Travelling by car gives you an immense sense of freedom. It opens up the possibility for many adventures along the way.

When you travel by car, you certainly enjoy the journey much more than alternative modes of transport.

Even so, whichever way you choose to travel, there will be a downside.

Before you embark on your travel journey, you should weigh the pros and cons of travelling by car first.

advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car

✅ 5 Advantages Of Travelling By Car

Most of the time, travelling by car makes your life a lot easier.

There are several advantages of car transport including the fact that it gives you more flexibility, freedom, and privacy when you set out on your adventure.

1. You Have More Flexibility And Freedom

When you travel by car, you are on your schedule and have complete control over your trip.

You can go at your own pace and stop whenever and wherever you like.

You don’t have to rely on timetables, worry about missing flights or buses, or deal with delays caused by public transport.

You also have the freedom to change your route if needed to avoid traffic jams.

2. It’s Easy To Transport Your Luggage Around

Another awesome thing about car traveling is that you have no baggage limits or restrictions.

The size of your car is the only limit, but if you’re renting a car for your road trip, you can choose a vehicle that is spacious and roomy.

Furthermore, once you load up, you can keep your luggage there.

You don’t have to carry it around or wait to receive it when you arrive at the other end, as with air travel.

Make sure to read our post about packing for road trips before you hit the road.

3. You Can See And Explore More Places

You can see so much more of the country you’re in by traveling by road rather than air.

What’s more, when you take a road trip, you can strategically plan your route to incorporate many scenic spots along the way.

You can also stop off in small villages to get a taste of the local life and experience the country’s culture.

There are always lots of unexpected delights too. On a road trip, you will often encounter exciting sights you didn’t know existed.

You will also have spontaneous adventures that you would never have imagined.

4. It Can Be A Fun Bonding Experience

Travel is better with friends, and this is particularly true when you travel by car.

The journey is often the best part of a road trip because you bond with your travel companions.

You might be traveling with lifelong buddies or friends you have recently made.

Either way, taking a road trip together is a brilliant way to get to know each other on a deeper level and have memorable conversations.

advantages and disadvantages of travelling by cars

5. You Have More Privacy And Comfort

Travelling by car with your friends means you don’t have to sit next to strangers for hours on end.

Depending on how many people are on the trip and how big your car is, you will most likely have more space to stretch out than you would on a plane or coach.

In general, car travel is one of the most comfortable modes of transport.

You will feel more at ease and can sleep without worrying about someone stealing your belongings.

❌ 5 Disadvantages Of Travelling By Car

Since you are in charge of the transport that gets you from one place to another, there’s always a chance that you could get lost or your car could break down.

Travelling by car might give freedom, flexibility, and privacy, but it can also bring some liabilities to the table. Let’s talk about them.

1. It Can Feel Long And Exhausting

Perhaps the biggest drawback of car travel is how tired it can make you feel.

Spending hours in the car each day can zap your energy, even if you’re not the one driving.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Take regular stops to stretch your legs and plan short walks at scenic viewpoints to reinvigorate yourself.

What’s more, to prevent boredom, try to make the time in the car as fun as possible. Put on your favorite playlists and sing along, or play games such as ‘I spy.’

If you’re traveling with your partner, read our list of road trip questions for couples .

2. You Might Experience Car Problems

Many people avoid traveling by car because of the fear of breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

This is an understandable concern if you’re in an unfamiliar country or are driving through long stretches of desert or countryside.

If you’re worried about getting stranded, ensure you have roadside assistance coverage and travel insurance .

Also, keep a stash of water and snacks, and consider packing a roadside emergency kit.

3. You Could Get Lost

Even with Sat Navs and Google Maps, it’s still possible to get lost on your road trip.

Again, this can be a scary thought if you are in the area or country for the first time and don’t know your way around.

Reduce the chance of getting lost by taking a Sat Nav or GPS device that doesn’t rely on wifi, and have an old-school paper map with you for backup.

4. Travelling By Car Can Become Costly

If you’re covering a great distance, car travel can become quite costly, and sometimes it can be much cheaper to fly.

This will depend on the gas prices of where you are and how many travel companions you have to split the costs.

These days, the fuel price is relatively high, and if you’re planning on road-tripping soon – the price of gas could influence the price of your trip.

That said, there are other things to consider when you travel by car.

For example, do you need to pay for tolls on the way? And what about parking?

Some destinations have expensive tolls (looking at you, Italy).

You could save a bit by booking accommodation with free parking or by avoiding tolls on the way.

5. There Is The Risk Of Theft

There is always the risk that your belongings will get stolen while you are away from the vehicle.

While theft can happen anywhere, if you’re travelling by car through a dangerous country, the chances are much higher.

Even so, practicing caution will reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Never leave your belongings in plain sight, take valuables with you, park under lights at night, and get travel insurance that covers theft.

10 Advantages of Traveling by Car: The Experiences Will Be More Interesting Than You Think

author avatar

Summer is coming, and you are thinking about a long trip with friends and family. Nowadays, many facilities and amenities can make your trip unforgettable. With each destination and its geological features, you can choose to travel in different modes of transport to suit your needs. From motorcycles, bicycles, trains, yachts, and cars, all are practical vehicles for your journey to every road. To get more helpful information on some worth-noticed advantages of traveling by car , let start with Car From Japan right now.

Advantages of Traveling by Car: Starting Your Journey With Your Beloved Modes of Transportation

We probably don’t need to talk much about the effects of self-driving vehicles on a comfortable until-last-minute ride. Prominent among them are cars, whether rented or personal.

Overall, cars are always convenient and necessary in modern life because of their powerful engine and high performance. Not only that, their available amenities in the cabin can always keep you in the best condition and comfort. Choosing a car for your family’s trip brings safe, high-quality experiences, and helps family members reduce fatigue while protecting everyone’s health to the maximum extent. Let’s take a closer look at the reasons that can convince you to pick a car as the ultimate choice for any trip.

1. Flexibility Schedule

Traveling by car on your long journey may be memorable as your schedule will become flexible and at your discretion. A private car is a good choice for any personal schedule. You can go anywhere and do whatever you want.

When unexpected events break out, you may not want to follow the old schedules of the day and get stuck as you have to wait for the train, bus, or plane to come. For drivers with a comfortable lifestyle that is not constrained to any plans and arrangements, the car can completely meet their needs.

2. Eat Well On Planned Budget

A private car is not only a means of getting to your destination, but it’s also a great way to roam around the areas once you’re there, especially when you’re looking for places to have a meal within a day.

Typical visitors from the outer areas often stick to the downtown or city to take advantage of mobility. However, these are places where the food price adds up quite a bit (or to a great extent). You won’t find affordable food in the middle of busy streets, especially in every peak travel season or summer times. That will be a waste if you have already been to the long-awaited city but experiencing not-so-good meals and pushed services

If you’re traveling by car, it’s easy to find something that fits your budget while ensuring quality. Just a further drive to the suburb or park a car to inspect some narrow streets in less crowded areas, you will not disappoint with the delicious food that lots of unreputed places offer and this great benefit of traveling by car in the first place.

You can travel in a private car and bring a portable pot or oven. This allows you to make the most of inexpensive ingredients, cooking delicious and healthy meals on the go. If you want some outdoor fun, you can always cook at the local campsites, which are considered hotspots for creative travelers who love to cook.

3. Comfortable And Privacy

Instead of sitting in the straight line of strangers that may potentially spend a whole silent trip with you, if traveling by car, you can be more enjoyable and have time to admire the surrounded sceneries in full comfort.

Moreover, when using trains or public transportation, you will have to face some unexpected situations such as losing traveling tickets, stuff being stolen, cramped sitting position, and being caught in a spontaneous fight with drunk strangers in the middle of the road.

If you feel boring, you can always take the music, and together with your friends and family enjoy the vibrant music.

benefits of travelling by car

With that said, overall, cars will be the companion to bring the most convenient comfort and utmost privacy for you on long-term trips.

4. Bring More Stuff

Carrying more loads of luggage is a benefit that everyone feels most obvious when choosing to travel by car. Especially on long trips that need tons of luggage as well as a place to stuff souvenirs and gifts to people at home, traveling by car is the most effective and optimal choice.

Struggling to carry heavy things on the train or full by your hands can make you tired and sloppy when moving on the street. In many cases, you can also forget, drop some items, even get a bad person followed along the way. If you choose public vehicles instead of private cars, please be careful and only bring the most necessary things to you.

5. Health Protection

One of the most unexpected advantages of traveling by car is ensuring safety to the maximum and getting it under your control. With the high quality of one car trip, every family member will not have to go through too-tired times when being on public transport with the complex and hard-to-command environment.

Not only that, but cars will protect your and your family’s health and life at its best. Can cover rain, sunlight, heat, dust,…, car trips will help guard your baby and elder’s health in the most comprehensive way.

In general, health is the most precious thing in life. Be healthy on your every travel trip to get chances to explore new lands, as well as help children learn numerous beautiful things around.

6. More Places To Visit

With the urge to explore every nook and cranny when you’re in an unfamiliar place, finding the suitable vehicle for your road trips can be difficult and time-consuming. If you travel by any transportation type that separates from you once geting to the new location, you are likely to walk or have to rent a bike and ride in significant distances to visit everyplace as you wish.

Enduring all unpleasant acts in such a short time will make your moment of realization come in the shape of flashlights, that is in the first place, you should have chosen something more practical than your foot in your supposed-to-relax times.

When traveling by boat or plane, you are limited in spots between the starting point and the destination. But if traveling by private car, you can go anywhere your four wheels can if it is still powerful and show enthusiasts without any limitation.

If you come to a big city, a car will allow you to visit suburban, where all the good places lie, such as restaurants and museums. Along the road, you can also stop by small villages and local shops to experience the fresh taste of places and people there.

7. No Security And Ticket-Checking

You may be familiar with situations of being inspected and checked by security staff or even the police once you step your foot into the new area as an outsider.

Keeping the transporting tickets can cause many inconveniences, especially for those who do not have this ticket-holding habit and are prone to forget things that are not familiar.

traveling by train

Therefore, traveling by private car is added another point for being complete protection of your forgettable mind.

8. Carrying Luggage Around Easily

The ease of transporting your belongings anywhere is also one of the most visible advantages of traveling by car .

With a car and ample storage space, you can bring and carry whatever you need for a long trip and pile it up with no problem. Moving between tourist destinations will become easier and lighter than ever when you have a car served as your effective porter without any complaints.

However, you should careful not to load too much stuff into the car and always keep the interior space clean and tidy . Your trip will be much more comfortable and refreshing than being packed in a cabin with dozens of things.

9. Have Quick Safe Places To Sleep

You have a lot of places to rest when heading to the destination. And most people will choose hotels or motels to be exposed to comfortable and safe amenities in strange places.

Without cars, you will want to find a location as close to the city center as possible to be convenient for moving and playing. On the other hand, if you have a car, you will not be limited to one or two, or even out-of-room hotels in the cramped city center.

There are many good accommodation options away from the city a bit more. Not taking care of carefully planned tours before, some spontaneous trips can make you fall into a situation where the accommodation can not find any accommodations around. But don’t worry, your car will always be there. If there is no good place to stay, you can call it a night while sleeping in your vehicle comfortably.

For those who don’t mind spending time in nature, camping by car is also an interesting option. If carrying tents, you can save room rental costs. Make sure you know the rules of camps and parks that you intend to visit.

10. Family And Friend Bonding

For family members to be closer, you can choose to travel by car as life is increasingly improved and developed today. Traveling with your close-knit family will help all members create positive mental impacts, thereby feeling happy and loving each other more.

Having fun with loved ones on family trips not only enables you all to spend quality time together but also breaks the monotony of the schedule.

Memories with family such as eating and going out will probably become the most beautiful impressions that each person cannot forget. When people get older, they will have their jobs and lives to take care of. It will be very hard to build up memories when that times come.

Is Going on a Road Trip Right For You?

advantages travelling by car

The idea of hopping in a car and setting off into the horizon on a Kerouacian adventure is a timeless notion for the ultimate vacation: exploring the rugged scenery, visiting pristine landscapes, and sleeping in a new place every night. The reality of a road trip is that it actually requires a significant amount of planning , especially for long trips that span several days and cover hundreds—if not thousands—of miles.

Traveling by car has a lot of unique benefits, but you also have to consider the drawbacks before deciding if a road trip is the right vacation for you. Cost and time are two of the most important factors but are by no means the only ones. Weight out these considerations before you set off.

Reasons to Go on a Road Trip

You are in charge.

You control your departure time, arrival time, itinerary, and stops along the way . You don't have to pay attention to train schedules or airline routes as you plan your trip. If you see something interesting on the side of the road, you can stop and take a look. This freedom and flexibility of traveling by car is perhaps the biggest perk of a road trip, and its value can't be overstated.

You Can Change Your Mind

If you don't like a particular place, you can just drive away. There's no waiting for the next flight or hassling over train schedules. Last-minute decisions are easy to make and they don't have to throw off your entire trip. In the same vein, it's just as easy to stay somewhere you're really enjoying. Maybe what was supposed to be a quick pitstop ends up being a place with a lot of potential that you want to explore more. No problem, just stay.

You Can See the Real World

Taking a road trip allows you to get off the beaten path and see actual communities and natural wonders, not just a train track or a view from 36,000 feet. Meandering through the countryside is a great way to relax and find out what it's really like to live in a particular area. Farmers' markets, local festivals, and state parks are yours to explore.

You Can Pack Anything That Fits Into Your Trunk

You can use the back seat, too. You don't have to pay extra to bring the items you need, either. If you plan to bring camping gear or sports equipment, packing it in a car is easier than transporting it by bus or train. Just make sure you have a safe way to lock up valuable items. A car that appears to be overflowing with goods can be an easy target for theft.

You Can Save Money

Even when you factor in wear and tear on your car, going on a road trip can be a frugal way to travel, especially if you're traveling with a group. Taking four people somewhere by car is usually less expensive than buying four round-trip airplane, bus, or train tickets. You can split the costs for gas and hotel rooms, or if you're camping it could be even cheaper. Since you have the freedom to stop and eat wherever you like, you can choose affordable restaurants or pick-up items in a local grocery store to eat in the car.

Reasons to Think Twice About a Road Trip

Driving takes time.

Driving is one of the slowest ways to travel between two points, especially between large cities with good rail and airline service. If you are planning a city-to-city trip, you can save a lot of time by taking the train or flying to your destination.

You Have to Do All the Work

From route planning and prepping your car to navigation and spending hours behind the wheel, it's all up to you. Trip planning is always a big task, but road trip planning requires even more forethought and organization. Sometimes it is easier to let someone else do the planning—and the driving. It's exhausting to be behind the wheel for hours at a time, especially if you'll be on the road for days. Having multiple drivers in the car helps to alleviate that, so share the responsibilities if you can.

You Have to Park the Car

In some cities, finding parking can be very difficult. High city parking rates are not fun to deal with, either, and can quickly eat up any cost savings you've gained by taking the car. If you're planning to be in smaller towns or natural areas, you shouldn't have as much of a problem. But if any one of your pitstops is a big city, plan ahead and research the cheapest and safest parking options for your car.

Traveling by Car Can Be Expensive

For solo travelers, in particular, taking a road trip might not save you money, especially when you factor in gas , tolls , parking, meals, and lodging along the way. In fact, depending on the length of the trip and where you stay, it can end up being much more costly than having taken another form of transportation. Even if you make a strict budget, unexpected costs such as a hapless breakdown can really throw a wrench at you.

Wear and Tear on Your Car Costs Money

You don't have to only worry about breakdowns, but also general wear and tear on your car. Long trips can really do damage to a vehicle, especially if it's an older model. If your car isn't up to the journey, you might be better off renting a vehicle instead.

You Have to Get Back

Planning your big road trip sounds fantastic and fun, but don't forget you have to get back to where you started. Unless you're in a situation where you can leave your car at the destination, you'll have to drive back to the starting point as well. Make sure you're mentally prepared not only for the initial journey but also for repeating it almost immediately after. However, you can make this easier by taking a different route home to shake things up.

Making Your Road Trip Decision

It is always a good idea to break out your trusty calculator and add up your travel costs before deciding how to get to your destination. Traveling by car is not necessarily the cheapest or easiest way to go. You may decide that time is more important than money. In this case, flying might be your best option. Taking the train might be a better choice for city-to-city travel, especially if you will not need a car at your destination.

In the end, the most important consideration is the type of trip that you're looking for. Faster transports are for those who want the destination city to be the vacation. But if you care more about the journey, then driving is the best way to truly experience not just point A and point B, but the infinite number of places between them. Even if it takes more time or ends up costing more, perhaps it's worth it.

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car

If you don’t like using public transport and prefer to travel by yourself in your own vehicle, then this article is for you. Today I’m sharing some of the pros and cons of travelling by car that might help you decide whether or not this way of exploring is suitable for you.

In reality, everything in the world has its ups and downs, and if you want to make the best decision, you should weigh up the good with the bad. So lets have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car .

Pros of Travelling by Car

Let’s start with the advantages for travelling by car, since it is more fun to find the good in things than to criticize!

Flexibility

Flexibility   is one of the biggest pros of travelling by car. You can stop as much as you like, drive at your own pace, and simply enjoy the freedom of a road trip.

No one is dictating where you can and can’t stop and you can choose how much you want to drive in one day before stopping overnight.

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car - The Trusted Traveller

Another benefit of travelling by car is that your beloved pets can join you if you choose this mode of transport. Pets are not usually welcomed on planes or trains, and when they are it is usually pretty stressful for them.

Car rides can be fun for your pets, so nothing is stopping you from taking your pet to have an adventure with you! Just ensure you prepare your car appropriately in order to keep everyone safe.

Unlike on a plane there’s no baggage limit, you can take almost the entire house with you. Well, not literally, but you can definitely pack everything you think is essential for such a trip.

No worrying while in the queue at the airport to check in if your bag in underweight or not, just simple throw everything you think you may need in the car and off you go.

Better Views

A better view   is another of the great advantages of travelling by car. When you travel by plane your view is limited and sometimes covered in cloud. If you choose to see the world from a ship, all you will see is water in every direction.

But if you pick a car as your transport, you will be able to see many beautiful villages, hills, and small towns along your drive. And you will always be able to stop and take some pictures.

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car - The Trusted Traveller

Money Saving

Another great benefit of travelling by car is that it can save a bit of money. This works when you are travelling with a bunch of friends who can all chip in for gas. And, if your car is large enough, you can even skip renting a room and just simply sleep in your car.

Driving is considered to be a much cheaper way   to travel, because you can control your finances easier and simply be more flexible when it comes to spending your money.

Cons of Travelling by Car

Now let’s get to the biggest disadvantages of travelling by car.

Long Distances

Well, let’s be honest. Driving takes a hell of a long time. You can sometimes drive for hours, and still not reach your destination. You can’t reach every part of the world with a car. You can’t drive through the ocean to travel to Australia , for instance.

In general, if you choose a car as your way to travel, you will have to travel only where you can drive your car, and that means you might not be able to travel everywhere.

If you choose to fly somewhere overseas, you always have the option to rent a car when you arrive, turning this con into a pro. Hertz has great car hire options with comparative prices, keeping your costs down while also allowing you to explore an overseas destination by car.

The Pros and Cons of Travelling by Car - The Trusted Traveller

Bad Weather

Another disadvantage of travelling by car is that bad weather   can have a serious impact on your trip. Rain, snow and storms can all change driving conditions and might even ruin your whole road trip if you’re not prepared.

Consider the weather before taking off on the road and be honest about your driving skills, too. Driving under these conditions can be a challenge for some and can be dangerous not just to you, but others on the road if you’re not properly prepared .

Hidden Costs

Finally, the last con of travelling by car is that before any kind of road trip, you definitely need to prepare your car   for the long haul, and that might require additional finances and time. Ensure you spend some time checking your car for road worthiness.

Also, consider investing in a few car essentials, especially if you are planning to hit the road long term or with your children. And don’t forget the small but helpful gadgets you can use in a car, like phone or cup holders, a GPS, or sun visors. These all make your road trip that little more enjoyable!

Journey Beyond the Horizon

Traveling the world by car- pros, cons, and useful tips

Traveling by car is one of the most convenient ways to explore the world. You have the freedom to choose your own itinerary, your own schedule, and in some cases (or if you are more adventurous)- your own place to spend the night. You can jump in the car, and the whole Earth is in front of you! Or maybe it is not as easy as it looks like? Let’s get deeper into this question.

Table of Contents

Exploring the Earth

Our planet is full of images, colors, landscapes, and a lot of beauty. And every traveler has this passion to explore all of this. Although every point of its surface has its own charm, there are certain points called “travel destinations”, “places to see”, “points of interest” or the more popular of them- “landmarks”. But what is beyond these points?

While many tourists aim only at these points of interest, some travelers are interested in what is “between them”- not only points but routes that connect the points. This is a whole new level of traveling- in this way, travelers can penetrate much deeper into the geography of the Earth.

You can roam around our world by various means of transportation- by plane, by train, by bus, by ferry, by car, by motorbike, by bicycle, or just on foot. Unfortunately, no transportation way can reach every point on the surface of the Earth- water, land, plains, mountains, glaciers, deserts, etc. If you want to wander on all of these types of surfaces, you have to change your way of transportation.

Wandering around the world by vehicle

Ways of transportation

All of these means of transportation have their pros and cons. Planes are fast and can fly over all of these types of surfaces, but only from above- you can’t see almost anything. Trains and buses are not as fast as planes but they are limited to travel only on certain roads (or railroads).

Ferries and boats are designed only for the water surface. Motorbikes and bicycles give you much more freedom, but they are too slow- you would need much more time to explore a larger area of the Earth.

And how about car driving?

Explore the world by car

So, you have your car (it can be your own car, a car of your friend, or a rental car). If it is an RV or just a van, it can be even your “moving hotel” too. You have your time and your budget. The world is in front of you. You prepare your luggage and just go. But can you really explore the whole world by your car?

If you start your driving trip from the US or Canada, you can explore these two countries (except for most of the middle and northern parts of Canada, and of course, without the Canadian Archipelago). You can go further south into the countries of Central America, but only on the continent. And you have to stop in Panama, in the so-called Darien Gap- an area with rainforests, swamps, lakes, and no roads.

Or, if you start your trip from Europe, you can easily explore Europe… but only Europe (easily). Yes, you can proceed further into Asia- through Turkey and Iran, or Russia. However, it requires a much more adventurous state of mind, because such travel can be more difficult and even dangerous.

By car on off-the-beaten-path

Countries with closures, restrictions, or other problems

Some countries would be closed to you. For example, you can’t enter China (actually, you can, but it is complicated). Other countries are closed simply because their land borders are closed (for example- the border between Syria and Israel).

Similar problems can be found in South America and Africa- mainly border restrictions and regulations, bad roads, and in Africa- local conflicts. Concerning Australia, Indonesia, and every island, the limit is obvious- the ocean.

Combining different ways of transportation

In other words- only by car, you can freely travel only in some parts of the world, not the whole world. To extend your travel range, you have to use ferries or cargo ships. Or, of course, you can just leave your car at home, go to another continent (or an island) and rent a car there.

To travel on off-road and wild terrain without roads, you have to leave your car (yes, by 4×4 vehicle you can partially penetrate to some point, but this still has its limits) and proceed by bike, camel, horse, canoe, or just on foot.

Your "wandering hotel"

Different traffic directions, traffic chaos

Another problem can be the different driving directions- in most countries, you drive on the right side of the road, but in some countries, the traffic is on the left side (like the UK, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and more). It can confuse drivers who haven’t gotten used to switching different sides of the road. Add to this the usually chaotic traffic in most of the exotic countries, and driving there can become a serious challenge.

Crossing the borders

And of course, the borders between countries, autonomous regions, or restricted areas with their checkpoints, and all the required documents, permits, etc. Sometimes it can be easy (just with some queue waiting), but sometimes can be difficult, requiring months of obtaining the necessary documents in advance. And sometimes crossing can be impossible.

However, there is an important document that can resolve some of these troubles. This is the International Driver’s License which “opens” more borders in front of you and your car.

An important document

International Driver’s License

You should have your own local Driving License. But it doesn’t mean that every other country would recognize it. So, you may need an International Driver’s License, called also International Driving Permit (IDP).

Yes, usually, if the official language of the country you drive is the same as the language of your Driving License, you would not need an IDP. But if the language is different, an IDP is advisable. Various countries have different rules about it and you can check in advance whether you need an IDP or not.

The IDP doesn’t replace your original local Driving License. Essentially, it only “translates” it in several languages. So, when you drive in countries that require IDP, you still have to bring your local Driving License too.

Obtaining an International Driver’s License

Today, you can easily get International Driver’s License . There are options to choose an IDP for 1, 2, or 3 years. You can also choose a digital + printed version, or only a digital version (cheaper). You can follow the process quickly, then just track your order until you get it.

More documents and money

So, an IDP could significantly resolve some troubles when you drive in various countries in the world. But there is more- insurance, road tolls or vignettes, etc. You have to prepare all of these documents in advance, to avoid fines or other troubles. You don’t need all of the documents above if you travel by bike, but a car is different.

And of course, you need fuel, and fuel needs money. So, you have to plan your budget in advance. Traveling by car can be quite expensive for a solo traveler, but usually, a cheaper option if you travel with your family or friends.

Damage and accidents

One of the worst things that may happen during your driving trip is the car damage. It depends on where it may happen- if it is in a city, you can easily bring it to a car repair service. But if you are in the middle of a desert… that’s a problem.

You definitelly don't want this

So, it is always good to educate yourself at least on the basics of car management and if possible, to bring some spare parts and other useful things with you. Depending on the damage, it would not necessarily resolve the problem but still can increase the chances of repairing. I would advise drivers to check their cars in a repair service before a long trip- if there are hidden problems, they can prevent more serious damage in advance.

But that’s not the worst. The worst is a car accident with injuries or even lives lost. Yes, you should have your insurance and it can help later, but it can’t prevent an accident. So, follow the traffic rules everywhere and always be cautious!

The pros of traveling by car

On the other side, let’s remember the pros of traveling by car. You have full freedom on your schedule. You can go where public transportation doesn’t go. If you drive a van, an RV, or another big enough vehicle, you can use it as your “hotel”, as already said. Also, you can enjoy the landscape around you all the time (but you better stop somewhere for photos, don’t drive and look around at the same time!), being protected from the environment outside- heat, wind, rain, cold.

And finally, with proper preparation, by combining a car with other means of transportation, you can still reach the farthest frontiers on our planet!

10 Reasons to Travel by Car

January 11, 2021 by Eva Thaler Leave a Comment

advantages travelling by car

Those are great. But there is one “but”. All of them are costly. Most probably, you don’t want to spend too much money on vacation during a pandemic, do you? If not, there is an alternative: you can travel by car.

“Well, plane traveling is faster” – you might think right away. Yes, it is. However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spend near 40-50% of their vacation budgets on transport. Half of your money is gone only to deliver you from point A to point B. Still, flight delays, expensive tickets and ill-mannered co-travelers can spoil any trip ultimately.

A car is different. Here are 10 reasons why traveling by car is worth it. Before packing your bags for a car trip, don’t forget to check the best roof top tent review . You’ll be pleased to have one of those with you.

You Can Save Time What’s the longest period of any car trip? Mostly, getting to the first travel point is what takes most of your time. After that, the time-saving advantages of a car trip become undisputed.

Think about that. You don’t need to plan your route sticking to bus or train schedules. You are free to choose your own movement speed. And finally, after you watched all the places you wanted in a location, you jump in a car and move to the next point on your map. That’s it.

You Can Save Money The lack of money is not a reason to refuse your good rest. When planned correctly, a car trip can become a very cost-efficient way to travel. Here are some recommendations to help you avoid too big expenses: • Choose a closer place. It is possible to find something interesting even in 2 hours of driving from your location • Cook and pack meals on your own. Try not to buy pre-cooked food and not to eat in road restaurants • Watch after promos, use cashback opportunities • Visit free events: find them via Facebook geotags, check the local tourist guide or read your neighborhood’s newspaper online

A Car is a Moving House You can spend a night in a car wherever you want and whenever you need. It’s not always possible to plan your routes while traveling by public transport. Moreover, there can be no places in hotel rooms. With a car and a roof tent, any site will become suitable for a night stay.

Take Whatever You Want with You The only limit for your luggage here is the size of your car. There is no need to worry about the weight of your cases, or the size of your backpack. With a car, anything you want may be taken with you: from your favorite snacks to a training suit.

International Conflicts Sometimes it is impossible to pass the borders between countries on public transport because of conflict situations and local political solutions. These problems pass away when you travel by your own car.

Random Stops While traveling by car, you can stop in a place you want. You won’t depend on the will of some other driver who has the only goal to deliver you to the destination point as quickly as possible. After a stop, it is comfortable and pleasant to enjoy landscapes and take pictures. You never know which place will make you enjoy it so much to make a stop beforehand.

Non-Typical Places Usually, tourist routes and places of interest in most countries are… standardized. Locals know what to show newcomers, and every traveler can see the same sites like everyone else. Traveling by car lets you choose your destination points personally. There exist places unseen by tourists because no public transport can bring them there. Isn’t it great to make your trip unique?

Pets with You Are you afraid to leave your pet at home alone? Then take it with you. A pet won’t tell you how to drive, it won’t have a bad mood or argue about visiting a certain café. Just don’t forget to take enough food and water for it, and take care of a comfortable place somewhere in a car.

Road is a Trip Too Traveling by car lets you enjoy the road. It would be cool if you try thinking of driving itself as a part of your journey. Enjoy magnificent views and landscapes, listen to podcasts and audiobooks you always wanted to read, or just speak with your close ones. A roadtrip is excellent to become even closer to each other.

All in One That is probably the most important reason to prefer traveling by car instead of any other tourism. When on a car, you can visit not a single place, city or country per one time, but see any of them you want. The distance, duration, and the route of your trip depend only on you. Isn’t it cool?

Travelling is one of those activities we all enjoy. However, not every aspect of travelling is equally exciting. Transportation is one of those things you have to plan ahead for. You have many options and they all have their benefits and drawbacks. Some make scheduling difficult and others are much more expensive than they should be. A lot of people enjoy travelling by themselves in their own personal vehicle. There's something about going on a long road trip surrounded by the music you choose that is liberating. Here are some of the most compelling reasons why you should use a car for your travelling needs.

1. You spend a lot less money on food

advantages travelling by car

Cars aren't just useful for getting near your chosen destination, they are a great way to move around town once you're already there. When you're looking around for places to eat, having a car can come in handy. Visitors and tourists often stick to the strict centre of a city in order to get the most of their trip. Unfortunately, this is where the cost of food is inflated quite a bit. You won't find very affordable cuisine in the middle of the busiest street in town. Even if you make your way to the peripheral parts, it's still relatively expensive to find a fulfilling meal.

On the other hand, if you have a car with you, it becomes much easier to find something that is affordable. You can always visit the surrounding towns and their markets. As long as you have a place to cook, this can cut back your food expenses by a significant amount.

Some travellers might bring a portable cooker or oven with them on their trip. This allows you to take full advantage of cheap materials and it will allow you to cook delicious and healthy meals on the go. If you like having a little outdoor fun to go along with your meals, you can always cook on local campsites, they're considered a hotbed for creative tourists that like to cook.

2. You have more variety when travelling

advantages travelling by car

When you find yourself in an unfamiliar place, you probably want to explore every nook and cranny that is available to you. This means taking long walks and tours all over the town and countryside. Sometimes, the place you visit is a fair bit larger than expected. You can't cover everything on foot and finding the right kind of public transportation can be difficult and time-consuming. What if you want to explore the countryside, or perhaps you want to visit a nearby area which is famous for its vineyards?

When you travel by boat or plane, your transport is limited to the back and forth trip between your original spot and the destination. It’s a completely different story when you have a personal vehicle at your disposal. You can go wherever your four wheels can take you. This means you aren’t limited to walking distances within a city. Surrounding historical ruins and mountainsides are available for exploration and you won’t break a sweat trying to find them. At most, you might need a map on your phone to guide you on the road to these places.

If you're visiting a big city, a car allows you to visit a restaurant and museums on the fringes. It's not uncommon for the best attractions in town to be somewhere far away from the centre. The only issue you might run into is parking. To avoid paying exorbitant parking fees and looking for parking spaces in the city centre, you could always leave your car further away. After all, while you’re in the middle of town, you probably won’t need your car since you’re exploring on foot. Consider it a tool to get to places that are a bit out of your reach when walking.

3. Take all the essentials

advantages travelling by car

Luggage isone of those things that plague every long trip. You have to make sure you’ve brought only the bare essentials while still having enough items to make your life comfortable. This can be a problem when travelling by boat or plane. You can’t take everything with you, which means you have to make some sacrifices. Your wardrobe is going to be limited for the trip, whether you like it or not. Having additional luggage on you will cost you extra, but it’s still an option with most airlines.

Extra luggage isn’t a problem when you’re on the road on your own. Whatever fits in your trunk is fair game. Any and all luxuries you take are at your disposal. If you want to take a portable mini fridge just to keep beers in, it’s all on you. You can take quite a bit of your wardrobe with you, which means you aren’t limited to the same three shirts for the whole trip.

4. Planning becomes a breeze

advantages travelling by car

Travelling can be a bit of a pain when it comes to planning things ahead. For starters, you have to come up with a location to visit. Hotels and other kinds of accommodation aren’t always available or affordable for the trip and it’s hard to find something that is close to your chosen destination. You have to bring a lot of luggage along with you and that can pose its own problem. On top of all that, there’s still one crucial element you have to get right: transportation.

If you plan on travelling far and wide, your method of transportation needs to be accounted for. This can be even more hectic than finding the right hotel. A lot of people opt to buy plane tickets to head to their destination. Planes have a host of issues associated with them. If you’re travelling by plane, don’t even think about being a minute late to the airport. You’re going to miss your flight and have to reschedule. You’re limited in what you can bring along with you because of extreme security measures and high costs of transportation. If there is no airport near the place you’re visiting, tough luck.

Schedules are hardly a problem when it comes to travelling by car. You can pack your bags and go whenever you please. If you fancy taking a trip in the middle of the night, nobody can stop you. You can do as you see fit. All you need is a full tank of gas and enough room in your trunk to put your luggage in.

Even car maintenance won't slow you down all that much. Every vehicle needs a thorough look before a long road trip. You should take the necessary precautions and take it for a check-up at an auto repair service , and it won’t take longer than a couple of hours. It’s certainly much quicker than waiting in lines at an airport.

5. Accommodation is much easier

advantages travelling by car

You have a wide variety of places to rest when travelling. Most people opt for hotels villas when they go abroad. If you lack a car, you’ll probably want to get a place that is located as close to the city centre as possible. This way, walking to and from locations of interest is made much easier. On the other hand, if you have a car, you aren’t limited to a small number of hotels in the strict city centre.

There are a lot of options for accommodation a bit farther away from the city. Things like bed & breakfasts and villas are the ideal choice if you can drive to and from them as you please.

More spontaneous travellers might find themselves in situations where they can't find a place to stay on short notice. Luckily, your vehicle is always there for you. When push comes to shove, you can always spend a single night in your car. Your travel pillow will come in handy.

For those who don’t mind spending time in nature, camping is always an option . If you bring a high-quality tent along with you, you can save up a pretty penny in accommodation. Make sure you know the rules of the camps and parks you plan on visiting. You can’t start a campfire everywhere due to the danger of spreading it.

advantages travelling by car

Picking the right transportation method is a crucial part of the travelling experience. Some people like to get to their destination as quick as possible, which is why they choose airfare. Others prefer the luxury and comfort of an ocean cruiser and they don't mind if the trip takes a while. For many, cars are the ideal way to traverse long distances. They allow you to take certain liberties along the road. You can always change course if you find something that piques your interest and no two trips are ever the same. There are lots of practical benefits that can make automobile travel attractive to just about anyone looking to hit the road. As long as you prepare adequately, you'll find that cars really are the best choice.

^Advantages Of Traveling By Car: Flexibility

The pandemic has really changed the way we travel. Safety has been heightened and not just the usual procedures are implemented on airports, but health protocols, social distancing, are on double check.

And as worldwide travel becomes at ease, and mask-wearing isn’t as compulsory in many airlines and airports around the world, we can finally go relax and visit the cities we were supposed to before the lockdowns. If you are still unsure, traveling to nearer cities is a good option.

If you can drive, it is very much an advantage too. You can enjoy the breeze and the beautiful view going around the coasts. If you are contemplating on buying a car you can use on your travels, you can calculate the expenses using https://carpaymentcalculator.net . For example,  a Honda HR-V is a good choice, it is one of the best cars for long distance driving, and here is the breakdown for you:

For a Honda HR-V costing $22,000.00 using a 6.00-year (or 72-payment) loan at a 6.00000% APR, your monthly payment will be $232.02. With a down payment of $8,000.00 ( making a downpayment has great benefits ), trade-in of $0.00, amount owed on trade-in ($0.00), rebate ($0.00), sales taxes (1.00%), calculated along with if rebates were applied to the down payment or if sales taxes were added to the loan, the calculated loan amount is $14,000.00, which meant that you would pay $2,705.47 in interest over the life of the loan, bringing the total purchase cost to $24,925.47. This amount does not include other vehicle-related expenses including gasoline, maintenance & insurance. You can calculate fuel budget here .

Traveling by car has  advantages and disadvantages, and here are some of the benefits.

Table of Contents

Travel At Your Own Pace

When you drive to your destination, you can go on your schedule and have complete control over the time of your trip. You can go at your own pace (following allowed speed) and then stop whenever needed and wherever you like.

You drop the timetables when you travel by car –  you do not worry about missing flights or buses, or getting stressed about delays. You can also easily change your route to avoid traffic jams.

You can, for example, go on a road trip, drive to San Francisco and enjoy the scenic views while on your car, stopping here and there on famous spots throughout the day. And retire to your accommodation at night.

Advantages Of Traveling By Car

Take the Route Less Traveled

To get to a destination faster, it is best to use highways. But you can choose to travel through routes within cities, taking photos of hills, parks, and even towns.

Privacy and Comfort

If you have a bigger car, traveling gives you comfort and privacy that you can’t have when traveling with strangers, which also has advantages of its own. Traveling in your own car means being at ease, as you bond with the people you love. You also don’t need to worry about getting your stuff taken away, which unfortunately happens on public transport at times. You can sleep and know that you will get to your destination without a missing luggage.

Advantages Of Traveling By Car

Have More Stuff

If you are not one who pack light, traveling by car is the best way to go. You can bring everything but the kitchen sink as you go, making sure there’s also enough space for everyone else.

This also saves you time, as you don’t need to queue up and wait for luggage as you would in the airport. And gets you less stressed when you are over the allowed baggage weight.

Can Bring Pets

If you have pets and no one to leave them with when you travel, having a car and bringing them along is the best solution. Pets may of course behave differently when you travel, but if you do it often, it is a great start to a travel adventure. You just need to prepare well for car travel with pets, ensuring their safety as you would with your kids.

Advantages Of Traveling By Car

See More Scenery

Traveling by plane, you mostly see the sky, which is pretty too. Traveling by ship, you mostly see water, and beautiful mountain landscapes at times, but if you travel by car, you will be able to see more of the landscapes and stop to actually enjoy the majestic views God has created. As mentioned above, you can take the route less traveled, on your own pace, and document every moment as you would.

Less Expensive

With a car, you may worry about parking and fuel, but if you are traveling with friends, you can pitch in a little which is still less than the amount you would pay for a plane ticket. You can easily go from point A to point B without thinking about tickets and penalty for not having tickets when you ride public transportation.

Less Risk Of Contact

Traveling by car also gives you a certain safety net. In these times, social distancing is encouraged so avoiding crowds is indeed necessary. Having your own means of transportation mean not having to queue on lines, getting in crowded buses or trains, and typically a lesser chance of contracting viruses.

We really would like to go back to our normal way of traveling, but for now, by car is the safest way to go. Stay safe!

THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks of Travelling by Car

  • Anthony H Gonzales
  • May 22, 2023

Car travel holds a unique allure for those who harbor an adventurous spirit, encapsulating the intoxicating blend of freedom, spontaneity, and intimacy with the journey that few other travel mediums offer. The open road invites you to immerse yourself in the landscape, to take detours off the beaten path, and to experience the joy of serendipitous discoveries. However, it’s essential to recognize that car travel, like any form of transportation, comes with its distinct set of advantages and disadvantages. Discovering that and understanding is vital for travelers, as it equips them with the necessary insights to tailor their travel experiences to their preferences, needs, and constraints.

The Ultimate Car Travel Perks

Undoubtedly, one of the most appealing advantages of car travel is the remarkable level of freedom and flexibility it offers. In contrast to the rigid schedules of packaged tours or public transport, car travel empowers you with complete autonomy over your itinerary. You can linger in a location that captures your interest, alter your route on a whim, or venture off into less-trodden paths, liberating you from the confines of pre-planned schedules. This degree of flexibility is especially rewarding for travelers with an exploratory spirit, who wish to escape the crowded tourist hotspots and delve into authentic local experiences.

advantages travelling by car

Economical Considerations

Car travel costs can vary extensively, influenced by factors such as fuel prices, vehicle efficiency, maintenance requirements, and the total travel distance. Often, for group travels or family vacations, opting for car travel can prove significantly more economical than purchasing individual plane or train tickets. However, one must also account for additional expenses such as toll fees, parking charges, and the costs associated with potential car repairs or maintenance issues during the trip. These financial elements demand careful planning and prudent budgeting, but with the right strategy, car travel can offer considerable savings, particularly for extended journeys.

The Comfort Factor in Car Travel

One of the most compelling advantages that car travel provides is the personal comfort and convenience it affords. Public transport often cannot match the level of comfort you enjoy in your own vehicle, where you can control the environment to your liking. You can stop whenever and wherever you desire, stretch your legs, snack at your leisure, or even take a power nap. Moreover, traveling by car eliminates the stress associated with packing restrictions, allowing you to bring along all your essential belongings without the worry of excess baggage. However, the comfort level during your journey can also be influenced by the condition and features of your vehicle. Investing in quality upgrades, can greatly enhance your driving comfort, especially during long trips or when traversing challenging terrains.

Environmental Implications

However, we must also address the significant environmental implications associated with car travel. Cars, particularly older models or those in need of maintenance, can contribute substantially to air pollution and climate change. Although electric and hybrid vehicles offer more environmentally-friendly alternatives, their environmental impact still remains notably higher than public transportation or non-motorized options. Therefore, for the environmentally conscious traveler, the ecological footprint of car travel might present a significant drawback.

Safety Concerns in Car Travel

Despite the sense of control that driving provides, car travel also brings with it certain safety challenges. Road accidents, potential mechanical breakdowns in isolated areas, and the physical stress of long-distance driving are serious considerations. Navigating unfamiliar territories or managing difficult driving conditions can also add to the inherent stress of travel. However, these risks can be managed with appropriate measures such as regular vehicle checks and maintenance, staying abreast of weather conditions, and ensuring adequate rest to avoid driver fatigue.

In essence, the decision to travel by car involves a careful assessment of both its appealing advantages and its potential drawbacks. The unparalleled freedom, flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and comfort that car travel offers are indeed enticing. However, it’s essential to also consider the environmental impact and safety concerns it may present. Ultimately, the decision should be informed by your individual preferences, budget, travel goals, and the specific circumstances of your journey. It’s about choosing wisely and responsibly, to create a travel experience that is not only enjoyable and memorable but also respectful of the environment and mindful of personal safety. For those who value a lifestyle free from constraints, a car is the ideal choice, allowing you to travel on your own terms.

See More Scenery

Car driving often provides the most captivating opportunity to enjoy beautiful landscapes. It allows you to pause your journey for a closer look or a leisurely stroll.

While planes provide swift transportation, the altitude and cloud cover may obstruct visibility. Trains serve as a viable option, yet they occasionally pass through less scenic urban and industrial landscapes. Opting for a car, however, presents a more intimate and visually gratifying journey, enabling one to appreciate the natural beauty and picturesque vistas en route. This observation might be particularly pertinent to a medical writer discussing the benefits of various modes of travel for patients seeking to enhance their well-being through scenic experiences during recovery or leisure travel.

Handling luggage can become a concern when traveling by air or rail. Often, there are strict limitations on the amount you can bring or additional charges within specific fare classes.

However, when you opt for a car journey, you can conveniently load your luggage into the trunk and back seats, making it easier to bring along everything you need without worrying about baggage restrictions or extra fees.

Choose More Places to Visit

Traveling by car offers unmatched flexibility in choosing more places to visit. Unlike planes or trains, which follow fixed routes and schedules, car travel empowers you to adapt your journey to your needs. It’s the perfect option for exploring hidden gems and taking spontaneous detours.

It extends an invitation to venture into remote, less accessible areas, adding diversity to your exploration. Your car becomes a versatile mobile hub, granting you the freedom to unlock destinations, making it the pragmatic choice for an adventurous and multifaceted travel experience.

Bond with Your Friends and Family

Opting for car travel in today’s fast-paced and evolving world is a practical way to bring your family closer. Exploring together as a close-knit family fosters positive mental well-being, strengthening the bonds of happiness and love among family members or friends.

It offers an opportunity to not only spend quality time but also break the monotony of daily routines. The cherished memories created during shared meals and outings will likely remain the most beautiful impressions in each heart. Furthermore, it allows you to create lasting connections with your loved ones that will be cherished as time goes on.

Listen to Podcasts, Audiobooks, and Music

Before, car journeys could become quite monotonous for drivers, limited to listening to the radio or engaging in conversations with passengers. Long distances often meant tedious hours on the road.

Today, thanks to digital technology, drivers have a wealth of entertainment options at their fingertips. From a vast selection of podcasts, music, and audiobooks to radio shows from around the world, there’s no shortage of engaging content to make the miles fly by. This technology has enhanced the driving experience, turning those long journeys into opportunities for entertainment, learning, and staying informed.

7 Advantages of Traveling by Car

travel by car

It’s a debate that has been going on for decades: should you fly or drive? Some people prefer the convenience of flying while others enjoy the experience of driving themselves. The answer to this question is entirely personal, but there are many different advantages to consider when deciding which model of transportation will work best for you. Let’s explore 7 advantages of traveling by Car.

1. You control the schedule

First of all, you don’t need to worry about time restrictions. You also have the option to take breaks whenever you need them instead of being stuck in a tight schedule set by someone else. It gives you total control over your schedule. You can start your day when you want and be done when you want to. This means that if there is heavy traffic or something gets in the way, it doesn’t interrupt your travel time because you are in charge of making the schedule. You can make pit stops when you want to, and get food at your favorite restaurants.

2. You won’t experience jet lag in a well-maintained car

Another advantage of traveling by car instead of flying is that the ride is much more relaxing. You can take your time and enjoy the scenery as you go. You don’t have to worry about being crammed into a tiny seat, and you won’t have to worry about jet lag either since you won’t be going from one time zone to another. Jet lag is a very common problem that many people experience when they fly, and it can have some serious consequences on your health if you’re fatigued.

Also, it is very important to check that the car is in good condition for a safe ride. Maintaining the car properly is very important to have peaceful trips at times as well as to increase the trade-in value of the car. People during the trade-in process be like, how will they value my car ? Well, there is only one answer; they value according to the performance of the car.

3. Save money without compromising quality

Another advantage of traveling by car is that it’s a lot cheaper than flying. This doesn’t mean that you sacrifice anything though- not only can you still stop at your favorite restaurant for a

bite to eat, but you also have the option of bringing snacks with you in case there isn’t anything good to eat. Just being able to go at a comfortable pace and see everything around you is worth it in itself. If you want to cancel your plan at the last moment then you won’t have to worry about refunds. It is known to everyone that some air travel agencies won’t refund the amount if you cancel the flight. So there is no doubt that by travelling in car you can save money without compromising the quality.

4. It allows for more flexibility in your plans

One of the amazing things about traveling by car is that you have more flexibility in your plans. If you had to give up your plans last minute for some reason, it’s easy to go by car instead of flying. You can stop to enjoy the local tourist spots whenever you see one. You can even pull over to stretch your legs and relax your body. This is something that a lot of people miss out on by flying to their destinations. You can stop off wherever you want and see things along the way, and then simply head into your hotel for some rest when it’s time.

5. There are no airport hassles

Travelling by car allows you to spend more time on the road exploring your destination rather than being stuck in an airport waiting for your flight to take off! There’s no waiting in lines at the airport, and you don’t need to worry about checked luggage or carry-ons. You can take your time getting there without any worries thanks to traveling by car. Airport hassles have always been something that people disliked about flying, and traveling by car is the perfect solution for this problem.

6. It gives you the chance to be spontaneous

Another advantage of traveling by car is that you have the opportunity to be spontaneous. You can take a detour off the main highway to explore something new, or even stop at a beautiful scenic spot for a photo shoot. It gives you the chance to enjoy all of the scenery as you make your way to your destination as well as see as much as possible along the way. A lot of people find this really helps them get in touch with nature and their surroundings. This opportunity is something that is lost when you fly.

traveling by car

7. You’ll save time and stress

Traveling by car also saves a lot of time and stress since you won’t have to worry about checking your bags or going through security at the airport. Waiting for your flight, commuting to the airport, and checking in are all things that take up time, but traveling by car ensures that you get there on time without any delays. Another advantage is that you don’t have to worry about long layovers either. Traveling by car also helps you avoid all the stress involved with air travel including delayed flights, lost luggage, and traffic. You can take your time getting where you need to go without worrying about someone else’s schedule or transportation complications.

Plans and schedules can be a bit overwhelming, but traveling by car gives you the time to do as much or as little as you want on your journey. Traveling by car is an excellent way for those who are short on time and don’t like feeling constrained to make it from where you are to where you want to be without any hassle. With these 7 advantages of traveling by car that are mentioned above, we hope that this article has given you some ideas about how traveling with your own vehicle may work best for you!

The Advantages of Car Travel vs. Plane Travel

By Joe Bracken • June 7, 2022

After a long winter, warm weather and bright skies appear again. Summer is the perfect time to plan a vacation, and while planning your getaway, you need to decide how you want to get to your desired destination.

Airplane rides may be the safest and fastest way to travel, but you miss out on so much. The summertime is the perfect season for road trips. The advantages of traveling by car versus plane go beyond experiencing an excellent road trip.

Flexible Schedule

Your departure date can get hectic, and you might have to accomplish several things before takeoff. After purchasing your plane ticket, you lock yourself in on a specific time and date. You must plan everything according to that time, and if you miss your flight, you’re already behind schedule.

If you drive instead of fly, you give yourself more flexibility in your schedule. You can take your time and ensure you have everything you need before your trip. If you rush through the process, you’re bound to forget something. Driving also gives you the option of staying an extra day. You don’t need to worry about making your return flight.

Pack as Much as You Want

Airplanes have rules about how much you can bring with you. Your bag can’t go over a 50 lbs. limit, or you must pay extra. Your carry-on bag also needs to fit in the overhead compartment; if it doesn’t, you’ll be forced to check the bag.

These rules put a damper on your trip before even taking off. When you drive, you have the luxury to bring as much as you want with you. You might overpack, but it’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared.

Better Food

Airplane food rarely fills up its passengers—the snacks simply tide people over until they reach their destination. But those pretzels and little cookies don’t cut it for a long flight, and sometimes the limited selection flight attendants offer you don’t seem appealing.

You can always buy something at the airport before you board your flight, but the prices of that food might make you reconsider. On a road trip, you can bring all your desired snacks and stop at a diner or a restaurant if you want something more filling.

See More Country

One of the best things about a road trip is all the sights you get to take in. You only see the skies on an airplane if you luck out and get a window seat.

The best part of your vacation begins the minute you start your car. A passenger van rental in Maryland means you get to take the scenic route and admire all the sights. Loading up the car and hitting the open road allows you to see more of the country.

Traveling is always fun and interesting. And if you have your own car, when you decide to go on a trip, there are many more opportunities and prospects. With your own vehicle, you can go without obstacles for the whole family to explore not only the expanses of their country, but also the countries of the near abroad.

Many are afraid to go "free sailing", fearing certain difficulties that will be encountered on the way. Therefore, before you make a choice in the direction of this method of travel, it is worth understanding all its pros and cons.

In order to be sure of the correctness of his decision, it is necessary to know what advantages a person has, going to travel by car before other travelers.

  • First of all, it is a complete freedom. Making a journey in your own car, you choose your own route and places to visit. During such a trip you can always stay in the most favorite place or deviate from the course if necessary. Often there are situations when you learn about something only on the way, and the bus or train does not visit the place or does not stop.
  • Sufficiently low cost for the entire trip, though, provided that the number of people in the car will be equal to the number of seats in the car. After all, for such a number of people to buy train or bus tickets are much more expensive.
  • Mobility and freedom of decision. Travelling by car, you can always look at the store that came to mind on the way, or stop at the drugstore to buy the necessary items. In the train, of course, no such opportunity. Yes, and to provide for everything you need to take with you is difficult enough.
  • You can always take any number of things with you, which will be limited only by the capacity of the car and its carrying capacity. In this case, no need to worry that the luggage exceeds the permissible mass.
  • Always travel by car is much more interesting and fun, because there will not be strangers that will interfere. In your own car is easier to relax and enjoy the scenery outside the window. Not only are you in a better mood among your family, but it's much easier to relax.
  • Relative savings in travel time, as the movement by car is always faster than by train. And it's much more convenient, because there will be more time for entertainment and exploring new places.

advantages travelling by car

Main Disadvantages

  • Traveling by car is not particularly convenient and comfortable type of travel. It is especially difficult to endure a long distance to the driver, who is constantly in tension, as he needs to keep his eyes on the road. He has a huge responsibility for the safety of passengers. And all the passengers will not be so comfortable, because the volume of the cabin of the car is not too large, will have to stay in one position for a long time. Even if there are two drivers in the car, it is difficult to provide proper rest for each of them. Also, when traveling by car will not always have the opportunity to visit the toilet if necessary, they are very rare on the highways.

advantages travelling by car

  • When traveling by car there is always the possibility that it will break down at the most unexpected moment, because it is a very complex mechanism. You can lose a lot of time and effort until you get help, and you can hardly do without strangers. And if you travel alone, it is very difficult to repair it and ask for help. It is good if you have a sufficiently acceptable understanding of the repair of your own car.
  • When traveling by car, there are certain risks and dangers. For example, there is always the possibility of getting into an accident, even through no fault of your own. This is probably the most terrible thing. Secondly, on major roads often enough scammers and robbers are operating, and they often choose as a victim these very travelers. Such people are easy prey for them. And the meeting with the employees of the State Automobile Inspection is not the most desirable.
  • During the overnight stay, you will need to look for the safest place to park your car. It is best to drive it to the parking lot, protected according to all the rules, but if it is located far from your place of residence, it will create a lot of inconvenience during the trip. Do not rely on your own alarm system, because the level of the thieves is very high. And a special parking lot for tourists is almost always very expensive.

Therefore, before you go on a trip in your car, you should weigh all the pros and cons. It is very important to assess the capabilities not only your own, but also your car.

  • Do not go on a trip in your car, if you do not have confidence in it, as well as in their own abilities.
  • It is best to have two drivers in the car, who can give each other a rest on the way.
  • Before the trip should be only a good mood. Therefore it is very important to tune in positively and enjoy what is happening.
  • It is not necessary to start the trip in bad weather.
  • Travelling by car can be a very expensive pleasure, because if there is a breakdown, then all the repair work will have to take entirely on itself.

In the end, traveling by car is always a big responsibility first and foremost on the person who sits behind the wheel. He is responsible for everyone in the car: friends, family, animals, or just fellow travelers. Keep this in mind and try to make the road comfortable and relaxing not only for you, but also for your surroundings.

Advantages of traveling by car

There is no means of transportation without its comparative benefits. Here are some of the pros you will enjoy when you travel by car.

You control your time and pace

Unlike some other means of transportation, you don’t have to work on a fixed schedule when you are traveling by car, especially if you own the car. For instance, you will not be restricted by plane or train schedule, delay, arriving earlier than you want, fixed route, and missing your schedule.

You have a lot of freedom when you travel by car. For example, you will leave your location when it is convenient for you and stop at will to enjoy some side attractions. Moreover, you will travel at your pace, can change routes if necessary, and many others.

Travel with the desired number of people and luggage

When you travel by car, you can go with as many friends or relatives as you want. You do not have luggage restrictions also. However, the number of people and the size of luggage you can travel with relatively depends on the size of the car, trunk capacity, and how comfortable you want to be.

Since there is no restriction on the weight of luggage, you can buy more items as you journey. Moreover, your luggage can remain permanently in the trunk throughout the journey. You don’t have to stress yourself about moving them, waiting for them to be cleared, or someone stealing them.

It is fun and adventurous

There are likely some places that you have not been to or explored. You have the opportunity to see such places and other places you never knew when you travel by car. For instance, you can stop at strategic points for sightseeing, shopping , and fun. You miss most of these places when you travel by air.

Moreover, you will have time for some of the things you have been missing. Driving for several hours will give you time to listen to your favorite podcast or audio. If possible, you should have a plan or create a list of some of the activities for the journey.

Privacy and bonding

You can create a bonding experience if you have someone traveling with you. Road trips can create a heartfelt and memorable discussion. It could be your spouse, children, or friend. You will have the opportunity to talk without the fear that a third party is listening to you.

Moreover, if you control who journeys with you, then you don’t have to worry about sharing the car with a stranger.

Disadvantages of traveling by car

Despite some of the benefits highlighted above, traveling by car also has some downsides. For instance, you might be on the road for several hours. This is because the car is not the fastest means of transportation. The following are some of the disadvantages of traveling by car.

Unanticipated breakdown

In some instances, you will experience what you do not anticipate when you travel by car. Every kilometer you travel is wearing down some of the parts of the car. Moreover, cars have different mechanical components. Any of the parts could fail without prior notice or short notice. For instance, the tires could get punctured. It is recommended that you properly check and fix all issues with your car before you travel with it. You should also prepare for other emergencies.

Life-threatening risks

You are exposed to different risks when you travel by car. For instance, you could be attacked by armed robbers, especially when you travel on lonely roads or parks. Though undesirable, the truth is that the car could be involved in an accident.

Traveling by car could be expensive

You could be spending more than it would cost you to travel by air or train when you travel by car. For instance, you will pay for gas, toll fees, and parking space, and also fix any potential issue with your car . In case of a breakdown, you will pay for the service of a repairman. Moreover, you could be booked for fines by law officers.

More traveling time

Though you control your traveling time and schedule, the truth is that you could spend more hours on the road when you travel with a car. For instance, if you are traveling in big cities, you might spend many hours in traffic. Moreover, you might miss your way. Though GPS and Google maps could help prevent this; have you thought of what would happen when you get to places with poor or no internet network?

Just like other means of transportation, traveling by car has its benefits and disadvantages. If you are traveling by car, you should make adequate preparations.

Which is Better: Traveling by Car or by Airplane?

A significantly greater number of people are traveling by car instead of by airplane for the upcoming holiday season, according to this article written by Greg Keraghosian, who is the associate travel editor of Yahoo! Travel .

“The survey by  Airfarewatchdog  asked more than 3,300 travelers a simple question: Will you be flying for the holidays this year? Thirteen percent answered, ‘Yes, I always fly for the holidays,’ which is a precipitous drop from the 32 percent who said so in 2013.”

There are a number of factors which have caused more people to consider driving a car to their destinations rather than flying as passengers on airplanes, including but not limited to:

  • Crowds and long lines
  • Convenience
  • Security screenings and procedures at airport checkpoints

Even though fuel prices are at the lowest point in the past four years , airfares have not been reduced — significantly, if at all. Instead, airlines continue to add fuel surcharges to certain international airfares — and even increase airfares in some cases — potentially pocketing the difference which decreasing fuel costs can bring…

…so does that mean that you should start driving more? That depends.

If cost is the main issue for you, air travel may not necessarily be more expensive than traveling by car depending on all of the factors involved. This handy interactive dynamic calculator  can help you ascertain whether or not you should travel by airplane or by car, as it takes into account such factors as the…

  • Miles per gallon of the vehicle you intend to use
  • Cost of fuel for the vehicle
  • Maintenance costs for your vehicle
  • Miles to your destination versus to the airport you would use
  • Time to reach your destination
  • Lodging expenses during your road trip
  • Meal expenses during your road trip
  • Airfares and ancillary fees you expect to pay
  • Cost to park your vehicle at the airport
  • Rental car expenses

…and it gives you two visual graphic in the form of pie charts to instantly see what attributes to the percentages of your expenses.

If energy efficiency is more important to you, it may surprise you to know that — unless you drive a car that gets 33.8 gallons per mile or carry more than one passenger in your vehicle —  flying as a passenger in commercial air travel is typically more fuel efficient than driving your car ; but then again, that could depend on how you drive.

If potential harm to the environment is more important to you, you might be interested in reading up on this study released earlier this year as conducted by the Transportation Research Institute of the University of Michigan, which analyzes recent trends in the amount of energy needed to transport a person in the United States a given distance either in a light-duty vehicle or on a scheduled airline flight.

If safety is paramount to you, fly as a passenger on an airplane rather than drive a car. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States, 33,561 traffic fatalities occurred in the United States in 2012 — or approximately 11.3 deaths per one billion vehicle miles traveled. In contrast, the chance of you suffering from a fatality from being a passenger on an airplane is remote at best.

Graffiti: Historic, Art or Vandalism?

In other words, passengers of commercial airlines reportedly die at a rate of 0.07 per billion passenger miles flown,  according to this study  conducted by the Department of Economics and the Transportation Center of Northwestern University.

I asked on July 31 earlier this year if commercial aviation is safe after the following four major incidents:

  • A McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft which operated as Air Algerie flight 5017  crashed in Mali  on Thursday, July 24, 2014 — and none of the 110 passengers and six crew members survived
  • The  crash of an ATR72 aircraft  which operated as TransAsia Airways flight 222 in Taiwan on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in inclement weather caused by a typhoon, carrying 54 passengers and four members of the flight crew — none of whom reportedly survived
  • A Boeing 777-2H6ER aircraft which operated as Malaysia Airlines flight 17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had reportedly been  shot down by a missile  on Thursday, July 17, 2014 in eastern Ukraine near the border with Russia — all of the  298 passengers  and flight crew members aboard the aircraft were reportedly killed — resulting in  airlines adjusting flight routes to avoid the air space above Ukraine  until further notice
  • The  mysterious disappearance of a Boeing 777-200 aircraft which operated as Malaysia Airlines flight 370  — carrying 227 passengers and 12 members of the flight crew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing — early in the morning on Saturday, March 8, 2014 somewhere over the Gulf of Thailand en route

Fears may not allow you to have much control over your decision. If you have aviophobia or acrophobia, a flight is something which you might automatically dismiss more often than not.

Of course, there are other forms of transportation to consider — including travel by rail, bus, and vessel at sea. Many of the aforementioned factors apply to your final decision here as well…

…so now it is your turn. Which is better for you: driving a car or flying as a passenger to your destination — and why?

Share this:

anything under 250 miles and you are better of driving. Between 250 and 400 miles, its a toss up. And above 400 miles, flying is better. Also, a lot depends on how many people are traveling. If it’s more than two, the economic dynamics change quite a bit.

My break point is 10 hours in the car. Anything shorter and I drive; longer, I fly.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traveling by Plane

We take air transport for granted nowadays, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of traveling by plane? In this post, we take a look.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of air transportation

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

Whether you like flying or not, when it comes to the pros and cons of flying, there are plenty of both.

On the one hand, air travel is the quickest way to get from A to B. It’s also an ideal means of transport that is relatively safe and comfortable, thanks to advances in technology.

On the other hand, flying can be expensive, stressful and detrimental to the environment.

There's no denying it is one of the most popular forms of transport for both business and pleasure, and has brought the world closer together in many ways, but nothing is perfect!

In this guide, we'll list 10 advantages that traveling by plane offers, and balance those out with 10 disadvantages. By the end, you should have a good idea of whether or not flying is the right choice for your next trip.

Air Transport Advantages:

Let's kick off in a positive way, and look at airplane advantages and the benefits of making a journey by plane.

– One of the best advantages of airplanes, is that when you need to get somewhere fast, flying is often the best option. It can get you across the country or around the world in a matter of hours. If you have a choice between flying and driving, flying will almost always get you there faster.

For example, as I write a lot about Greece, I'm often asked how to travel from one place to another. Many people who want to get from Athens to Santorini are surprised to find that to fly rather than take a ferry is quicker, and often cheaper!

– With wider seats, more legroom, and in-flight entertainment, flying can be a very comfortable experience. On international flights anyway! When you compare it to other forms of transportation like buses or trains, it’s often much more pleasant.

3. Efficiency

– One of the key advantages of air transport, is that planes are designed to get you from Point A to Point B as quickly and efficiently as possible. They can cover large distances in a relatively short amount of time. Even when you factor in the time it takes to get to and from the airport, flying is often just as quick but usually quicker as other forms of travel including high speed trains.

4. Relaxation

– For some people, flying is a chance to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. When you're up in the air, it's easy to forget about your troubles down on the ground.

You can watch movies , listen to music , or sleep. Falling asleep on a flight is easy for many people, and there's never the concern you might miss your stop as with other modes of transport!

Long distance flights have inflight entertainment to help you relax during the journey

– I think it was Superman who said, “Statistically, it’s safer to fly than to drive.” Flying is one of the safest forms of transportation, making it one of the best advantages of planes. In 2015, there were over 35,000 commercial flights per day in the US, and only 21 accidents .

That means that your odds of being in a plane crash are about 1 in 8 million . With modern technology and safety protocols, the chances of an accident or plane crashes are very low.

Disadvantages of air travel:

Travelers who are making arrangements to travel long distances by plane might also want to keep some of the disadvantages of flights in mind:

– One of the biggest disadvantages of flying is the cost. It can be very expensive to purchase a plane ticket, especially if you're flying internationally. Sure, budget airlines might offer some cheap flights, but they often come with their own set of problems (more on that below).

2. Time Commitment

– Flying can take a lot of time, especially if you're flying to a far-flung destination. You have to factor in travel time to and from the airport, as well as time spent waiting at the airport itself.

– Even for hardened travelers, flying can be a hassle, especially if you're dealing with delays, cancellations, or lost baggage. It can be frustrating to deal with the logistics of air travel, and it's not always a smooth or easy process.

4. Inconvenience

– Flying can be inconvenient, especially if you have to travel on short notice. It can be difficult to find a flight that fits your schedule, and you may have to deal with unforeseen delays or cancellations. You also need to make sure your plane tickets, passport, and other documents are in order. And did we mention the long lines at security?

5. Missed Connections

– One of the biggest headaches of flying is dealing with missed connections. If your flight is delayed or canceled, it can throw off your whole travel schedule. When buying tickets, you should leave plenty of time between connecting flights!

Related: Common Travel Mistakes

– Jet lag is a real problem for many people who fly frequently. It's a disruption of your body's natural sleep cycle, and it can be difficult to adjust to a new time zone. If your air travels involve a long journey, you're likely to experience some jet lag.

Related: How to minimize jet lag

7. Baggage Fees

– Many airlines now charge baggage fees, which can add up quickly if you're traveling with multiple bags. It's important to check the baggage policy before you travel to avoid any surprises, especially if using a budget airline.

8. Security Lines

– One of the biggest hassles of flying is dealing with security lines. They can be time-consuming and frustrating, especially if you're running late for your flight. One tip is to get to the airport early so you have plenty of time to clear security.

9. Crowded Flights

– One of the disadvantages of travelling by plane, is that flying can be cramped and uncomfortable, especially if you're on a crowded flight. It's important to book a seat in advance so you can avoid being stuck in the middle of the plane. What is the best seat on an aisle of a plane?

I prefer to sit near the window so that I can take advantage of the view during takeoff and landing, but some people prefer to sit on the aisle so they have easy access to the lavatories.

10. Environmental Impact

– Finally, it's important to consider the environmental impact of flying. Air travel is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, so if you're looking to reduce your carbon footprint, flying is not the best option. If you want to be a responsible traveler , consider offsetting your emissions by planting trees or investing in renewable energy.

The bottom line is that there are both advantages and disadvantages to flying. It's important to weigh the pros and cons before you decide whether or not to take a flight. And if you do decide to fly, make sure you're prepared for the hassles that come with it!

Advantages and disadvantages of air transportation – Conclusion

Overall, the advantages of flying outweigh the disadvantages. While it can be expensive and inconvenient at times, flying is a very safe and efficient way to travel. It offers access to unique destinations around the world, and it's a great way to network with other professionals. For some people, flying is an adventure in and of itself, and it's a great way to explore new places and have new experiences.

10 Tips For Flying long distances

Now we've seen some of the advantages and disadvantages of air transport, how can you make the most of your journey by air? These tips for traveling by plane will help you get the best out of your flight:

1. Choose your seat wisely –

When booking your flight, be sure to choose a seat that is comfortable for you. If you're traveling with a partner or friend, book seats together so you can chat and pass the time more easily. If you're flying solo, consider an aisle seat so you can get up and stretch your legs when needed.

2. Bring a good book –

Flying can be a great opportunity to catch up on some reading. Be sure to bring a good book (or two!) to keep you entertained during the flight. If you get bored easily, consider bringing a Sudoku puzzle or other brainteaser to keep your mind sharp.

3. Stay hydrated –

It's important to stay hydrated when flying, as the dry air can be dehydrating. Be sure to drink plenty of water (and avoid alcohol) during your flight. If you're traveling with a reusable water bottle, fill it up before you board the plane.

4. Get up and move around –

Sitting in a cramped seat for hours can be uncomfortable, so be sure to get up and move around when possible. Take a walk up and down the aisle, do some stretches in your seat, or take a trip to the lavatory.

5. Wear comfortable clothing –

You'll be more comfortable on your flight if you dress in comfortable clothing. Avoid constricting clothing, such as jeans or tight dresses, and opt for loose-fitting clothes that won't restrict your movement. It's also a good idea to wear layers so you can adjust to the changing temperature on the plane.

6. Bring snacks –

If you get hungry during your flight, be sure to bring along some snacks. It's often more expensive to buy food on the plane, and the selection is usually limited. Pack some snacks that you enjoy and that will tide you over until you can eat a proper meal.

7. Bring a travel pillow –

If you're flying long-distance, consider bringing a travel pillow to help you sleep. A good night's sleep on the plane can make a big difference in how you feel when you land.

8. Keep your valuables close –

Be sure to keep your valuables close to you at all times while on the plane. If possible, keep them in a carry-on bag so you can have easy access to them. If you need to put them in the overhead bin, be sure to keep an eye on them throughout the flight.

9. Plan ahead –

If you're flying long-distance, it's important to plan ahead so you can avoid jet lag. Consider what time zone you'll be landing in and try to adjust your sleep schedule accordingly.

10. Sit comfortably –

If you're going to be sitting on the plane for a long time, it's important to be comfortable. You may want to consider upgrading to a premium seat with more leg room if you have the option.

Amtrak NYC to DC: Why Taking the Train is the Best Way to Go

U nlock the advantages of traveling by train from the bustling Big Apple to the nation’s capital Washington DC with Amtrak. Say goodbye to airport security lines and traffic congestion as you embark on a relaxing journey from New York’s new Moynihan Train Hall.

With frequent departures, a generous baggage policy and the ability to move around during the under four-hour trip, Amtrak offers flexibility and convenience. Sit back and enjoy the ever-changing scenery while enjoying the onboard amenities that make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

Amtrak Advantages: Travel Time

Anyone who has ever tried to drive out of New York City on a summer weekend, holiday or random gridlock alert day knows that the soul-crushing traffic can put a damper on the trip.

A journey from New York City to Washington DC by car can take anywhere from four to seven hours.

There are two Amtrak options:

  • Amtrak Acela  takes 2 hours and 46 (to 54) minutes. It stops at Newark Penn Station; Metropark, NJ; Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Penn Station, and the train can speed along at 150 miles an hour in some spots.
  • Northeast Regional  takes three hours and 20-40 minutes. It makes all of the stops the Acela makes, plus stops at the Newark and Baltimore airports, and it travels at slower speeds.

You can save almost an hour on the high-speed train, and up to four hours of hair-tearing hysteria by taking the train rather than your car.

Plus, the Acela has a First Class option, with free meals and drinks served to you at your seat. Philadelphia celebrity chef Stephen Starr curated the menu. The food in the Acela cafe car also has more interesting options than the cafe car on the Northeast Regional.

Price: Amtrak vs Car

On a recent summer weekend, we paid about $40 for our roundtrip Amtrak tickets, bought well in advance. Had we waited to buy our tickets at the last minute, or planned to travel during the holidays, it would have been far more expensive.

When we realized we could take a morning train, getting us into Washington DC much earlier in the day than our ticketed departure, we learned that we would have to pay the difference in price. The morning train would have cost us more than five times the price we originally paid.

Driving to DC, the tolls can be $40, depending on route. And the gas? Let’s say you have a car that gets 25 miles per gallon. Gas will cost about $30 for the trip.

This is, of course, just one way, so you’ll spend another $70 to get back to NYC from Washington DC. But if 2 of you are in the car, the price per person drops. And three or four along for the ride? Even less.

But you have to weigh your sanity versus potential road rage. You do you.

Comfort in Coach

This is not your average airplace seat! Even in coach class on the slower Northeast Regional trains, there is plenty of legroom. You can put your bags up above, or in luggage areas at the end of cars.

Business class seats have the advantage of being assigned, so you don’t have to worry about dragging your suitcases through the train, looking for an available seat.

There is something weird with Amtrak train seats: If you have an aisle seat and don’t know the person sitting next to you, you have to run a cord across their seat to reach the power outlets.

And the free wifi isn’t really strong enough to do work on the train.

Quiet Car vs Other Seats on Amtrak Train

Now that my children are out of the house, I am a fan of the quiet car on Amtrak. Phone calls aren’t allowed and you have to use headphones if you use electronic devices, with the volume turned low.

But don’t take the quiet car with young children. Although you are allowed to talk in the quiet car, no one appreciates a loud child here. We once took this car because there were no other seats on the train. We were glared at until Philadelphia, when we escaped to the boisterous regular car.

Amtrak Pet and Baggage Policies

If you are bringing a dog, you might have to drive. Amtrak charges $26 for a dog, and it has to weigh under 20 pounds. My Labrador Retriever has plumped up to 70 pounds, so she is banned from the train, even though she works as a comfort dog. [Therapy dogs of any size are allowed].

Driving can also be the perfect option if you are schlepping a lot of stuff. Amtrak allows you to bring two pieces of luggage, and charges for oversized items like bicycles. On the Northeast Corridor, it costs $20 to bring a bicycle.

Though when I brought my daughter a folding bike, I didn’t have to pay extra.

Moynihan Train Hall, New York City

One of the best things about taking Amtrak anywhere from NYC is the new Moynihan Train Hall.

This glorious transformation of the historic Farley Post Office has transformed the former Amtrak area in Penn Station, which is across the street, to one of beauty and wonder.  You also have access to great food.

If you take the subway to Moynihan Train Hall, the walk from the filth of the MTA to the shiny new Amtrak station is like the change from black and white to color in the Wizard of Oz . Light streams in from above, brass gleams and the air is – or at least seems – fresher.

Moynihan Food Hall

The centerpiece of Moynihan Food Hall, the Bar at Moynihan, has lots of local craft beer on tap and classic cocktails. Sit at the wood bar while you wait for an evening train.

The food hall has easy to eat or carry out food, like sushi, chopped salad, pizza and burgers. Alidoro makes Italian sandwiches that travel well and Naya has Mediterranean inspired bowls, wraps and salads. A ramen shop is coming, but ramen is best slurped up before the train.

If you are visiting someone – say, your daughter – in Washington DC, and you’ve forgotten to bring her bagels, you can pick some up at H & H, along with a few cupcakes at Magnolia or chocolates at Maison du Chocolat.

Exclusive Access: Metropolitan Lounge

If you have treated yourself to an Acela train ticket, or you have elite Amtrak status, you get access to Metropolitan Lounge. Business class passengers can also buy a day pass to the lounge.

This expansive sanctuary has lots of clean, comfortable places to sit, and free (non-alcoholic) drinks and food. There is also a bar, but you have to pay for drinks.

Even if you don’t have access to the Metropolitan Lounge, The Amtrak waiting area at Moynihan, for ticketed passengers only, has very clean bathrooms and power outlets at every seat.

Getting to Your Amtrak Train

One issue the fabulous Moynihan Train Hall hasn’t addressed is the chaos that ensues when a train track is announced. There is only one escalator to the track and it’s a bloodsport to get on the line before it resembles a Black Friday queue.

But there are 2 semi-secret ways to avoid the line.

  • When the train is announced, go to the elevator and take it to the track. Very few people do this.
  • Passengers in the Metropolitan Lounge get an early announcement of the track number and can take the elevator before the line even forms.

Union Station Washington DC

When you walk into Union Station in Washington DC, you are in a beautiful historic train station. Unfortunately, the Amtrak area, while not as grim as Penn Station in Manhattan was, is still pretty dismal.

There is an Acela Lounge at Union Station. For ‘regular’ passengers, there is a dim seating area and the usual scrum when the track is announced. One advantage here over Moynihan Train Hall is that the trains are on the same level as the waiting area. No crowded escalators, stairs or elevators to navigate.

Picking a Train

Some trains originate in NYC, which means finding a seat on the train going to DC is pretty easy. It also means that the train is cleaner. If the Amtrak is coming from Boston, people might be getting off in NYC. But they are not taking their garbage with them and no one is cleaning the train.

On our recent Amtrak ride, someone did come around collecting trash, but the guy next to me left a mess in his seat and no one addressed that.

And don’t even get me started on the bathrooms. I can’t imagine what the bathrooms look like on the trains going all the way to Miami or Chicago.

Before Going to DC, Ask Yourself…

A lot of considerations go into a trip from New York City to Washington DC.

Q: Do you want to see the cherry blossoms ?

A: Go mid-March to mid-April

Q: Do you want to take long walks around the National Mall?

A: Go late September to November or March to May

Q: Do you want to avoid tourists?

A: Don’t go to Washington DC

What to Do in Washington DC

Tour the us capitol.

The  US Capitol visitors center has an interactive gallery. There are also tours of the Capitol building, including the Crypt, the Rotunda and National Statuary Hall. Tours and exhibits are all free.

The rest of the National Mall includes the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument,  the White House and Smithsonian museums. Again, everything is free.

Stop and See the Flowers

See the green side of Washington DC at Tregaron Conservancy. It has walking trails, gardens, fields, meadows and a lily pond. The conservancy, between the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park, is free. You can also see the free  National Zoo, near the conservancy
