Mekong River Cruise: Cambodia and Vietnam

Unforgettable journeys on asia’s most legendary river.

thailand mekong river cruise

At the same time, the lower Mekong basin is also a cradle for nature. It’s home to a wealth of fish that provides sustenance for the people and a myriad species of large waterbirds. In the verdant rice fields dotted with pockets of lush greenery, more bird and domestic wildlife species can be spotted along with the ubiquitous Brahman oxen that diligently work the fields. Aqua Expeditions’ luxury river cruise ship, Aqua Mekong, charts a path through the picturesque lower Mekong basin with expert guides on board. Navigating the Mekong river aboard our best-in-class vessel and following in the footsteps of royalty who have sailed before, this is the most enjoyable and rewarding way to experience the region.

Aqua Mekong offers luxurious cruising for those ready to experience a new adventure. Enjoy world-class Cambodian and Vietnamese cruises from the safety and comfort of a state of the art ship.

Home to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat temple complex at Siem Reap, Cambodia is a treasure trove of cultural relics from the Khmer empire. Today, intriguing remnants of Khmer culture exist alongside ethnic tribal traditions — with stunning green hills and sprawling rice fields as backdrop.

Situated in the Easternmost part of Indochina peninsula, Vietnam is a country that evokes highly visual memories: rows of street vendors wearing conical hats (nón lá), water buffalos plodding across rice fields and colourful floating markets on the Mekong river.

thailand mekong river cruise

The 12th longest river in the world at 2,703 miles (4,350km), the Mekong flows from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea through China, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The lower Mekong basin, encompassing Cambodia and Vietnam, is the most commonly navigated section, with local sampans and boats a common sight along with river cruise ships such as the Aqua Mekong.

Mekong River Cruise

Our family including 4 and 8 year old children absolutely loved our journey along the Mekong River. Hong was so helpful and thorough working out our requirements and making sure everything was to our satisfaction. I sent numerous requests and questions, and Hong patiently and efficiently handled them all. The river cruise was wonderful, and exceeded our expectations. We were a little worried about the safety of the 4yo on board the boat, but the staff were fantastic and the other passengers were very kind to both children. I thoroughly recommend this company to ensure a fantastic and memorable Mekong River cruise Valerie Vermaas - Australia

An unforgettable cruise in the North of Laos.

Located in Luang Prabang , Shompoo cruise is a travel agency specializing in river cruises on the Mekong. We operate with four traditional slow boats full of charm. In the past, the only ways to navigate the Mekong between Houay Xay – town border of Thailand next to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai – and Luang Prabang, were take a public slow boat with minimal comfort, or rent an expensive private boat.

Shompoo Cruise is now here to make up for this lack !

MEKONG RIVER CRUISES

Worlds Best Cruise Line

Discover the hidden worlds on the Mekong River

If you're travelling to South East Asia and want to immerse yourself in the rich culture, what better way to do so than on a Mekong River cruise.

The Mekong River is the 12th largest in the world, it winds its way from Southwest China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia before it reaches the vast delta of Vietnam.

With an estimated length of 4,350km, there are many places to visit and embarking on a river cruise with Pandaw allows you to experience these remote towns and villages in a way like no other. From the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, (formerly Siagon) to the sleepier town of Luang Prabang in Laos. From the majestic Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to the multi-cultural town of Jinghong in China's Yunnan Province; we can take you there.

Meet local artisans and dancers, learn about the history from the natives themselves, and with Pandaw you can do it in comfort and style. The dining experience allows you to sample the local cuisine and is cooked using ingredients sourced as locally as possible.

Your staterooms are elegant and spacious and come with added extras such as fruit and flowers on arrival, kimonos, slippers and spa-branded amenities to make your stay that little bit more special. Whilst your peace and serenity are of utmost importance to us, when you're not onshore meeting the locals you can enjoy cultural performances, cooking demonstrations or a themed movie night.

Hi, I was hoping you could assist me with a booking. I am looking to do a cruise for 3nights/4days while I am in Ho Chi Minh City for work. I am looking forward to the 12th of April to start the cruise. I do want a ship that has a private balcony, perhaps some cultural entertainment at night and spa services. I like the idea of upstream, as I love tropical beaches, etc but also love the idea of the markets on the river, etc. What are your recommendations? I look forward to hearing back from you. I will be travelling on my own. I was looking at this one, however, just wondering about transit since I will be flying in and out of Ho Chi Minh City.

Hi! According to your request. We suggest you should book RV Mekong Princess Cruise Upstream 3 days: Saigon - Can Tho and then return to HCMC for departure flight by private car or shuttle bus.

Or else, you can book a Mekong Delta 3 day tour package to explore more in this area.

As you only have a few days and departure from HCMC, it isn't recommended to have a cruise tour to Cambodia as you don't have enough time. Also, there's no option for cruise with beach in itinerary from HCMC

Luang Prabang, Laos

A sleepy peninsula at the heart of northern Lao mountains where time stands still, Luang Prabang will slow your pulse and make your holiday unhurried with its easygoing vibe and world-class comfort. If this historic town is on your bucket list, make sure you give it more a couple of days to experience all of its incredible charm, from cultural gems to natural wonders and fun outdoors. Set at the sacred confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River that almost surround the city, Luang Prabang is the former capital of Laos and becomes world-famous when its ancient town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The whole townscape is a delight for taking a stroll and traveling back in time to uncover much of the town’s history past. As a visitor, you cannot help but get amazed by the exceptional fusion of Lao traditional urban architecture and 19th century European colonial style buildings, which is all co-existing in a perfect harmony with the verdant greenery and rugged mountains of the sacred Mount Phousi.  Let’s start your cultural trip in Luang Prabang with an early wake up to witness Tak Bat or the Alms Giving Ceremony. Every morning before the sun rises, the monks in saffron robes will walk barefoot with their alms bowls to silently collect almsgiving from the faithful Theravada Buddhists, from the main street of the town spreading out to all the side streets. The tranquil scene is one of the most meaningful experiences in Laos, and tourists are expected to watch the old tradition respectfully from a distance. Continue your journey towards a collection of historical structures in this beautiful town. The most famous site is Wat Xieng Thong, the oldest monastery in the city built in 1560. The temple is noted for its typical roofs in Lao style and a stunning 'tree of life' mosaic on the western exterior wall. Other noteworthy attractions are Royal Palace Museum, Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, Wat Pa Phai, and Wat Mahathat. While in the town, you can also spend time exploring local centers like Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Center or Big Brother Mouse to learn more about the culture of Luang Prabang residents and how they try to make the life better. For foodies, participating a cooking class is an excellent option to sample authentic Lao cuisine as well as take home some great recipes. If you get enough discovery on culture and heritage, venture out of town to the nature. You can choose a host of outdoor activities with varied levels of difficulty, such as taking a swim in the spectacular Kuang Si Falls, river cruising to Pak Ou Caves, trekking with elephants through lush jungle, getting off the beaten path along meandering mountain-bike trails, kayaking or rafting along the river of Nam Xuang.

Laos is known for its serene natural beauty and charming cultural heritage, and what better way to explore this country than by a river cruise on the mighty Mekong River. While some of the popular cruises are still closed due to the pandemic, there are still many options available for a memorable cruise experience.

For those with limited time, there are two-day cruises between Houeixay and Luang Prabang, which offer a one-night stopover in the picturesque town of Pakbeng. Some popular cruise options for this itinerary include Shompoo, Le Grand, and Nava.

For those who wish to explore more of northern Laos, there are five-night or ten-night cruises offered by Mekong Sun and Mekong Pearl, respectively. These cruises take you from the border town of Houexay to Vientiane, stopping at various charming towns and villages along the way.

Luxury cruise options include the RV Pandaw and Anouvong cruises, offering three-night or nine-night itineraries between Houeixay and Luang Prabang or Vietiane. For a more private and intimate experience, you can opt for a two-night cruise on the Gypsy, a small private cruise boat. Get ready to experience the breathtaking natural beauty of Laos and immerse yourself in its rich cultural heritage on a river cruise.
