Visit Sweden up to 90 days during 180 days – apply for a visa

If you are a citizen in a country outside the EU and want to visit Sweden for a maximum of 90 days, you may need to apply for a visa. A visa is only valid for your stay in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a period of 180 days.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU and you want to visit Sweden (and the other Schengen countries), you may need to apply for a visa. A visa is a permit to enter a country and stay there up to 90 days.

Whether you need a visa depends on what country you are from or if you have a residence permit in another Schengen country or if you are permanently living in an EU country.

If you have a valid residence permit issued by another Schengen country, you do not need to apply for an entry visa to visit Sweden up to 90 days.

In certain countries, another Schengen country might represent Sweden. There are countries where Sweden has no representation, in other words has no embassy or consulate-general and is not represented by another country. If that is the case, you must check what applies to your area when it comes to visa applications.

If you are submitting your application to another Schengen country authority abroad, you need to contact them in advance. The reason for that is because that country’s requirements for documents apply. The documents should also be translated into that country’s language.

This is how you apply for a visa

Most people who are applying for a visa need to do it through an external service provider. You can visit your embassy’s website to find out if your embassy has an agreement with an external service provider.

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider and you are applying for a visa through the Swedish embassy in Tehran (Iran) you can apply through our e-service.

If you are unable to apply through an external service provider or through our e-services, you can apply by handing in a form directly to your embassy.

Apply for a visa through an external service provider

Find out if you need to apply for a visa through an external service provider by visiting your embassy’s website. There you can find more information about to apply.

When you apply through an external service provider you will be asked to give your fingerprint and application at the same time

Apply for a visa through e-service – applies to three embassies

If you are applying at this embassy you can submit your application online:

You can attach appendices in the e-service. A complete application with attached appendices will make the processing of your application easier. Before you begin the e-service you should remember to prepare the appendices in digital format (scanned) so that you can attach them to your application.

Please notice that if you have not been active in your application (added or edited information) for 72 hours, your application will be removed. Every time you edit your application you start a new 72-hour span, but in total you can only save your application for 14 days. If you have not submitted your application within 14 days, it will be removed.

Apply for a visa through an embassy

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider or if it does not offer an e-service, you must apply directly at the embassy. Keep in mind that it is important that you check to make sure what applies in your case. You can find more information on the embassy’s website.

After you have submitted your application

Follow your visa case.

If you applied online, you can follow your case in My page. You can see if a decision has been made and in some cases also book or cancel an appointment for a visit to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. You can also see the information and documents that you have enclosed in your application.

Log in to My page

Waiting time for the decision

You will usually receive an answer within two weeks, however the processing times at the embassies or consulates-general vary.

After the decision

The embassy or consulate-general will make the decision in your case and will notify you if you have been granted a visa or not. If you have submitted your application at the company that collects applications for the embassy or consulate-general you will receive a decision from that company.

If you are granted a visa, a permit sticker will be glued into your passport. The permit sticker says when and for how long the visa applies.

If you are not granted a visa, you can appeal the decision to the Migration Court. If the decision has been made by another member state that represents Sweden, the decision can be appealed to that member state’s authorities.

If you want to appeal

If your application has been rejected you can submit a written appeal no later than three weeks from the day when you received the decision. Instructions on how to submit the appeal can be found in the decision.

If the embassy or consulate-general changes the decision

The decision might be changed if new information is submitted. In that case, you will be notified and your visa is glued into your passport.

If the embassy or consulate-general does not change the decision it is forwarded

If the appeal was submitted on time, and the embassy or consulate-general does not feel that there is any reason to change the decision, they will forward the case to a Migration Court in Sweden as soon as possible. The court will then make the decision.

Facts about visa

A visa is only valid for your stay in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a period of 180 days.

It says on the visa sticker that is glued into your passport how many days you may stay in the Schengen countries. The days can be used during the time period that is indicated on the sticker. The period is often 15 days longer than the number of days that you are allowed to stay in the Schengen countries. The reason for this is so that you will have a chance to change your travel date if something unforeseen happens.

The visa can be valid for multiple entries or exits

On the visa sticker it says how many times you are allowed to enter and exit the Schengen countries during the period of validity.

You may apply for a Schengen visa that is valid for multiple entries if you visit Sweden on a regular basis. A visa with multiple entries can be valid for stays of up to 90 days during a 180 day period for up to five years.

The visa may only apply to certain countries

If you receive a visa you can often visit the other Schengen countries as well.

Your visa may in certain cases only be valid for entry and stay in Sweden or in certain Schengen countries, for example if your passport is not accepted by all Schengen countries.

Calculate your visa time

With the help of EU’s visa calculator you can calculate when you can travel into the Schengen area again, and how many days you can stay.

Controls at the border

Your short-stay visa allows you to travel to Sweden and usually to other Schengen States. It does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area therefore you may have to provide certain information at border or other controls. You may, for instance, have to provide information on your means of support, how long you intend to stay in Sweden and why you are visiting Sweden. In some cases, such checks may result in a refusal for the visa holder to enter Sweden or the Schengen area.

You should therefore carry with you copies of the documents which you presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay).

Extend a visit

A visitor's visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. If you have already stayed in a Schengen country for 90 days during the last 180-day period, you cannot extend your visa. Instead you can apply for a visitor’s residence permit.

Read more about a visitor's permit

Extending a visa

You can apply for an extension to your visa if your combined period of stay in the Schengen countries will not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period.

This is possible in the following cases:

  • force majeure – unforeseen events that prevent you from leaving Sweden or the Schengen countries, e.g. extreme weather
  • humanitarian reasons – if you or a close relative who lives in Sweden has been taken seriously ill, for example.

You can be granted a visa extension

  • if you have compelling personal reasons – this includes health care or a business trip.

The reason behind your need to extend the visa must have occurred after your entry into Sweden. You need to apply to extend your visa before it expires. Submit your application for an extension well in advance so that the Migration Agency has enough time to process your application before your current visa expires.

When you submit an application to extend your visa, you do not need to pay any fee. However, if the Migration Agency estimates that the application is based on strong personal reasons, you must pay a fee of 30 euros when we make a decision on your application. You will receive information on how to pay the fee before we make a decision.

An application to extend a visa because of force majeure or humanitarian reasons is free of charge.

How to apply for a visa extension

An application for a visa extension must be submitted before your visa expires. Leave your application at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s Service Centres.

The Migration Agency's visiting addresses See also the instructions in the application forms for any additional documents that you may need to attach.

You should enclose

  • the application form Application for Schengen Visa, form 118031. It is available at all Swedish Migration Agency’s permit units and here at our website
  • copies of the pages in your passport that show personal data and all entry stamps. The passport must be valid for the time that your stay in Sweden is expected to last
  • an explanation why you think you should be granted a visa extension
  • documentation which shows the reason why you need to prolong your stay (including certificates from companies, doctor’s certificate or similar)
  • individual medical travel insurance which covers the costs which could arise as a result of emergency medical assistance, emergency hospitalisation or medical repatriation. The insurance should cover costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid in all the Schengen countries.

Applications

Decisions regarding visas.

The Swedish Migration Agency will send you its decision regarding your visa application. If the Migration Agency has decided to grant you the right to an extended visa you will receive a permit sticker in your passport as proof of your extended visa. You or a representative (someone acting on your behalf) should go to the Swedish Migration Agency to have the sticker glued into your passport. Your representative needs to be authorised by you.

If the Swedish Migration Agency decides not to grant you an extended visa, your application will be rejected. A rejection of a matter which is reviewed according to the Visa Code cannot be appealed.

You have the right to stay in Sweden for as long as you have a valid visa. If your visa has expired you lose the right to stay in any of the Schengen countries. If you have applied to extend your stay after your visa has expired, you do not have the right to stay in Sweden and wait for the decision.

If you have applied for an extension to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days during the last 180-day period, other rules apply. Read more under the heading Visits lasting longer than 90 days.

Do I need a visa to visit Sweden?

Sweden is part of both the European Union and the Schengen Zone , making it easy for travelers from those regions to visit. For travelers from other parts of the world, the rules are quite straightforward, but it’s important to review the requirements well in advance to avoid any difficulties.

What you need to know about visas in Sweden

Citizens of the European Union may visit Sweden without a visa and may live, work and study in Sweden without a residence permit. Travelers from outside the EU may visit the Schengen Zone, including Sweden, for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your stay in the Schengen Zone.

Even if you do not need a visa, you may still be asked to show a return ticket valid within 90 days, a hotel booking or other confirmed accommodations, and proof of enough funds to support yourself during your stay.

Staying longer in Sweden

If you are not an EU citizen and wish to visit Sweden or Schengen for up to 90 days, you may need a visa. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and numerous other countries are exempt from this visa requirement for stays of up to 90 days.

Travelers who need a visa include citizens of most Asian and African countries, as well as a scattering of countries in eastern Europe and Latin America. Visit the Schengen Visa Policy web page for a handy world map showing visa requirements or consult the Swedish government’s list of countries whose citizens need visas to enter Sweden.

Don't leave your Sweden visa arrangements to the last minute

If you need a Schengen visa, you should apply well in advance, but no earlier than six months before your trip. If your trip involves more than one Schengen country, you should apply for a visa through an embassy or consulate of the country where you will spend the most time. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your stay, be issued within the last 10 years and have at least two empty pages. You also need to have emergency medical insurance valid for the duration of your stay. Full information about required documents for applying for a visa is available on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website .

Six-month visitor permits for Sweden

If you intend to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days you will need to apply for a visitor’s permit through the Swedish Migration Agency, unless you are an EU citizen. If you are already in Sweden you can usually apply for a visitor’s permit to extend your stay for another 90 days. If you know in advance that you intend to stay more than 90 days, you can normally apply for a six-month visitor’s permit before your trip rather than entering on a tourist visa for the first 90 days.

To apply your passport must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your planned visit, and you must be able to support yourself during your stay in Sweden and have a return ticket or sufficient funds to buy a ticket home. Other conditions may apply depending on your nationality and the purpose of your extended stay. See the Swedish Migration Agency’s website for full guidelines for applying for a visitor’s permit.

Entering Sweden from another Schengen country

When you enter Sweden from another Schengen country you typically do not have to pass through any sort of immigration check, but you must still have a valid passport or national identity card available to present to the authorities if asked. There is a border check on the Øresund bridge, so if you are entering Sweden from Denmark by road or train you must have your passport or national ID card ready for inspection. Other border checks may be implemented occasionally under special circumstances.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Sweden is a party to the Schengen Agreement. Visit the  Embassy of Sweden  website for the most current visa information.

Traveling Through Europe: If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for  at least three months beyond the period of stay. If you plan on transiting a Schengen country, review our  U.S. Travelers in Europe page.
  • You will need  sufficient proof of funds  and  a return plane ticket .
  • For additional information about visas for the Schengen area, see the  Schengen Visa page.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:   The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Sweden.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism : Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Sweden has been subject to terrorist incidents in the past and the potential for a future terrorist incident remains.  As in other countries in the Schengen area, Sweden’s open borders with its European neighbors could permit terrorist groups to enter and exit the country with anonymity. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks, but all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.

For more information, see our Terrorism page .

Crime:  Sweden has a low crime rate, and most crimes involve the theft of personal property from vehicles, residences, and public areas. While armed violence against the public continues to be a rare occurrence, violent crimes, such as homicides and sexual assaults, can occur. The majority of violent crimes occur in Sweden’s larger cities, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. Organized crime groups have also committed armed acts against each other.

Pickpocketing and petty theft are common in and around major tourist attractions, especially Stockholm’s Old Town (“Gamla Stan”) as well as at restaurants, coffee shops, amusement parks, museums, bars, airports, and on public transportation.

Hotel breakfast rooms and lobbies attract well-dressed, professional thieves who blend in with guests and target purses and briefcases left unguarded by tourists and business travelers.

Do not buy counterfeit or pirated goods, even if they are widely available. Not only are counterfeit goods illegal to bring back into the United States, but if you purchase them, you may also be breaking local law.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams : See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Sweden. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • romance/online dating
  • money transfers
  • bank overpayments
  • online relationships that evolve into requests for emergency financial assistance

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of crime, including sexual assault, should first contact local police authorities by dialing 112. Crime victims may contact the U.S. Embassy at +46 (8) 785-5300 after they have contacted local authorities.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting all crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide information on  Sweden’s Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism : The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

There is no provision for bail in Sweden. U.S. citizens who are arrested may be held in custody until an investigation or trial is concluded, either of which can range in duration from a few days to a year or more.

Drug and Alcohol Enforcement: Swedish law enforcement authorities have no tolerance for illegal drugs, including marijuana. Marijuana of all forms, including CBD products, are illegal to bring into or possess in Sweden. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in Sweden are strict, and convicted offenders can face imprisonment, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering Sweden.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs, is considered a very serious offense. The maximum legal blood-alcohol level is .02% - much lower than in the United States. Swedish police often conduct alcohol tests on roads and highways. Drunk driving rules are strictly enforced and fines can be severe, including possible jail sentences.

Child Protection Laws: The treatment of children is taken very seriously in Sweden. All forms of corporal punishment of children are against the law, and any form of violence, humiliating treatment, or neglect may result in the child being taken away from parents by the Swedish authorities and placed into long-term care by Sweden’s social services and/or criminal charges being brought against the offending parent. Homeschooling is not allowed in Sweden, except under extraordinary circumstances.

Compulsory Military Service: In March 2017, Sweden reintroduced military conscription for men and women. Dual U.S.-Swedish citizens are also subject to conscription, although persons who have previously done military service may be excluded from the requirement and should contact the Swedish Ministry of Defense for more information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Sweden.

See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Sweden prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. Accessibility to public facilities and transportation in Sweden is extensive. The Swedish Government actively funds programs promoting disability access to streets, public buildings, stores, restaurants, and public transportation. For more information on accessibility in Sweden, visit the  Tourist Bureau ’s website.

Students: See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Medical care in Sweden is comparable to that found in the United States. Non-residents are expected to pay their own medical costs in full.

For emergency services in Sweden, dial 112. Assistance in English is available.

Ambulance services are widely available.

For non-emergencies, you can visit a local medical center or clinic, called an “Akutmottagning” or “Vardcentral.” Be prepared to present your passport.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept credit card payments. See our  webpage  for more information on insurance overseas. Visit  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with Sweden’s  Medical Products Agency  to ensure the medication is legal in Sweden. Please note that local physicians may not prescribe the quantities or dosages of medication that a U.S. doctor would. Stringent Swedish customs regulations prohibit the shipment of drugs to Sweden. Most pharmacies (“Apotek”) are open during normal shopping hours, but major cities will have a 24-hour pharmacy.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended for international travel by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of local hospitals and health facilities here .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Swedish roads are comparable to those in the United States, though secondary roads may be less heavily traveled. Road signs use standard international symbols and Swedish text. Many urban streets have traffic lanes reserved for public transportation only.

All vehicles on the road must have their headlights turned on, no matter the time of day. You must use snow tires between December 1 and March 31, and you should be experienced driving on ice and snow if you are going to drive in the winter.

You must use seat belts, and children under 135cm (4ft 5 inches) in height must be seated in approved child or booster seats.

Gas stations in rural areas can be far apart. Some stations are unattended and require a credit card with a chip to purchase fuel.

Slower vehicles should move onto the shoulder to allow faster moving vehicles to pass.

Traffic Laws: You can use a valid U.S. driver’s license while visiting Sweden, or as a resident in Sweden registered for less than one year, but you must be at least 18 years old to drive.

The maximum speed limit is 120 kilometers per hour (approximately 75 miles per hour).

Public Transportation: Public transportation in Sweden is the recommended way to travel within larger cities. Taxis are more expensive than in major U.S. cities. Most local residents use public transport in Stockholm, as parking can be expensive. The bus, train, and subway systems are considered safe. Cyclists are common on many roads, especially in urban areas.

See our  Road Safety page  or Driving in Sweden website for more information. Visit the website of Sweden’s  national tourist office  and  national transport administration  responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Sweden’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Sweden’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Sweden should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and the  NGA maritime safety information website .

Sweden Visit Visa Application Process & Requirements

Travel_Guide

If you’re planning an adventure to the breathtaking landscapes of Sweden, the home of the Northern Lights and Midsummer celebrations, you’ve landed at the right place.

Today, we’ll navigate the complexities of the Sweden visit visa application process, unraveling every requirement and guideline along the way.

Let’s get started!

Apply Online

In this article…

Chapter 1: Do You Need a Visa?

Before delving into the process, it’s important to ascertain whether you need a visa to visit Sweden. Citizens of EU/EEA countries and several non-EU countries, including the USA, Australia , Canada , and Japan , are exempted from visa requirements for stays up to 90 days.

However, if you’re from a country outside the EU/EEA and the exemptions do not apply, you’ll need a Schengen visa to visit Sweden.

Check the official Swedish government website at www.government.se for a comprehensive list of countries whose citizens require a visa.

💡 Tip: Buy travel health insurance before your trip.

Check out popular travel insurance plans and choose one that suits you.

Most plans only cost less than $20 a day.

Chapter 2: Understanding the Schengen Visa

Sweden, being part of the Schengen Area, grants Schengen visas for tourist visits.

This visa permits the holder to stay in the Schengen area, which includes Sweden, for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Keep in mind that the Schengen visa does not permit you to work in Sweden.

Chapter 3: Initiating the Application Process

3.1 where to apply.

You must apply for your visa at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country.

You can find the contact details of Swedish diplomatic missions abroad on the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website at www.swedenabroad.se .

3.2 The Application Form

The visa application form can be downloaded from the embassy or consulate’s website or obtained directly from the embassy or consulate.

Make sure to fill out the form correctly and completely.

Chapter 4: Gathering Required Documents

Applying for a Schengen visa to Sweden requires several documents :

  • Visa Application Form : Complete this with accurate details.
  • Valid Passport : It must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages.
  • Passport-Sized Photos : Two recent photos taken within the last six months.
  • Travel Itinerary : Evidence of your travel plans, including round-trip flight reservations.
  • Proof of Accommodation : Confirm where you will be staying throughout your visit, whether it’s a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a host living in Sweden.
  • Travel Insurance : This should cover at least EUR 30,000 for emergency medical expenses and repatriation.
  • Proof of Financial Means : You need to demonstrate that you have enough funds to support your stay in Sweden.
  • Visa Fee : This is generally EUR 80 for adults and EUR 40 for children aged 6-12.

Chapter 5: Submitting the Application

With all the necessary documents in hand, submit your application at the Swedish embassy or consulate.

The submission process typically involves booking an appointment online. During your appointment, you might be interviewed about your travel plans.

Fingerprints and a photograph will also be taken if you have not provided this data within the last 59 months.

Chapter 6: After the Application

6.1 waiting for the decision.

The processing time for a Schengen visa to Sweden can take up to 15 days. However, in some cases, it can extend up to 30 or even 60 days, so plan ahead.

6.2 Picking Up Your Visa

Once the embassy or consulate has made a decision, you’ll be notified to come and pick up your passport.

If your application is accepted, your visa will be stamped in your passport.

Chapter 7: Essential Points to Note

7.1 check visa validity.

Once you receive your visa, check the validity dates. The “from…until” dates on your visa sticker represent the period within which you can travel, not the duration of stay.

7.2 Respect the Rules

Remember, having a visa doesn’t guarantee entry. The final decision is made by the border control authorities. Therefore, it’s important to respect the rules and regulations of the Schengen agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applications should be submitted personally either through the Swedish Consulate, or the consulate of a country that represents the consular affairs of Sweden.

A list of Swedish embassies and consulates is available here .

Applications should be submitted only in the country of citizenship or residence.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Sweden set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Swedish Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Sweden.

Accompanied under-18s

Carry a letter of consent from the parent or guardian of children under 18 who are travelling with you.

Passport validity requirements

To travel to Sweden, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

To enter Sweden (and all Schengen countries) your passport must:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. Passports issued after 1 October 2018 are now valid for only 10 years, but for passports issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added if you renewed a passport early
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

If you’re a visitor, your passport must be stamped when you enter or leave the Schengen area (which includes Sweden). Border guards will use passport stamps to check you haven’t overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for stays in the Schengen area. If your passport was not stamped, border guards will presume you have overstayed the visa-free limit.

If your passport was not stamped, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

If you live in Sweden, read our Living in Sweden guide for passport stamping information.

At Swedish border control, you may also need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay

Border controls on arrival from Denmark and Germany

Border controls are in place in Sweden for people travelling from Denmark via the Öresund crossing and arriving on ferries from Denmark and Germany.

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area (which includes Sweden) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends

to attend business meetings, cultural or sports event

  • for short-term studies or training

If you’re travelling to Sweden and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Swedish government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Swedish Embassy in the UK .

If you stay in Sweden with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and vaccination certificates you may need in TravelHealthPro’s Sweden guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Sweden . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food and drink into the EU

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food. Check the rules about taking food and drink into the EU on the European Commission website.

Taking money into Sweden

Many shops, cafes and restaurants do not accept cash, so make sure you have a debit or credit card with you.

Can Indians Get a Sweden Visa on Arrival?

No, Indian travellers are not granted a visa on arrival in Sweden. A visa must be obtained in advance to ensure smooth entry into the country.

Applying for a Schengen Visa via a Swedish Diplomatic Mission:

Visiting a Single Schengen State:

Apply at the Swedish consulate if Sweden is your sole destination or the first point of entry into the Schengen zone.

Visit Across Multiple Schengen States:

  • Apply at the Swedish consulate if Sweden is where you'll spend most of your trip.
  • For trips through various Schengen states with equal stay duration, such as visiting Sweden, Germany, and France, apply at the consulate of the first country you'll enter, in this case, Sweden.

Visit Purpose:

The main purpose of your visit determines where to apply. If uncertain or if your journey involves multiple countries, aim for the embassy or consulate of the first Schengen country you enter.

For example, if attending a conference in Sweden is the main reason for your trip, apply at the Swedish consulate, even if you plan to visit other countries.

Schengen Visa (Short Stay):

  • Uniform Visa: With a uniform visa, you can travel to the specified States for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. You can calculate your allowed stay using the short stay calculator on the European Commission's Directorate-General for Home Affairs website.
  • Visa with Limited Territorial Validity: This visa type permits travel exclusively to the State(s) mentioned on the visa sticker and does not include other Schengen States.

National Visa (D Visa): For individuals intending to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days within a 180-day period. D-visas are rarely granted and are primarily considered based on the urgency of the travel.

Business Visa: Tailored for Indians with business intentions, this visa grants a 90-day stay in Sweden for activities like attending conferences, meetings, or trade events.

Study/Sports/Cultural Visa: Apply for this visa if you're travelling for study, sports, or cultural purposes.

Airport Transit Visa: An airport transit visa permits its holder to transit through the international transit areas of the issuing State and, if specified on the visa sticker, potentially through transit areas in other States.

Mandatory Documents

Supporting documents, photograph guidelines and specifications for sweden visa application.

Photo requirements for a Sweden visa for Indian citizens include:

Recent Photograph: The photograph used for the visa must not be older than 6 months.

Size and Specifications: Your photograph should meet these specific dimensions:

  • Dimensions: 35mm x 45mm (width x height)
  • The face must cover 70 to 80% of the photograph
  • The background of the photo should be plain and white.

Photograph Guidelines and Specifications for Sweden Visa Application

Position of Head: Your head must be visible in its entirety and positioned centrally in the frame.

Glasses and Headwear: Glasses can be worn as long as they do not cause a reflection obscuring the eyes. While religious head coverings are permitted, they must not hide any part of the face, from the chin to the forehead and across all facial features.

Photo Quality: The photograph must be in colour, high-resolution, and without any shadows, red-eye effect, or reflections to ensure clarity.

Teleport Expert Tip

Make sure the photograph for your application matches the one in your passport and adheres strictly to the specified requirements. To avoid application delays or denial, use a recent photograph that fulfils all these criteria.

While you have the convenience of taking your visa photo at the centre, be aware that it may be more costly and time-consuming than bringing a photo with you.

The processing duration for a Sweden visa for Indian applicants can vary, but it typically ranges from 15 to 21 working days from the date the embassy processes the application.

Teleport’s Expert Tip

Begin your Schengen visa application for Sweden well ahead of your planned travel date, preferably up to 6 months prior. During peak season, it's recommended to submit your application at least 4 weeks in advance to ensure timely processing.

Indian nationals are permitted to remain in Sweden for up to 90 days on a Schengen visa within any 180-day period. This means you can spend a cumulative total of 90 days in Sweden or any other Schengen area countries within 180 days.

If your intention is to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days or extend an existing visit beyond 90 days, you must apply for a visitor's permit.

However, if you already have an ongoing application for a residence permit at the Swedish Migration Agency, you cannot be granted two permits simultaneously.

In such cases, you will only receive a decision on the application that offers you the most advantages, typically a residence and work permit. If you apply for a visitor's permit while in Sweden, it might jeopardise your residence and work permit application.

If you're outside of Sweden, it's recommended to wait for a decision on the most advantageous application. This could mean that the dates you intended to apply for a visitor's permit may have passed by the time the decision is made. Therefore, it's advisable not to apply for a visitor's permit in such cases.

Requirements for a visitor's permit:

  • Ability to support yourself financially during your stay in Sweden.
  • Possession of a valid passport with at least three months of validity beyond your visit's end date.
  • A return ticket or funds to purchase a return ticket.

Apply for a visitor's permit

To apply for a visitor's permit, you can use the e-service if you are in Sweden and wish to extend your visit to a total of more than 90 days.

To utilise the e-service, you should be able to make the application fee payment with a credit card or charge card. Upon completing your application in the e-service, you will need to schedule an appointment at an embassy or consulate-general to present your passport.

This appointment can be arranged in your home country or country of residence if you're applying from outside Sweden, or in Sweden if you're applying from within the country. During this appointment, you will also undergo fingerprinting and photography.

It's important to note that this process applies even if you've had a residence permit card previously, as your photo and fingerprints are not retained.  If you are applying from abroad, you will also have an interview at the embassy or consulate-general.

To keep track of your Sweden visa application progress, you may use services like Teleport or consult with VFS Global if your application was submitted through them.

Check Your Sweden Visa Application Status with Teleport

If you used Teleport for your visa application, expect to receive prompt updates through WhatsApp, email, or directly on the Teleport Dashboard.

To check your application status:

  • Sign into the Teleport Dashboard .
  • Head over to 'Your Applications.’

  • Enter the reference number you were given upon making your payment at the VFS centre.
  • Type in your surname.
  • Click "Submit" to receive the latest status update on your application.

Indian nationals seeking a Sweden visa must have valid travel medical insurance. Being part of the Schengen Zone, Sweden necessitates that its visitors are adequately insured for their trip.

Key Considerations for Selecting Travel Insurance for a Schengen Visa:

  • Minimum Coverage: Your insurance should provide a minimum of €30,000 for medical emergencies, including sickness or accidents, throughout your stay in Sweden.
  • Suggested Features: Choose a policy that covers hospital stays, repatriation, emergency medical transportation, and issues that might disrupt your travel plans.
  • Insurance Providers in India: Look into policies offered by well-known companies like Tata AIG, Digit Insurance, and HDFC Ergo to find one that matches your requirements and financial plan.

Inaccurate or Altered Documents: Submission of falsified or incorrect documents can cause your application to be declined. All documents must be genuine and adhere to Sweden travel visa requirements for Indians.

Inconsistent Travel Plans: Any inconsistency between your stated travel itinerary and actual plans, such as discrepancies in hotel bookings or flight tickets, can lead to doubts and possibly, application denial.

Insufficient Financial Means: It is essential to show you have enough funds for your stay, typically about SEK 450(INR 3,300/-) per day per person. A recommended bank balance is at least INR 3,00,000 prior to application.

Unclear Purpose of Visit: Uncertainty regarding the legitimacy of the trip's purpose or the risk of overstaying may lead to visa refusal.

Limited Travel Record: Applicants with minimal international travel history, particularly for specific visa categories or frequent travellers, may face challenges in their application process.

Damaged Passport: Application rejection may occur if your passport is damaged, such as having tears, missing pages, or not having enough validity. Make sure your passport is in good condition and valid.

For a smoother visa application process, it is advisable to present solid evidence of financial stability. Keep a minimum balance of INR 3,00,000 for each applicant, supported by transparent bank statements and tax returns.

If your visa application was denied and you're not satisfied with the decision, you have the right to appeal. The denial letter will explain why your application was rejected. To challenge this decision, you must submit a written appeal within three weeks from the date you received the denial.

Submitting your appeal after three weeks will result in automatic rejection by the Embassy.

Your appeal should include:

  • The decision you're contesting.
  • How you wish the decision to be revised.
  • Your full name, date of birth, postal address, email, and phone number.
  • Any new evidence or information that wasn’t part of your original application.

Compose your appeal in English or Swedish and send it via email to: [email protected]

Alternatively, you can mail your physical appeal directly to the Embassy.

Avoid sending multiple appeals or using different methods to submit the same appeal.

If your appeal is signed by someone else on your behalf, ensure they have the legal authority to represent you, demonstrated by a power of attorney.

If the Embassy decides to amend its decision:

If the Embassy considers revising the decision in your favour, based on new information or an error in the initial decision, they will get in touch with you.

If the Embassy upholds its decision:

If your appeal is timely but the Embassy sees no grounds to alter the decision, your case, along with all related documents, will be sent to the Administrative Court in Stockholm for review. Once your case is transferred, any inquiries should be directed to the court. You can find their contact details through the link provided on the Förvaltnings Domstolen website .

Timeline for the Appeal Process:

If the Embassy opts to reconsider its decision upon receiving your appeal, they will contact you within a few days. However, if the Embassy forwards your appeal to the Stockholm court, be prepared for a longer waiting period. For details on the processing times, visit the Så avgörs mål om visum section on the Förvaltningsrätten i Stockholm website (domstol.se).

Determining the need for an airport transit visa (ATV) for Sweden depends on two distinct situations:

  • Transiting Through an Airport's International Zone: This means staying within the international zone of the airport without exiting it. For example, if your connecting flight is booked under the same PNR, there is no requirement to exit the transit zone, thereby eliminating the need for an ATV.
  • Exiting the Airport's International Transit Area: This situation arises when you leave the airport's international zone.

Possessing an Airport Transit Visa enables you to stay within the international transit zone at a Swedish airport while you wait for your connecting flight to a country outside the Schengen area. Note, this visa does not grant permission to enter the Schengen zone for activities like overnight hotel stays or catching another flight within the Schengen countries.

  • Organise Your Travel Documents: Make sure to have all essential documents such as your passport, valid Sweden visa (if needed), return flight ticket, and accommodation reservations readily available for inspection by immigration officials. Proper organisation facilitates a swift and hassle-free entry.
  • Advice for Unaccompanied Minors: Unaccompanied minors should stay near the airline staff assigned for their care during the flight for safety. Upon landing, they should promptly find the designated adult meeting them at the airport to ensure a secure and straightforward handover.
  • Understanding Sweden’s Entry Regulations: Familiarise yourself with Sweden's customs rules prior to your arrival. Should you need to declare goods or if your baggage is subject to inspection, proceed directly to the customs area without delay. Knowing these regulations beforehand can help avoid complications with customs upon arrival.

By following these guidelines and staying informed about Sweden’s entry and customs rules, your entry at the Sweden airport can be seamless and stress-free.

To summarise, obtaining a tourist visa for Sweden for Indian nationals requires meticulous preparation and awareness of several key procedures and requirements. It is crucial to understand the visa application process, assemble all necessary documents, and ensure you have valid travel insurance.

Sweden does not offer visa on arrival, thus applications must be submitted through recognized channels such as Teleport or VFS Global. Ensuring compliance with Sweden's entry regulations is essential for a smooth transition upon arrival.

With careful planning and adherence to guidelines, Indian travellers can anticipate an enriching experience in Sweden, with its vibrant cultural scene, stunning natural beauty, and dynamic cities.
