Travel insurance can be one of the most confusing parts of booking a trip. Since many credit cards already include travel insurance, the question of whether to buy airline insurance can make sense.

Why would you pay twice for the same benefits? But, that’s the thing: Not every type of credit card covers the same travel insurance perks.

You’ll want to check if the card you use to book a flight covers a cancellation , lost baggage or an abrupt change to your travel plans — perhaps due to a medical emergency. Being prepared can save you a lot of money in the long run.

This is especially true if you cannot take a trip, which would mean forfeiting the money you spent on nonrefundable flights and hotels.

If you want maximum protection, consider your credit card insurance with an airline’s policy like from American Airlines travel insurance.

Understanding the American Airlines insurance policies can protect you on your next trip with the carrier.

American Airlines trip insurance plans

american airlines aadvantage card travel insurance

American has plans for international and domestic trips you book with the carrier, and the services are administered by Allianz Global Assistance . You’ll see the offer when completing a flight reservation on the website.

When you qualify, the policy can refund part of an itinerary or the entire purchase based on any travel costs or emergency medical expenses in case of a disruption or delay. The promotional offer you receive when booking a ticket is based on the cost of your flight. It is valid for that trip only, unlike annual or multi-trip plans that you would buy from Allianz directly.

Often, you won’t see the trip insurance policy on your American reservation, as it's sold by a third party. But keep a record of the policy information.

What does American Airlines travel insurance cover?

When you buy American Airlines travel insurance, you will be eligible for coverage for various travel issues like delayed or lost bags, medical expenses during the trip or if you have to cancel the trip altogether.

Some features of travel insurance can vary depending on where you live, so be sure to read the fine print.

This is what the flight insurance from American Airlines covers:

Trip cancellation and trip interruption costs. If you paid for any nonrefundable expenses and have to cancel or change your trip due to reasons like illness or injury, you’ll receive a refund for those costs. This can be especially valuable for bucket-list trips like cruise or safari vacations where you spend a lot of money. Each U.S. state sets a limit for the refund amount, so be sure to review those details.

Emergency medical transportation. If you need to be airlifted or driven a long distance to the nearest appropriate hospital or urgent care center, this would be covered by insurance. This can be pretty expensive in some remote locations, and insurance can cover the cost of a helicopter airlift if needed. The American travel insurance benefit for emergency medical transportation is as much as $50,000.

Emergency medical and dental protection. While at the hospital or urgent care facility, you may need immediate care. American Airlines trip insurance would cover up to $10,000 in medical and dental expenses for an eligible occurrence.

Travel delay. This is a valuable benefit, one covered by many credit cards. If you encounter a trip delay of at least six consecutive hours, this insurance will provide meal and accommodation reimbursements. The maximum coverage limits vary by U.S. state. Airlines have their own policies in these situations, and if traveling from the European Union or on an E.U.-based carrier to Europe, you may also be covered for additional compensation.

Lost or damaged baggage. If your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen, American Airlines travel insurance reimburses you up to $500 for your personal items.

Baggage delay. This protection covers the contents of your bag if your baggage was delayed for more than 24 hours. You’ll want to keep eligible receipts of your purchase to submit a reimbursement claim, typically up to $100 per person.

24-hour assistance. This policy would provide you with direct access to someone who can assist you with any travel-related emergencies.

Rental car collision and damage. You would be eligible for primary coverage without a deductible.

What isn't covered by American Airlines travel insurance?

Remember that airlines like American receive a percentage of the sale of travel insurance, so they are eager to promote it. But not all circumstances are covered. This means it is important to review the exclusions.

These are some of the situations that wouldn't be eligible for reimbursement or assistance.

Losses due to government restrictions, travel advisories or warnings (For example: If the U.S. government issues a warning not to travel somewhere).

Losses due to known, foreseeable and expected events (like a hurricane where advance warnings are available).

Epidemics, natural disasters, pollution leading to flight disruption and war.

Preexisting medical conditions.

Pregnancy, fertility treatment and childbirth.

Health issues related to alcohol or drug use.

Injury during professional or amateur sports training.

American Airlines international travel insurance cost

The cost will vary depending on where you are going, often based on the total nonrefundable trip cost and the state where you reside.

To get a more detailed idea of an American Airlines travel insurance plan, an online form calculates your trip details to give an approximate cost. After purchasing it, you have 15 days to change your mind and request a refund as long as your trip hasn't started or you haven't filed a claim.

This travel protection plan offers insurance for just one trip itinerary unless you buy an annual plan. A single trip insurance plan otherwise does not cover additional trips or mishaps that happen before or after your flight journey. It comes with protections for lost bags or emergency medical assistance, which can be helpful — especially if you don’t use a credit card to pay for the trip that has its own insurance protections. Other benefits can include trip interruption or cancellation, emergency dental care, rental car insurance and baggage delay.

You can pay for this when you purchase a flight on American’s website or any time after you buy a ticket on the Allianz website.

American travel insurance plans come underwritten by Jefferson Insurance Company or BCS Insurance Company. They use AGA Service Company as the licensed producer. These plans are recommended and sold by Allianz Global Assistance, not American Airlines.

Yes, if canceled within 15 days of purchase and your trip has not begun. If you have filed a claim, then you would not be able to cancel.

You can pay for this when you purchase a flight on American’s website or

on the Allianz website.

Is American Airlines travel insurance worth it?

This will come down to your own personal risk tolerance, but with so many exclusions on the list, it may not be. That’s because you are already protected by your credit card in many instances.

If you use a card like The Platinum Card® from American Express or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to pay for your trip, you may end up paying again on certain benefits when buying flight insurance from American.

Be sure to compare the benefits, as the amount of lost baggage or emergency medical coverage can be different for each credit card or airline.

Buying a nonrefundable flight ticket may be one of the top reasons to consider this flight insurance, but make sure that the exclusions don’t apply to you. Also, you will want to consider your finances if you are required to cover the cost of lost bags or flights.

If not, the small added cost of insurance could be decent protection in the long run if something were to go wrong during the journey.

World Elite Mastercard partners

World Elite Mastercard benefits are many but often overlooked. Here’s a summary of the extra benefits you can expect from the World Elite Mastercard program:

  • Benefits with partners such as Lyft , DoorDash , and ShopRunner
  • Complimentary room upgrades, breakfast, and other amenities at over 2,000 luxury hotels
  • Hotel lowest rate guarantee
  • 24/7 travel assistance
  • Car rental savings and elite status
  • Savings on vacations, private jets, hotels, cruises, and more

The last perk is a unique benefit available only to qualified Citigold banking clients, and it entitles you to a $145 statement credit each cardmember year as long as you remain a cardmember and are billed the $595 annual fee.

The biggest benefit of having the AAdvantage Executive World Elite card is receiving complimentary lounge access to the Admirals Club and affiliated lounges. An annual household membership to the Admirals Club alone can cost as much as $1,650.

Because complimentary lounge access allows 2 guests or immediate family to enter with the cardholder, this access benefit can be effectively the same as having a household membership, especially since you can add a family member as an authorized user and your entire traveling party, related or not, can have access ($175 each per year).

If lounge access isn’t important to you, but you still frequent American Airlines, the Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Platinum Select ® World Elite™ Mastercard ® with its annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months , might be a good alternative selection for an AAdvantage-branded credit card.

Or if you fly a lot of different airlines, find value in earning rewards, and enjoy receiving additional travel benefits, a general travel rewards credit card could be a viable consideration.

The information regarding the Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Platinum Select ® World Elite™ Mastercard ® was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the citi aadvantage executive world elite card worth it.

If you are currently paying for an annual Admirals Club membership, you could potentially save hundreds of dollars just by having the AAdvantage Executive World Elite card.

An individual Admirals Club membership alone can cost more than $650 and the card charges an annual fee of just $595 .

If lounge access is not important to you, you may be better off with another AAdvantage branded card with a lower annual fee or a general travel rewards credit card.

How does Admirals Club lounge access work?

The AAdvantage Executive World Elite card comes with complimentary access to Admirals Club and network lounges worldwide for the cardholder and 2 guests or their immediate family.

For example, if the cardholder is traveling with their spouse and 2 teenage children, which is a total of 3 guests, they would all be allowed to enter because they are all immediate family.

Authorized users on the card also receive complimentary Admirals Club lounge access and can bring in 2 additional guests or their immediate family. It costs $175 to add an authorized user to your card.

Do authorized users receive a free checked bag?

No, authorized users on the card do not receive flight benefits such as a free checked bag or priority boarding.

Can I transfer American Airline AAdvantage miles to other airlines?

No, you cannot transfer AAdvantage miles to other airlines, but you can use your miles to book award flights with a large network of partner airlines.

You can also redeem miles for an Admirals Club membership, car rentals, vacations, hotels, gift cards, magazines, or donate your miles to charity.

Will my miles expire if I cancel the card?

Miles will not expire if you cancel your AAdvantage credit card as long as the miles you have earned have been transferred to your AAdvantage frequent flyer account.

Each statement period when miles are earned, they are transferred into your AAdvantage frequent flyer account when the monthly statement closes. If you are going to cancel your card, be sure all of the miles you’ve earned have been transferred into your AAdvantage account first before canceling your card.

Any miles not transferred into your AAdvantage account could be lost.

Once miles have been deposited into your AAdvantage account (from your credit card), they are subject to the AAdvantage program rules which state that miles do not expire as long as there is current activity.

If your account goes 24 months without activity, your miles will expire.

Current activity is defined as earning or redeeming miles. Once you have a qualifying activity, the 24-month period starts over and your miles are safe for another 24 months.

Citi is a TPG advertising partner

For American Airlines flyers, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is one of the best card options out there . It provides benefits that can make traveling with American Airlines better -- even if you're flying in basic economy . It's also a useful credit card for travelers that don't fly on American much, since it has lots of valuable airline partners you can redeem miles with . There are plenty of reasons to add this card to your wallet, including the card's current sign-up bonus of 50,000 American AAdvantage miles after spending $2,500 in the first 3 months of account opening. The information for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Aside from the sign-up bonus and benefits directly related to flying on American Airlines, the card features some perks that aren't as widely advertised. (Photo by @alesha_macarosha via Twenty20)

If you make a purchase with your Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard, it's covered against damage and theft within 90 days of purchase or delivery, whichever comes first. Citi will repair the item or reimburse the cost. The card covers up to $10,000 per incident and up to $50,000 per year, per card account.

You must have purchased the item at least in part with your AAdvantage Platinum Select Card in order for it to be eligible for the card's coverage. If you didn't pay for the item completely with your Citi Card, the card's protection will only cover up to the cost that was charged to the card.

This coverage is secondary, meaning if you have other coverage, you'll need to file a claim with your insurance first. Coverage doesn't apply if the item wasn't reasonably cared for to prevent the damage or theft; the item is used in a way that goes against the manufacturer's instructions or warnings, or is altered from its designed purpose; the item is damaged because of a product defect or experiences normal wear and tear where no failure has occurred; the item is damaged because of an act of God; or the item was under the care and control of a third-party.

Purchases that aren't eligible for this coverage include but are not limited to boats, cars, aircraft or any other motorized land, air or water vehicles and their original equipment; products that can spoil or be consumed; currency, cash, gift cards or traveler's checks; tickets of any kind; items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use; advice or services for a purchased item; watches or jewelry; and fire arms or ammunition.

To file a claim, call 1-866-918-4670 or visit www.cardbenefits.citi.com as soon as possible after the incident. You'll need to return all requested documents within 180 days of the date of the incident. You may be asked to provide the damaged item for inspection. For stolen items, you'll need to provide a police report.

2. ShopRunner

american airlines aadvantage card travel insurance

If you shop anywhere outside of Amazon , you know how tough it can be to find free two-day shipping. Unless you're spending at least $50, you'll most likely be on the hook for shipping fees. With ShopRunner membership courtesy of your Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard, you'll receive free two-day shipping and returns at over 100 retailers.

Normally, ShopRunner membership will set you back $79 per year. Membership is free for those with an American Express credit card , PayPal or Yahoo account. Or you login to your Citi account, head to the card benefits section and claim your free ShopRunner account.

5. Extended Warranty

The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard's warranty coverage will extend the manufacturer's warranty on an item for an additional 24 months. If an eligible item breaks, Citi will repair, replace or reimburse you up to the amount charged on your card. The maximum coverage per item is $10,000.

Keep in mind that total coverage won't exceed seven years from the purchase date. Also note that Citi will only extend the warranty on an item paid at least in part with your Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. If you only pay for part of the item with your card, Citi will only reimburse you for up to the amount charged.

Coverage doesn't apply to some items, including boats, cars, aircraft or any other motorized land, air or water vehicles and their original equipment; tires; services unless covered under the manufacturer's warranty; used, antique or pre-owned items; items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use; land or buildings; housing properties; plants and live animals; and items that don't come with a manufacturer's warranty.

Additionally, damage that occurs under some circumstances isn't covered. These circumstances include but aren't limited to when you fail to care for or service the item appropriately as required by the manufacturer; the item has a product defect, recall or experiences normal wear and tear where no failure has occurred; or the item is damaged because of an act of God, such as a flood, hurricane, lightning, wind or earthquake.

To file a claim, call 1-866-918-4670 as soon as possible after the incident and return all requested documents within 180 days of the incident.

Bottom Line

As shown in this article, the benefits of the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard aren't limited to travel on American Airlines. Indeed, the card continues to offer valuable purchase and shopping benefits, despite the recent cut-back. The ShopRunner benefit alone can take a substantial chunk out of the card's $99 annual fee.

Best American Airlines credit cards of 2024

I t's easy to spot an American Airlines jet on the tarmac thanks to the distinctive red, white, and blue coloring—what can be a little harder is selecting the best American Airlines credit card for your travel needs, due to the variety of options on the market. Citi and Barclays both issue co-branded American cards, and Wells Fargo issues a flexible travel card that earns points you can transfer to the airline’s AAdvantage loyalty program.

We’ll help you choose the best American Airlines card based on factors such as whether you’re willing to pay an annual fee, whether you need Admirals Club airport lounge access, and whether you need the flexibility to use your rewards with other airlines.

Best American Airlines Credit Cards

  • Best for frequent American Airlines flyers: Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® | Learn more
  • Best for no annual fee: American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Mastercard® | Learn more
  • Best for luxury perks: Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® | Learn more
  • Best for renters: Bilt Mastercard | Learn more

Best for casual American Airlines flyers: Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®

With a reasonable annual fee and valuable perks such as a free checked bag, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is a strong choice for frequent American Airlines travelers.

Why we like this card: If you fly on American several times a year, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® could be a great fit. With an annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then ($99 thereafter) and a generous welcome bonus offer that can help you rack up AAdvantage miles, the card offers incredible value, especially in the first year of card ownership.

Plus, there are several airline-specific benefits on the AAdvantage Platinum Select card that can make your travels easier. These include a 25% discount on in-flight food and beverage purchases, priority boarding, and the star perk for most travelers—your first checked bag free on select American flights for the primary cardholder and up to four travel companions.

First checked baggage fees for domestic flights range from $35 to $40 per bag. Thus, this benefit alone could save significant money if you frequently travel with family or other people.

The card also offers a $125 American Airlines flight discount after $20,000 in purchases within a year and after the card is renewed.

Best for no annual fee: American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Mastercard®

Maybe you fly American Airlines once in a while, and would like a card that earns miles and keeps the miles in your count from expiring, but you don’t want to pay an annual fee. In that case, the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Mastercard® is your best (really your only) option.

Why we like this card: The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card is the airline's entry-level card, which means it has fewer benefits than the AAdvantage Platinum card. However, one way to prevent AAdvantage miles from expiring after 24 months is to be the primary cardholder on an American Airlines credit card. And, the MileUp card charges no annual fee, making it your best choice if you only rarely fly on American.

The MileUp card comes with a so-so bonus offer but only requires $500 spending in the first three months to earn it, so it should be attainable for most cardholders. You’ll also receive a 25% discount on in-flight food and beverage purchases when you use your card to pay and will earn miles at OK bonus rates on American Airlines purchases and at the grocery store.

Unfortunately for an airline credit card, the MileUp card does charge a 3% of the U.S. dollar amount of each transaction., so it’s not what we recommend keeping in your wallet if flying internationally.

In short, this is a bare-bones card, with rewards you probably won’t be moved to write home about and few benefits. But if you want to earn rewards redeemable for American Airlines flights and not have to worry about the miles in your account expiring, the MileUp card is a serviceable choice—particularly if you don’t usually need to check a bag and you mostly fly domestically.

Best for luxury perks: Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

Access luxury benefits, including entry to Admirals Club lounges, with the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.

Why we like this card: The Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard is for loyal American Airlines customers who want the very best benefits and perks offered by the airline and aren't afraid to pay for them. The card comes with a massive $595 annual fee but can offer enough value in the right hands to offset the cost.

Cardholders receive an annual membership to Admirals Club, the airline's airport lounge network. The membership is worth up to $850 and also provides lounge access for select family members or guests traveling with you.

The Citi / AAdvantage Executive card also offers a huge welcome bonus and an incredibly high earning rate on American Airlines purchases. Plus, you can earn an even higher rate after spending $150,000 in a calendar year. You’ll also enjoy a first checked bag free on domestic American flights for you and up to eight companions traveling on the same reservation.

In addition, the card provides priority check-in (where available) and boarding, priority screening at select airports, a credit to reimburse the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, credits for Grubhub purchases, Lyft rides, and Avis and Budget car rentals, a 25% discount on in-flight purchases of food and beverages, and a dedicated concierge to assist with travel, shopping, dining and more.

Travelers will also appreciate an array of insurance benefits: trip delay protection, trip cancellation and interruption protection, worldwide car rental insurance and lost baggage protection.

Check out our full review of the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® .

Best for renters: Bilt Rewards Mastercard

The Bilt Mastercard earns rewards on rent payments, travel, and dining. These points can be transferred to numerous airline and hotel loyalty programs, including American Airlines AAdvantage. If you’re a traveler who prioritizes flexibility over perks on one specific airline, the Bilt card might be right for you.

Why we like this card: The Bilt Rewards Mastercard is becoming a favorite of renters everywhere. The card offers something rare—the ability to earn rewards on rent payments while avoiding the convenience fee typically charged for paying rent by credit card.

Cardholders earn 3X on dining, 2X on travel booked directly or in the Bilt portal, 1X on rent (up to 100,000 points per year) and 1X on other purchases. You must use the card five or more times per statement period to earn points.

Bilt offers a myriad of redemption options, including more than a dozen airline and hotel transfer partners—the American Airlines Advantage program among them. At the time of writing, Bilt is one of the main flexible credit card rewards programs allowing points transfers to American. Points transfer 1:1 to all partners. (Marriott Bonvoy is another program where points can be transferred to American, but at a 3:1 rate.)

The Bilt card is great for international travel, too, with no foreign currency conversion fees. However, one downfall of this otherwise standout card is that it has no welcome bonus.

On the other hand, cardholders can earn double points (up to 10,000 points) on all non-rent spending the first of every month, dubbed Rent Day. This means 6X on dining, 4X on eligible travel and 2X on other purchases excluding rent.

The Bilt card also offers primary rental car insurance (except to New York State residents), trip cancellation and interruption protection, and trip delay reimbursement. These are surprisingly robust travel benefits for a no-annual-fee card.

How Do American Airline Credit Cards Work?

American Airlines credit cards earn rewards, called miles, on purchases with American Airlines and other eligible spending. These miles can be redeemed for award flights on American Airlines as well as eligible flights with Oneworld alliance airlines and partner airlines.

Beyond flights, you can redeem miles for cabin and seat upgrades, Admirals Club membership, to book rental cars, hotels and vacations, luxury and exclusive experiences or to make donations to partner charities.

In addition to rewards earning, American Airlines cards offer a range of airline-specific perks, which can vary greatly depending on the card you have. For example, the AAdvantage Platinum Select card offers a first checked bag free, potentially saving you $35 to $40 every time you fly.

Types of American Airlines Credit Cards

American Airlines is one of few brands to have co-branded credit cards through multiple issuers. Both Citi and Barclays issue American Airlines credit cards.

At the time of writing, the only Barclays-issued American Airlines card available to new applicants is the AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard®. (Though Barclays continues to service other previously issued American Airlines cards.)

Citi currently has three personal co-branded American Airlines cards and one business card available to new applicants. These cards are as follows:

  • American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Mastercard®
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive Mastercard®
  • CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®

How to choose the best American Airlines credit card

When choosing an American Airlines card, consider your travel preferences and needs. Luckily, the airline offers several options to suit different types of travelers. American Airlines cards offer a range of benefits and annual fees—from a card with no annual fee to one that charges $595 per year just to carry. Determine whether you just need a card to earn a few AAdvantage miles, for perks like free checked bags and priority boarding, or luxury benefits like lounge access and travel-related credits.

Should you get an American Airlines credit card?

You should consider an American Airlines credit card if American is your preferred airline and offers flights to the travel destinations you frequent. For example, if you live in a city with a big American Airlines hub (think DFW in Dallas or CLT in Charlotte), a card that rewards you for flying American is probably a solid choice.

On the flipside, American Airlines doesn't fly everywhere, so it may not offer flights out of your home airport or to destinations you regularly visit. If that’s the case, you may get more utility out of a different airline credit card or flexible travel card .

Frequently asked questions

Do american airlines credit cards come with free checked bags .

Most American Airlines co-branded credit cards that are currently available come with a free first checked bag on eligible domestic flights. The only one that does not come with a free checked bag is the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card.

Do you get priority boarding with American Airlines credit cards?

Almost all American Airlines co-branded credit cards offer preferred boarding for cardholders. The one exception is the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card.

How many American Airlines miles do you need for a free flight?

The amount of miles needed to book award flights through American Airlines varies based on the date, destination and other factors. American Airlines award flights start at around 7,500 miles one way plus taxes and fees.

Do AAdvantage miles expire?

Yes. Unless you take an action that extends the life of your miles, they expire after 24 months. However, qualifying activity (earning or redeeming miles on American or with a partner airline) extends the life of your miles 24 months from when you took that action.

And, if you’re the primary cardholder on an American Airlines co-branded credit card account, you don’t have to worry about your miles expiring while the account is open and in good standing.

What credit card rewards transfer to American Airlines?

You can transfer points earned with the Bilt Mastercard to American Airlines and receive AAdvantage miles in exchange.

Several hotel loyalty programs with accompanying credit cards also allow you to transfer points to American Airlines AAdvantage program, including World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy, IHG One Rewards, Wyndham Rewards and Drury Rewards. Conversion ratios vary between the programs so check to see how much your points are worth in American Airlines miles before you transfer them.

However, popular credit card rewards programs including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Chase Ultimate Rewards cannot transfer points directly to American Airlines. Instead, you’d have to look for a workaround involving a partner airline, such as transferring your Chase points to British Airways and using British Airways Executive Club to search for partner flights on American metal.

American Airlines changes its frequent flyer rules—again

American Airlines is making some changes.

Looking to achieve frequent-flyer status with American Airlines? Book direct.

The carrier has announced another round of changes to its loyalty program, saying passengers will only receive Loyalty Points and AAdvantage miles if they book directly with American, one of its partners, or a “preferred” travel agency. Flights booked elsewhere won’t earn miles.

The new rules go into effect in July.

At present, there’s no word on which agencies qualify as “preferred”—and it could be early June before that’s cleared up. The Wall Street Journal says that classification will depend “on whether they have adopted modern booking technology.”

“Booking with us provides a better travel experience,” the carrier argued in its announcement. “You can manage your trip online, receive travel credit for canceled trips and more. Plus, you’ll continue to earn miles and Loyalty Points through our non-airline partners and on eligible purchases with an AAdvantage credit card.”

Direct booking also lowers costs for the carrier.

For passengers who opt for basic economy fares, booking direct is the only way they’ll earn AAdvantage Miles or Loyalty Points. Preferred travel agency bookings will not be eligible.

American last announced a major overhaul of its frequent-flyer program in 2021, doing away with using how far or often someone flew to calculate status. That’s when Loyalty Points were introduced, which could be earned via travel or spending on branded credit cards.

Other airlines have followed its lead, with Delta announcing a big overhaul on its SkyMiles rewards program last year, which resulted in a bit of a rebellion among that company’s customers, forcing Delta to walk back some of its changes .

American noted that any existing reservations booked with third parties or non-preferred travel agencies will earn miles or Loyalty Points.
