The only way you can swim with the dolphins in Bali is by taking a sunrise boat tour that departs from Lovina, a small town on Bali’s Northern Shore. Lovina has capitalized on its natural dolphin population and every morning dozens of tourist boats depart to watch pods of dolphins embark on their morning feeding migration – The only word to describe watching these dolphin migrations is  magical .

To get there, you can arrange a tour that includes a private driver or rent a scooter and drive yourself. 📍 Where is Lovina Located? Lovina is located on Bali’s northernmost shore, around a 3.5-4-hour drive from central Bali. ⏰ Time: All dolphin tours are for sunrise, and boats set off at 5 AM – So most Lovina tours are 2-day/1-night. 💰 Cost: You can take an ultra-cheap group tour for as little as $10 per person, or a private boat tour that includes transportation to/from Lovina for $50 per person.

All About Swimming With The Dolphins In Bali 

Swimming with the wild dolphins is hands down the BEST thing I have done on Bali mainland. Positioned on Bali’s North Shore, Lovina still has untouched-paradise vibes, which is a welcome change from the much over-touristed Southern Bali beaches. In typical unhinged Bali fashion, you’re not just watching the dolphins from above the water, but the locals have rigged swings to the sides of all of the fishing boats that take tourists out. From the swing, you get to dunk your head under the water and watch the pods of dolphins as they swim and play – It’s honestly an insane experience. 

The North Shore is the only place in Bali where you can see dolphins in their natural habitat – All over Bali, you might see “dolphin tours” advertised, but they’re always taking you to Lovina . Due to the remote location of Lovina, all the way on Bali’s north shore, going on a dolphin-watching tour is touristy but in no way the tourist circus some southern locations, like the Ubud Monkey Forest, has become. 

That being said, if you want to make sure you have the best time possible on your Lovina Dolphin Watching tour, you really  have  to take a private boat. If you take a private tour they will put in a little bit more effort to go off on their own, away from the main group.  I don’t usually advocate for private tours – In fact, I think group tours are a great way to meet people while traveling, but the dolphin tour in Lovina is an exception! Every morning dozens of tourist boats set off, and 90% of them all follow the same pod of dolphins – This isn’t good for the tourists, or the dolphins, to crowd the animals like that. It doesn’t cost much to upgrade from a group tour to a private boat, in fact, the price of things ranging from meals to tours, and hotels, in Lovina is downright reasonable compared to Southern Bali. 

💰 Cost of Hiring A Boat: For the ultra-budget group tours, you can snag a spot for around $10. If you hail a boat from the beach, you might be able to get a private boat for as little as $30 per person, (but no guarantee what kind of quality you’ll get), and the nicest tours, like the one I linked in this post, are around $50-$70 and include AC car transfer from anywhere in Bali.

You really need to take a private tour to see the dolphins in Lovina – The tour I’m linking includes transport from anywhere in Bali, a private tour in Lovina, and the option to add on Aling Aling Waterfall. 

How To Get To Lovina – The North Shore of Bali

🛵 via scooter .

We drove scooters to Lovina from Kuta, it said the drive would be less than 3 hours, but typical of Bali overland travel, this was an extremely “optimistic” estimation. In reality, it was more like 5 – not including the problems we encountered like bad weather and having one of our scooters break down. After we made it past two hours of snaking through Kuta and Denpasar’s insane traffic, we had to deal with the ascent through the mountainous region of Munduk. I was happy I had insisted on taking individual scooters for this part because it was pretty much over an hour of driving straight up into the mountains. As it got colder, and later in the day, the engine on my friend’s scooter overheated and we had to abandon it (not the best move!), so we could make it to Lovina that night. 

The scooter wound up being reported as abandoned by the local government, and we went through a magical adventure through Bali’s bureaucracy to get it back. Getting our scooter back from the local gov in Munduk took like, 5 hours, no joke, so then we found ourselves driving in the dark, rain, and fog through the freezing mountainous region of Bali – it’s always an adventure! The moral of the story is don’t take driving scooters over long distances in Bali lightly, it feels like something always goes wrong 😂.

🚗 Via Private Driver & Tour

If you care about your comfort at all, you’ll want to take a car to Lovina instead of a scooter. This is because you have to drive through the Munduk mountainous region to get there, and it’s FREEZING up there (!!!) . You can hire a private driver in Bali to take you to Lovina and go on a tour of North Bali on the way there, this is the smartest use of your time. 

👉 Note: Grab/Gojek (the  main taxi apps in Bali ) don’t work with long distances, so you’ll have to arrange a driver independently. 

Perfect 2-Day North Bali & Lovina Itinerary 

Day 1 – Drive to Lovina 

• 8 AM – Depart for Lovina 

Jatiluweh Rice Terraces 

Leke leke waterfall .

• Late Lunch at Munduk Twin Lakes Viewpoint

My Top Tips For Swimming With The Dolphins In Bali At Lovina Beach 

✅ take a private tour .

I don’t usually recommend private tours, and I’m aware that many people coming to Bali are young travelers on a budget – However, you really NEED to upgrade to the private tour to see the Dolphins in Lovina.  Trust me on this.  If there’s nothing else you take from this article – take the private tour!  The reason it’s so important to take a private tour to see the Dolphins in Lovina is two-fold: 1) The group tours all go together, when you set out you’ll see a mass of tourist boats chasing the dolphin pods (which is bad for the animals!), and 2) There are only two swings per boat, and you’re not gonna want to take turns!

Yes, you can see the dolphins on the deck of the boat when they jump out of the water, but in our 4-hour+ tour, we only saw the dolphins jump around 2 times. The way to  really  see the Dolphins in Lovina is by hanging off the swing on the side of the boat, and there are only two swings per boat. Because these are wild animals, we weren’t always with the dolphins – In fact, I’d say the first hour or so of our tour was our boat driver trying to find the dolphins, but then once we did we had about a good half-hour in the water with them.

✅ Know You Need Some Grip Strength for the Swing 

It wasn’t difficult per se, to stay on the swing as the boat was moving – I was actually able to do it with one hand! (Because I was using my other hand to take GoPro photos for this article!). But you do need some grip strength. The swings are used while the boat is moving, this surprised some people – the reason for this is because the dolphins are always moving on their morning feeding migration, so the boat has to be too! 

Are Lovina Dolphin Watching Tours Ethical? 

It can be argued that no animal-encounter tour is truly ethical. There are some things I’ve done in Bali, like swimming with the Whale Sharks in Komodo National Park , where they were feeding the animals, and that always makes you think of the ethics of the activity you are participating in. Swimming with the dolphins at Lovina Beach on a dolphin-watching tour occupies a grey area, in my personal opinion.

The dolphins at Lovina are neither caged nor fed, and instead, tourists are observing their natural daily migrations to their food source in the wild. Are the animals caged, harmed, or controlled in any sort of way? No, these are natural animal encounters in their environment. Do people kinda annoy these wild animals while they’re going about their business? Yeah, probably – You’re not actively harming these animals in any way, but you are intruding into their environment. 

The question of ethics becomes more complicated though when you factor into the equation that dolphin tourism is pretty much the main economy in Lovina for the locals. I think taking a private dolphin tour that branched off from the big crowd (spreading out the tourism is important), didn’t stress the animals out too much. I’ve read that dolphins are social animals, but I’m not in any way a marine biologist or dolphin expert. In the end, What you’re comfortable with is a personal decision.

• Cafe Greco:  Some of the best Western Food we had in North Bali! They made fantastic coffees as well. 
• Warung Ayu:  FANTASTIC Indonesian food at really reasonable prices. 

🏨 Where To Stay 

• $$$ Luxury – The Lovina Bali Resort:   Hands-down the nicest resort in Lovina, 4-stars and located directly on the beach. 
• $$ Budget – Grand Raka Homestay:  This affordable hotel is right next to the beach, all rooms have AC, Netflix, Wifi, etc. 
• $ Hostel – Lovina Central Hostel:   Lovina doesn’t have a huge backpacker scene because it’s tiny, but this is the most popular hostel in the area. 

Other Amazing Things To Do Near Lovina 

I love Aling Aling Waterfall! It’s actually a complex of several waterfalls, with the largest and most impressive being Aling Aling. What sets Aling Aling Waterfall complex apart from most of the waterfalls in Bali is how interactive it is. The waterfall itself is easy to get to (especially by Bali standards), at a less than 10-minute walk from the parking lot, but what’s exciting about this waterfall is the numerous cliff jumps, swings, and  natural waterslides  you can enjoy there. 

That’s right. Aling Aling has NATURAL WATERSLIDES. Bali is so amazing, there are so many hidden gems like Aling Aling waterfall that I had never even heard about before.  At Aling Aling there’s a 5, 10, and 15-meter cliff jump (I was too chicken to do anything past the 5-meter!), and a waterfall that a guide will help you slide down. I have no idea who first figured out, that you can (safely) slide down this waterfall, but I’m happy they did! It’s one of the most insane things I’ve done in Bali. 

Sekumpul Waterfall 

I’m mentioning this in the guide but in a “maybe don’t visit” kinda way 😅. Sekumpul is one of the main waterfalls in Bali, but over the past year, it has started to become run by a local mafia. “Mafia run” sounds scary, but it’s actually pretty typical for attractions in Bali to start operating as a scam – Other notable instances of this are  Wae Rebo in Flores  and the  Balinese taxi mafia  that operates all over the island. At Sekumpul now the mafia is harassing tourists to use an overpriced guide – it’s sad! I recommend going to Aling Aling instead. 

Many travelers coming to Bali are disappointed by the rice terraces – This is because they go to the ultra-touristy Tegalalang terraces north of Ubud. If you want to experience the rice terraces and nature in Bali the way they were intended, I recommend making the trip to Jatiluweh!

Leke Leke Waterfall is the most photogenic in all of Bali – It’s only a 15-minute hike from the parking area to the base of the falls, so Leke Leke is also a convenient addition to most North Bali itineraries. 

Handara Gate 

Handara Gate is the smaller (and less touristy) iconic photo gate in Bali, the other one is the Instagram-famous “Gates of Heaven” which frequently boats over one-hour wait times for a photo  (!!!! ). 

Ulun Danu Temple 

Ulun Danu Water Temple is a bit of a tourist trap in my opinion, but plenty of people seem to enjoy it heaps so I figured I should include it in my round-up of North Bali attractions. The thing I’m not too keen on about Ulun Danu is that it’s really just a photo spot, the temple is “floating”, which means you can’t go to it. 

Banjar Hot Springs 

Banjar Hot Springs is about 20-to 30-minute drive from Lovina Beach, we didn’t go because we felt it was hot enough when we visited, but it’s a very cool (and less-touristy) natural hot spring with Balinese architecture you can easily add into any Lovina itinerary. 

Munduk Viewpoint 

Munduk is certainly something special. This high mountainous region in Bali is famous for its  Balinese coffee plantations , due to the fertile volcanic soil. You’ll have to drive through Munduk to get from regions of South & Central Bali (Kuta, Canggu, Uluwatu, Ubud) to Lovina, so might as well stop and check it out! We had lunch at one of the cafes lining the Munduk Twin Lakes viewpoint on the way back from Lovina and it was  gorgeous.

The best place to see dolphins in Bali is in Lovina Bay located on the north coast of Bali. If you take a dolphin boat trip in Lovina you are almost guaranteed to see dolphins – and will probably see many creatures quite close. There are hundreds of dolphins frequenting Lovina bay and they are normally divided into 4 or 5 pods. Dolphin pods are not rigid – they sometimes merge into larger groups or split into smaller groups. An experienced guide can normally predict the dolphin movements around the bay and allow you to get close without overcrowding the dolphins.

What are Lovina Dolphin tours like?

In brief: Take a small boat around the coast of Lovina following pods of dolphins. Watch the dolphins swim and play in the water. Later you can jump in. Most boats have a hanging bar to hold onto so they can pull you along – allowing you to watch the dolphins swimming underwater! Keep your eye open for amazing flying fish in the bay too!

Dolphin watching tours are amazing and definitely worthwhile. You can see dolphins swimming and jumping, generally pretty close. Many boats have bars to hang off so you can watch dolphins swimming, jumping and diving under the water. If you’re in the water for a while and listen carefully you can also hear dolphins communicate with beautiful high pitch whilst like sounds. 

Some people have the wrong expectations and find the Dolphin trips disappointing. If you’re expecting a quiet, tranquil and serene experience with no one else around, then this is not the best thing for you. Dolphin watching is one of the most popular activities in the north of Bali. 

TOP TIP: Expect to see lots of other boats and people enjoying this unique experience too. Sunrise is the busiest time. Things get quieter later. If you are wanting to get away from the crowds, ask your boat driver if they can go further out in the bay. Pods can often be seen swimming several kilometers out into the bay and it is much quieter here.

Although you might get a distant glimpse of dolphins from the coast of Lovina (if you’re really lucky), this is not likely to be a memorable experience. The only way to see dolphins up close is to book a boat tour from Lovina. You can either book your trip in advance online or book with a local tour operator in Bali. 

1 Book in advance online

The cheapest way to book a tour to see dolphins in Bali is to book online in advance. You can book shared dolphin tours on Klook for around $5. This is impressively cheap! Shared tours may not include things like breakfast and drinks so make sure you bring some food and drinks on the boat with you. If you book your tour on Klook it should also include snorkeling. Life jacket, mask and find should be provided. 

2 Book a private dolphin tour directly 

Another way to book your dolphin tour is contact an operator directly. We were very impressed with Lovina Dolphin Holiday (The Flying Fish). For a private trip they charge 300,000IDR per person (around £16) including sunrise dolphin watching, breakfast, drinks, dolphin swimming, snorkeling and snorkeling kit. Tour details vary so this is just to give you a rough idea of what to expect. Be aware the dolphin tours can be canceled during bad weather. Most boat operators use Whatsapp to communicate with you about meeting times, places and cancellation (where relevant). Download whatsapp and swap numbers to get details of your boat trip. 

5.30am – 6am Meet your boat guide in Lovina. Many dolphin watching tours meet near the Dolphin statue on Lovina beach (check exact meeting times and places with your driver). If you’re not doing a sunrise tour you may meet later. 

6am – 8am Watch the sunrise and see dolphins swim and play in the bay. This part of the trip you need to remain on the boat. Follow dolphin pods around the bay. Take photos and relax on the boat.

8am Breakfast on the boat (depending on whether it is included in your trip)

8am – 10am Swim with dolphins. There is normally a bar on the boat to hang off allowing you to follow dolphin pods. 

10am – 11am Snorkeling around some shallow reef (watch out for strong currents here). There are also some underwater sea sculptures around the reef. Ask your guide to show you where to go. 

12pm Return to Lovina bay. Plan a relaxed afternoon.

What do dolphin watching tours in Bali normally include?

Transport to and from the meeting point is generally not included. We recommend finding a good hotel in Lovina close to the beach.These things are normally included in your trip (check when you book):

• A change of clothing
• Sandals or flip flops are ideal (you may need to paddle to your boat)
• Dry sack is recommended for valuables but not essential

Therefore being located close to Lovina beach means that you can sleep as long as possible before your tour – the more rest the better as this is a big day. Also, Lovina is a very beautiful area to stay. There are plenty of hotels and guest houses in the area and this is a less crowded and busy area of barley. So if you are hoping to escape the crowds then take a few days in Lovina.  

1 Murni’s Guest House

Cheap, simple and comfortable. Murni’s guest house is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a good budget option. They only have double rooms available. Rooms are private, en suite and have A.C. Around 0.5km (5 – 10 minute walk) from the Dolphin Tour meeting location (Lovina Beach dolphin statue). £10 – £20 per night.

2 Binaria Museum Hotel

Boutique, retro, vintage and packed with character. This charming hotel has an outdoor pool, gardens, breakfasts and an onsite restaurant. Rooms are super stylish and pretty comfortable too. Welcome To My Website

Hi, my name is Erik Suriadi . I am from Singaraja and my tourist agency is located in Lovina. I have assisted hundreds of tourists during their stay in Bali and I think the best way to visit and learn about a country is through the eyes of a local tour guide.

Trust, fun, calm and friendly are the heart of my personality. My approach is simple and warm. I always enjoy getting to know you, hear about your stories, trips and experiences. Meeting people from all around the world fascinates me and living things those adventure together make it all the more enjoyable.

Each day, I have the chance to share precious and unique moments with my clients. Seeing the expression on their face when they first see a dolphin jumping right next to them is precious. Creating a calm and relaxed atmosphere is paramount to me.

I am here to accompany my clients from beginning to end and give them a memorable experience. I always take care to incorporate a dose of humor, positive energy and complicity in my tours. I have at heart your complete satisfaction during your stay in Lovina.

Who are we?

Bali Exotic Marine Park is an independent organisation dedicated to protecting marine life. Boasting Indonesia’s largest saltwater habitat, we are ready to care for the animals entrusted to us. We also donate to animal rescue foundations and offer charity therapy programs for disabled people. BEMP will contribute back to society through our intricate research, education and conservation programs.

Animal Rescue

BEMP operates animal rescue operations and conducts medical checks on rescued animals.

Eco Tourism

We contribute to the local economy and fund our research and rescue programs through eco-tourism.

Our interactive education programmes will give the knowledge we have gained back to the society.

BEMP conducts and supports research projects on topics relating to marine ecosystem and biology.

The focus of our Marine Park is to educate people about their environmental responsibility, provide dolphin assisted therapy for the stressed and handicapped and we provide shelter and medical treatment for rescued dolphins.

A 32 x 32 meter salt water pool and a additional separate quarantine pool attached to state of the art filter systems provide a comfortable environment for dolphins who are not able to survive in the wild anymore because of various indications.

Can everyone participate in our internship and education programs?

Basically yes. The internship program is mainly aimed at international students studying in the therapeutic or veterinary field. But all applications from interested parties will be considered.

What are the rules & regulations to swim with our dolphins?

Please follow at all time instructions of our customer service staff and dolphin trainers. Remain seated till our customer service announces the start of your dolphin interaction program. Swim- respective life wests are mandatory. Minimum age 2years. Kids below age 12 need to be accompanied by parent. Do not touch nor feed the dolphins without request of our trainers. Please do not touch the blow hole on the head of the dolphin.

Am I and my kids save in the pool interacting with the dolphins?

Our dolphins are perfectly trained to interact with humans. They are very friendly and love to interact with our guest. Our dolphins are curious and playful animals, but in no way dangerous. During your interaction program is always a dolphin trainer present to guide the dolphin and monitor his behavior. Please follow at all times the instructions of our trainers.
