Roadtrips from the Netherlands to Germany: a guide to your summer getaways

After a road trip from the Netherlands to Germany because you’re feeling bored of the Netherlands? Of course, you’re not! But we all itch for somewhere new every now and then.

And a road trip to Germany is a perfect way to kick off your summer. Being someone who regularly jumps in the car and explores the neighbouring countries , I will share with you my three favourite places to visit that you can easily drive to in a day.

Depending on where you live in the Netherlands, some of these cities will be closer than others. If you’re in the northeast, head to Hamburg. If you live in the southwest, I recommend Cologne and Dusseldorf. Or if you aren’t fussed about the drive at all like me, and live in the west, then just head to any of them!

Visiting Hamburg

The second biggest city in Germany, the third-largest port in Europe, fascinating history as a Medieval Hanseatic League member, and beautiful architecture — these are just a few reasons why road-tripping from the Netherlands to Hamburg is a must. What are the top spots to explore?

Walk around the Speicherstadt

This is the warehouse district area in Hamburg, which was once full of activity with working citizens. Although it may not be the same today, it’s still full of activity — but for a different reason. Now, the warehouses are transformed into shops, attractions, restaurants, and apartments. Definitely worth a visit!

Go and see the Hamburg Rathaus and surrounding areas

The town hall (just like in many places in the Netherlands) is a pretty amazing piece of architecture that is worth a look at. It’s free to enter and there are exhibitions inside. You can also pay for a tour.

Go to Planten un Blomen

This park has 47 hectares of beautiful scenery, which includes a botanical garden, lawns, and ponds. It’s the perfect place to go for a little walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Discovering Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is a must-road trip destination if you’re into cities with rich history and mind-blowing architecture. While the city has much to explore, here are three things you should definitely consider doing on your next visit:

Go up the Rine tower

This is the tallest building in Düsseldorf and it’s the perfect place to snap some amazing Instagram shots. It dominates the skyline too, so you can’t miss it! 😊

Walk around Hofgarten

This German public park is beautiful to walk around on a sunny day. It features historic monuments and old city gates. A place you can truly be at one with nature.

Have a drink on one of the terraces

There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the river or in the centre of Düsseldorf, making the city the perfect place to go to if it’s a sunny day. Plus you can admire all of the cool architecture.

Exploring Cologne

Cologne’s close proximity to Maastricht makes it a popular road trip destination for anyone who lives in the south of the Netherlands. The city has many beautiful corners to discover and these things should definitely be a part of your road trip to Cologne itinerary:

Visit Cologne cathedral

You can’t really miss the cathedral, as it towers over much of the city (it’s the second-highest building in Cologne!). Both the outside and the inside of the cathedral are highly impressive and if you want to go inside you only have to pay a small fee (which, in my opinion, is definitely worth it). You can also climb the south tower to get some pretty cool views over the city.

Go up the KölnTriangle

The KölnTriangle is a modern building providing panoramic views of the entire city. So, if you aren’t too scared of heights and want to experience the city from above, then this is one to go for.

Check out Cologne Old Town

Most of Cologne was destroyed in WWII, so a lot of it is fairly modern. This part of Cologne gives you a taste of what it used to be like — plus it’s just really beautiful.

Berlin to Amsterdam in 3 days: A Road Trip Guide where you visit 7 cities

Road tripping from Berlin to Amsterdam is a great way to discover many fun cities in two great countries of Europe: Germany and the Netherlands. Both are unique and have so much to offer. Before getting started on your road trip, there is a lot to consider and plan - where to stay, where to eat, what sights to see, and more.

This blog gives you inspiration for a route with the best local tips and necessary stops! Let’s begin with the starting point of this journey: Berlin.

Day 1: Start your journey the right way: Brunch in Berlin!

You’ll need to prepare yourself for the journey ahead with a nourishing breakfast! Thankfully, Berlin has many wonderful brunch options, such as Cafe Einstein. This cafe is located in a historical building and serves traditional breakfasts from around the world. It’s the perfect place to begin your adventure.

Where to park in Berlin

Around the corner from Cafe Einstein, you can park your car at the Sheraton Grand Esplanade Hotel . This parking is safe and cheap - only €3 per hour, making it a great alternative to street parking.

Take a walk in Großer Tiergarten

Just up the street is Großer Tiergarten, Berlin’s largest and oldest park. You will be driving for a while after this, so take your time to stretch your legs and walk off your brunch in this 210-hectare park. Originally created in the 16th century as a royal hunting ground, Großer Tiergarten is now a public park full of open lawns, tree-lined paths, and numerous memorials and cultural sights.

Next stop: Make your way to Hamburg

Hamburg is a port city in northern Germany along the Elbe river. It's famous old port, known as HafenCity, is definitely worth seeing for its 19th-century red-brick warehouses that line the multiple canals. Dive deeper into Hamburg’s shipping history by visiting the International Maritime museum . The museum’s exhibits show more than 3,000 years of maritime history!

Where to eat: Lunch in Hamburg

By this time, you’ll probably be getting hungry for a late lunch. And what’s better than eating a hamburger in Hamburg? Luckily, Bobby’s Burger will satisfy your cravings. Next stop: Drive from Hamburg to Bremen

It’s time to get moving for the last stop of the day. An hour-and-a-half drive on the A1 highway will bring you to Bremen, another maritime city in Northwestern Germany.

Where to park in Bremen

When arriving in Bremen, head straight to the Courtyard by Marriott near Bremen’s central station for cheap and secure parking. This parking lot is centrally located, meaning you can easily park here and walk around the city for sightseeing.

What to do in Bremen

A popular site to see in Bremen is the historic marketplace, called the Marktplatz. It is located in the Old Town in the heart of the city. Here, you can see the town hall, built in a beautiful mix of Renaissance and Gothic styles. A statue of Roland, Germany’s most famous knight, is also located in this square. If you visit during the Christmas season, the Marktplatz is temporarily transformed into an authentic German Christmas market .

Where to stay in Bremen

After a long day of driving and sightseeing, you’ll be ready to rest your eyes. The Hotel Munt Am Stadtwald is an eco-hotel located in the city park of Bremen. The hotel includes a healthy dinner and breakfast as well as a spa and wellness centre. It has reasonably priced rooms that still ensure comfort and relaxation during your stay.

Day 2: Begin with breakfast in Bremen

Rise and shine with breakfast at YellowBird Coffee in Bremen. This quaint and cosy cafe serves speciality coffee and delicious healthy breakfasts. You’ll need to fuel up here for the drive ahead!

Drive from Bremen to Düsseldorf

Via the A1 highway, you can reach Düsseldorf in about 3 and a half hours. If you have time, some nice stops along the way are the cities of Münster, Dortmund, or Essen. If you choose not to stop, you’ll likely be ready to stretch your legs and have a bite to eat when reaching Düsseldorf.

Park at the Dusseldorf South Moxy Hotel for convenient and cheap parking. For only €10 per day, it is possible to park even if you are not a guest of the hotel. Located next to highway A46 and Ubahn stop Holthausen, it is a great location to head into the city centre while skipping the busy traffic.

What to do and where to eat in Düsseldorf

Experience a typical German market in Dusseldorf at the Carlsplatz Markt . This calm and neat market offers plenty of souvenirs as well as flowers, fresh fruits, cheese, bread, and meats. It’s also a great place to visit around lunchtime, as stands in the market serve a delicious variety of sandwiches, falafel, and handmade pasta.

Next stop: Cross the Dutch/German border to Eindhoven

A short 1 and a half-hour drive from Düsseldorf will bring you to Eindhoven, a city in the south of The Netherlands. Eindhoven is the fifth-largest city in The Netherlands and is known as a thriving hub for technology and design.

Where to park in Eindhoven

For easy, central parking, head to the Park Plaza Eindhoven hotel . Parking is available here for just €2 per hour. It is only a 7-minute walk from the Stadhuisplein and other central sights, so it is the perfect cheap parking spot in the city!

For cheap and convenient parking at Eindhoven Central Station, park at The Social Hub Eindhoven . From here you can easily reach Eindhoven's central shopping area and you will have a secure parking spot for just €2 per hour, all in the very heart of the city!

What to do in Eindhoven

A beautiful piece of history in Eindhoven is St. Catherine’s cathedral , located in the centre of the city. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria and was first built in the 1200s. It experienced some damage during WWII, however, it has been exquisitely restored and is lit up in beautiful colours at night.

What to eat in Eindhoven

Suppose you want to experience Eindhoven like a local, the best place to eat is Café 't Rozenknopje (The Rosebud). It is known as “the living room” for everyone in the city and is a cafe and live music hall in one. Go here for live music and performances as well as a cozy bar with burgers, fries, and traditional Dutch snacks like "bitterballen" and "frikandalletjes".

Where to stay in Eindhoven

A cool and creative (and better yet, budget-friendly) place to stay in Eindhoven is Hotel The Match . Located in the heart of Eindhoven, this hotel guarantees you all the comfortable amenities you could want with reasonably-priced rooms. They also offer excellent city guides filled with local tips about the city. Plus, the hotel is full of beautiful art and design to enjoy.

Day 3: Start your day with brunch in Eindhoven

After a restful night, start with a delicious breakfast to give you energy for the last leg of your journey. DENF Coffee is the perfect place! This industrial cafe roasts all their beans in-house and has a wide assortment of coffees to choose from. They also have a delicious breakfast menu including overnight oats and chai pancakes, for example.

Drive from Eindhoven to Rotterdam

It’s time to explore more of The Netherlands! Via the A58 and A16 highway, you can reach Rotterdam in 1 hour and 25 minutes. Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and has the largest port in Europe. It is also known for its modern, impressive architecture.

Where to park in Rotterdam

The Holiday Inn Express Hotel at Rotterdam central station offers an easy parking solution in the centre of the city. You can park there for just €3 per hour and explore the entire centre of Rotterdam by foot or with public transportation . This location is ideal for easy access to the rest of the city.

What to do in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is situated on the Nieuwe Maas river and has beautiful harbours and ports. A boat tour is an excellent way to see the city from the water. There are many different boat tours available, as well as a water taxi that will take you from one side of the river to the other.

Rotterdam is also full of interesting architecture, so make sure to keep your eye out for unique buildings. The Cube Houses are an extraordinary sight and popular amongst tourists. They are a set of houses in a cuboid structure, tilted at a 45-degree angle. People actually live in these apartments, and one is even open for public viewing.

If the weather isn’t ideal, another idea is to visit the Kunsthal museum . This museum is located in the Museumpark of Rotterdam and showcases art, from 20th-century pieces to contemporary art. Some interesting exhibitions that have been displayed at the Kunsthal are Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Drawn: Rotterdam! The City in Lockdown.

It’s time for the last stop of the trip: Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands. The drive from Rotterdam is only 1 hour on the A4 highway. Amsterdam is a picturesque and cozy city filled with bikes, canals, and narrow, crooked houses, so get your camera ready for some beautiful sights!

Best Time to Visit Germany

The German climate is fairly typical of central European weather.

The high season is considered to be between April to August when the weather is generally warm. If you want to increase your chances of a dry holiday without rain, roadtrip in Germany between July and September. Temperatures during this period fluctuate between 68°F/20°C to 86°F/30°C.

The colder low-season German weather starts in November and lasts until late March or early April. Snow is common across the country, with temperatures dropping well below freezing. By late March, snow turns to rain, a sure sign that spring is on the way!

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t choose to take a German road trip in winter. As a European winter destination , Germany packs a real punch with fantastic Christmas markets, winter activities in Bavaria, and everywhere dusted in snow.

The Mosel Valley

Koblenz – Cochem – Beilstein – Zell am Mosel – Traben Trarbach – Trier

A beautiful river snaking through it, soaring medieval castles dotted across it, and almost vertical vineyards nestled on its hills. It’s the picturesque Mosel (or Moselle) Valley, and this is one of the best roads in Germany for wine lovers!

Punctuated by the small but beautiful Mosel river, the valley essentially stretches from the small city of Koblenz, a fairy-tale German town, to Trier along the water’s edge.

This breathtaking valley is best explored by taking a least a week, the pinnacle of slow travel as you hop from one riverside town to the next.

Kick off your west Germany road trip in Koblenz, where the mouth of the Mosel meets the Rhine, to walk along the ancient Roman walls or just amble through the Altstadt (old town), before heading to visit the first traditional  town of Cochem .

On the way there, avid Instagrammers and history buffs should definitely make a turn at Burg Eltz, one of the most spectacular castles and hidden gems in Germany , to take the requisite snap. Once in Cochem, you’ll slow the pace.

You can marvel at the unique vineyards (a signature of the entire Mosel road trip), where the vines crawl up the hillside at 90-degree angles. If you go in harvest time, you’ll see the workers strapped into harnesses with spiked boots just to be able to pick the ripe grapes.

Cochem also boasts one of  Germany’s legendary castles  looming above it, plus it’s the best place to just take a walk along the promenade, stopping in at one of the riverfront cafes for a plate of zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) and a sparkling glass of federweisser , a traditional fizzy grape drink.

Your next few nights should definitely see you stay over in one of the many lovely towns sprinkled along the river: Beilstein for the Burg Metternich castle, a climb up the hill (and more traditional German food) in Zell am Mosel and our favorite stop on the entire itinerary, Traben Trarbach.

This gorgeous little town used to be two villages, Traben and Trarbach, on opposite sides of the river, which were eventually united with the construction of a short bridge.

Before you hit your final destination of Trier, stay overnight in Bernkastel-Kues, a spa town peppered with wood-timbered houses, many a hot spring, and the ruins of the Landshut Castle.

Before you know it, your German road trip is at an end, as it culminates in the beguiling town of Trier. An old Roman city with landmarks like the Porta Nigra black gate, an old-school amphitheater, the Roman baths, and a towering cathedral, just to name a few.

It’s here that you should raise a(nother) glass of perfectly poured Riesling in celebration of the Mosel valley, one of the best road trips in Germany.

The German Fairy Tale Road

Frankfurt – steinau – marburg – kassel – gottingen – hamelin – bremen.

This central to north Germany road trip from Frankfurt does not technically start in the city, but Frankfurt is the perfect place to fly into and pick up a rental car. If you’re spending the night, make sure you visit the South Bank, where you’ll find an eclectic selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs.

The Fairy Tale route officially starts in the pretty town of Steinau an der Strasse where the Brothers Grimm lived until they were aged twelve.

The setting is straight out of their own fairy tales, complete with typical half-timbered houses, twisting cobbled alleys, and the turreted fairy tale castle of Schloss Steinau which overlooks the whole town. Visit the Brüder Grimm Haus and Museum Steinau, both of which showcase the works of the brothers.

Take the back roads to Marburg and enjoy the gorgeous landscapes and slower pace for a few hours. Marburg’s altstadt is full of medieval houses and the hilltop Landgrafenschloss, a dramatic castle holding exhibits on sacred art and local history.

Lively bars and restaurants line the Marktplatz and the narrow streets surrounding it, making this a great location for an overnight stop.  

From Marburg, head to Kassel, where the Brothers Grimm spent their teenage years whilst working as librarians for the King of Westphalia, Jerome Bonaparte, the younger brother of the infamous Napoléon.

There is very little left of historic Kassel but there are two worthwhile attractions to visit; the Brüder Grimm Museum, and the Schloss und Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a tranquil green space and the largest hill park in all of Europe.

Gottingen is home to the University of Gottingen, where the Grimm Brothers once served as professors. Make for the traditional and atmospheric central market square, where the statue of Ganseliesel, the little goose girl of German lore, is one of the most kissed statues anywhere in the world. It is said that the kisser is rewarded with good luck, but maybe post-virus this practice will change!

Hameln (or Hamelin) is next up and one of the most famous fairy tale destinations in Europe. Hameln is the home of the Pied Piper, or Rattenfänger, who rid the town of rats in 1284, only to be cheated out of his payment.

The Pied Piper returned to Hameln a year later and lured away all the children. The story is re-enacted in the town center every Sunday between May and October and is a fantastic spectacle.  

The Weser Renaissance architecture of the Rattenfängerhaus and the Hochzeitshaus makes a fitting historic backdrop for the streets which are thronged with locals dressed the part, stalls selling food, and live music playing. 

Finally, on to the Hanseatic city of Bremen, your final stop. Good places to visit in Bremen include the traditional Marktplatz, which is located in the city’s charming altstadt, the 600-year-old Rathaus or town hall, the Roselius-Haus Museum, and the stunning St. Petri Dom, the 11th century gothic cathedral.

Another landmark can be found in the city’s central town square – a statue of the Bremen musicians and heroes of the Brothers Grimm story, “The Town Musicians of Bremen.”  

If you have time, extend your trip and head to the modern and progressive port city of Hamburg. Explore the historic districts, edgy culture, and extraordinary commercial past with our one day Hamburg itinerary.

The romantic road.

One of the best southern Germany road trips is along the scenic route known as the Romantic Road or Romantische Strasse. This Bavaria road trip stretches for 340km from Wurzburg to Fussen, the route has many highlights and passes through some of Germany’s prettiest landscapes and most fairy tale towns and villages. 

Whilst you could travel this entire Bavaria itinerary in one or two days, to make the most of your Romantic Road drive , I suggest you allow at least 5 days in Bavaria, which will give you the chance to stop and explore many of the 29 towns along the route, of which the best six are listed above. 

The first stop on Germany’s Romantic Road is Wurzburg, an attractive city that was almost totally destroyed in WW2. Highlights include the Marienberg Fortress, Wurzburg Cathedral, the Old Main Bridge (which crosses the River Main), and the stunning UNESCO World Heritage listed Wurzburg Residence. Wurzburg and the Franconia region are also well-known for their wines.

You’ll see vines planted in front of the Marienberg Fortress and in the surrounding countryside, so be sure to sample the local drop. 

After a couple of days in Wurzburg, head south to the fairytale town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most beautiful places in Germany.

I recommend you stop in the charming town of Weikersheim en route, there’s a beautiful castle you can visit and a small but very pretty old town. In Rothenburg, you’ll see why visitors flock here from all over the world.

The brightly painted timbered houses that line the cobbled streets and the medieval city walls with their watchtowers, ooze romanticism and entice people on day trips from all over southern Germany. 

Other highlights include St. Jacob’s Cathedral, the castle gardens, the views from the tower of City Hall and the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas Store and the German Christmas Museum.

With numerous nearby towns and villages worth a visit, too, you could easily fill three days in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Next, drive further south to your final stop at Fussen.

You’ll want to stop at Wies to visit the Wieskirche, a small baroque church with an impressive interior that is UNESCO listed.  

In Fussen, explore the old town and head to Schwangau to visit Germany’s most famous schloss , Neuschwanstein Castle, built by mad King Ludwig. If you have a few extra days, enjoy some city life by heading to Munich, where you’ll find fantastic Bavarian culture and a lively social scene. 

Base yourself here for a few days and enjoy some of the  day trips from Munich  on offer, to experience the best of the surrounding landscapes and attractions. We think this could well be the best road trip in Germany.

The Castle Circuit

Koln – Frankfurt – Mespellbrunn Castle – Stuttgart – Bad Wildbad – Heidelberg – Koblenz – Eltz Castle – Rheinstein Castle – Cochem Castle – Köln

• Drive Time 13 hours

This south Germany itinerary covers a whole mix of destinations in a fabulous circuit, visiting some of  Germany’s best castles  on the route. Starting and finishing in the graceful  city of Cologne  (Koln in Germany) this road trip covers the southwest of the country.

It takes you south as far as Stuttgart, before circling back north towards the Mosel Valley. To make the most out of this road trip, I suggest three to four days, which will give you time to enjoy the castles as well as the wine in the Rhine region; perfect for a long weekend. 

This part of the country is one of the best places to visit in Germany and you’ll get to see some of Germany’s prettiest castles, the stunning and verdant forests, the Rhine river, as well as a number of picturesque cobbled towns. Stay off the autobahns for the best driving, through beautiful landscapes and scenery.

Start your castle road trip in Koln, making sure to visit the simply stunning cathedral, and head southeast towards Frankfurt. Spend some time in the altstadt wandering around the pretty and atmospheric streets.

From here head towards Mespellbrunn Castle. It’s located pretty much in the middle of nowhere, however, it’s a stunning castle, which looks a lot like the Sleeping Beauty tower, located on a lake. 

From Mespellbrunn Castle, keep heading southeast towards Stuttgart, a beautiful city full of green and open spaces. Be sure to spend plenty of time here exploring the town and its elegant buildings.

It’s worth stopping overnight and taking advantage of the fantastic restaurants, bars and beer gardens which line the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town.

From Stuttgart, start to head back north-west. Spend time visiting the lovely Bad Wildbad in the Black Forest and maybe indulge yourself in one of the many thermal baths there.

Head for historic Heidelberg and spend some time admiring and visiting the imposing Heidelberg Castle before crossing the wide river Neckar on the famous old bridge. This is another great town for an overnight stay.

Stop by the pretty and very German town of Koblenz, before heading to Eltz Castle. If you’re looking for a quintessential fairytale castle, then Berg Eltz is it! When you’re done swooning over Eltz, head to the small complex of Rheinstein Castle high on the banks of the Rhine (or Rhein in Germany) river.  

Make for your last stop in Cochem on the gorgeous Moselle, and the impressive Cochem Castle. Stay for the night and try some of the delicious wine produced in this region or take a guided tour of a vineyard with a wine tasting.

This is a fully packed itinerary covering all the best bits of Germany. I’m sure you’ll agree, this makes a fantastic German road trip!

The German Alpine Road

Lindau – bad hindelang – pfronten – füssen – oberammergau – garmisch-partenkirchen – bad tölz – rottach-egern – oberaudorf – aschau im chiemgau – reit im winkl – berchtesgaden.

Starting at Lake Constance (Bodensee) and winding its way through the diverse and spectacular Bavarian landscape to Lake Koningssee, following the Alps from west to east, the Deutsche Alpenstrasse is simply spectacular and has to be one of the most scenic road trips in Germany.

On this south Germany road trip, the oldest tourist route in Germany, you’ll explore picture-perfect towns, alpine lakes and meadows, historic castles, and fantastic driving roads, perfect for whatever your means of transport.

Starting in the pretty harbor town of Lindau on Lake Constance, take the twisting road of the Rohrbach ascent into the Allgäu peaks, for spectacular views and the Scheidegg waterfalls in the Rohrach Gorge.

Continue through Oberstaufen, stopping for a dip in the cold and clear waters of Grosser Alpsee, to the traditional German town of Immenstadt, before crossing the Oberjoch Pass. With 106 bends, this is one of the most scenic and exciting drives of the whole route – make sure you allow enough time to stop for photos!

As you continue east, you’ll step into the fairytale world of King Ludwig II on a tour of the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Three lakes on this part of the route – Weissensee, Hopfensee, and Forggensee – offer gorgeous scenery.

Upper Bavaria, the land of drama, adventure, and extreme sports is next on the route. Here you can explore the summit of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, take in Linderhof Palace, swim in the beautiful Eibsee, and discover the many intricate Baroque churches and monasteries, like the Church of Wies. Oberammergau, home of the famous ten yearly Oberammergau Passion Play , is also in this region and well worth visiting.

Fancy a swim? The next part of the route runs through the Tölzer Land, beside Lake Walchensee, across the fabulous Kesselberg Pass, and on to Lake Kochelsee. After Benediktbeuern with its abbey, Bad Heilbrunn, Bad Tölz, and Lenggries, the route climbs to the Sylvenstein reservoir, where you’ll have fantastic views.

The next section of the route in the Tegernsee and Schliersee region sees you driving through Rottach-Egern, Tegernsee, Schliersee, and Bayrischzell, known for their restaurants and cafés that provide Bavarian hospitality and delicious local food and drink for you to sample. As you continue on, the road meanders through the mountains to Chiemsee, and panoramic views are guaranteed.

The German Alpine Route saves the best for last – crossing the 868m high Schwarzbachwacht Pass into the incredible landscape of the Berchtesgaden Alps and Konigsee, widely thought to be the most stunning lake in Germany.

If you really can’t decide which road trip to take and you have a few weeks. then why not consider taking a driving tour of Germany, hopping between some of Germany’s most historic and beautiful cities, and taking in elements of all our road trips on the way?

This road trip route will take you past or in close proximity to some of the most beautiful places in Germany including fairy tale castles and towns, famous landmarks, stunning rivers, and wine regions.

You’ll drive on fantastic roads and if you choose not to use the autobahns, you’ll enjoy a relaxed pace and be able to enjoy the ever-changing scenery and small historic towns of this surprisingly gorgeous country.  

If you’re road tripping Germany in winter, you’ll love the clear crips days, frosty landscapes and of course, the  traditional Christmas markets  that the country is famous for. Fairy lights, gluhwein, traditional artisan gifts, and hearty, warming local food will make your winter road in Germany really memorable. 

Don’t forget Germany’s recent history either. This route will take you close to both Dachau and Bergen Belsen concentration camps, which make for harrowing visits that nevertheless should be taken, lest we forget the past, which must never be repeated.

You’ll also find the opportunity to tour the top car museums of BMW in Munich and Porche and Mercedes in Stuttgart. Why not test yourself and take a drive around the famous Nurburgring on your way past?

If you are lucky enough to have three weeks or longer, then add the eclectic and fascinating  city of Berlin  to the mix, or head south from Munich for the incredible Deutsche Alpenstrasse, or German Alpine Road, one of the most scenic drives in Germany.

Tips for Driving in Germany

The roads in Germany are well maintained, the autobahns are toll-free and there are excellent regional and minor roads with great services for drivers, making Germany a fantastic place to road trip.

Contrary to popular belief though, there are speed limits on the autobahn, and many sections have limits between 120km/h (75mph) and 110km/h (68mph) or lower, especially in urban areas.

Whether you’re traveling in your own vehicle or flying in and renting a car, you need to follow these rules when you drive and travel in Germany;

• You must have at least three months remaining on your passport (issued in the past ten years) at your intended date of departure from Germany.
• You must have at least 3rd party insurance for your vehicle.
• Citizens of non-EU third countries may require an IDP, you can check here .

You do not need to go on an arduous journey to have a fun or relaxing weekend abroad. You can do so by visiting your neighboring country too. So, why not take a weekend trip to Germany?

While planning your weekend gate away from Amsterdam, you cannot miss Cologne, the cultural hub of West Germany. The 2000-year-old city is only 2 hours and 48 minutes from Amsterdam by train, making it perfect for an overnight trip nearby. 

The Romans built the city on the bank of the river Rhine around the 1st A.D. The same city rebuilt itself after it was flattened during WW2. Hence, the whole city is a shrine to history. Remnants from the Roman era to the World War, you will find it all here.

Amidst the grungy city, you will find medieval churches and buildings. The Gothic churches and Roman towers, in contrast to modern sterile concrete buildings, will make exploring the city feel like traveling through time.

If you stroll through the city’s Altstadt (Old Town), you will stumble upon Romanesque old churches like the Great St. Martin , alleyways filled with traditional homes, historical monuments and fountains, and much more. You can check out these traditional colored houses of Cologne as they have been turned into quaint boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and cafes. 

Taking the route down the Old Town and the Rhine, you will also find the towering landmark of Cologne, the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Mary. This breathtaking cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval High Gothic architecture. Built over a time spanning 600 years, this cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site today.  

Ascending over 500 steps from the roof of the Cologne Cathedral, South Tower, you will get an exquisite panoramic view of the Rhine and the Hohenzollern Bridge. Escape your monotonous life by exploring the rustic German city Münster over the weekend. You will not find the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam here, nor streets teeming with tourists. Having stated that you will find no shortage of interesting places to visit at leisure in Münster.

After you reach Münster, take a tour through Prinzipalmarkt. Along with rows of Renaissance-themed limestone buildings, you will find the significant landmarks of the city, the City hall, St. Paulus Dom, and St. Lambert Church. At the Prinzipalmarkt, you will not only take in Münster's glorious past but also explore the designer shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

You can admire medieval and high Gothic architecture while visiting St. Paulus Dom and the City Hall of Münster. The high arches, gables, and all-over elegant architecture of the City Hall are sure to stop you in your tracks. The proud twin towers, giant clock, numerous murals, statues of Jesus, and the 12 apostles of St. Paulus Dom make it a sight to behold.

On your weekend gate away from Amsterdam, explore the rich literary history and medieval architecture of Heidelberg, Germany. Start exploring the historic city from its narrow main street, Hauptstrasse, and move on to the Old Town. 

Strolling through the Hauptstrasse, you will stumble upon several medieval buildings, churches, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. At the south of the Hauptstrasse, you will find the Universitätsplatz, which dates back to the 18th century. Your introduction to the literary history of Heidelberg will start from here.

A visit to Heidelberg University and a stroll through the Philosopher’s Way will fill you with inspiration. The city houses the oldest university in Germany and one of the strongest research centers in Europe. Notable German scholars such as Franz Boas and Max Weber are alumni of this university. 

The main attraction near the Old Town is The Heidelberg Castle. This 16th-century castle is a masterpiece of German Renaissance architecture. If you visit Heidelberg between June to August, you will be able to catch the various festivals and fireworks that take place in the courtyard of this castle. 

Heidelberg Castle Festival featuring choral music, opera, jazz, folk, and eclectic music, is one of the most famous events that occur here. From the castle, you will also get a spectacular view of the Old Town below. You can reach the castle via a cable car or take a 15-minute walk from the Old Town.

The appeal of Heidelberg does not end here. Besides the Castle and the Old Town, you can visit Heiligenberg Hill or the parks around the Neckar River. Along the Neckar River, you will find a well-famed Old Bridge, which has been immortalized in several paintings and poems. From here, you can quietly marvel at the scenic view of Heidelberg.

Opposite the Neckar River and bridge, you can climb the Heiligenberg Hill. Walk along the bridge and Philosophers' Way, and you will soon find the hill. On top of the hill, you will find the ruins of St. Michael monastery and get another glimpse of German history. 

If you want to let loose on an overnight trip to a foreign country, Hamburg, Germany, is the place to visit. Here, you can get the best of both worlds. Enjoy wild nights partying at Reeperbahn and serene Sunday morning strolls at the St. Pauli Fischmarkt. 

 The laidback and liberal nature of Hamberg can be most felt in its red-light district, Reeperbahn. Head over to one of the many bars at this wild party strip and get yourself some drinks, and have a good time.

Reeperbahn is not only famous for its wild parties visited by world-famous DJs but also the Beatles. Yes, you have read right. The Beatles used to play in the Reeperbahn strip while they rose to fame. If you are a major Beatles fan, you are going to love the Beatles tour of Hamburg. 

If you are looking for a slightly less crazy night out, head over to Sternschanze district. Try out the craft beers of Altes Mӓdchen. In Hamburg, you can drink beer in the morning while relaxing at the Alster Lake. You can drink beer pretty much everywhere in Hamburg, as there is no prohibition of drinking alcohol on the streets. 

Like Amsterdam, Hamburg is also a port city. Except Hamberg has more canals than in Amsterdam . You cannot leave Hamburg without taking a canal tour around the world’s largest warehouse district, Speicherstadt. The view of the illuminated red brick, Neo-Gothic buildings standing on timber-pile foundations is spectacular at night.

On your way to the Speicherstadt district, visit the Chocoversum. Explore the real-life Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory, learn the art of chocolate making, and design your custom-made chocolate bar in Chocoversum. Try the local delicacies of Hamburg at the Sunday Fischmarkt. The herring and fish sandwich here is exquisite. 

5. Dortmund

Whether you are a football fanatic wanting to visit one of the largest stadiums in Europe or a history buff wishing to stroll through an ancient city, you can get the best of both worlds in your weekend escape to Dortmund, Germany. 

Dortmund is popular for its several wooded open spaces and parks. You should visit Westfalen Park, the largest park in Dortmund. Here you can visit the Dortmund Zoo, Botanischer Garten, or ascend the Florianturm, the 212-meter Television Tower. While there, you should try out the revolving restaurant in the tower. 

Other than football and open parks, there is so much more to explore here in Dortmund. Take a stroll on the pedestrian-friendly streets of Dortmund and explore the medieval architecture of old buildings and churches. You will stumble upon 12th and 13th-century churches such as St. Reinold’s and St. Mary’s. 

If you are into vintage vehicles, check out the Local Transport Museum of Dortmund. Here you will find trams dating back to the early 1900s. Another museum you can check out is the Museum of Art and Culture which features 17-18th century Folk art, 19th-century music, gold coins, and other old artifacts. 

Best Day Trips to Visit Germany From Amsterdam

Don’t have the time and energy to plan out a whole weekend trip? No problem, just hop on a train on Amsterdam Central and take a day trip to the nearest German city. Aachen and Dusseldorf are the two nearest German cities I recommend for a day trip from Amsterdam. 

1. Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is only 224 kilometers (139 miles) from Amsterdam, and it will take you only 2 hours and 11 minutes by train to reach there. It is closer to Amsterdam than Cologne, making it a shorter journey from Amsterdam. The short journey there makes it ideal for a day trip.

You will discover that most of the tourist attractions of Düsseldorf are found along the Old Town or Alstadt road. Located on the East of the Rhine, the Rhine is surrounded by the Schloss Benrath palace and St. Lambertus Church, and many other medieval buildings.

Düsseldorf is not only a place for the history buff but also for the shopaholic. It is the fashion capital of Germany. If you are looking for posh designer shops, you will have no shortage. 

Again if you are looking for a fun night out, the central district of Düsseldorf offers a variety of pubs to choose from. It is ironically nicknamed the oldest and longest bar in the world. Here, you will find over 300 bars and restaurants concentrated in small areas.

If you are looking for a relaxing day trip abroad, Aachen is for you. This city in West Germany is 228 kilometers (141 miles) from Amsterdam, and it takes about 3 hours by train to reach Aachen from Amsterdam.

The city began as a thermal spa for the Romans, moving on to becoming a capital under the Roman emperor Charlemagne. Today, the thermal spas in Aachen still boast their past glory. Relax and soak in Carolus Thermen spa.  

With the Aachen special cookies printed in hand, you can stroll around the Old Town, discovering all that the city has to offer. Somewhere in the city square, you will find items from an archaeological excavation housed inside a free showcase building. Some of these items date back to the Neolithic age.

The main tourist attraction of this West German city is the Aachen Cathedral which dates back to 813 AD. Being one of the oldest and most stunning Cathedrals in Europe, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, you can view the grave of Charlemagne, the octagonal-shaped Palatine Chapel, and the stained glass dome. 

After visiting the Cathedral, you can check out the medieval Gothic-styled City hall. Then end your day trip with local beer from the cozy café beside the City Hall.

How to Get to Germany from Amsterdam?

You can travel comfortably and conveniently to Germany from Amsterdam via train, bus, car, and plane. If you take the train, you can reach most of the nearby German cities within 4 hours. 

Traveling by bus to nearby German cities is the most affordable option. But traveling by train or plane is much more comfortable and time-saving.

Ticket prices fluctuate enormously and are affected by various factors. For example, prices differ per provider, but the travel period also influences ticket prices. It is therefore advisable to look for tickets in advance, that way they are often a lot cheaper.

As mentioned, you can often visit beautiful places close to home. This certainly applies to people from the Netherlands or tourists staying in the Netherlands.

The Perfect European Road Trip Route: 8 Countries in 7 Days

Victoria’s Dad came to visit us in Europe and we set off on a fantastic European road trip. We were able to hit 8 countries in just 7 days. This itinerary is perfect for those of you who want to experience lots of European countries and culture in a small amount of time. In most locations, we felt like we had just enough time to experience the hidden gems of the city before moving on to the next.

We rented an RV/motor home for our road trip, but the same route can be easily accomplished with a rental car and booked lodging at each stop.

Check out this overview of our route:

We started and ended in Frankfurt, Germany [red arrow] because it was the cheapest for Victoria’s Dad to fly into. The route can be modified any way you want as Amsterdam is another budget friendly airport to arrive/depart.

Why should these cities, sites, and villages make your European road trip route? Here’s why:

Frankfurt isn’t special. Not going to lie. It is expensive to spend time in but cheap to fly into. Rental cars are reasonably priced so it is perfect to arrive, grab your car, and go. Frankfurt is also centrally located to a ton of European countries so you are pretty much set, no matter which direction you want to go.

Wurzburg is the start of Germany’s romantic road and the perfect place to spend your first night . It is a bit outside expensive Frankfurt and cute enough to start your journey off on a pleasant foot.

There are tons of towns along the Romantic Road, but Rothenburg was our favorite and is our top suggestions. The historic city center is built inside an old castle with a moat and all. The buildings are traditionally “German,” the cafes and bakeries are affordable, and the cathedrals are spectacular. Make sure to take the time to climb the old church tower and take in the view. It is free to climb the tower and only costs 2 euro to go out on the tiny rooftop area. The views of the village and German landscape are totally worth the cost.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

The well known German castle and inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella castle sits at the end of the Romantic road and is where you will be spending your second night . The castle is near the town of Schwangau which features plenty of hotels and hostels.

Bregenz is a super cool stop because you have the chance to ride a cable car to the top of a mountain and you can see four countries all at once! On a nice day, pack a picnic lunch you bought at a local grocery store and feast atop the mountain before heading on to your next stop along your European road trip route.

Lichtenstein is the smallest place ever so you can breeze right on through in 1-2 hours max. Did you know that real royalty still live in a castle on a cliff in Vaduz? Pretty cool to stalk…err..view from the road below and imagine what they are doing inside. Plus, you get to add  “Lichtenstein” to the list of places you have been.

Lake Lucerne is one of the prettiest places you ever did see. It is postcard “Swiss” featuring a deep blue lake surrounded by beautiful green fields and towering snow-capped mountains. In the warmer months, the lake is a haven for watersports lovers. Even driving around the lake is impressive, but you are going to want to really take in the landscape. Lake Lucerne is where you spend your third night .

The Black Forest was given its name because the forest is so thick that the trees literally appear black. Don’t make the same mistake we did and believe all the Photoshopped images you see online. The trees themselves do not actually have black bark. It is called the Black Forest because of the density of the landscape. Since you spent the morning on Lake Lucerne and the afternoon hiking in the Black Forest, you will spend your fourth night in this famous German National Park.

Trier is roughly 2,000 years old and is the oldest city in this part of Europe. The city is full of ancient Roman ruins such as old churches, baths, and aqua ducts. Trier is perfect if you are looking to get a piece of ancient history but don’t have time to trek all the way down to Rome. Make sure to do the free walking tour of the city and to visit Trier’s many churches. This is where you will spend your fifth night. 

Pryre is very close to Luxembourg so the capital is the perfect place for you to start your sixth day. Luxembourg City is one of the prettiest cities we have ever been to and the country offers free wifi to everyone which we loved. Make sure to take the time to walk through the old city, past the current royal residence [they are super proud of their royal family], and around the central city park.

Bruges is known as the “Venice of the North” because the city is built on a huge network of canals. The building style is unlike anything we have ever seen and each and every home is unique so walking the narrow streets is a treat. You can go on a small boat ride through the canals for under 10 euros a person which gives you a different perspective of the city. Have your camera ready because this village is Instagram-worthy. You will s pend your sixth night in Bruges.

Delft is the home of the pretty blue Delft China! If shopping for dishes or looking at internationally known craftsmanship is your thing, stop in Delft and have some brunch. Keep an eye out for the traditional dutch windmills along your drive!

While you are in Amsterdam, take a moment to stroll through the infamous red light district and pay homage to history at Anne Frank’s house. If you want to visit the Anne Frank Memorial, it is free and quiet. Looking to visit her home? Get ready for tons of people and at least an hour wait. Amsterdam is also the home to tons of tulips so if you come during the right time of year, make sure to find some on your way in and out of town. You will spend your last night in Amsterdam before heading off to Frankfurt for your flight home.

This European road trip route will afford you the ability to see both big towns and small villages as well as well-known landscapes and hidden gems. The pace is speedy but not too fast and you have just enough time to enjoy each stop before heading on to the next.

How to plan a road trip in the Bavarian Alps

A week-long drive through the mountains of southern Germany takes in a range of architectural wonders.

While not as high or visually dramatic as some other sections of the European range, the Bavarian Alps come with plenty of charm. Cowbells resound across high pastures, wooden huts serve cold beer and turquoise lakes shimmer in the countryside below. There’s also, of course, a famous castle. Schloss Neuschwanstein welcomes huge numbers of visitors every year and fronts many a guidebook — and it has notably just undergone the largest restoration project in its 150-year history. Travelling from west to east, this road trip starts at the landmark before making stops at other impressive structures, notable buildings and feats of engineering across the region.

1. Schloss Neuschwanstein  

Kick things off at one of Germany’s most recognisable locations, the enchanting castle said to have inspired those featured in Disney’s Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. The most extensive makeover to date, including meticulous work on paintings, furniture and a one-tonne chandelier, began in 2017 and is due to be completed this summer. Book onto a guided tour to see the results for yourself, then stroll to nearby Marienbrücke bridge for a view back at the turreted marvel.

2.   The Passion Play Theatre

For a scenic mountain route, drive via Plansee in Austria to reach Oberammergau. The village is adorned with murals known as Lüftlmalerei, including depictions of Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood. But there’s another, different story this place wants to tell. Locals have been putting on a once-a-decade Passion Play, telling the story of the Crucifixion, for almost four centuries — a pledge once made to fend off the plague. The next performance is scheduled for 2030, but you can join a daily tour of the specially built theatre.

3.   Zugspitze Cable Car

Drive south to the island-dotted lake of Eibsee and the Zugspitze cable car. Its construction, which began in 2015 and took two years, was a veritable engineering feat: carrying up to 120 people each, its glass cabins glide smoothly to the 2,962m summit of Germany’s highest mountain in a matter of minutes. Buy a return ticket, allowing plenty of time to take in the panorama: on a clear day, you can see peaks as far as Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

4.   Tegernseer Hütte

Next, head east and get ready for a hike to the Tegernseer Hütte, a mountain hut perched between the peaks of Roßstein and Buchstein. First constructed in 1903, it was rebuilt in 1965 after a lightning strike. The quickest path takes two hours or less from the car park just west of Bayerwald, zig-zagging through forests, meadows and rougher terrain at the end. Alternatively, there’s a gentler three-hour option. Set off early to reach the terrace for lunch or book well in advance for an overnight and time without the crowds.

5.   Wendelstein Cog Railway

Continue along the shores of the Tegernsee and through Bayrischzell until you reach the village of Brannenburg. From here, hop onto one of the yellow carriages that shuttle visitors up and down the Wendelstein mountain. Built between 1910 and 1912, this high-Alpine rack railway was the first of its kind in Germany. Since modernised, it takes you over bridges, through tunnels, under galleries and around rock faces in around 25 minutes.

6.   Eagle’s Nest

Follow the road via Reit im Winkl to the Berchtesgadener Land, where the Kehlsteinhaus (nicknamed the Eagle’s Nest) was built atop a rocky outcrop as a retreat for Nazi leadership in the 1930s. Leave your car in Obersalzberg and take a designated bus up Germany’s highest road; a brass-lined lift inside the hillside will then take you to the site, now maintained as a restaurant. There are guided tours of the area to learn about its turbulent past, then end the trip exploring the wider Berchtesgaden National Park.
