So, you’ve been to Jaipur , Jodhpur , and Udaipur and now you’re looking for something more off the beaten track in Rajasthan?
Well, here are some amazing places to visit in Alwar! A hidden gem and easily accessible from Delhi.
Tucked away in the Rajasthani countryside, Alwar gives you a perfect break from the loud noise of the city.
My friend and I did have our doubts before visiting here. It wasn’t exactly recommended in the India guidebooks.
But, in the end, we were pleasantly surprised by what we found and had a hilarious 3-day getaway.
At only three hours away by train from Delhi, it is the perfect little stop for a short weekend break or can provide a gateway to start your Rajasthan adventure!
You can visit forts, palaces, lakes and even go on a tiger safari from here. So, what are you waiting for?
How to get from Delhi to Alwar?
Alwar is a large district in the Indian state of Rajasthan and so you’ll need to be familiar with where you’re going when planning to stay here.
Luckily, Alwar Junction train station provides a central location to arrive in.
By far the cheapest and quickest option to get from Delhi to Alwar is to catch a train from Delhi or the neighbouring city of Gurgaon. It is only around 3 hours away so is a nice and short picturesque journey.
From here, you can catch a taxi or Auto-Rickshaw to your chosen hotel. I would recommend the Ajmer Shatabdi express train (leaves Delhi train station at 6 am) as Alwar is the second stop.
The picture below isn’t from the Shatabdi train. It was the 2AC sleeper that leaves from Delhi in the afternoon.
There’s something I love about being able to stretch out on a train and watch the world pass me by!
A great website for booking Indian train tickets is cleartrip.com . They provide easy functionality and, unlike the IRCTC (Indian Railway Central booking system), they allow you to book train tickets on the same day!
They do charge a small premium, but if anything saves me from wanting to rip my hair out when booking an Indian rail ticket – I’ll happily pay it. From here, you can easily head on to Jaipur , Ajmer, or back to Delhi.

Where to stay in Alwar? The best Alwar hotels
Alwar itself doesn’t have many great hotels.
In fact, we originally booked a ‘resort’ here but changed our minds on arrival due to the rat infestation (ew).
Luckily for us and you, there is a beautiful hill fort we discovered in the nearby village of Kesroli that you will fall in love with!
The Hill Fort Kesroli is officially a ‘non-hotel’ owned by the Neemrana Hotel Group . They specialise in restoring ancient historical properties and transforming them into beautiful heritage sites to spend the night.
There are 23 across India and I would highly recommend you check in to one on your travels.
The first thing I adored about the fort was the fantastic views of the Rajasthan countryside. No traffic, No noise, no pollution. It was bliss. If you didn’t fancy venturing out of the hotel, there’s plenty to keep you occupied here for a staycation.
There’s a pool, spa offering treatments, outdoor games, walking routes, and a library.
Restaurants are mainly a buffet affair with a wide range of Indian and western choices. Each night there are cultural shows to entertain you while you dine.

Places to visit in Alwar
1. drive to sariska.
I’m not a staycation kind of girl. In fact, I struggle to stay in one place for too long.
So, when we were looking at activities in the surrounding area, there was one that piqued my interest with the hope of ticking another item off my bucket list.
A tiger safari at the Sariska Tiger Reserve.
Now, don’t get too excited now. When I was googling Lonely Planet to find out more about it, it pretty much told me that my chances of seeing a tiger here were next to none. In fact, my chances of seeing a unicorn were more likely than a tiger in Sariska.
It’s a massive reserve at 866km squared and a tiger population of just 13. But, never one to give up on a challenge, we decided to give it a go.
We got a cab from the fort and made the 40-minute journey to the reserve.
We did make a fatal error and arrived at the tiger reserve around midday. Unfortunately, the safari only takes place twice a day. Once in the morning at around 6 am and then again around 3 pm in the afternoon.
Although we didn’t have much success, make sure you check the Sariska Safari website for timings.
2. Sariska Palace
Hopefully, after reading this, you won’t make the same mistake.
But, if you do find yourself in Sariska with nowhere to go before your safari I would highly recommend a visit to the Sariska Palace opposite.
Although its ‘Fusion’ restaurant is something which looks like it belongs in the ’70s, it has air conditioning and a beer! Sweet salvation.
They say you need to pay some money to go in, but if you’re going to dine in the restaurant they don’t charge you.
3. Take a Sariska Tiger Reserve Safari
There were two choices of vehicle for the safari, the gypsy or the canter.
We were first in line for the safari tickets, which was great as we had heard they were limited.
I could tell that the ticket sellers were thrilled with their jobs as they got ready to sell to the crowd forming. I, myself, didn’t help by pushing my face into the window but it was hot and I just wanted a ticket after that long wait.
The gypsy is an open-air 4×4 and can take up to 6 people at a time. This is the more expensive option at around 600 rupees per person.
You initially pay this to the ticket counter, then you pay some fees directly to the guide after the tour. The total comes to around 1200 rupees.
The Canter is a cheaper option and a massive open-air vehicle which is higher and takes around 20ish people at a time.
Personally, for your best chances of spotting a tiger get the Gypsy. It may be more expensive, but the Gypsy can weave in and out of the jungle and reach the off-the-beaten-track places the tiger may be hiding in.
This is the Gypsy below (yes, I did get the cheesy hat!).
What to expect on your Sariska Safari
We zipped off around the reserve with the other tourists, in the hope of finding one.
Each jeep will go in different directions to spread out. We had seen peacocks, wild boars, a panther hole (but no panther), and deer but no tiger.
Time was running out, it was nearing sunset at 6 pm when we were due to head back to the ticket desk. Our driver told us to keep silent so he could listen out for tiger noises.
My friend and I looked at each other trying not to laugh, surely he was just putting this on for effect? But then, the birds started making a warning call. The next minute, we heard a tiger roar!
Our driver didn’t waste any time, he slammed his foot on the pedal and we zoomed off in the hope of seeing it.
It was one of the scariest yet thrilling rides I had experienced in my life. I was holding onto the frame of the gipsy so tight. The driver certainly had skill!
It created some serious adrenalin as we quickened the chase. Then, behind the bushes in the jungle we finally saw what we were looking for; a beautiful orange and black striped Bengal tigress!
Although we got lucky, I would definitely recommend a visit here even if you don’t see a tiger. The jungle is beautiful to explore.

4. Siliserh Lake
One of the most beautiful places to visit in Alwar is the natural beauty of Siliserh Lake.
It provides stunning views of turquoise blue water, the hills, and beyond.
The best place to take in the panorama view is from the Lake Palace Hotel.
Situated right at the edge of the water, there is a bar and open-top restaurant to dine in while taking in the views.
While we were here, we saw people speed boating! So, if you fancy it – you can get involved.
5. Alwar City Palace and Fort
Centrally located, the Alwar City Palace is a great spot for some Rajasthani history.
It is in desperate need of repair but it is worth a visit if you have time. It’s completely free of charge.
You can start at the massive entrance courtyard and then make your way up to the roof for some great aerial views of Alwar.
There is a museum inside the palace but it charges extra. It really isn’t worth the money, so I would save your rupees.
6. Alwar Palace Lake
My favourite part of the palace was actually situated outside the grounds. It was the water tank and it has to be the most picturesque part of Alwar.
In fact, this was the scene that drew me to it online in the first place.
It was nice just to take a stroll around here. But it was a little awkward getting constantly stared at by the locals.
I really don’t think they get many western tourists visiting, so it was a selfie request at every turn!
Save these places to visit in Alwar for later!
That’s Alwar in a nutshell.
There’s not an extensive amount to do and it’s not built up for western tourism like the bigger cities nearby.
However, it does provide an off-the-beaten-track experience of the Rajasthani villages and countryside.
Make sure you put Alwar down for your next weekend break!

I was born in Alwar and is currently in USA. It is so great to hear about a westener travel experience of Alwar. I think Alwar has a lot of offer but sadly the sites are not that well maintained compared to places like Udaipur and Jaisalmer. I also agree with lack of quality accommodation places. Do you think having backpacking hostels in Alwar will help with the tourism?

Hi Kunal! That's so cool you're from Alwar. Yeah, it was quite different for a Westerner in comparison to the other big cities of Rajasthan but it does have SO much potential if there was more infrastructure like hostels/hotels and restaurants. Also, if the government did a little more to protect the monuments, it would be a great city and put it right on the map. The palace and temples are wonderful! As it's so close to Delhi as well, it's the perfect getaway. Hope you're keeping well in the States and thanks for reading. Sophie x

By KEN RITTER (Associated Press)
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A $12 billion passenger bullet train linking Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area was dubbed the first true high-speed rail line in the nation on Monday, with the private company building it predicting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028.
“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg before taking a stage with union representatives and company officials at the future site of a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip. “It’s really happening this time.”
Buttigieg cited Biden administration support for the project that he said will bring thousands of union jobs, boost local economies and cut traffic and air pollution.
Brightline West, whose sister company already operates a fast train between Miami and Orlando in Florida, aims to lay 218 miles (351 kilometers) of new track almost all in the median of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California. It would link there with a commuter rail connection to downtown Los Angeles. A station also is planned in San Bernardino County’s Victorville area.
Company officials say the goal is to have trains exceeding speeds of 186 mph (300 kph) — comparable to Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains — operating in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
“I believe we’ll look back at today and say, ’This was the birth of an industry of high-speed rail,’” Brightline Holdings founder Wes Edens said Monday.
The company aims to link U.S. cities that are too near each other for air travel to make sense and too far for people to drive.
Brightline received Biden administration backing including a $3 billion grant from federal infrastructure funds and recent approval to sell another $2.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. The company won federal authorization in 2020 to sell $1 billion in similar bonds.
Brightline West says electric-powered trains will cut the four-hour trip across the Mojave Desert to a little more than two hours. It projects 11 million one-way passengers per year, with fares that Edens said will be comparable to airline ticket costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage.
Officials hope the train line will relieve congestion on I-15, where drivers often sit in miles of crawling traffic while returning home to Southern California from a Las Vegas weekend. An average of more than 44,000 automobiles per day crossed the California-Nevada state line on I-15 in 2023, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data.
Florida-based Brightline Holdings’ Miami-line debuted in 2018 and expanded service to Orlando International Airport last September with trains reaching speeds up to 125 mph (200 kph). It offers 16 round-trips per day with one-way tickets for the 235-mile (378-kilometer) distance costing about $80.
Other fast trains in the U.S. include Amtrak’s Acela, which can top 150 mph (241 kph) between Boston and Washington, D.C. But fast train connections for other U.S. cities have been floated, including Dallas to Houston ; Atlanta to Charlotte, North Carolina ; Chicago to St. Louis ; and Seattle to Portland, Oregon. Most have faced delays.
In California, a proposed 500-mile (805-kilometer) rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco was approved by voters in 2008, but has been beset by rising costs and routing disputes . A 2022 business plan by the California High-Speed Rail Authority projected the cost had more than tripled to $105 billion.

A New Home for Sundance? Festival Organizers Say It’s Possible.
A 13-year contract with Park City, Utah, is set to expire in 2026 and the film festival is beginning a review process to see if it should move.
By Nicole Sperling
For the past 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival, the influential annual gathering focused on independent film, has been indelibly linked with the snowy mountain town of Park City, Utah.
That may change.
The Sundance Institute, the nonprofit organization that runs the festival, announced Wednesday that with its 13-year contract with the city set to expire in 2026, it would begin a review process to determine whether it should move.
It will now start seeking information from other U.S. cities interested in hosting the festival, which traditionally takes place in January. Beginning in May, the institute will request proposals from cities selected to move forward. The institute expects to announce its decision around the end of the year or the beginning of 2025.
The festival will remain in Park City for 2025 and 2026. Park City, an hour outside Salt Lake City, often becomes snarled with traffic during the 10-day festival. Rental prices explode during the event, and the snowy climate often complicates the process of attending the screenings for many patrons.
“This exploration allows us to responsibly consider how we best continue sustainably serving our community while maintaining the essence of the Festival experience,” Eugene Hernandez, director of the Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming, said in a statement. “We are looking forward to conversations that center supporting artists and serving audiences as part of our mission and work at Sundance Institute, and are motivated by our commitment to insure that the festival continues to thrive culturally, operationally and financially as it has for four decades.”
Sundance, which Robert Redford founded in 1981 and moved to Park City in 1985, continues to be the dominant festival for independent film. For the 2024 edition, the festival received a record number of submissions, over 17,000 from 153 countries. Mr. Redford remains on the institute’s board, which will be part of the review process. His daughter Amy is on the task force that will review proposals.
Park City officials said the city planned to issue a proposal to keep the festival.
“We appreciate our partnership with Sundance, and we want the festival to remain here for another 40 years,” Nann Worel, Park City’s mayor, said in a statement.

Supreme Court conservatives skeptical of challenge to Oregon city's crackdown on homeless
WASHINGTON — Conservative Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Monday about a challenge to municipal ordinances that punish homeless people for camping on public property when they have nowhere else to go.
The court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is reviewing an appeals court ruling that said several ordinances enacted by the small city of Grants Pass, Oregon, are prohibited under the Constitution’s Eighth Amendment, which bars cruel and unusual punishment.
The ordinances bar sleeping or camping on publicly owned property, including sidewalks, streets, bridges and city parks. Punishment, which is the key issue in the case, can include fines of up to several hundred dollars and exclusion orders barring people from public property.
Exacerbated by lack of housing and the high cost of rent, homelessness and how to deal with it have become flashpoints in many communities across the country.
Justices repeatedly conceded that addressing homelessness is a complicated policy question, but the conservative members of the court expressed doubts that a lawsuit under the Eighth Amendment was the best way to deal with it.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, one of the conservatives, said that before they reach a constitutional issue, the justices "usually think about whether state law, local law already achieves those purposes so that the federal courts aren't micromanaging homeless policy."
He and others raised the prospect of homeless people being able instead to mount a defense under state law known as the "necessity defense," in which people can claim they had no choice but to violate the law.
Fellow conservative Neil Gorsuch raised similar questions, noting that if courts find cities cannot punish homeless people for sleeping outside, the same logic could apply to other ordinances, such as those prohibiting urinating or defecating in public.
"How about if there are no public bathroom facilities? Do people have an Eighth Amendment right to defecate and urinate?" he asked.
Chief Justice John Roberts appeared equally resistant to the idea that courts have a role to play in overseeing homeless policy.
"Why would you think that these nine people are the best people to judge and weigh those policy judgments?" he asked.
Advocates for the homeless argue that the ordinances in effect punish people for existing when they have no other place to go and that the measures do nothing to address the underlying issue of housing shortages.
They note that cities already have the power to regulate encampments, something that is not at issue before the Supreme Court.
The court's three liberal justices appeared more sympathetic to the plaintiffs.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor addressed the prospect of other cities' enacting similar policies that encourage homeless people to seek shelter elsewhere.
"Where do we put them if every city, every village, every town lacks compassion?" she asked. "Where are they supposed to sleep?"
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, in wondering whether a homeless person could ever bring a claim under the Eighth Amendment if the court overturned the appeals court ruling, asked what would happen if "the city decided it was going to execute homeless people."
It would be a "very extreme scenario," but it would "solve the problems you're talking about," she told the city's lawyer, Theane Evangelis.
Justice Elena Kagan also probed the city's arguments, saying that if people can be punished for sleeping then perhaps, under the same theory, cities could also punish people for breathing, because both actions are a "biological necessity."
"For a homeless person who has no place to go, sleeping in public is kind of like breathing in public," she added.
The ruling issued in 2022 by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals applies to all nine states within its jurisdiction, including California. Several of those states have large populations of homeless people.
Among those asking the Supreme Court to overturn the appeals court are local officials in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and other cities.
The Biden administration has mostly backed the challengers, having filed a brief in support of neither side saying laws that bar sleeping on public property are unlawful "if they are applied in a manner that prevents an individual without available shelter from residing in the jurisdiction."
The appeals court ruled 2-1 that Grants Pass, which is about 250 miles south of Portland, cannot “enforce its anti-camping ordinances against homeless persons for the mere act of sleeping outside with rudimentary protection from the elements, or for sleeping in their car at night, when there is no other place in the city for them to go.”
The decision applies only in situations in which homeless people “are engaging in conduct necessary to protect themselves from the elements when there is no shelter space available,” the court added.
The case arose after a group of homeless people challenged the application of the ordinances. They say there is no shelter space , so they have little option but to sleep outside.
City officials maintain that the ordinances pass legal muster and are aimed at curbing the proliferation of homeless encampments.
Officials argue that their policies are aimed at encouraging homeless people to seek housing, although the city itself does not have its own shelter. It directs people to one run by a religious organization that has limited space and imposes various conditions.
"Fines and short jail terms for camping on public property are not cruel and unusual punishments," the city's lawyers wrote in court papers.
