The Pretty Little Liars star recently channeled the iconic Mattel doll at the Greta Gerwig-helmed film’s Los Angeles premiere. Styled by Shalev Lavàn , the 36-year-old actress and producer wore a black and white off-the-shoulder dress with a sculptural peplum by Shushu Tong and paired it with a mini Amina Muaddi bag and Sophia Webster heels.

The seven-piece Barbie range comes on the heels of Béis’ newest L.A. pop-up shop on Venice’s famed Abbot Kinney. (The brand made its brick-and-mortar debut at The Grove in May 2022.)

In a campaign lensed by photographer Greg Swales, Mitchell taps into her inner Barbie alongside a bright pink sports car in front of a very DreamHouse-esque mansion, to name a few stylish scenes.

Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken,  Barbie  follows the iconic pink-loving protagonist as she faces an existential crisis and leaves Barbie Land (in her pink Chevrolet Corvette convertible, no less!) for the Real World. Co-written by Gerwig and partner Noah Baumbach, the romantic comedy also stars Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Ritu Arya, Michael Cera and Emerald Fennell as Mattel dolls in the flesh and America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell and others as humans.

Even Béis founder Shay Mitchell is having trouble getting her hands on the travel brand's Barbie x Béis luggage collab that sold out in 23 minutes when it launched last month.

"To be honest with you, I have the roller and I have to give it up. I promised my little cousin I would give it to her," she grins, sitting on a couch at Showfields department store in NoHo, where she's celebrating the bestselling Barbie collection. “We ordered double the amount we usually order for a drop, and we sold out [immediately]. I'm like a proud mom. It's fun, but I'm annoyed because I want everybody to have the opportunity to get it.”

Luckily for everyone who wants to travel like Barbie, Béis announced a rare restock. “Second chances aren’t just for the movies. Our Barbie™ pink collection sold out fast, so we’re doing something a little unconventional…” the brand announced on July 24. For a limited time, the Barbie collection is [available for pre-order] and will ship in early 2024. And if you're in need of something quicker, you can check out our list of the best suitcases on Amazon (guaranteed to arrive in two days with a Prime membership).

It's a major moment for Béis, which is nearing its five-year anniversary. “We did our first-ever soft launch of Béis in New York [five years ago], and it's full circle now. It's weird. It's awesome … I'm enjoying so much, and I'm learning every single day,” Mitchell says. For the Barbie collaboration, she adds, “We didn't have that long of a lead time to create a bunch of new different styles. I was like, okay, let's make a bunch of our bestsellers, things we know people are going to love, in this color.”

To promote the new collection, Mitchell even stepped into Barbie's high-heeled shoes for a promo video. “When we were talking about it, we were like, okay, who are we casting for this, how many models. I was like, well guys, I'll, you know, be in the shoot,” she laughs. “If you need me, I can do the shoot. I was like, that'd be fun to wear pink and do the little shoe thing. It wasn't perfect, but I wasn't mad at it."

Barbie pink luggage and makeup pieces

Mitchell is excited to see how students and young people might style some forthcoming Béis products for back-to-school season (we've got a list of cute backpacks , too), including the upcoming Commuter collection. She showed off one of the backpacks, made with a sleeker type of nylon and features hidden pockets for water bottles and other accessories.

Mitchell also shared with us advice she'd give to her middle and high school self in developing a unique sense of personal style. “Have fun with it, don't take it too serious," she says. “Wear what you feel comfortable in, not what society and trends are telling you to do. It's cool to kind of go the opposite stream. New York is such a good example of that; the street style is one of the best because people are so true to who they are and wear what they feel comfortable with and don't just follow what everybody else is doing.”

When the latest Barbie restock is out, expect it to be truly out — but Mitchell has more fun planned for the future. “We want to keep creating newness for people,” she says. “Of course, we have our core moments, but for us, these are hit moments — and when they're out, they're out, and we move onto the next thing. I recognize that pink is here to stay, Barbie or no Barbie.”

The travel accessories brand, founded by Shay Mitchell, is slated to offer a number of luggage, travel bags and accessories  inspired by the film in Barbie’s signature pink colorway.

The range includes the Mini Weekender, The Rollers, The Cosmetic Case, The Travel Wallet and The Passport and Luggage Tag Set; all inspired by the beloved doll’s pink plastic world.

Mitchell, who is widely known for her acting roles in ABC’s “Pretty Little Liars” and Prime Video’s “Something from Tiffany’s,” talked to WWD in 2019 about building Béis.

“I’d be on the road, on a plane, on a train, car, wherever, in motion. I looked up these pieces to see if they existed and they didn’t. If they did, they weren’t to my style aesthetic. That’s when I started drawing. I’d be on planes heading to different jobs, and I’d be drawing on plane paper napkins. And that’s how it started,” WWD reported she said in September 2019.

In 2022, celebrating the brand’s fourth anniversary, Béis launched its first design collaboration with former Victoria’s Secret Angel Elsa Hosk.

Prices for the Béis x “Barbie” collection range from $48 to $328. Beginning July 19, ahead of the “Barbie” release on July 21, the collection will be available for purchase at www.beistravel.com.

This Barbie is ready for vacation.

Béis became the latest brand to put a “Barbie” pink spin on its signature styles Thursday, teaming up with the movie on a brightly hued collaboration.

The buzzy bag collection includes six hot pink suitcases, duffles and wallets, all ranging in price from $48 to $328.

Founder Shay Mitchell has been getting into the “Barbie” spirit for weeks leading up to the launch, from attending the movie’s LA premiere to cosplaying the iconic Mattel doll in a campaign for the range.

The “Pretty Little Liars” star even sported a platinum blond ‘do for the video, which sees her toting the bags in a matching pink convertible.

Among the eye-catching assortment? A neon take on the Carry-On Roller ($248), a design Hailey Bieber once called the “best suitcase in the world” on Instagram Stories.

The “Barbie” version of the Mini Weekender ($118) also nods to the doll’s signature shade both inside and out, thanks to the additions of a pink floral lining and a glossy removable bottom compartment.

For smaller storage solutions, there’s also a hot pink version of the brand’s bestselling Cosmetics Case ($78) and the Travel Wallet ($54).

The Béis Bags You Need In Your Collection

What started as a desire to create functional bags for parents on the go has turned into multiple best-selling luggage collections and a Barbie collaboration that sold out within minutes. You can't walk through the airport without seeing the eye-catching, signature beige luggage. Actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell founded Bèis in 2018 and has been seeing viral success since its first drop.

My introduction to the Béis universe was similar to the rest of the world—through the popular Weekender Bag . I immediately thought it was chic with its neutral hues and could just imagine how sturdy the canvas material must be, but I wasn’t sold on it yet. I was in the market for a full luggage set and wanted an upgrade from stand-alone pieces. At the time, she had only released the duffel , weekender , dopp kit , cosmetic case , luggage tag, and passport holder .

When you buy one travel essential from Béis, you'll quickly feel the urge to buy more. The suitcases and bags work well together and look so polished. The laptop sleeves have a special buckle that can be attached to your carry-on and the backpacks and duffels have convenient trolley sleeves that make dashing through the airport easy. These smart features help ease some of the stress of traveling and limit the amount of items you’re carrying so you're not weighed down. Speaking of being weighed down, Béis suitcases feature a weight indicator that let you know whether or not your bag is overweight before you get to the airport (and before you face any extra fees). Our editors took some of the brand's most talked-about luggage on the road to determine the best of Béis. We considered each bag's weight, capacity, functionality, and overall design. From hard shell checked suitcases to soft-sided carry-ons , here are our top luggage picks from Béis.

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler’s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

I was worried that the Béis carry-on would be overstuffed with a week’s worth of clothes for two people, but I managed to fit everything I needed. When you first open the carry-on you’re met with two garment bags that are ideal for holding dirty laundry or damp clothing. The right side features a detachable side panel that has mesh pockets for extra security, while the left side has two zippered pockets that are perfect for your toiletries. On a recent flight, I had to check this carry-on at the gate when there was limited overhead space. Although dirty, it returned to us scuff-free! I would recommend this to any traveler who is an exclusive team carry-on member and might be in the market for complimentary travel bags. If you're interested in expanding your luggage collection, Béis does an excellent job of creating pieces that work well together (and look good, too).

What we love most: The garment bags and cushioned suitcase handle Dimensions: 10" x 23" x 16" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

A bag.

This weekender was Béis’s very first product and its earned a huge cult-following on social media. The interior has a water-resistant lining and multiple pockets for small travel accessories like jewelry or charging cords. The extra roomy bottom compartment can fit several pairs of shoes and keep them separated from your clean clothes. On the back, there’s a trolley sleeve so you can place the bag on top of your carry-on or check-in roller—a true game-changer when navigating through the airport.

What we love most: The laptop sleeve and separate shoe compartment Dimensions: 20" x 10" x 16" Colors available: Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

barbie beis travel

For those travelers who are working with limited storage space at home, this is the ideal carry-on for you. It can be expanded to give you extra packing room or collapsed so it can fit into smaller spaces. The exterior has a padded sleeve for your laptop, a keychain latch, and a pocket with a port to thread your cords and chargers on the go. This carry-on has been a favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , “this is a Béis bag I love. It’s so easy to store since it collapses down flat, but does fit a decent amount when expanded; I used it on a four-day trip recently and had enough space,” she says. It’s lightweight and made from durable polyester that can be spot-cleaned.

What we love most: The bag's collapsible frame and the exterior pocket with a headphone port Dimensions: 14" x 9" x 22" (not collapsed); 14" x 7" x 22" (collapsed) Colors available: Black

Travelers can stay hydrated and hands-free on the go with this water bottle sling bag —a favorite of Flager's for active days. It's a great accessory for trips where you're getting your steps in or can serve as the ultimate gym buddy. The lightweight sling can fit a 32-ounce water bottle while still offering enough room for small essentials such as your phone, keys, and ID. It comes with an adjustable strap that lets you wear it as a crossbody.

What we love most: The adjustable strap and drawstring lock closure Dimensions: 4" x 4" x 8" Colors available : Beige and black

barbie beis travel

When it comes to checked luggage , you want something that can hold enough clothes and travel essentials for a full week or longer. Associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny recently traveled with it for a nine-day trip to Italy and was surprised by its durability: "when it’s empty, this bag is durable yet isn’t too heavy—I could lift it up myself with no problem. As large as this suitcase is, I didn’t struggle to roll it around, lifting it up to be weighed at the airport, or pulling it onto a busy train,” she says. While the outside has a sleek rippled design with four smooth rolling wheels, the interior has two separate sides. One side has a detachable mesh panel with two compression straps to buckle across and the other side side can be completely zipped with two zippered pockets on top. While that might seem like plenty of space, overpackers will appreciate that the Check-In Roller can be expanded for two extra inches.

What we love most: The built-in weight indicator and TSA–approved combination lock Dimensions: 11" x 18" x 28" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

barbie beis travel

We've all been there: you forget to pack something and need to reopen your bag and do some last-minute reorganizing. One of the best features of the soft-sided carry-on is that it offers a front zip entry for easy access into the bag. For overpackers, it might be a little hard to handle through the airport, but it's an ideal option for road trips where you aren’t constantly moving it. This collapsible roller is made for longer trips where extra space is essential.

What we love most: Front-zipper access and it’s easy to store Dimensions: 19" x 13" x 32" (not collapsed); 19" x 7" x 32" (when collapsed) Colors available: Black

barbie beis travel

The Mini Weekender is very similar to its predecessor. It offers the same features you know and love, but in a smaller version. The interior has a laptop sleeve, two pockets, and a keychain latch; the exterior has a pocket on the front and a trolley sleeve. I’ve used this for a road trip where I didn't need to carry it much and a short weekend to New Jersey by train where I had to lug it around my shoulder for the duration of the trip. The handles are incredibly soft and thick, which is a must-have for any over-the-shoulder bag. While waiting in line for the bus, I didn’t find myself shifting or moving the bag around because it was surprisingly comfortable due to its size. The bag also has a long strap so you can wear the bag two ways if over-the-shoulder isn’t your vibe.

What we love most: Its versatility and adjustable strap Dimensions: 16" x 16" x 8" Colors available : Beige, black, gray, atlas pink, navy, citron, berry, plaid, creamsicle, olive, and maple

The Strategy Behind Shay Mitchell’s Travel Brand Béis

Actress Shay Mitchell sits among two olive-coloured suitcases and weekender bag from her brand Béis.

Actress, entrepreneur and executive producer Shay Mitchell launched her lifestyle and travel brand Béis in October 2018 with the vision of catering to an on-the-go lifestyle by creating bags, luggage and travel accessories she could not find in the market. In just five years, the brand is nearing $200 million in profitable gross revenue by the end of 2023.

This summer, the brand hosted a tour of pop-ups, experimenting with physical retail and in-store creative marketing moments in three North American cities and will be doing a holiday pop-up in New York with Shopify.

“We have an exceptionally high return customer rate, far higher than what is typical in our category,” Béis president, Adeela Hussain Johnson, tells BoF. “As we look to the future, we will continue to engage with our current consumers in a way that builds loyalty and trust while investing meaningfully in brand building and awareness-driving initiatives. [...] Our objectives as an organisation are to maintain the momentum of our growth trajectory, but to do so responsibly and in a way that is both sustainable and scalable, long-term.”

Since its launch, Béis has built a significant direct-to-consumer e-commerce offering, with the majority of traffic to Béis’ website primarily driven by growth within paid search, paid social and affiliate marketing, supported by Mitchell’s 37 million-strong follower base. Béis works with retail partners — Nordstrom , Revolve , Bloomingdale’s and, most recently, Canada’s Indigo — to diversify their consumer reach.

“DTC will continue to be the lion’s share of our business, as we are a digitally native brand and we intend that to continue. However, we have learned through our pop-ups in the last two years that our consumer does love IRL experiences and interacting with our brand through the brick-and-mortar channel. So, we will continue to learn and expand that channel as it makes sense for different categories within our portfolio,” adds Hussain Johnson.

The pop-up tour is one strand of the brand’s exploration of expanded marketing arenas, alongside the likes of billboard advertising and major brand partnerships, such as its collaboration with Mattel and Barbie The Movie around the launch of the Greta Gerwig blockbuster. Béis is also working with innovative materials, exploring the likes of cactus leather in its Premium Collection, which launched on November 8. Product lines have also expanded to include lines for travelling parents and their children, as well as baby and pet bags.

“We are investing significantly in R&D and testing to understand how we can continue to improve and expand our portfolio with materials that allow us to achieve durable, long-lasting products,” says Hussain Johnson. “Though the majority of our business is in our classics, which are always around, we recognise that we do drop seasonal collections and not everyone needs 10 weekenders. So, we are in the process of exploring how we can offer consumers ways to give their bags and accessories a second life.”

Now, BoF sits down with the brand’s founder Shay Mitchell to learn more about her strategic vision for the future of the brand.

How do you respond to evolving consumer needs and expectations?

We have an analytics department that gathers all data for the brand. I also gather feedback from my friends, family and my assistant. She will sit in on design meetings and I will ask her: “Would you carry this?” It may seem small but we are a consumer feedback-driven brand, so in addition to hard data, I’m always collecting my own feedback from my immediate circle to better understand how they shop.

We’re still a small enough brand to be nimble. For example, when Covid-19 hit, we had a whole line-up of suitcases that were about to be rolled out, but we paused the drop and reassessed. We make bags for people on-the-go, so with the world drastically changing, we asked ourselves “what are people still going to be doing?” They’re going to be going to markets, to parks, beaches, to the grocery store, so we designed for that. We are not just designing for long-haul, plane travel — whether you’re going on a walk, to the gym, to the grocery store or to work, we have a product for you to make it easier.

It’s also about being able to pick up on cultural moments quickly and what makes us so good at this is our team, whose eyes and ears are always open. We can quickly react to trends or feedback that are relevant, in order stay fresh in the content and product we develop.

How do you test out new category and product ideas?

We create what I call “energy drops”, which is when we try something new and share a smaller run with our consumer. It’s a way to play with ideas and collect feedback and insight from the consumer as to what it is that they like about it, what we can improve upon and what should become a core offering. It’s a nice way to test the waters without having a full-on commitment because we’re not buying heavily into those drops.

We are also starting to do more collaborations for energy drops and those projects offer learnings, too. For example, when we dropped the Barbie The Movie collaboration, some people loved the colour and others loved the glossy finish. They said, “You should do this [finish] for beige and black.” I pocketed that feedback and thought, “Cool. Now I know.”

The first time we did a collab was with the model Elsa Hosk. That process was different because we were not just offering existing bags in new fabrications but designing new bags and prints for a Baby line. It was interesting to get her perspective on what she would design. We had hits and misses on that one, but we played around with print, we played around with the fabric and we created something that Béis had never done before.

Béis founder Shay Mitchell dressed in a pink suit dress and hat, holds a pink Béis wallet standing in front of a pink convertible car, in a campaign for the Béis and Mattel 'Barbie Pink' colourway collaboration in May 2023.

How has community feedback guided your design approach?

We have a two-way conversation with our audience. I will post from design meetings and have our community weigh in on colourways or patterns. We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes. We test our bags through the design process and we continue to refine them even once they are on the market.

One of the things we have learnt is that there are people that want to pay a higher price point for a different kind of material, while others will say: “We love this bag. We just wish you could do a more basic, simpler version of it.” All of this feedback helps inform our approach. So, we have our core line, which we have had from the beginning. Then we came out with the Béis-ics, a more simplified design for a Gen-Z consumer at more of an entry price point.

We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes.

Then, this November, we dropped our Premium collection, which offers existing core bag silhouettes in cactus leather fabrications, with elevated design elements. This collection is at a new price point for us. We wanted to design with a more sustainable fabric that looks and feels more premium. I’m curious to see how it is received.

This evolution of various categories at different price points came from consumer feedback. I love the feedback our consumers share. With the help of my team, when we drop a new product, we are keeping our eyes peeled for feedback — and this feedback loop helps us learn for next time. It’s a two-way street that we really value.

Béis founder Shay Mitchell standing in the lobby-style pop up store for Béis in Los Angeles.

How has the Béis brand and your vision for it evolved?

Béis started when I drew up my ideal travel bag on a cocktail napkin while on an airplane, with all the features I had mentally taken notes of over the years, like a key leash or a strap to attach onto your suitcase. With those ideals in mind, we started with our weekenders and our luggage.

Then, when I was pregnant, I needed a diaper bag, so we came out with our baby line. We also created a backpack with a rollout changing pad because sometimes, bathroom facilities are not equipped for parents to change their kids. My elder daughter then started needing her own bags for school, so we moved into the kids’ space — but we added features that add value to the parent, because I know the parent is going to end up carrying the bag.

So, in a lot of ways, we have been (selfishly) designing products for ourselves and our evolving families, but then we go into it with the perspective that those needs can be applied to the consumer who is also looking for functional, good-looking products to make their lives easier while on-the-go. So, we have grown by expanding into new categories that have grown as we have.

What role will a physical retail presence play in growing the brand?

We are majority direct-to-consumer and, until our first pop-up, we had only partnered with Revolve and had a very small section in Nordstrom, which was important for us because I wanted people to be able to touch and feel the product. However, with wholesale accounts, I’m not in control of that retail experience and that’s the part that has been missing for me.

I want our consumers to see how the products live in a room, because if you see it in a store, there’s no lifestyle there. The pop-ups are important because we can create an experience. They allow us to play around, to try something new, to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s not forever; it’s not a commitment.

One day, when we do go into brick and mortar, there will have been a lot of research into where we do it and how we do it. But for right now, I’m having so much fun just doing these timely hits. As a matter of fact, we are currently planning a pop-up with Shopify in New York at the end of November into early December.

What is next for Béis?

I want to be that go-to brand where consumers think, “That’s the place where I go to get what I need to make on-the-go life easier.” Just like how there are certain stores that, if I’m going camping, I know to hit up this specific place and they will have everything I need.

I’m creating bags and accessories to help whenever you leave the house. But I want to make that easier for you. Every single product is thought out. The sky has no limits.

This is a sponsored feature paid for by Béis as part of a BoF partnership.

Shay Mitchell is reaching new heights this year — both literally and figuratively, as the jet-setting actress, mother and entrepreneur is celebrating her luggage brand Béis’ fifth anniversary.

One of those moments came in the form of Béis collaboration with the “Barbie” movie , which premiered in theaters on July 21. The Margot Robbie-led film teamed up with Mitchell on a line of bright “ Barbie pink” luggage — which sold out six of its seven pieces in 23 minutes. The collection also went viral from Mitchell herself, who starred as Barbie in its all-pink campaign — complete with a blonde wig and numerous pink high heels.

“I didn’t even get one,” Mitchell exclaimed of the line. “We got to do whatever we wanted, and that’s a great thing with Béis — I don’t have to ask anybody about what I can or can’t do on these photo shoots! So, we really get to play with it, and it just makes it so much fun when you let a bunch of creatives do what they do best — and that’s what that photo shoot was.”

As she begins her summer schedule with various stops across the country for Béis, Mitchell is also keeping packing top of mind — particularly when it comes to her footwear, which she advises to keep in shoe bags to avoid cross-contamination.

Mitchell’s also looking towards the future as a working mother, as she currently has two young daughters. The “Pretty Little Liars” took a moment during the party to additionally share her go-to advice for parents, based on her own experience.

“Have a checklist,” Mitchell shares. “I have a little sheet that I check off with all the different items. I’ll go through that, and I have different ones for, like, diaper bag, airplane bag, stroller, just so I make sure that I don’t forget something — but at the end of the day, if you do forget something, it’s not the end of the world.”

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).
