Boarding the Largest Yacht in the World for a Rome to Venice Cruise with Windstar

Cruising into a new port every morning is an adventure that harks back to a more graceful time when travel took longer – and the journey itself was the destination.

After a day’s memorable sightseeing in Rome, I’ve joined Windstar Cruises’ flagship, the Wind Surf, at Civitavecchia port on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A swift check-in, and I’m already on the yacht’s Star Deck, enjoying a delicious buffet lunch at the Veranda restaurant. Officially the world’s largest sailing yacht, Wind Surf is gleaming white against a blue-blue sky in the hot Italian sunshine.

Her streamlined yachting outline and masts are reminiscent of a golden age in seafaring. She’s spacious with plenty of room for her 310 guests in 154 staterooms: 31 ocean-view suites, two bridge suites and 123 deluxe ocean-view staterooms.

Suite sailing My own spacious accommodation – suite 501 on the bridge deck – is at the front of the yacht with its own private hallway and entrance off the deck.

Picture windows, a fabulously comfy Queen bed, a generous lounge area with sofa and two chairs, a large widescreen TV/DVD player, iPhone-Pod dock, l’Occitane toiletries, masses of storage space and even a full-size Jacuzzi bath. Plus, separate shower and loo. And the Wi-Fi works. I am in heaven.

Suites 502 and 503 are even larger – perfect if you want to travel with your partner but also enjoy his and hers bathrooms. You can also opt for the expansive option of two lead-in staterooms joined together with the middle wall removed to give you your very own ‘his and hers’ bathrooms, lots of storage space and a large lounge.

Fresh flowers, fruit, a news bulletin – plus a daily cruise program – and pillow chocolates are delivered daily, and my steward, Toar Sahelangi, cleans my room beautifully, delighting the child in me with his array of towel animals.

I’m situated almost under the ship’s funnels, but the engine vibration is strangely comforting and never interrupts my deep sleep. And thanks to stabilizers and mostly calm seas, I never feel ill or discombobulated.

As we assemble after lunch for our first lifeboat muster drill, I notice, to my relief, that there are no children on board. The Wind Surf isn’t equipped with play areas for kids anyway, leaving adults to relax in the spacious lounge areas and on the upper decks. A popular hangout was the Compass Rose bar area with its two Jacuzzis and a small pool.

The dramatic sail away from each port is accompanied by an unfurling of the massive canopies, to the accompaniment of the Vangelis-penned theme from the movie 1492: Conquest of Paradise. A stirring soundtrack that sent shivers through me the first time I heard it.

Food, glorious food You can dine at any time of day or night in your suite, but I chose to mingle with other guests at all three of the ship’s restaurants during the 8-day cruise: Candles on the Star Deck, Amphora (more formal) and Stella Bistro (French influence).

Breakfast served on the Star Deck at the Veranda was a mix of buffet and à la carte options, including omelettes, tacos, waffles, cheeses and cold cuts. All non-alcoholic drinks are included in the price, but you’ll pay extra for alcohol.

There’s an optional $54-a-day wine tab, but unless you’re a heavy drinker, I recommend buying by the glass.

The weather was so gorgeous I enjoyed lunch every day at the al fresco Veranda restaurant on the top deck – keen to take advantage of the sunshine and amazing views. Again buffet and à la carte options were available with burgers, grilled chicken and meats, salads and desserts. And a great wine list.

The cooking station served daily offerings of roast pork, salmon, lamb and desserts, including ice cream and bread pudding. Too tempting to ignore, my increased food consumption meant regular morning workouts at the gym on the Star Deck.

Very well equipped with Technogym stations, it has wall-to-ceiling glass walls so you can watch the Adriatic pass by as you work off the superb cuisine.

Fresh seasonal ingredients are sourced at local ports daily. I especially enjoyed the scallops from Split where Exec Chef Eddie took us on a tour of the markets, as well a galley tour. He shared his bargaining tips for the tough fish market ladies, “You can always tell a fish is fresh by its clear eyes, and it must be pink inside the mouth”.

I dined one evening with our charming Captain Ricardo Pinzon and his officers – Wilhelm Steinbrunner (Hotel Manager) and Anthony Lapertosa (Guest Services Manager). The standard of service and attention to detail was appreciated by every guest I spoke to, who all spoke highly of the friendly and very professional care we all received from officers and crew alike.

Entertainment The casino –helmed by Casino Manager Andrea – had sufficient one-armed bandits to keep everyone happy. BlackJack, American Roulette and Three Card Poker were just some of the card games at the tables.

For retail therapy, head to the Signature Shop – a treasure trove of Windstar-branded merchandise (baseball caps to sweatshirts) in addition to high-end jewellery and watches. There was also a selection of daily live entertainment from superb professional singers and backing bands, as well as hilarious offerings from the Captain and crew.

Watersports platform Weather permitting, there are plenty of toys to be enjoyed at the back of the ship: a trampoline, water mat, single and double kayaks and a speed boat for water skiing. I took the single kayak out for a paddle and loved the sensation of freedom on the water bobbing about next to the giant Wind Surf was so exciting.

Spa services Cruising is all about relaxation, especially after a walking tour during the day. To ease sore muscles from a vigorous gym workout, I booked a superb Elemis seaweed wrap with deep tissue massage. Extremely relaxing and detoxifying, I had the best night’s sleep for weeks. The Spa also offers facials, acupuncture, scrubs, reflexology and a selection of hair and nail treatments.

Destinations and Excursions The beauty of a yacht the size of the Wind Surf is her ability to visit smaller ports in the Adriatic that many larger cruise ships cannot reach.

Every evening, we had a superb talk from Voyage Leader Gonzalo about the following day’s port of call and excursions. Not only are the excursions fun, I also found the English-speaking guides shared useful information about each location.

At anchor, lifeboats were used as tenders to ferry us to and from the dock. Surprisingly comfortable and fun, Windstar has a canopied area at each dock with refreshments to cool you while waiting for your return to the ship.

My 8-day magical sail from Rome to Venice was outstanding. Here are just some of the highlights:

Day 1 – Rome This incredible city needs no introduction. I stayed at the Ambasciatori Hotel. Colonna Palace Hotel opposite the Parliament building.

Arriving just 24 hours before we set sail, I had time to throw a euro into the Trevi Fountains, walk around the Ancient Forum, visit the Colosseum (outstanding), eat ice cream on the Corso, dinner at the xxx restaurant at xx hotel (superb), visit the wedding cake (aka the Altare della Patria) and the Pantheon. If you’re short of time, get a Rome Pass and enjoy a hop-on-hop-off double-decker bus to explore the city.

Day 2 – Amalfi Coast and Positano We anchored at 9 am in the at Amalfi in the Gulf of Salerno. Stunning coastal mountains drop vertiginously into azure seas. It was a dream made manifest to visit this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site. Amalfi, together with its neighbour Positano and the inland Ravello, are the jewels in the crown of this famous coastline.

I took a pre-booked excursion from Amalfi to Positano by boat. Positano’s Moorish-style houses cling to the slopes around a charming bay.

Our group climbed up the steep streets, shepherded by our ebullient guide Michelangelo, to see the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which contains the relics of the apostle St Andrew.

You can’t miss it: yellow façade and green, yellow and blue domed-tiled roof is a short climb up from the black sands of Marina Grande beach. The narrow streets are teeming with clothes and jewellery shops, together with art galleries and B&Bs. And luxury hotels like the Le Sirenuse, with its shady pool terrace affording beautiful views of the bougainvillea streets, beach and port below.

It’s the perfect location for a wonderful Italian coffee and the chance to take in the dreamlike quality of this uniquely charming town.

There was also an option for a coach tour to Ravello, a drive up the winding Dragon Valley in the mountains behind Positano. Visit Villas Rufolo and Cimbrone for spectacular views. Other excursions were visits to Ravello and Amalfi and the spectacular ruins of Pompeii.

Day 3 – Giardini Naxos, Sicily Waking up to see that the Wind Surf anchored in the bay of Taormina at Giardini Naxos was thrilling. I’d been to this part of the island before and stayed at a hotel perched on a cliff in Taormina. Seeing the island from the sea is so romantic.

At the time of arrival, the town of Taormina (adjacent to Giardini Naxos) was being prepared for the arrival of heads of state for the May G7 summit. As a result, the area was crawling with military and police – and plenty of undercover agents, too, eager to sweep before Trump and Melania made their first appearance.

I love Taormina. Built on cliff-top terraces, the amphitheatre is a must-see with superb views over the bay, where we watched with pride the Wind Surf sail out and look very impressive.

Each cruise has a private event – ours was a drive up the slopes of Mount Etna to visit the superb Gambini Vineyards at Linguaglossa. The wine tasting (I loved the reds) comes with local food (olives, cold cuts, dried tomatoes, locally made sausages, pecorino cheeses Superb antipasti, cold cuts and cheeses and bread.

Each dish was carefully explained, and we had the chance to buy wine afterwards. Fog and mist, unfortunately, meant we could see neither Etna nor the coast from our lunch table, but it did ensure that our focus was on the delicious food and wine.

Day 4 – Kotor Montenegro After a day at sea, we arrived at dawn at the entrance to the channel that leads to Kotor. One of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays, the fjord-like channels are beautiful, especially in the early morning light.

I explored the old town on foot – you don’t really need a guide here – and loved the narrow streets, the churches and the friendliness of the local people. Even a cute dog followed me for a while before I sat down for lunch at Konoba Scala Santa.

Trip Advisor reviews are mixed for this place, but I loved my fish soup, and they were very welcoming. In fact, everyone I met in Kotor was friendly, and prices weren’t the tourist rip-off.

A special highlight was a 1-hour climb to the ruined castle of San Giovanni, which majestically overlooks the old town. It’s a tough ascent on cobbles so you’ll need good walking shoes and water, but the views at the top are worth the workout.

Day 5 – Dubrovnik Wind Surf anchored directly outside Dubrovnik – giving us all incredible views of this unique walled city – already familiar to fans of Game of Thrones. It was my first visit to the city, and I loved it.

I joined a Dubrovnik City Sights and Cable Car Tour with a young and informative guide who shared his knowledge of the history of the area, mixed with wry observations of current politics. Our energetic walk along the ramparts gave us outstanding views of the azure water below.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, we entered the stairs at Pile Gate and had a wonderful walk along the southern part of the wall, passing the Mineta Fortress, St John’s Fortress, Bokar Fortress and the Maritime Museum.

Just a four-minute walk from the ramparts takes you to a 4-minute cable car ride ascending 778 meters to the top of Mt Srdj with its superb Old City and ocean views and a terraced restaurant.

Day 6 – Split, Croatia We docked about 15 minutes walk from the main town and I joined our talented Executive Chef Eddie for a morning market tour.

Cue much game-playing at the fish market between himself and an austere stallholder who initially was having none of his bargainings. (she later reduced her price).

How can you tell if a fish is fresh – smell aside? The eyes “should be clear and the gills and mouth a pink hue”. And when you’re buying mussels, they need to feel heavy.

The standout attraction in Old Split is the Diocletian Palace. Split Old Town is built on and around this amazing Roman Palace that dates from the 4th century.

A veritable maze of shops, restaurants and even a fashion shoot – the model was wearing the most beautiful lace dress I have ever seen. Other day trip options from the boat included Krka National Park highlights and rafting on the Cetina River.

Day 7 – Rovinj, Croatia My first trip to the Adriatic and the Dalmatian Coast, I had no idea what to expect in Rovinj and it was gorgeous—one of my favourite destinations on the cruise. Our visit was in the early season, so there were no other ships in the bay and very few tourists. Perfect!

The market on the quayside sold local natural produce, including honey, nuts, fruit-based snacks, oils for cooking and garnishing and even bee pollen.

I walked up to the church via narrow alleyways with their tiny cafes and restaurants perched above rocky outcrops where bathers and swimmers reposed lizard-like on the rocks.

Apparently, Rovinj used to be a tiny island until the channel separating it from the mainland was filled in in the ‘18th Century. It endured 500 years under Venetian rule, so the Italian influence is much in evidence.

Day 8 – Venice We were due to arrive in Venice at 7 am, but fortuitously, I awoke at 5.30 and went straight out on deck. To see the sunrise over Venice as we sailed slowly and sedately into the Lagoon is a sight I will never forget.

Venice revealing her majesty under a blood-orange sky was breathtaking. We disembarked early and headed for the ideally located Grand Hotel Ambasciatori, where I left my luggage (my flight wasn’t until later that day).

I headed for St Mark’s Square and watched the gondola oarsmen waiting for clients, marvelling at the architecture, before heading back in the opposite direction to the Rialto Bridge (wider than I remembered).

I hadn’t visited Venice since childhood, so returning with a different perspective was magical. It’s still overcrowded and overpriced, but that’s to be expected considering its uniqueness.

My water taxi ride to the airport was incredibly exciting. Combining my joint passions of speed and water, I felt very James Bond as we sped out into the Lagoon, the speedboat bouncing in the wake of other taxis.

We docked at the new water taxi station just a 10-minute walk from the airport terminal, and I was met by a Windstar who kindly walked me to the check-in desk. Superb service all the way with this cruise line, they really do look after their guests.

Travelling by cruise ship is effortless: your floating hotel travels with you – and you are cocooned in luxurious comfort from the outside world.

No stressful airline queues, taxis to hail or trains to catch – or miss. I can see why Windstar has been voted the World’s Best Small Ship Cruise Line by Condé Nast Traveller readers.

I’m still missing the ocean, the sense of adventure and waking up to new sights and sounds every morning.

And I’m missing the wonderful, warm-hearted crew who contributed so much to making each day so special for me. The Windstar experience provides guests with a much more intimate cruise, thanks to its smaller guest numbers and its 1:1 guest-client ratio.

As John F Kennedy once said: “We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.” I completely agree.

San Basilio Port Venice Wind Surf

Does anyone know about this port? From my map the Vaparetto # 2 and 82 go the the San Basilio stop. There is a small bridge very close to the vaparetto stop and the terminal, does the Wind Surf dock right there or is it further away? I ask because my husband has 72 year old goalie, hockey knees, yes he still plays goalie 2-3 times a week. I know Venice well but have never been to the port and I hate taking water taxis because they are so utterly expensive. We leave from Venice on 5/15. Thanks and Happy Sailing.

When we sailed on Star Clipper they used the San Basilio Pier. It's just as you described, a short distance over an easily navigated bridge from the vaporeto stop. It won't be a problem. If you arrive early, a nice place for a meal or glass of wine is the Trattoria San Basilio, just before you go over the bridge. You'll be able to see your boat from the Trattoria. Have a great time. The sail away along the canal is something one will never forget!

We stayed on Murano for three nights before our Star Pride cruise last year (2016). We caught the vaparetto from there to Piazzale Roma and then, just further along the landing stage, caught the 5.1 to San Basilio.

The small bridge you mention has a gentle, covered walkway over it so no steps to lug suitcases over! There are attendants waiting to direct you to the large sheds right in front of you where the suitcases are dealt with and you go through security and hand-luggage scanning.

Then we had a short ride in the waiting minibus to the ship.

Back in1999, we sailed out of Venice on the Wind Surf . . . . . . dined on deck at Candles and it was a late-evening departure . . . . . a truly magical 60th birthday present!

Thank you so much, The hockey knees so appreciate the informstion! We are staying three nighrs before in a renovated convent not far from the Santa Lucia train station. I fell in love with Venice when we got off a train in Venice my first sight was a funeral boat followed by a garbage boat, have been in lover ever since that was 1987. 12 years later 1999 first Wind Star on the Surf, fell in love, 20 cruises later combining both. Can't wait.

Just an FYI--We were told by Windstar that we would dock at San Basilio--and then sailed right past it into the main cruise port. I had verified just a few days before we left the US, so maybe 10 days prior. Have a plan B.

Thanks for all the information- we arrive in Venice on 5/17 from the Windsurf ! Question: best and cheapest way to get from ship to center of Venice to hotel. I've seen rates for 155 euros which seemed high but don't no - thank you in advance !

Hi, yes, warer taxis cost a 2nd morgage. We take vaparettos but that comes with a warning pack light. 40 years ago was my first time in Venice, had a large suitcase, just finished graduate school money tight. Took a vaparetto from Santa Lucia, train station, to our hotel, had to go over about 6 bridges to get to hotel. My light went on, when you come to Venice pack light. Actually have never checked a bag since. I do not know where in central Venice you will be because besides St. Marks there really is no center. The Vaparettos go inside and outside the Grand Canal. I suggest you set your GPS on your phone or buy a map, Amazon has a good plastic covered map of Venice to get to your hotel. Perhaps your hotel has a shuttle. From the entries in this thread the Vaparetto San Basillo is very close to the terminal and that goes along the Grand Canal. I wish I could be of better help. If you tell me your hotel i can probably tell you how to get there on a Vaparetto ( 8 Euros for 90 minutes ) I wish you a great trip.

Hi Orangeman 1968, You are right you could not get more central Venice!

Your Vaparetto Stop is San Marco Vallaresso and from San Basilio stop where the Wind Surf should be the # 82 will take you right there and you go straight up the little way to your hotel, seriously right there. Again, I do not know how you travel and the vaparetto might be crowded with other WS passengers but 8 Euros each vs 155 Euros. Looking at my map San Basilio is really close via water to your hotel's stop and 155 Euros sounds like an extraordinary amount of money for such a short distance. On-line there are water taxi companies in Venice check out their prices. I have only taken a water taxi once nearly fell over it was so expensive. I do not want to advise you because I do not know you and would not want you to be disappointed in my advice. If you are spending a few days in Venice think about getting a daily vaparetto pass, think about how many times you will take it you can save some money. For the airport you can take a vapatetto to Fondamente Nove and there get a boat to the airport. The hotels will always push a water taxi for they earn money for the hotels as well. Enjoy all. The Wind Surf. It's the whims of the port master, and he decided that day that we'd be going to the main cruise port.

I recommend looking on Tripadvisor on the Venice forums for information about the vaporettos, getting a 24/48-hour pass, where to buy them and how to use them.

(I think there's a site called Europe for Visitors too with a section on Venice which is very useful.)

Also useful to read other posts.

Very useful to be warned to validate your vap. pass BEFORE boarding or, approach the 'conductor' to have it done as we did because we saw no response from the ticket machine!

Windstar Cruises Welcomes Two New Ships to Fleet

• April 10, 2024

Windstar Cruises has announced the expansion of its fleet with the addition of the Star Seeker and Star Explorer.

The first of the two ships, the newbuild Star Seeker, is currently being constructed in the WestSEA shipyard and is expected to be delivered in December of 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026.

The Star Seeker was originally ordered by Mystic and slated for its Atlas brand, while the 2019-built Star Explorer is currently operating for Quark Expeditions on a charter from Mystic.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” says Windstar Cruises’ President Christopher Prelog.

“We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Each ship has 112 suites, featuring full private verandas and infinity windows, ensuring unparalleled views for every guest onboard. Additionally, two new Owner’s Suites with wrap-around balconies have been added to the aft of the ship, perfect for evening cocktails or a private dinner. With a capacity for 224 guests and a staff to guest ratio of 1:2, the ships maintain an intimate atmosphere, ensuring personalized service at every turn.

Guests will also enjoy access to several newly added Windstar guest favorites, including the brand’s iconic Watersports Platform with all-new staircase access, the cozy Yacht Club café and lounge, a two-story spa and fitness facility, an intimate forward whirlpool on the bow, and a spacious open deck perfect for sunbathing and Windstar’s famous deck barbeques.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

• If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
• Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
• After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
• We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.
