I would not recommend this travel agency to anyone. Very unprofessional and lacking empathy for their customers. My elderly parents recently had many issues because of their lack of knowledge and communication.
I'd pass. Friendly on the phone, promised to call with a quote, no follow-up. So I called back, once again she never called back. Not a good sign of reliability which is job one for a travel agent.
My wife and I purchased everything from air tickets, to hotels to car rentals for a trip to Portugal, where we never had been before. The price was excellent and they were really nice and patient with us. It was a complex trip as we wanted to know several parts of the contry and even cross the border to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Despite all complexity, everything worked out nicely. Not a single glitch! The only thing wrong in those vacations was a torrential rain that hit us when we arrived at Vianna do Castelo, and lasted a few hours -- but I guess they can't control the Weather (yet) :-) The trip was so good that we can't stop thinking about going back. And we are going to use this same agency.

Acadia National Park Travel Photograph Gallery
I formed a bond with the magic of Acadia National Park before I turned 11 years old. Now, I make the drive each year, almost 600 miles from my home, to enjoy and try to capture its grandeur with my photographs. I share this gallery of Acadia photos with you in the hopes that you can experience the magic as well. Enjoy the show!
The photo of the ocean waves crashing onto the rocks above is a common scene throughout Acadia. This is likely the most iconic image representing the area, but there are so many more amazing photo ops in this geologically unique area.
I came across the breathtaking sunrise above on my way to one of the dozens of great hiking tails on Mount Desert Island and felt compelled to stop and photograph it. I had visited and taken photographs at this location in Southwest Harbor several times over the years, but never with such amazing lighting.
Acadia Photographs Video
Here's a chance for you to immerse yourself in a relaxing 6 minute video revealing Acadia images taken over the last ten years. It's your opportunity to escape to this magical place without leaving your chair.
Best Time of Year To Photograph Acadia
The most popular times to photograph Acadia are when the weather is pleasant, but that's not always the best time in terms of getting the best photos. The rocks and the ocean are very constant in their stunning appearance, but the vegetation and lighting conditions vary with the season.
WINTER. Acadia averages about 60 inches of snow each year. Being right on the coast, the snow does not last a long time on Acadia. A big advantage of shooting your Acadia travel photos in the winter is the you'll have no traffic jams or parking challenges to deal with. Here's a complete post on winter travel to Acadia .
SPRING . Spring is the time of rebirth and photographing the new growth of vegetation and the increased activity of wildlife make Spring an appealing time to photograph Acadia. You'll have more opportunity to photograph the pastel colors of Spring.
SUMMER. The weather is very pleasant in the summer and it's the most popular time for the average tourist to take photos in the park and surrounding areas. I recommend you include exploring the western half of Mount Desert Island for photos. You'll avoid the crowds and parking nightmares of traveling the Park Loop Road in the summer.
FALL. For me, shooting Acadia in the Fall provides the most appealing situations for photography. The pallet of both saturated and subtle colors that Mount Desert Island presents for you to capture with your cameras is extensive. You will deal with the visiting population of leaf peepers, but you can still avoid the crowds if you start your day of photography early and end it late as well.
Best Time of Day To Photograph Acadia
In the case of Acadia, the scenery is so good that you can get great photos at anytime of day. With that said, the "golden hour" around sunrise and sunset have long been favored by nature and landscape photographers.
Sunrise and sunset lighting often have amazing saturated colors, often create fascinating shadows and textures in your subject. Many photographers will shoot sunrises on the east side of Mount Desert Island and shoot sunsets on the west side of the island.
Usually a mix of clear sky and clouds will give you the best photos of Acadia. Photographing the oceans and lakes during the day, when the sun is up high and behind you, will give you the bluest colors in the water.
Shooting Acadia At Night
Night time photography in Acadia has some great potential too. Along the coastline the amount of light pollution is minimal.
Whether you photograph the "Big Dipper" the "Milk Way" or a wide view of the stars along the coast, you can get some great shots a few hours after sunset when the sky gets its darkest. You'll need to use a sturdy tripod for the long exposures
For more information of stargazing and nighttime photography at Acadia, see this post .
Best Lens For Shooting Acadia
What is the best lens for Acadia National Park? You need the flexibility of having different focal length lenses available in order to capture all of the beauty of Maine. You can carry 3 different lenses or get a single lens that gives you all three of the following abilities
- WIDE ANGLE . I recommend at least as wide as 24mm with a full frame sensor camera or 18mm with a crop sensor camera. For super wide scenic compositions you'll need wider angles, such as 16mm for full frame and 11mm for crop sensors.
- TELEPHOTO. Although Acadia has some wildlife photography opportunities, it's unlikely the main subject you;re seeking to photograph during your travels to the area. Despite the fact that you're in Maine, you won't see any moose or bear. Deer, squirrels, and sea birds are plentiful. I recommend at least a 200mm for full frame camera and 150mm for crop cameras.
- MACRO. You don't need a true dedicated macro lens, but a close-focusing lens will be handy to shoot beautiful close ups.
If you visit Acadia and specifically Mount Desert Island a few times, you're bound to witness one of the surreal scenes of Acadia. (See the photo below.) Occasionally, a thick early morning fog will roll in off the Atlantic Ocean. Only the small mounds of the Schoodic Peninsula poke through the blanket of clouds on the distant horizon .
You'll get to see this fascinating view above the fog by hiking up one of the smaller mountains on the east side of MDI (Gorham or Champlain), or by getting to the top of the largest mountain, Cadillac Mountain.
Less Common Photo Ops In Acadia
If you want to up your game when it comes to photographing Acadia National Park, you should consider traveling to the lesser known locations for good photos. Beech Mountain is less than 1,000 feet in elevation so it's not too tough of a climb to get some awesome views, including this one of Long Pond.
Although the lighting wasn't perfect for this image, it's still a great photo for me to remember this enjoyable hike up Beech Mountain and the view of Long Pond from up high above it.
Another overlooked photo op in Acadia is the marshes. I enjoy the seemingly random ways that the grasses and waterways form and shape themselves. Although they pale in comparison to the highly saturated fall colors, you can still marvel at the way the subtle colors of the marsh that give you a visually interesting subject to photograph.
The photo above, of a marsh area on the west side of MDI, was taken as the last remnants of the morning fog lifted. I tired to capture the peacefulness of the scene before me.
No photo excursion to Acadia is complete without at least one photo of one of the many arch bridges on the carriage roads. The easiest one to access-and it's great to photograph-is Duck Brook Bridge. Just turn onto Duck Brook Rd. off of R. 233 (Eagle Lake Rd.) and drive to the end.
There are several interesting vantage points you can take to photograph Duck Brook Bridge. You can shoot the waterfall from the top, shoot through the middle arch from either side, or shoot from an angle like I did. I wanted to include the impressive stone steps leading into the composition as well as frame in the bridge itself with the beautiful fall foliage.
I hope you enjoy this guide and small photo gallery of Acadia National Park photography. Please help me share the magic of Acadia. Share this page using one of the share buttons at the end of this article, pin a photo to Pinterest, or post the URL address.

We just got back from a wonderful trip, courtesy of Victoria Callas of Arcadia Travel & Cruises. Many folks these days tend to "skip" using a travel agent, preferring to make their own travel plans. While there are all kinds of websites & apps to use, having a great travel agent is worth its weight in gold! All is fine on a trip until trouble appears. With a travel agent, you have a REAL LIVE PERSON to call if you run into a snag! A great travel agent like Vicky knows all the tricks and shortcuts that can really bump your trip up to the next level. Having her expertise at the tip of your fingers can provide solutions to problems. Covid restrictions change frequently. She's up to date on the requirements, not just for where you're starting your trip, but also for your trip's destination! What if someone in your party falls ill? What if you miss a connecting flight? THOSE are situations when a seasoned travel agent like Vicky can come to your rescue. Vacations can take many twists & turns. It's the situations that you CAN'T predict, that Vicky can assist with. For example, in 2012, I took my 78 year old mother-in-law to Puerto Rico. The first 3 days were great but unfortunately mom came down with a stomach issue requiring hospitalization. Luckily, Vicky was by our side (via phone) every step of the way! She rebooked our return flight which had to be delayed until mom was better. What was a language barrier for me (as I only speak English) was no problem for Vicky who is multi-lingual. She's a godsend. She's been our treasured travel agent for over 30 years! She goes out of her way to make sure everything goes smoothly before, during and after your trip. She's the BEST! Thank you Vicky for all the years of great trips that you've booked for us! We look forward to many more!
We just got back from a cruise that Vicky had set up for us. She was very instrumental in helping with all the documents that we needed for embarkation and answered our many questions regarding parking and the procedures to be followed at the port. We are not particularly tech savvy but Vicky made sure that all the i's were dotted and all the t's crossed. We had gone to a couple of other travel agents before we went to her and some of them gave us the impression that their travel business was something they did on the side. Vicky does only travel and she does it well!
If you are planning to go to Greece, I would only use Vicky to book your trip. She put us in the perfect locations in both Santorini in Fira and Mykonos -- we were in the most beautiful location on the Platis Gialos beach. Both were family friendly and away from the summer crowds. While traveling to Athens we were caught in the wild fires, it was a stressful plane ride and we decided to skip our time in Athens. Vicky was there for us every step of the way helping us re-route our travel and taking our calls and texts to make sure we were taken care of. She treated us like family!
First Vicky planned a spectacular vacation for my wife and I. Making sure that all of my numerous excursion and site visit requests were preplanned and arranged. Unfortunately 10 days before the vacation I fell ill and needed surgery. Vicky jumped in and fought with the agencies and insurance to make sure we got the full refund and was by our side the entire time!!! From beginning to end she was our partner and our champion! After I recover she will definitely be planning all our future vacations!
I love Vicky, she is the best person to book your vacation, honeymoon , whatever your heart desires. I'm a very picky and know what I want person,Vicky is just a delight, delivered excellent service and she's very knowledgeable.
Love ya Vicky! She is wonderful to work with! She is so knowledgeable about the travel industry, excellent service, highly recommended for any trip planners. I wonder why we booked our vacations online? It's not cheaper. Vicky has and finds the best deals! Vicky has over 30 years of experience! We would like to thank Vicky who answered all my questions, booked all flights, constructed detailed itineraries, organized transportation, made reservations, etc... She kindly listened to my ideas. She is highly recommended for any trip planners. She is truly an expert in her field. Thank You Vicky!!!
Vicky Callas with Arcadia Travel & Cruises
Best travel Agent!
This is the BEST travel agency ever!! It may be a small office but the service is the BIGGEST and BEST!! Vicky made our trip to Europe the most memorable trip of our lives. She was detailed in everything and gave it a personal touch. Very knowledgeable and professional in every sense. She gave us lots of suggestions and recommendations before our trip. She kept working on our trip to get us the best deals and prices. She even followed up with us to see how our trip was after we returned. I HIGHLY recommend this travel agency. I would give it more stars but we can only go up to 5 stars, however it deserves much more stars. Thank you Arcadia Travel!!!!
Vicky is so personable and fantastic at her job. She found us a terrific adults only all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I'm so happy we discovered her agency. Nancy B.
I have been going to Vicki at Arcadia Travel Agency for 30 years and prior to that my mother worked with Vicki.. She always goes the extra mile to make sure your trip is exactly what you are looking for. She has helped us booked trips to Europe, the Caribbean, a cruise and every trip has been spot on based on her recommendations... Stop in when planning your next trip, you will not be disappointed

Spectacular photos of America’s national parks
Posted: October 31, 2023 | Last updated: October 31, 2023
With the addition of White Sands and Indiana Dunes in 2019, there are now 62 national parks in the United States, each beautiful in its own right. And while it would be great to visit all of them, chances are you don’t have the time or resources. Lucky for you, we’ve got the next best thing.
Here are some of the most spectacular photos of America’s national parks.
The best time to see this 40,000-acre (162 sq. km) Maine recreation area just outside of Bar Harbor is in October, after the summer crowds have died down but before it gets too cold. Best of all, you’ll be just in time to see the colourful fall foliage .
American Samoa
As the only American national park in the southern hemisphere, there’s really nothing quite like the National Park of American Samoa, which spans three islands (Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta‘ū). It’s the only place in the country where you can immerse yourself in a 3,000-year-old Polynesian culture and enjoy pristine beaches and lush rainforests.
Of the two thousand or so natural sandstone arches that make up this stunning national park in eastern Utah, the most famous is the Delicate Arch , which stands 52 feet (16 m) tall and can be found on the state’s licence plate. Arches welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
Adirondack Park
Though technically not a national park , Adirondack is the largest protected park in the contiguous United States, made up of more than six million acres (24,280 sq. km) of land (that’s bigger than Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Smoky Mountains combined). Located in northeastern New York, the park is made up of more than 10,000 lakes and 30,000 miles (48,280 km) of rivers and streams.
Made up of “heavily eroded, intricate mazes of narrow ravines, v-shaped gullies, knife-sharp ridges, buttes, and colorful pinnacles,” it’s no wonder it’s called Badlands . Good thing you can enjoy a peek at this beautiful South Dakota park from a safe distance.
Carlsbad Caverns
The largest chamber in Carlsbad Caverns, located in Eddy County, New Mexico, is the Big Room , which has a floor space of 357,469 square feet (33,210 sq. m) and was described by comedian Will Rogers as “the Grand Canyon with a roof over it.”
Death Valley
It’s hard to believe that something called Death Valley could be so beautiful. For the best sight line in the park, be sure to check out Dante’s View . It looks out onto the Owlshead Mountains to the south, the Funeral Mountains to the north, and the salt flats below. Be sure to have your camera ready.
There’s not a bad view to be had in all of Denali, a park in the northern boreal forest biome that boasts a heavily forested landscape flanked by distant snow-capped mountains.
Everglades National Park in Florida is the country’s largest subtropical wilderness . It is home to many species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and marine creatures, including alligators and crocodiles, over a dozen species of turtle, the critically endangered Florida panther, bottlenose dolphins, and, perhaps most famous of all, the West Indian manatee, which can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.
Gates of the Arctic
Gates of the Arctic is the least-visited national park in the country—not for lack of natural beauty, but because, as its name suggests, it is extremely remote. Located north of the Arctic Circle, the park is unreachable by road or trail . If you do manage to make your way up there, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most stunning views in Alaska.
Gateway Arch
At less than 200 acres (0.8 sq. km), the Gateway Arch National Park is the smallest national park in the country , but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with its spectacular views of St. Louis’s iconic landmark. Built in 1965 to represent the city’s role in westward expansion, the Gateway Arch is the tallest arch in the world, standing 630 feet (192 m) high.
The best way to see Glacier National Park is on foot, and with over 700 miles (1,127 km) of hiking trails, you’ll never run out of places to go or things to see. One place you won’t want to miss is Lake McDonald, which is 10 miles (16 km) long and 472 feet (144 m) deep. The water is so calm and peaceful that you can make out the colourful pebbles just below the surface.
Grand Canyon
This landmark is a sight to behold at any time, but few places in America are as breathtaking as the Grand Canyon at sunset and sunrise , when the rocks casts unusual shadows and the sky resembles a watercolour painting.
Grand Teton
Just down the road from Yellowstone is Grand Teton, which offers striking views of the Teton Mountain Range and makes a strong case for being Wyoming’s most visually arresting national park. The park contains eight peaks with elevations above 12,000 feet (3,658 m); the highest, the Grand Teton, has a summit 13,770 feet (4,197 m) above sea level.
Great Basin
Matador Network named Nevada’s Great Basin America’s most underrated national park. What makes it so special? For starters, it offers some of the best views not just in the universe, but of the universe, thanks to its pitch-black night skies. You won’t need a telescope to spot the Milky Way.
Great Sand Dunes
The tallest sand dunes in North America can be found in Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park, with some reaching as high as 750 feet (229 m) above the San Luis Valley. To put that into perspective, that’s roughly half the height of the Empire State Building.
Great Smoky Mountains
Tallying more than 11.4 million visitors in 2018, Great Smoky Mountains, split between North Carolina to Tennessee , is the most-visited national park in the United States. With breathtaking views like this one of the seemingly endless Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s easy to see why.
Indiana Dunes
Located in Northwestern Indiana along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes is one of America’s newest national parks . It earned the designation on February 15, 2019, and is the first national park in Indiana’s history. Though it gets its name from the many sand dunes in the area (including Mount Baldy , a 126-foot-tall [38 m] moveable dune), the park also contains forests and prairies.
Joshua Tree
With its seemingly barren landscape, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city, Joshua Tree is a great place to get away. And upon closer inspection , you’ll find “a thriving ecosystem of plants and animals perfectly adapted to the harsh desert environment.”
Mount Rainier
There’s nothing quite like Mount Rainier in the summer, when the meadows are covered with wildflowers (everything from avalanche lilies and asters to cinquefoil and purple shooting stars). One of the most popular locations to view these colourful blooms is an area aptly named Paradise .
North Cascades
No need to adjust your screens. The waters of Diablo Lake in Washington’s North Cascades National Park really are that vibrant, a phenomenon caused by rocks that have been ground to powder by the surrounding glaciers. Diablo Dam Overlook off Hwy 20 offers some of the best views of the emerald-green lake.
Washington’s Olympic National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The park is home to four rainforests : Bogchiel, Hoh, Queets, and Quinault.
California surpassed Alaska as the state with the most national parks (nine) with the addition of Pinnacles in 2013. The park’s landscape, known for its namesake pinnacle rock formations, was formed as a result of multiple volcanic eruptions 23 million years ago .
Rocky Mountain
While summer is the busiest time of year for Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park, there’s something to be said about the way it looks in the winter, when the entire landscape is covered in snow. The cold months are also a great time to catch a glimpse of some of the area’s large mammals , including elk, mule deer, and moose.
Dating back 2,300 to 2,700 years, the General Sherman in California’s Sequoia National Park is the largest living tree on the planet, standing 275 feet (84 m) tall and with a diameter of 25 feet (8 m). Standing at the base and looking up at the top of this giant sequoia will leave you feeling dizzy.
This Minnesota park’s location along the Canadian border makes it one of the best spots in the lower 48 states to catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring northern lights . Montana may be Big Sky Country, but Voyageurs is clear sky country , “free of the excessive, misdirected, and obtrusive artificial light produced by the large urban cities across America.”
White Sands
White Sands is the newest national park in the U.S. , having seen its status upgraded at the end of 2019. With its dreamlike landscape, this New Mexico destination is popular among filmmakers , serving as the backdrop in Western, sci-fi, and apocalyptic films, including 2007’s Transformers .
Yellowstone
America’s oldest national park , Yellowstone is famous for its wildlife . It boasts the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48, including black bears, Canadian lynx, gray wolves, bighorn sheep, pronghorns, and many more. In this photo, an American bison can be seen standing by a geothermal hot pool in the winter.
El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park is roughly 3,000 feet (914 m) from base to summit along its tallest face (or 2.5 times the height of the Empire State Building), making it one of the most popular—and challenging—climbs in the country.
One of Zion’s most popular attractions, the Checkerboard Mesa gets its name from the checkerboard-like pattern of cracks in its sandstone hills. Although it saw a decline in visitors between 2017 and 2018 —a first in five years—this Utah park is one of the most-visited in the country, welcoming more than four million sightseers each year.

BEST selfie spots in Moscow (PHOTOS)
Where in Moscow can you feel like you’re in New York’s Central Park? How to see the entire city from one observation deck and what’s unusual about a regular business center?
The Floating Bridge in Zaryadye
Zaryadye Park is located in the very center of Moscow, near the Red Square. The V-shaped floating bridge hovers over the Moskva River and, from the right angle, you can catch the Kremlin or the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment building on camera. The bridge always has a lot of people on it, so it’ll be a mission to take a photo without strangers in it!
The Sparrow Hills observation deck
It’s located right across from the main building of Moscow State University and offers a panoramic view of Moscow. From there, you can see Moscow City, the White House, Luzhniki Stadium, Stalin’s skyscrapers and Novodevichy Convent . From the deck, you can take a selfie with the entire Moscow behind you, then you can turn around and take a photo against Moscow State University!
The Izmailovo Kremlin
This “toy” kremlin was created in 2003; today, you can find a cathedral, workshops, museums and cafes there. Entry is free, so you can take a photo against any building of the ensemble. If you want to catch the entire kremlin on camera, stand on the white-red pedestrian bridge.
Krasnogvardeyskiye Prudy
This now-trendy photo location is very reminiscent of Central Park in New York with its combination of greenery and city skyline. To get a good angle, head to the wooden deck near the ponds, stand closer to the handrails and be sure that you don’t have any construction going on behind you.
The observation deck of the Federation Tower
You can take a selfie at a height of 327 meters with a panoramic view of Moscow on the ‘Panorama360’ observation deck of one of the towers in Moscow City. However, a single-visit ticket will cost you up to 2,900 rubles (approx. $32!), depending on the age of the visitor, so you better make your selfie count!
The Narkomfin Building
One of the most famous examples of the Constructivist style buildings of the Soviet era became a favorite place for photographers. Initially, this building was erected for the employees of the Ministry of Finances of the USSR – that’s how the building received its name. Today, it is just a regular residential block; however, only the residents of the building can get inside without booking an excursion. But, you’re allowed to take photos outside; entry to the territory of the building is also free.
‘White Square’
In reality, this is the name of a business center, but the space around it is now dubbed the same. The location is interesting, because this modern office complex towers around an Old Believers’ church. If you pick the right angle, you can even catch the reflection of the church in the mirror windows of the business center!
This creative cluster was built on the site of a former factory. You’ll find stores, cafes, offices, as well as educational institutions. The space is decorated with graffiti and with sculptures by modern artists. To get the majority of the cluster in your selfie, it’s better to climb higher – for example, go on an excursion around the territory with roof access. But, keep in mind that excursions here are not held every day and you should buy a ticket in advance – it costs 1,500 rubles (approx. $17). Without an excursion entry to the territory of the cluster is free.
The observation deck of the Central Children’s Store
There’s an observation deck on the roof of the Central Children’s Store . Thanks to the Central Children’s Store’s location, a selfie from there will catch almost all main landmarks of the capital’s center. The entrance is on the 6th floor; the entry fee is 199 rubles (approx. $2.20).
Mosfilm film sets
If you already have a photo with a backdrop of modern Moscow, you can head to the Mosfilm movie studio pavilion. There, you’ll find a movie set complex, depicting the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg in the 19th century. However, you can only go to Mosfilm on an official excursion – a ticket for a group excursion costs up to 750 rubles (approx. $8.30).

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

Total solar eclipse sends parts of Canada into darkness
Parts of eastern canada in the dark as moon momentarily blocks sun.
VIDEO | Total eclipse's 'diamond ring effect' glistens over Quebec
Social sharing.
Millions of people across North America fell into chilly midday darkness on Monday as a total solar eclipse slid across the continent for the first time in seven years, leaving crowds to experience a phenomenon they won't see in Canada again for decades.
Parts of southern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes were momentarily plunged into the dark as the moon slid between the sun and the Earth over the course of a few hours in the afternoon. The sky dimmed, birds went quiet, streetlights came on and the sun's corona — a ghostly white ring around its outer edge — became visible to the human eye.
"This is incredible. That diamond ring ... that's gorgeous," said CBC's Chris Ensing, standing at the edge of Lake Erie during totality in Kingsville, Ont. "What a moment."
Clouds threatened to block the view of the sun in many areas within the path of totality, but the thin layer of clouds didn't seem to make much of a difference as the moon cast its shadow over parts of Canada. Some crowds clapped at the sight overhead, like those in Kingsville, while others went quiet.
The crowd in Niagara Falls cheered for Norma Rois, 58, when she yelled out that it was her birthday during a moment of the totality.
VIDEO | Crowd cheers as total eclipse peeks through clouds over Niagara Falls
"I felt like I was with family members the whole time. I don't know their names, but we were cheering together," she said.
Kathy Eller of O'Leary, P.E.I., said she had no regrets after waiting outside for six hours to take in the total eclipse near the province's northwestern tip.
"It was better than fireworks," she said. "I forgot about everybody around, and was just concentrating on the sun and the moon. It was kind of like magic."
In the nation's capital, a public inquiry looking into foreign interference in Canada's elections paused proceedings so the lawyers, witnesses and journalists could see the show.
Thousands of people in Mazatlán, Mexico, were first on the continent to experience totality at 1:05 p.m. ET. Crowds came together in deck chairs on the coastline, looking skyward through eclipse glasses as the moon slipped across the sky.
"It was absolutely remarkable. The sky was a little bit cloudy ... but the eclipse totality was not obscured at all," said Joy Daniels, an eclipse chaser who travelled to Mazatlán from her home in Calgary with 13 friends and family members.
"It went quite dark.... The birds, they all went to sleep and the temperature went way, way down."
The eclipse began over the southern Pacific Ocean before moving into Mexico and the United States. Crowds in southwestern Ontario were the first in Canada to experience the eclipse before the show moved into Quebec and Atlantic Canada, where it ended off the coast of Newfoundland after roughly 30 minutes.
In Canada, the path of totality — the stretch where the moon will block the sunlight entirely — included parts of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador.
People outside the path of totality in Ontario , Quebec and the Maritimes could see a partial solar eclipse, with just a chunk of the sun obscured by the moon.

What did the total solar eclipse look like?
A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. People watching from the path of totality experience what's called a total solar eclipse. The sky goes dark as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the sun's corona, the white ring usually washed out by the bright light of the sun.
Outside the path of totality, the moon moved between the sun and Earth — but the three didn't line up perfectly. Only a part of the sun was covered, giving it a crescent-like shape.

Why was this eclipse so significant.
After Monday, the next total solar eclipse over North America won't be until Aug. 23, 2044.
Beyond that, this event was particularly special because the path of totality passed over densely populated parts of Canada, Mexico and the U.S. (Most solar eclipses happen over the ocean.)
This one was also a longer show, with darkness lasting nearly two minutes longer over some areas in the path of totality than the last solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017.
Yes. It's always dangerous to look at the sun with the naked eye. Space agencies and ophthalmologists agree that looking at a partial solar eclipse without approved eye protection can cause lasting eye damage. The Canadian Space Agency and NASA have both extended advice for protecting your vision.
Eclipse glasses are sold at a variety of stores, both in person and online, but it's important to check for one key feature: Your glasses should be marked with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 12312-2 code. That code specifies the properties that a solar viewer should have to protect your eyes.
Can I take photos of eclipses on my phone?
Photographers don't recommend it. Just like the immense amount of direct light from the sun can damage your eyes, it can damage the lens of a camera.
If you're really compelled to take a photo of the sun, photographers say you should cover the lens with a solar filter — though they say their favourite photos are the ones that captured people as they experience the show.
Were Canadian cities in the path of totality busy?
Busier than usual. Many photographers and eclipse chasers spent months, if not years, planning for the total solar eclipse. Some have spent thousands of dollars travelling to what they hoped would be the best vantage point. Cities in the path of totality expected hundreds of thousands of people to flood their communities on Monday, potentially creating traffic jams. (Niagara Falls, Ont., was expected to be so crowded that the region declared a state of emergency 11 days in advance .
