HOW TO GET ST BARTS (PLANE AND BOAT)

Table of contents.

When you first touch down on the European-Caribbean island, with its deep blue waters and white sand beaches , it’s hard not to think of pirates. But there is more than just adventure in this small French territory; Saint Barthélemy also has a history as an international hub for trade.

From days of yore when sailors arrived on merchant ships or large schooners, to today when ferries and private mega yachts dock in Gustavia, or by way of the spectacular landing over the Col de la Tourmente onto the once grass-covered runway, the memories of that first sighting of the island are unforgettable.

What airport do you fly into to get to St Barts?

Today, many visitors to Saint Barthélemy arrive at the tiny but modern Gustav III / Rémy de Haenen Airport (SBH), complete with creature comforts: air-conditioned waiting room, boutiques, and snack bar. The airport is barely a gate between the plane and St Barts’ private villas .

Landing onto the tiny St Barths airport strip is such an experience that there are plenty of great videos on Youtube to (re)live it. I have selected my favorite ones and sorted them out for you on the SaintBarth.com YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/Saintbarthcom

HOW TO GET TO ST BARTS: IMMIGRATION

Most visitors to St Barts are either from the US, Canada, the European Union, the UK, or the Schengen Area. These people do not need any visa for a stay under 90 days, just a valid passport.

Citizens of some countries are required to have a visa to enter St Barths.

While France is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, France’s overseas departments and territories, like St Barths, are not part of the Schengen area and apply their own visa policies.

  • Citizens of the European Union and Schengen Area (Monaco, Andorra, Norway, Iceland, San Marino, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland): No Visa. Must have valid passports.
  • Citizens of the United States, Canada, and the UK must have a valid passport as well as a return ticket or proof of continuation of travel. The passport must be valid for more than 3 months from the date of entry to Saint Barth. No other visa or paperwork is necessary for a stay of less than or equal to 90 days.
  • No visa either for citizens from Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (biometric passport), Brazil , Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova (biometric passport), Montenegro (biometric passport), New Zealand, Nicaragua, North Macedonia, Panama, Paraguay, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (passport bearing identity card number), United States, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela
  • Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport and a tourist visa provided by the French Embassy or Consulate closest to their home. Entry to St Barths is checked very, very thoroughly.

My tip: Tourists from these countries must make sure that the French Consulate delivers them not only a Schengen Visa but also the extension for either “Départements d’Outre-Mer” (i.e. French Overseas Territories) or D.F.A. (Départements Français d’Amérique – French territories in the Americas) specifically mentioning St Barths (and St Martin for the transit). I had a Columbian friend forced to leave St  Barths by the first plane because the French Consulate made a mistake and he did not have the  St Barths mention in his visa. Do not make that mistake!

If you are bringing along a nanny or personal staff, make sure that you check whether they need a Schengen visa with the D.F.A. and Saint Barthélemy extensions. Otherwise, they will not be able to enter the island.

Do you need help figuring out whether you need a visa? Then use this official online tool made by the French government. In the “Main Destination” field, make sure to choose “Saint Barthélemy”.

HOW TO GET TO ST BARTS: BY PLANE

The runway at the airport in Saint Barthélemy may be small but it’s got a lot of personality. The 2,100-foot long airstrip (not to mention its location on an island) means that flights are limited mainly to smaller aircrafts such as propeller planes and helicopters.

Just 15 miles away, the neighboring island of Sint Maarten has an international airport – Princess Juliana (SXM) – from which it is easy to reach Saint Barth. Most international visitors will be transiting through SXM. If you are coming from Europe, especially France, you may be transiting through either Sint Maarten (SCM) or Guadeloupe (PTP, Pointe-À-Pitre ). Both airports have direct flights to Saint-Barthéemy. If you are coming from the US or Canada, another popular choice is using Tradewinds Aviation. The airline operates regular and charter flights from San Juan (SJU, Puerto Rico), St Croix, St Thomas, and Anguilla.

Note that our neighbor island of Sint Maarten / Saint Martin has 2 airports flying out to St Barths:

  • Juliana Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side of the island, where flights from the US land. This is the connecting airport for most people
  • Grand Case Airport (SFG) on the French side of the island. You may need to use this airport if flights to SXM are full. Then, it will be a 30-minute taxi ride to SXM or direct flights to SBH with St Barth Commuter before dawn.

To save money or because your plane may arrive late in the afternoon, you may also want to catch the ferry from St Martin to St Barths (see below).

Top airline routes from Saint Barths (SBH):

This is the 2020 average number of flights per week. In the high season (e.g. December), rotations are much higher than in the low season (e.g. June). Most private charter flights are not included here.

  • Sint Maarten Juliana (SXM): 228 flights/week
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU): 72 flights/week
  • Pointe-À-Pitre, Guadeloupe (PTP): 49 flights/week
  • Saint Martin Grand Case (SFG): 29 flights/week
  • Antigua (ANU): 19 flights/week
  • St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT): 1 flights/week

HOW TO GO TO ST BARTHS: BY FERRY & BOAT

Imagine arriving in Saint Barthélemy by ferry! From the French side of St Martin, Dutch Sint Maarten or Anguilla there are ferries as well charter companies that run regular connections to this beautiful island. For an even more luxurious experience be whisked away from the St Maarten airport or Grand Case on a private charter where you can travel comfortably across the turquoise waters and enjoy your stay with ease.

There are two ferry services to get to St Barts:

Voyager http://www.voy12.com  (daily scheduled service)

Great Bay Expres s http://www.greatbayferry.com/   (daily scheduled service in high season)

My tip: I prefer the Voyager III boat, as it is more comfortable. When traveling from St Martin to St Barts, the sea currents are tougher than on the way back. I’ve never been sick, but I always take a pill again seasickness 20 minutes before leaving St Martin. I also sit either inside, in the middle of the boat, (more stable), or at the back outside for some fresh air. I never book “business class”: I got upgraded once as the ferry was empty, it is more comfortable, but also a small room for my taste.

Also, book online and in advance, as it will be cheaper. Finally, always stop by at the ferry booth the day before leaving, just to make sure that your ferry will be leaving at the expected time and sail to the expected part of St Martin. You’d be surprised, but things sometimes change without much notice. Also, always make sure that you are buying a ferry ticket to the right side in St Martin where you actually want to go 😉

For those who prefer starting their vacations in a fabulous way, here’s how to get to Saint Barthélemy by speedboat: local companies will meet you when you arrive at Juliana Airport and whisk you aboard the boat for an incredible ride across turquoise waves.

Don’t forget to book a private transport from the airport to the ferry so they wait for you with a sign with your name at the airport exit on your arrival instead of having to negotiate rates or be offer a taxi on your exit to the airport.

The unpretentious, chic Island draws potential inhabitants from all over the world to experience its unparalleled security, privacy, and fine dining possibilities with a wide range of activities for every type of traveler. It’s no wonder people love it so much!

St Barts is an island of pure luxury, and anyone with a European Union passport can live and work here . US citizens without visas have up to 90 days on the Island before they must leave as tourists — but that doesn’t mean you need one in order for a visit! You can also buy property there: St Barts has n o restrictions against foreign buyers .

So, it easier for EU citizens to move to St Barths, but it does not prevent Americans from living on the island for long stretches. The US community is active, with a lot of people making friends on the island. As St Barts’ economy relies on tourism, non-EU citizens can also find work through hotels and villa agencie s, but they usually need to have qualifying skills.

The island has a sizeable population of Portuguese people, who have as construction workers and married into local St Barth families.

St Barth is a small island with its own unique set of rules and regulations. To become a resident here, you need to live on the island for over 6 months per year, for 5 years, before applying through the  Hôtel de la Collectivité  (local authorities) office. Once living in this quaint Caribbean community as an official citizen you will enjoy many tax benefits including not paying any income taxes!

The biggest problem with moving to St Barts is finding lodging to live in. Rents are extremely high, as apartment owners can easily arbitrage between tourists and residents. Private villas are often subdivided among tenants.

How long is the ferry from St Martin to St Barths?

From the Dutch side of St Martin, the ferry takes 45 minutes. From the French side, it is closer to one hour.

How do I get from San Juan to St Barts?

From the U.S., San Juan (Puerto Rico) is considered a domestic flight. US passengers bypass the hassle of immigration and customs and can connect straight to their flight. Tradewind Aviation offers direct flights (either scheduled flights or private charters) that go directly from San Juan to St Barts. It is a 1-hour flight. It is also possible to go from San Juan to St Barts by connecting through St Maarten airport, but the flight time increased to more than 2 hours.

Who does St Barth Commuter belong to?

St Barth Commuter offers scheduled and private charter flights to St Barts airport. St Barth Commuter was founded by Bruno Magras and Michel Martinon. They believed that the Caribbean island of St Barts deserved its own airline. They began operations in 1995 and have since transported more than half a million passengers from all over the world to this beautiful destination. St Barth Commuter has nonstop flights between St Maarten airport (Princess Juliana International Airport) and St Barts airport, between St-Martin Grand Case and St Barts airport, as well as between Guadeloupe and St Barts airport.

Boasting uncrowded beaches, world-class restaurants, designer boutiques and spectacular scenerey, it's no wonder Saint Barthélemy - or as it's more commonly known St Barths - is considered by many as the Jewel of the Caribbean . Blending casual chic French culture, unique Caribbean charm, and a few celebrities... this tropical paradise is only 45 minutes* away from the hustle and bustle of St Maarten/St Martin.

St Barts / St Barths

The small volcanic island of St Barths lies approximately 22 miles (35km) southeast of St Martin and is one of four northern Caribbean territories that makes up the French West Indies. Considered one of the Caribbean's most elite/expensive islands, St Barts has long been a favourite of the rich and famous, attracting many a celebrity to its shores.

This shallow reef-encircled island may be small but it packs a lot into its 8 sq. miles (21km²). Spend the morning on one of the 22 picture-perfect beaches, where sun-bathing and watersports are the order of the day, have lunch at a waterfront cafe and then browse the chic gingerbread-trimmed boutiques of the capital Gustavia - a perfect day trip to St Barths. For those staying on St Barth, watching the sun set over the mega-yacht filled harbour should be followed by an elegant evening meal at one of the many excellent restaurants. Be prepared to splurge a little, as budget options are few and far between. See our St Barts Travel Guide for an idea of the best things to enjoy on Saint Barthélemy.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-29 06:51

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

How do I get from Moscow airports to the city center?

voyager ferry sbh

Moscow with its more than twelve million inhabitants has three international airports. The best known is Sheremetyevo (international abbreviation SVO), which is 35 km northwest of Red Square. Russia’s largest airline Aeroflot has its hub here. The second largest airport, Domodedovo (international abbreviation DME), is about 45 km south-east of the center, from where the S7 airline, which mainly flies within Russia, and numerous international airlines such as Lufthansa take off and land. Finally, there is the third largest airport called Moscow-Wnukovo (abbreviation VKO), which serves numerous low-cost airlines such as Pobeda and is the closest to Moscow city center at just under 30 km.

Aeroexpress to the city center

First the good news – all three airports are easy to reach, both by taxi and by public transport such as train and bus. All three airports are connected to the Moscow city center by means of the so-called Aeroexpress. The Aeroexpress is certainly the most popular and the easiest way for foreigners to get to the center of Moscow. With the striking red signs Aeroexpress, you can find the way to the express trains both at Moscow’s three major airports and at the respective departure stations.

The modern, wifi-equipped trains from the private provider have little in common with the city railway trains from the Russian capital, which still originate from the Soviet era, and run to all three airports from early morning until after midnight. The schedule varies from airport to airport and time of day. As a rule of thumb, trains go to Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo every half an hour during the day to and from the airport, while Wnukowo is only served hourly for much of the day.

The same pricing scheme applies to all three airports: at 300 rubles (around $ 4.50) for a one-way trip, the prices for the trip are significantly more expensive than regular public transport tickets in Moscow, but are still affordable. Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo are each around 35 minutes from the center, and Domodedovo Airport is 45 minutes away.

voyager ferry sbh

If you buy the ticket in advance or via the app, there is a 50 ruble discount, further discounts are available if you book a return trip with one ticket, which costs 600 rubles (around $ 8.50). When it comes to value for money, the Aeroexpress trains are certainly the best option as a solo traveler. Especially since bypassing the often treacherous Moscow traffic – in the rush hour a drive by car can take an hour longer than previously estimated.

The biggest disadvantage is that you can of course not go directly to the desired destination within Moscow. However, all three Aeroexpress trains take you to one of the major Moscow train stations, which in turn are connected to the ring line of the Moscow Metro, from where you can quickly reach all corners of the center of Moscow.

Transport connections

  • Sheremetyevo Airport -> Belorussky Vokzal (journey time 35 minutes)
  • Domodedovo -> Paveletsky Vokzal (journey time 45 minutes)
  • Wnukowo -> Kiewsky Vokzal (travel time 35 minutes)

Prices (apply to all three airports in the city and to the airport):

  • One-way ticket at the counter = 300 rubles
  • Online ticket = 300 rubles
  • Round trip = 600 rubles
  • Tickets for 10 trips = 2,300 rubles
  • Ticket Business Class = 800 rubles

In the city or to the airport by taxi app

Alternatively, the transport from and to the airport can also be regulated using the taxi app. Yandex-Taxi and Gett are the two most popular providers in Moscow. At Yandex the flat rate to all three international airports currently costs 1100 rubles ($ 16) and at Gett even only 950 rubles ($ 14) in the cheapest variant, with a small car of the size VW Polo or Ford Focus.

Unless you want to go to the airport with too much luggage or with more than two people, this is certainly the easiest method. Moderate surcharges are required for larger vehicle categories. Without knowledge of Russian, however, it would be much easier to get to the airport by taxi app than from the airport to the city. Due to the confusing location in front of the three major airports, it may be necessary to contact the driver by phone to find the right vehicle. Because the GPS signal of the respective app only gives the location with an accuracy of about ten to fifteen meters – with several lanes running side by side in front of the terminal and dozens of waiting passengers and arriving taxis, it is certainly not always easy to find yourself straight away.

If you are still dependent on the WiFi of the airport building and therefore must not move too far from the entrance, the whole thing could prove to be difficult. From the city to the airport, however, the taxi app without knowledge of Russian proves to be the much easier method. The hotel or AirBnB address can be entered as the pick-up location, and a taxi can usually be ordered within a few minutes.

Moscow trip planned? Here you can find out how to get the necessary visa! !

With the classic taxi into the city

If you want to drive into the city by regular taxi, you have to expect considerable additional costs. The website of Domodedovo airport gives 2,000 rubles as a guide for a trip to the center, i.e. just $ 28. Trips to and from Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo should be a little cheaper. As with the taxi apps, the following also applies here: Especially at rush hour, you should probably prefer the train because Moscow’s streets burst at the seams in the after-hours traffic.

Bus metro combination

For experienced travelers to Russia or visitors with a particularly tight budget, there is still the option of all three airports to get to the nearest metro station by bus or Marshrutka (mini-bus with a fixed route but flexible stops).

From Vnukowo, for example, the 45M minibus line goes to the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station on the red line № 1 of the Moscow Metro, for just 150 rubles. Together with the 62 rubles ticket for the metro, you can get into the city for just over $ 3.

Sheremetyevo Airport can be reached from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station on Marshrutka line 949 for 80 rubles, or from Planernaya metro station with Marshrutka 948 for 80 rubles ($ 1.1). The minibuses run approximately every 15 minutes. Domodedovo Airport is connected by express bus to the metro station of the same name every half hour. The fare here is 150 rubles (a good 2,1 $). However, complications must be expected with this transport route – the bus drivers in Moscow usually only speak Russian. Taking the metro or minibuses with luggage is not always comfortable. However, you can save money, especially as a solo traveler.
