As you embark on your Martinborough tour, you’ll quickly realize why this charming New Zealand destination has become a haven for wine enthusiasts from around the globe.

A Tale of Terroir and Taste

Martinborough’s wine story began in the late 1970s when a group of visionary winemakers recognized the region’s potential. They carefully selected this pocket of land on the North Island and began planting vineyards. What sets Martinborough apart is its distinct terroir – a combination of soil, climate, and geography that gives drinks their unique character.

Pinot Paradise

While Martinborough produces a variety of wine styles, it has truly earned its reputation as a Pinot Noir paradise. The terroir here is often compared to Burgundy, France, making it an ideal location for this finicky grape. Expect to taste Pinot Noirs with a range of flavors, from vibrant red berries to earthy notes, all with the hallmark Martinborough elegance.

Variety Beyond Pinot

While Pinot Noir takes the center stage, Martinborough is no one-trick pony. Winemakers here also craft exceptional Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Syrah. Each drink tells a unique story of the land and the people who cultivate it.

Scenic Beauty and Boutique Wineries

Beyond the wine, Martinborough’s countryside is a visual treat. The region’s compact size allows for an intimate and leisurely exploration of its boutique wineries. Many of these family-owned establishments are set in picturesque settings, offering stunning views of rolling hills and lush vineyards. It’s not uncommon to find the winemaker behind the counter, eager to share their craft with visitors.

Wine Tasting with a Personal Touch

One of the most delightful aspects of touring Martinborough’s wineries is the personal touch. Many cellar doors offer a relaxed and intimate tasting experience. You’ll have the chance to chat with winemakers and vineyard owners, gaining insights into their winemaking philosophy and the unique aspects of Martinborough’s terroir.

Best Martinborough Winery Tours to Book in 2024

Wondering about the best way to visit Martinborough wineries? These top Martinborough winery tours will ensure you have an awesome day out.

Martinborough has to be high on your New Zealand bucket list if you’re a wine lover but getting to Martinborough , in the Wairarapa Valley can be tricky without a hire car, not to mention having to arrange a sober driver to get between wine tastings.

That’s why I’ve put together this guide on the best Martinborough wine tours so you can explore the Martinborough wineries without the transport hassles or anyone missing out!

Martinborough winery tours make life easier by picking you up from central Martinborough, or even from your Wellington hotel, taking you straight to the best wineries in the area and returning you safely home. Some even include gourmet lunches.

If you do have your own car for getting to Martinborough and are happy finding your own way around then I’d still recommend doing a self-guided Martinborough tour by bike.

You can use our guide on the best Martinborough wineries which has an itinerary, a Martinborough wine trail map and tips for getting around. But if the DIY route isn’t for you, keep reading for the best Martinborough vineyard tour options.

This guide covers a range of 8 vineyard tours in Martinborough and the broader Wairarapa region with details of cost, start and finish point, itinerary and where you can book each tour.

Some tours are bookable through Get Your Guide and others through Viator, but prices are the same wherever you book.

While we try and keep this guide as up-to-date as possible, costs can change and even the quoted price may vary if you add hotel transfers etc. All prices are in NZ dollars.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Some experiences aren’t bookable year-round as small businesses close over winter. If you are visiting from April to November in off-peak season, the Zozo Travel tours are the most consistently available option.

Overall Best Martinborough Wine Tour

If you’re short on time and just want to know the CliffsNotes version, here’s the number one tour I’d recommend.

Martinborough Wine Tour Comparison

To help you compare all the different options, I’ve put together the table below with a shortlist of highly-rated and reliable Martinborough tours. Keep reading for more detail on each of them

Martinborough wine tours from Wellington

The main company that offers wine tours from Wellington is Zozo travel, and they have at least 5 different options to suit all tastes.

Here are the top three that we would recommend for anyone planning a winery day trip from Wellington.

wine

Martinborough Wine Tour

This tour is the best Wairarapa wine tour from Wellington if you are looking for a proper wine-focused day out.

While some of the other tours from Zozo travel are more rounded foodie experiences, this one is a straight-up wine tour so you can expect to spend most of your day at the Martinborough cellar doors, learning about the wines that are made and of course tasting them.

Zozo Travel is a very experienced operator who knows the Wairarapa wine region well so you can bet they’ve picked the best Martinborough wineries o take you to and they’ll make sure you have a good time.

This would be a great option for a girls’ trip to Martinborough .

Lunch is not included but there are opportunities to buy food along the way.

From Wellington: Half-Day Foodie Tour of the Wairarapa

This is 100% the best Martinborough gourmet wine tour we would recommend for foodies, because not only do you get wine tastings, but you also stop at the best cheese shop in the Wairarapa, the best chocolate shop in the whole Wellington region and more delicious foodie destinations along the way.

While this tour isn’t specifically wine-focused you absolutely will get that glass of Martinborough pinot.

However, if you aren’t a huge wine drinker and want a more balanced Wairarapa day tour from Wellington then this is ideal for you because it really does include a bit of everything.

This could even suit non-drinkers who can swap their wine tasting for an extra chocolate tasting!

Lunch is not included in this one, although you can buy your own and to be honest if you go hard at the included food tastings you might not need it.

Martinborough Wine and Food Tour with Lunch from Wellington

This tour is very similar to the above and run by the same company, the difference, and the reason you might want to consider it is that there are quite a bit more inclusions.

With this tour, you get a Martinborough vineyard lunch with a matched drink plus craft beer tastings at the Martinborough Brewery. That’s on top of cheese, chocolate and olive oil tastings too.

We like that they also make a stop at the summit of the Remutaka Ranges on the way from Wellington to the Wairarapa so you can take in the panoramic views of the Hutt River Valley.

If you want an all-inclusive Martinborough winery tour from Wellington with lots of food and drinks, then this is the day tour for you.

More Martinborough winery tour options

There are several more companies running Wairarapa wine tours starting in Martinborough or other nearby towns. We’ve narrowed it down to the 5 best to make it easier for you.

wine Martinborough

2024 Update: This tour isn’t currently bookable but we hope it’ll be back soon.

Martinborough wine walks are one of the only companies offering a walking tour of the Martinborough vineyards, the rest are mostly van tours with one bike option (below).

The best part of these walks is that they team you up with a local expert who really knows their stuff.

Rather than a more structured package tour, this feels just like an outing with a friend. Often the guides are winemakers themselves of were in the past.

You can expect to visit 3-4 of the best Martinborough wineries on this tour that have been handpicked as a mix of more established vineyards and newer or more specialist operations.

This Martinborough tour is all about the wine so it will suit true connoisseurs and those who really want to go deep on learning about the Martinborough wine region.

Cost: from $280 per person including a full lunch

Self-Guided Martinborough Wineries Bike Tour

This tour is operated by Green Jersey which is the most popular bike hire company in Martinborough, and they’ve arranged an awesome Martinborough bike tour for those who prefer an independent wine tour.

Because the wineries in Martinborough are relatively close together and its mostly quiet country roads around the town, bike tours really are the perfect way to see the area and get around.

With this tour, not only do you get bike and helmet hire for the day, but Green Jersey will collect any bottles of wine you buy throughout the day to save you from lugging them around in the basket of your bike.

Just tell the staff at the winery that you’re with Green Jersey and give your name and your wine will magically end up back at Green Jersey HQ when you come to return your bike.

More importantly, they pack you a picnic full of delicious products so you can enjoy a Martinborough winery lunch wherever takes your fancy.

Go direct to Green Jersey Cycles to book your bike hire.

Pinot to Palliser tour

Pinot to Palliser is the only wine tour from Martinborough that includes some of the broader Wairarapa region.

Not only do you get to try the pinot noirs that Martinborough vineyards are known for, but you get to explore the stunning Cape Palliser, the southernmost point on the north island.

You can climb the stairs to the lighthouse and look out to the South Island in the distance, step back into history at the Māori fishing village of Ngawi and spot some seals along the way.

Lunch is included at the historic Lake Ferry Hotel, a super scenic location with bistro-pub style food.

We like that the wine tastings in this tour are at the end of the day so that you’re not drinking at 10 am and you can choose to stay on for more wine if you want.

For more information about Cape Palliser, read the full guide here .

Cost: from $295

Martinborough in a day

This tour really does what it says on the tin, it’ll show you the best of Martinborough in a day.

The best part of this tour and what distinguishes it from some of the other Martinborough wineries tours is that it goes behind the scenes, rather than just dropping in for a wine tasting, you get a full vineyard tour.

Likewise, when you visit an olive oil producer, you get to explore the whole grove.

This Martinborough tour is accessible from Wellington too as while they don’t offer transfers to the city, they will pick you up from the Featherston train station, so you just have to jump on the Wairarapa line and you’ll get there without any trouble.

This takes away the most difficult part of visiting Martinborough on your own which is transport from Featherston to Martinborough.

This tour also has one of the best lunch inclusions with two courses and matched wine available, perfect for foodies wanting a real gourmet experience.

Given that, this actually works out as really good value for money.

Cost: from $210

Taste Martinborough Wine & Food Walking Tours

Taste Martinborough, which runs this day tour, is the only Martinborough wine-tasting company that guarantees that your guide will be an experienced winemaker.

So, if you know your stuff when it comes to wine and want the chance to talk to an expert as you work your way around the vineyards then this is the tour for you.

It also incorporates some of the local food producers with an olive oil tasting and mini-lesson on wine and food matching. You’ll be a dinner party expert after this.

This tour is on foot but no need to worry about fitness because everything is fairly close together and the terrain is flat and easy to navigate.

All your drinks are included and it’s not just wine on this trip, you have the chance to try some locally-made gin and craft beer too.

Cost: from $185

The Martinborough winery experience doesn’t need to finish when the wineries close, instead, you can choose to stay in one of the winery accommodations in Martinborough.

A wine tour is the easiest way to explore the Martinborough wineries and is perfect for anyone short on time or without a sober driver on hand.
