Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

Launched in 2016, the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam is one of Holland America's newer ships and the first in the more contemporary Pinnacle Class. Passengers can participate in everything from cooking classes to duty-free shopping, or simply relax by the pool or at the spa.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Koningsdam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Guests can spend their evenings playing casino games or watching stage shows and musical acts through a partnership with "Rolling Stone" magazine. While the ship does offer youth clubs for children ages 3 to 17, most of the entertainment and activities are geared toward adults.

When hunger strikes, passengers can choose between 11 dining venues, ranging from the casual New York Pizza & Deli to the more formal Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

The ship's cabin categories are also diverse. Staterooms range from Interior and Ocean View cabins to Verandah rooms and three Suite categories.

Koningsdam departs from ports like San Diego , Seattle ,  Vancouver  and Anchorage , Alaska, for sailings through Mexico, Hawaii , Alaska and California.

Carnival Miracle

Like other Carnival ships, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle boasts activities and entertainment geared toward travelers of all ages. Thanks to a renovation in 2020, the ship features upgrades like Guy's Burger Joint, WaterWorks, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Cantina and more. The ship also received a minor refresh to interior and exterior spaces in 2022. 

Even with the added venues, a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio ensures service is a priority. And compared to other Carnival ships, Miracle offers a higher percentage of cabins with ocean views. While Interior staterooms provide more wallet-friendly digs, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category cabins offer more space and scenery. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service.

During days at sea, grown-ups can enjoy poolside lounging or the adults-only Serenity Retreat, while kids ages 2 to 17 can play at age-specific programs.  There are also entertainment options like the Punchliner Comedy Club, the SkyBox Sports Bar and the Seuss at Sea program. Once the family works up an appetite, they'll have their pick of the main dining room, the Lido buffet, a specialty steakhouse (for an extra fee) and more.

Carnival Miracle departs from Galveston, Texas ;  Los Angeles  and  San Francisco  to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal,  Hawaii , Mexico , and Alaska . 

Crown Princess

Debuted in 2006 and last refurbished in April 2018, the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess features some megaship amenities like a casino, a kids clubs and a 300-square-foot poolside theater. The ship also features quiet nooks, like a library and the Sanctuary (an adults-only area that requires an extra fee). Updates for 2018 included new luxury beds in every room, new dining venues and an upgraded spa. 

Past cruisers were satisfied with the ship's relaxing atmosphere, describing public areas as pleasant and rarely overcrowded. Another main selling point for previous guests is the ship's versatile dining choices. Cruisers can choose from seven eateries, including the main dining room and three informal restaurants. For specialty dining, guests can choose between Italian at Sabatini's, or steak at Crown Grill or burgers at The Salty Dog Gastropub.

In terms of lodging, 80% of Crown Princess' exterior cabins feature private balconies. All staterooms are appointed with minifridges and satellite TVs, but guests who opt for Mini-Suite and Suite cabins can enjoy extra amenities like bathtubs, multiple TVs and 57-square-foot balconies. The Reserve Collection cabins feature all the amenities of Mini-Suites, plus access to an exclusive dining venue with expanded menu options, priority boarding and a complimentary one-time wine setup. What's more, each guest aboard Crown Princess now receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Pride of America

Refurbished in 2022, Pride of America is Norwegian's only ship that offers year-round sailings in Hawaii. As such, it is home to a hands-on learning center about the history of Hawaii. The ship also represents other famous USA sights with themed areas like the South Beach Pool (based on Miami Beach).

The ship caters to a diverse set of age groups; it offers youth-oriented programs for guests ages 3 to 17, as well as more adult-friendly pursuits like a golf driving net, the Mandara Spa and the Shuffles Card Room.

Pride of America's cabins also appeal to a wide range of travelers, from the Studio staterooms for solo travelers (which include exclusive access to the Studio Lounge) to Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite category cabins for groups. Pride of America offers 13 eateries ranging from the complimentary Aloha Café to Cagney's Steakhouse, one of seven specialty restaurants.

Pride of America carries up to 2,186 passengers and 927 crew members, maintaining a nearly 2-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio.

If you’re interested in cruising to the Hawaiian islands, then there are certain things to keep in mind for your trip. Cruises can be tricky to plan, especially considering the short days on land and the busy nights back on board.

Hawaii Cruise Facts

Before you head out to sea, there are a few important facts to keep in mind about your Hawaii cruise.

• According to the Passenger Vessel Service ACT (PVSA), foreign-flagged ships navigating between two US ports are required to stop at a foreign port like Canada or Mexico. You may also see this law come up as the Jones Act, but that only applies to cargo vessels and not passenger vessels like cruise ships.
• Currently, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is the only major cruise ship that qualifies for the PSVA, which is why it can embark and disembark in Hawaii without going to a foreign port. 
• A Hawaiian shirt is very different from an Aloha shirt! While Hawaiian shirts are brightly colored with unique patterns and prints, Aloha shirts feature a fish, Kapa, or floral pattern and the print is continuous with the chest pocket. They have a collar, button-up, and are worn untucked. Locals prefer muted colors.
• Gambling is illegal in Hawaii (they don’t even have a state lottery!), so don’t expect to find a casino on the islands. For this reason, cruise ship casinos do not operate while they are docked in Hawaii. And if you’re traveling on NCL’s Pride of America, you won’t find a casino on board at all! 

What to Pack for a Hawaii Cruise

Packing for a Hawaii cruise isn’t exceptionally different than packing for a Hawaiian vacation on land . But in addition to your clothes and accessories, there are some specific things that you should consider bringing.

• Mineral sunscreen : To help protect the reefs, Maui and the Big Island have banned chemical sunscreens, so make sure to pack mineral sunscreen. While the rule isn’t enforced on the other islands, it’s always a good idea to use mineral sunscreen and sun-protective clothing to protect the environment!
• Daypack or bag: Your time on land can be as long as 10-12 hours a day. We recommend a durable backpack or day bag to hold your towels, sunscreen, water, wallet, etc. If you forget something, you can always visit one of the many ABC stores (convenience stores) on the islands.
• Rainjacket: Tropical downpours can happen on any of the islands. Bring one on board, and don’t forget it during your shore excursions.
• Cash: Although Hawaii is mostly cashless, some businesses, like some food trucks, are cash-only.
• Extra money: To make the most of your time on land, we recommend booking shore excursions ( luaus , helicopter tours , circle island tours , etc.). However, these things can be expensive, so make sure you budget for these activities. We also have some tips to save money on shore excursions, which we’ll discuss a bit later.
• Hawaii cruise attire: Get into the aloha spirit with some festive gear, like an aloha shirt. You can find high-quality ones at Kahala or Reyn Spooner .

Hawaii Cruise Ports

Hawaiian cruise ships can travel and dock at four islands – Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Here is a list of the ports that may be included in your itinerary:

• Honolulu Pier 2 Cruise Terminal on Oahu (minutes from Waikiki Beach)
• Port of Hilo on the Big Island (Hilo, East Hawaii)
• Kailua Pier (tender port) in downtown Kailua-Kona, Big Island
• Kahului Harbor in north-central Maui
• Lahaina Harbor (tender port) in West Maui (currently not operational)
• Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai’s East Side, near Lihue Town.

You’ll find that most ship itineraries either embark or disembark on the mainland. However, NCL’s Pride of America is the only ship that starts and ends in Hawaii (Honolulu, Oahu, to be exact). We recommend coming to Oahu a few days early if you’re going on this cruise. Not only will this give you time to explore the island, but it can also help with jet lag.

Hawaii Cruise: Norwegian’s Pride of America

NCL’s Pride of America is the cruise line that stays in Hawaii. On top of that, it’s the only ship that operates year-round, so there’s a lot of flexibility in terms of dates. Their 8-day, 7-night Hawaii: Inter-Island cruise leaves and returns to Honolulu every Saturday. 

This is a great option for travelers who want to see four Hawaiian islands in a short amount of time. Here is the current itinerary as of 2024:

• Day 1: Embark in Honolulu, Oahu
• Day 2: Kahului, Maui
• Day 3: Kahului, Maui
• Day 4: Hilo, Hawaii
• Day 5: Kona, Hawaii
• Day 6: Nawiliwili, Kaui
• Day 7: Nawiliwili, Kaui
• Day 8: Disembark in Honolulu, Oahu

Compared to other luxurious cruise lines, the Pride of America may lack some of the extravagant features and amenities of high-end ships. But this cruise is designed to get you off the ship and for the price, it’s an excellent option to see the best of what Hawaii has to offer. 

The ship itself is in good condition, and the on-board food and entertainment are above average. There are over 20 different restaurants and bars, sports courts, kids’ and teens’ clubs, a spa, and tons of daily activities.

Another great perk is that they spend the night at the dock in Kahului and Nawiliwi, so you can do late-night or early-morning activities that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. But even if you head back to the ship, you have lots of time on land for shore excursions. This is, in our opinion, the most important factor to consider, as you’re taking this cruise to explore Hawaii after all! 

Popular Hawaii Cruises from the Mainland

Besides the Pride of America, there are plenty of other companies that cruise to Hawaii. Keep in mind that all of these ships leave from the mainland and spend several days crossing the Pacific Ocean. Sea days can be really fun, but they usually mean that itineraries will be longer than a week.

As we mentioned earlier, foreign-flagged ships going between two US ports will need to make a stop in a different country. That’s why you’ll see these ships docking or embarking/disembarking from Canada or Mexico. Remember that these are foreign countries, so US citizens will be required to travel with a passport.

The Best Time to Cruise Hawaii

Hawaii is a year-round destination, which means there’s not a bad time to visit. With that said, some times are better than others, especially if you’re going on a cruise.

The best time to cruise to Hawaii is in the fall , specifically in September and October. The shoulder season means fewer crowds and cheaper deals, although it’s still warm enough for beaches and outdoor activities.

Besides the Pride of America, which operates year-round, most cruise lines will only set sail at certain times of the year. Therefore, it’s important to plan in advance if you have specific dates in mind. 

How to Get Around for Shore Excursions

Once your ship has docked at the port, you’re free to roam around and explore the island at your leisure. If you’ve booked a shore excursion, transportation may be included to and from the dock. But this isn’t always the case, which means you’ll need to make your way to the meeting point on your own.

The tender port in Kailua-Kona (the Big Island) and the cruise terminal in Honolulu (Oahu) are the only two docks where there are sights and attractions within walking distance. While the Honolulu port is close to downtown Honolulu, it’s still a 15-minute drive from the center of Waikiki, so you’ll still need transportation or a guided tour if you want to see that area.

But for all the other ports, you’ll need to arrange transportation to get out of the industrial dock area. You’ll have several options to do so:

• Taxi and rideshare: Uber, Lyft, and local taxis can be called to pick up and drop off at the dock.
• Rental car: Renting a car allows you to see the island at your leisure. Some rental companies will pick you up at the dock. If not, then you’ll need to take a taxi or rideshare to the rental office or airport.
• Public transportation: While not the most convenient, public transportation is cheap and reliable. The Bus (Honolulu) has the most routes and frequent departures, and Oahu is the easiest island to get around without a car , while the other islands have buses that leave every hour.
• Guided tours: Many guided tours will pick you up at the dock to take you around the island for a few hours. It’s nice to have a local guide and not worry about driving. You can see our top picks for shore excursions in the next section.

Cruise Hawaii: The Best Shore Excursions

Planning an activity with limited time on land can be challenging. That’s why we highly recommend booking a shore excursion! Here are a couple of activities on each island that you won’t want to miss out on:

• Driving the Road to Hana
• Snorkeling Molokini Crater
• Be on the summit of Haleakala volcano at sunrise
• Whale watching during the winter months

Kaui: 

• Touring the Napali Coast by helicopter, airplane , hiking , or boat

Tips for Booking Shore Excursions

When it comes to booking an excursion, you have two options: booking through the ship or directly with the tour operator.

Here are the benefits of booking with the cruise ship: 

• Guaranteed return: Cruise-organized excursions are structured around the ship’s docking schedule, so you won’t have to worry about missing your departure time.
• Transportation: Transportation is usually included so there’s no need to hire a taxi or book private transportation services to and from the dock.
• Refunds: If your tour is canceled due to bad weather or inability to dock, you’ll get a refund from the cruise line.
• Booking options: You can book your excursion online or once you’re on the boat. Having this flexibility is great if you’re not sure of your cruise plans! Just note that popular excursions do fill up quickly and may not be available once you get on the ship.

And here are the reasons it makes sense to go with the tour operator:

• Support locals: When you book with a tour company, you’re supporting a local business and contributing to the growth of the community.
• Cost: In the majority of cases, the price of the excursion will be much lower than if you were to book with the cruise ship. 
• Availability: Excursions offered by the cruise line are limited, which means they tend to sell out fast. Going with a local company means more flexibility.
• Small groups: Local tour operators usually have smaller group sizes (up to 12 people) compared to ones operated by the cruise line.
• Cancellation policy: Many excursions have a generous cancellation policy in case your plans change, which can be anywhere from 24 to 72 hours.

Tips for DIY Shore Excursions

Getting off the ship can be chaotic, but here are some tips to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible:

• Try to disembark as early as possible. That way, you’ll be able to maximize your time on land.
• Get a rental car if you want to be flexible with your plans. Not only is this cheaper than taking a taxi or booking a tour, but it allows you to see more things at your own pace. Just remember to give yourself time to get to the airport or rental car office.
• Don’t try to cram too much in one day. The islands are big, and you don’t want to spend all your time driving. Instead, pick a few important things that are a priority to see.
• Not all tours have to be full-day excursions! You can book short-duration tours (farm tours are great!) if you want more flexibility.
• Some parks and beaches require advanced reservations, so do your research beforehand!

Beaches Near the Cruise Ship Docks

As we mentioned earlier, many of the cruise ship ports are in industrial areas. While most of the nice beaches are further away, there are some that you can visit if you want to stay near the docks.

• Honolulu: Ala Moana Beach Park
• Kauai: Kalapaki Beach (Nawiliwili Harbor). While you’re here, you can also pick up banana bread from The Jammin Banana and head to Duke’s for lunch.
• Maui: Ho’okipa Beach is just a short Uber ride away past Paia. It’s famous for windsurfing and green sea turtles on the beach!
• Big Island: Kamakahonu Beach (Kona-Kailua Pier, where the tender drops passengers off). It’s a pretty cove but can be busy during port days.
• Big Island: Reeds Bay Beach Park (Hilo). It’s near the harbor, but it’s not the best beach on the island due to Hilo’s wet, rainforest climate.

10 best Hawaii cruise tips for getting the most from your island-hopping trip

A Hawaii cruise solves one of the major hassles of island-hopping in the 50th state: Packing and unpacking as you take multiple inter-island flights in a bid to experience Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) in a single vacation. Most Hawaii cruise itineraries visit all four of the main islands and offer full days — and, in some cases, overnights — in port, so there's ample time for sightseeing and learning about Hawaiian culture.

On the other hand, compared with a weeklong, land-based visit to just one or two islands, you might find yourself hard-pressed to fit in everything you want to do in each port of call. You need to make sure your cruise ship and itinerary help you reach your vacation goals — not hinder them.

Here are my top 10 Hawaii cruise tips to help you make the most of your sailing and your time in the islands.

Choose your cruise based on your love (or loathing) for sea days

There are several ways to cruise the Hawaiian Islands and the itinerary you choose depends on factors such as the amount of vacation time you have, whether you want to fly to Honolulu, your openness to spending up to 10 days at sea and the time of year you want to sail.

If you love the actual "cruising" part of cruising, many of the major lines offer round-trip sailings from West Coast ports on itineraries lasting two weeks or more. This means you'll spend extensive time on board your ship as you cross the Pacific Ocean, but only four or five days in port in the Hawaiian Islands. Lines such as Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , Holland America and Viking offer 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings to Hawaii, usually in the winter months.

If you'd rather spend the majority of your cruise visiting the islands and sightseeing, a seven-night itinerary that sails round-trip from Honolulu or between multiple islands is also an option. The most popular all-Hawaii cruise option is on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America, which sails round-trip from Honolulu year-round, departing and returning every Saturday.

On a much smaller scale, UnCruise Adventures offers inter-island sailings on the 36-guest Safari Explorer from November to April. The focus is on exploring the natural wonders of Hawaii via active, small-group land and water excursions, and itineraries include lesser-cruised islands such as Lanai and Molokai.

Avoid the holidays and summer months for fewer crowds

The busiest times to cruise the Hawaiian Islands are the last two weeks of December through March, plus July and August. Expect larger crowds as well as higher cruise fares and hotel rates if you travel during these periods.

Instead, choose a shoulder season sailing. May and November are excellent months to cruise the islands. The weather is ideal in May and the summer vacation rush has yet to start. November is also a month with fewer crowds and generally favorable weather. If you visit early enough in May or late enough in November (into early December), you may even catch sight of the humpback whales that winter here, especially in the waters around Maui.

Book a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay if embarking in Honolulu

If your cruise embarks and/or disembarks in Honolulu, you won't actually have much time to enjoy Oahu's sights and attractions unless you arrive a day or two early or add a night or two post-cruise. Extending your Hawaii vacation with a hotel stay can add to your relaxation, help you adjust to the time change and allow you to fully enjoy much of what Hawaii's most populous island has to offer, from Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor to the scenic North Shore.

If you're truly strapped for vacation time, a round-trip Honolulu itinerary can efficiently deliver a four-island experience and let you see a bit of Oahu with a disembarkation-day excursion that combines a Pearl Harbor or North Shore tour with an airport drop-off.

Plan your sightseeing in advance

Unlike some ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Hawaii isn't a destination where it's easy to just walk off the ship and explore on foot. The ports in Honolulu, Kahului (Maui), Nawiliwili (Kauai) and Hilo (island of Hawaii) aren't located near top sights, while Kona, also on Hawaii, is a tender port where ships anchor offshore and ferry passengers in tender boats to a dock, although some shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

The solution? Once you've booked your Hawaii cruise, do some research and decide what you want to see — and what the best way is to do that. Your strategy can include a combination of shore excursions booked via the ship or arranged independently and exploration in a rental car.

For example, if your cruise overnights on Maui, you may want to explore the island on your own in a rental car the first day, visiting a beach, a resort area or Upcountry and the summit of Haleakala, and then book a snorkel trip or a ship's shore excursion along the Road to Hana for the second day when you'll need to be back on board in time for sail away.

Kauai is easily explored on your own via car, whether you're heading into the Waimea Canyon to go hiking or seeking out the perfect beach. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just 45 minutes from Hilo on the Island of Hawaii, meaning you can drive there yourself and visit more areas, including Chain of Craters Road, than on standard cruise ship shore excursions.

Choose a convenient rental car pick-up location

Opting for the rental car route can also be quite cost-effective, since the daily rate can be much less than the cost of two excursions and offer major savings for a family of four. Mixing your sightseeing up with independent exploration can also alleviate "tour bus burnout."

With a little pre-travel research, you can pinpoint the nearest rental car location to the port. Some rental car companies used to provide shuttles from certain locations to the port, but that is no longer the case.

For example, there's an Enterprise location that's an easy 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal in Kahului, Maui. The only downside is that the location is only open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so if you're renting on a day when you're overnighting in port and you want to keep the car to head to dinner or a luau, arrange to return it to the nearby Kahului Airport (OGG) location, where vehicles can be returned after hours; then take an Uber or taxi back to the ship.

On Kauai, there are multiple national rental car agencies at Lihue Airport (LIH), which is a five-minute drive (by taxi or Uber) from the port at Nawiliwili Harbor. The cruise port in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii is about 8 minutes' drive from Hilo International Airport (IHO), home to Avis, Enterprise, Thrifty, National and other agencies, while both Thrifty and Hertz have locations within walking distance of the tender pier in Kona.

Pack for both sun and rain

The Hawaiian Islands get lots of sunshine — 270 days on average annually — but rainfall is also frequently in the forecast. This is especially true from December through March and most notably on the windward sides of each island, which ironically are the most scenic areas known for their lush landscapes and cascading waterfalls.

This variability is important to remember when packing for your Hawaii cruise. Alongside those multiple bathing suits, cover-ups and sun hats, be sure to stash a travel umbrella and a lightweight rain jacket. The latter will also do double duty as a protective layer should you venture to the summit of Haleakala, where winds can be fierce and the elevation often drops temperatures into the 50s and 60s.

Don't forget to taste local specialties

Many cruise passengers fall into the trap of rushing back to their ship for lunch and dinner — why pay extra to dine in port, right? But if you always eat on board you'll miss out on Hawaii's unique culinary experiences. And most of them are quite affordable.

If you like sushi or ceviche, be sure to try poke, which is raw fish (most often ahi tuna) marinated with soy sauce, sesame oil and green onions and typically served in a bowl. Another popular midday option is the traditional Hawaiian plate lunch (or mixed plate), which consists of favorite Hawaiian foods such as loco moco (a hamburger patty topped with brown gravy and a fried egg), kalua pork (slow-cooked pork shoulder), lomi lomi salmon or even grilled Spam, served with scoops of white rice and macaroni salad.

If you opt to explore the North Shore of Oahu, a tasty lunchtime indulgence is locally farmed garlic shrimp served up by assorted "shrimp trucks" parked along the Kamehameha Highway.

For an afternoon cool down, have a shave ice, which as its name implies is a cone or cup of shaved iced drenched in sweet fruit syrup, or enjoy a few slices of ripe, freshly cut Hawaiian pineapple or other tropical fruit such as mango, lychee or sweet apple bananas. Other flavor-packed snacks not to miss are macadamia nuts and taro chips. Indulge in fat-laden carbs by trying malasadas, tasty Portuguese fried donuts.

Serious foodies should make time to sample the islands' signature Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Developed over the past three decades by a dozen top Hawaiian chefs that include Roy Yamaguchi ( Roy's ), Peter Merriman ( Merriman's ) and Beverly Gannon ( Hali'imaile General Store ), the movement focuses on local and sustainable ingredients that emphasize Hawaii's melting-pot culture and fusion of Polynesian, Asian and Portuguese flavors. If your ship is overnighting in Oahu or Maui, reserve a table in advance for dinner; Hali'imaile General Store on Maui is also open for lunch.

Seek out reef-safe sunscreen

Hawaii has been at the forefront in passing legislation to protect vulnerable coral reefs from bleaching and erosion caused by certain ingredients in sunscreen products. In early 2021, the state banned the sale of sunscreens containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, so look for the words "reef safe" on any sunscreen you purchase for use in Hawaii.

Using sunscreen in the islands is key if you want to prevent severe sunburn, which can happen quickly, especially in the middle part of the day. Hawaii's location (it is about 1,300 miles from the equator) means the sun's rays are more intense than they are in much of the mainland U.S. You'll also be spending the majority of your time outdoors, so as added protection it's a smart idea to also pack an SPF-rated swim shirt or rash guard to wear while enjoying water-based activities.

Prepare to hit the beach

All beaches in Hawaii are, by law, open to the public. That doesn't mean, however, that you can just head to a resort, select a lounger and act like you're a guest. Instead, there are public access points for popular resort beaches, such as Wailea and Kaanapali on Maui, Waikiki on Oahu and Poipu on Kauai. You'll be able to stake a spot on the sand, generally to either side of a resort's beach chairs — so bring along beach towels and/or pareos as well as water and snacks.

Don't overlook Hawaiian history and culture

It's certainly tempting to spend your time in port enjoying Hawaii's natural beauty and its myriad water-based activities, but be sure to take off your mask and snorkel from time to time and get to know the islands' unique history, language and culture. Opportunities to learn abound — and it's fun to be able to use a few key Hawaiian phrases while in the islands. In addition to aloha, which means hello and is used as a greeting, words you'll likely hear are mahalo (thank you), hale (house), kama'aina (local person), ohana (family), honu (turtle) and pupu (appetizer). But the most fun word to learn to pronounce is the 21-letter name of the Hawaiian state fish: humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

Cultural sites also give context to the Hawaiian way of life. When in Honolulu, you can delve deeper into the islands' natural history with a visit to the Bishop Museum or head to Iolani Palace to see how Hawaiian royalty lived in the late 19 th century before the U.S. annexed the islands. The Royal Hawaiian Center in the heart of Waikiki also offers free cultural programming that includes hula and ukulele lessons.

Choosing the right cruise line is crucial if you really want to enjoy your vacation .

In selecting the top 5 cruise lines for Hawaii, I’ve considered several factors:

In my opinion, and based on reviews, Norwegian Cruise Line is the best cruise line for visiting Hawaii. It specifically uses its Pride of America ship for this route .

The reason behind that choice is that NCL’s Pride of America is the only major cruise ship US-flagged .

This designation allows it to travel directly between U.S. ports without needing to stop in a foreign port.

In fact, according to the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886 , foreign-flagged cruise ships, which most major cruise lines are, must include a foreign port in their itinerary to comply with U.S. maritime law if they start and end in a U.S. port and visit other U.S. ports in between.

This is why cruises from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii often include stops in Canada or Mexico.

This requirement extends the length of the cruise and limits the time available to explore Hawaii for other cruise lines.

Other reasons why I love NCL? The Pride of America is not excessively big, it has a capacity of over 2,100 passengers , so you can really focus on the place you’re going to visit and not the ship itself.

Plus, NCL offers a freestyle type of cruising. You will have a lot of flexibility in choosing dining times, entertainment, and experiences.

Moreover, NCL is the only cruise line that offers year-round cruises exclusively within Hawaii , allowing guests to visit four islands in seven days without the need for inter-island flights.

This unique route offers a comprehensive Hawaiian experience, from Oahu to Kauai.

I have to admit that it costs a little more than others, and you have to fly to Honolulu, but it is absolutely worth it.

2. Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean offers an 8-night Hawaii Cruise departing from Honolulu with stops at several key destinations. I would consider that as the second-best choice for a cruise to Hawaii .

The thing that I really like about Royal Caribbean is the onboard experience , the entertainment , and the activities . Did you know that its ships have some of the biggest water slides on cruises ?

On every ship, I’ve always found a relaxing and family-friendly atmosphere. Moreover, RCI is known for its high standard of service.

The itineraries often include Hawaii among their destinations . These cruises often feature transpacific journeys that combine visits to the Hawaiian Islands with other Pacific locations.

I would say this is the perfect choice if you are planning a cruise to Hawaii with your family or with kids . If you are traveling with family don’t forget to include drinks packages !

Carnival Cruise Line offers Hawaii cruises from the West Coast on ships like Carnival Legend, Miracle, Radiance, and Spirit which are some of their smallest ships .

The itineraries are usually 14 days from Long Beach or 15 days from Seattle, San Francisco, or Los Angeles .

The thing that I like about Carnival is that it focuses on offering immersive Hawaiian cultural experiences and breathtaking natural sights .

Carnival itineraries to Hawaii often include extensive port calls so that guests can deeply explore the islands’ natural beauty, culture, and history. The only negative thing is that the line’s cruises to Hawaii are typically part of larger Pacific itineraries .

So it will not be a cruise focused exclusively on Hawaii islands.

What can I say about the quality and the services on their ships? Well, I’m pretty sure many of you already know or have already traveled with Carnival.

They are renowned for their premium service and attention to detail. The line prioritizes guest experience, offering personalized service that caters to individual preferences.

Like many of the other cruise lines we saw, this one also combines Hawaiian cruises with other Pacific destinations .

It offers a premium experience but the prices are also a bit higher if compared to the previous ones.

Moreover, this cruise line caters to a more mature audience , I wouldn’t recommend it for young couples or families with kids.

I just wanna briefly recap what we’ve seen to avoid confusion.

We have seen that for those looking to explore Hawaii by sea, five cruise lines offer very distinct experiences :

Norwegian Cruise Line stands out with its U.S.-flagged “Pride of America”, offering extensive Hawaiian island visits without requiring international stops.

I spent $2,000 for 7 nights in a 179-square-foot room on one of the world's largest cruise ships. Take a look inside my cabin.

• I booked a stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, one of the biggest cruise ships.
• For $2,000 a week, the 179-square-foot cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and a view.
• I thought I'd feel cramped in the room, but it had everything I needed and left no space unused.

In April 2022, I cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . At the time, it was the largest cruise ship in the world , but the title has since been replaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas .

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000. Take a look inside the 179-square-foot space.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms , which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony , and two steps below a suite.

My cabin was on the same deck as Central Park, an outdoor space with 20,000 plants.

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by.

When I stepped inside my stateroom, I was surprised at how big it felt.

Right away, I thought the cabin made great use of a small space.

To operate most of the electricity in the room, I had to insert my room key into a slot on the wall.

I appreciated the energy-saving system.

On one side of the room, I had a mirror and a desk with several outlets to charge electronics with USB, American, and European ports.

I thought the desk was useful for eating, as well as storing daily flyers about the day's events.

Next to the desk, a set of drawers included a cabinet with a minifridge inside.

The desk drawers were mostly empty aside from a hair dryer, which I didn't end up using.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

Inside each closet, I found a rack of hangers, shelving, and a small safe. I thought it was plenty of space for a weeklong journey

Next to the couch and desk area, a small bathroom used clever storage hacks, like placing the trash can and toilet paper under the counter.

In the bathroom, there were two glasses, a bar of soap, and a two-in-one hair and body wash.

At the top of the shower, a pullout clothing line was useful for drying my bathing suits.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

Sometimes, the towels were folded creatively to look like animals.

I noticed that my king-size bed at the back of the room was actually two twin beds pushed together.

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website , so they may be separated for additional guests. I often woke up in the crevice.

A large flat-screen TV was mounted across from the bed with storage hooks below.

Skinny nightstands on either side of the bed held lamps, charging ports, and a room phone on one side.

Because I booked an ocean-view room, I was able to look out over the front of the ship from a window above my bed.

The window was equipped with an electronic shade that could be opened during the day for grand views and closed when I was ready to sleep.

While I thought the room might have been a tight space for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family, it was just right for me.

And watching the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea from the comfort of my room was the best part.

Disney Cruise vs. Disney Aulani: Which Vacation is Right For Your Family?

Y ou’ve been to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Or maybe both! You are looking to take another Disney vacation but maybe with a bit of a twist to change it up this time. Most Disney-loving families turn next to a cruise vacation aboard Disney Cruise Line or a trip to Hawaii to Aulani, Disney’s resort on the island of O’ahu.

I hear a lot from friends and readers who aren’t sure whether Aulani or a Disney Cruise is the best next step in their Disney travels. I’ve had the good fortune to try both on multiple occasions over the years, experiencing them with my kids at different ages and stages.

Both are travel experiences I’d highly recommend. Although this post pits Aulani vs. Disney Cruise, there really isn’t a winner and loser here. Rather, one trip may simply be better suited to the ages of your kids or the way your family likes to travel. What I hope to do is point out those sweet spots where you are likely to get more out of doing one of these trips compared to the other.

But if budget allows and you have the interest, I sincerely hope Disney-loving families eventually do both!

Similarities Between Disney Cruise Line & Aulani

Before I dive into the differences between these two vacations, let’s start with the similarities. Disney Aulani (which opened in Ko Olina on O’ahu in 2011) was very much modeled after Disney Cruise Line (which launched in 1998). In fact, Aulani was designed to bring much of the Disney Cruise experience to land. So it’s not surprising that the two have a lot more in common than they have different.

Both are luxury-level (translation: expensive) Disney vacations. If you are used to doing Disney on the cheap by staying in a value resort or an inexpensive off-property hotel at Disney World or Disneyland, you probably aren’t going to be able to do that with either Aulani or Disney Cruise.

To be sure, there are certainly ways to reduce the costs of both Aulani and DCL. But be realistic about the total bill you are going to be facing with either of these vacations.

Both Disney Cruise Line and Aulani offer a vacation experience that is very different from the Disney parks. A trip to Disney World or Disneyland means a lot of walking and logistics navigating theme park lines day after day. You’ll find a totally different daily schedule on an Aulani or DCL vacation.

The footprint and scope of both Aulani and the Disney Cruise ships are smaller. There are no attractions to ride. You can plan much less if you prefer. If you want to spend a day lounging by a pool or visiting a spa, there’s time for that. In fact, that’s really the point of these vacations.

Of course, there’s amazing Disney service and lots of Disney entertainment and characters to experience if you wish. But there’s far less theme park rat race. (Although I can’t promise you won’t encounter crowds and lines in several situations!)

Disney Cruise Line vs. Disney Aulani: Key Differences to Consider

So now on to the differences that matter between these two kinds of vacations. What factors you should consider in picking which one is right for you?

Where Are You Located?

Location, location, location. For families with limited vacation times and sometimes limited patience with little ones on planes, minimizing travel time is often an important factor in making vacation decisions.

For fellow West Coast families, the logistics of getting to Hawaii can be quite simple. And they are even simpler and cheaper now that Southwest Airlines has been flying to Hawaii the last several years. I’m a California girl and can travel to Hawaii on an easy 5 hour flight. As a result, Aulani feels “close” to me.

For families in the Midwest or on the East Coast, however, visiting Aulani is more of a challenge. A Hawaii trip can require multiple plane connections, maybe a redeye flight, and some serious jet lag and time zone changes. That may not be how you want to spend vacation – especially with babies or toddlers. I get it.

The majority of Americans will be much closer to a Disney Cruise Line vacation than an Aulani one. In that case, Disney Cruise may be a smarter choice. DCL currently has five ships (the Disney Magic, the Disney Wonder, the Disney Dream, the Disney Fantasy, and the new Disney Wish). There are two more on the way (the Disney Treasure and a yet-to-be-named ship that will be Asia-based). Chances are one is stationed closer to you. Itineraries currently include the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, the West Coast of Mexico (Mexican Riviera), Australia, and several more.

Within just North America, cruises set sail out of Florida (Port Canaveral near Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale), Galveston, New Orleans, San Diego, Vancouver, and New York City. Indeed, even as close as Aulani is for me, DCL’s San Diego sailings are much closer!

How Flexible Is Your Travel Schedule?

Even though DCL sailings are closer geographically, there is one countervailing factor to consider. Cruise itineraries start and end only on specific days. As a result, it may be harder to find a DCL sailing that fits your ideal schedule constraints. This is especially true given the fact that most travelers fly in a day before a cruise starts to minimize the risk of a flight delay making them miss the ship.

We are encountering just this very challenge as we plan for our Thanksgiving travels. One of my kids doesn’t have the full week off of school this year. We found there simply isn’t a Disney cruise that we could travel to and sail on in the time allotted without having her miss at least one day of school.

In contrast, Aulani offers the ultimate in flexibility. Guests can arrive and depart on any day of the year at any time. This has meant we’ve been able to squeeze in a visit to Aulani even on a long weekend where a nearby cruise simply wouldn’t have aligned with the kids’ school holidays. So for travelers who need flexibility, Aulani may ultimately be the more flexible of the two.

Do You Want a More All-Inclusive Experience?

Many families prefer to take all-inclusive vacations. They can take a lot of the guess work out of budgeting. Others much prefer to pay a la carte for what they actually consume and value. (For what it’s worth, I’m pretty ambivalent personally about this choice. I usually find myself on a la carte vacations most of the time.)

If you are the type of traveler who values the all-inclusive model, Disney Cruise Line is much closer to an all-inclusive vacation than Aulani. Food and a number of on-board activities and entertainment options are included in the cost of a cruise. There are extras like many drinks, shore excursions, and tips to watch out for, but they are fewer and farther between.

Aulani, on the other hand, is much more like a standard resort vacation. You pay for the room, but all of the food and drinks are an additional expense. Aulani has number of free activities like the amazing pools, waterslides, lazy river, and beach (and kids club – more on that below). But most of the premium experiences cost extra, including an evening show, Aulani’s Ka Wa’a Luau . And as you might imagine, everything else is simply more expensive in Hawaii.

Does Anyone in Your Family Get Motion Sickness?

This may seem like a small consideration but it matters in a big way. There is a small portion of the population for whom cruising is just not a realistic vacation choice thanks to motion sickness or related health issues.

I have a friend who took her 8 year old on a Disney Cruise for the first time only to discover that his stomach was radically incompatible with cruising. He was terribly seasick on the ship for four days straight. In fact, they headed straight to the ER to rehydrate him after docking. He didn’t have any history of other types of motion sickness so this reaction was quite an unfortunate surprise.

It’s impossible to know for sure whether any of your family members will be affected by cruises until you take one. The vast majority of people who don’t already have known motion sickness or related problems will be fine on any cruise, especially with a little Dramamine or SeaBands for backup. I personally have vertigo and have no problems even on small ships in big waves, although my father with Meniere’s disease can no longer cruise. But if this worries you and you have not cruised before, I’d steer clear of a long open water DCL itinerary as your first trip. It’s not much of a vacation for anyone if even one member of the family feels poorly.

If you have someone with known motion sickness issues of any significance, a cruise may be a gamble you just don’t want to take.

Do You Have a Big Family or Need more Space?

If you have more than two kids, you are probably already used to the challenge of standard hotel rooms. Most of them are built for four – if that. Upgrading to larger accommodations or even booking two rooms brings major increased costs.

Big families will likely find that both Aulani and Disney Cruise Line present the usual challenges. As you can probably imagine, however, space is a little easier to come by on land than on sea. Larger suites and condos are ultimately a bit more readily available at Aulani.

Aulani has some more flexible options for larger families because of its abundance of Disney Vacation Club (DVC) villas ( Related : Find out how we rented at Aulani using DVC points and saved big  or rent from David’s Vacation Club Rentals yourself). One bedroom villas sleep up to 5 people. Families of 6 or more will need to upgrade to the two or three bedroom villas. To be sure, these premium rooms do not come cheap. But the villas have full kitchens and washer/dryers that make them very convenient and even cost-effective for larger families.

Disney Cruise Line does have some options that work for bigger families as well. DCL ships have a number of cabins that sleep 5. They are more limited in supply and may sell out before the rest of the cabins do, so early planning is required. And they are a tight squeeze even when you can find them.

Many larger families often opt to book two connecting cabins on Disney Cruise Line for more space. This limits the cabin types available to you depending on the ship, but can work well. And on cheaper itineraries like those in the Caribbean, this strategy often isn’t prohibitively expensive, although it can be to some destinations.

Do You Want or Need Childcare?

Both Disney Cruise ships and Disney’s Aulani Resort have complimentary kids clubs. (Truthfully, the clubs are built into the cost of the room/cabin. But I prefer to celebrate them as free.) While some of the DCL and Aulani childcare offerings used to be similar, that is not really the case anymore. It’s important to get up to speed on what the parameters are in 2023 to determine what will work best for your childcare needs.

Disney Cruise Line offers two connecting kids clubs, the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, included in the cruise cost. Kids ages 3-12 are permitted to visit as long as they are potty trained. No reservations are required, and I’ve never yet seen a club reach capacity. The clubs are open for long hours that give parents a lot of flexibility any time of the day.

All the DCL ships also have a nursery aboard in addition to the kids clubs. The nursery takes kids from 6 months old through age 3 (note that 3 year olds can do either the Oceaneer Club & Lab or the nursery). At $9 per hour, this childcare option isn’t free, but it’s a good value for what it offers.

Aulani has never had a nursery for babies and toddlers like Disney Cruise Line, but it does have a kids club called Aunty’s Beach House . Aunty’s used to operate much more like Disney Cruise Line’s clubs. Parents could drop kids off on a whim for any length of time. Unfortunately, it no longer works this way in 2023.

Aunty’s currently admits kids ages 4-12 only (it used to take 3 years olds too). Reservations are essential and book up weeks in advance online. Kids are limited to one free 90 minute pre-set session per day, at either 8am, 10am, or noon. Aunty’s also is not open in the evenings, so it’s not an option for parents who want to use it for an adults-only date night.

My kids adored Aunty’s in the pre-2020 times. You can probably sense my frustration at the current pared back state of affairs. If you need or want meaningful included childcare, Aulani’s offering doesn’t make the grade at the moment. If you simply want a break from the kids here and there and can plan ahead, it will suit just fine.

The bottom line? If you have a baby or toddler who is younger than 4, there is no Disney-operated childcare option for you at Aulani. And for kids 4-12, the options are more limited at Aulani than on Disney Cruise Line. If you are like my family and often use kids clubs, this difference between Aulani and DCL can be a crucial tie-breaker.

Do You Have Teens?

When I first published this post, my kids were still in elementary school, so I had no experience yet with the teenage point of view on Aulani and DCL. But I just recently took a Disney cruise with my daughter for her 14th birthday and we visited Aulani a few months before that. So I grilled her hard on what she thought about both experiences for teens.

Both offer a safe atmosphere where parents can let teens roam and explore independently. While Aulani will always be her first love, she thought Disney Cruise Line currently delivers far more for the teen set.

Disney Cruises simply have so much more for teens to do. They have an abundance of night time programming and exclusive tween/teen clubs, Edge and Vibe. At Aulani, there used to be some programming for teens before 2020, but it hasn’t returned to the schedule. In my experience, Aulani appears to be drawing more families with little ones in recent years than it did before, so there may not be the demand for it ever to return. On our last trip to Aulani, we had a lot of family bonding and fun together, but my daughter grew a little restless not having an organized way to meet kids her age.

That said, Aulani would still work well for teens on a vacation with extended family and friends and built-in socialization. But DCL is better when traveling with just your immediate family because it is easier for teens to make and meet friends on board.

The verdict? If you have an active teen who likes to socialize, the safer bet is DCL. Further reading from fellow travel bloggers who have done both vacations with teens too:

Do You Have a Passport?

As someone who has been lucky to travel internationally since I was a child, I sometimes forget that most Americans don’t have passports! At $130 per adult and $100 per child in 2023 (+ a $35 acceptance fees for new applicants), they are a big cost that can really add to a trip’s budget.

You obviously don’t need passports at all for an Aulani vacation (for the geographically challenged – yes, Hawaii is a US state). But passports are needed or at least highly advised for most Disney Cruise Line itineraries.

Technically, there are a few exceptions. You and/or your kids may be able to make do with a passport card (only $65) or ID and birth certificate if you are taking a closed loop cruise to many Caribbean countries, Canada or Mexico.

But I don’t recommend this approach at all. If your ship is diverted to a new port due to weather, you might not be able to get off. It’s also risky to travel internationally without a standard passport in the case of a medical or family emergency.

So, if you and your kids are not yet passport holders, definitely factor the cost of a passport into your Disney Cruise Line vacations as you make your travel decisions!

Do You Want to Do More than Disney?

One of the reasons many vacationers choose an Aulani or Disney Cruise Line vacation is that they offer so much more than Disney travel. They come with tried and true Disney service and amenities that families can trust to meet their travel needs. But they aren’t merely a theme park vacation. They are both much more focused on the destination.

It is certainly possible to do either of these vacations and stay entirely within the Disney bubble if you wish. You can go straight from Honolulu Airport to Aulani and never leave until it is time to go back to the airport. If you choose a DCL itinerary that doesn’t have many or any ports of call other than Castaway Cay (or if you don’t get off the ship!), you’ll have a mostly Disney-centric experience as well.

But it’s also possible to explore a lot more on either of these vacations. Aulani is a short skip and a hop away from Pearl Harbor. You can spend a day driving to the North Shore or visiting Waikiki Beach or hiking Diamond Head. You can even combine a few nights of an Aulani vacation with a stay elsewhere in the Hawaiian islands to both save money and see more sights.

And even if you do stay only within the resort, you’ll still learn plenty about the local culture. Disney has worked diligently to make Aulani authentically Hawaiian in its offerings. It’s more than just character meals and pixie dust.

With Disney Cruise Line you can quite literally see the world. Opt for a tropical vacation with a Caribbean or Mexican Riviera itinerary. Or you can explore culture and history in Europe or experience outdoor adventure in Alaska. The numerous options make a DCL trip even more of a destination-focused vacation that just happens to have magical Disney touches.

Frequently Asked Questions about Disney Cruises and Aulani

Still have questions about the Disney Cruise vs. Aulani debate? Here are a few more queries that may have crossed your mind.

Can I take a Disney Cruise TO Aulani?

If you want to have your cake and eat it too by taking a Disney Cruise that includes an Aulani vacation, is that possible? Not exactly.

As of 2023, Disney has added Hawaii to its cruising schedule, but only in a very limited fashion. One ship, the Disney Wonder, stops in Hawaii as it repositions from its summer Alaska itineraries down to Australia in the fall (and then as it returns to the West Coast in spring 2024).

The ship doesn’t stop at Aulani (and in fact, only the fall itinerary includes Honolulu). And these one way trips are 10 days each and quite pricey.

Conceivably, you could DIY an itinerary to do both DCL and Aulani, as follows:

• Depart on the Disney Wonder on October 3, 2023 from Vancouver to Hawaii.
• Debark the Disney Wonder on October 13, 2023 in Honolulu.
• Transfer to Aulani for a stay of several nights.

But realistically, this isn’t going to work for the vast majority of family travelers. Sorry to disappoint!

What costs more: a Disney cruise or an Aulani vacation?

As you can probably imagine, there is no definitive answer to this question. A lot depends on the date you would like to travel. And for cruises, the price can vary based on the destinations involved and the ship.

To help illustrate general costs, I priced out sample 4 night vacations for a family of four on the same dates. Since Aulani doesn’t include food like DCL, I budgeted $250 for a family per day. Believe it or note, this is a reasonable Hawaii food budget if you plan to eat out most dinners but also plan to get some groceries or grab and go food at other times.

For a trip right after Labor Day this year (September 4-8, 2023), here is what the least expensive room/cabin runs for each:

• Disney Magic 4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Miami (inside cabin): $3452
• Aulani $2242 (standard room with current 25% off fall discount) + $250/day food budget = $3242

Here’s another example for early next year (January 8-12, 2024) that includes higher end accommodations (a veranda cabin on Disney’s newest ship vs. a one bedroom villa at Aulani):

• Disney Wish 4-Night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral (veranda cabin): $5063
• Aulani $4100 (1 bedroom villa) + $250/day food budget = $5100

As you can see, the prices for Aulani and Disney Cruises are generally in the same ballpark. There are, however, some exceptions to this rule. For example, Disney Cruises to Alaska tend to be quite a bit more expensive than other cruise destinations. Disney Aulani also tends to run more published seasonal sales where you can sometimes snag a lower nightly room price if you are very flexible.

At Aulani, you can also book a shorter stay to save money. A lot of travelers on a budget who still want to experience Aulani may want to book a one or two night stay and spend additional nights at a more moderately priced hotel elsewhere on O’ahu. Disney Cruises in North America, in contrast, are a minimum of a three night price commitment.

And of course, you also have to consider airfare costs and other add-ons your family might want to experience when making the full cost comparison.

Aulani vs. Disney Cruise: The Final Word

Whatever you decide between Aulani or Disney Cruise Line, I’m fairly confident you will experience a memorable family vacation.

We have enjoyed our times immensely at each and plan to return to both. Aulani was probably a better fit for kids when they were preschoolers/grade school age and Disney Cruise is working a bit better now as our kids get into the teen years. But that could change as both DCL and Aulani make adjustments to their offerings.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

“This is your yacht, to do with as you please,” Captain Rob O’Leary said to guests of the Emerald Sakara , the second luxury superyacht from Emerald Cruises. “We have an international crew from 21 different nations, and we are all here for you.”

I was on the maiden voyage of the 360-foot Sakara, a December 2023 sailing with the added glamor of a Champagne christening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, led by the ship’s godmother Kelly Craighead. She is president of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade organization.

“Sakara” is a Sanskrit word meaning “thoughts become things” – a fitting name, given the thought that went into the ship’s chic design.  And our itinerary for the week couldn’t be more yacht-like – an island-hopping experience in the West Indies, stopping in out-of-the-way ports that larger cruise ships can’t manage. And while some smaller boats can feel rocky, the Sakara’s stabilizers keep the ship on an even keel.

Craighead said that small-ship cruises offer “luxury at a great value, access to hidden-gem ports and unique features like marinas for water activities directly off the ship,” she says. “These small ships can even be chartered, for your own amazing, private yacht experience.”

After departing from San Juan, the Sakara reached the Puerto Rican island of Culebra in a few hours, just 20 miles off the coast. We hopped in a taxi van at the port to reach the pristine waters of Flamenco Beach, which consistently makes the world’s top 10 lists. It was a fall-asleep-on-the-sand kind of day, under brightly colored umbrellas, with multiple trips to the canteen for French fries.

“I hope you enjoyed Culebra today because it’s quite hard to get in, through a very narrow channel,” O’Leary said at a supper-hour briefing. 

The next day, we stopped at the nearby island of Vieques, which is filled with wild horses – about 2,000 of them – most of whom are fully accustomed to the photo op. We docked at Esperanza Bay and wandered the waterfront. There were jeeps or ATVs available to rent for those who wanted to beach-hop, but we settled into the sand at Sun Bay. And when we sailed into Cruz Bay on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. John the following day, there were yachts and catamarans everywhere – and the Sakara fit right in.

The crew outdid itself the next day at White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A barbecue feast awaited us, along with beach loungers, steel-drum entertainment, and all the paddles and water toys from the ship. Later, we wandered down the beach to find a young yacht crowd, groups of friends who have rented their boats, all knee-deep in their mojitos.

“I get a real kick out of driving the Emerald Sakara into St. Barths, muscling in and anchoring next to all the other superyachts,” O’Leary said. “It looks good in the pictures.” A stop there brought a snorkeling excursion, a bit of high-end shopping and a few rosé-soaked hours on Plage de Saline.

Back on board, the creature comforts of the Sakara included plenty of outdoor space to connect with the ocean, a small infinity pool, a full-service spa and a large, elegant dining room and terrace. It’s all part of the cushy yacht lifestyle. 

The ship will spend the summer and fall cruising the Mediterranean Sea – heading for the French and Italian rivieras, Croatia and Greece – with eight-day itineraries from $5,100. The Emerald Sakara will be back in the Caribbean next December, with eight-day cruises starting at $4,100.
