Embark on this Baltic States tour that packs an incredible array of distinct culture and tradition into a remarkably compact geography. The capitals of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are study in contrasts with towering cathedrals, art-nouveau architecture and medieval monuments among the treats in store. Combined with the unique landscapes, languages and temperaments of each region, this 9-day excursion is perfect for anyone seeking a truly memorable experience.

Begin in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. Small in population (at just over half a million residents) this capital is cosmopolitan but never stuffy and features nearly 1,500 historic buildings in its Old Town centre. A former site of Gestapo headquarters; in Vilnius tour the KGB Museum and marvel at towers and church structures that date from the 14th century. The nearby town of Trakai has its own charms including a picturesque lakeside location and two historic castles.

En route to Riga stop, in what was briefly Latvia's capital during the interwar period, Kaunas. Truly stunning for its architectural marvels from another era, and located at the confluence of Lithuania's largest rivers, the town features a 17th century Baroque Town Hall in its centre. Then it's on to the Hill of Crosses, a stirring testament to devout Christians and their sacrifice during German and Soviet occupation.

Modern culture aficionados will find much to digest in Riga, the largest of the three Baltic capitals, and a highlight of our Baltic States tour. Restoration to pristine condition of its many faded art-nouveau buildings makes for a truly exhilarating experience. In fact there's an art-nouveau museum located in a painstakingly restored apartment.

That, alongside a thriving culinary and arts scene with plenty to offer discerning travellers, marks Riga as a particularly delightful city. History buffs to will be satisfied with a number of attractions including St. Peter's Church (with an elevator to the top) and the impressive Riga Cathedral in Dome Square.

Outside town, time is allotted for a visit to an enormous traditional market as well as sightseeing along the embankments that tower over the town, with excellent views and a stop at the Latvian Ethnographic Museum included in the itinerary.

Estonia beckons and on the way stop in the resort town of Parmu before arrival in the Black Sea, harbour capital, Tallinn. With a UNESCO-listed Old Town, ancient churches and medieval streetscapes the city is ridiculously photogenic. Among attractions during a guided walking tour are Alexander Nesvsky Cathedral, the 13th century Toompea Castle site and Dominican Monastery.

Departure for this Baltic States tour is via Helsinki, with a walking tour of the vibrant Finnish city included.

Day 1 Arrive in Vilnius Arrival in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. In 1994 the Old Town of Vilnius was included on UNESCO's World Heritage list. With its diverse architecture and colourful history, Vilnius is a cosmopolitan place, though with just 543,000 inhabitants, it has an almost village-like atmosphere, making it an easy place to get to know. Overnight in Vilnius. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Vilnius & Trakai This morning we have a walking tour of Vilnius. Sweden, Poland, France and Russia have all ruled Vilnius in the past, and today we will witness the influences that this has had on this beautiful city. The Old Town is one of the largest in Europe, with nearly 1,500 historic buildings of note built over several centuries creating a splendid blend of many different architectural styles. Our walking tour will take us to Cathedral Square in the heart of the city. Inside the cathedral we see the famous chapel of Saint Kazimieras, considered an architectural gem. Rising in the distance behind Cathedral Square is the Gedimino Tower, once part of the 14th century defense system. We will also see the baroque Peter and Paul Church, originally built in the 14th century. The Gates of Dawn, on the eastern side of the Old Town, were one of the original nine gates into the city. The original Gothic defensive wall was once over 2 km (1.5 miles) long. From this remaining gate we will walk down through the streets of the old town. Nearby is the Jewish Quarter, with its cobblestone lanes and hidden courtyards. While in Vilnius we'll also visit the KGB Museum (aka the Museum of Genocide Victims). For Lithuanians, the KGB Museum symbolises the 50-year-long Soviet occupation. During World War II it was the site of Gestapo headquarters and later of the KGB. The museum building is as intact as it was in 1991, when the KGB left the premises. You will see KGB rooms authentically furnished and secret KGB spying equipment. After a full morning and a break for lunch, we we'll travel to Trakai, a former capital of Lithuania. The town, situated on the shores of several lakes, has two prominent castles built to fend off German knights in the 14th century.* Trakai is famous for its population of Kara-Kalpak people. Brought to Trakai from the Crimean Peninsula by the Grand Duke Vytautas in the late 14th century, the Kara-Kalpak still hold their Jewish religious services in the yellow Kinessa, built in 1812. Our tour here includes a visit to the Trakai Historical Museum, housed within the main rooms of Trakai's island castle. * PLEASE NOTE that the castle will be under renovation until 2027, during which time specific parts of the complex will have limited access and certain parts will be closed on a rotational basis. Parts of the exterior will also be under scaffolding. Though it is unpredictable, should a visit become impractical, we may substitute the visit with soemthing else of interest in the city or the surrounds. Overnight in Vilnius. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Vilnius - Siauliai, Lithuania - Rundale Palace, Lativia - Riga Today we trave to the Hill of Crosses, located just north of the small industrial city of Siauliai. Siauliai is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center, and a city of famous cultural traditions and legends. On a small hill stand thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and act as a compelling resistance memorial to the German and Soviet occupation. Today newlyweds often come here after their wedding ceremony to ask for God's blessing. We then proceed to the border and continue on to Riga stopping at Rundale Palace in time for lunch. We then visit the palace, an architectural pearl created by architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, designer of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. Construction of the palace was completed only in 1768 and now it is a magnificent sample of baroque style with elements of classicism, with crystal chandeliers, rich stucco moulding, silk wallpaper, collection of paintings, and frescoes by Italian artists. This is the place where leaders of the state, wishing to receive high guests with really regal honours, hosted the royal couple from Denmark when they visited in Latvia. We continue to Riga for dinner and overnight. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Riga: City Tour Today we will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town of Riga, getting us to some of the top sights and giving us a real feel for the city. Over the last decade Riga has been going through a restoration phase, revitalizing many of its faded art nouveau buildings into pristine gems. While these buildings can be found throughout the central downtown area, the best place to see them is in a neighbourhood of streets centered around Alberta Street. Riga literally has hundreds of buildings in this flamboyant style as it experienced a period of unprecedented wealth at the beginning of the 20th century when art nouveau was all the rage in Europe. While exploring this part of the city we will visit the Art Nouveau Museum, which is a completely restored art nouveau apartment. Our walk will include a stop at the mighty Freedom Monument, dedicated to those who fought for Latvia’s independence. We will pass by the Latvian National Opera House as well as the Powder Tower. Kalku Street is the main 'semi-pedestrian' thoroughfare, and it slices straight through Old Town leading us to Livu Square, created after the destruction caused by World War II. Today this is one of the Old Town’s most bright and cheerful corners. Bastion Hill Park runs along the northeastern edge of the city. Once the old city’s fortifications, Bastion Hill was replaced with this romantic park full of gardens, canals, and ornate bridges. The park makes a great transition space between downtown Riga and the historic center. Working our way through the backstreets of the Old Town we come to a fixture of Riga’s skyline, St. Peter’s Church. The tallest church in the city, this large Gothic church dates back to 1209, although little of the original church is actually left. Another of Riga’s enchanting city squares is the Dome Square which sits out below the impressive Riga Cathedral. Throughout the city of Riga there are a lot of exceptionally well-preserved buildings, but the Three Brothers are quite unique in that they are the oldest residential buildings in the city. These three adjoining buildings date from between the 15th to 17th centuries and are home to local craftsmen. We will pass by Riga Castle, which today houses the offices of the Latvian president. One of the last remaining segments of the city’s defenses is the Swedish Gate, a small gateway through what looks like a row of traditional residences. We will stop at the Town Hall Square to see the iconic House of the Blackheads where we admire the stunning design of its facade. Built for members of a merchant guild known as the Blackheads in the 14th Century, this is one of Riga’s most picturesque landmarks. This afternoon is yours free to explore. Overnight in Riga. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Riga: City Touring Today we will get to some of the landmarks which lie outside the city’s Old Town, including a drive through modern Riga. We will start with a visit to the massive Central Market. This visit will help to give you a sense of what local life is like in today's Riga. This bustling indoor & outdoor market focuses on several large 1920s pavilions and the area around them. Here we discover plenty of local Latvian goods, from meats and fish to loads of other locally grown produce. We continue with a panoramic drive around Riga that will take in some of the most famous sights. Our route along the embankment of the River Daugava provides us with wonderful views of the city, and we will drive through the modern part of the city where we see the University Building, the Academy of Arts and the central train station. Along Riga’s riverfront we will come to the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum which details the city’s history of the Holocaust. Set inside an outdoor courtyard, this museum details what happened to the local Jewish population during the city’s Nazi occupation. The exhibits here focus on individuals' stories and photographs. Built during Latvia’s period under Soviet rule, the towering figure of the Latvian Academy of Sciences is hard to miss. Here we will take the elevator up to its observation deck for great views of Riga with the church tower visible amongst the skyline. You will have some free time this afternoon before our evening meal. Overnight in Riga. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Riga, Latvia - Tallinn, Estonia This morning we depart Riga for Tallinn, making a lunch stop in Parnu, "the Summer Capital of Estonia." From the middle of the 19th century, Parnu developed as a resort town with its good beaches and relatively good weather. During the Soviet era, Parnu's guesthouses, inns and hotels were converted to sanatoria. We continue to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Historically, Tallinn has been attacked, sacked, razed and pillaged on numerous occasions. Although extensively bombed by Soviet air forces during the latter stages of World War II, much of the medieval Old Town still retains its charm. The Tallinn Old Town became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997. Overnight in Tallinn. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Tallinn: City Tour Today we have a guided WALKING tour of this important Baltic Sea harbour city. We begin with a visit to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built in the nineteenth century. The cathedral dominates the Lossi Plats, and is an imposing testament to the Russian imperialist influence. We also visit the Dominican Monastery, which played an important role in bringing Christianity to Estonia. We have the opportunity to visit the Toompea Castle site, a 13th century castle where the current parliament of Estonia holds its sessions. In the immediate area we will also visit the Toomkirik Lutheran cathedral, founded in 1233, with its impressive carved tombs inside. This afternoon you will have some free time to stroll through the picturesque Old Town with its jumble of medieval buildings, turrets and walls. The market in town is also very colourful and lively. Overnight in Tallinn. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Tallinn, Estonia - Helsinki, Finland Today we take a fast ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki (HAVE YOUR PASSPORTS HANDY!). Helsinki is situated at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands, perfectly placed between its two great trading cousins, Stockholm and Moscow. From a European perspective, Helsinki is relatively young (450 years), yet it is Finland's sixth-oldest town. The Swedes, who extended their empire into Finland in 1155, founded the city of 'Helsingfors' (the name still used by the Swedes) in 1550 when King Gustav Vasa needed a site for a strategic, competitively placed trading port. It languished as a coastal backwater until Imperialist Russia invaded in 1809. On arrival we'll have a walking orientation tour of Helsinki. Overnight in Helsinki. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Helsinki: City Tour Affectionately known as the 'Daughter of the Baltic', Helsinki is sited at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands, perfectly placed between its two great trading cousins, Stockholm and Moscow. In a European perspective, Helsinki is relatively young (450 years), yet it is Finland's sixth-oldest town. Today we will enjoy a comprehensive walking tour taking in the most important and interesting parts of Helsinki, such as the historical centre and the diplomatic quarters, the Presidential Palace, City Hall, the Parliament building, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. We stop at Senate Square, and, if possible, Temppeliaukio Church. During the afternoon you can explore the busy market place or the many souvenir shops close to the harbour. Fans of modern architecture and/or libraries may enjoy a visit to the Oodi Helsinki Library, which occupies a hugely significant site in central Helsinki: facing the steps of the Finnish parliament building. The upper surface of the canopy structure has been used to create a large public terrace, from which one can look directly over the square to the steps and main entrance of parliament. The terrace doubles the amount of public outdoor space provided for library visitors and creates a new destination where people can meet and observe the city below. Overnight in Helsinki. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Departure from Helsinki Today we depart from Helsinki. HYVAA MATKAA!! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Though we will have a couple of full bus days there are plenty of stops of interest. Hydrofoil crossing to Finland. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. Useful information to know before visiting Baltic countries

Where are the baltic countries.

Where are the Baltic countries?

The Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, are situated in Northern Europe, along the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Estonia is to the north, Latvia in the middle, and Lithuania to the south, collectively creating the Baltic region.

These nations form a distinctive region with shared historical ties and a rich cultural heritage. The geographical proximity to the Baltic Sea has significantly influenced the development of these nations over the centuries.

Are Baltics worth visiting?

Are Baltics worth visiting?

Yes, exploring the Baltic countries is definitely worth it. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania offer a unique blend of rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cultures.

From the medieval charm of Tallinn’s Old Town to the Art Nouveau architecture of Riga and the serene natural beauty of Vilnius, the Baltics provide an amazing travel experience.

Whether you’re interested in historical sites, cultural traditions, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the region, the Baltics have something to offer for every traveler.

Is it safe to travel to the Baltic states?

Is it safe to travel to the Baltic states?

Generally, the Baltic states are considered safe for travelers. They have low crime rates compared to many other European countries, however, like any travel destination, it’s essential to exercise common safety precautions.

While no place is entirely without risk, the Baltic countries are one of the safest places in Europe for travelers who take basic precautions and stay informed about their surroundings. Which makes it a great destination for solo female travelers as well.

Are Baltic countries cheap?

Are Baltic countries cheap?

The Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, are often considered more budget-friendly compared to many Western European destinations. While prices may vary depending on specific locations and your personal spending habits, the Baltics generally offer good value for money.

Accommodation, food, and transportation costs in the Baltic states are often more affordable than in Western Europe. Local markets and eateries can provide cost-effective dining options, and public transportation is usually reasonably priced.

I have to mention that over the years the Baltics have raised the prices, so if you visited these countries a couple of years ago, you might be surprised. However, you can certainly plan a budget trip to Baltic countries.

That being said, the level of perceived affordability can vary from person to person, and factors like the specific cities you visit, the type of accommodation you choose, and your lifestyle preferences will influence your overall expenses.

How to get around Baltic countries?

How to get around Baltic countries?

Getting around the Baltic countries is relatively easy, and there are various transportation options to choose from. Let’s dive in and explore the ways to get around Baltic countries.

Public Transportation: Each capital city—Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius—has well-developed public transportation systems, including buses and trams. Public transport is an affordable and efficient way to explore these cities.

Buses: Intercity buses connect major towns and cities in the Baltic region. Several bus companies operate, providing a cost-effective means of traveling between countries and exploring different regions.

Trains: The Baltic countries have a rail network that connects major cities. Trains are a comfortable option for traveling between capitals and other notable destinations. Check the schedules and book tickets in advance for long-distance journeys.

Car Rental: Renting a car is a convenient option if you want to explore rural areas or have more flexibility in your itinerary. However, you won’t need a car to follow this Baltic itinerary.

Taxis: Taxis are available in urban areas, and ride-sharing services like Bolt operate in some cities. Taxis are a convenient option for short distances or when public transportation is less practical.

If you are planning to follow this Baltic States travel itinerary, you will use the bus to move between Baltic capitals. Make sure you check Flixbus for the most affordable prices and purchase your ticket in advance. Other great alternatives include EcoLines and Lux Express.

When you finally reach the Baltic capitals, you will be walking most of the time. Occasionally, you can hop on a public transport or book a Bolt ride. And to explore the countries beyond the capital, you will be able to use buses or trains. Or join some of the best tours.

However, you don’t have to worry about these things, because this 10-day Baltic itinerary will include all these details and all the information on how to travel between Baltic states.

When is the best time to visit Baltic countries?

When is the best time to visit Baltic countries?

The best time to visit the Baltic countries—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—largely depends on your preferences for weather and activities. Here’s a general overview.

Summer (June to August)

This is the peak tourist season when the weather is generally mild and pleasant. Summer brings longer days, allowing for more exploration and outdoor activities. However, popular tourist destinations can be more crowded during this time.

If you ask my personal preference, summer is the best time to explore the Baltics and make the most of your trip.

Spring (April to May) and Fall (September to October)

These shoulder seasons offer milder temperatures, fewer tourists, and the added beauty of blooming flowers in spring or colorful foliage in fall. It’s a good compromise between pleasant weather and avoiding the crowds.

The fall foliage was one of my favorite seasons growing up in Latvia, however, you will have a high chance of rain and a cloudy sky.

RELATED : Why You Should Visit Latvia in Autumn?

Winter (November to March)

Winter can be cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. If you enjoy Christmas markets and winter sports like skiing, this could be an excellent time to visit, especially in Lithuania. However, many outdoor attractions may be less accessible during this period.

Chasing winter wonderland in the Baltics is a truly unique experience and overall, it is more affordable compared to Scandinavian winter destinations.

How many days in the Baltic countries?

How many days in the Baltic countries?

The ideal duration for your visit to the Baltic countries depends on the depth of exploration you desire and your travel preferences. However, the Baltic itinerary for first-timers should consist of at least 10 days.

During the 10 days in the Baltics, you will be able to discover the essence of the Baltic capitals and even pick one of the best day trips to see beyond the big cities.

I have to say that this is a relatively easy Baltic itinerary for 10 days because I want you to enjoy your time not just chase sights. Also, it is very flexible, so you can easily exclude the things that you don’t want to see or visit and add other alternatives.

What is the best route to visit Baltic countries?

What is the best route to visit Baltic countries?

The best route to visit the Baltic countries often depends on your starting point and personal preferences. However, if you’re looking for a general route that covers the highlights in a logical sequence, you might consider the following.

Start in Tallinn, explore the Estonian capital and beyond. Head south to Riga, spend a few of days there, and then make a day trip to see more of Latvia. Conclude your trip with a stop in Vilnius and plan a short visit to Trakai.

You can also do the same route and start from Vilnius instead. If you have to fly back from your arrival point, plan an extra day on the route, which is not ideal, but totally doable.

The ultimate Baltic itinerary for 10 days

This is a quick overview of your Baltic itinerary for 10 days.

  • 2 days in Tallinn
  • Day trip from Tallinn
  • 2 days in Riga (with an optional extra day)
  • Day trip from Riga
  • 2 days in Vilnius
  • Day trip from Vilnius to Trakai.

If you are wondering how to see the best of the Baltic in 10 days, you will need to plan at least 3 day trips – one from each capital. But if you want to see other beautiful places to visit in the Baltics, you can always add an extra day.

Also, I suggest you plan a day trip, so you don’t have to worry about checking out and checking in to a different hotel every day and drag your luggage with you. This way you can base yourself in each Baltic capital for 3 days and plan a short trip from there.

As you can see there is an extra day for Riga, however, you can use it for an additional day trip from Tallinn or Riga, depending on your interests. Or you can simply enjoy a chill day in the middle of your trip. If not, this trip to the Baltics will take 9 days, but I wanted to keep it flexible.

This is truly the best way to spend 10 days in the Baltics. But let’s dive deeper and discover more details of your Baltic vacation.

Optional extra day in Riga

10 day baltic tour

If you still want to explore Riga and discover all the hidden gems in the Latvian capital, here is a list of places you don’t want to miss.

Head to the left side of Daugava and enjoy the views on your back. I suggest you cross Vanšu Bridge and make a stop at the Vanšu Bridge Viewpoint.

After head to Agenskalns where you will find a vibrant market and the picturesque Holy Trinity Church located in Meža iela 2. Nearby, you will also find the National Library of Latvia, which is a gem of modern architecture.

You can end your day with a sunset over Riga panorama and visit AB Dambis for some of the best views of Riga.

If you prefer spending a day in nature, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia is a good idea to take a glimpse at the old Latvian way of life. Another hot spot to enjoy some sunny days in Latvia is Mežaparks. This beautiful modern park is one of the most loved by the locals.

If these locations don’t excite you, feel free to skip to the next day.

Day 4 – pick the day trip from Riga

10 day baltic tour

Just like Tallinn, Riga offers some amazing day trip options because of its small size and convenient location. While Tallinn day trips are great for nature lovers, Latvia offers some great cityscapes to historical towns, and charming villages.

Click here to discover the best day trips from Riga and decide the next stop of your Baltic States travel itinerary. This article features some of the best cities to visit in the Baltics, however, it includes some great spots in nature as well.

Where to stay in Riga?

Riga is not a big city and you shouldn’t have any problems moving around, but there are some tips to make your weekend in Riga even more sufficient.

The old town (Vecrīga) is the most beautiful area of Riga. The city center (Centrs) is a big area in the heart of Riga, but I don’t advise you to go anywhere after Lāčplēša Street. The area near the Freedom Monument is great and very practical.

If you are looking at the map, you see that Riga is divided by a river called Daugava. And it might look close, but I don’t advise staying on the other side of Daugava. It can be trafficked and not very pleasant to walk.

10 day baltic tour

Vilnius, the southernmost capital, is a city of contrasts and layers. Its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, unfolds with narrow alleys, baroque churches, and the iconic Gediminas’ Tower overlooking the city.

Beyond its historical treasures, Vilnius is a city that embraces modernity while cherishing its cultural roots. The Užupis district, often referred to as the “Republic of Užupis,” is a bohemian neighborhood that celebrates art, creativity, and free expression.

The culinary scene in Vilnius is a delightful reflection of the city’s diverse influences and traditions. From traditional Lithuanian dishes like “cepelinai” and “kugelis” to international cuisine, Vilnius offers a variety of dining experiences to suit every palate.

Just like the other Baltic capitals, you will need 2 days to see the best in Vilnius, and here are some of the best places that you absolutely have to see.

2 days in Vilnius itinerary

Day 3 – day trip from Vilnius to Trakai

10 day baltic tour

While there are many beautiful sights around Lithuania, a day trip from Vilnius to Trakai is a must during your Baltic itinerary for 10 days. It is a wonderful choice to explore the historical and picturesque Trakai Castle and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

The centerpiece of Trakai is the majestic Trakai Island Castle, a masterpiece of medieval architecture set on an island in Lake Galve. This iconic fortress serves as the residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and a symbol of the country’s medieval heritage.

Beyond the castle, Trakai town itself is a quaint and welcoming place. Visitors can stroll the charming streets, lined with traditional wooden houses, and perhaps stop in local cafes to try traditional Lithuanian delicacies.

Užutrakis Manor Estate, located near Trakai, further enriches the region’s appeal. The estate, with its elegant mansion and beautifully landscaped gardens, offers a glimpse into the life of Lithuania’s nobility. The expansive park, designed by renowned French and Italian architects, provides a peaceful retreat.

How to reach Trakai from Vilnius?

You can easily reach Trakai by using public transport since the buses regularly operate between Vilnius and Trakai. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes. The ticket will cost you 3 euro and you can buy it at the station.

Another option is to train. Trains depart regularly from Vilnius Railway Station, and the journey takes around 30 minutes. The price is 2.80 euros and you can purchase your ticket at the station.

Taxi is also a popular choice to visit Trakai from Vilnius if you have limited time. The ride will cost you approximately 20 euros depending on the traffic.

Finally, there are plenty of companies that organize daily trips from Vilnius to Trakai. This one is one of the best-rated tours and it offers a professional guide to learn more about Trakai.

Where to stay in Vilnius?

Here is a list of some of the best hotels in Vilnius for every budget and style. If you don’t like any of these options, I highly recommend that you pick a hotel near Old Town, so you can make the most of your limited time in the Lithuanian capital.

Luxury: Relais & Châteaux Stikliai Hotel

10 day baltic tour

If you want to make your stay in Vilnius special, book Relais & Châteaux Stikliai Hotel. This 5-star hotel in Vilnius is housed in a historic building with Baroque and Gothic features and is located in the heart of the Lithuanian capital. The hotel boasts a sauna, an indoor pool, and a fitness center.

Mid-range: Courtyard by Marriott Vilnius City Center

10 day baltic tour

If you are looking for quality accommodation without squandering your finances, make sure you check the Courtyard by Marriott Vilnius City Center. Its prime location and modern & stylish rooms are perfect for exploring Vilnius in style. The rich breakfast is also worth mentioning.

Affordable: Domus Maria

10 day baltic tour

Domus Maria is definitely the best budget choice to stay in Vilnius. It is located in a former monastery in the Old Town and it’s perfect to visit Vilnius city on foot. The rooms are simple but cozy and welcoming and the value for the money is simply unbeatable.

More things that you should know before visiting the Baltics

What language do they speak in the baltics.

What language do they speak in the Baltics?

The Baltic countries each have their own distinct languages.

The official language of Estonia is Estonian, which belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family and it is closely related to Finnish. The official language of Latvia is Latvian, a Baltic language that is part of the Indo-European language family. Lithuanian is the official language of Lithuania. It is a Baltic language and one of the oldest languages in the Indo-European language family that is still spoken.

As a Latvian, I can say that all these languages are very different and unfortunately, we are not able to understand each other. There are some similarities between Latvian and Lithuanian, but nothing remotely close to having an actual conversation.

As a foreigner visiting the Baltics, you will notice that the older generation speaks fluent Russian and the younger generation can communicate pretty well in English. I am sure you won’t have any problems with the language during your trip, but I recommend you learn some basic phrases and surprise the locals.

What is the local food in the Baltics?

What is the local food in the Baltics?

The culinary scene in the Baltic countries is a delightful fusion of traditional flavors, influenced by the region’s history, climate, and agricultural practices. Each country has its unique dishes and culinary traditions, however, you will notice a lot of similarities.

One notable dish of Estonian cuisine is “Mulgipuder”. It is a dish of mashed potatoes and groats and is a hearty staple, often served with bacon. Fish, particularly herring, plays a significant role, and “kiluvoileib,” an open-faced sandwich with smoked or marinated herring, is a popular choice.

Vana Tallinn is the most famous local drink and a great souvenir to bring home.

While in Latvia you should try “grey peas with bacon”, which is a traditional Latvian dish. “Latvian rye bread” is a staple, and garlic bread can be found in every local restaurant. But layered rye bread is a popular dessert that you will need to try.

Sklandrausis is a vegetable pie (or tart) made from rye pastry that is filled with a mixture of carrots and potatoes and eaten cold. Latvia’s proximity to the Baltic Sea influences its seafood offerings, with smoked fish, especially sprats, being a common delicacy.

And just like Vana Tallinn, Riga Black Balsam is a must-try when visiting Latvia.

Lithuanian national dish is “Cepelinai” – large potato dumplings stuffed with meat, curd, or mushrooms. “Kugelis,” a potato pudding baked with bacon, is a beloved comfort food. “Šaltibarščiai,” a cold beet soup, is a refreshing and vibrant option, especially during the warmer months.

Susan – 2023 September 17 :

All aspects of the tour were professionally managed. The organizational skills of the company to coordinate language needs, to assist in the processes of booking and responding to questions, and to provide high quality senior tour guides and local expert guides is exemplary. Bravo! I very much enjoyed learning about the capitals we visited and appreciate how knowledgeable the guides were and how friendly and genuine they were. I would highly recommend Baltic Tours for the quality of the programs and staff. Accomodations ranged from excellent to good. The bus service was excellent. The drivers professional and courteous. I look forward to another Baltic Tours trip.

Dave – 2023 September 9 :

Me and my family have chosen this tour and we were so amazed by the places we saw and competent staff. I was speaking with Baltictours.com responsible people and I found the service of this travel agency to be excellent. They helped to choose the tour depends on our needs. Thank you Rasa and Iveta!

Keith – 2023 September 5 :

Baltic Metropoles is a good tour if you want to explore the east coast of Baltic sea. The guides presented the cities well and seemed that they know their stuff. Communication with Baltic tours was easy and staff there are honest. They’ve recommended to me, and Ireally recommend you to take several optional tours, especially one to Lahemma National Park. The nature there was stunning and you shouldn’t miss it. The tour is a good value for money deal, 5/5.

Dovila – 2023 July 11 :

The trip was awesome! The people in the major cities speak english very well and are really friendly. I’ve really enjoyed the cities, they have something special about them. The tour was carefully planned – we had just enough time to explore everything we wanted. The hotels are not the most expensive ones, however they were neat and comfortable. Would repeat this trip again!

The Perfect, Magical 10 Day Baltic Itinerary

View of Tallinn, Estonia

When I first visited the Baltic Countries, I felt like I was discovering some hidden gem. Here were three beautiful countries, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, not overtaken by tourism, boasting natural wonders and quaint cities, all for an affordable price. I had less than two weeks to explore all three countries. If you’re short on time as well, here is some information on the Baltics and the perfect 10 day Baltic itinerary.

Table of Contents

Map of the Baltic Countries

The Baltic states are wedged between the Baltic Sea to the west, and Russia to the east.

Estonia is the northernmost country. North of Estonia is the Gulf of Finland, with Finland (obviously) on the other side of the gulf.

Latvia is in the middle, and in addition to Russia, shares a border with Belarus.

Lithuania is the southernmost Baltic country, and only shares borders with Poland, Belarus, and the Baltic Sea.

History of the Baltics

Because of their location, the Baltic states have had a tumultuous history.

Numerous powers, including the Danes, Swedes, Poles, Germans, and Russians, tried to take over Latvia and Estonia because of their ports for centuries.

Lithuania used to hold a lot of territory in Europe until the 16th century when it became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

In the 18th century, Imperial Russia took control of all three countries. But, after the collapse of so many governments following World War I, all three countries got their independence in 1922.

But then, WWII happened in 1940, and the Baltic countries were under the control of the Soviet Union.

All three regained their independence in 1991. And are now part of the European Union.

Sources 1 , 2 , and 3

Most Lithuanians identify as Roman Catholic, around 3/4 of Latvians identified as Christian  , and in Estonia, over 50% of the population states no religion .

With that being said, Pagan roots do run deep in the Baltics. Lithuania was the last country in Europe to convert to Christianity.

Bear statue in Vilnius

More and more people in the Baltics are turning away from Christianity and embracing their Pagan roots. All three Baltic countries celebrate winter and summer solstice. People build bonfires, sing songs, and wear masks.

Folklore, singing, and dancing are also important in Baltic culture, as is a deep appreciation for nature. There are sacred groves in Estonia, graveyards dispersed among the forests in Latvia, and our guide in Lithuania told stories of spirits in little wooded corners in Vilnius.

Graveyard in Estonian forest

Official Languages

Each country speaks a different language, Estonians speak Estonian. A language greatly influenced by the Finnish language.

Tallinn Old Town decorated for the holidays

Lithuanians speak Lithuanian, and Latvians speak Latvian. Both are Indo-European languages.

Lithuanian is the closest language on the planet to Sanskrit. Which is pretty neat.

English is widely spoken by people, especially younger people, in cities. In more rural areas you may have a harder time finding people who speak English. Most everyone at tourist destinations can speak a little bit of English.

Are the Baltics Safe?

Girl in swing in Kaunus

All three countries are extremely safe. According to the US Department of State Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia all have a travel advisory of Level 1 (the lowest level).

Of course, normal precautions should be taken. And more crime takes place near bus stations, train stations, and popular tourist spots. Most crime involves pickpocketing or robbery. This is the same in almost every European, nay, every city around the world.

Be smart, take normal precautions, and you will be fine.

The Best Time to Visit Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia

Because of their geographical location, Baltic countries have very short days in the winter, and longer days during the summer.

This makes summer a great time to visit the Baltic countries. May-September will give you great weather, even though you may see a few more tourists. If you visit during summer, expect mild temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 21 degrees centigrade.

Snow covered building in Kaunus

The winters are long, and cold. We visited all three countries during the winter, and the snow and Christmas markets were quite magical. But, it was dark by 3:30-4 pm. We spent a lot of time wandering in darkness. And it was  cold.   The temperature frequently drops below 30 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees centigrade. Make sure you bring hats, scarves, gloves, and warm clothes if you visit during the winter.

10 day baltic tour

Unless you specifically want to see the sites in winter (which are quite spectacular) come to the Baltics during the summer to get the most out of the daylight!

Baltic Currency and Cost

All three countries use the Euro as their official currency, which makes traveling between them a breeze.

Use a travel credit card with no international transaction fees. Most places accept credit cards, including shops and restaurants. Some local farmers markets and such will only take cash.

Christmas market in Helsinki

Use an ATM to take out money, they are plentiful in cities throughout the Baltics. If your bank charges a fee, take out large sums of money, that way you don’t pay as many fees. Make sure to let your bank know you will be traveling before you leave your home country!

As far as the costs, everything in the Baltics is relatively cheap, from food to hotels. Lithuania is perhaps the cheapest country, and Estonia the most expensive. Either way, a trip to these places will not break the bank.

Getting There

If you’re flying, you will want to fly into a major city to save yourself some time and money. I recommend flying into Vilnius, Lithuania, or Tallinn, Estonia. This way, you can complete your Baltic itinerary from north to south, or south to north.

My Baltic itinerary, will focus on a north to south itinerary, starting in Tallinn and ending in Vilnius.

Remember, you can always find a larger city in Europe and then take a train or a cheap flight into either Tallinn or Vilnius. I recommend using the hopper app to locate cheap flights or  Skyscanner.

Getting Around the Baltics

Map of the Baltics

I highly recommend renting a car. It is very easy to drive in the Baltics, and a car rental will allow you to see more of the countryside. We rented a car for 10 days and it costs about 200-275 euros.

Make sure you choose hotels with parking included so you don’t pay extra fees! Also ensure you have an international drivers license. No one ever asked to see ours, but just in case, have one with you if you choose to rent a car.

If you do not want to rent a car, you can take a bus.  Ecolines   and Lux Express  are two bus lines that operate in the Baltics. Prices are around 20 euros between cities.

You can also take a train. There is no direct train from Tallinn to Riga, but you can get there with one stop.

Or, you can fly between cities using Baltic Air.

Getting Around the Cities

In most of these places, walking will be more than sufficient.

Public transport such as busses, trolleybuses, and trams are available in all three cities.

Uber is prevalent in Tallinn and Vilnius and is very affordable and convenient. Uber is not available, however, in Riga. But, you can download the app Bolt, very similar to Uber, and use that instead.

Streetcar in Helsinki

Don’t Forget the Beaches

Although this Baltic itinerary focuses mainly on the cities and interior of the Baltic countries, don’t forget about the wonderful Baltic sea that runs the coast of all three countries.

If you visit during the summer especially, make sure to add a day trip to your Baltic itinerary to see a gorgeous beach. Here are 7 of the most beautiful Baltic beaches for you to get some ideas!

My Suggestions for Your 10 Day Baltic Itinerary

To make the most out of your Baltic itinerary, I suggest you spend about 1-2 days in each capital city (Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius). This will give you enough time to see most of the major sites.

After your days in the city, take 1 day trip in each country.

Countries are most than just their cities. And there are some pretty awesome day trip suggestions on this Baltic itinerary!

10 Day Baltic Itinerary Day 1-4: Tallinn

Tallin, Estonia from the viewpoint

Start your Baltic Itinerary in Tallinn (note, you can also start this Baltic itinerary in Vilnius and work your way north, just reverse the cities!) When you first arrive in Estonia, you’ll probably think that you’ve arrived in Finland. The nordic vibe is strong here, and the minimalist architecture of the houses and buildings outside of the city center will have you imagining Scandinavia.

I found the people to be quite reserved and a bit blunt, but still polite.

When you arrive in Estonia, grab an Uber to your hotel. You will most likely be arriving late to the city.

Where to Stay in Tallinn

Tallinn Old Town

Try to stay as close to the Old Town as your budget will allow.

Tallinn Old Town

We stayed a bit outside of the center because of our budget. We got ubers into the city center for 5 or 6 euros. So it was not a big deal.

Grab a bite to eat when you arrive. I recommend asking the front desk for a good place to eat close to your hotel. After your meal, take a stroll through the beautiful Old Town of Tallinn.

On your first full day of Tallinn, take a walking tour. I recommend the Tallinn in a Nutshell Walking Tour or T allinn Free Walking Tour.

Side street in Tallinn

Both tours will give you a great history of Estonia, and cover the major sites of the city including:

  • Nevsky Cathedral
  • St. Mary’s Church
  • Town Hall Square
  • Freedom Square
  • City Wall Towers

Make sure you tip your guide!

Old Town in Tallinn Estonia

The tours are usually about 2-3 hours long, combine that with breakfast and lunch and you’re looking at a half-day activity. We took some time after our tour to wander around more back streets in Tallinn.

The Times We Had Sign

Our tour led us to The Times We Had Sign on the viewing platform. If for some reason they don’t, here is a great blog that will tell you how to arrive at the sign. Make sure you snag a picture and take in the view!

The Times We Had Sign

Christmas Markets (Mid November through First Week in January)

Tallinn Christmas market

If you go in late December or early January (like we did) make sure you check out the Tallinn Christmas Market in Tallinn’s Town Hall Square.

Girl in front of Tallinn Christmas market

It is magical. You’ll get to sample great food, wine, treats, and shop for souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry as you wander between the booths.

Shopping and Wandering

Turg in Tallinn

The Balti Jaama Turg Market is a must-do in the city! Don’t miss the Turg market. This market is wonderful for grabbing some food and doing a little bit of shopping!

Go to Telliskivi Creative City for a bit of cool street art.

Street art in Tallinn

There are also some awesome bars and restaurants to explore in this part of town!

Inside a shopping section in Tallinn's Creative Town

Sauna and spa culture is readily apparent in Tallinn. If you visit during the cold winter months, this is a great way to warm up!

Check out this website for some of the spas in Tallinn.

Our Favorite restaurant in Tallinn is F-Hoone. Our favorite part of the meal was getting to break the creme brulee.

Meal at F-Hoone

The Creative City has tons of cool restaurants and bars. Wander around and find your favorite!

Seaplane Harbour is a popular museum in Tallinn. The museum houses old submarines and ships. The KGB museum explains the history of the KGB in Estonia, make sure you book a tour in advance!

Other museums include Kumu art museum, Niguliste Museum, Peter the Great House Museum, Kiek in de Kok and Bastion Passages Museum, Marzipan Gallery, and many more.

Glehn Park and Estonian Open Air Museum

If you want to see a few sites just outside the city, these two attractions are good options. Getting to the Estonian Open Air Museum by car is quite easy with a GPS. You can also take bus 21 or 21B to get to the museum.

The Estonian Open Air Museum  depicts life on a farm during the 18th to 20th centuries. It was closed when we went but we still got a little bit of a view over the fence.

Estonian Open Air Museum

We also drove to Glehn Park to admire some statues. Bus 10, 20, or 20A will get you to the park.

You can take the Glehn Park Loop which is about 1.5 miles long. The statues are quite neat.

10 day baltic tour

The main statue is a depiction of Kalevipoeg, a hero in Estonian Folklore.

Optional Day Trip to Helsinki

Around two days is sufficient to see the main sites and explore a bit of Tallinn. Take another day and get out of the city on a day trip!

10 day baltic tour

We highly recommend taking a ferry to Helsinki! And spending the day in another country. We took the first ferry out, and the second to last ferry back (the next day had a long drive so we didn’t want to get back too late.) Check all of the ferry times and get your tickets here.

You can take a quick Uber to the dock from your hotel, make sure to arrive a bit early.

The ride takes about 2.5 hours, and it is  rough.

I was sweating and seasick for the entire trip. The boat has no seasick medication on board (believe me, my boyfriend checked.) If you do get sick easily, a lower deck is better for you.

Once you arrive in Helsinki, prepare for the prices. It is expensive. We had granola bars as snacks and split one meal in the city.

10 day baltic tour

Here are some must-see sites in Helsinki:

  • Senate Square
  • Helsinki Cathedral
  • Market Square
  • Suomenlinna

Esplanadi

Suomenlinna can only be reached by a 15-minute ferry ride. The island is quite beautiful, and worth visiting if you come here for your day trip.

Ferry to Suomenlinna

If you go during the winter you can do a fun activity and hunt for gnomes all over the island. You get a prize if you find all of them! Check in at the visitor’s center for a map before you begin wandering.

Other Options for Day Trips

If Helsinki doesn’t appeal to you for a day trip, check out these other options for day trips from Tallinn.

10 Day Baltic Itinerary Day 5-7: Riga

Next on your Baltic itinerary is Riga.

Riga Old Town

I found Riga to be even more beautiful than Tallinn, but I know a lot of people disagree.

Side street in Riga

The city felt a bit rougher, a bit more real. There were a lot more shops and restaurants and bars in the city. And people seemed a lot friendlier, shopkeepers went out of their way to make conversation with us.

Depending on your mode of transportation, you will probably get into Riga in the afternoon or evening. Download the Bolt app for a ride from the airport. Just like in Tallinn, don’t feel like you have to rush, take a walk around the Old Town, stretch your legs, and grab a bite to eat.

Where to Stay in Riga

Riga Old Town Map

Try to get a hotel close to the Old Town.

Riga Old Town

We stayed in the Gogol Park Hotel, which was about a 15-minute walk to the center. We didn’t mind the walk, and the hotel was very nice, with free parking

See the Main Sites

You can take another free walking tour  or wander on your own to see the main sites.

This walking tour company is pretty neat because there are two options, one option will show you the main areas in Riga, and the other tour will lead you to “the real Riga” You will go to places like the Riga Central Market, Moscow district, and Warehouse District.

Take Some Awesome Pictures in Vecriga

Side Street in Riga

Wander around this UNESCO World Heritage Site and admire all of the beautiful homes, little shops, and cobblestoned streets. The best time to see the side streets of Riga Old Town is first thing in the morning. The streets are blissfully empty and you feel like you’re in a fairytale with all of the beautiful colored buildings and cute nooks and crannies and side streets.

Side street in Riga

Once you wander a bit, make your way to some of the famous sites. If you didn’t have the chance to take a walking tour, that is.

Here is a wonderful self-paced tour that will allow you to see most of the main sites in the city!

10 day baltic tour

  • Riga Castle
  • Three Brothers
  • Riga Cathedral
  • Riga Town Hall Square
  • House of the Black Heads
  • St. Peter’s Church
  • Bremen Town Musicians
  • Freedom Monument
  • Riga Nativity of Christ Cathedral

Bremen Town Musicians

If you still have some time, check out one of the numerous museums in the city. My favorites include the KGB building, Musee Art Nouveau, and the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum.

Others include Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum, Riga Motormuseum, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, and Latvian National Museum of Art, and so many more.

Christmas Market

The Christmas markets in Riga are also quite beautiful. There are markets at Cathedral Square, Kalnciema Quarter, Esplanade Park, Riga Central Market, and Livu Laukums.

Christmas market in Riga

Livu Laukums was the only Christmas market open when we visited. There was food, trinkets, and jewelry, and clothing.

Christmas market in Riga

Optional Day trip to Kemeri National Park

Before we left for Lithuania, we decided we wanted to see a bit of the countryside on the Great Kemari bog walk in Kemeri National Park.

Kemari Bog

The Loop itself is about 3.1 miles. The scenery is quite startling. There is not a lot of vegetation or plant diversity, but it is still so beautiful.

If you want to make a whole day of the bog, or don’t have a car, check out this company  that promises a 7-hour tour including the bog and other natural wonders around Latvia.

Kemari Bog

Options for Day Trips

If Kemeri National Park isn’t your thing, check out these other options for day trips from Riga.

10 Day Baltic Itinerary Day 8-10: Vilnius

The last few days of your Baltic itinerary will be spent in Vilnius.

Street in Vilnius Old Town

Lithuania holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps because on my mom’s side, my grandmother’s parents, and grandfather’s grandparents, were both from Lithuania.

My 23 and me results declare me to be about 30% Lithuanian. It seems strange that in another life, I may have been raised in Lithuania.

The people in Lithuania are strong, with big eyes and strong features. They are quite reserved, and can appear standoffish, but I found them to be super helpful, and nice when I asked a question or made polite conversation.

Arriving in Vilnius

10 day baltic tour

We decided to take a bus from the airport to the Old Town. It only costs 1 euro (you can pay the driver when you get on) and takes you right to the old town. Take bus #88 from the airport and the stop is  Aušros  vartai  or Trakų stops.

You can also call an Uber. I would avoid the taxis but if you have to take one, agree on a price beforehand.

Where to Stay

Try to stay in the Old Town of Vilnius.

Old Town Vilnius map

We stayed right near the Gate of Dawn in a former monastery called the Domus Maria Hotel. It was quite a nice experience.

Vilnius Free Walking Tour

Free walking tour in Vilnius

We started our time in Vilnius with a free walking tour. This company  has two tour options. The Old Town Tour and the Undiscovered Tour. We took the Old Town tour since it was our first time in the city.

St. Bernadine Church

From their website, the Old Town Tour promises the following sites:

  •  Cathedral Square and its surroundings
  • Vilnius University
  • The presidential palace
  • The Town Hall and its surroundings
  • The Republic of Užupis
  • St Anne’s and Bernardine churches, the gothic corner of Vilnius

10 day baltic tour

The tour takes about 2.5 hours, remember to tip your guide! If you decide to skip the walking tour, make sure you don’t miss the sites above!

Cathedral Square during the Christmas Markets

Other Sites to See

Don’t miss the  Gate of Dawn . Legend has it that the painting of the Virgin Mary comes to the protection of the people of Lithuania when they need her.

Gate of Dawn

If you want a great view of the city, hike up to the  Three Cross Memorial . You will get an amazing, panoramic view of the whole city. The hike to  Gediminas tower  is also nice, but the view is not quite as good.

The  Church of St. Peter and St. Paul  is touted as one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the world. The inside of the church is filled with over 2,000 statues!

If you’re interested in visiting churches, there is an abundance of them in the city, click  here  to see 28 churches in Vilnius Old Town.

Museums in Vilnius

I am not a huge fan of museums. But the Museum of Illusions does look pretty interesting! Enjoy illusions of all kinds as you wander through this funky museum.

Here  is a list of all the museums you can enjoy in Vilnius!

Pilies Street

Visit Pilies street for some arts and crafts, and maybe even a local festival. The street is beautiful with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

Cathedral Square, City Hall, and Bernardinai Gardens Christmas Markets

Vilnius Christmas market

These Christmas markets go until Epiphany, so even if you visit Vilnius the first week of January the markets will be open.

Vilnius Christmas market

The decorations are festive, the food is great, and there are lots of goods to buy in these markets.

Vilnius Christmas market

The Republic of Uzupis

Spend some more time in Uzupis. The Republic started as a joke and is now considered to be the smallest republic in the world. It covers about 1 square km, but there is a president, government, and constitution.

Uzupis

The constitution hangs on the wall and includes clauses like “everyone has the right to be happy” and “a dog has a right to be a dog.”

It is an artist’ community where you can see interactive artwork, and interesting sculptures.

Piano installation by a River

People seem happy here, and very loving.

10 day baltic tour

Optional Day trips

Hill of Crosses

Trakai Castle

This attraction is located about 45 minutes outside of Vilnius. To get here you can drive, take a bus, or take a train. Check Rome2Rio  to see bus numbers and train options!

Perhaps the most popular day trip from Vilnius is Trakai Castle. There is a beautiful park, and you can see the castle on the island.

Panamune Road and Castles

If you love castles, think about taking a drive on Panamune Road. You will stop at Raudondvaris, Raudone, and Panemune castle. You may need a car for this one, but some tour companies add the castle to other popular itineraries!

Hill of Crosses

When we visited Lithuania, we did Hills of Crosses, Ninth Fort, Kaunus, and the Devils Museum all in one day.

The Hill of Crosses is by far my favorite. The atmosphere is melancholy. And the chimes of rosary beads in the wind is quite haunting.

Hill of Crosses

I highly recommend seeing the Hill of Crosses when you are in Lithuania. You can check out Viator   for tour options from Vilnius if you do not have a car.

Ninth Fort is right outside the village of Kaunus. It is a memorial for the Jews who lost their lives here during several mass shootings in 1941. Tour groups that offer trips to Kaunus usually stop by Ninth Fort, so even if you don’t have a car you can still see this place.

Ninth Fort Statue

You can see the sculpture, the memorial to all of the Jews who died. You can also visit the museum, which covers history about the Nazi and Soviet occupation in Lithuania.

Ninth Fort Memorial Plaque

Kaunus/Devil’s Museum

Kaunus is a cool little city that was dressed up prettily with a Christmas market when we visited.

Christmas market in Kaunus

Wander around the square, find some great street art, and grab a bite to eat.

Street art in Kaunus

I recommend Etno Dvaras for some traditional Lithuanian food.

10 day baltic tour

We had traditional Lithuanian food, and it was warm and filling!

Cheese and Honey

While you’re in Kaunus stop by the Devil’s museum. You’ll experience a bit of folklore from around the world.

Devil's museum

Witches Hill

Lithuania was the last pagan country in all of Europe. This sculpture garden shows off beautiful creatures, fairy beings, and witches from Lithuanian folklore. If you go on a longer, guided tour this may be included, otherwise you need a car.

Grutas Park

Another sculpture garden, this one with Soviet-era statues.

There is a small entrance fee to the park. If you go on a longer, guided tour this may be included, otherwise you need a car.

Other Optional Day Trips

If these options don’t appeal to you, check out these other ideas for day trips from Vilnius.

Final Thoughts on this 10 Day Baltic Itinerary

The Baltic countries are so wonderful, and filled with so much to do. I hope you enjoy your trip to this magical part of the world!

Baltic Tour: Itinerary for Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius (10 days) in the Baltics

Baltic-tour-Riga

Are you considering where to travel next? You don’t need to look any further. Baltic States, located in the north-eastern Europe, on the shore of Baltic Sea, are perfect getaway destinations. These three small countries can be visited within a week but we’d suggest spending at least 10 days there. This will let you see the UNESCO listed capitals, do some day trips to the surrounding nature and learn about their interesting history and traditions. Baltic States are still considered as off the beaten path destinations so get there before they get too crowded and overpriced. Book your Baltic tour now and get ready for a magical adventure.

Best Starting Point for Your Baltic Tour

Most people start their Baltic trip either in Vilnius or Tallinn. Both countries have relatively small airports but in terms of logistics, it would make the most sense. Riga has the biggest airport but that would make travelling through all three countries a bit more complicated. Alternatively Helsinki, in Finland, has great connections with the rest of the world and is only a 2h ferry ride from Tallinn. Helsinki also is worth a couple of nights stay so when checking flights, consider a stopover in Helsinki.

Down south, Warsaw, in Poland, could be replaced with flying out of/to Vilnius. It’s not that close to Vilnius but Warsaw is well connected and the city itself is worth a couple of nights stay. If you have more time and can’t find good flights to the Baltic States, it would make sense to extend your trip to either Helsinki & Warsaw or both. If you’re doing the Baltic States trip for 10 days, we’d suggest spending 3 nights in each capital.

Tallinn-old-town-tour

Travel to Estonia - Welcome Tallinn!

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a lively yet peaceful, photogenic and charming city full of wonderful sights and rich culture. A city that combines the modern world with ancient churches, medieval streetscapes and noble merchants’ houses. The UNESCO listed Old Town is one of the best preserved Hansaetic town centres in the world.

Once you arrive, head out to the old town and wander around the cobble stoned streets, narrow alleyways and charming courtyards. A stone’s throw away you’ll find the city’s business centre with modern towers, trendy bohemian neighbourhoods, manicured 18th-century park, promenades and sandy beaches.

In the evening check out some of the viewing platforms with beautiful views over Tallinn. If you have more energy we suggest climbing up St. Olaf’s Church where you can get a birds-eye view of the Old Town and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Finish the evening with a nice meal and a drink in one of the cosy restaurants in the old town. Read from our blog what are the best bars in Tallinn worth visiting.

estonia-tallinn-historic-center

Discover Tallinn Old Town

On your first full day we suggest doing Tallinn city tour with a local guide. That’s a great way to meet some local people, learn about the history, hear interesting stories and get a better understanding of the city you’re visiting.

In the afternoon we suggest you wander outside the old town and visit some surrounding areas. Kadriorg park and palace, built more than 300 years ago on the orders of Russian Tsar Peter the Great, is a must see. You can also find multiple museums in the park that are worth visiting.

Alternatively head to vibrant Telliskivi Creative City with numerous design shops, restaurants, and cultural institutions. Rotermann Quarter, a former industrial centre turned into one of the city’s most prominent oases of modern architecture or the newest addition to the city – Noblessner seafront quarter. A former submarine factory, now a modern urban space filled with galleries, design shops, a marina, and restaurants perfect for admiring the sunset.

All these places are great for an evening meal and drinks. Head to one of these places to put a nice end to your second day in Tallinn.

Baltic-States-Travel

Best Day Trips From Tallinn

Tallinn is a relatively small city so on your third day we suggest leaving the city behind and doing a small (half)day trip to the surrounding areas. Estonia’s pristine nature is waiting to be discovered. Head to Lahemaa National park for charming fishing villages, sandy beaches, picturesque bogs and historic manor houses.

If you’re a fan of Soviet history head to Paldiski and on the way there check out the Rummu Prison quarry. One of the most photographed places in Estonia, where half submerged buildings are visible in crystal clear light blue water.

If you want to get active while admiring the beautiful Estonian nature we suggest doing a bogshoe hiking tour. The bogs are places very dear to all Estonians and have been part of the culture for centuries. Therefore one mustn’t leave Estonia before visiting a bog. There’s no better way to visit a bog than on bogshoes. That way you can get to otherwise inaccessible places.

Gauja-National-park-Tour

Travel to Latvia - Welcome Riga!

It’s time to change one country to another and travel to Latvia and its capital Riga. Riga is a true architectural jewel. You can find churches from the city’s origins, medieval buildings, unique examples of Art Nouveau, as well as centuries old wooden architecture and modern architecture there. Riga’s Old Town and its surrounding city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although its old town helped the city achieve this status, it’s the Art Nouveau architecture that really sets the city apart from other European capitals.

Before arriving in Riga we suggest stopping at the Gauja National Park. This beautiful national park is great for nature lovers and anyone who’s interested in cultural and historic sights. Plenty of activities can be done in the park from hiking to biking. A visit to Cesis and Turaida castles are a must if you’re interested in medieval atmosphere and history. Visiting small producers and tasting their products are always an experience to remember. There are plenty of these around the national park. For amazing views take a cable car ride over Gauja River and for the adventurers, visiting the famous bob-sleigh track and trying out bob-sleighing (open on weekends) is a must.

In the afternoon, once you arrive in Riga, walk through the charming streets in the old town and get acquainted with this beautiful city. Finish the day with a nice dinner and drinks in the Old Town. Read from our blog what are some of the must try dishes of the Baltic States.

Riga-old-town-tour

Discover Riga Old Town

Next day we suggest you do a short city tour of Riga. Walk through the winding streets and cobbled alleys of Riga’s Old Town and discover the hidden past from 1201 all the way to the present day. This will be the perfect introduction to Riga and its people. Continue the tour to the famous Riga Central Market which is one of Europe’s largest markets covering 72 000m2, built from five zeppelin hangers left over from the First World War. After the tour you will have a chance to stay at the market to explore it more and to have lunch there. There’s a small food court there where you can try some local food or why don’t you buy some fresh fruit, bread, cheese and local delicacies and have a picnic near the river.

In the afternoon head to the Art Nouveau district. Alberta Street is a good place to start and you can also find the Art Nouveau Museum there. If you’d like to see the popular tourism objects from a different angle, take a scenic boat ride around the canals. You may also wish to catch a show at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet or join an organ concert at the Dome Cathedral.

In the evening head to Miera ielas Republic. This arts quarter has various cafes, bars, shops and other establishments. Occasionally the area hosts various arts and crafts fairs and festivals.

Kuldiga-Tour

Best Day Trips from Riga

Your Baltic vacation and trip to Latvia wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t escape Riga to enjoy some of the small towns in the surrounding areas. We could suggest a day tour to picturesque countryside and a true hidden gem, Kuldīga! Small and unique villages of Kurzeme all have their little twists. Wander around the quaint streets of the gorgeous historic centre of Kuldīga, visit the widest-stretching waterfall in Europe and have some free time to have lunch and explore the city on your own.

If you are not afraid of a long day, combine the visit to Kuldiga with a stop in Jurmala beach resort town. Although Jurmala is mostly known for its beach, there are plenty of other things to do around Jurmala. Jurmala Open-Air Museum is worth a visit, to learn about the fishermen’s work and life. Another must see is The Great Ķemeri Bog where you can walk along the boardwalks and admire this pristine nature. If you missed the bogs in Estonia, then this is your chance to visit one. Jurmala can also be done as a half day trip from Riga. It’s easy to get there by train or bus and even by bike.

Rundale-palace-and-garden-tour

Travel to Lithuania - Welcome Vilnius!

It’s time to travel to Lithuania and its capital Vilnius. This vibrant city is full of history, culture, art, quirky neighbourhoods and cool and happening bars and restaurants. The UNESCO listed Vilnius Old Town is one of the world’s largest surviving medieval old towns, full of Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, and Renaissance architecture.

Before arriving in Vilnius we suggest stopping at the baroque pearl, Rundale Palace where you can explore the palace and the gardens. The magnificent palace was built as a grand residence for the Duke of Courland and nowadays it’s a beautiful museum and one of the major tourist destinations in Latvia. After your stop there we suggest heading to the UNESCO listed pilgrimage site, Hill of Crosses in Lithuania.

Once you arrive in Vilnius, head out to the old town and walk around the city’s cobbled streets. For beautiful views of the city check out the Bell Tower of St. John’s Church or Gediminas Castle Tower. In the evening dine in one of the many restaurants in the old town. Vilnius has a great mixture of Lithuanian, Jewish, Polish, and Russian cultures, evident in the delicious food that can all be found in this vibrant city. You can find some great suggestions on our destinations page.

Vilnius-city-tour-cathedral-square

Discover Vilnius Old Town

Next day we suggest you do a short city tour of Vilnius with a local guide. Wander around the UNESCO recognised Old Town, filled with magnificent landmarks and have the chance to really get in touch with the vibrant culture of Vilnius. Have the local craft beer at our favourite cafe, try some Lithuanian specialities and fall in love with this fascinating city.

After your tour you will have some free time to explore Vilnius in more depth. Head out to Europe’s most creative community – the Republic of Užupis which has its own constitution and president. Visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights which was originally the KGB headquarters and prison, it was also the site of torture and execution, so some people might find the prison a little overwhelming. You may also wish to take a walk to reach places such as the Hill of Three Crosses or St Peter & St Paul’s Church – a white miracle of belief.

Trakai-Balloon-flight

Best Day Trips from Vilnius

Your trip to Lithuania wouldn’t be complete without exploring the beautiful Trakai. Located less than an hour’s drive from Vilnius, this is an easy and fun day trip to take. It’s your chance to leave the city’s hustle and bustle behind and explore more of Lithuania. Upon arrival explore the historic town and well preserved ruins of Trakai Castle, set on its own island in Lake Galvė. The view of the historic structure is straight out of a fairy tale. You can either visit the museum inside the castle or enjoy a boat ride around the island and the castle and admire the surrounding nature. Alternatively it’s possible to do a sunset or sunrise balloon flight over the castle and lakes. This is truly a memorable experience to do.

If you have more time and want to explore the Lithuanian countryside even further, head to Dargužiai community centre and learn about Lithuanian traditions by taking a hands-on workshop of old Lithuanian crafts. If you’re interested in the domestic life, work and traditions of Lithuanian peasants and city dwellers, head to Rumšiškės Ethnographic Museum .

Stunning Baltics End Warsaw Tour

Stunning Baltics End Warsaw

Travel means something different to all of us. Danielle and I have done it all. We have flown between 7 or 8 countries in Asia (most hard). We have hired a private driver between many countries (easy). We have taken organized group tours and we have completely traveled with no plan. We have used trains and boats. Europamundo is somewhere in the middle. We found them because they were the only company that could easily get us between the Baltic countries (trains, country buses and private cars were not an option). It turns out, I really like this option. These tours are like a multi-country hop on hop off bus. You can customize your countries 100%. In other words, you tell them where you want to visit and they will bounce you on and off buses to make it work [Removed in Moderation]. The buses are modern enough with recline, arm rests, tray tables and foot rests (no wifi or toilet). They stop every couple of hours and the included hotel are 4* quality. Here all the hotels have had spa facilities (it is the Baltics after all). Each city includes a short city tour (combo of bus and walking) and breakfast is always included, sometimes more meals and admission to attractions. For those looking for the ease of travel with some free time this company is worth considering. You should note - Our tour is English but this is a Spanish company so often we listen to the explanations on the bus in Spanish first, then English. Overall, I highly recommend this company for what you get! Clean, nicer-end accommodations and easy travel between locations.

The Best of Poland and The Baltics in 13 days (Guaranteed departure)

Hello, Baltic Tours! I am a little bit difficult type of person, I am traveling a lot but this tour was one of the most unusual and exclusive, I think because of the good guide and well-chosen locations. I was always thought, how people can see 4 different countries in approximately 13 days, but now I can say that it is possible. I just was not impressed by Mragowo in Poland. Everything else was great. Kansha.

This tour was absolutely fantastic. A great balance between cities and more slow-paced seaside towns, and included activities and free time for being as relaxed or active as you chose. Our guide Neyana was fantastic, with tons of energy and enthusiasm for the gorgeous places we visited and lots of suggestions for great places to eat and explore in our free time. Would highly recommend!

Great Bike Tour of the Baltics (fully guided from Vilnius to Tallinn 2024)

The group was small and we all became friends and continue to communicate even after our trip. The biking was pleasant and mostly on bike paths. The area was very historically interesting and our guide was amazing: he taught us so much of the history and also interesting things about all the things we passed and stopped to see. Hotels were perfectly adequate, and the food was better than I expected (I pictured beets, cabbage and potatoes, and while there was plenty of that, there were also wonderful salads and other dishes). The tour whet my appetite for more!

Helsinki to Warsaw Tour

Helsinki to Warsaw

Helsinki to Poland tour by Expat Explore was well organized. However, it is too rushed. Ideal would be to add two more days and spread it out a bit. Lot of walking, therefore very tiring and difficult to keep up with the pace even for the not so old, especially in bad weather conditions. The hotels were very good except for one which was average. Breakfast at hotels were very good. Included lunches and dinners were okay. The optional tours were not fabulous. The tour guide highly recommends them all, but I was disappointed with each of them. On the whole, a good tour but very rushed and tiring.

Capitals Journey of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia & Finland - 10 Days Tour

Capitals Journey of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia & Finland - 10 Days

The first part of the tour, from Vilnius to Riga was good. The tour programme was as marketed and the tour leader was informative. The dinner in Riga was good. Nevertheless, we had a new tour guide in Tallin and she only coverrd a half day programme. For the dinner somebody came and guide us to the Maikravh resto and left us alone to go back to hotel. As the hotel was quite a distance from the old town so we have to look for taxis by our own. The dinner was disappointed, we were the only guest in the keller restaurant and the food was aweful, let aline the way they served the dinner. It was served in a plate in which we had to share.. So it was not worth for the price we paid. The ferry trip was surprising as there was no information in advance about the ferry condition. It was aweful for us who dont have any experiences to take ferry. The programme in Tallinn and Helsinki was not as offered.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Baltic

The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.
Tour was fantastic. ILONA did a great job at keeping everyone together. He knowledge of history was outstanding. Hotels were perfect and all in or close to the city center. This was a great value foe the money. Lots of optional tours that you could or did not have to do, which I like.

10 day Baltic itinerary guide – From Lithuania to Finland

' src=

Tick off four unique new countries off The Baltic Sea by following this 10 day Baltic trip itinerary.  If you’re hoping to see one of the three Baltic countries then a one or two week itinerary is ideal for you.  Here’s the perfect 10 day Baltic itinerary for anyone who’s hoping to see  Lithuania,  Latvia, Estonia and even a bit of Helsinki, Finland.

Before heading jumping right in to the itinerary details, here’s a little information on the Baltic countries. The Baltic’s, as they are commonly known consist of three ex-Soviet former Nazi occupied countries that sit on the coast of the incredible Baltic Sea. All three of the Baltic countries, which are Lithuania,  Latvia and Estonia are very similar in history and heritage, but completely unique in culture and tradition. The Baltics area is the ideal region to visit if you’re looking for accessible European travel and are hoping to tick more than one destination off your travel bucket list.

Here are some basics for a two week Baltic itinerary:

  •  Average daily budget for one: €60
  • Best time to travel: Summer and spring
  • Transport: By bus
  • Recommended accommodation: Hostels and Airbnb
  • Recommended travel time: 7-14 days

Flights

The majority of European flights into The Baltics tend to fly to Riga, Latvia as it has the largest airport. Additionally, there are regular flights to Tallinn, Estonia and Vilnius, Lithuania along with some of the other larger cities in the region. Most budget airlines now fly in and out of the Baltics so the starting point of your trip shouldn’t matter. I’d aim to fly into Vilnius, Lithuania and out of Tallinn, Estonia or vice versa for ease of route planning; but flying in and out of Riga works too. For a budget flight expect to pay around €100- €200 return at the very most. There are bargains available and regular flights into the Baltic countries can be found for as little as €20-€60.

Arriving over land

Lux Express operates a bus service  from Warsaw, Poland into Vilnius Lithuania. Over land this is likely to be your best and the most sensible option without needing to obtain a Russian visa for Kaliningrad or a Belarusian visa to take the train from Poland through Belarus to Lithuania.

Arriving by sea

It is not uncommon for people to arrive in The Baltics on a cruise or ferry service over the Baltic sea, with the most popular entry point being Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city. Ferries leave regularly from  Helsinki, Finland. It roughly takes 3-4 hours and can be pretty choppy during the colder months.

10 day Baltic itinerary

Start point: Vilnius, Lithuania

End point: Tallinn, Estonia

Arrive in Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius on the 10 day Baltic itinerary guide | Vilnius Lith cover image

Arrive in the southernmost Baltic state of Lithuania. We arrived in Vilnius by bus from Warsaw, Poland. We had spent the first few days of our trip in Germany and then in Poland before heading to Lithuania. It’s very possible to do this journey before heading to the Baltic region as Europe travel within the Schengen zone is very simple for EU citizens and Schengen visa holders.

After a long day of travel we arrived in Vilnius eager to eat and sleep. We found our hostel (after a little confusion) down a road that had been completely blocked off for roadworks and maintenance. After a strange but exciting few minutes wandering around central Vilnius wondering if we were even in the correct country we eventually found the street of our hostel. We stayed at the popular ‘Jimmy Jumps House’ for 2 nights. Jimmy Jumps House is one of the well known party hostels in the Baltics. There are three that are famous in total but I’ll get on to that later. A dorm at Jimmy Jumps House dorm costs approximately €10 per night.

Day 2 & 3

Free walking tour and a pub crawl.

We woke up early around 9:00am Lithuania time to ensure we had the entire day to get our explore on. I hate arriving into a city and missing a perfectly good day due to being tired so we literally forced ourselves to get up. Jimmy Jumps House offers free waffles for breakfasts to all guests, which is ideal for anyone travelling the Baltics on a budget. The first thing we chose to do was get some more information about the free walking tour. Generally free walking tours are offered by locals across Europe and I highly recommend them. Is there any better way to get to know a city than through the eyes of a local? I think not.

The free walking tour leaves from the town hall at midday daily and can last for around 3 hours but it’s extremely informative and also quite fun. The tour guides are all employed by  ‘Vilnius with locals’ . The city of Vilnius is packed with incredible architecuture and history from World War Two and earlier. Vilnius has proud Pagan heritage that is explored during the walking tour along with the Vilnius Ghettos, where several thousand Lithuanian Jews sadly lived and died during World War Two.

It’s easy to get lost in a city like Vilnius that is so cute and quaint, but also has so much history! It’s recommended to leave at least a €5 tip when taking part in a free walking tour in the Baltic countries.

With the newfound knowledge of the city from the free walking tour, it’s easy to explore. We decided to check out a few bars and pubs and a few other notable buildings in the afternoon.

That evening we had booked onto Jimmy Jumps House pub crawl, an absolute must if you are staying in Vilnius – you don’t have to be staying at the hostel to take part and you get to see some super cool venues including a very odd soviet style club that’s almost like a club but also like the inside of a house. Very retro, think floral funky carpets.

Day 3 of the 10 day Baltic itinerary would also be spent exploring Vilnius and the small but edgy artist’s neighbourhood of Užupis. Learn about the history of Užupis, it has claimed its independence from Lithuania and is also a UNESCO world heritage site with its own law-like ten commandments. Truly fascinating stuff.

Also don’t forget to try out the beer snacks in Lithuania – deep friend garlic bread smothered in melted cheese. Get used to this snack too because you’ll be seeing it a lot more in Latvia and Estonia.

At the end of your final day in Vilnius take the bus to Riga, Latvia through Kaunus if you’d like to see an extra city in Lithuania as part of your ten day Baltic itinerary.

Alternatively, spend one night in the coastal town of Klaipeda. Note that this is only recommended in the summer months. So depending on when you travel to the Baltic region, add Klaipeda to your ten day itinerary for the Baltics.

Arrive in Riga, Latvia

Beautiful Riga, a boat swimming through the waterway in this 10 day itinerary

The next country on my ten day Baltics itinerary is Latvia, with the capital of Riga being our first stop.

We had booked an Airbnb in Riga and it was one of those cool self-service ones. We were staying across the bridge from the historic old town. The location is known as a student area called Āgenskalns. We liked this area due to being right on the edge of a large gorgeous park that we could spend some time in. But if I was staying in Riga again I’d spend some time in the city centre of the old town in one of the more upbeat hostels.

As I mentioned earlier there are three big party hostels in the Baltics, one in each country. No ten day Baltics itinerary would be complete without a night in each of these notoriously fun hostels. The big party hostel in Riga, Latvia is The Naughty Squirrel and there’s a definite chance you’ll see some familiar faces from your Vilnius pub crawl there. Many people travelling the Baltics on a ten day itinerary choose to stay in all of these hostels.

Day 5 and 6

The old town of riga and the coast.

Coast

Get to know the old town – it’s stunning. There’s such a noticeable café culture in Riga, everyone sits out in the sun enjoying a beer or beer snack and the city itself is constantly alive in summer with the buzz of tourists in all forms. There’s a lot of wide green space in Riga and the parks are some the best places to just chill out and enjoy the weather.

Take a free walking tour from the old town and explore some of the suburbs of Riga. The local guide will share with you all the best places to eat and drink. We took this tour which lasts about 2-3 hours and goes through Riga’s world famous market. We managed to find out some great restaurants through the tour guide and ended up eating at Street Burger on both the nights we spent in Riga. Great value and proper tasty food with veggie options! Food with a drink (alcoholic) is roughly €7-10.

After spending the day on an adventure of what felt like the whole of Riga, we decided to check out a few local bars. Riga old town is the best for this as there are so many places to sit outside and drink. It gets cold in early spring but heaters and blankets are almost always provided for us chilly tourists. Beware of the stag do’s during your Baltics itineraries, many British and European tourist like to use the Baltic countries as stag do destinations and can often be known for being less than polite. Did someone say rowdy?

Day 6 should be spent on the coast. We took the train from Riga to the coast which costs €4-6. Jurmala is the name of the stop, it’s a famous costal resort in Latvia and is often known for it’s popularity with Russian tourists. Spend either the day or night in Jurmala, because hotels and accommodationscan be pricier than staying in Riga.

Travel to Tallinn, Estonia by bus

Take the popular Lux Express bus to Tallinn, Estonia this is the best way of getting around during your ten day Baltic itinerary. They are cheap and all come with free wifi and entertainment. They also do free coffee but I wouldn’t recommend it! Each of the Baltic capital cities Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn have a main bus station that Lux Express operates out of. Lux Express is very efficient especially if you are travelling on a budget.

Once you have arrived in Tallinn via the Lux Express bus, head straight to  The Monk’s Bunk party hostel. Upon arrival you’ll be greeted with a shot of ‘Black Balsam’ – a spirit native to the Baltic region and known give lethal hangovers if too much is consumed. You’ll also be asked to sign up for the nightly beer pong tournament like we were. I’m actually a decent beer pong player; my team mate (boyfriend) on the other hand is not. This is just one example of the fun things you can get up to whilst staying in a party hostel in the Baltic countries.

Spend your first day exploring the old town of Tallinn. It’s pricey but budget gems can be found. Take part in The Monk’s Bunk pub crawl and games nights. We were fortunate enough to meet a great group of people whilst travelling the Baltics due to hostels like The Monk’s Bunk.

Get to know Tallinn

A_market_place_in_the_historical_old_town_of_Tallinn_Estonia

Get to know Tallinn’s beauty and history be walking the medieval looking streets and climbing to the top of the bell tower. As Tallinn sits on the coast of the Baltic Sea, you can spend part of your ten day Baltic countries itinerary enjoying the simplicity of a beach day.

Take the bus from the main city of Tallinn expect to pay around €3 for the twenty minute journey. The bus stop/station is underground. I would recommend picking up one of the free ‘With Locals maps’ available at most hostels in Tallinn or the tourist information centre. We asked the reception at The Monk’s Bunk hostel to mark town the best beaches in Tallinn in addition to the neighbouring bus stops and the stations as it is very difficult to find. We also ended up asking for directions from some locals.

The With Locals maps are available in all of the Baltic countries and are completely free. It’s definitely worth grabbing one from each of the Baltic States you visit as they have top tips and recommended bars, restaurants and activities to do.

Take the bus from Tallinn to one of the close beaches and you will not be disappointed. The soft yellow sands compliment the clear Baltic Sea and many of the beaches in Tallinn are framed by woodlands making the scenery perfect. Take your camera and enjoy the city of Tallinn skyline from the beach.

Day 9 and 10

Head to helsinki.

Boats can be boarded from Tallinn to Helsinki, and tourists travelling this region often choose to head to Scandinavia for a day adventure. Alternatively if you plan on travelling north for loner why not try Russia? Ensure you have a visa first as Russia is not part of the Schengen agreement.

There you have it, the best way to spend ten or more days travelling through the Baltic capitals of the Baltic countries! Looking to see more of Europe? Check out my Prague , Budapest and many more itineraries here .

BREAKING NEWS

No injuries reported after tractor-trailer crash on I-81N in Montgomery County

Historic garden week gives you the chance to see four breathtaking lakewood homes, the tour kicks off saturday, april 27 at 10 a.m..

Keshia Lynn , Multimedia Journalist

ROANOKE, Va. – You can have the chance to tour four beautiful homes in the Lakewood neighborhood as part of Roanoke’s Historic Garden Week , which takes place tomorrow starting at 10 a.m.

The homes that are featured were built from 1913 to the 1950s. Chair of Historic Garden Week Jeanne Fishwick with the Roanoke tour said every house showcased differs from its interior styles and gardens.

Have breaking news stories delivered right to your inbox

“I think I like something special in every home one of my favorite things is all the homes have beautiful color. I really love color and interior design and every one of these homes has art,” said Fishwick.

One of the homes on the tour is owned by Meredith Draper. She said she fell in love with the home and neighborhood the second she saw it more than 10 years ago.

“We added on to the house and made it what we needed for our family and it’s just it is a wonderful neighborhood. Kind of right in the middle of the city, but you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of the city,” said Draper.

The home was built in 1952, and it’s a traditional, white-brick colonial.

Draper said when they moved in, she had to build her garden from scratch. She said it’s taken her about 10 years to build it up. There’s everything you can think of too from lilacs, magnolias, peonies and boxwood. She even has her favorite, which are hydrangeas.

“I just love them when they’re in bloom, and unfortunately, they’re not in bloom until later summer,” said Draper.

There’s also a pool that has several flowers and bushes surrounding it. The best part is the pool overlooks the garden.

Roanoke’s Historic Garden Week, which has existed for 91 years, is sponsored by the Garden Club of Virginia. The annual event allows visitors to tour private landscapes, public gardens and historic sites across Virginia, including Roanoke. This year, there are 29 tours across the Commonwealth. All proceeds from the event go toward raising money for the restoration and preservation of historic properties around the state.

“We’re always in Roanoke at the end of April,” said Fishwick.

The Lakewood neighborhood has not been featured in more than 50 years.

“I think it’s a beautiful little hidden gem of a neighborhood. The homes are absolutely gorgeous. The history of the neighborhood is very interesting. It was originally developed as a hunting lodge and property to escape downtown Roanoke,” said Fishwick.

If you come out on Saturday, you can even view the first floor of each house.

“I love peddling around in my home and the way I decorate our home is I truly buy what I love and just make it work. So, our home is very eclectic. I mix antiques and modern stuff. I have porcelain that I’ve collected. I have a Herend collection,” said Draper.

The event kicks off Saturday at 10 am at Virginia Western Community College. Shuttle buses are taking people to and from the Lakewood neighborhood until 4 pm. At the community college, you’ll have the chance to see the Community Arboretum and there are several vendors for you to enjoy.

To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.
