BALER ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

BALER ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Every traveler goes through a series of awakenings. The first is usually the moment when it dawns on them that they are born to wander.

Mine happened in Baler. I was a high school sophomore, attending a Boy Scout Regional Jamboree held in Aurora, which was part of Region IV-A at the time. I spent over 16 hours in a packed chartered jeepney from Batangas to Baler, my long-distance travel debut. With eyes wide open and heart full of awe, I saw Aurora as a wonderland. Our camp was set up in a clearing by the stream, in between a lush forest and an ivory coast. Over a few days, we saw our first waterfall, and enjoyed fine beaches and mountaineering trails. I was never the same again.

It’s because of this that I did not want to return to Aurora — it’s the fear of shattering a perfect image I painted in my head when I was a kid. I was afraid that, like most good things in life, Baler too has changed and it would not be the same place that I carefully guarded in my juvenile recollections. I was 13 years old then. I’m 31 now. It’s been 18 long years.

But the time to return has come.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Baler

It all started when, all of a sudden, we felt a strong desire to learn how to surf. It’s something that we had never tried before, even though we had been to a number of surfing havens around the world. Pagudpud is too far. La Union, we had just visited a few months before. Scanning the map for somewhere close, Baler was naturally brought up. For the past several years, Baler has been synonymous with surfing.

A lot has changed since my visit as a kid. First, travel time is much shorter and comfortable. From Manila, Baler can now be reached after only a 5-6-hour drive on generally paved roads. The province has also been moved from the jurisdiction of Region IV-A (Southern Tagalog) to Region III (Central Luzon).

baler trip blog

It’s a small town whose recorded history can be traced back to 1609 when it was founded by Franciscan missionaries. When we were talking to locals, we noticed that they put Ermita Hill in such high regard. Our surfing instructor pointed to it proudly a few times during the session. The caretaker of the hotel where we were staying encouraged us to see it too. It wasn’t until we were there that we finally understood the significance of the place. In 1735, a tsunami ravaged the town and killed thousands. Only six families, who were able to run to the top of Ermita Hill, survived. Our guide shared that most of the population can trace their roots to any of the six families.

Today, although Baler is much more connected to the rest of the world, it remains a small town. It is the capital of Aurora but it is not a city, so don’t expect the capricious comforts or whims you’re used to in the metro. Life here is still simple and pretty laid-back.

  • Language : Tagalog mostly. But there are a few Ilocano speakers. English is widely understood.
  • Currency : Philippine peso (PhP). PhP100 = USD2, EUR 1.65, KRW 22000, JPY218
  • Mode of payment : Cash. There are a few ATMs in town so it would be best to have cash before your visit.

How to Get to Baler from Manila

The easiest way to reach Baler is by bus. There are direct buses available from Cubao in Quezon City. You have two options:

baler trip blog

  • GENESIS BUS . The cheap option. Your typical air-conditioned bus that makes a few stops throughout the trip. Travel time: 6-7 hours. Fare: P550.
  • JOYBUS . The comfortable option. A non-stop bus service with more comfortable seats, much bigger legroom, blankets, pillows, and even snacks. Travel time: 5-6 hours. Fare: P750.

But there’s an even cheaper option. You can travel to Cabanatuan by bus (Another option is to travel to Cabanatuan by bus (P185) and then by van to Baler (P220).

Where to Stay in Baler

First things first: If you’re visiting on a weekend or holiday (especially in summer), you might want to book way in advance. Baler is small and rooms can sell out easily on peak dates.

The two properties below are the highest-rated on Agoda.

Budget Option: Blue Coco Baler Beach House

Blue Coco Baler Beach House, a beachfront property, has air-conditioned rooms that are good for 2pax for only P1700 per night. That’s only P850 per person.

CHECK RATES & AVAILABILITY

Splurge Option: Costa Pacifica

If you have more moolah (money), Costa Pacifica is a great choice. It boasts excellent amenities like free wifi and a pool facing the beach. Room for 2 is at around P6350 per night.

How to get around baler.

If you have your own car, it will be very easy to explore Baler. The roads are mostly paved, and tourist attractions are not that far apart. If you want, you can just hire a guide to give you directions and more local insights about each stop. Guide fee: P500.

Otherwise, you have four options.

  • By van . P2500 per day. Good for up to 10 pax.
  • By tricycle . Full day tour, P800 per day. Half-day tour, P300. Up to 3 pax.
  • By bicycle . Mountain bike rental, P300 per day or P35 per hour.
  • By motorcycle . Cheapest motorbike rental we found, P800 per day. Not sure if there are lower options.

Van and tricycle tours will stop at the following:

  • Ditumabo Falls

Diguisit Falls

  • Aniao Rock Formations
  • 600-yo Balete Tree
  • PAGASA Viewpoint (van, motorcycle)

Note that these rates don’t include entrance and parking fees, which we will indicate in the “Places to Visit” section below.

For short distances, you may travel by tricycle for only P10-P20 per person, depending on the distance.

Places to Visit in Baler

With the exception of Ampere Beach, all these can be visited by taking a tricycle or van tour. If your hotel is close to Sabang Beach, you can skip this and just enjoy the beach another day since it’s near anyway.

If you’re on a tricycle tour, you will need to transfer to habal-habal to get to Dicasalarin Cove or PAGASA Viewpoint because the road is too steep for trikes. Make sure you make prior arrangements.

Sabang Beach

Sabang Beach, the most accessible swimming and surfing spot in Baler. The water here is shallow but the swell strong, which makes it an ideal place to learn to surf. Here are the rates: Surfboard rental + instructor fee: P350 per hour Surfboard rental only: P200 per hour or P800 per day

You may contact our surfing instructor who was very patient with us during our session. Here are his details:

  • Ian: 09281850211

Ditumabo Mother Falls

Located in San Luis. Will require a 20-minute hike. There are food stalls (selling hotdogs, kwek-kwek, lumpia, banana cue, camote cue, etc) along the trail. You can grab a quick breakfast here on your way back. If you can, visit in the early morning to avoid the crowd.

baler trip blog

Note : Some people will tell you that vans and cars are not allowed to go to the start of the trail, and only tricycles can take you there (P200 roundtrip). That’s NOT TRUE. Private cars can go.

Entrance Fee : P30 per person Parking Fee : P30 per vehicle Tour Guide Fee : P200 per guide

baler trip blog

A quick, easy climb is required. But it can get slippery in the afternoon, when drenched guests have wetted the trail.

Entrance Fee : FREE Cottage Rental : P200

Aniao Rock Formations and Lukso-lukso Islets

baler trip blog

Aka Diguisit Islets. A handful of picturesque islets peppering the rocky coast near Diguisit Falls.

Entrance Fee : P20 per head

600-Year Old Balete Tree

A ginormous banyan tree. You can also go inside it for a fee.

baler trip blog

Entrance Fee : P15 Parking Fee : P10 per vehicle If you want to go inside the tree : P10

Ermita Hill

baler trip blog

Where the six families who survived the tsunami ran to. From here, you can enjoy a great view of Baler town and Sabang Beach and other surrounding areas. The entrance fee goes to the scholarship of several students at a nearby college.

Entrance Fee : P15 Parking Fee : P10

Dicasalarin Cove

baler trip blog

A private beach tucked neatly behind the hills of Baler. If you plan on visiting, you will have to register beforehand at Costa Pacifica. (The two properties are owned by the same owner.) If you want to maximize your stay here, we recommend dedicating an entire morning.

Again, tricycles can’t access this because the road is too steep so you might want to pre-arrange a habal-habal ride to take you to Dicasalarin from the trike dropoff point. Your tricycle driver likely knows someone.

Opening hours : 8am-5pm Entrance Fee : P300 (P100 for Costa Pacifica guests) Habal-habal ride : P200-P300 roundtrip

Other Baler Tourist Spots:

  • Ampere Beach
  • PAGASA Viewpoint
  • Baler Museum
  • Aurora House
  • Baler Church
  • Hanging Bridge

Where to Eat in Baler

The three food places that stood out for us are: Kublai, Bayler View, and Dialyn.

Kubli Bistro . A newly opened restaurant in Poblacion. Without a doubt, it is here that we had our best dining experience in town. The food is delish, the place clean, the servings humongous, and the service impeccable. They are proudest of their kubli rice (P345), but it was just okay. But we absolutely loved everything else we tried. Order their barbeque skewers (P275), sisig a la bopes (P230), buffalo wings (P285), and adwas iced tea (P65). Every serving is good for around 3 pax.

baler trip blog

Bayler View . A simple open-air restaurant by the beach. Their menu is loaded with Pinoy and western options. Judging from the tables during our visit, Pinoy spaghetti is a favorite. But we loved their perfectly cooked Buttered Chicken, despite being too sweet for my taste.

baler trip blog

Dialyn’s Bakeshop . An iconic establishment in Baler famous for their brazo de mercedes, yema swirl, asado buns, and more.

Sample Baler Itinerary with Expenses Breakdown

Here’s a sample Baler weekend itinerary. You can tweak this to fit your needs and preferences.

Note that the costs indicated here are per person. However, this itinerary assumes you’re a group of 4, splitting the bill. The cost per stop covers the entrance fee, parking fee, and guide fee (if applicable). For the breakdown, just check out at the “Places to Visit” section above.

Since there are 4 in the group and a tricycle can accommodate only 3, charter 2 tricycles so everyone’s comfortable.

Day 1: DICASALARIN + SURFING 01:30 am – ETD Genesis Bus Cubao – P550 08:00 am – ETA Baler 08:30 am – Early hotel check in or baggage drop 09:00 am – Start Tricycle Tour – P250 (P500/2 pax) 09:30 am – Transfer to habal-habal – P150 (P300/2 pax) 09:40 am – Dicasalarin Cove – P300 + P50 parking 11:40 am – Aniao Rock Formations – P20 12:00 pm – Diguisit Falls – FREE 01:00 pm – Lunch at Poblacion (end tour) 02:00 pm – Back at hotel, rest 03:30 pm – Surf time at Sabang Beach! 05:30 pm – Watch sunset 06:10 pm – Freshen up at hotel 07:30 pm – Dinner at Bayler – P200 10:00 pm – Lights out

Day 2: DITUMABO FALLS + TOWN TOUR 07:00 am – Start tricycle tour – P250 (P500/2pax) 07:30 am – Ditumabo Falls – P95 per person (parking, guide, entrance) 09:30 am – Balete Park – P30 10:30 am – Continue tour: see other stops 12:30 pm – Lunch at Kubli Bistro (end tour) – P250 02:00 pm – Back at hotel, check out 03:30 pm – Joybus to Manila – P750

If you’re a group of 4 and you stay in a quad room at Smart Beach House, each of you should prepare around P3800 . If you want to surf, add P200 per hour for the board rental.

If you have your own ride and you have a P2500 budget for gas and toll fees (divided by 4 pax), the same itinerary will set you back P2400 per person.

You can still reduce the cost by doing the following:

  • Eat at cheaper eateries . The sample itinerary above urges you to eat at Bayler View or Kubli Bistro, but there are much cheaper food places around town. P100 should be more than enough for a decent meal.
  • Wrap up your tour early so you could catch the 2pm Genesis bus to Manila instead of taking the Joybus. It will save you P200.
  • As mentioned, the cost will drop significantly if you have your own ride and your group is bigger . This way you have more to split the gas and toll expenses with.

This travel guide is a work in progress. We’ll be updating this when we remember something and every time we return. If you have more to add, let us know in the comments section below.

[…] For Baler side trip: Baler Budget Travel Guide […]

Jhoana Bassig

Hi, my husband and I are planning to go to Baler next week. We will bring our 2 kids with us. My daughter is 7 and my son is 2. Is it hard to bring kids while touring around? For example with Diguisit Falls and Ditumabo Falls that requires a hike? I hope you can help me out. Also, is it ok to go since its December? Thank you!

Yosh Dimen

Hi Jhoana, the Diguisit hike is very, very short but steep. The waterfall is close to the road. It can be difficult if you’re with a 2yo though.

The Ditumabo hike is easy. It’s generally flat and the trail is well-trodden. There’s also a food stop in the middle.

I think December is great, but expect the water at the base of the waterfall to be extremely cold.

Jhonie Macalintal

Hi Sir! Is it possible to book on the day itself sa mismong terminal ni Genesis or Joy bus?

Yep. Unless peak season kasi konti lang seats so mabilis maubos.

Dredd

Hi Good Day… ilang minutes papunta Ditumabo falls? Keri ba ng 7 years old ito? Thanks much

Mga 30 minutes lang from the parking lot. Yep, kayang kaya ng 7 years old.

Niño Jose Ignacio

Marami bang matutuluyang hotel or room kahit sa mismong araw ng pagpunta namin kami mag hanap,?

Plan for our honeymoon.

Best if you book in advance kung weekend or summer.

Lesterrific

May nakita po kayong resort na pwedeng mag-pitch ng tent? Salamat

Yas

hi ung Diguisit hik. kaya b ito ng 4 yrs old n mataba? he he

Kaya naman, pero agahan nyo na lang para di madulas.

Hi Benson. Yep, madali lang po. If you don’t have your own ride, tricycle tour lang, marami nang mararating.

Kevin D.

Hi @The Poor Traveler , I’ve been following your posts and I find it very informative. Do you have a contact number of the bike rentals in Baler? Thank you

Hi Kevin, wala po eh. Shinare lang sa amin ng guide namin ung info.

Patrick Enrile

Hello! tanong ko lang po about the travel time and the pavement going to Baler? Kaya po ba ng maliit na sasakyan (Toyota Wigo with 3 passengers) yung travel coming from Manila? Not sure kung may part na matarik or rough road on the way there.

Hi Patrick, if I remember correctly, paved naman almost lahat ng dinaanan namin. May part na medyo rough, pero sandali lang yun. I think kaya naman ng Wigo.

Rommel De Leon

Hi! how about the safety & security ng vicinity ok po ba?

Jaren Cruz

ask ko lang po kung saan kame itotour ng tricycle

Hi Jaren! Thanks for this! I updated the post to include the stops.

Jobelle

Wow, sana binasa namin to before kami pumuta, konti lang dito napuntahan namin within 3 days. 10 kaming pumunta, mas nakakamura pag magrrent ng van kung ganito kayo karami tulad namin.

Thanks for sharing, Jobelle! Sana nag-enjoy pa rin kayo. :) Or balik kayo :)

Tosh

Hi. I’m planning to visit Baler on my own sometime in October. It’s going to be my first time to travel, and a solo trip at that. Do you have any suggestion’s on what I can do as a first-time traveler?

Aly

Hi! I’m planning to go to Baler alone next week, can you give me some points on what to expect? Thanks!

Troy

Hi!ask ko lang regarding yung mode of transpo around baler. Sino pwede kausapin for the motorcycle rental na 800/day?and pwede ba to dalhin sa mga places na may parking?balak ko kasi eto nalang ang mode of transpo namin ng kasama ko around baler. Thanks!

Hi Troy, may contact yung guide namin nung nag-visit kami, kaso nawala na kasi yung phone namin na dun naka-save yung number ng guide namin. :(

Arieh

Hi po, just want to ask if magcheck in kami on the spot sa resort, once na makarating sa baler my makikita po ba agad kami, we’re coming from batangas then commute lang po kami kasi masfeel namen ang magtravel na hawak namen ang oras and ano po masusuggest niyo na resort na maganda good for 4 or 5?

Thank you po

Depende. Mahirap masabi.

Pero generally, kung weekday, pwede na walang advance booking. Pero pag summer and weekend, best na meron.

anna liza b.

hello po ano po ba ang mag kakalapit na tourists destination dun… kasi two days lang kami and need pa namin mag bench marking sa mcc???

Check the sample itinerary to see kung ano yung magkakasunod and how much time you can spend at each stop.

John

The anecdote sold it for me. Onto Aurora we go!

It’s nice seeing a fellow Batangueño thrive on blogging. Sana mailibre kita ng kape minsan hahaha

Thanks, John! :) Enjoy Aurora!

San ka sa Batangas?

sammm

hello po. what is the contact no or where can we find a guide to hire for personal tour po? we’re planning to go this month po to baler and it’s our first time going out on vacation, 3 po kami. is it better to hire a guide than getting a tricycle tour, or is that the same thing? we’re just commuting, we don’t have our own car.

If you’re on a budget, you can just charter a tricycle. The drivers usually know where to go. Sila na yung bahala.

But if you want to learn more info about the stops, you can get a guide pero extra bayad yun. Unfortunately, nawala namin ung contact number nung guide namin. :(

Krem

Hello, yung Habal po ba available lang anywhere sa baler, or may marerecommend po kayo?

Hi Krem, dun sa paakyat ba ng Dicasalarin? Merong naghihintay dun sa entry point paakyat.

Queena Caroso

Hello po, Im planning to have a solo travel to baler this coming december. I prefer to rent a motorcycle, do you think its advisable for solo traveller?

Mukhang okay lang naman. Safe naman, I think.

Queena

do you have any recommendation po ba kung saan pwede mag rent ng motorcycle? and best/affordable hotel to stay na malapit sa beach?

josephine capistrano

balak po namin punta baler nxtweek. mga lima kame.. can u recommend us a affordable and clean transient na malapit sa beach .. tenx po

Baler Aurora Travel Guide (Itinerary + Tips)

Baler is a popular surfing destination located in the province of Aurora in the eastern part of the Central Luzon region. It is exactly situated northeast of Luzon facing the vast Philippine Sea and it is bordered by the Sierra Madre mountain range. Baler is the capital city of Aurora and it’s only a five hours drive from Metro Manila. For this reason, it is a perfect destination for tourists who wants to have a quick relaxing escapade during the weekend.

Baler came from the word “balod” which means a native name for mountain pigeon or palomas montes that flourish in the sea. According to its splendid history, Baler was established in the year 1609 by Franciscan missionaries named Fray Blas Palomino. During his reign, Fray Blas Palomino and company continued their trip northward of the Philippines which includes the town of Palanan in Isabela province. The missionaries stayed in Palanan for several years until the administrator of Metro Manila discharged them. In the year 1622, Fray Blas Palomino was killed by the Dutch invader on the island of Celebes.

The Franciscans and the Recollects want to bring Christianity to different places in the Philippines. Hence, their expedition and the aspiration of political glory and religious movement in the country triggered the reconnaissance of the Sierra Madre mountain range and the seaside nearby which includes the town of Baler. In the years before the Spanish missionaries arrived and discover the town, Baler was already a developing and well-known community. The early Dumagat and Ilongot inhabitants’ source of income was fishing and farming. When the town of Baler was unveiled, it was located on the right side of Aguang River which make its way from the Caraballo mountain range in the central part of Luzon island. Moreover, it is rich in history because the town is more than just its astonishing waves.

Nevertheless, in the year 1735, a staggering tsunami eradicated the coastal town. In the year 1979, the epic psychological war movie named Apocalypse Now was videotaped and shot in Baler for their surfing scenes. When the filming session was finished, the staff members of the movie left their surfboards as a remembrance. For this reason, the locals learned to surf and in the succeeding years, the place become a sanctuary for beach and surf lovers. On the other hand in the year 2018, the well-known Seige of Baler was featured on a streaming service called Netflix. The title of the movie is named “Our Last Men in the Philippines”. It showcases the historic Spanish–American War and Philippine-American War between the year 1899 up to the year 1902.

Presently, Baler is considered a third-class municipality and it is situated around 270 kilometers away from Metro Manila. It is a municipality rich in natural resources which include clean shoreline and seawater. During the summer season in the Philippines, Baler is one of the most visited tourist destinations among local and international visitors. Furthermore, the town becomes an awesome destination for bikers, motorcyclists, and road-trippers as they will pass a scenic road through the mountainside. So if you want to see the charming beauty of this place and learn some history then what are you waiting for invite your friends now and visit Haler Baler.

During the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, the Spanish armed forces made the church their barrack until they surrendered it in the year 1899. On the other hand, Baler Church was also the home of a well-known large bell called La Campana De Baler. Fray Jose de Esperagoza take it to the Aurora province in the seventeenth century. La Campana De Baler became well-known for its roaring echoing sounds that even reached the adjacent towns of San Luis and Dipaculao. During the reign of former President Manuel Quezon from the year 1935 up to 1944, the church has gone through a major refurbishing and rebuilding. Wow, thank you for this very detailed guide. I'm seriously saving this for our future trips as a family. How big is the tricycle that you rent out? Can 5 people fit in? Also, are the waves safe for kids?

I remember when we went to Baler few years back. We had so much fun even tho it was a really loooong drive. The scenery is just marvelous. The road trip alone is quite satisfying for me.

Marami pa rin nagsusurf sa Baler ngayon? This is such a good itinerary na andaming napupuntahan. I'm gonna remember that vintage car of President Quezon when I go to Baler and the aurora's blend. I mean, my coffee addict self can't resist it.

This place is wonderful! Such a pity that I haven't got a chance to visit it when I was in the Philippines for many years. I hope one day, that plan will come true. The whole Baler is an amazing tourism spot both local and international guests.

When I think of Baler, I think of the big waves. the first statue in Ermita Hill aptly depicts the life there. Such a beautiful place. I wish I will have the chance to explore it.

Yes to baler!!! This has been one of the places i wanted to visit. I hear the waves here are killer!

Mention Baler and the first thing that will pop in everyone’s mind is surfing! And this without a doubt is true because Sabang Beach is a real surfer’s paradise. But more than surfing, the town is increasingly becoming popular not only to surfing enthusiasts, primarily because of its natural beauty, historical significance and other attractions.

Baler is the capital of the province of Aurora. It is situated on the east coast of Luzon, fronting the roaring waves of Pacific Ocean and enclosed by the mountains of Sierra Madre. The town’s relative isolation has preserved much of its historical sites, cultural heritage and tradition that are all deeply rooted on its vibrant past.

Baler

Looking back, there are major events in the past three centuries that marked significantly in the town’s history: on December 27, 1735, a phenomenal tidal wave (“tromba marina” in Spanish) wiped out the coastal town; from June 27, 1898 to June 2, 1899, fifty four soldiers of Spanish Army barricaded inside the town’s church and bore the brunt of the Philippine revolutionary forces; and in 1979, the Hollywood classic film “Apocalypse Now” filmed their surfing scenes in Sabang Beach. All these plus all those little folklore and stories shaped the town to what it is now.

Baler is Baler! It has unique identity and charm that sets it apart from other places in the country. Have a bit of adventure, a lesson in history and commune with nature, visit Baler!

Where to Eat in Baler

When in Baler, dining should not be a problem. Most major hotels in Sabang have their own restaurants that are open to public. Kubli Bistro, Crash Pad Baler, Aliya Surf Cam Restaurant, Bayler’s Inn, Bay’s Inn Hungry Surfer Restaurant and Baler Surfer’s Grill are some of the most popular restaurants in the area.

My personal favorite is Kubli Bistro with their good pizza, paella and other Mexican and Filipino foods. Bayler’s Inn is also worth a try with their Tuna Carbonara and Longanisa Aglio Olia Pasta as well as their Chocnut Turon Ala Mode. If you are into buffet, Chef Jerry Shan’s Place in the plaza is the place to be for only P199 per person. Night life is limited to restaurants along Sabang Beach.

Baler Travel Guide: Places to Visit, Things to Do

ALT="places to visit baler aurora"

WELCOME TO BALER TRAVEL GUIDE ! This is my second time visiting Baler. The first time I visited the province was in 2014. At that time, I wasn’t a travel blogger yet. Also, I was alone the first time I visited here. In 2019 , I decided to go back with friends for my post-birthday celebration. When I got bitten by a travel bug, I started celebrating my birthday by traveling to different places. Baler, Aurora is not as difficult to visit whether you are a first-timer or not. With that being said, I will be sharing my Baler travel guide with you guys!

Table of Contents

What made me go back to Baler?

Have you ever thought of any place that you wanted to visit all of a sudden? A place that suddenly popped out your mind? A place where you would like to ignite your wanderlust? Recently, I have felt this kind of feeling. There was something within me that I wanted to visit Baler. I didn’t have any definite plans, but I suddenly wanted to pack up my bag to travel to Baler.

More to that, I had the momentarily urge to go surfing. Surfing is my first love. When I got to know about surfing on TV for the first time, I instantly fell in love with it! Therefore, I started my adventures by playing with the waves in 2014. That was the first time I went to Baler. Also, this was my first solo travel!

Short History of Baler, Aurora

Baler – it is the capital town of Aurora, Philippines. Found in 1609 by Franciscan missionaries, Baler is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines.

This is where the former President Manuel L. Quezon was born. More to that, Baler is one of the most historical landmarks in the country during the Spanish colonial rule. It is where the Philippine Revolution fought against Spain which started in 1898 – it is more commonly known as the S iege of Baler.

Baler Travel Guide: Things to do

It is never impossible to visit Baler over the weekend. In fact, you can even visit most of the popular destinations in the town for two days. That sounds a bit exhausting though. Staying over the weekend is okay, but staying a little longer would be better in order to get to know more about Baler! You don’t have to worry about getting lost in Baler because it is just a small town in Aurora province. Also, the locals are so friendly that will make you feel at ease. You can go around Baler by tricycle or van. The tricycle costs Php 800 which is already good for a group of people.

Side Note: This is my second time in Baler. So, my friends and I decided to visit only the most important and best places around the town. Also, we wanted to stay longer in each of the places. That means this Baler travel guide will tell you most of the main tourist spots in Baler.

Dimatubo Falls

Known as The Mother Falls, Dimatubo Falls is one of the most popular destinations and main attractions in the town of Baler. Its crystal clear water makes the waterfall look enchanting! In addition, its strong current makes it even more beautiful. Indeed, Mother Falls is the grandest waterfall that you could ever see in the town.

But , before you get to see this majestic waterfall, you have to go trekking for about 30-45 minutes. The trek is not as easy as you might think because you still need to go through with the slippery rocks. Also, you have to cross the river and go along with the dirty, muddy path.

Salsa Fusion Restaurant: Best Mexican Fusion Restaurant in Boracay

A tour guide is a  strict compliance for you to do the trekking and go to see Mother Falls.

Registration Fee: Php 10

Tour guide Fee: Php 200 (good for sharing – 4 PAX)

Balete Tree

Also known as the Millennium Tree , Balete Tree is the oldest and the biggest tree in the Philippines. This 600-year-old tree is located in Maria, Aurora which is just next to Baler. It is not too far from the town of Baler, so it is very accessible to visit this place. Balete Tree is always associated with creepy urban legends. Most people believe that there are some mysterious and supernatural creatures living in the tree.

Balituk: A Haven Place to Stay in Baler, Aurora

Therefore, many people are afraid to get near the tree. Yet, Balete Tree has become a tourist destination for local and foreign tourists. You might think that this tree is not as interesting as other tourist spots. Actually, you can get inside the tree and witness the wonders of the Balete Tree. As you go inside the Balete Tree Park, there is also a store that sells souvenirs and some delicacies at a very affordable price.

Entrance Fee:

Adults – Php 15

Kids – Php 10

Hanging Bridge

This hanging bridge is located at Brgy. Zabali. It is often visited by tourists because of its scenic views that it offers.

Digisit Falls

Digisit Falls is just near the road. It is an easy trek and it is possible to reach the waterfall within 2-3 minutes. Digisit Falls looks so beautiful. Its water is so cold that you will love dipping yourself in. But, the water is shallow which is not recommended for swimming activities.

Digisit Beach

Digisit Beach is close to Digisit Falls. In addition, it is also where you can find those beautifully-looking rock formations. Its sand is white, yet has lots of corals. Make sure you have your slippers when you walk around the beach.

Dimadimalangat and Luksu-lukso Islets

These islets in front of Digisit beach look simply beautiful. From here, you can take good photographs, especially during the sunset. There is really nothing special about these islets and rock formations, but they add to the beauty of Baler.

Sabang Beach

If you are into surfing or beach bum, this is the best place for you! Sabang Beach is the most-visited destination mainly because of surfing. Whether you are an amateur or a pro-surfer, it doesn’t matter at all. As long as you can ride with the waves, you will surely adore the beauty of Sabang beach. It might not have white-sand like any other beaches, but the strong waves that it has will definitely amaze you!

But, if you are not really into surfing, it’s okay. You can still relax and enjoy staying at the beach. Have fun laying on its fine, black sand. Just expect the crowd most especially in the afternoon. Most surfing lessons cost Php 250 per hour. But in our case, we got ours for Php 200 only.

Other Places to Visit in Baler

Museo de Baler

Quezon Memorial Park

Doña Aurora Memorial Shrine

San Luis Obispo Parish (Baler Catholic Church)

Dicasalarin Bay

Ermita Hill

Where to stay in Baler, Aurora?

Balituk resort.

Balituk Resort is one of the best accommodations to stay at when you are in Baler. The beach is so wonderful that will make you feel relax. In addition, this is the part of Sabang beach that people do not usually visit, there is a chance for you to feel the place like yours. The ambiance around the area is so calm that it makes you fall in love with the place itself!

Where to eat in Baler?

Kusina luntian.

Make sure to pay a visit and dine in at Kusina Luntian when in Baler! This is one of the most popular eateries in Baler due to its unique concept. Once you dine in, it feels like home because you will be eating like what typical Filipinos do during mealtime. Filipinos are known for the love of eating with bare hands or to have a boodle fight. Eat like a true Filipino at Kusina Luntian!

How to get there?

From Pasay/Cubao, take the Genesis bus bound for Baler from the bus terminal. There are two types of Genesis Buses bound for Baler. The Regular Bus.

This type of bus will take you to Baler for 6-7 hours of travel time, but it is much cheaper than the other one. The Joy Bus is the other type of Genesis bus that will take you to Baler. This type of bus is a non-stop bus. If you ride here, it will only take you 4-5 hours of travel time. Although, it is a bit pricey to take the Joy Bus. In addition, you need to make a reservation first if you plan to ride a Joy Bus

You may check the schedule here .

Facade of Baler Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish, or more commonly known as Baler Church, was constructed back in 1611. It first stood on the site of an important battle called the "Siege of Baler" which took place during the Philippine Revolution.

The church was initially made from bamboo and nipa. Years after, it was renovated using stones and rocks that were held together by lime and honey. However, the church was later destroyed by a massive tidal wave known as "Tromba Marina" in 1735. Soon after that natural disaster, locals rebuilt the chapel on the highest point in San Luis Street in Barangay Buhangin, where it currently stands.

During the Spanish period in the country, Spanish forces made the church their garrison until they surrendered it in 1899. Aside from this, Baler Church was also the home of a famous large bell called La Campana De Baler. Fray Jose de Esperagoza brought it to the province in the 17th century. The bell later became well-known for its loud echoing sounds that even reached the neighboring towns of San Luis, Maria, and Dipaculao.

In light of its cultural significance in Baler, the National Historical Institute proclaimed it as a historical landmark in 2000.

11. Baler Hanging Bridge

Baler Hanging Bridge above a river

The Baler Hanging Bridge is situated along Zabali Road and connects the barangays of Tibang and Sabang. The bridge is made of wooden planks and railings that are suspended above a wide river by sturdy metal cables. It measures about a meter in width and is over a hundred meters long.

While locals often use it for their daily errands, it has become one of the well-known tourist attractions in Baler, Aurora over the years due to the stunning views it offers. As you make your way from one end of the bridge to the other, you will be able to get a panoramic view of the river and the vast mountainscape in the distance. Travelers can also catch a glimpse of the river's opening that connects to Baler Bay.

Visitors who traverse the bridge are treated to a refreshing breeze as well, thanks to its position. Before reaching the other end, you can also take the time to take photos of the beautiful scenery around you. On either end of the walkway are a couple of souvenir shops that feature local delicacies and trinkets that showcase the area's culture.

10. Baler Lighthouse

Baler Lighthouse on a hill in Baler

Another popular spot that provides tourists with stunning views of Baler's natural wonders is the Baler Lighthouse, one of the top lighthouses in the Philippines. This white structure sits on one of the hills of Sitio Tibag. After arriving at the parking area, visitors will have to hike up the hill to reach the towering structure.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you are immediately rewarded with a stunning view of Baler Bay's deep blue waters. You can also see Diguisit Beach from the hill's peak. For travelers looking for an even better vantage point, you can climb up the steps that circle the lighthouse to reach its top.

From the top, you can feel the sea breeze blowing while enjoying the panoramic view of the bay and the nearby hills. You can also see the structure's huge light and solar panels that power it. While it no longer serves as a beacon for ships coming to Baler, tourists still drop by to take in the view.

9. Museo de Baler

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the province by visiting their local museum, Museo de Baler. One of the must-visit museums in the Philippines, the two-story building stands in Quezon Park in Barangay Poblacion. Even before entering the museum, you can already see a beautiful artwork on its red brick exterior.

The installation depicts crucial moments and individuals throughout the province's history.  Meanwhile, a statue of the late Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, a native of Baler, sits in the center of the park.

Inside the museum, you will see exhibits and several historical artifacts that date back to the Spanish colonization period in the Philippines. Among these items are old letters from missionaries who lived in the region from the early 1600s up to the late 1890s.

On its second floor, visitors can find pieces relating to the Siege of Baler. These artworks include paintings of those who took part in the fight and those who survived it as well. Along with the historical pieces, the museum also features more contemporary pieces of art. The most notable ones are the props from the 2008 Filipino drama film named after the province.

8. Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home

Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home in Baler

Photo by Provincial Government of Aurora

A few minutes away from the museum is another historic site: a replica of the ancestral home of Aurora Quezon, the wife of the late president Manuel L. Quezon. The cement and wooden home is situated on the corner of Rizal Street and San Luis street. It also features a roof made from dried nipa leaves, which was often used for traditional homes in the Philippines.

However, the house is not an exact copy of Aurora's original home, as local authorities recreated it with sturdier material. Despite this, it still features many items, such as a coal-heated iron that were likely used by Aurora's family back in the day. The interior also houses a large colored painting of Aurora and the late president.

While Aurora was widely known as the second First Lady of the Philippines, she was an important historical figure in her own right as well. Aurora gained the respect of her fellow Baler natives and other Filipinos through her various humanitarian efforts. Among these was her time as the first Chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross and her involvement in advocating for Filipino women's right to vote.

In honor of her notable contributions, the province where Baler is located, Aurora, was named after her.

View of the Balete Tree's roots and canopy

The Balete Tree in Aurora is known for being the biggest of its kind in the whole continent of Asia. This enormous tree is cared for in a park inside the municipality of Maria Aurora. This tree has been around for over 600 years and has grown to about 200 feet.

Balete trees are also often regarded as homes of fairies and other magical creatures in Philippine mythology. Whether or not you believe in myths, you can slip past an opening between the roots of the tree here to inspect for yourself.

The tree is so huge that several people can fit inside its interior of twisted roots. The interior appears almost like an otherworldly destination, as light can only come in from the gaps between the entangling roots.

From inside the tree, you can climb up the tangle of roots to get a closer look at the tree's large crown. However, scaling the tree from the inside involves squeezing through tight gaps. Aside from this, travelers can also climb the tree from the outside by clinging to the sturdy roots that make up the gigantic evergreen.

6. Diguisit and Aniao Islet

One rock formation in Diguisit Beach, Baler

Diguisit Beach is one of the popular surfing spots in Baler and is located about 11 KM from the town proper. In addition to the constant waves that are great for surfing, this white sand beach also boasts unique rock formations and crystal clear water.

The most famous formations here are the Aniao Islets, which are two small islands. These islets were naturally shaped by the strong waves that slam against the shore when the winds are strong. Surrounding these sturdy formations were rocky landscapes that become pools of cool water whenever the tide is low.

  • Book a Dingalan Aurora day tour

Each islet is also home to small patches of greenery that make their profile even more unique. The islets make for amazing photos at sunset when the tide is low, and the orange-pinkish hues reflect on the pools of water surrounding them. Aside from the natural formations, Diguisit Beach is also known as an ideal location for snorkeling from May to November when the winds are weaker.

5. Ampere Beach and Rock Formations

Rock formations at Ampere Beach, Baler

Another destination that features rock formations is the Ampere Beach, just west of Baler Beach. In contrast to the finer sands of most beaches that line Baler Bay, this spot boasts a shoreline comprised mainly of different-sized pebbles. While it is not an ideal swimming spot due to the strong waves that lap the shore, it still attracts tourists thanks to its unique landscape.

Aside from admiring the sturdy rock formations that jut from the beach's waters, tourists can also make their own "rock formations" with the smooth pebbles that make up the shore. Feel free to get creative as you stack rocks on top of each other, and make sure to snap a photo of your small towers for a unique souvenir! Though the pebble beach and the large rock formations are the main draws of this attraction, travelers can find a lesser-known spot just past the karst-like walls.

Beyond the rock walls, you can find a cave. Locals are said to forecast the weather by measuring how loud the waves slam against the interior of the cave. The louder it gets, the worse the weather would supposedly be.

4. Ermita Hill

The entrance to Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is a historical and natural landmark located in Barangay Zabali. Its cultural significance dates back to 1735, when a large tidal wave called Tromba Marina struck the region. During the natural disaster, the residents headed up the hill to seek refuge from the fast-rising waters that were engulfing the homes.

However, only a few families managed to make it up the hill in time, while the strong surge of water wiped out the rest. To commemorate the hardships that the natives had to overcome, statues depicting people helping each other scale the hill were placed here. Most of the artworks were put along the cemented path that leads up to the hilltop.

Once you reach the top, you will enter a deck that provides a panoramic view of Baler Bay, its surrounding forestry, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Take your time to relax and take photos before heading back down. There are also gazebos where you can sit and take in the view and a modest chapel where you can say a prayer.

3. Dicasalarin Cove

View of Dicasalrin Cove from a nearby hill

Dicasalarin Cove is a private-owned beach that attracts tourists with its pristine waters and stunning white sand beach. The beach is surrounded by natural landscapes that often break the waves, making the water here calmer than most beaches in Baler. Since the area is managed by the owners of Costa Pacifica, a nearby resort, travelers must first register here to reach the cove.

The cove sits about 10 KM away from the resort and best accessed by car or renting out tricycles or motorcycles. After arriving at the cove, you will be greeted by a picturesque shoreline that stretches for miles on both sides. Unwind and enjoy the cove's cool waters by going for a swim or snorkeling.

Aside from the cove's shore, travelers can also head up to the nearby lighthouse to get a beautiful view of the bay. Guests also frequent the lighthouse because of its more modern and geometric shape. If you want to extend your stay on this secluded cove, you can also rent tents, air beds, and sleeping bags. You can set up camp along the shoreline to fall asleep to the gentle sound of waves lapping the beach.

2. Ditumabo Falls

View of Ditumabo Falls from a natural pool

The Ditumabo Falls is a grand waterfall that stands at about 140 feet tall. Locals commonly refer to it as The Mother Falls, largely due to its sheer size, especially when compared to other waterfalls in the province. Though it is located in the neighboring town of San Luis, this attraction is often visited by tourists when staying in Baler since it is only about 15 KM from Baler's town proper.

Nestled in a lush forest, travelers first have to trek through rivers and rocky paths to reach the majestic waterscape. The trek can also prove to be difficult as the rocks in the rivers can be slippery. While the journey to the falls is not smooth, just getting to see it up close makes the trip worthwhile.

After arriving at the falls, you will be greeted by natural pools that the clear, ice-cold water drops into. The rocky basin is large and is ideal for swimming, so make sure to take a dip and take in the grandeur of this natural wonder.

View of Sabang Beach's shoreline

Sabang Beach is a gray sand beach that is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Baler. Thanks to the frequent waves that approach the shore, it is a great place to learn how to surf for the first time. Various shops and resorts in Baler that line the shore offer lessons for beginners and even more advanced surfers.  It is one of the top places to visit in Baler, Aurora.

Baler natives began to surf in 1976, when the epic war movie "Apocalypse Now" filmed in Charlie's Point, a resort along this beach. Soon after the production wrapped up filming, locals taught themselves how to ride the waves with surfboards that the movie's crew had left behind. Since then, more and more people come to this beach to learn as well.

Thanks to the large crowds of surfers that the waves here attract, the beach scene is often lively. After you've had your fill of surfing, you can then enjoy the delicious cuisine served at the beachside restaurants. Travelers can also stay until after the sun sets to partake in the local nightlife scene or to simply go on a stroll along the two-kilometer-long stretch of sand.

Along with surfing, guests often come to this beach to marvel at the stunning colors of a sunrise. Since the beach faces the east and opens to the Pacific Ocean, travelers can get an unobstructed view of the sun as it breaks through the night sky and paints it in warm, orange hues.

BALER BUDGET RESORTS

by thepinay solobackpacker | Aug 31, 2018 | Baler , BEACH RESORTS | 3 comments

Surfers flock to the rugged coast of Baler, one of the best surfing spots in the Philippines. Today’s cheery holiday bustle around Sabang Beach, popular with surfers, makes it hard to imagine that this once sleepy town in Aurora province was once devastated by an enraging tsunami. Only a few residents survived, they swam and climbed towards Ermita Hill. A mural now housed in Museo de Baler, and a statue of residents holding hands on Ermita Hill now serve as a reminder of the deadly incident.

Over the years, Baler has made its mark on the tourists radar because of surfing and its beautiful beaches. The long stretch of Diguisit Beach is a place of spectacular views and bracing walks. The remote Dicasalarin Cove, hemmed in by jungle-clad mountains is truly picture-perfect, while the striking cliff here dives into the turquoise waters. Meanwhile, Ampere Beach is a photographer paradise, because of its stone-clad coast and maddening waves, a perfect place to shoot long exposure during sunrise.

If you are planning to tour Baler soon and you want to stay on a budget, here’s a comprehensive list of the top-rated Baler beach resorts according to confirmed guests.

Baler Bucket List: Top Tourist Spots and Best Places to Visit in Baler, Philippines

Table of Contents

J ust 5 hours away from Manila lies Baler, dubbed as one of the Philippines’ best-surfing destinations. More than being the surfing capital of the North, the beautiful town of Aurora provides a lot of activities and historical sites where both local and foreign tourists can really appreciate and enjoy.

Best Things to do in Baler, Aurora

Here’s our list of things to see and do if you plan on having a Baler escapade anytime soon.

Visit the Famous Balete Tree

600-Year-Old Balete Tree in Baler

Also called the Millenium Tree, this 200-ft tall tree situated at Barangay Quirino has undoubtedly stood the test of time and has been one of Baler’s favorite tourist spots.

Locals said that it has been in its place for almost 600 plus years now. You can take pictures and shop around the vicinity.

As a matter of fact, you can ask some of the locals to take pictures of you because they know where the best angle from the tree is.

Surf at Sabang Beach

Non-stop waves begets non-stop surfing action in Baler

What better way to fully appreciate Baler than to try surf, right? The Surfing session at Sabang Beach usually costs around 300-400 pesos, including the board rental.

This beach is usually the most crowded place in Baler and is known for its long stretch of gray sandy shoreline. Before surfing, you’ll need to do the basic steps and stretching for 5 to 10 minutes, and you’re good to go.

Surf instructors will guide you for one hour, so there’s no need to worry if you’re a beginner. However, if you prefer stronger waves, you can head over to Lindy’s Point.

Chill at Baler Surfer Grill

Baler Surfer Grill, a feast for all senses

Among the many dining options in Baler, the Baler Surfer Grill is considered one of the favorites among locals and tourists.

This one is very noticeable along the long stretch in the shoreline with a Volkswagen Beetle car parked in front. This place put up the music, surfboards, and enough wooden chair for guests to add a more authentic beach vibe.

Some of the must-tries are the grilled fish, the Bulalo, and Chicken Barbecue. Give it a try!

Visit the Ditumabo Falls

Ditumabo Falls in Baler photo by Chad M

The first thing newcomers do in Baler is visit the Ditumabo Falls, a 20-minute trek from the starting point. Located at San Luis, the Ditumabo is also called the Mother Falls and the most rewarding trek one will experience.

Make sure you have all the energy to trek, as you’ll pass through stony paths, wooden bridges, and even cross rivers with fast currents (make sure you bring sandals to prevent slippers from being washed away).

Once you get there, you’ll be welcomed with the cold and refreshing waters and the cascading waterfall’s relaxing sound. A breathtaking destination in Baler.

Get Your Breakfast Fix at El Teodoro Canteen

Tapsilog by Yvette Tan via Flickr

El Teodoro Canteen is one of the best silogs in town. Usually, tourists visit the place before starting their adventure in Baler.

It serves home-cooked meals for lunch, such as pork sinigang, tuna, dinuguan, and pinakbet.

Try Gerry Shan’s Place!

Hungry surfers usually head over to Gerry Shan’s for their Chinese and Filipino-themed buffet.

Starting at 11 in the morning, people flock to the restaurant located at Quezon Street, Barangay 2, to taste their signature dishes.

It comes with a free-flowing iced tea as well. Definitely a must-visit!

Take a Detour at Dicasalarin Cove

Dicasalarin Beach

If you want to see a breathtaking view and one-of-a-kind destination in Baler, then head over to Dicasalarin Cover, owned by the Angara family.

You’ll get a sweeping view of the clear blue waters, fantastic rock formations, and hilltops atop the lighthouse.

Other must-try activity here includes snorkeling, where you’ll see the rich marine life of Baler. You can also do a picnic, but make sure to leave no trash behind.

Cross the Zabali Hanging Bridge

Hanging Bridge in Brgy. Zabali

Crossing this bridge is not for the faint of heart. However, the views atop are amazing and definitely fantastic.

The river and the mountain views are one-of-a-kind and will definitely bring anyone some peace of mind.

Remember that the wind may sway the bridge, so only bring friends who are not afraid of heights. It’s located at the endpoint of Zabali road.

Trip down Memory Lane at Museo de Baler

Museo de Baler

Know the rich history and culture of Baler and visit Museo de Baler near the Quezon Memorial Park. The two-story museum houses several photos, artifacts, paintings, sculptures, and other artworks from the Spanish, Japanese, and American occupation periods.

It is open daily from 8am to 5pm.

Visit Doña Aurora Quezon House

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

Just a few walks from the Baler Church lies the Doña Aurora Quezon House, the wife of the late President Manuel Quezon, where you’ll also see the presidential car inside the compound.

The house is made of wood and nipa, which is more or like an upgrade of the famous Bahay-Kubo.

Inside the well-preserved house are memorabilia, colorful paintings displayed on the walls, furniture made with bamboo, old-style flat iron, and some old coffee table. The entrance fee is 15 pesos.

Experience Sunset at Diguisit Beach

Diguisit Rock Formations

Witness another God-given wonder when you visit Diguisit Beach, aka the Rocky Paradise.

Professional surfers usually prefer this place because waves are stronger and more challenging to surf.

Also, rock formations called Lukso-Lukso islets are picture-perfect scenery, which also deserves a visit. Try staying until sundown!

See Baler in a Different Perspective at Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill Viewpoint

Another great spot to take a great picture of Sabang Beach is heading to Ermita Hill. Aside from providing far-reaching views of the town, it is also said that this place served as a sanctuary when it was stricken by a Tsunami in 1703.

You can visit the Tromba Marina, where a sculpture of life-size human climbing the hill was displayed to remind of that incident.

Now that we’ve provided you with our top 12 best things to do in Baler, an exciting weekend getaway is now within your reach!

BALER | Travel Guide + Itinerary + Budget

Baler Travel Blog Guide Itinerary Budget

Baler is the birthplace of surfing in the Philippines. Once a laid-back coastal town on the eastern side of Central Luzon in the Philippines, surfing has since pinned it on the tourist map, bringing in tourists, quirky restaurants, and posh hotels on its shore. Besides surfing, this small town in the Province of Aurora also boasts of a few historic sites—being the birthplace of Manuel L. Quezon—a spread of beaches, interesting rock formations, waterfalls and lighthouses. While the town of Baler is but a small spot in the whole of Aurora, it has since become the starting point and base of operations for touring the region. From here, visitors can check the nearby municipalities of Maria Aurora, Dipaculao, and San Luis, all the way up to the farther reaches of Dingalan, Dinalungan, Casiguran, and Dilasag. For the purpose of this travel guide, I would be limiting the scope to those areas readily accessible from Baler.

A two-day weekend tour of Baler is entirely possible. With it, you can visit almost all the nearby tourist spots, and even get to surf at Sabang Beach. But if you’re planning to see the rock formations and beach further north on Dipaculao, you might have to file a leave of absence or wait for a long weekend—you’d need to add one more day to your Baler itinerary. For the purpose of this guide, I would be outlining a DIY tour of Baler with the expenses going as low as possible by joining group tours and sharing rooms.

Travel Guide: Baler, Aurora

baler trip blog

Baler, the capital town of the province of Aurora, is a haven for surfers and bikers. This laid-back coastal town is known primarily for its waves. Numerous surf shops are situated along Sabang beach catering to novice and the seasoned surfers.

baler trip blog

Baler is also a great destination for motorcyclists and road-trippers, as getting here involves a scenic ride passing roads that zigzags through the mountains. But for those who want to skip the long ride and just enjoy explore on two wheels once they get there, it’s easy enough to hop on a bus from Manila, then just rent bicycles or motorcycles from town.

baler trip blog

Baler offers a mix of that cool surfer vibe similar to towns like San Juan in La Union and Siargao while still retaining the laid-back provincial appeal and local hospitality. It’s not as crowded, but still has the facilities to accommodate different types of travelers. This makes it an appealing destination for solo travelers or groups those who want to explore off-the-beaten path destinations in the rest of Aurora province.

baler trip blog

Baler also offers an interesting historical and cultural destination, being the backdrop of the infamous Siege of Baler, a battle of the Philippine Revolution and concurrently the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War.

baler trip blog

The 1979 war film Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando, Robert Duvali and Martin Sheen, was filmed in Baler and actually gave birth to the surfing culture here. When filming finished, crew members left their surfboards behind, and locals learned to ride the waves.

Where exactly is Baler?

Baler is a second-class municipality and capital of the province of Aurora in the Philippines. It is located around 230 kilometers northeast of Manila via a mountain pass accessible by bus and private vehicles. Aurora is a long province facing the Philippine Sea, and bordered by the provinces of Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan.

How to get to Baler

From Manila, travel time to Baler is roughly 5 to 6 hours. If you’re taking public transportation, the most direct way to get there is via the Joy Bus of Genesis Transport. You can also reach Baler via Victory Liner bus to Cabanatuan. From there, you’ll have to transfer to a van or another bus to bring you to Baler.

baler trip blog

Genesis Transport Inc. provides a direct route from Metro Manila to Baler. The bus ride can take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours depending on traffic with the fare costs about P500. Their terminal is located along EDSA in Pasay City and Cubao with first trip departing 3:00 AM leaving at hourly intervals. Alternatively, you can take buses like Victory Liner which go to Cabanatuan and than transfer to a public utility van heading for Baler at the terminal. Last trip of vans depends on numbers of passengers. Van travel time is 2.5 hours.

baler trip blog

Genesis Transport has a more comfortable option via their executive coach Joy Bus. For a fare of P700+, you get to travel in style and with NO STOPOVERS. The Joy Bus has an onboard comfort room, free snacks served by a bus stewardess, free wifi, blanket & pillow and a good morning kit. Schedule is 12MN and 4:30AM. By car or private vehicle:

baler trip blog

From Manila, enter the North Expressway at Balintawak and exit at SCTEX (entry at LaPaz, Tarlac toll gate). From there, follow the highway leading to Aliaga and to Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. From Cabanatuan City Proper, take the Nueva Ecija-Aurora highway, passing thru the towns of Talavera, Rizal, and Pantabangan until you reach the Aurora border, then through the towns of Maria Aurora, San Luis, and finally, Baler.

Note: For those traveling on small displacement motorcycles that can’t pass the Expressway, open the route on Googlemaps and click “Avoid tolls and highways” option.

Getting around in Baler

Bicycle:  Baler is a great destination for cyclists. Mountain bikes can be rented in shops and guesthouses for P300/day. You can easily go around the main tourist sights around town on bikes.

baler trip blog

Motorbike:  If you want to cover more ground and explore further destinations (like the Millennium Tree and Dicasalarin Cove), it’s better to rent a motorbike. Motorbikes (mostly semi-automatic XRMs and full manual motorbikes) are widely available in Sabang beach, costing P500-P800/day depending on the model. There are also a few automatic scooters for rent. Both bicycles and motorbikes are available for rent at  Pajaroja Lodge along Sabang Beach.

baler trip blog

As of 2019, some establishments offer motorbike rentals with surf racks, which is the easiest way you can check out surf spots in the area. BALER RENT A BIKE: 0919-5299751 / 0905-53960094

Tricycle:  Tricycle drivers double as tour guides in Baler and offer trike tours to the main destinations around Baler including: Baler Church, Dona Aurora House, Museo de Baler, Ermita Hill, Diguisit Falls, Aniao Islet on Diguisit Beach, Hanging Bridge, Millennium Tree, and Mother Falls. Trike tours cost P500 (half day) – P800/whole day (good for up to 3 people) depending on the destinations to be visited.

baler trip blog

TIP: If you want a shortcut from Sabang Beach to Cemento Beach, you can ride a boat at T. Molina Street. From there, you will emerge at Castillo, a road leading out to Ermita Hill. Boat ride takes less than 5 minutes and fare costs P5 per person. This cuts travel time by 30-45 mins.

Where to go / What to do in Baler

Learn to surf at sabang beach.

With its long stretch of sandy shoreline and soft and shallow oceanbed, Sabang Beach in Baler is an ideal place for those who want to learn to surf. There are lots of surf shops along the beach including Charlie Does Surf School, Michael’s Surf Shop & Nalu Surf Camp where you can hire surfing instructors and rent surf boards. While the waves are best during peak surfing season from September to February, you can still catch some baby waves right near the shore all year around.

Surfing lessons with instructors cost P350-400/hour. If you don’t need an instructor, surf board rentals cost just P200/hour, P400/half-day and P800-1000 for whole day rentals. If you want bigger waves, you’ll need to rent a motorized banca to reach different surfing spots.

Hike and swim at Ditumabo Falls

San Luis, a neighboring town of Baler is the jump off point for a hike to the Mother Falls, also known as Ditumabo Waterfalls. To get here, one must hike up a trail of rocks and pebbles, muddy footpaths, wade through streams, and clamber over slippery rocks passing multiple knee-deep river crossings.

baler trip blog

The 1.3 km hike can take about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace. Because of a typhoon that hit in 2015, the trail and basin pool has changed a bit since my first visit. Taking a dip here is like an ice bucket challenge.

Baler is a nice place. can’t wait to be here again. Malamig resort offers a low budget accomodation. http://blog.philboard.net/blog/the-baler-trip-day-2/ . Maybe we will go here again next year and by that time we will try the surfing.

Very nice and well written post! Just came from Baler and it seems like i missed a few tourist sites.

Does Genesis also offers buses not on Joy Bus like ordinary a/c bus to Baler as well? Please do reply thank you.

Hi Ian. Yes. Here’s a more detailed travel guide including the bus skeds of Genesis by blogger Lakwatsero.

Hi Kara, safe ba sa tent city?

Umm. Not sure what you mean. Much safer than Manila, I’d say :p Wala naman nawalan ng gamit when we were there.

cool! Thanks!

hi kara.. me and my wife are plannin’ to go to baler this coming holy week.. will it be better if we’ll bring our own car or take the bus? i just want to figure out if we’ll be able to visit all the tourist sites if we’ll take the public transpo from manila to baler. i was just concern about the distance of each tourist sites for one another. and last thing, is it advisable to bring our son aged 7?

Hi Ryan, we took a hired van when we went there and the roads were a bit rough on the vehicle. I heard they’ve been improved though. If you do take the bus, here’s a useful post on public transpo and getting around in Baler . As for bringing your son, why not? I know lots of families who travel with much younger kids. It depends on the kind of activities they like to do. Here’s a family-friendly IT of Baler by Our Awesome Planet. Enjoy your Holy Week trip! 🙂

hi pwede ba mag isa mag stay sa tent city?baka kasi may minimum.na persons…taaka may dala ako na tent magkano per night kailangan ba reservations baka.kasi mainusan ng space thnx po

For inquiries, please contact Baywalk Tent City directly. Eto number nila: 09293774232. P100/night if you bring your own tent. Pwede walk-in lang. Wala naman minimum number for those staying in tents.

thank you sa info god bless..:-)

Hi Kara! Do you have any contact person who can assist us on our tour? Thanks

Hi Pat, I went to Baler as part of Journeying James Tours. You can check out their tour calendar and get in touch with them through this site: http://www.jjtoursph.com/ 🙂

how to get there if I am from santiago, Isabela? please reply. thanks po

Good day Kara, how much was your all in all cost? And whom did you contact to for reservations? It’s a really nice place I was looking for Tourist Spot and I found this page. I must consider Baler for the holy week. Thank you! God Bless!

Hello Josh, my recent visit was part of a sponsored media event and the first trip was part of a package tour, so I can’t give you an exact budget breakdown. How much you spend will depend on the activities you do, your transpo, accommodations, how big your group is, etc. You might find this DIY budget breakdown and itinerary useful.

Hi Kara! This post is very timely. We’re planning to go to Baler after Holy Week and I’m still searching for tips when I found this. 🙂 Have you seen the S.M.A.R.T. Beach House in Sabang? We’ll be staying there kasi. Is it nice? Also, if we wanna tour the historical places in Baler by bike, are we able to do it for just 1 whole day? What’s the best time to do surfing lessons? Thank you in advance! 🙂

Hi Daenielle. Didn’t notice SMART Beach in Sabang as I stayed in Costa Pacifica, but they have a website: http://www.smartbeachhouse.com/ You can check out their reviews on TripAdvisor . Except for Ermita Hill, all the historical places (Church, park, museum and Dona Aurora House) are very near each other around town and easy to bike to. Kahit half-day lang, kaya na. Surfing can be done either mornings or afternoons. It depends on the weather conditions that day.

Hi Kara, We’re planning to go to Baler this Holy Week. Hindi po kaya punuan sa Baywalk Tent City & Cottages? Meron po kaming tent na dala..Unattended kasi yung phone ng baywalk.Thanks..

Hi Denelyn, based on my experience, mabilis mapuno ang mga lugar pag Holy Week. It’s better if you reserve beforehand para sure. Here’s their Facebook Page . Please inquire directly.

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it! 🙂

Is there a place in Baler that is Pet Friendly?

Hi Allan, Costa Pacifica Hotel in Baler is pet-friendly. 🙂 Here’s their pet policy and requirements. http://www.costapacificabaler.com/pet-policy/

“Alternatively, you can take any bus which goes to Cabanatuan and than transfer to a public utility van heading for Baler at the terminal. Last trip of vans depends on numbers of passengers. Van travel time is 2.5 hours.”

Just wanna check, since I’m coming from Cabanatuan, it’s around 2.5 hours Nalang to baler? I’ve been reading around and I see some that says it’s around 3-4 hours. Hmm. Or that maybe an old post, how are the roads?

Hi, will it be best to go to Baler on December either before or after Christmas since I heard a lot of people are going there during summer break and most specially during Holy Week. Can you suggest a good and comfy but budgeted accommodation for a family of 5? Do hotels/hostel/inns there accept Philippine major credit cards?

Hi Mira, I think December before Christmas is a good time since most Pinoys are busy with Christmas preparations and parties 🙂 I’ve only stayed in Costa Pacifica and Bawyalk Tent City. The details are all listed here. I would recommend Costa Pacifica for families if you want good accommodations, since they have a nice pool and restaurant. Usually, only the bigger hotels like Costa Pacifica accept credit cards.

Good pm po.pwde po ba malaman magkno budget na need going to baler 2 lan kame .ano po mairerecommend nyong accommodation n mura at mga kainan po ..

Hi Janine, I wrote all my recommendations already in this blogpost for accommodations and restos. Pili na lang kayo. For budget breakdown, you might find this post useful.

How to get from Clark or Angel City to Baler Auora? bus.

There’s a more detailed guide to get from Clark to Baler here .

Hi we’re planning to visit Baler in Dec. I have a child who uses a wheelchair? Accessible ba yung mga tourist spot sa wheelchair ?

Hi Jo. The hotels and historic spots like museum, churches, ancestral house, etc. are accessible. The balete tree is along the highway, so pwede puntahan if you have a vehicle. There were stairs going down from the resorts to the beach in Costa Pacifica. I’m not sure if they had ramp access, but you could probably carry down wheelchair to the beach since maikli lang stairs. Ditumabo Falls requires a challenging hike through the forest, so I wouldn’t recommend that. Enjoy your trip in December! 🙂

thanks. 09952766958 number ko… thanks

Hi, this is a very informative post about Baler. You covered almost every spots and attractions! I would like to ask how long did you stay there to cover up everything? We’ll be there for the whole weekend but I think it is not enough if ever we’ll try to visit each places there.

Hi Georwyn. This was based on 2 separate trips to Baler. The first was 2 days and the second was 2.5 days (but with a whole day trip to another area of Aurora which I didn’t include here). Checked your blog and you bike, right? You can do everything in this guide in 2 days if you maximize your time. Day 1: Surfing in the morning and hike to Waterfalls in the afternoon. Day 2: Rent a bike (P150 half day or P300 whole day). Start with the Millennium Tree and then go back and just bike around town or going to Diguisit beach etc. 🙂 Or if you’re with companions, you can just hire the trike, but Baler is pretty compact and it’s very nice to bike around there. Medyo steep lang yung going to Pag-ASA weather station.

Hi! thank you so much for all the datails and information you have given me here. I like to go and travel in that place and riding my own vehicle. aside from toll gates and gas i will consume. what would be the best pocket money i can bring so that i can enjoy my vacation.

Hi Pio, it really depends on where you plan to stay, your activities and food. For a budget-friendly trip, I’d recommend about 1,000 per day. Check out this post which contains a sample budget for Baler .

hi, tanong lang sana. dalawa lang kami ng kasama ko and both kami new sa pag travel. plan namin first puntahan is baler. tanong ko lang sana kung pano kaya pwedeng gawin sa mga gamit namin habang nasa beach na pwede kaming sabay nasa tubig? pasensya na at salamat

Hi Lean, when I travel solo at walang magbabantay ng gamit, these are my options: – Swim only sa shallow area where you can still see your belongings. Minsan tinatali ko sa bangka na malapit or tinatakpan ng towel. Usually only do this kung konti lang tao. Kung maraming tao, pwedeng mawalan pa rin ng gamit. – Only bring essentials. After picture-taking, ibalik muna lahat ng gamit sa hotel room and then go swimming. Or just bring a waterproof camera.

300 ata yon for 1 hour na then meron na kayo table s ilalim noon… tapos keep on your eyes lng ang gmit… di rin kasi natin masabi eh…

hello do you have a tour package for 4pax,planning to go in baler this coming september. from bayombong nueva vizcaya to baler thank you.

Hi Myra, I don’t offer package tours. I just maintain this travel blog, where I share tips from my own trips.

I agree. This post is spot on! 😀 We went there and i tried the amazing peanut butter too.

Thanks Zerah! 🙂 Glad to know you enjoyed the place (and the peanut butter). Hehe.

i went in sabang beach last july! id say, i want to go back! ?, love the place, specialy the foods! try sisig at yellow fin bar! tinalo ang gerrys grill!

Thanks, Philip. I hope to visit Baler again this year! 🙂

It was so much fun you should go there. I rented a motorcycle in Manila 250cc through book2wheel. Only thing it took me 10 hours to drive. 250cc motorbike can not be use for express road. I had to take small street. The Google map was not help full. When I arrive it was worth it. Took me 10 hour but so much fun. There are small bars and nice places to eat food…

Small wave but fun

Sulit po ang pagod sir… balak nga rin namin bumalik dyan eh… dahil so very nice place talaga… heheheee

hi anyone knows how to commute from Santiago, Isabela to Dinadiawan? thanks!

I’d like to know din po… from cagayan p kxe.

This post of yours makes me wanna go there again ughhh.

Around the District: A Busy Day in Southern Nevada

As a community-engaged bank, the SF Fed seeks out  real-time information on economic conditions  by engaging with and learning from businesses, community organizations, and local leaders. These conversations are one of the many inputs into the decisions and policymaking at the Federal Reserve as we pursue  our mission .

Here’s a snapshot of a recent outreach visit to Southern Nevada from Qiana Charles, Regional Executive of the SF Fed’s Los Angeles branch.

Earlier this month, I had the chance to visit Southern Nevada with my SF Fed colleagues. As a Regional Executive, I love public engagement visits like these. I get to spend time up close and personal with our communities and build meaningful and trusted relationships throughout the expansive and diverse Twelfth District. The conversations I have shine a light on the fantastic things happening throughout the District that support the broader regional and national economies. What I and my colleagues learn is an important input into the SF Fed’s monetary policy decisions.

We started our morning with a workforce development roundtable, facilitated by Mary Daly and AVP of Outreach Joselyn Cousins, where we heard firsthand about the region’s workforce development needs, the opportunities, and the explosive growth of new and emerging industries like advanced and light manufacturing.

I also hosted a roundtable with economic development leaders from Clark County, Las Vegas, Henderson, and the Governor’s Office. President Daly and I learned more about what the future of growth looks like for Southern Nevada and perspectives on generative artificial intelligence in the region.

To close out our busy, engaging day, the team visited Allegiant Stadium, home to the Las Vegas Raiders and host of this year’s Super Bowl LVII. The stadium is one of the top-grossing stadiums in the United States. During the tour, we learned about consumer and ticket demand, the labor force, and what it takes to effectively run a state-of-the-art and world-class entertainment venue.

A special thank you to SF Fed Regional Engagement Officer Deborah Campbell for her leadership and engagement!

Goodbye pocket Wi-Fi: Shared data roaming is the new travel essential you need on your next trip

Nowadays, a reliable internet connection is essential when traveling abroad, as it enables you to get a ride from the airport to your accommodation, use maps, communicate (plus bargain!) with locals using translation apps, and so much more.

But with the several options out there, how do you choose the best way to be connected? While pocket Wi-Fis and international SIM cards are common options, savvy travelers are now beginning to opt for roaming services. Here are some reasons why roaming services are the better choice, especially Globe’s latest offering: Roam Surf4All, the first and only one of its kind in the market today.

It lets you do your thing, alone or together

Pocket Wi-Fi users are familiar with having to stick together – or else they will lose their internet connection. Unless there are two or more pocket Wi-Fis, it’s difficult to split into groups or go on solo adventures.

But that wouldn’t be a problem with a data roaming service, especially with Globe’s Roam Surf4All’s latest innovation. This new offering lets you share your data roaming service with your travel buddies without staying close. If some of you want to go shopping, while others prefer indulging in food crawls or perhaps taking time for themselves, you can split up and pursue your own itineraries with ease.

It lets you access and enjoy more online services

Since the network bandwidth is not shared, you can enjoy up to 5G speeds abroad with roaming services versus the slower speeds of a shared pocket Wi-Fi. You also won’t experience daily connection slowdowns and browse at normal speeds (as long as you have sufficient GBs).

There will also be no need to restrict your usage. Whether you want to browse social media, share unlimited content, or keep up with your favorite dramas online, you can do so without worries about compromising the connection of your travel buddies.

It’s more convenient, secure, and reliable

There are so many things you need to do when traveling abroad – booking flights and accommodations, applying for visas, booking tours, buying tickets to attractions, and so on.

When you get to your destination, picking up local SIM cards or a pocket Wi-Fis at late hours can be an extra hassle. Not to mention that pocket Wi-Fi providers might ask for a security deposit before handing over the device. You also can’t afford to leave it to chance and rely on public Wi-Fi, which risks endangering your personal and financial information. Save yourself from the trauma of getting hacked in a foreign country!

But if you just choose to use your data roaming services, all you have to do is register to the Roam Surf4All promo and turn on your mobile data and data roaming once you land in your destination. And since your SIM is active, you have no problem receiving OTPs and activating promos.

Once you arrive at the airport of your destination, you can relax and have your first authentic meal instead. When it’s time to leave, you don’t need to allocate extra time in the airport to return it, too (and worry about not getting back your security deposit if you lose your rented pocket Wi-Fi device.)

It lets you save and protects you from bill shock

People used to think data roaming services would result in bill shock. But that’s not the case. There are promos with fixed charges that you can subscribe to so you know exactly what you need to pay for, just like Globe’s Roam Surf4All.

Since these subscriptions are shareable, you can split the cost with the people you’re traveling with, making it all the more affordable. You can also set a data limit per member, allowing you to stay within the data allocation, monitor each member’s usage, and add or remove a member anytime through the GlobeOne app.

Globe’s Roam Surf4All promos start at P2,599 for 5 GB worth of data for five days for up to five users. That’s only P104 per person per day. For group travelers who will have longer stays, there’s also a RoamSurf4All plan P5,499 for 10 GB that can last for 15 days for only P73 per person for a day and a RoamSurf4All plan P7499 for 12 GB that can last for 30 days for only P50 per person per day.  Check out the graphic below for the other promos:

Getting started with Roam Surf4All is simple. To register:

  • Access the GlobeOne app
  • Click Buy Promos
  • Click More Promos Abroad
  • Look for the Roam Surf4All promo you prefer

Once successfully registered to the promo, you can manage your data and add up to four Globe/TM members!

Easily add members to your group data:

  • Click “Add Member” in the group data dashboard
  • Click the Phonebook icon to choose from the contact list or manually type in the number of the member
  • Once added, both owner and member will be notified

Upon arrival abroad, members can just turn on their Mobile Data and Data Roaming to start browsing. Do remember that the promo validity of Roam Surf4All starts upon registration.

baler trip blog

I used to be one of those Globe postpaid subscribers slash bill shock believers but after having tried the data roaming service while I was traveling in Europe and Japan, my perception has changed. It’s indeed an easier way to be connected, since Globe has worldwide coverage in over 100 countries, making it ideal for cross-country trips.

Just register for one RoamSurf4All promo and you’ll be able to use it with any Roam Surf partner. No need to worry about losing connection or connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi during layovers or wherever you are.

My subscription was also just charged along with my monthly postpaid bill so it was convenient to settle after coming home from my trip.

Stay connected wherever you go with Globe’s Roam Surf4All – available for Globe Postpaid, Prepaid, and TM subscribers. For Prepaid and TM users, Roam Surf4All is available on both GCash and GlobeOne. – Rappler.com
