular as they are the most easily domesticated. Collectors often buy them and other species when they are cubs, then find they can’t cope with their pets as they grow. Many do not know how to care for the animals, which often die as a result.

A friend in Dubai found a dead ocelot abandoned in a dumpster on a street, and a vet told me of a collector whose cheetahs kept dying – four in a single year. Not surprisingly, the Middle East exotic pet trade is putting wild populations in Africa under severe pressure.

What a beautiful collection of photos. So many amazing animals in one place. The long legged deer animal looked so interesting. I can’t imagine trying to train a cheetah! It sounds like they are easy to train but wow, I can’t even imagine!

Cassie

Oh my gosh that baby flamingo! I am glad the places you visited were well managed.

Vee

Okay, I’m not a huge fan of Zoos in general, but I do think that you were able to get so close to the animals that these are some really cool photos, and I bet, nice memories.

Call of the Jungle: Inside Al Buqaish Jungle Private Zoo

Stroking a lion’s mane or playing with tiger cubs? Pick up a funny little monkey or feed a Madagascar lemur? Look into the clever eyes of a real Canadian wolf or take a close-up photo of an inseparable pair of pink flamingos? Al Buqaish Private Zoo, a private animal welfare project, recently opened its doors.

Al Buqaish Private Zoo is located in the desert, an hour’s drive from Dubai. Emirati standards are already felt at the entrance – carved wooden gates, palm trees, beautiful fountains, a green, neatly trimmed lawn, aristocratic walking peacocks, pink flamingos, and funny Australian mars (Patagonian bunnies). But that’s not all. Passing further, you meet Simba, a white lion lying peacefully on the lawn, and two little tiger cubs are walking nearby. Someone hand-feeds a one-year-old brown bear cub Baloo from Russia. It seems that you have come to visit a very rich and very animal-loving person. The way it is.

Of course, all animals have their own spacious enclosures, which are divided into two rooms: one open, the other air-conditioned. Inside the cells, there are even their own small ponds, and from above, thanks to a special device, it can rain in hot weather. But most of the time they spend outside the cages, walking along with the lawns and green areas of the zoo. The territory has its own spacious pool, where they can take turns swimming.

Each animal, be it a lion, a tiger, a wolf, a bear, hyenas, a monkey, or even a huge yellow python, has its own caretakers who walk them, keep them on a leash and stay with them all the time if there are visitors to the zoo.

Moreover, the tiger caretaker cannot enter the lion’s cage – this is how it is done here. The animal gets used to exactly one trainer and accepts only him. But these rules, of course, do not apply to the founders of the zoo – Humayd and his partner Nurredin. All animals, without exception, are ready to throw themselves on their necks, hug, kiss, and cuddle, as loving and devoted animals can do.

Sami Humayd and Nurredin do not like their “children” and sometimes even take them out to sea on yachts or just take a walk outside the zoo. When asked how they train wild animals, Nurredin answers without hesitation: “With the help of love. It’s enough”. Nurredin, by the way, together with his wife Camilla, lives most of the time on the territory of the zoo in a specially built house and spends with his pets almost all the time – both day and night.

READ :   10 Amazing Facts You Need to Know

For example, when, for the sake of salvation, a young lioness, Maya, was brought here, who was very alarmed and could not find a place for herself, Nurredin went into her cage at night and slept next to her. So little by little, she began to get used to the new environment, realizing that nothing threatened her here and that she was protected. When animals feel that they are under reliable protection, their love for you increases many times over.

They begin to perceive their masters, who feed them, play with them, and care for them as their parents. This is how the very deep contact that lasts all life arises. Animals are smart and understand everything. And they can attack only if they feel a threat that comes from a person.

At the dawn of the zoo, in 2015, Humayd and Nurredin had no idea that they would open it to the general public. This place was developed on their own initiative in order to save wild animals, which were abandoned by the former owners.

They usually did not even know about the previous life of the discarded animals – they just called and asked to pick them up. Nurredin still cannot tell how the black Canadian wolf or the one-year-old grizzly bear ended up in the Emirates.

Unfortunately, this still happens quite often in the countries of the Middle East. Lovely animals, similar in childhood to affectionate kittens, grow up to be large, strong, and sometimes difficult to control individuals, and the owners try to get rid of them. Nurredin and Humayd brought such refuseniks here, nursed them at their own expense, adapted them, gave them a new well-fed life, and surrounded them with care.

One of the main rules of Al Buqaish Private Zoo is that sedation is never applied to animals (a means to calm the nervous system and slow down reactions), they do not cut off their claws and do not file their teeth. Even though almost all animals grew up with people, do not know how to hunt, and do not know what life in the wild is, their strength is naturally great. Therefore, contact with them requires a certain skill.

In Al Buqaish Zoo, you can pet a lion, play with tiger cubs and a monkey, hand feed a Madagascar lemur, watch rare white kangaroos or a graceful python, or even put it on your neck.

READ:  Cheap Hotels in Dubai: Where to Stay for the Budget Tourist

The goal is a closer acquaintance with wild animals, an understanding of their behavior, and, last but not least, direct communication with them. Many people from other countries, already knowing about Al Buqaish Private Zoo, especially come to this zoo, and not once. Getting acquainted with tame tigers or lions, people get used to them and want to communicate with them again. In addition, each time the fear of large animals decreases, you understand their behavior, and communication becomes even more interesting. Animals also remember you and next time they can remember and show their good nature.

Lions and tigers, despite their power and strength, think that we are equal to them, therefore, the manifestation of affection or playful behavior by them may seem to a person almost an attack. Animals love to play but do not know how or do not know how to calculate their strength when playing with people. Therefore, to fully communicate with them, you need a certain skill.

For example, the one-year-old lion Simba weighs 130 kilograms, and when, as in childhood, he wants to climb on Nurredin’s knees, he has to stop him. Moreover, all lions and tigers, like any cats, simply adore affection, kisses, and hugs.

Such communication between man and animals is always therapy. After a few hours away from the city, in nature, in the company of such different animals, you feel the fullness of life and gratitude. You can come to this zoo with a family or a company, after talking with animals, arrange a barbecue on a separate lawn, and soon it will be possible to stay here overnight – guest chalets will open during this year.

Picking the best zoo in UAE is solely a matter of choice. While the bigger zoos are increasingly popular among the masses for the myriad of activities and interactions they offer, the smaller ones bring unique animal experiences that win the crowds over. However, if we had to pick one, it would be the Al Ain Zoo, which allows visitors the unique experience of witnessing endangered animal species up close.

HOW MANY ZOOS ARE THERE IN THE UAE?

There are six zoos in the country open to the general public. Other than that, there are a handful of private zoos here as well. Entry to a private zoo in the UAE is solely at the discretion of the facility’s owner(s).

For those of you interested in magnificent birds, the Kalba Bird of Prey Centre is a great attraction in Sharjah.

With that, we wrap up this post on zoos in Dubai. For animal lovers in the UAE, there are a bunch of other attractions that may not be categorised as a “zoo,” but still offer some remarkable wildlife experiences.

Visit the Green Planet in Dubai for a walk through an indoor rainforest and meet with the species native to it or head over to the Mangrove Lagoon National Park in Abu Dhabi to witness the thriving mangrove ecosystem and its inhabitants.  Mangrove Forest in Dubai is a spot that the public will be able to visit soon.
