What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

Citizens of the European Economic Area, the United States, Canada, Israel, and many other countries do not need a visa for a stay in Austria of up to three months.

Hunting permits

Outfitters will assist clients in obtaining their hunting permits. Generally a visiting hunter will need to produce a valid hunting license from their country of nationality in order to get a permit to hunt in Austria.

Prohibited equipment

  • automatic or semiautomatic rifles
  • shotguns capable of holding more than two cartridges
  • bow hunting equipment
  • any electronic optical aiming equipment on the gun, such as night vision or thermal imaging scopes

Upon arrival

Required documents.

  • Identity card or passport
  • Hunting license from your home country
  • Euro-firearm certificate (if traveling with your own firearms; see below for specifics)

Gun import for EU citizens

Hunters may enter and leave Austria with firearms that are intended for private use if they carry a European Firearms Pass, if the firearms are registered on this Firearms Pass, and as long as they can justify the objective of their journey (hunting invitation, shooting competition). Ammunition for the personal firearms may also be carried.

Gun import for non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens need to obtain a permit from the Austrian consulate or other representing authority in their country to import and carry firearms of category C & D (shotgun and rifle) as well as the equivalent ammunition.

Ethical hunting

Hunting is deeply rooted in Austrian society and hunters are regarded as role models because of their ethical values and understanding of and identification with nature. Children who grow up hunting learn from an early age its necessity for conservation and they acquire respect for wildlife and learn the importance of fair chase.

Showing reverence to wild game is important. Hunters respect and honor the game taken with the "last bite", and they also honor the hunter with the hunter’s "break". You will hear terms such as “Weidmannssprache;” “Weidmann” means “the hunter.” Many already know the famous “Weidmannsheil,” which is used as a greeting and an acknowledgment of a successful hunt.

Useful tips

Most hunting is conducted as a combination of walking and sitting at strategic places or as a traditional spot and stalk. Good optics are extremely valuable, especially when hunting in the mountains. A waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes are recommended.

After the hunt

Game management show.

All trophy animals, that is, game with antlers and horns, must be presented at the annual game management show (Trophäenschau). Shipment of trophies can only take place after trophy has been presented. Game management shows take place from January till April.

Trophy fees

Red deer stag.

The weight of the skull (without the bottom jaw) and antlers will be calculated 24 hours after the skull has been boiled. Grandels (ivories) are considered part of the trophy and incur no additional charge.

Roe deer buck

Trophy fee is based on its weight with small skull measured at the official trophy evaluation, 24 hours after boiling and cleaning. Upon request, the trophy can be weighed with full skull. In this case the the weight will be corrected by the trophy jury.

Mouflon ram

The outside curve of the longest horn will be measured and the fee charged accordingly.

Fallow deer stag

The trophy fee is based on its weight with skull (without bottom jaw), measured at the official trophy evaluation, 24 hours after boiling and cleaning.

The outside curve of the longest bottom tusk will be measured and the fee charged accordingly.

Documentation

The outfitter is responsible for obtaining an official EU veterinary certificate for the trophy. At the same time, the outfitter should obtain any other necessary local documents as well. The outfitter is not responsible for obtaining any trophy import certificates that may be required for non-EU countries.

“With so many hunts out there in the world, you can’t know them all, but Bob Kern does. I have hunted and fished on 6 continents over the past 20 years through the Hunting Consortium and have enjoyed every trip. He has never sent me to a bad one. I can’t say the same for the trips that I have arranged myself. I run a large company, with little time for the details that Bob’s experienced staff handles smoothly and completely. I go about my busy schedule until it’s time to get on the airplane and then do so confident that the upcoming adventure is planned with military precision and a thorough knowledge of the game and hunting area. The more experienced I become at worldwide hunting, the more certain I am to book every hunt through the Hunting Consortium.” -Paul Dickson

austria hunting trip

Located in the very heart of Europe, between Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, amidst breathtaking mountain scenery, and possessed of outstanding sightseeing opportunities, Austria is one of the most popular destinations for hunters traveling to Europe. A bit larger than the state of West Virginia, Austria is 75% mountainous, with vast evergreen forests, picturesque valleys, and Alpine meadows. It boasts a rich hunting culture and history, dating back 1,000 years.

Once part of Bavaria, Austria has figured prominently into European history. The Hapsburg Dynasty created the Austro-Hungarian Empire which dominated central Europe in the 19th century. The capital, Vienna, became one of the great world centers for art, music, and western culture. Once home to Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, and many other famous musicians and artists, today Vienna still possesses much of the charm of earlier times and is one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in Europe. So too is Salzburg in western Austria, lying at the foot of the Alps.

For hunters Austria provides one of the best examples of European hunting culture with the practice of customs which have evolved over one thousand years. These include a unique form of hunters’ language – the “Jägersprache” – and rituals of respect for the game and the hunter, which are still widely observed by local hunters and guides.

All of the common species of big game found in Europe are found in Austria. Austria’s wildlife management system is among the best in the world and game herds are managed not only for quantity, but also for trophy quality. Many of the techniques now widely used in the United States for deer management have been imported from Austria and Germany, where they have been practiced for some three hundred years. Superb trophy quality and healthy, well-balanced game populations are the results of this scientific and intensive wildlife management. In Europe there are very few truly wild spaces left. In Austria we rely exclusively on huge private estates (15,000 to 25,000 acres) where game has been carefully and skillfully managed for generations. All of the commonly hunted continental species are available and superb quality can be had. All of the estates we use are large in size and most are mountainous, with dense forests. All present a challenging fair chase environment for both wildlife and hunter. Prices vary slightly from estate to estate. In Austria, as in most other European countries, game is priced by quality. Highly skilled and experienced guides are trained to find the quality level desired by each customer.

Austria is well known as a world hunting destination with a lot of hunting opportunities. Picturesque landscapes, high-end service, professional organization and warm hospitality attract hunters from all over the world.

How to get there:

There are many ways to get to Vienna (capital of Austria) by different airlines. You will be met and assisted through the customs at the airport by our representatives who will take care of all the paperwork and formalities. We also recommend to our hunters to rent guns of very good quality available in the areas to avoid traveling with the own rifles. Then we will arrange the car transfer to the hunting area due to the species you hunt. The hunting areas are located from 2,5 to 4 hours driving from Vienna with high quality highways.

Hunting season:

August to December.

Species to hunt:

Alpine Ibex, Alpine Chamois, Mouflon, Red stag, Roe deer, Fallow deer, Wild Boars. It is possible to combine several species in one trip.

This is a spot-and-stalk hunt. The hunt on Ibex and Chamois means some walking. Not much climbing involved, physically not difficult. You should expect the altitude of 3200-6500 ft.

Accommodation:

4* hotels close to the hunting areas. Ones are nice and comfortable, with traditional cuisine restaurants at your service.

It is nice and warm weather from the beginning of the season till the end of October. Occasional rains start at the end of October and it is snow in the mid of November in the mountains. In December the mountains are covered with a snow.

Austria is a great hunting destination with hundreds years of experience in the field.

European Hunting Trips

Outfitters and lodges in austria with affordable hunting packages for chamois, ibex, red deer, roe deer and capercaillie hunting trips.

Austria is known as one of the top hunting destinations on the globe, with a special hunting tradition stretching back centuries. With strict game management and hunting still on private lands, record trophies are taken every year at the country’s top estates. Hunting was once the sole privilege of kings and nobles. Until the Austrian revolution in 1848, big game hunting in the mountains and glens of the Alps where mighty stags, great horned alpine ibex and chamois roamed was the exclusive privilege of aristocrats. The great castles and palaces of Europe are still often filled with the trophies bagged by royalty. The Emperor Franz Joseph and his nephew the Archduke Franz Ferdinand were passionate hunters themselves.

Path of Hunt Outfitting represents tradition, high quality trophies and nothing but the best service. Each and every hunt is perfectly tailored to the needs and requests of our clients. No hunt is ever the same as we customize every hunting adventure to our client’s personal requirements. Whether we hunt in Europe or Africa, our quality level remains the same. Premium hunting guns & rifles from Austria

Hunting in the heart of Europe

Definitely worth a trip

The Alps stretch almost through the entire country, end in the foothills of the Alps and shape the cultural landscape with alpine pastures and cultivated forests. Hunting is a big part of this cultural landscape and has a deep-rooted tradition that has been passed down through many generations.

Sustainable hunting is a priority

The Austrian hunter community relies on sustainability to maintain a good game population. Therefore, the diversity of species and the density of game in the green heart of Europe is correspondingly impressive.

Different game species depending on the federal state

In the north-eastern federal states you have the opportunity to hunt small game such as hare and pheasant as well as hoofed game such as red deer, roe deer, wild boar and mouflon. In the mountains on the other hand, chamois, ibex and marmots can be found. The challenging hunt for capercaillie and black grouse, as well as for the cunning fox is particularly interesting.

Chamois hunting in the Alps

The hunt of a climbing pro: For hunting chamois, the hunter has to aim high because the chamois can only be found at altitudes of 2.000 to 3.000 meters.

Exciting: Summer or winter hunting? The chamois is released for hunting in Salzburg from July 16th to December 15th and in Carinthia from August 1st to December 31st . In summer the chamois can be found in high mountains and the coat is short and yellowish. Due to a lack of food and the snow, the chamois moves to the upper forest in winter. Their fur is thick and brown/white. No matter when you hunt, there is a very good chance of success!

Female Hunters in Austria

The number of active female hunter is increasing annually. We welcome this development and the positive coverage of it in the media.

Women very quickly develop a unique passion for the game and nature that often differs from men during the hunt.

Hunting tradition in Austria

Hunting in Austria has a centuries old tradition that is still in practice in it’s original form:

Hunters in Austria have their own language. They use it always in hunter circles. Especially they say “Waidmannsheil” for welcoming, leaving and even if they have successfully hunted game.

Hunting clothes are in muted colors like dark green, brown and ocher. Quiet yet functional material is worn, both in the hunts as well as when the hunters come together. This of course includes the traditional hunting hat.

The most important thing is the reverence for the shot wild game. We respect and honor the game with the “last bite” and the shooter with the shooter “break” . We also honor the game by sounding the hunting horn and singing songs to the game and to other hunters.

Even the use of dogs for the tracking is very common.

HUNTING IN AUSTRIA

Hunters whose coming to the Austrian Alps usually have two objects of hunting interest. These are chamois and marmot. The best dates to trip for chamois are August (the beginning of the hunting season) and October / November  (rut time season). Hunting for marmots is most effective in August, when these rodents come out of their burrows with their whole families and bask in the sun. Hunting for deer and stags during the alpine rut is also very spectacular.

OUR EXPEDITIONS

Karmel Mayerling – The hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf

Carmel st. joseph: carmelite convent in the neo-classicist style.

Until 1889,  Schloss Mayerling was a hunting lodge in Mayerling, Lower Austria. Located to the south-west of Vienna, today it accommodates the Discalced Carmelites of Carmel St. Joseph. The first documented naming of the lodge can be dated back to 1136. Around the year 1200, the property was given to Heiligenkreuz Abbey and has been its possession for almost 700 years.

In the 19 th century, the residence of the lodge consisted of a separate servant’s wing and the Elizabeth wing. In 1887, the grounds were acquired by Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf Mayerling. Subsequently, the complex was modernised and converted into a hunting lodge.

After the Crown Prince passed away, the land was acquired by Emperor Franz Josef in 1889 and transformed into a convent for the Discalced Carmelites.

Crown Prince Rudoph – the tragedy

Crown Prince Rudolph died in the place where the lodge and thus the Karmel Mayerling stands today. He met his death there along with Mary Vetsera, who was 17 at the time. Today, it still remains unclear what led to this tragedy. Visitors can immerse themselves into the time period through display boards and interesting tours

Tip: The furniture from Schloss Mayerling can also be seen at the  Imperial Furniture Collection , among it the bed where Crown Prince Rudolf and his beloved Mary Vetsera were found dead.

Guided tours

Holy Mass is held from Monday to Saturday at 6:45 a.m. On Sundays and holidays, Mass begins at 7:00 p.m.

From November to March, the convent is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Tuesdays and Fridays, it opens its doors from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During the months between April and October, it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Group tours are possible at a separate time if booked and arranged in advance.

In addition to the neo-classicist style elements and the religious sights, visitors are, of course, enthralled by the tragedy surrounding Crown Prince Rudolf and his beloved.
