How To Reach

Abhaneri is located on NH-11 or the Jaipur-Agra road. The nearest airport to Abhaneri is the Jaipur Sanganer Airport from where you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach your destination. Abhaneri is also well connected by road as both government and private buses ply regularly between Abhaneri and Dausa, Agra, Jaipur, Ajmer, Alwar, Bharatpur, and Bikaner. Abhaneri is well connected by rail through Dausa railway station which has excellent connectivity with various major cities of the state and the country.

Complete Guide to Chand Baori Abhaneri Step Well [2024]

Thinking of visiting Chand Baori step well? This guide has everything you need to know to plan your visit to the Abhaneri step well from getting there to nearby food options.

Chand Baori the step well in the small Rajasthan village of Abhaneri (also sometimes spelled Abaneri) is one of the largest and oldest step wells in Asia and an absolute must-visit in India .

Visiting Chand Baori gives you an insight into what life was like in India hundreds of years ago and you can see how at the same time a lot and very little has changed in rural Rajasthan. 

I particularly loved the peacefulness of Abhaneri after spending time in the chaotic big cities of Delhi and Jaipur and would recommend Chand Baori as a stop to add to your India itinerary for a break from crowds and noise.

There are also very few hawkers around Chand Baori compared to most other tourist attractions in India so you can rest assured that the chance of being harassed and pushed to buy cheap souvenirs is low.

I visited Abhaneri as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Varanasi , Khajuraho ,  Orchha and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

What is a step well?

Before I visited India, I had never heard of step wells but these incredibly practical monuments are a feature of the Indian landscape.

As it says in the name, they are essentially a deep well accessed by many many steps.

While some step wells are small structures, others, like the one in Abhaneri, are bigger than a town square.

That’s because these larger step wells weren’t just used for collecting water, they acted as a gathering place for the local community, places where people swam, did washing, socialised and conducted business. 

Because the wells are built into the ground, they are cool in the scorching Rajasthan summers. This style of construction also helped them escape some of the wear and destruction of aboveground buildings of the same age.

The history of Chand Baori

Chand Baori was built in the 8 th  – 9 th  centuries (unfortunately records aren’t 100% accurate that far back) so it’s well over 1000 years old. It’s incredible that it’s in such good condition after all this time.

The step well is named after King Chanda, the local ruler from the Pratihara dynasty who oversaw its construction. Baori means well in Hindi.

The well was built to have a top level of covered market stalls where food and various other essentials were sold. Then there are 13 levels of steps (over 3000 steps total) descending down to the water.

On one side, rather than steps, there are rooms designed for the local royalty when they came to bathe and enjoy the coolness of the step well.

Where is Chand Baori step well?

Chand Baori is in Abhaneri, a village of around 2000 people in the Dausa district of Rajasthan in India’s northeast.

It is less than 100km from Jaipur, on the well-trodden Golden Triangle tourist route which makes it an easy detour for travellers.

The step well is right in the middle of the village so it’s impossible to miss.

How to get to Abhaneri step well

It’s easiest to get to Abhaneri from Jaipur, as the closest large city. The trip can be made in a day quite easily although staying a night in Abhaneri is a great way to experience Indian village life.

For foreign tourists not on a shoestring budget, I would recommend just getting a taxi from Jaipur to Abhaneri. Depending on your bargaining skills this can cost anywhere upwards of 1000 rupees for the return trip (cost is shared between all people in the vehicle).

The drive from Jaipur to Abhaneri takes around 2 hours dependent on traffic.

There are also tour companies running day tours from Jaipur with private transport included.

This is a great option if you want guided commentary for your step well visit (I would recommend this as there are lots to learn about) and to avoid the organisational hassle. You can book tours through Viator.

Accommodation near Abhaneri step well

Accommodation options in Abhaneri are somewhat limited. We stayed at the Abhaneri Niwas resort which is the only large hotel in town. It’s a beautiful property only a short walk from the step well.

The resort rooms are enormous and there is a restaurant on the property, however, as is always the case in India, power cuts happen and hot water is not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions about Chand Baori step well Abhaneri

The Chand Baori step well is no longer in use as Abhaneri villagers have water piped into their houses so the water in the well has been allowed to become stagnant.

Entrance to the step well is completely free making it one of the best free attractions in India. 

If you can visit outside of summer to avoid the heat and monsoon season to avoid the rain it will make your visit more enjoyable. That means travelling between October and March.  Bear in mind that December-January is peak tourist season in India so the step well can get crowded in those months.

Allow 1-2 hours for your visit to Abhaneri step well so you have time to walk around and see all of the incredible stone carvings that have been excavated and left on the top level of the well.

Abhaneri Step Well Opening Hours

The step well is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 6 pm. I would recommend going early in the day as it can get very hot in the middle of the day and there is no shelter whatsoever.

If you’re looking for a unique day trip in India that goes beyond the typical Delhi-Taj route then Chand Baori step well in Abhaneri is definitely one to add to your list.

A MAZE IN A STEPWELL

Chand Baori (stepwell) in the Abhaneri village is one of the oldest and most popular attractions in Rajasthan. It was built by King Chanda of the Nikumbha Dynasty in 9th century AD. One of the largest stepwells in the world, Chand Baori was built to conserve water and provide a respite from the intense heat. It was a community gathering place for locals as well as royals. Chand Baori is an architectural wonder with 3,500 perfectly symmetrical, narrow steps. It is this exquisite geometry that draws local and international visitors to it every year. But Chand Baori is not easy to find, making it one of India’s hidden wonders. The play of light and shadow on the steps is what makes the structure so captivating. The baori narrows as one gets closer to the bottom. A double flight of steps on three sides takes one to the surface of the water below. The fourth side is a three-storeyed pavilion with intricately carved jharokhas (windows), galleries and balconies meant for the royal family to sit in. Adjoining the Chand Baori is the Harshat Mata Temple. This 9th-10th century temple is dedicated to Harshat Mata, who is considered to be the goddess of joy and happiness for the whole village.

HOW TO REACH HERE

Chand Baori is situated 88 kms from Jaipur. To get to Chand Baori one can take a jeep or a taxi from Sikandra, or hail a taxi from Jaipur. The route from Jaipur to Chand Baori takes one through Dausa, Sikandra Mod, Goolar Chauraha and finally Abhaneri.

Abhaneri Travel Guide- What to Know Before You Go

Abhaneri is a village in the Rajasthan district of Dausa, located in the distance 95 km from Jaipur on the Jaipur-Agra Highway. Chand Baori is a colossal stepwell that is one of the most beautiful step wells in India .

The place is very popular. Samrat Mihir Bhoj, who was the Gurjar Pratihar King, is believed to have founded the village of Abhaneri. It was originally named Abha Nagri, meaning the “city of brilliance”, but with time it was changed to Abhaneri because of the mispronunciation of the name.

• This small hamlet draws a lot of visitors from all over the world, however, the city of luminosity, or Abha Nagri, as it was once called, is in a dilapidated state. Abhaneri is well-known for baoris used for the rainwater harvest in summer. Chand Baori is the most prominent and prominent of all the step walls here because of its beautiful stone architecture. This is one of the highest and deeper foothills of India.

If you want a shower drizzle, then your calendars will check the months from June to September to visit Abhaneri village. October to March , otherwise, is fine since the weather is warmer.

The Steep Wells are the major attractions of Abhaneri . These step wells were invented to preserve the rainwater in historical times. Chand Baori is one of the most famous such step wells in India. It is one of the largest wells in Rajasthan . Chand Baori is an architectural wonder with 3,500 perfectly symmetrical, narrow steps.

Chand Baori at Abhaneri Village in Rajasthan is the most photogenic step well of India. When you stand next to this 13 story deep step well with symmetric triangular steps leading to the water at the bottom, you cannot but be mesmerized. You, of course, understand that in the desert of Rajasthan, it is a practical water management solution. It also serves as a natural cooler in summer months. But, what inspired the people of those days to build it so beautifully. Were all the public spaces so beautiful in 9th CE? I wonder how India would have looked then.

History of Chand Baori – Abhaneri

Chand Baori is the oldest surviving step well in Rajasthan and probably India. It was built by the King named Chanda or Chandra of the Nikhumbha dynasty. The time of the stepwell is 8-9th CE making it 1200-1300 years old. Yes, it is older than Taj Mahal , Khajuraho Temple s, and Chola Temples but younger than Ajanta and Ellora Caves .

It is named after the King who built it. The city was then called Abha Nagri.

Baori is a general name for step well – other names being – Bawdi, Vav, and Pushkarni. Anyway, let me show you the step-well as I saw it in the second decade of 21st CE.

Visiting Chand Baori – Abhaneri

Having seen so many wonderful images of the step-well – I had goosebumps as I entered the premises of the Baori through a raised pavilion. I first saw a group of women worshipping the Shivalinga. A few steps and the step well appeared in all its glory.

The architecture of Chand Baori

On three sides of this 19.5 meters deep step well are geometric steps. Steep triangular steps ensure that you get down or up sideways and not straight. I wonder if this was done just for aesthetics or there was a practical purpose as well. I could only think that going sideways maybe a little safe. It also allows multiple people to sit close to the water.

The fourth side has pillared corridors at multiple levels. Two balconies project towards the stepwell. They are adorned with the idols of Mahisasurmardini and Ganesha. The step-well also has an image of Sheshasayee Vishnu or the sleeping Vishnu. Here, I was told there is an image at one of the lower corridors. Since visitors are not allowed to enter the step well, it is not visible. Idea is that the stepwell or any water body is supposed to be an embodiment of Ksheersagar – the ocean of milk where Vishnu lives.

If you look closely you would see a shaft to pull water up from the stepwell. It is so well concealed in the structure that you more often than not miss it.

35,000 Steps at Chand Baori

In all, there are 35,000 steps on 13 levels at the step-well. The Baori gets narrow as it goes down.

I walked around to admire the Baori from all angles. The water at the bottom was of bright green color – it added its own vibrancy to the ambiance. I could only imagine how it would be to sit in those corridors in the summer heat of Rajasthan. To be surrounded by the beautifully carved images all around would have been quite an experience. How I wish, we can re-create some of these experiences for our and our next generations to come.

From my camera lens, I could zoom in and see some lovely carved doorjambs. The staircases follow the same pattern as the other three sides but on a larger scale. The arches, of course, tell you that they were later added as during the 8-9th CE India had no concept of arches like these.

Once I and my camera had a fill of step well, I looked around. The Baori is enclosed with a high wall and a corridor runs parallel to this. An ASI board informed me that the walled enclosure and the entrance are later additions and were not part of the original plan.

As of now, the corridors are full of excavated artifacts. There are stone sculptures of all kinds. I walked around trying to decipher a few, and here what I could find:

• Shiva Head in Red Sandstone, Shiva meditating, Shiva with Parvati
• Vishnu as Kalki Avatar, as Parashurama
• Karthikeyan
• Mahishasurmardini – a very finely carved one
• Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh Panel
• Harshat or Harsiddhi Mata Temple
• Jain Images
• Yaksha Statues
• Some exquisitely carved pillars

Abhaneri Festival

An annual 3-day Abhaneri festival happens at the beginning of Sharad Navratras. So, it would fall 10 days before Dussehra or 30 days before Diwali each year. My guide told me that for these 3 days, the step well is open to the public. In fact, a kind of diving competition happens among the young men in the village.

It is not surprising since Navratras celebrate the Shakti and there is Harshat Mata temple next to the Baori.

This place gets a lot of tourists. It is one of those places in India that gets more foreign visitors than Indians.

Harshat Mata Temple

About 100 meters to the west stands a solitary temple with a dome roof. It is dedicated to Harshat Mata who is also referred to as Harsiddhi Mata in many texts. She is supposed to be a goddess of happiness and Joy. Now, who would not like her blessings.

The Harshat Mata Temple was built by the same king at the same time. In fact, ancient step wells were always located next to a prominent temple. The only exception I have seen is Rani ki Vav in Patan. It is a small temple on a high platform that you need to approach through a flight of stairs.

I walked around the platform and saw the lovely depictions of Sunflower. Now, I had seen sunflower fields all the way on our drive to Abhaneri. It was lovely to see them on stone carved panels at this temple. They punctuate the other figurines all around the outer surface of the platform. It tells me that sunflowers have been around here at least since the time of this temple and step well. Finding sunflower in art is not common, across India and even Asia, it is the Lotus flower that dominates the art, followed by Hibiscus.

Harshat Mata Temple faces the east and it originally had a Nagar style shikhara also called Mahameru Shikhara. The remains of this can be seen in the form of broken Amlaka pieces around the temple. An Amlaka is the representation of Amla or Gooseberry fruits that sits on top of the temple Shikhara. Dome is obviously a medieval replacement. Within the Nagar Style, it is Panchratha style temple.

Notable sculptures at Harshat Mata temple are deities in the upper niches all around the temple. At the bottom level, you can see the Mangal Murtis of couples and Sur Sundaris. Parts of the original temple are profusely and finely carved.

There are board games engraved on the floor indicating that this was not just a place of worship but a community space as well.

The main idol inside the temple looks like a recent idol from its style. My guide opined that it was originally a Vishnu temple and not a Devi temple. I did not find a clue to that.

For me, it’s a small glimpse of the glorious past of this region.

• Abhaneri is in Dausa district of Rajasthan, about 90 km from Jaipur. It is best to do it as a day trip from Jaipur.
• On the way, you can also visit Bhangarh Fort – the most haunted place in India.
• You need 30-60 minutes to see this place. I spent about 2 hours as I was exploring all possible sculptures.
• Guides are available at the site, but if you have read this post, you would not really need them.

Absolutely, I still get goosebumps when I see the image of Chand Baori. Especially the way the baori is lit up during the Diwali is so mesmerising. I am planning to visit this place since past since couple of years but for some reason couldnt make it.

Harmony, this is a traditional architecture of step wells in western India. Besides this one, there is Rani ki Vav little south of this one which is 7 floors inside the ground and absolutely ornate. You should see them when you visit India.

Most step wells in India are 1000 year or more old. I guess this was our indigenous technology for water management in dry areas that get hardly any rainfall. Sometimes I feel, we should have water tourism that includes step wells.

Rosie, unfortunately, it is not in active use anymore. That is the reason you see algae on the water giving it bright green color. It is opened once a year when Abhaneri festival is celebrated for 3 days.

I found this step well mesmerizing! (I bet you guessed it by the amount of time I took on taking a 1000 photos!) Somehow, but, I had a feeling that some knowledge is missing, that some things are maybe forgotten about the stone well’s history. Ironically we did not get a chance to take a picture from below. That would have been cool no? =D Just the other day I saw the abhaneri step well again in an ad, or at least I think it’s that but I pretty much recognized it to the core.

Mesmerising it is. When the British brought the piped water, these step wells went into disuse. These are excellent water management strategies for arid regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat. What fascinates me is how they created them with love and affection – every stone is carved precisely and aesthetically.

Hi there Anuradha! Just stumbled upon your awesome blog in a search trying to find the days in Abhaneri when the baoli is open fully. Can you please check to see if my calculations are correct for 2018? If the Abhaneri festival is 30 days before Diwali (07 Nov) and also 10 days before Dussehra (18 Oct), That means the festival starts 8th October.. I think? I’m recently back from my 9th trip to India and although I’ve seen a lot of Baoli’s/stepwells, I’ve yet to make the trip to Chand Baori – I’ve no excuse really when you consider I usually stay in Jaipur for a week each trip lol! Next time though, definitely!

Arthur – your calculation is absolutely right. Abhaneri festival happens during the first 3 days of the Navratras which is same as 10 days before Dussehra and 30 days before Diwali. I am aware of the stepwell atlas project – they are doing a wonderful job.

I hope the Vanishing Stepwells of India would get redundant soon, as there is a huge initiative to revive the old waterbodies of India including step wells. Fingers Crossed.

I never thought of 7 layers, but I know there is always a Murti of Sheshashayee Vishnu, and my interpretation is that it is a re-creation of Ksheersagar.

I visited Chand Baori three years back and also bhangarh. Amazing architect. RANI KI Vav is equally interesting. I was little disponted to see the area arround Baori and its aproach. Govt. Should develop the area arround it. chand Baori is not well publicised. Many people in Jaipur has not herd about it.

Harshat Mata Temple

Harsha Mata is the goddess of joy and happiness, where the name is coined after her. The outer wall of the temple has the carvings of god. The temple also has beautiful sculptures found in the upper segment of the temple. Although during the temple run through destruction by the Islamic rulers, still it pertains to the beauty in it with its sculpture and architectural style.

The temple also resides in beautiful Shiva Temple consisting of Shiv Panchayat on the upper side. The most beautiful element of the temple is the pillar, designed and carved beautifully. The temple is an entry fee and is open all day of the year.

Chand Baori stepwell

Chand Baori is yet another interesting tourist spot in the Abhaneri Village. The stepwell is one of the longest and deepest step-wells in the whole world. t consists of three thousand and five hundred narrow steps with thirteen stories. The architectural display proves the intelligence of the then architecture especially its geometrical structure. The well was constructed by King Chand to ensure the local people get access to fetching clean water. As the area is dry, the well aided the people with water preserve system throughout the year.

Abhaneri Festival

Carrying the popular badge of vibrant state with royalty, cuisine and vintage sight, Rajasthan is the center of attraction. With the conduction of multiple festivals and fairs , Rajasthan captures the tourism economy even more.

Abhaneri Festival is one of the festivals which boosts tourism in India. tart in the month of September or October. The festival got its popularity and fame from the year 2008 along with the Pushkar, Teej and Camel festival.

The Village is a well-connected center. It is located in the NH-11or the Jaipur-Agra road. Jaipur Sanganer Airport is the nearest airport where a cab and taxi can be taken. Abhaneri is also well connected by road as both government and private buses ply regularly between Abhaneri and Dausa, Agra, Jaipur , Ajmer, Alwar, Bharatpur , and Bikaner. Dausa is the nearest railway station.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is the best time to visit the place. Preferably September or October is the ideal time to visit because of the Abhaneri Village Festival . Even the place is a small rustic village it provides as the perfect long weekend goal.

What & Where is Abhaneri Stepwell? Chand Bawdi History, Timing and Full info

What and where is Abhaneri Stepwell? It’s a historical baodi (step well) located in a village named Abhaneri in Dausa district. The iconic structure attracts thousands of tourists every day and it is among the must visit offbeat places during your Jaipur trip.

The famous stepwell is located in the Eastern part of Rajasthan, in a less touristy district Dausa. It’s a historic place, believed to be constructed in 9th century during Nikumbh Dynasti headed by King Raja Chand also known by the name Samrat Mihir Bhoja.

Let’s get into the details of this architectural wonder of Rajasthan.

About Abhaneri Stepwell

It wouldn’t be fair if I don’t start this section with the history of Chand Bawdi. As aforementioned, it was built during 9th century, the Nikumbh Dynasty of King Raja Chand.

Located in a village named Abhaneri near Bandikui , the place attracts hundreds of tourists every day for its architecture and ruins. The village name, Abhaneri means the city of joy as Abha in Hindi means Joy and Neri was shortened with time from Nagri which means city.

It was believed by the local people that the village has blessings of Goddess Harshat Mata who is the Goddess of Joy. A dedicated temple of Harshat Mata was also constructed along with Chand Baowri during the same period. Later the temple was destroyed by Mahmud Ghazni during his power hunger drive in the state.

Ruined statues from the temple are kept inside the Chand Bawdi and you can easily notice the broken faces of the Gods and Goddesses statues.

The locals and the traders in the nearby area used to worship Harshat Mata, expecting her to continue blessing the town with her Abha, Joy.

The temple is still there, the Goddess being worshipped by the locals and can be visited by the tourists as well. One can notice the ruin around the temple.

Abhaneri Chand Bawdi History

Coming back to the Abhaneri step well history, the architecture was built to preserve water as the area is prone to drought and lesser rain during monsoon period.

The architecture was designed in a way that there is no chance you can repeat the same set of stairs for walking down and coming up. The stairs always keeps a pair of light and shadow, giving an iconic look during the daytime.

During the full moon night, the steps sparkle but unfortunately, it can be visited during the day hours only.

The Chand Stepwell in Abhaneri is about 20 meter deep, having 13 levels of stairs and has a purpose of storing the rainwater. It’s a clear example of old techniques of preserving rainwater and keeping it safe for longer usage.

Later, a palace was constructed around the step well was used by the ruler of the kingdom.

What is Abhaneri Festival?

A two day festival was organized by the Rajasthan Tourism and District Administration of Dausa district in Abhaneri village to put local artists and musicians in front of the tourists and visitors. Abhaneri festival was started on October 1, 2016.

As a movie buff and huge fan of Batman comic world, I was taken up by a surprise when I discovered that the director of Dark Knight Rises , Christopher Nolan combined two different historic places of Rajasthan and portrayed it in a single frame, as a single place.

If you remember the particular scene where Ben leaves Bruce inside the well, that scene was actually shot at Chand Bawdi in Abhaneri.

The beauty of Nolan’s creation is that the top well scene was actually shot in a well behind Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur while the interior of good scenes was shot at Chand Bawdi Stepwell. Now you know the answer to Dark Knight well scene location.

He combined the two places to create a single fictional place. Impressive, isn’t it?

Abhaneri Baori Facts

Entry is Free but there is about 20 INR parking fee if you’re driving a personal car.

Abhaneri Timing

Tourists can visit and see the beauty of Chand Baori during day hours only. As the sun sets, it is closed as per the rules set by archaeological department.

How to Reach Abhaneri Step Well from Jaipur?

If you’re driving, take the route to Agra and start driving till Sikandara. From there, you need to take a Left turn towards Bandikui and then a right turn from Gol Market towards Abhaneri.

In case you’re planning to visit Bhangarh first, then take a Left from Dausa and then follow the Map as shown in the screenshot below.

You can also take the Ramgarh then Aandhi then Bhangarh route but the road condition is not that good as the Dausa one.

How to Reach Chand Baori from Delhi?

There are two routes one can follow to reach Chand Baori in Abhaneri from Delhi. Both starts with the NH48 from Delhi and going towards Alwar. One can reach Alwar via Bhiwadi route or from Behror route. I prefer Behror route as it has a better road and lesser traffic.

After Alwar, you take the road to Rajgarh then continue towards Sikandara on Agra highway. About 10 KMs before Sikandara you’ll get a Left turn towards Abhaneri village.

From Alwar, you can even plan a visit to Sariska and then reach Abhaneri but that will require an additional day (at least).

How to Reach Abhaneri Stepwell from Agra?

From Agra you need to start driving towards Jaipur till Sikandara and the take a right towards Bandikui. Before Bandikui, there will be a Right turn towards Abhaneri.

Places near Abhaneri

There are just two places near Abhaneri step well which I’ll recommend a tourist to visit. One is Harshat Mata temple which is just outside the step well while the other one is the haunted fort of Bhangarh which is about 2 hours drive away.

Hotels near Abhaneri

If you are looking for accommodation options in Abhaneri village then there is just one named Abhaneri Village Safari Camp. There is hardly any better hotel or even a restaurant worth recommending in nearby areas.

I recommend one to start from Jaipur or Delhi or Agra with proper meal and carry a meal if necessary. Or one can try out the available restaurants but I hardly believe a tourist will like any.

In short, it’s recommended to start early from Jaipur or Delhi or Agra, reach Abhaneri Stepwell, see it around during day hours and come back from where you started or to any of the three big cities mentioned before the sun sets.

Bhangarh Abhaneri Tourist Places

Bhangarh is famous for mystery. The Bhangarh Fort  is a 17th-century fort built in the Rajasthan state of India. It was built by Man Singh I  for his younger son Madho Singh I. It was named by Madho Singh after his grandfather Man Singh or Bhan Singh. There are three legends related to the history of the fort city, which is reported to be haunted. No one is allowed to remain in the precincts of the fort at night, as per the notice board put up by the Archaeological Survey of India at the entrance.One version of the legend is that, a sadhu named Baba Balau Nath lived within the fort area. It was his injunction that any house built in the precincts of the fort should not be taller than his house and if the shadow of any such house fell on his house, it would result in destruction of the entire fort town.

In another version, N.K. Sinhai, the wizard who was adept in black magic, fell in love with Ratnavati, the princess of Bhangarh . She was very beautiful and had suitors to marry her from many royal families of the country. One day the princess, at 18 years of age, went shopping with her friends and was buying Ittar (scent). The wizard saw this and replaced the scent with a love potion in order to ensnare the princess. He offered the potion to her so that she would take a liking to him and marry him.However, the princess sensed the wizard’s trickery. When he offered her the bowl of potion, she threw it onto a big boulder nearby. As a result, the boulder started rolling down towards the wizard and crushed him. Before he died, he made a curse that Bhangarh would be destroyed soon and no one would be able to live within its precincts. Subsequently, Bhangarh Fort was invaded by the Mughals from the north and the city was surrounded and sacked .10,000 people lived in the fort city at that time. All the people in the fort, including the princess, were killed. The present state of the fort is attributed to the curse of the wizard and people believe the ghosts in the fort are those of the princess and the wizard.

Holidays are not necessarily always meant to visit a hill station or a beach (though I love them too). However, sometimes I like to experience the true essence of our heritage and undoubtedly what the fascinating experience Abhaneri Step Well (Chand Baori) has to offer.

Brief of Abhaneri Step Well

Abhaneri Step Well is located around 95 km from Jaipur in the village Abhaneri of Rajasthan, towards the Jaipur-Agra highway, Abhaneri also known as ‘Abha Nagri” , is a small village of the Dausa district. As per the ancient stories, this village was established in the 9th century A.D. by King Raja Chand of the Gurjar kingdom. This ancient village is renowned for its post-Gupta or early medieval monuments, Chand Baori and Harshat Mata temple.

How this trip happened

As my followers already know, I love exploring new places and am very keen to know about our rich culture, which always amazes me with the way it is structured and built.

During my last visit to Jaipur , I heard about “ Chand Baori ‘ and was planning to visit there for a long time. Though it was pending in my checklist, it was being delayed for so long, and finally, on the last weekend, it happened.

Our journey to Abhaneri steps well from Delhi

Abhaneri Step Well is located on NH-11, the Jaipur-Agra road.

It almost takes 4 hours to reach Delhi. I always try to start my journey early in the morning, and this was also not an exception. Also, truck traffic and poor visibility are one of the reasons I avoid late-night driving on this highway.

We (my family and I) started our journey at 4 a.m. by car.

In the Midway is a Place called “Behror” an initiative by Rajasthan Tourism Department , which is a good place to have breakfast and lunch. We stopped there for a good 40 minutes and had our morning snacks. They have a Variety of Hygienic Food to satisfy all your cravings.

Abhaneri step well is almost 30 km away from Jaipur’s main city. We reach the village at around 11 a.m. You can find a lot of places to stay here such as Abhaneri Niwas, Agaman Camp, etc.

After resting for a while, we started our exploration of the famous Chand Baori and others.
