Yoga Adventure Retreats For World Travelers: The Travel Yogi

Our Yoga Teachers

We’ve hand-selected yoga teachers from around the world to guide you during your Yoga Adventure Retreat. Meet our teachers below, connect with them on social media, and join The Travel Yogi community.

VIEW TRAVEL YOGI TEACHERS

We’re yoga adventure retreats (not just yoga retreats) .

As yogis, we understand the importance of balance in life. We understand the discipline and benefits of a regular yoga practice. We also know we are here on this beautiful blue planet to truly live—especially when we travel. When we travel, it is clear that the heart wants what the heart wants—joy, connection, experience, consciousness, and adventure. We eat well, drink well, laugh, love, and try new things.

If you are looking for a vegan-only, stay-by-the-hotel-pool kind of trip with a million chaturangas, we aren’t your people (and that’s totally okay). If you are looking for a balanced, carefully curated travel adventure experience, then we’re your people. If you are seeking adventure with a dose of wellness and consideration of sustainability and regeneration in local environments, we’re your people.

What Is a Yoga Adventure Retreat?

Search “yoga retreats” and you’ll find a never-ending stream of glossy infinity pools and perfect scorpion poses. You’ll see sleek bodies and solitary meditation practices in remote locations. But, if you look a little closer, you’ll notice something is missing. You’ll notice the sterility, the travel-bubble lack of immersion, and maybe even forced authenticity

The Travel Yogi puts adventure and experience first. We consciously craft travel for adventurers seeking  immersive experiences . The Travel Yogi way is new languages mixed with laughter, clinking glasses of  old-world wine , and navigating adventure flows (or actually  navigating white water in Patagonia  if that is your thing).

We are complex and curious humans seeking realness. And yeah, we are tired of the gloss: we don’t want that gloss. We want the condensation on windows from bus rides to wild places, dust on our eyelashes from a bike ride to lunch, and sand in our swimsuits from surfing waves on a quiet beach. Let’s say that again: we are tired of the gloss and we want real.

Yoga can mix with luxury seamlessly, especially in retreats like these

By Elite Traveler

Woman practicing yoga on a beach at sunset

If city life is weighing you down, a gateway is the right choice. A seaside destination is an option, but if relaxation is the main objective, there is nothing more stress-relieving than a yoga retreat .

Not only they are the best way to unwind and find a little bit of peace, but they also allow their guests to learn managing techniques to face the stress and mundanity of everyday life, being taught by the best yoga instructors. In addition, most of these yoga retreats are in some of the most suggestive and picturesque areas of the world, they are meant to be a tool to reset and rewind from all points of view.

What is better than regulating your breathing while on a green grass terrace overlooking a beautiful sunset? Or a secluded stone temple surrounded by water? From the bright blue Aegan Sea to the tropical rainforests of Indonesia, the true yogic design and culture of these retreats promise to give every visitor an unimaginable yoga experience. Elite Traveler collated a list of the best yoga retreats in the world, perfect to reconnect with your inner goddess.

Ananda Spa, Northern India

Nestled in the Himalayas and overlooking the holy city of Rishikesh and the beautiful Ganga River Valley is Ananda Spa . The luxurious Northern India resort has an array of yoga packages for you to choose from, as well as the opportunity to talk to one of their residential experts for a bespoke yoga experience personally tailored. The retreat’s philosophy is based on the balance of nature, the ways of the Universe and how the elements affected not just one’s physical but also their mental well-being, concepts that derive from Ancient India’s history. With balance and harmony at the front of its mind, Ananda aims to ensure balance and rejuvenation upon the end of the experience.

A typical day at Ananda starts at 7.15am, with traditional Hatha yoga to prepare the body, followed by nature walks. Later in the morning, there are group morning stretches alongside a talk from the Visiting Master. Around 11am, the spa is available for treatments and the afternoon is characterised by various possibilities, such as cooking classes or a gym session with a personal trainer. After the 5pm’s meditation and Pranayama sessions, there is another educative talk about the principles of life.

Post-Covid rejuvenation, ayurvedic rejuvenation, yogic detox, stress management and even sleep management are all part of the myriad of programmes Ananda offers. Each package goes from five to seven nights, and each day focuses on Hatha, Raja and Kriya yoga.

As soon as you arrive, you will be greeted with a fitness watch to track your daily activities, and also a switch-off button, which entails all electronic devices to be taken and locked away for the duration of the stay. Guests can reside in varied kinds of rooms, but the Stephanie Deluxe Suite is by far the most comforting one.

COMO Parrot Cay is located in the northern Caribbean, comprised of eight main islands and over 40 smaller cays, the resort being one. COMO Parrot Cay is a Caribbean island resort in Turks and Caicos, a secluded resort with its own array of private and pristine beaches.

The resort itself is made up of a bigger building with coral-ping roofing, on raised ground and it includes many types of accommodation. One wing includes 14 Ocean Facing rooms, five COMO suites and 26 garden-view rooms. They all have terraces and are separated from the beach by a tennis court.

Closer to the beach are the houses and villas, corresponding to six one-bedroom beach houses with plunge pools and three family beach houses, alongside five two-bedroom beach houses, two two-bedroom beach villas, one three-bedroom COMO villa and the unique three-bedroom Island Villa .

Holistic therapy, yoga, diving and world-class cuisine are what you will get at this luxury yoga retreat . It comes as little surprise that the world’s best yoga instructors flock here to teach, including Helena Brower and Erich Schiffmann. As part of its 5-star luxury retreat, the COMO offers six complimentary yoga classes a day, healthy dishes and a full menu of Ayurveda treatments. In particular, the resort’s award-winning Shambhala Retreat offers yoga, pilates and relaxed spa treatments.

Blue Osa, Costa Rica

As the website describes, Blue Osa in Costa Rica was born as a safe place where guests can seek answers to life’s biggest questions and sink into a deeper understanding of who they are.

The peculiarity of this resort is that it’s a fully eco-friendly establishment , meaning that it uses mostly solar power for electricity and only locally-sourced food to feed the guests with the aim to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible. Yoga lovers are welcomed to year-round yoga retreats, which include farm-to-table meals, miles of secluded beach and full access to the Blue Osa Eco Spa, which is chemical-free.

Alongside an open-air studio overlooking a private beach and tropical gardens, Blue Osa also offers long nature walks through the labyrinth, many shrines to reconnect with spirituality and even zen experiences.

Silver Island Yoga, Greece

The yoga space on the Silver Island resort in Greece, at sunset

Guests of Silver Island practice yoga twice a day / Image: Silver Island

Silver Island is a privately owned island in the Aegan Sea, offering a unique and exclusive Gree Yoga experience. This private-island yoga retreat has everything you need to leave the modern world behind.

Its one-week-long retreats run from Sunday through to Saturday from mid-April to mid-October, following an all-inclusive set-up. The retreat itself is very small, with only six rooms to choose from. This is because Silver Island used to be a family home up until 2013 when sisters Claire and Lissa Christie started the retreat in what used to be their childhood house. It is a “self-sustainable, off-grid, untouched and grounded in nature retreat, in tune to the essence of the island”.

Each of the Greek yoga retreats on the island of Oreoi is taught by hand-picked teachers, twice a day. Guests also have the freedom to meditate and journal their thoughts throughout their stay. Traditional styles of yoga such as Hatha and Vinyasa are offered as well as more restorative Yin style flows. Depending on the retreat, the focus may vary from meditational to Ayurvedic themes.

The locally sourced food is vegetarian, providing the visitors with the healthiest Mediterranean vegetables Greece has to offer. In addition, guests can choose from an array of activities like kayaking and painting.

Bagus Jati, Indonesia

Bagus Jati is a full-size resort, with luxurious villas with private pools, restaurants, cafes and even a waterfall. In particular, the superior chalet is the biggest accommodation on site, and the restaurant Paon Bali offers locally-sourced traditional Balinese cuisine.

The resort, located in the middle of Bali’s tropical rainforest, promises guests a peaceful sanctuary with only exotic birds and fluttering butterflies to be heard during their stay. Their yoga retreats run from three to five nights including one yoga class a day, private yoga lessons, fresh meals and vegetable juices alongside customized Ayurvedic treatments.

An open-air yoga studio is terraced amid the jungle giving guests a full view of the magical atmosphere and the rare opportunity to be at one with nature.

This is one of the best yoga retreats in Greece because of how unique it is. It’s also on one of my absolute favorite islands – Crete. This one is for all my fellow women. You will join together with other women and celebrate the feminine energy, and learn about the signature energies that accompany each phase of your cycle.

The exact program or style may change depending on the needs of the group. It is a really custom and intuitive experience. You’ll begin your day with meditation, breathwork, and dance, and end with a yoga session tailored to your menstrual cycle. There are also twice-daily women’s circles where you share stories, learn how to access your feminine intuition, and tap into abundance, creativity, and love.

An entire free day is built in to explore the area or go on an excursion. If you choose this retreat I encourage you to stay longer to see more of Crete. Yoga on Crete also offers Iyengar retreats and workshops.

Yes, hiking! Yoga on Kos offers retreats along with other activities such as hiking, cycling, and boating. The beautiful island of Kos is located just off the coast of Turkey and is part of the Dodecanese island chain. Kos is famous for its beaches and historical landmarks.

The island is also a popular destination for cyclists and you will have the opportunity to explore the island by bike on this retreat if you’d like. Included excursions include a visit to thermal baths, two hikes, and a sunset meditation at a historical landmark. This is a great retreat for anyone wanting to explore more.

Note: If you are a more advanced yogi this retreat may seem too beginner/basic. You also might want to bring your own mat if you value quality mats 🙂

7. 5-Day Restore and Reset Retreat for Body and Mind

Location: Paiania, GR

yoga retreat travel agency

This retreat is located in Paiania, on the mainland just outside of Athens. Yoga Skyros offers several programs including yoga teacher training, yoga therapy, and yoga intensives. Particularly of note is their “7 Days Pure Yoga Retreat” where you practice yoga for four hours a day in a variety of styles. If you are looking for a yoga-heavy retreat to improve your skills you might be interested in this one.

For the purpose of this blog, I chose to feature their Restore and Reset retreat because it is a partially customized program based on an initial assessment and incorporates other healing therapies. For example, based on your needs you may receive massage, nutrition guidance, kinesiology treatments, or other remedies.

This a well-rounded wellness retreat program for people who are overworked stressed, and in need of rehabilitation. There is time built in daily to explore as well.

8. 7-Day Luxury Hiking and Yoga Retreat

Located on the northeastern side of the mainland, Nefeli Nine offers a handful of retreat options. From a weekend refresh to a full week of yoga and hiking or kayaking, and massage, you’ll be sure to leave having eaten well and recreated a lot! The 7-day hiking and yoga retreat is their signature retreat but I encourage you to take a look at some of their other offerings as well.

Nefeli Nine focuses on holistic well-being and has based its program on the Blue Zone habits (these are the 5 zones in the world where people are the healthiest and live the longest). They incorporate a Blue Zone-inspired diet, daily stress management practices, exercise, and opportunities to balance and reset.

!! 9. 5-Days of Yoga at a Luxury Island Villa

Style: Vinyasa, Yin, Power Yoga, Restorative Yoga

yoga retreat travel agency

If the more fitness-oriented retreat on Santorini sounds too much, consider this 5-day retreat that offers a more gentle schedule. You’ll practice meditation each morning followed by Vinyasa and close the day with a more gentle restorative flow.

In between, you have lots of excursion options with the group or on your own! Cynthia, the instructor, is known for her patience and attention to each individual. Several of her clients have attended many of her retreats around the world. A great retreat option to meet people and explore Santorini – you will love where you are staying!

The south of Crete is incredible. It’s peaceful and mountainous, and the beaches are world-class. Everyone raves about the instructor, Angelos, and leaves feeling recharged and reconnected. Located on the absolutely beautiful island of Milos, this retreat truly has it all. You’ll start each day with a meditation practice followed by a fitness class (HIIT or strength training), and close each day out with a harmonizing yoga practice. In between, you will be served two authentic Greek meals and have time to explore.

One massage and one sailing adventure are included in this retreat, as well as a designated beach day. The accommodations are also stunning. This list is in no particular order but if I’m being honest this would be at the top of my list of best yoga retreats in Greece. I’m thinking about how I can join next year as I type this.

15. 7-Day Yoga and Sailing Retreat

Location: Kefalonia, GR

Style: Hatha, Restorative, Yin, Vinyasa, Ashtanga

Frequency: Year-round!

yoga retreat travel agency

Are you a fan of the sea and sea-focused activities? If so then this might be the retreat for you. Spend 6 nights sailing around Kefalonia Island on a luxury catamaran and practice yoga on a different lagoon beach every day!

You will have a private chef, skipper, and instructor on board with you. There are private and shared cabin options. Spend your day paddle boarding, hanging at the beach, or exploring coastal towns.

Reasons To Go on a Greek Yoga Retreat

yoga retreat travel agency

Retreats are practices in self-care. They are an opportunity to connect to yourself. They invite change and renew inspiration. Retreats are often transformative and healing.

A yoga retreat, specifically, will teach you how to quiet your mind and build awareness of your body. Leave all of your worries and distractions at home and turn inwards.

Now a yoga retreat in Greece, specifically, is the ultimate gift to the self. There are truly endless reasons to go on a retreat in Greece, including its history in healing and wellness. But beyond that, there are 5 reasons that I like to call the 5 C’s.

The 5 C’s:

Mainland Greece sees hot, dry summers but also long and cold winters. The islands, however, see long sunny summers with clear skies and mild winters. The islands get a light breeze from the sea that is energizing and cooling in the summer. The weather is truly dreamy most of the year.

You will find some of the world’s best beaches in the Greek Islands. There is variation from island to island but they all feature crystal clear water and undeniable natural beauty.

“Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food” – Hippocrates. Greece is the epicenter of the Mediterranean diet. The food is TO DIE FOR. The cuisine is a huge part of the culture in Greece and is founded on the foods that are plentiful to the region, specifically olive oil, wine, legumes, honey, and fish. Greece is also home to 1 of the 5 Blue Zones in the world (where people live the longest and are the healthiest) and this is partly attributed to their diet of mostly plants, some fish, daily glasses of wine, and copious amounts of olive oil.

Greeks value community and family above all. It is an essential piece of their wellness. They look at life and self objectively, accept the nature of things and let go of what is beyond their control (generally speaking of course). The ancient Greeks understood the mind-body connection and you can see this alive and well in modern Greek culture today. The people are known for their amazing hospitality. They are kind and welcoming and everyone moves slower and more intentionally. Prepare to be on island time, and to make some lasting connections 🙂

Once you make it to Greece, it’s quite affordable. The more popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos can be VERY expensive but if you stay off the beaten path food costs and lodging are reasonable if not rather delightful compared to some other Mediterranean vacation destinations.

yoga retreat travel agency

Personally speaking – September. The crowds are starting to thin, allowing you more opportunity to connect with locals and have a more authentic experience. The weather is also a couple of degrees cooler than the hottest months of summer.

That being said, really anytime between May and October is nice and most of the yoga retreats on the islands are offered during this time. The skies are typically clear and there is a light (sometimes strong) breeze from the Aegean Sea, known as the meltemi. The meltemi winds blow from mid-May to mid-September, are strongest in the afternoon and typically die down at night. During the day they provide the perfect summer breeze, and in the evening they can be a bit chilly.

There are so many islands to choose from you can find both solitude and amazing weather anytime between May and October – just bring a light sweater for the evenings 🙂

The Wrap-Up: 15 Dreamy Yoga Retreats in Greece

I’ve narrowed the best yoga retreats in Greece down for you based on location, cuisine, reviews, programs, and accommodations, now you have to do the hard job of choosing between the 15!

Whichever path you choose I can almost guarantee you’ll have an amazing experience. How could you not – practicing mindfulness and yoga throughout your day, wandering the quaint Greek alleys, and ending your day sharing a meal with new friends overlooking the Aagean sea?

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
