Description
The beautiful county of Norfolk is characterised by charming seaside towns, unspoilt coastline and unique scenery, making it a perfect holiday destination. On this relaxing break we experience the striking landscape of the Norfolk Broads, consisting of shallow lakes and rivers, scattered with pretty market towns and villages along its shores. We discover the mystic beauty of its waterways by paddle steamer as well as enjoy nostalgic journeys on Norfolk’s heritage railways through picturesque countryside, taking us back to a bygone era.
Coach Itinerary
Included Excursions
Cromer, Sheringham & the North Norfolk Railway (full day)
We head first to Cromer and Sheringham. Cromer is a classic resort on the north Norfolk coast famous for its tasty crabs and boasting wide open beaches and a traditional pier. Originally a small north Norfolk fishing village, Sheringham is now a popular seaside town with a sandy beach, seafront promenade and a diverse range of shops.
In the afternoon we board our train on the heritage North Norfolk Railway (also known as the Poppy Line) for a spectacularly scenic journey from Sheringham to Holt, passing through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Bure Valley Railway & Mississippi Paddle Steamer Cruise (full day)
We experience a nostalgic trip on the heritage Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge railway, from Aylsham to Wroxham, meandering through the pretty Bure Valley countryside. After free time in Wroxham we travel by coach to the picturesque village of Horning. Here we embark on a memorable cruise along the Norfolk Broads on the Mississippi Paddle Steamer, passing lovely thatched cottages, windmills, ancient churches and reed beds while spotting some of the area’s unique wildlife along the way.

Little trains of Norfolk
Norfolk has four heritage railways and you can visit them all on this four-night escorted tour, which has a string of new dates throughout the summer to meet demand. In addition to travel on the Bure Valley Railway, the Bittern Line, the Poppy Line and the Mid-Norfolk Railway, you will take a cruise aboard a paddleboat on the Norfolk Broads and visit the Queen’s Sandringham estate. The tour costs from £399pp including three nights’ half-board and all excursions ( arenarailholidays.co.uk ).
New hotel in Amsterdam If you’re inspired by the direct Eurostar services to the Dutch capital from April 4, try the new Apollo Hotel Amsterdam for a city break. It has 223 rooms that combine waterfront views with eclectic design, fusing styles from the 1920s and 1970s and adding a contemporary twist. Rooms cost from €181 (£160) a night ( starwoodhotels.com ). Eurostar tickets cost from £35 one way ( eurostar.com ).
Take a National Geographic holiday Want an expert-led tour, a small-ship cruise or to stay in a luxury lodge? National Geographic is now offering its expedition holidays to UK travellers. For instance, a small group trip round Iceland will explore the country’s highlights, from lava-tube caves, glaciers and volcanoes to the area where two continental plates brush up against each other. Seven days costs from £1,996pp B&B with some other meals, but not flights to Reykjavik. The company also features eco lodges from £55 a night ( nationalgeographicexpeditions.co.uk ).
Shepherd’s hut in a sculpture park Combine a visit to a 26-acre sculpture park in Dorset with an exclusive picnic in a cute shepherd’s hut, or in a pavilion. Sculpture by the Lakes ( sculpturebythelakes.co.uk ) has four places that can be hired by the day for £50 each (plus £10pp park entry); each seats up to eight people and has a cosy wood-burner. The park comprises lakes, the River Frome, landscaped gardens and 30 sculptures designed by Simon Gudgeon and his wife, Monique. There’s also a café on site.

Visit Norfolk and Sandringham with Lucy Worsley
What we love: A royal experience to remember, discover the country residence of Queen Elizabeth II and hear exclusively from historian Lucy Worsley about the Sandringham estate and the monarchy.
Famous for its wide skies, glorious coastline, serene rivers and crimson-red poppy fields, Norfolk is the perfect place to stop and enjoy the view. It's somewhere life moves at a slower pace: even the Royal Family come here to unwind. Add in the nostalgic pleasure of travelling along heritage railways and you have all ingredients of an unforgettable trip. There are no fewer than three different railway journeys and a cruise on a paddle steamer included on this wonderful short break, with ample time to explore delightful Norfolk destinations such as Wroxham, Horning and Cromer.
However, what turns this five-day tour from special to extraordinary is the chance to meet and hear from the brilliant historian Lucy Worsley. Fascinating, incisive and always entertaining, Lucy will give an exclusive talk to readers about 'Sandringham and the Modern Monarchy', before joining you on a visit to the Royal Family's famous country retreat.

This morning we board our coach and travel to the market town of Aylsham to join the Bure Valley Railway. This delightful route takes in some of the most unspoilt countryside as it crosses 17 bridges and passes through idyllic villages to reach Wroxham, known as the 'capital of the Norfolk Broads'. You have some free time here before we travel to the pretty village of Horning and board the Southern Comfort Mississippi Paddle Boat for a cruise on the Broads. The route takes us along the Bure river, passing thatched cottages, windmills and Norfolk reed beds, with an excellent commentary which also points out the water birds.
2023 departures: Today we are taken to Norwich station where we join the Bittern Line, named after the wading bird, for a journey to Sheringham. We then join the North Norfolk Railway, affectionately known as the Poppy Line, and enjoy a scenic trip along the coast and through heathland to the lovely town of Holt. After some free time here we head to the nearby seaside resort of Cromer and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

The itinerary wasn't exactly what we were expecting. The 'cruise' on Lake Thun turned out to be a ferry and we had to stand for 2 hours. The 'boat trip' on Lake Lucerne also turned out to be a ferry. The itinerary stated a glass of Champagne at midnight. Firstly they tried to charge us for it and then we found out it was only Prosecco. The Tour Manager was nowhere to be found to sort it out. The Tour Manager was totally disinterested in the group and most of the time we had to find things out for ourselves. Would I travel with Arena again - NO WAY.
We enjoyed many aspects of the "Little Trains of Norfolk" short break holiday provided by Arena Rail Holidays which is a coach and rail tour with a short boat trip on the Broads as well. The Tour Manager John Fitzpatrick was exceptional. Good knowledge and information about all the places we visited; very caring looking after the older and more needy travellers with a good entertaining style and dry sense of humour. The main low point was very very poor evening meals at the Holiday Inn, Ipswich Road, Norwich where the drinks are also unreasonably expensive for this standard of hotel. There are a number of poor reviews on Trip Adviser and elsewhere of the hotel's food etc by others who have been on this tour. We mainly travel independently and whilst there are many advantages to an organised tour (someone else is responsible for all the arrangements, coordinating the travel, does the driving etc) we would hesitate to go on another similar holiday, at least for a while. Nearly all the people on the tour were pleasant, polite and interesting but we all have annoying habits, idiosyncrasies, different ideas of good behaviour and manners added to which as people get older or excessively overweight they understandably are often less physically able which seriously impacted the time taken to get on and off the coach and the pace of people's walking (it was quite sad to see people dropping out or lagging way behind the walking tour of Sandringham or struggling out of breath in trying to keep up). The pace was set by the Sandringham guide in line with the time allocated for our tour and all John Fitzpatrick could do was hang back and care for those left behind.

The distance between Williamsburg and Norfolk is approximately 37 miles, or 60 kilometers.
