Animal Attractions

The Springfield area offers an array of opportunities to get up close with animals from around the world thanks to attractions that educate while they entertain.

Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium

Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium was voted America’s Best Aquarium and Best New Attraction in “USA Today” reader polls. Featuring an immersive design with more than 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The attraction is home to 1.5 million gallons of saltwater and freshwater aquariums along with the immersive wildlife galleries that bring visitors eye-to-eye with the greatest collection of record-setting game animals ever assembled.

Parent and daughter feeding giraffe at Dickerson Park Zoo

Dickerson Park Zoo is a self-guided walking tour with a wide variety of animal exhibits. The zoo is organized geographically with animals from Asia, South America, Australia, Africa and other parts of the world. The Missouri Habitats area features animals native to the Ozarks, including playful otters, white-tailed deer, wolves and black bears. A reptile house, elephants, special events and more provide hours of fun. There’s even a miniature train ride, a gift shop, playground and cafe.

Wild Animal Safari

Wild Animal Safari includes a small walk-through zoo featuring a petting area, monkeys, a giraffe and other creatures along with a reptile house. The attraction has a ride-through tour where patrons can see - and feed - dozens of animals and learn about them from a well-versed tour guide. Another option is to drive through in your own vehicle but USDA regulations prohibit feeding the animals without a guide present and windows must be rolled up.

National Tiger Sanctuary

At National Tiger Sanctuary , home to several exotic felines, only guided walking tours are allowed with feeding tours and other special tours as options. During the tours, guides provide information about each feline and what brought them to the sanctuary, such as owners that no longer wanted the animals or rescues from situations where the animals’ lives were in danger or they had poor quality of life. Along with tigers, the sanctuary has African lions, mountain lions, leopards and pumas, and don’t be surprised to see domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, on the grounds.

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park

Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park allows kids to explore the rich agricultural heritage of the Ozarks thanks to a red barn that’s home to hoofed livestock, such as miniature horses and donkeys, goats and sheep. A cattle barn houses beef and dairy animals. Fowl and other livestock are also on hand for hands-on experiences. Be sure to check out Irene the Dairy queen, a life-sized fiberglass bovine that allows visitors the opportunity to see what it’s like to milk a cow.

Animal Sanctuary Missouri

The Gentle Barn is one of my favorite places and sanctuaries in the world. I’ve written about the Tennessee location here  and actually have volunteered there when I’m able to. Unfortunately, it’s three hours away from me and my volunteer days have become further and farther between. Regardless, when I am able to go, the Gentle Barn sanctuary is definitely my sanctuary.

When I went to visit my brother for Thanksgiving, I knew it was the perfect time to finally visit The Gentle Barn in Missouri.

About The Gentle Barn

The Gentle Barn was founded in 1999 by Ellie Laks in her backyard in California.  She was always drawn to animals as a child – always rescuing them, turning to them for comfort and nurturing them.  It was only natural that she would one day open an animal sanctuary.  It is now no longer in her backyard and they have a paradise that gives sanctuary to 175 animals.  The Gentle Barn in Knoxville, Tennessee opened in 2015 and the Ditmer, Missouri location opened earlier this year.

The Gentle Barn rescues animals from severe abuse and neglect who are too old, sick, lame, or scared to be adopted into homes.  They are a sanctuary to horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, peacocks, emus, cats and dogs.  The other side of The Gentle Barn is that they help children who come from similar backgrounds – abuse and neglect – and aid them in their road to recovery.

Where is The Gentle Barn Missouri?

Visiting The Gentle Barn Missouri

When you first arrive at The Gentle Barn, you park your car in the front lot and wander up towards the front of the house where you sign in and sign the liability release. Afterwards, you can head on back to the picnic tables. Michelle, the Manager at the Missouri location, will talk once everyone arrives and explain what The Gentle Barn is all about and introduce you to all the animals. Then you’re allowed to explore the property for the next couple hours to meet the animals, take photos, give some of them treats and more.

Just as the Tennessee location opened because of Dudley, the Missouri location also got its start because of cows! Earlier this year, the ‘St Louis Six’ made national headlines due to their story. Chico, the leader, busted himself and his five ‘brothers’ through three separate fences and they ran through the streets of St Louis terrified for their lives but also extremely brave.

I had followed their journey from escape to vet clinic to foster to their forever home and it was so exciting to meet these handsome five boys in person. They have come so far and are so close to letting the public come into their pasture with them. For now, I settled on feeding them cookies which they happily took. Their names are Johnny Cash (all black), Eddie (black + white), Chico (the larger red), Roo (smaller red) and Houdini (red + white) and Spirit (all black; no longer with us).

When we visited, it was the first day that Baron von Goat was allowed out of stall rest so he was super excited to be out in the world but also very distracted by his new found freedom. Regardless, it was so fun to meet him and see how happy he was. I love goats so much. Literally days after we visited, they rescued a female goat named Hazel so I can’t wait to see her.

The Chickens

Daisy and Blossom were rescued together from slaughter and are a prime example of what is wrong with the chicken industry. They are so young but can hardly walk or stand due to their unnatural body weight.

animal sanctuary missouri

Diamon, Georgia, Gertrude and Perfect were all taken in as they were no longer wanted due to being too old to lay eggs anymore. They had become “useless” and thus would be sent to slaughter had GB not stepped in and rescued these gorgeous ladies.

The Turkeys

Aside from the cows, I was really excited about seeing Peyton Manning. Peyton actually had spent most of his life at the Tennessee location. Due to him and his brother reaching their sexual maturity though, they had begun to fight and needed to be separated. Once the Missouri location was opened, it was decided that in order for him to have a full and happy life he needed to have a flock and space of his own. So, now Peyton is the turkey of the house in Missouri and watches over Betty and the chickens.

animal sanctuary missouri

Betty Morgan is the baby and all-white turkey. Betty was purchased by an 8-year-old girl from a turkey farm but her parents wouldn’t allow her to keep her as a pet so the little girl asked one of the volunteers to take her. She did and then eventually Betty has come to find the Gentle Barn as her forever home. Isn’t she gorgeous?!

animal sanctuary missouri

When we visited, they had two pigs but saved a third just a few days afterward. We got the excitement of meeting Petunia and Rose and one day soon, I’ll go meet the new pig – Penny.

Petunia let us come in and rub her belly, brush her and take some photos with her. She was so sweet and reminded me a lot of Lillie and Dream in Tennessee. Petunia was found roaming on the side of the road in Tennessee and someone was kind enough to take her in. They soon realized they couldn’t raise her as their own due to her size and through Esther’s Army, Petunia found her way to Missouri.

animal sanctuary missouri

Rose isn’t quite ready for close-ups with strangers as she was never really taught boundaries when she was younger. She’s incredibly sweet though. Rose was raised on a pig farm for slaughter but during a flood, was washed away and luckily found by a nearby family. When she became too big to handle, they knew something had to be done or she would have to be sent to slaughter. Thanks to Esther’s Army, she also found her way to Missouri.

Penny fell off a transport truck when she was a tiny baby and was picked up by a kind soul, taken care of and eventually made her way to the Gentle Barn.

It was so much fun visiting The Gentle Barn in Missouri and meet all the animals I had been following for months as well as some new ones. I would highly suggest adding this to your St Louis itinerary. It is so much fun for the entire family!

It looks like a wonderful farm experience, but farm animals scare me a little. I think I’d choose to admire them from behind the fence.

We used to volunteer for Lions, Tigers, and Bears in Alpine California. Jenn was a tour guide and I came in occasionally for landscaping work. Jenn used to make the hour commute up to Alpine weekly and it was an important part of her spiritual grounding. Life (re: Blogging) ended up getting in the way. The trips went to once a month and then only on special occasions. We miss the connection with all of the animals and Jenn can still tell you their backstory. Everyone who came to the sanctuary had their own backstory like Meatball the Bear, who kept coming into suburban Glendale to raid freezers (especially Costco Meatballs) and the Grizzly Bears who lived in a pit in North Carolina. Until they came to the sanctuary, their feet never touched ground. Their entire life was in a concrete pit. Places like this are so important to see and preserve the sanctity of animal life.

Sanctuary to 175 animals? Wow! It is amazing what they’re doing to help abused and neglected animals. I can see why it is your sanctuary!

I particularly like the story about the St. Louis Six. I’m glad Chico’s mad dash for freedom ended with a home at the Gentle Barn!

' src=

The name makes it sound like my kind of place! So cute that they take the time to care for farm animals. I just got back from an elephant sanctuary in Thailand!

Faith in humanity is restored! Honestly, posts like this (and people like the ones who found that sweet not-so-little piggie on the side of the road and decided to care for her until she found a permanent home) make me feel like there are still decent people in the world! To be a rescuer or to set up an organization like this, it’s so admirable. Thanks for sharing your story about visiting the Gentle Barn. I’d love to visit an animal sanctuary one day!

The largest mammal that still survives in North America, the American bison today lives in wild and semi-wild herds on private ranges and on public lands. Bison have a dark brown, shaggy coat. The head and front portion of the animal are massive. Both sexes have short, upcurved horns. Juveniles are lighter in color.

Height: 6 feet; length: 10 feet; weight: 800–2,000 pounds.

image of American Bison Distribution Map

Small herds of bison can be seen, for example, at Prairie State Park (Barton County) and at The Nature Conservancy's Dunn Ranch Prairie (Harrison County). Others live on private ranches.

Habitat and Conservation

Before European settlement, the American bison was a spectacular species of the open Great Plains, moving in vast herds north in the spring and south in the fall. Apparently, by the time immediately before European settlement, bison occurred sporadically in Missouri and were never abundant here. By 1840 only remnants of these magnificent herds were found in the northwestern and southeastern parts of the state, and these soon disappeared. Overhunting by white settlers was the central reason for the bison’s extirpation. In addition, introduced cattle competed for prairie grass, and plowing and fire suppression destroyed the bison’s prairie habitat.

Bison are ruminants; their digestive systems are like those of cattle. They are grazers of grasslands, eating grasses, sedges, and other plants. Because their herds can completely graze an area quickly, they migrate constantly to ungrazed areas.

Extirpated from Missouri, but reintroduced wild and semi-wild herds now live on public and private lands. Across their former territory, bison live on private ranches, national parks, and state and federal lands.

Bison herds each have a distinct social hierarchy, with both males and females competing for status. Males acquire harems of females and chase away rival males. Mating occurs in late summer, and one calf is born the following spring. Calves nurse for a year, becoming mature at age 3. At this time, males leave their mothers and live alone or join a bachelor herd. Upon breeding season, herds of males and females approach each other again.

Human Connections

Bison today are raised in captivity by some individuals, who market their meat.

For Native Americans, the bison provided food, shelter, clothing, and utensils, and on the treeless prairie the dried “buffalo chips” served as fuel.

White settlers overhunted bison for meat, hides, and sport, and to deprive Native Americans of their important source for sustenance, forcing them to abandon their traditional homelands.

Today, the remnants of the once-spectacular herds inspire us to take better care of the environment.

Ecosystem Connections

It’s hard to imagine the vast expanse of native grassland that once spread across America, or the bison that were its primary herbivore. Their thundering herds left an enduring mark on the landscape. In some places, their historic wallows are still visible.

The American bison once ranged through the Great Plains and tallgrass prairies in enormous herds. These animals could quickly and completely graze a given area, but because the presettlement grasslands covered so much territory, the bison could migrate constantly to ungrazed areas. Their occasional, random trampling and stripping of vegetation from lands was one of the natural disturbances, like fire, that maintained the prairie ecosystem, preventing trees from getting established.

In prehistoric times, bison were an important food for large predators such as saber-toothed cats.

Taum Sauk Mountain State Park is located very close to Elephant Rocks. In fact, I would suggest camping around Fredericktown or Ironton and exploring Taum Sauk Mountain , Elephant Rocks State Park , and Johnson Shut-ins all in the same trip.

Taum Sauk Mountain is the highest point in Missouri. Climb the 72-foot Taum Sauk Lookout Tower to get an epic view. Hike one of the trails, and visit Mina Sauk Falls – the highest wet-weather waterfall in Missouri.

As you can see, it’s an especially beautiful view at Taum Sauk in the fall! See what else you should check out in Missouri this fall !

Take the 2-mile “Trail Through Time” to a double natural arch at Pickle Springs Natural Area, located near Farmington, MO.

The trail also passes by waterfalls, canyons, and shelter bluffs. The one-way loop is considered moderately challenging, but we did it with a 2-year-old (not in a carrier) and it went just fine!

Cave Spring is located on Current River, near Eminence, MO. Rent a canoe, or bring your kayaks, and float down the river and through a cave! This has been on my to-do list for a few years, and is going to happen this summer!

You can also take a short trail to a staircase leading down into a sinkhole, called Devil’s Well.

Hawn State Park, near St. Genevieve, Missouri, offers trails along sandstone canyons and cliffs. Come walk among the pines, have a picnic, and set up your tent at the campground for a night or two!

Start at The Landing in Van Buren, Missouri and spend the day just floating down the Current River. The Landing offers several types of tubes, from a basic black innertube, to a tube with a mesh bottom (perfect for the kids), to cooler tubes (so your drinks and snacks can float alongside you), to tubes with backrests and cupholders.

You can also choose to rent a raft, canoe, or kayak. Choose between a 3-hour float, 6-hour float, or if you’re feeling extra adventurous – an overnight float.

When you get off the river, stop at Jolly Cone for ice cream, sandwiches, burgers, and more. It’s basically required.

The Visit MO website brags that National Geographic calls the Bonne Terre Mine, “One of America’s Top 10 Greatest Adventures.”

The mine was the largest producer of lead ore until it closed in 1962. Now, you can take a walking tour or even a boat tour on the crystal-clear water to see the abandoned shafts and equipment.

If you are into scuba diving, the mine is the largest freshwater scuba diving venue in the world. Reservations are required to dive.

Silver Mines Recreation Area is located along the St. Francis River. This river is the only one in Missouri classified as “white water.” The starting point is upriver at the Millstream Gardens Conservation Area.

Aside from that, you can wade in the river, camp, fish, hike, and picnic.

Come to Lake Wappapello State Park to camp, hike, swim, fish, and enjoy nature.

There is a roped-off swimming area at the Alison Cove day-use area.

This state park is located in East Prarie, Missouri. See Missouri as the first explorers saw it. Take the elevated Boardwalk Trail through the bottomland forest.

Two of the trees in this state park qualify as state champions for their size. Take the 1.5-mile Bottomland Trail to pass by some of Missouri’s tallest trees.

You can also fish, camp, and play at the playground. During fall, there is an annual Living History Day with old-time crafts and homemade goods, as well as music and concessions.

Packing List When Visiting Epic Places in Missouri

A  concealed travel pouch  may be one of the most important items you bring along when searching for the best places to visit in Missouri.

It is always important to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This  unisex RFID blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with the RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves are  the perfect solution.

This configuration comes with enough credit card sleeves that the entire family would be protected. They are slim too, so they will easily fit into your pouch or wallet.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

It can be used on a variety of phones, not just an iPhone like I have. And wow is it fast!

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking selfies when visiting Wisconsin attractions.

Hydration is so important when traveling. You want to remain hydrated throughout your travels to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for hiking and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car.

Then this  set of collapsible silicone foldable water bottles  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. then this   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

There are so many unique and interesting places to visit in Missouri for everyone! History, culture, nature, adventure! This Midwest state has it all! Get ready to plan your epic Missouri vacation!

Where to See the Solar Eclipse: The 13 Best Cities to Watch the Event

By Katherine McLaughlin

totality during a total solar eclipse

If you’re a fan of astronomy or otherwise interested in unique natural phenomenons, you may be wondering where to see the solar eclipse—after all, the big event is just one week away. On April 8, a number of cities throughout Mexico , the United States, and Canada will experience brief moments of dawn- or dusk-like darkness right in the middle of the day. Officially described as a total solar eclipse, the occurrence happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and blocks the entirety of sun’s face.

Because it’s not something that happens everyday, the marvel is prompting locals and travelers alike to scope out the best viewing locations—and cities with the best front-row seats are eager to create an unforgettable day through cultural programming and other events to commemorate the special event. What’s more, there won’t be another total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, according to NASA , making it all the more important to catch this one. Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the upcoming event, including the 13 best cities to see the eclipse.

What is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

A total solar eclipse is seen on a partly cloudy day.

Total solar eclipse safety guidelines

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

Frequency of total solar eclipses

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

Duration of this year’s total solar eclipse

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

Solar eclipse maps

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Map of the united states showing the path of the total solar eclipse

The 2024 solar eclipse map from NASA shows where totality will occur on April 8.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where to see the solar eclipse

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for four minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreon Mexico

Torreón, Mexico.

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for four minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Hills and plants in Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country.

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Park in Arkansas

Russellville, Arkansas.

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience four minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Street in Cape Girardeau Missouri

Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale Illinois

Carbondale, Illinois.

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience four minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Indiana University

Bloomington, Indiana.

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m. Indianapolis, the state’s capital, is another good city to watch the eclipse, but totality will last for less time, about three minutes and 47 seconds.

Cleveland Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m, which will last for just under four minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie Pennsylvania

Erie, Pennsylvania.

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for three minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

downtown Buffalo New York

Buffalo, New York.

Buffalo, New York, will see three minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Region, Ontario.

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for three minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Downtown street in Burlington Vermont

Burlington, Vermont.

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience three minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton Maine

Houlton, Maine.

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for three minutes and 20 seconds.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Willow the 15-pound therapy bunny takes the place of the Easter Bunny on Sunday

A giant bunny in Missouri acts as a therapy animal.

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) – While many children were on the lookout for the Easter Bunny over the weekend, one bunny in Missouri was very easy to spot.

Willow is a 15-pound Flemish giant bunny from Joplin.

Her owner said the bunny serves as a therapy animal, helping people at nursing homes, hospitals and schools. The giant bunny is also a stand-in for the evasive Easter Bunny.

Willow has a Facebook page called The Adventures of Willow Bunny with posts written from her perspective.

She also has a favorite treat, but it isn’t carrots. Willow actually prefers bananas.
