History and description

Estadio Azteca was built in the 1960s to accommodate the growing support of Club America and to provide Mexico with a flagship venue for the upcoming 1970 World Cup.

Estadio Azteca got designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez after a careful study of the most famous European stadiums of that time. Construction of the stadium, which took a total of 4 years, was not easy due to the hard volcanic rock the land consisted of.

Estadio Azteca officially opened on 29 May 1966 with a friendly match between America and Italian side Torino (2-2).

During the 1970 World Cup, it hosted a total of 10 matches, among which a semi-final and the final between Brazil and Italy (4-1).

Sixteen years later, Estadio Azteca again hosted a World Cup final, and until 2014 it had been the only stadium to host two World Cup finals (now sharing the honour with Maracana ).

The stadium had received a small refurbishment before the start of the World Cup, and went on to host 9 matches, among which the famous quarter-final between Argentina and England (2-1), a semi-final, and the final between Argentina and Germany (3-2).

In the following decades, safety measures brought back capacity from 115,000 in 1986 to around 100,000 in the 2000s. In 2016, the stadium underwent a large refurbishment including the addition of VIP facilities, which reduced capacity to 84,000 seats.

In 2018, Cruz Azul moved back into Estadio Azteca, having also had it as its home in the 70s and 80s, leaving Estadio Azul .

The stadium is also a regular playing venue for the Mexican national team, and for years was the home of Necaxa before they moved to Aguacalientes.

How to get to Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca is located in the south of Mexico City, about 15 kilometres from the historic city centre.

The stadium is easy to reach by metro and the connecting light rail . First take metro line 2 (which crosses the city’s historic centre) to its final stop Tasqueña, and then transfer to the light rail (tren ligero), which has a similar look as the metro, but for which a separate ticket is required. Get off at stop Estadio Azteca.

If arriving by car, the stadium can be reached by driving all the way south over the large Avenida Tlalpan (which originates in the historic centre). Stay on the right side of the metro and light rail tracks, and the stadium will automatically show up on your right.

Alternatively, the stadium can be reached from the Anillo Pereférico ring road, which passes just south of the stadium. Take exit Estadio Azteca. There is a lot of parking at the stadium, but expect to get stuck in traffic.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca is located in a predominantly residential area, and there is little entertainment around. The area north of the stadium is a bit seedy, but there is no reason to venture there. Of course, you can always get a quesadilla outside the stadium at one of the many stalls before the match.

Hotel La Luna is a basic option close to the stadium as is Hotel Real Azteca , but these really only will appeal to those who need something close to the stadium and travel in and out.

A little further away, but still at walking distance (though you might prefer a taxi), the Fiesta Inn is a nice option. It is located next to Gran Sur shopping centre. The Holiday Inn Medica Sur is another decent option at similar distance.

There are, of course, a lot of hotels in Mexico City’s  historic centre , from where you can easily catch metro line 2. Slightly more upscale are the areas around the Avenida Reforma , including the lively  Condesa , Polanco , and Roma areas with their nightlife), which are also packed with hotels. You need an extra metro change though to get onto line 2.

Club America Tickets

Tickets for Club América matches can be bought online via Ticketmaster , at the ticket windows (taquillas) at the stadium, or through one of the Ticketmaster sales outlets .

Tickets can also be bought at the gates of the stadium on the day of the match. Due to the size of the stadium, América rarely sells out.

Prices will depend on the opponent, but for a typical league match upper tier seats tend to go for MX$ 100.00, and lower tier seats for MX$ 200.00. Prices are increased to between MX$ 200.00 and MX$ 500.00 for a few high-profile matches.

Estadio Azteca stadium tours

Estadio Azteca offers guided stadium tours that include the press room, home dressing room, players tunnel, and dugouts. The tour lasts 30 to 40 minutes.

Tours run Mondays to Fridays at every half an hour between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. There are no tours on matchdays or the day before a home match. Bookings are not required.

The tour costs MX$ 105.00 per person.

I strongly recommend it. Yes it is a bit short but the over riding factor is that it is really huge and impressive stadium with a lot of history for a relatively new stadium I would like to have see Club America play but not possible during my trip

In March 2012 we took the Estadio Azteca stadium tour. We had previously checked by phone whether it really was not necessary to make a booking, which they indeed confirmed.

The stadium was easy to reach by metro + light rail, however, as it is located in the far south of the city, it still took some time to get to the stadium. You’ll definitely need 30 to 45 minutes to get there from the historic centre, though it would be wise to calculate some more time, especially when it rains.

The entrance to the tour was somewhat unclear as it was not at the Club América-Nike store right at the entrance (as seemed logical), but on the right side of the stadium (as from the metro station).

The guards that were around were helpful enough to point us in the right direction though, and we arrived at the VisitStadium boutique just in time for the 1:00 pm tour.

After buying our ticket we were sent down to wait at a cafeteria with some food and drink options. The previous tour had just come back and seemed rather packed with about 30 people, however it turned out that we were only 6 for our tour (which was apparently rather unusual based on the reaction of our guide).

The guide was a rather young bloke, probably a student, but very friendly and could answer most questions. He seemed a tad nervous though, so it may have been one of his first days on the job.

The tour started with a walk outside the stadium, then turned inside through the marathon tunnel, passed by the press room (located in the tunnel), went into the América dressing room, and continued through the players tunnel to the pitch.

Then there was some time on the edge of the pitch to take photos (of course no stepping onto the pitch allowed), and have your photo taken by the guide (which he printed out for free later). Then finally we walked back up the stands and inside to the cafeteria. All in all it lasted only about a good 30 minutes.

Overall the tour was definitely interesting, but it felt kind of short. Most stadium tours last at least an hour. For one it would have been nice to view the stadium from up the stands. We only saw the interior from around pitch level. It also might have been nice to see the business facilities, control room, and other behind-the-scenes areas. Right now it really was the bare minimum.

So a very nice experience, definitely worth the metro ride, but a bit too short.

The transportation was not suitable for four adults plus the tour guide. Getting in and out of the vehicle was a hassle and uncomfortable due to the limited leg room in the rear seats. This tour required above six hours of travel time in the vehicle and it became uncomfortable due to the leg room and lack of air conditioning. The guide at Tajin was amazing and other locations were great. The restaurant we visited was also great. The tour guide was okay. Each day we went to a different tour with a different tour guide and tourists. We messaged the tour agent on whatsapp to get the pickup info for each day. My favorite day was Puebla. It was all very interesting and well done but I'll focus on the museum. The Mexica (Aztec) and Teotihuacan rooms are full of masterpieces of those cultures, gorgeously displayed and lit. One caveat: I assumed the tour would spend most of the time at the Museum of Anthropology and that I'd have time to learn about Teotihuacan, which I was planning to visit the next day. Obviously, I had no idea how big the museum is or how different the various cultures were. When Gabriela said we would only see the Mexica room, I was surprised and disappointed - but not for long. She graciously adjusted the tour so that we saw both the Mexica and Teotihuacan rooms, and she did a fabulous job on both. Any discussion of major professional sports in Mexico has to begin with the country’s largest and most famous stadium, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Open since 1966, the venue is just dripping with history and significance in the sports world. It was the first stadium to host the World Cup final twice, doing so in 1970 and 1986. Its place in international football is secure, as it serves as the home stadium for both the Mexican national team and Club América, perhaps the most popular club in the country’s professional league.

And Estadio Azteca is well-known to American fans because it has hosted a number of NFL games as part of the league’s International Series. The venue was the host of the first NFL regular-season game played outside the United States when the 49ers and Cardinals clashed in Mexico City in 2005.

While the NFL International Series will continue to include Mexico City in the future, another event is coming soon that will appeal to American and international fans: The World Cup is returning, with games scheduled for Estadio Azteca in 2026. As such, the stadium is undergoing a series of renovations and as a result will not host an NFL game during the 2023 or 2024 seasons.

No matter what’s going on at Estadio Azteca, the building is well worth a visit and a spot on the itinerary when visiting Mexico City, one of North American’s most fascinating cities.

Getting to the stadium

Mexico City is a huge, sprawling city, so if a game or other event at Estadio Azteca is part of your visit, know this first: The stadium, located in the neighborhood of Coyocán, is not located near anything that would be considered a major tourist attraction.

In fact, Estadio Azteca is at least 15 kilometers south of the districts that are popular with tourists, such as La Condesa, Roma and Polanco.

So it goes without saying that if you’re a visitor to Mexico City, you’ll have to plan well for a trip to the stadium — and budget your time accordingly.

Estadio Azteca lies near the Anillo Periférico , the major ring highway that circles the city, so getting to the site isn’t a particular challenge for drivers. However, the traffic can build the closer you get to the stadium — and the closer to game time you get — so be prepared for some frustration as you get within a couple miles.

If you’re not driving or taking a rideshare, you do have a public transportation option to get to Estadio Azteca. Getting to the stadium requires using two services: the Mexico City Metro subway , and the  Xochimilco Light Rail  ( Tren Ligero ) line, which extends beyond the subway’s reach and leads to the stadium.

If you go this route, you just have to be sure to make your way to the No. 2 or Blue ( Azul ) line toward the Tasqueña station, at which you can transfer to light rail.

Note that for the annual NFL Mexico Game, the league sets up a shuttle network that provides direct service to Estadio Azteca from several pickup points around the city. While affordable (typically around 100 pesos roundtrip), this is a popular and thus crowded option, and starting your journey to the stadium as early as possible is advised.

Parking at Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca is surrounded by a large parking lot, with most of the spaces located on the west side. Note that if you’ve used a shuttle service to get to the event, such as the NFL Mexico Game, the drop-off and pickup points are stationed on this side of the stadium.

Depending on the event, entry into the Estadio Azteca parking lot will typically cost around 100 pesos (about US$5).

There are smaller, independent parking lots nearby that you can use for Estadio Azteca events, but the stadium’s own lot is big enough that auxiliary options aren’t usually needed.

Things to do around the stadium.

The stadium grounds are largely surrounded by dense residential neighborhoods, so you’d be hard-pressed to find something to do before an Estadio Azteca event from an entertainment standpoint.

Exploring the nearby streets might be an option, as the area is filled with small restaurants and independent food vendors that serve the neighborhood. There’s also a fairly large shopping mall, the Centro Comercial Perisur , about three miles to the west.

Depending on the event, the Estadio Azteca grounds can also host large pregame fairs that make it worth it for fans to arrive early.

For the NFL Mexico game, the grounds typically open up to five hours before kickoff, with sponsor exhibits, food trucks and live music present to help fans pass the time before heading inside.

Beyond that, though, you might find it more worth your while to spend your pregame time in one of Mexico City’s more lively areas before taking advantage of public transit to make your way to Estadio Azteca.

Watching a game at Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca was built to host some of the grandest events on the world sporting stage, such as the World Cup final – so any event you might see there, from Club América matches to the NFL International Series to El Tri matches, can feel like quite the spectacle.

However, Estadio Azteca is now more than a half-century old, and walking around the stadium during any event you might see there, you’ll be able to tell.

So let’s just say that the venue carries a historic feel, but the infrastructure demands a little bit of patience among fans — especially when the event is sold out and the place is jam-packed.

The perimeter of the stadium is fenced off, creating what is in essence a concourse around it, and you can find many food, drink and souvenir options by strolling this area. However, once it comes time to enter the seating area, you’ll pass through turnstiles and then have to negotiate a maze of steps and ramps to get to your level.

Estadio Azteca has no less than six seating levels, numbered from 100 to 600, so if you’re sitting high up, you’ll be climbing ramps for a while. And keep in mind that this is Mexico City, with an altitude of more than 7,000 feet, so be sure not to overdo it as you make that climb.

The seating bowl at Estadio Azteca is majestic, and looking out at a full stadium during a big event is an awe-inspiring sight. But you’ll quickly notice an interesting quirk.

The upper decks have chain-linked fences with barbed wire on top of them, ostensibly to keep fans from throwing things (or maybe even themselves) onto lower seating levels. But if you have a seat in one of the first 4-5 rows of these levels, you’ll find yourself watching the game through the fence, which is less than optimal.

Meanwhile, the concourses on these upper levels are narrow to say the least, and best avoided during event intermissions (such as halftime of soccer or American football games) because they get packed with fans trying to use bathrooms, smoke or just hang out.

Food and drink at Estadio Azteca

There’s very little in the way of concessions on the upper levels at Estadio Azteca, so fans in those seating areas can either make their way down to the perimeter or wait in their seats for vendors to come along — which might be the more interesting of the two options.

On the main level, food trucks are usually present and dish out tacos and other Mexican street foods, as well as American stadium fare such as burgers, hot dogs and fries.

But if you’re looking for a unique stadium experience (at least compared to American venues), then wait in your seat for a vendor to come along — and there are many of them roaming the seating sections at Estadio Azteca.

Among the options available: Instant ramen cups, but accompanied by lime and hot sauce for a Mexican twist; bags of chips, but with hot sauce (the vendor will add the sauce and shake it for you); shaved ice in citrus flavors, and cups of fruit.

Nearly all of these choices run for 100 pesos or less, so they’re typically light on the wallet — a nice surprise if you’re an American fan used to high stadium concession prices.

Of course, beer is plentiful, with Mexican brands Corona and Tecate available as well as American options like Bud and Bud Light.

Hosts Mexico will open the biggest-ever edition of the World Cup on 11 June 2026 with the first of 104 matches which will be staged in 16 locations across three countries.

Estadio Azteca Mexico City has been confirmed as the venue for the opening fixture of the FIFA World Cup 26™ on Thursday, 11 June 2026, becoming the first stadium to host three FIFA World Cup™ opening matches.

The full match schedule for the biggest-ever FIFA World Cup has now been unveiled, giving the framework for the 104-game tournament featuring 48 teams across 16 host cities in three countries – Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Hosts Mexico will have the honour of getting the tournament under way in their capital city, kicking off proceedings in the historic venue which hosted the World Cup finals and opening games of 1970 and 1986.

Mexico will play all three of their group fixtures on home soil, with Estadio Guadalajara hosting their second game on Thursday, 18 June before a return to Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, 24 June for their final group match.

A true coliseum of world football and the first to host a third FIFA World Cup, Estadio Azteca Mexico City - which welcomed the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona across two pulsating World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986 - will once again take centre stage.

The arena's day job is to host both Club America and Cruz Azul of Liga MX as well as the Mexico national team, while Pumas, Atlante, Atletico Espanyol and Necaxa have all previously played their football here.

World Cup Football Winners List

The next edition of the World Cup will take place from 11th June to 19th July 2026, marking a return to the traditional slot of the Northern Hemisphere's summer. There are plenty of differences compared to previous tournaments. Between 1998 and 2022, only 64 matches took place to decide the winner of each competition . There will be 72 games in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup alone.

The upcoming tournament will comprise 48 teams - bumped up from the traditional 36 - separated into 12 groups of four. The new format has been criticised by some, with the famous line 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it', coming to prominence, but FIFA have opted to have an increased schedule to involve more of the world.

It was initially expected that the tournament would have 16 groups of three, but that was eventually changed after the excitement produced in the opening round of matches at the 2022 World Cup. In the process, the top two in each group will qualify automatically, while the eight best third-placed teams, out of just 12 groups, will also advance to the round of 32. From that point onwards, it is a straight knockout until the final on 19th July 2026.

The fixtures for the 2026 World Cup have not yet been confirmed. USA, Canada and Mexico are all guaranteed qualification as host nations, while the other 45 teams will be decided beforehand. It's impossible to know who they will play, but we do know where the three hosts will be based.

They will all play their group stage matches in their own nation across two stadiums. Mexico will kick off the tournament at the world-famous Estadio Azteca before turning out at the Estadio Akron. Canada will walk onto pitches at BMO Field and BC Place, while USA will play at the SoFi Stadium and Lumen Field.

The qualification process for the World Cup is currently underway. FIFA announced that CONCACAF (North America) will have six teams competing at the 2026 World Cup, but half of those slots have been gobbled up by the three host nations already representing the continent. AFC (Asia) have been awarded eight qualification spots, while CAF (Africa) have nine.

OFC (Oceania) have just one, with UEFA (Europe) being handed 16 spaces for the tournament. Six teams will then qualify through a series of intercontinental play-offs - though no European nations will be involved in this stage of qualification. UEFA have an internal round of playoffs to decide the final European spots. The full roster for the 2026 World Cup will not be decided until the end of 2025.

There are 16 venues at the 2026 World Cup , stretching across the continent. Mexico have three stadiums, in the form of the Estadio Azteca, Estadio BBVA and Estadio Akron, while Canada will boast two grounds. BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto will both host Canada's matches in the tournament, presenting the possibility of a memorable time for the country on home soil.

The final is set to be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It holds over 87,157 and beat the AT&T Stadium for the right to host the most-watched sporting event of the year. The home of the New York Giants and New York Jets is predominantly used for American Football . This is the case with most of the tournament's US-based stadiums.

The New Jersey ground has also held the Super Bowl once, back in 2014, when the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos . The overall construction cost of the venue was more than £1.6bn when it opened in 2010. One of the reasons it was given the opportunity to host the final is because of how advanced it is. It has four LED display screens dotted in each corner - and they provide spectators from each tier with a different view of the action.

World Cup 2026 Stadium Guide

Tickets are not yet on sale for the 2026 World Cup, but it is expected that they will be expensive. Fans can pre-register their interest in buying tickets via the FIFA website, which will see them notified as soon as new information and sale dates are announced. It will still be another year until anything tangible emerges. With America already being one of the most expensive countries in the world, prices are expected to be hefty. An analysis by German sports consultancy Keller Sports in 2022 found that the average ticket at the Qatar World Cup was £286 , rising to £684 for the final. Expect the prices in 2026 to be even steeper.

Tickets for major tournaments are split into three categories. There are tickets allocated to member associations - the two countries playing against each other in a given match, which are based on loyalty through the qualifying matches. The second category is those seats given over to sponsors and other members, which are off-limits for the general public. Meanwhile, the third category is a general sale. These are the tickets that anyone can buy without being a member of any country’s loyalty scheme or part of football's infrastructure.

If you aren't able to travel to North America to watch the tournament, don't worry. Every match will be shown on live TV in most countries around the world. In America and Canada, you can watch the tournament on Fox Sports and CTV/TSN/RDS respectively.

In the UK, the deal for the World Cup is not yet confirmed - and it will go down to a bidding process. However, the tournament is on a government-mandated protected list, which means it must be shown on free-to-air channels. Since 1966, this has been split between the BBC and ITV; they can be watched with a TV license but no subscription. It is likely that the two channels will keep the coverage the same in 2026. Meanwhile, Australia have not yet confirmed who will show the tournament either, but they will be hoping to cheer on their nation there.

We’re 100 days out from the kickoff of Leagues Cup 2024. It’s not too early, though, to start looking ahead and dreaming of the best storylines and matchups.

Last time around, MLS teams claimed the top three spots. Liga MX clubs will arrive in the U.S. and Canada not only hungry for revenge, but also armed with the knowledge their top teams now have " hub privileges " allowing them to set up base in one region rather than be full-time nomads.

Examples: Club América will play all matches through the semifinal in California. CF Monterrey will be in Texas through the Round of 16.

That travel equalizer could produce even better contests in 2024. Here are five group-stage storylines we'll be watching.

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami hope to defend their Leagues Cup title, but there’s a marquee matchup right out of the gate. On Aug. 3, the reigning champions of the tournament travel to Houston for a date with André-Pierre Gignac and Tigres.

Two of the most influential players to arrive in the region from abroad in the last decade could put on a show for fans in Houston, where Tigres’ previous Leagues Cup run ended against rival Monterrey at a packed Shell Energy Stadium.

The stage will be even bigger this time around, with Gignac and teammates Nahuel Guzmán and Diego Lainez looking to get a result against Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets .

Watching the big-name stars rise to the occasion was one of the joys of Leagues Cup 2023. And you know Messi, an Argentine world champion and Gignac, a French legend, will want to impress in front of a crowd that could top 70,000 at NRG Stadium.

This winter saw San Jose Earthquakes homegrown Cade Cowell move from Northern California to Guadalajara to join Chivas . The transfer has worked well for the Liga MX club, with Cowell appearing in 13 Liga MX matches so far this season, scoring in a win against Pumas. He also added three goals in Concacaf Champions Cup play, including a goal at Estadio Azteca against rival Club América.

Homecomings are always emotional, and the 20-year-old returning to the Bay Area for a competitive match at Levi’s Stadium (68,000+ capacity) will be worth watching – even if his 15-year-old brother Chance Cowell likely won’t be with San Jose's first team just yet despite signing a homegrown deal in May 2023.

“San Jose fans have always been great to me. They’ve been really nice and kind after games. It’s a great atmosphere, and I’m really happy they’ll still get to root me on if they want,” he said with a laugh in a video released after the transfer was announced.

We’ll have to see what the reception is in Santa Clara to know what Bay Area fans decided.

Chivas’ other group match also includes a homecoming of sorts, with forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez returning to Dignity Health Sports Park to face the LA Galaxy after scoring 38 goals in four seasons with the Galaxy.

After going straight into the knockout stages as the defending MLS Cup champion for the 2023 tournament, this year marks the first time LAFC will be in the Leagues Cup group stage.

They open with an appealing showdown against a team that tried to plant its flag in Southern California in the past: Club Tijuana.

A not insignificant number of the most talented young players in the LA region have been enticed to join Xolos academy, and the short distance between the two teams should mean the start of an international series with extra flavor.

LAFC are already familiar with current Tijuana boss Miguel Herrera. The spirited manager was fired after his América team fell to LAFC 3-1 in the 2020 Concacaf Champions Cup, memorably heading to the empty stands at Exploria Stadium after being sent off and using a walkie-talkie apparently to communicate with his staff.

This game will need to take a few twists to get as wacky as that one, but we’ve seen crazy moments in Leagues Cup before.

Cruz Azul made it to the 2023 Leagues Cup Round of 32 before falling to goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina and Charlotte FC in a penalty shootout. But that match took place in a neutral site in Texas. This summer, La Maquina step into Charlotte’s actual home, the raucous Bank of America Stadium where crowds to see the third-year MLS team regularly eclipse 30,000, and sometimes approach 70,000.

Of course, Cruz Azul have been rebooted under manager Martin Anselmi, who took over in January. The Mexico City club currently sits fourth in the Liga MX table. Former LA Galaxy winger Uriel Antuna is on fire with eight goals in the ongoing Clausura.

Charlotte aren't doing so poorly themselves, with Patrick Agyemang finding a winner in the 85th minute of the weekend’s match against Toronto FC to put the team into Eastern Conference playoff position eight matches into the campaign.

It’ll be an exciting summer of soccer in Charlotte as fans at Bank of America Stadium await the chance to see their team square off with a Liga MX grande, hoping The Crown once again can see off Los Cementeros in Leagues Cup action.

Austin FC weren't able to get out of their Leagues Cup group last year, failing to advance from one of only two groups that included a pair of Liga MX clubs. In 2024, it’s deja vu for the Verde & Black, with Q2 Stadium set to host two historic Liga MX clubs.

One of the most anticipated matches of the group stage will be their fixture vs. Monterrey, one of the seeded Mexican clubs. Fans of both clubs will be in the stadium hoping to see a win in a match that could make or break a team’s Leagues Cup campaign early on.

It also will be a return to U.S. soil for Brandon Vazquez. The former FC Cincinnati attacker left for Rayados in the winter and has five goals in Liga MX play in addition to four in Concacaf Champions Cup – and the team is still alive in both tournaments. He’ll want to continue that hot streak this summer, hoping US men's national team manager Gregg Berhalter takes note of his continued goal-scoring.

After last year’s Leagues Cup run fell just short for Monterrey, with the club falling in the semifinals, look for Vazquez’s club manager, Tano Ortiz, to push for the podium this time around. To do so, he’ll also need to see off Pumas, who open against Austin on July 26.

“El jugar defensivamente es una manera también de ganar partidos, no porque te guste jugar así, ya que los equipos a veces juegan a la defensiva, no porque te guste jugar así, sino porque te obligan a jugar así”, explicó Sánchez. “Hay lapsos de los partidos en los que primero puede dominar la posición de balón un equipo, te crea a ocasiones claras de gol en el primer tiempo y luego de repente hay un bajón o un cambio o una expulsión y esto te hace variar. Al variarte, tienes un nombre menos, si no tienes un hombre menos, el funcionamiento ofensivo tal vez no está colaborando en lo defensivo y el rival te está presionando en tu cancha. Entonces, tú tienes que regular para buscar la manera de tener un mejor orden defensivo y luego de cero empiezas para adelante a atacar”.

Para Sánchez, al hablar de lo que sucedió con el Barcelona en su serie ante el París Saint Germain se lo atribuyó a las dos expulsiones que sufrió el equipo catalán.

“La expulsión de (Ronald) Araujo fue una razón fundamental como para disminuir ese porcentaje de probabilidades de pasar a la semifinal. Y eso representa que en el fútbol actual hay mucha intensidad. Cuando hay mucha intensidad, cuando tú tienes un hombre menos, se nota la presión, porque la presión que hay defensivamente hacia el rival es un desgaste físico”; declaró Sánchez. “Para mí la clave del porqué se vino abajo el Barcelona fue con la expulsión del entrenador. El entrenador es el líder. El entrenador es el que pone la pauta en un seguimiento táctico y estratégico”.

“Cuando ves que tu entrenador da muestras de inseguridad, nerviosismo, impotencia, desesperación, todo eso lo irradias a los jugadores. Te lo digo por experiencia propia. Entonces, Si Xavi reaccionó de esa manera, él sabe perfectamente que se equivocó, porque cuando menos tenía que haberse hecho expulsar era en ese momento, ya que es cuando más lo necesitaba el Barcelona”, añadió Sánchez.

En las últimas horas, ha girado mucho la información de que Rafa Márquez estaría llegando al Barcelona de España para relevar a Xavi en el banquillo, algo que le ha caído muy bien a su compatriota mexicano.

“Sería fantástico. Yo, como mexicano y como amigo de él, le deseo toda la energía positiva para que se haga realidad, porque es una oportunidad muy buena”, explicó Sánchez. “Si le dan la oportunidad, que ojalá se la den, que la va a aceptar inmediatamente. Así que Xavi ya anunció su salida del Barcelona y tal y como están los resultados, yo creo que a final de temporada dejará de ser director técnico de Barcelona y ojalá que se le dé a Rafa. Y por supuesto, todos los mexicanos estamos ilusionados y deseosos de que así sea”, declaró Sánchez.

Por lo pronto, el partido del domingo tiene todo para que el Real Madrid se ponga a solamente pasos del título de liga, pues actualmente tiene 78 puntos, por 70 del Barcelona.

Para Casillas, lo sucedido durante la semana en la Champions afectará el encuentro, pero también el buen momento que tiene el Real Madrid en LaLiga y como premio su exequipo estará en el “asiento de conductor en el partido”.

Castillas también dijo que a pesar de la remodelación del Santiago Bernabéu, la casa del Real Madrid sigue siendo igual de importante a la hora de ejercer la ventaja de local.

“Para nosotros, que nos hemos criado en ese estadio y hemos visto algunos cambios que otros, está claro que la atmósfera, la brisa que se respira allí en el campo, sigue siendo la misma. Lo que pasa que es cierto que ha ido cambiando todo y se ha moldeado a un estadio que no tenía nada que ver a lo que era antes. Pero la magia sigue estando”, expresó Casillas. “Yo creo que también es bueno que los aficionados se sigan sintiendo como en casa. Y creo que el club, en este caso, Florentino Pérez, ha hecho una gran labor para poder estar a la altura de del siglo XXI y poder estar a la altura del mejor club del mundo”.
