Benidorm has risen out of its historic beginnings to feature a vibrant mix of modern skyscrapers that tower over the charming cobbled streets of the city’s Old Town. Among the sense of lavish tourism, lies alleys awash with the smells of tapas, bubbling spritz and orange-soaked sangrias.

Wandering on two feet leads to untold surprises and gorgeous views. But this article and the noise around town will guide you on your way to multiple thrilling, memorable adventures. Laze on the beach if you wish. But there will always be more to discover.

How to Get to Benidorm

Benidorm has developed into a preeminent destination along the Spanish Mediterranean. It’s quite well connected to the rest of the country, either by major motorways, Spanish trains , or airports.

The closest major airport is Alicante International. This is 35 minutes by car. A taxi will cost between €60 and €70. Buses depart from the airport and take around an hour to reach your destination.

In addition, Alicante has a high-speed train station, AVE. This is a great choice for those traveling domestically. From Madrid, the train takes just over two hours. A separate train or tram can then take you onwards to Benidorm (1.5 hours).

If you plan to land at Alicante Airport, you can explore the fun things to do in Alicante for a few days before hopping on the tram and spending the rest of your trip on the beaches of Benidorm.

Getting Around Benidorm

Benidorm itself is easy to explore on foot. In fact, it’s the best way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere and culture. Each alley promises a new experience and can lead to some incredible local cuisine.

Taxis are readily available around town. For reference, a trip of 3 miles (5km) will cost around €8.

Public transport here is efficient and cost-effective. If you plan on making the most of this, either purchase a TarjetaBus card or a 24-hour or 72-hour unlimited tourist card. Bus line 16 takes guests to Algar Waterfall and 16 takes you to Guadalest.

While car hire in Spain isn’t necessary for those staying in downtown Benidorm. It can be cost-effective if you’re traveling from the airport and want to explore more of Costa Blanca .

Now that the logistics are out of the way, let’s explore the top Benidorm activities for your trip to Spain’s Costa Blanca.

1. Explore Benidorm’s Old Town

Benidorm in the 21st century may have skyscrapers and the fixings of modern life. But let’s be honest dear readers, nothing tops the beauty and charm of a traditional Old Town. That holds true here in the Alicante region.

Benidorm, once a small fishing village, grew throughout the Middle Ages. Upon the construction of Punta Canfali Castle in the 1300s, the life of the city changed. As it expanded, the castle continued to be the central focus, with all the narrow, cobbled streets streaming out like confetti.

These streets are littered with wrought-iron balconies draped in colorful flowers. Stone arches greet you and monuments bob up alongside happening plazas. These include Santa Ana and San Jaime churches along with the iconic Balcon del Mediterraneo .

The houses in Benidorm on the edges of town are some of my favorite places to stay, quiet and relaxing.

2. Take in the Views at Balcon del Mediterraneo

The whitewashed Mediterranean Balcony , enveloped by the emerald-blue seas, is a scene straight from your Spanish bucket list. The steps, warmed by the sun, guide you between the ivory balustrades towards the sparkling chessboard tiles.

From there, it’s easy to feel like a master of the universe, gazing out to the horizon, basking in the postcard-worthy vista.

On either side, the coast curves, showcasing a mix of monuments, skyscrapers, and the tempting sands of Playa de Levante and Poniente Beach. As it looks out to the eastern horizon, we suggest setting that alarm clock for an early wake-up. Sunrise here is the perfect start to the day.

Once you’ve maxed out your photo album, head along the vibrant Plaça del Castell . Grab your morning coffee, or if it’s a little later, settle in for some refreshing sangria and watch the world go by.

3. Eat Your Way Along Tapas Alley

Speaking of happening streets and lanes, when it comes to eating here in Benidorm, there is one place that stands out. In the heart of the Old Town, Calle de Santo Domingo winds its way through town. The covered streets, complete with the sightly architecture we know and love, is fixed with seemingly endless tapas bars.

Morning, afternoon, or night, the alley has you covered. Merely walking along is a delight for the senses. The colors of the restaurants, the smells of the jamón and the sounds of locals are still boisterous after years of enjoying Calle Santo Domingo.

There are dozens of spots, so where do we recommend? La Cava Aragonesa has over 100 unique tapas and pintxos (similar to those you might find in Bilbao ).

4. Sunbathe at Levante Beach

There is a great balance between the past and present here in Benidorm. Forts and the haunting presence of old castles mingle with the rising buildings on the water’s edge. With all that still, it’s likely the golden sands of Benidorm that first inspired your trip.

Levante Beach is famed for its arch of golden sand, lapped by the seas as blue as the shady parasols. On either end are surging headlands, one tamed by modern construction, the other a cliff of rugged sandstone rock.

As you lay down your beach towel, the cool wind of the Med passes your ear. It mingles with the heat of the midday sun, providing that invigorating balance. Read a book under your umbrella, cool off with a swim, or head to any of the restaurants or bars that form Levante’s backdrop.

Benidorm’s Playa Levante is one of the region’s most beautiful beaches, it’s no wonder this is a popular destination for travelers to Spain looking for sun and sand.

5. Have a Day at Terra Mítica

Sometimes in life, you just want to have a little fun. You know, the kind of fun usually reserved for the kids. Terra Mítica is a theme park with a difference. It taps into the history of Benidorm, the ancient presence of the Romans, and the historic civilizations of Egypt and Greece.

But this isn’t a history lesson. As one of Spain’s largest theme parks, it celebrates and romanticizes the past with an abundance of thrilling rides and experiences added in.

As you wander through each ancient society, there’s no telling what you’ll find. See a reenactment of Spartacus’ rebellion or the “Dream of Egypt”. It feels like a living, breathing world.

But again, it’s all about the fun, with the highlight being the Magnus Colossus roller coaster which is over a kilometer long. Grab your tickets here .

6. Check Out Algar Waterfall

Just half an hour north of town, Algar Waterfall is one of the most breathtaking sights in the region. The resplendent jewel is enveloped in nature and rising walls of sandstone, limestone, and quartz. Each full to the brim with crystal clear water.

Algar Waterfall is, in fact, a collection of several waterfalls forming a delightful staircase into the hills. The falling streams have carved cobalt-blue lagoons where you can swim, float and explore. With a mix of shade and streaming alpine water, it’s slightly chilly but ultimately refreshing.

If you have hired a car, you can easily get here by driving. However, if you wish to add some adventure, check out this ATV tour . Head off along the Algar riverbed to arrive at the falls in a memorable way.

Levante Beach is full of chairs and umbrellas, which you can usually rent for a few hours or for the entire day.

7. Enjoy a Downhill Bike Ride

Who here loves to bike ride? Better yet, who here loves to bike ride without having to pedal uphill? Whoever has joined me with the second question, will love this two-wheel experience .

It all starts by heading up to Mount Aitana. AT a height of over 5,100 ft (1558m), you’ll be above it all along Costa Blanca. But that’s just the beginning.

Your 18-mile (30km) bike ride kicks off from the top, winding its way back down to the valley. Peddle if you want, or simply let gravity do what it does best.

Along the way, you’ll make several stops, including a visit to the alpine village of Penagula and Alcoleja with lunch at Safari Aitana Park.

8. Take a Boat to Benidorm Island

From most viewpoints looking out to the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll be able to spot one large floating isle of rock. This is, in fact, Benidorm Island.

Whether you believe this is merely a spectacular sea stack or a rock thrown into the Mediterranean by a giant, it makes for a great day trip.

The island is a nature reserve, keeping it in pristine, unspoiled condition. With a little gondola boat ride (you’ll even find a submarine option!) you can step onto the island and begin your exploration.

There is a small cafe on the island, but we recommend packing a nice picnic basket and enjoying the views back to Benidorm.

9. Visit Guadalest

In the mountain region of Marine Baixa, Guadalest is a beautiful alpine village. One of Valencia’s most popular destinations, it’s a mere 30 minutes from your base in Benidorm.

You could easily spend a day exploring the ancient city. It was first developed by the Moors, with its oldest sites only accessible on foot. A stroll through a historic gateway, immersed in forest and rock, leads you to castle ruins and a Church belfry that hangs onto the edge of a mountain.

This castle was once the hub of Guadalest in the 11th century. But as the town grew, it wrapped around the hill leading to the fabulous cobbled streets you can explore today.

10. See The Roman Castellum

It took over 2,000 years for the remains of Benidorm’s Roman Castellum to come to the surface. The fortified tower on the site of El Tossal de la Cala was revealed in 2013.

First, it was thought to be an ancient Iberian settlement. Further investigation and painstaking excavation proved otherwise. Unique to Spain’s eastern Costa Blanca, the Roman Castellum is home to a half dozen rooms, and a graded path to the tower’s entrance that has stood firm across the centuries.

The “castellum” or fort is thought to have been developed in the 1st century BC. Ordered by General Sertorio, it would form a part of a chain of defense along the coast of Alicante. You can explore the fort, discover ancient artifacts, and enjoy a guided tour.

11. Sunset Cruise in Altea

Just around the cape from Benidorm lies the seaside town of Altea. Head there in the afternoon to explore the whitewashed Old Town, set in an elevated position above the Mediterranean Sea. As you explore the old streets, you’ll see the sparkling blue domes of the Nuestra Señora del Consuelo church.

Such is the town’s position along the coast, it’s a great spot to head onto a catamaran and enjoy a spectacular sunset. This cruise departs from Altea Port . With the sails up, let the wind guide you as you bask in the scenery of the Med, the spellbinding coast, and the gorgeous Altea.

It all comes to a head around sunset. Enjoy a complimentary glass of cava as the sun does its dance, filling the sky with candy blues and purples mixed in with warm reds, oranges, and yellows.

12. Be a Kid at Aqualandia

You could spend your days scuba diving, swimming, and floating in the Med. But if you want to add a bit more spice to your days in the water, trade the beach for Aqualandia .

It’s a thrilling water paradise, just without the golden sand. This theme park, complete with all the water slides and rides that you can handle, is the perfect place to indulge your inner child.

The entire family can race from attraction to attraction. Although the thrill-seeker in your crew will want to keep coming back to Vertigo. This is a slide where you can reach over 60mph (100kmph) before flying into a splash pool. Book your entry tickets here .

Parasailing is one of the most popular things to do in Benidorm when you get tired of sitting in the sun and swimming in the sea.

13. Try All the Water Sports

Were Benidorm’s theme parks more of an appetizer rather than the main meal? Don’t worry, beyond the ATVs and open-top Jeeps, there’s a lot more fun and adventure to be had here.

With the helping hand of your hotel concierge, or any of the outfitters in town, there is an abundance of water sports to try.

The consistent calm seas of the Mediterranean Sea make it a great place to get on a jet ski and ride up and down Costa Blanca. If you prefer to have a view from above then book a trip to go parasailing to enjoy the sights off the coast as well.

Beginners and experts alike can also enjoy the treasures below the surface on a scuba diving adventure. You’ll also spot a few places where you can rent stand-up paddleboards and kayaks to take out along the coastline. 

14. Hike Around Sierra Helada Natural Park

If you’ve arrived outside of peak summer, strap on your hiking boots and make a beeline for Sierra Helada Natural Park. Laden with epic cliffs, craggy mountains, and stunning views, the park is the spot to break a sweat and be among nature.

With your pack full of trail mix, pick between several trails that range from family-friendly to heart-pumping difficult. The cliffs of Sierra Helada are worth enduring the suck for.

With sunblock applied and plenty of water, the coastal trail takes you up the sky-scraping cliffs as you trek between Aleppo pines. Your views show the jaw-dropping beauty of Costa Blanca hundreds of feet above the contrasting turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.

15. Day Trip to Villajoyosa

Known as La Villa among locals, Villajoyosa is home to three of my favorite things: colorful architecture, gorgeous beaches, and chocolate. No, you haven’t landed in a mix of Switzerland and a beach paradise. You’re just a short drive from downtown Benidorm.

Other coastal towns near your hub are, yes, full of color. But none come as close as the prismatic Villajoyosa. Think whitewashed homes switched for all colors of the rainbow.

Beyond these homes is a historic Old Town where the ruins of defensive walls, old-time fountains, and a captivating church lie. When the day gets warm, Villajoyosa’s beaches call your name. From Playa la Villajoyosa to Playa del Varadero, you have a handful of great spots to choose from.

If you love music, come for Low, Benidorm’s yearly indie festival, and if you want to hang with the locals, turn up much later then you think at Benidorm’s restaurants and bars.  

As a tourist here, you’ll get a fun holiday in the sun at a great price, and who can say fairer than that, huh? And a s the cherry on the cake, Benidorm’s golden beaches are some of the loveliest anywhere in Spain , and its skyscraper hotels are backed by rugged mountains full of superb hiking and biking trails. Best things to do in Benidorm

1.  Playa de Poniente

What is it? Benidorm’s greatest glory is its beach. Two beaches, in fact, which spread each side of the historic town, and curve for miles around the bay. Both are pristine and well equipped, but the Playa de Levante sees more action, while the Playa de Poniente is a little more chilled.

Why go? Benidorm wouldn’t be Benidorm without its beaches, which are easily some of the best on the whole of the Costa Blanca. These stunning swathes of golden sand stretch for more than 5km, and are packed with beach bars, water sports and everything you need for unbridled fun in the sun.

2.  Casco Antiguo (Old Town)

What is it? It’s hard to remember that, not so very long ago, Benidorm was just a whitewashed fishing village. Get a rare glimpse of pre-skyscraper Benidorm in the whitewashed lanes of the Casco Antiguo, and soak up stunning views from the ‘Balcony of the Mediterranean’.

Why go? The Casco Antiguo is squeezed onto a small headland that divides Benidorm’s lovely beaches. Wind your way up through the narrow streets to reach the ‘Balcony of the Mediterranean’ viewpoint, then tour the tapas bars of C/Santo Domingo and around (perhaps slurp some oysters at the Ostreria Biarritz ).

3.  Benidorm Island

What is it? Local legend says that a lovelorn giant ripped off the top of the mountain behind Benidorm and tossed it into the sea to create this little island in the middle of the bay. It’s now a nature reserve, perfect for a stroll, a snorkel and a picnic.

Why go? Regular glass-bottomed boat trips head out to the island, and offer amazing views back over Benidorm’s skyscrapers. On the island, there are walks, peacocks, a little café-bar and minuscule coves to explore with a snorkel.

4.  Terra Mítica

What is it? One of Spain’s biggest theme parks, the Terra Míticia  offers some high-octane rides and lots of thrills and spills in zoned areas which recall ancient Mediterranean civilisations from Egypt to Greece. Whether you fancy risking your lunch on roller coasters or simply splashing about in pools, this is fun for everyone.

Why go? Thrill-seekers will love the Titánide – a fast (100km/ph) inverted roller coaster with loops and drops – or the insane disk-shaped SkyKope. If you prefer to keep your feet on terra firma, then there are plenty of rides and shows that will keep you entertained.

5.  Aqualandia

What is it? There’s nowhere better to beat the heat than a water park, and Benidorm obliges with several to choose from. Aqualandia and Aqua Natura offer plenty of slides and pools to keep the adrenaline flowing.

Why go? If the beach just isn’t cutting it, hit one of Benidorm’s water parks for some splashtastic fun in the sun.

6.  Sierra Helada Natural Park

What is it? If you want to escape the beachfront craziness, there’s nowhere better to do it than the Sierra Helada nature reserve, which is stretched across the mountains and cliffs around Benidorm. There are several hikes, suitable for all abilities, so grab some picnic goodies and head uphill for some tremendous views.

Why go? The Sierra Helada (Serra Gelada in Valencian) provides the perfect retreat from the summer crowds. There are well-signposted hiking trails, including a stunning cliff walk and another that leads to the Benidorm Cross at the top of the mountain.

7.  Low Festival

What is it? One of Spain’s best rock and indie music festivals, this awesome, three-day event is just one of the brilliant music festivals that Benidorm hosts every year. ‘Low’ is short for ‘Low-cost’ and you’ll have all the fun at about half the cost of similar events.

Why go? The Low  line-up has seen the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, The Vaccines and Chemical Brothers. Kick off the weekend in style by making sure you catch the insane opening party on Levante Beach.

8.  Tossal de la Cala

What is it? This huge, craggy rock closes in the southern end of the Playa de Poniente, and is one of the best places to get a fabulous bird’s-eye view of Benidorm. It’s especially gorgeous at sunset, although you might have to share it with young canoodlers.

Why go? For the most Insta-perfect views over the mini-Manhattan of Benidorm, you need to make the schlep up this rock. (Or jump in a cab if you can’t face the climb.) If you feel like hanging around, some of the earliest traces of human inhabitation in the area were discovered on this rock. You can check them out while you’re up here.

9.  Restaurante La Falúa

What is it? Dine in style at this elegant spot, where the plush, designer interior is complemented by a fabulous outdoor terrace, where you can sink into a lounge bed with a glass of champagne in hand.  

Why go? The paintings on the walls, crisp linen and warm lighting at La Falúa provide an elegant setting for the delicious cuisine at this smart restaurant, which also has an excellent wine list. Afterwards, chill out over a cocktail on the terrace.

10.  La Cava Aragonesa

What is it? You can’t leave Benidorm without a trip down Tapas Alley – which is what everyone calls the Calle Santo Domingo. La Cava Aragonesa is one of the best options along this popular strip, and offers more than a 100 different tapas and pinchos (baguette slices with different toppings).

Why go? A trawl down Tapas Alley is an institution in Benidorm, whether you’re a pasty Brit or a bronzed local, and all are welcome in the numerous tapas bars that are concentrated on and around the Plaça de la Constitució. It also does a bargain set lunch.

Located in the Marina Baixa region in Alicante, Benidorm is one of the top tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca, thanks to its excellent beaches and its wide range of accommodation, restaurants and leisure activities.

Its historic centre stands on a promontory, and contrasts with the broad avenues lined with buildings, shops and outdoor cafés which extend five kilometres along the coastline. Benidorm offers a whole range of possibilities: from strolling along the seafront promenade or swimming in the sea, to enjoying a range of water sports or taking a boat trip to the island of Benidorm. …Not to mention the various local festivities , and its mouth-watering cuisine featuring rice and fish as its star ingredients.

Benidorm is one of the most important tourist resorts on Alicante’s Costa Blanca . Its fine sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and outstanding year-round climate have made it justly famous, and it also has a full range of first rate infrastructures and services. But there is no doubt that Benidorm’s greatest attraction is its marvellous beaches. Its five kilometres of coastline are home to endless sandy beaches and secluded coves where holidaymakers can enjoy a refreshing swim, or try their hand at any one of the numerous water sports on offer: scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, etc. Situated to the north of the port, the Levante beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the city. Its location in the town itself, as well as being handy for a whole range of services, also makes for easy access to these over two kilometres of fine golden sand. This emblematic beach is set against a busy seafront promenade which is dotted with pavement cafés and restaurants, and is also the site of a lively nightlife. The Poniente beach stretches for some three kilometres to the south of the town. Like the Levante beach, it is also set against the backdrop of a long seafront promenade and offers a full range of services, as well as being accessible and convenient. Between these two famous beaches in Benidorm lies the Mal Pas , a tranquil cove with fine sand, near the historic part of town and the port. Ti Ximo and La Almadrava are at the southernmost end of Benidorm, where the coastline becomes rockier and more difficult to access. At some distance from the centre of town, these secluded natural coves offered the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town, and to enjoy scuba diving or snorkelling on the magnificent rocky seabed.

City and leisure

The historic centre of Benidorm stands on a promontory located between the two main beaches, the Levante and Poniente. This was the original site of the city, a primitive fishing village overlooked by the church of San Jaime . Built in the 18th century, its blue domes rise above a network of narrow streets and picturesque corners. The Cerro Canfali rock gives onto the viewing point known as the Balcón del Mediterráneo (“balcony over the Mediterranean”), which offers outstanding views over the sea. Both sides of the historic part of town lie the broad avenues and streets lined with shops and businesses which are part of modern Benidorm. Everything in this city is geared to the enjoyment of holidaymakers, and it offers a wide range of services, including numerous hotel establishments , restaurants and outdoor cafes and bars. Benidorm has infinite leisure options: everything from strolling along the endless seafront promenade to visiting places such as the central L’Aigüera park , or spending an unforgettable day at the Mediterranean theme park of Terra Mítica. It is also home to various sports facilities, including a sailing school and several scuba-diving schools. Boat trips depart from the port to the small island of Benidorm in the centre of the bay. Legend has it that the island is made from a piece from the nearby Puig Campana rock, which the brave warrior Roland cut off with his sword during a raid by Charlemagne. Its rich seabed makes this a paradise for scuba divers.

Gastronomy, festivities and the surroundings

The local gastronomy is known predominantly for its fish and rice dishes. Paella is one of its most emblematic dishes, together with shellfish –either grilled or steamed– and casseroled or fried fish, or fish stew. Garlic and olive oil are the main components of the mayonnaise-type sauce known as ali-oli , which is served to accompany numerous dishes. Typical desserts from Alicante include almond tart, turron (almond and honey nougat) and ice cream. The region has several wines with the Alicante Designation of Origin label , including misteleta (sweet wine); it is also famous for its horchata (a milky drink made with tiger nuts, and protected with the designation of origin label). Benidorm is a festive town which loves to party. The festivities in honour of the city’s patron saints, the Virgin del Sufragio and San Jaime Apóstol , take place from the second Sunday in November and feature a wide variety of events, including a parade of floats, theatrical re-enactments and fireworks. A few days later, the historic centre of the town becomes the site of the traditional and popular Festa de la Carxofa (artichoke festival). Other highlights on the calendar of events include the festival of the bonfires of San Juan and the Festival of Moors and Christians, both in June. The area around Benidorm is home to a range of exceptional natural attractions. To the north the terrain becomes more mountainous, and features cliffs and escarpments which reach down towards the sea, and also includes the nature reserve known as the Serra Gelada . This is the setting for villages such as L’Alfàs del Pi and Altea. The attractive town of Calpe is located beside the nature reserve of Peñón de Ifach , and harmoniously combines its perfectly conserved historic and architectural heritage with modern tourist infrastructures. To the south of Benidorm, sightseers can discover towns such as Villajoyosa , the capital of the Marina Baja region. Other places of interest in the interior to the south beyond the Sierra de Aitana mountains include Cocentaina , an important mediaeval town, and Alcoy/Alcoi, famous for its Moors and Christians festival, which has been declared a festivity of International Tourist Interest. Finally the mountains of Alicante also offer the chance to explore the Carrascal de la Font Roja nature reserve , in the area around Alcoy.

15 Best Things to Do in Benidorm (Spain)

If your idea of the perfect holiday is lots of beach-time, great weather, first-rate family attractions and wild nightlife then Benidorm needs to be high up your list. The resort on the Costa Blanca has an almost-iconic skyline of apartment towers in two shallow crescents next to huge sandy beaches.

The amount of activities on offer will make your head spin, whether it’s golf, go-karting, paintballing, water sports or mountain hikes. You have an action-packed week or two in the sun or a lazy break doing next to nothing. Little ones are also going to love the heavyweight theme parks and water attractions right next to the resort.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Benidorm :

1. Levante Beach

This is the image most associated with Benidorm: An arc of pale golden sand, bounded by a long line of skyscrapers and dappled with a forest of blue parasols.

Granted, the beach can fill up in the summer, but even on the busiest days you can find a quiet place to nest away from the crowds that tend to swarm the waterline.

If all this sea air gives you can appetite then at the foot of the tall apartment blocks are restaurants and North European-style pubs.

You’re sure to find something to your taste.

2. Poniente Beach

The beach next door to Levante has a very different atmosphere; although there’s the same strip of towers, the bulk of the resort is way off to the east.

Poniente is generally quieter and more family-oriented.

This beach has  received a lot of investment in the last few years, with a network of boardwalks making it accessible to wheelchair users.

They’ll branch off the road every 30 metres or so and save a hot, tiring walk down to the water.

As with Levante the surf at Poniente is moderate, but less assured swimmers should avoid wading out too far as the undercurrents can be quite strong.

3. Mundomar

Wildlife parks with shows and demonstrations may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Mundomar is pretty modern and provides large enclosures for its wealth of sea animals and birds.

The trainers and keepers also appear to have a rapport with these dolphins and sea lions, as you’ll see during the regular shows that children are sure to love.

You can also get close to otters, penguins and a variety of primates and birds at the park’s zoo.

Book ahead for special experiences like meeting with dolphins face-to-face or swimming with sea lions.

• 4.Terra Mítica

Among the largest theme parks in Spain, this attraction is inspired by ancient civilisations.

The three areas here are Rome, Egypt and Greece and they’re all crammed with roller coasters, shows and other amusements.

One of the premier rides is the Magnus Colossus, a massive wooden roller coaster on a track more than a kilometre long.

It’s suitable for all except the littlest members of the family.

Choreographed street shows, like Spartacus’ rebellion, are all part of the fun.

A different attraction available on the same ticket is Iberia Park, next door, with water rides and amusements based on Spain’s ancient history.

5. Aqualandia

Next door to Mundomar is one of Spain’s oldest and best water parks, opening for business back in 1985. It continues to grow and new rides and amusements are added almost every season.

Some of these can break records, like Big Bang, the tallest water slide in Europe, while the brand new Vertigo sends riders hurtling to the splash pool at 100kph.

The water for all these slides, pools and jacuzzis is piped right from the Mediterranean, following a bit of desalination of course.

The wave pool at Aqualandia is gigantic, with enough room for thousands of swimmers at one time.

It’s one of the best days out in Benidorm for little guys who want a bit more excitement.

6. Balcón del Mediterráneo

Plaça del Castell is a kind of stone garden with chessboard tiles and white balustrades on the headland between Poniente and Levant.

This was the site of Benidorm’s castle, which stood for hundreds of years until it was destroyed during the Napoleonic wars.

The views on either side of the square are sublime, but nothing beats the Balcón del Mediterráneo on the southern edge of the promontory.

Take a seat beneath the lamppost here to contemplate the Mediterranean and Benidorm’s modern skyline.

7. La Cruz de Benidorm

Maybe the resort’s reputation hasn’t always been the purest, so in 1961 there was a religious mission to carry a wooden cross from the town to this rugged spur to redeem the city for its sins.

The cross to the west of Benidorm became a tourist attraction and was replaced with a permanent monument in 1975 when the old one was blown away in a storm.

The 45-minute hike to the cross is probably best attempted in the fringe seasons, as the landscape is pretty exposed.

But even if you do go at the height of summer the panoramas of Benidorm make all the toil worthwhile.

8. A round of golf

If your Mediterranean holiday feels incomplete without a round of golf you’re in luck as the Costa Blanca has 15 courses.

You don’t have to venture far for a family course, the Sierra Cortina pitch & putt.

There are 18 holes for serious players to test their short games, and for newcomers to learn the basics.

If this only whets your appetite there’s a scenic nine-hole course tucked between the mountains and the sea 15 minutes away.

Altea Golf also has a driving range, and has a pilates studio for non-golfers left behind!

9. Sierra Helada

For all Benidorm’s urban character there’s a large natural park covering a large swathe of the coastline just next door.

Within minutes you can leave sky-scraping towers behind for sky-scraping cliffs.

All you need is a decent pair of shoes, a hat and some water and you’re set for a hike through a rugged landscape of limestone rocks and Aleppo pines.

At the northern end there’s a paved road that twists up to Albir Lighthouse.

More challenging is the walk to the radio masts at the highest point of the park, 300 metres above the sea.

10. Dining and nightlife

As a true tourist enclave Benidorm isn’t exactly the last word in Spanish cuisine; the large population of expats and visitors from Northern Europe makes dining in the resort an international experience.

There are Chinese, Thai, Indian and Italian eateries, and even a Japanese sushi bar.

Still, there are a handful of good tapas bars and restaurants that serve authentic Valencian rice dishes like seafood paella.

Summer nights in Benidorm are full of life, with a huge array of bars, pubs and nightclubs where people make merry till dawn.

The biggest clubs are all in next to each other Avenida Communitat Valencia, and include KM Discoteca and Discoteca Privilege.

11. Puig Campana

The village of Finestrat is 15 minutes by car, and here you can get detailed information on how best to ascend one of the region’s highest and most emblematic peaks.

Visit the tourist office for trail maps, make sure people know that you’re going to attempt the climb, and then you can be on your way.

You won’t need anything more than sensible clothing, food, water and a phone to climb the 1,406 metres to the top.

As you go you’ll encounter a sparse, almost lunar landscape of scree and the odd tufts of pine and juniper scrub.

You’ll know why you did it when you reach one of the two peaks, as the view down to Benidorm makes the resort’s skyscrapers look like a row of dominos.

The next resort along the coast is Altea, which sits in the bay beyond the ridge of the Sierra Helada.

Altea has a quieter atmosphere to Benidorm, and has one of those typically Mediterranean old-towns to wander through.

It’s on a hillside with a steep gradient, etched with alleys and stairways.

The houses here are all painted white and wrought iron balconies, window grates and gas lights.

The unmissable monument in Altea is the parish church, loved for its two bright blue cupolas patterned with white tiles.

13. Guadalest

If you only have time for one day-trip this extraordinary place should be top of the list.

Guadalest is a small town established by the Moors in the early-middle ages.

It sits on the rim of limestone cliffs 500 metres above sea level, and interacts with the rocky landscape in all sort of surprising ways.

For instance, to get to the Moorish Castle of San José you have to pass through a tunnel carved from the rock.

From the castle walls the views out over the Aitana and Xortá will almost make you gasp.

14. Alicante

The capital of the province is close enough for a morning or afternoon excursion, and you can even get there on L1 of the Alicante tram.

There’s a bit more history in this city, and none of it is more striking than the medieval castle of Santa Bárbara.

The outer walls of this fortress dominate Alicante from the steep slopes of Mount Benacantil, and as you descend you’ll enter Santa Cruz, the old-town, where there are winding cobblestone streets and traditional, whitewashed houses.

15. Low Festival

Spain has a big indie music scene, and in the summer there are festivals in pretty much every city and large resort.

Benidorm has the Low Festival, shortened from “Low Cost”. It hits town at the end of July and if you’re into alternative guitar pop and dance music it will be a treasure trove.

Past editions have welcomed Suede, Belle and Sebastian, The Libertines, Portishead and Massive Attack, as well as a legion of Spanish like Lori Meyers, Love of Lesbian, La Casa Azul and Los Planetas.

Like other Spanish festivals the first bands take the stage at sunset, and the bill continues late into the night when it’s cooler.

8) WALK/DRIVE UP TO THE FAMOUS CROSS - Mirador de la Cruz

The views from the cross are spectacular both day and night, it is well worth a visit just to see the stunning scenery across Benidorm and the surrounding area.  It is situated at the top of the Sierra Gelada Natura reserve.  There are various routes of getting to it from the town, you can also drive most of the way and then take the steps and path up to the actual cross itself. The number 24 bus will take you about 1/3rd of the way up. You can also continue walking across the mountains to Albir Lighthouse .  Make sure you take water etc with you as there are no services etc at the cross itself.

9) El Mirador de la Punta del Canfali – THE CASTLE, LOOK OUT POINT

The castle/fortress was situated on the big rock that divides the two beaches (Lavante and Poneinte) and its main purpose was to guard against invasions of the Berber pirates.  The castle was thought to have stood here around 1325, this is the highest point in Benidorm, with i ts characteristic white balustrade  it is one of the symbols of the city.   The viewpoint has two parts, a top with benches and rest areas, and another viewing point down quite a  few quite steep steps which offers views closer to the sea.

The Mirador, this area is also known as "Balcony of the Mediterranean." and one of Benidorm Old Towns most visited tourist spots with panoramic 360º views.

10) Visit 'San Jaime' Church (St James) Benidorm Old Town

The church of "Saint James" is dedicated to the patron saint of the town.  It is set at the very top of the Old Town on Canfali hill. It is a Neoclassical building, built in the 18th Century with the typical blue Mediterranean tiled dome.

Inside you´ll find a statue of the Virgen del Sufragio, the well-loved patron saint of Benidorm. The Virgin has her own small chapel containing the little wood sculpture which, as the story goes, was found on a boat adrift on the high seas.

11) Parque de Elche

The famous Elche park is home to hundreds of beautiful white doves and know to many as  Dove Park,  it is also known for its spectacular palm trees.

It is located just in front of Poniente Beach and is close to Benidorm Harbour.  This is a lovely shady park and a great place to sit and people watch. Find more information here

12)  Parque De L’Aiguera – Known as the great centre of Benidorm

This is a long, extensive public park in the neoclassical style, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill. It´s a truly beautiful park and well worth a visit. The park separates the old city from the modern buildings and it has two amphitheatres used for cultural events in the summer months. The Benidorm song festival takes place in the Julio Iglesias auditorium in the park for two days in the month of June, and various other music festivals are held during the year.  The park ends at the Bullring and an enclosure which is used for fairs during fiestas.

Some call it Peacock Island, others Benidorm Rock and the locals refer to it as simply L’illa (the island), if you’ve never made the journey across the bay to explore it, then you really should, because it’s a great day out. Enjoy the amazing views of the Benidorm skyline from the Mediterranean framed by the towering Puig Campana mountain (the one with the hole in the top) it is simply stunning – in fact the whole trip is worth it just for that view. 15) Visit the top of the Gran Bali Hotel

Europe’s tallest hotel, the 52-floor Gran Hotel Bali has a viewing platform that is open to residents and non residents for a small fee, once on the viewing platform you will have spectacular views right across to Calpe, the whole of Benidorm, La Cala and the surrounding area. 

16) Enjoy a Walk in the Sierra Geleda/Helada Natural Park

Sierra Helada  is a natural park and includes the areas of  Benidorm, L'Alfàs el Pì and Altea. Sierra Helada means Ice mountain in Spanish. The name is said to come from the way the cliffs look from the sea on a moonlit night. Fisherman on the Mediterranean Sea found that the rocks looked like an iceberg and also due to the cliffs orientation which creates a colder macro-climate.

It is a protected site with a total surface area of 5,564 Hectares, 4,920 hectares of which are a marine reserve and in these waters are some of the most interesting underwater areas of the Mediterranean peninsular.  The coastline is one of the most beautiful in the Valencian region.  The park also includes three islands: Illot de la Mitjana, the Illot de Benidorm and the Illots  of Olla and la Galera.

17) Pueblo Market

One of the biggest markets in the area, known as "El Pueblo", it is situated near the Servigroup Pueblo Hotel and is held every Sunday and Wednesday, starting around 08.30 until 13.30ish. 18) El Cisne Rastro

One of the best Rastros in the Benidorm area is the El Cisne Rastro, (which in Spanish means the Swan) also known as El Cisne Antiguedades. Only 15 minutes outside Benidorm and near the towns of Alfaz del Pi, Albir and Altea, the El Cisne market is a wonderful place to spend a few hours, not just for the cheap shopping but for the food and entertainment too. 19) BENIDORM SITE SEEING TOURS

Benidorm is a large place with plenty to see and lots of different ways of seeing the sights by Segway, electric scooters or bikes.  Find more information here

20) Open top Buses 

The perfect way to see the city and seafront without walking too far. You can catch the open top bus from the Rincon near Mc Donalds. There are two buses available - The Number 30 goes to Cala Finestrat starting at  “Rincón de L’oix” (opp Grand National Bar) and along the Avd Mediterranean round the town Centre, by the “Parque de Elche”, “Paseo de Poniente” and finally, it gets to  “Cala de Finestrat”.

The number 31 also starts from the “Rincón de Loix” and goes via Avd Atmella de Mar, Avd Severo Ocho. And then, it goes to Albir and Altea beaches. Find full information here.

22) Mundomar   Find 2024 opening times here 

A great day out for all the family Mundomar  is a marine animal park,  It is twinned with the water park Aqualandia which is directly adjacent to it, and shares the same car park.

Many different species can be viewed at Mundomar, including dolphins, sea lions, penguins and meerkats and many more marine and land animals.

There are dolphin, sea lion, and parrot displays several times a day at the park, where visitors can watch trained handlers interacting with the animals, and putting on spectacular shows.

WATER PARKS

23) Aqua Natura -  2024 Open from March 22nd to 3rd November      

Perfect for any age and situated right next to Terra Natura.  There are more than 1.000 meters of exciting slides and exclusive bathing zones for children Aqua Natura has five large sections: the wave pool, the water slides, the kid’s pool, the lighthouse breakwater and the Spa-Sun Deck.

24) Aqualandia - 2024 Open from  25th May to 22nd September

Aqualandia in Benidorm, the first water park built in Spain, opened in 1985. Since then it has been not only one of the largest water parks in the world, but also ranks among those which offer the most attractions and facilities as well as outstanding customer service. Benidorm on the Costa Blanca is known for being a popular tourist destination for British holidaymakers, full of Irish pubs and karaoke bars. But, there’s more to Benidorm than drunk tourists and bad singing!

From beautiful sandy beaches to a historic old town, Benidorm is a vibrant city with plenty of things to do for visitors of all ages. If you’re looking for fun activities in Benidorm you’ll have plenty to choose from.

Where is Benidorm?

Benidorm is located on Spain’s Costa Blanca within the province of Alicante in the Valencian Community. The city is situated on the coast, about 45km northeast of Alicante and 140km south of Valencia.

Is there an airport near Benidorm?

The nearest airport for Benidorm is Alicante Airport, which is approximately 60km away. The best way to get from Alicante Airport to Benidorm is the Alsa bus which runs from 06:00 to 23:00 and takes approximately 50 minutes. A taxi from Alicante to Benidorm takes around 40 mins and costs from €110.

The history of Benidorm

Benidorm has a rich and interesting history that you might not be aware of. There’s evidence of small settlements in Benidorm dating back to around 3000 BC, however it wasn’t until the Moors arrived that the population grew in the area. A war between the Moors and Christians resulted in the Christians reconquering the Valencian region, eventually seeing Benidorm officially recognised in 1325. Over the next few hundred years Benidorm was under constant attack from the Ottoman Empire who constantly attacked the coastal towns in the area looting and enslaving the local population as they went. As the very profitable and famous fishing industry in the area declined, Benidorm turned to the tourism and the Benidorm package holiday is now responsible for a large portion of Spain’s tourist trade income.

Visit La Cruz de Benidorm (Benidorm Cross)

Let’s start with one of the best free things to do in Benidorm. La Cruz de Benidorm is a huge cross on the Sierra Helada hilltop, accessible by hiking or driving. The cross was erected during the 1950s by local residents to bring luck and protection to the town. From the top you have amazing panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas, including the mountains and the sea. This should definitely be top of your list of things to see in Benidorm.

For the super fit looking for some extra fun there’s an annual 10k race to the top called the ‘La Subida a la Cruz’ but beware, it’s typically held in August when temperatures in Benidorm can reach 40 degrees!

Sunbathe on Playa de Levante

The best place to go in Benidorm is naturally one of the amazing beaches! If you’re looking for a clean, family friendly beach you really don’t have to go far from the centre of Benidorm. Playa del Levante beach does get very busy in summer months so if you’re looking for a little more breathing space you may want to consider West Beach, or a little further, Platja de La Cala de Finestrat. Playa de Levante sees thousands of tourists every year however, it’s always maintained to a remarkably high standard with plenty of things to do for all the family, including lots of restaurants and bars nearby.

Admire the view from the Balcon del Mediterraneo

The most visited viewpoint in Benidorm, and one of the most famous viewpoints on the Costa Blanca, is the Balcon del Mediterraneo and it’s not hard to see why! From this viewpoint you can enjoy panoramic view of the beaches of Levante and Poniente and the nearby coast. One of the most popular places to visit in Benidorm for tourists.

Water fun at Aqualandia

Popular Benidorm activities include the many theme parks in the area . If you have kids then you’ll know that you can’t go on a summer holiday without a visit to the nearest w aterpark – especially when one of the world’s best is on your doorstep. Aqualandia Benidorm has plenty of rides for all ages, including those looking for an adrenaline kick! Aqualandia has the highest capsule slide in the world at 33 metres high called Verti-Go. E ntry prices are €39 per adult and €29 for children for a day pass. You can also get reduced prices from local hotels, agents, and leaflets handed out at the airports and shopping malls.

See the animals at Mundomar

Right next door to Aqualandia is the Mundomar Animal Park home to many animals such as exotic birds, aquatic mammals, and monkeys, as well as shows to take in that should keep you and your family entertained for a day. We visited last summer and highly recommend checking out the dolphin show which will be the highlight of your day. If you buy tickets for both M undomar and Aqualandia at the same time you can get a discount.

Get adventurous with watersports

If you’re looking for some adventurous activities in Benidorm, it would be rude not to explore the rich coastal waters that this area has to offer. There are so many little secret coves, beaches, caves, nooks, and crannies to explore it would take you weeks to do it all. There are plenty of places to hire a kayak and go off on your own, or you can book onto a kayaking tour . If you do go kayaking along the Benidorm coastline don’t forget to take some snorkelling gear with you, you won’t be disappointed.

For some more unusual things to do in Benidorm on the water, you could also go on a Benidorm jet ski tour , ride the inflatable banana , or the inflatable fly fish .

Zip line through the forest

For a some fun things to do in Benidorm with kids, TirolinasGo Alicante Forestal Park is a must visit. One of the newest and most popular theme parks in La Nucia-Benidorm, this unique park features fun treetop adventures. A visit takes 2 – 3 hours and you’ll get to experience a variety of zip lines and a Tarzan swing, cross a Tibetan bridge, climb walls and try out many other exciting activities. An ideal day out for everyone, including children from 6 years old and 1.10 meters or above in height.

Join a cycling tour

It’s fair to say the Spanish are very into their cycling! It’s no surprise then that there are many bike excursions around Benidorm and the surrounding areas for all abilities and ages. Both the mountain and coastal cycle routes will treat you to some stunning views that you won’t see from the city centre. Most good cycle tours will typically take up most of the day so eat a hearty breakfast, pack some lunch and plenty of water, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

For a nice downhill bike ride you can book yourself onto the C osta Blanca Downhill Bike Ride. Or if you’d prefer to go at your own pace you can h ire a bike .

Enjoy a show at the Benidorm Palace

If you like live entertainment one of the most fun things to do in Benidorm is to go see a show at the world-famous Benidorm Palace. A great choice for things to do in Benidorm at night, events include everything from Michael Jackson and ABBA tributes, to live orchestras, Vegas style shows, and discos there’s always something going on.

Visit Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada

Parque Natural de la Serra Gelad a is home to almost 14,000 acres, and you can be fooled into thinking you’re in the middle of nowhere even though the skyscrapers of Benidorm are only a few kilometres away. The park is packed full of walks for all abilities including cliff top walks which are extremely popular during the spring and summer months. Make sure you take plenty of water and sunscreen with you as certain areas can be real suntraps. If you’re not a fan of walking, you can try some of the many kayaking excursions instead.

Explore Benidorm’s Old Town

So many people just stick to the centre of Benidorm, but if you don’t venture into Benidorm Old Town you’ll miss a lovely part of the city. The old town is made up of winding, narrow streets with small shops, cafes, bars and restaurants and is a much quieter and more relaxing place than the city centre. There are also some fantastic views over the beaches. For us this is one of the best places to visit in Benidorm.

Eat tapas in Calle Santo Domingo

You can’t visit Spain without sampling the local dishes , and there are plenty of fantastic tapas bars in Benidorm if you venture away from the centre of town. If you’re staying in the city, take a stroll down Calle Santo Domingo, also known as ‘Tapas Ally’. There’s loads of little tapas bars to choose from, one of our favourites is La Cava Aragonesa which is very well known for their delicious selection of pinchos and tapas. After filling yourself with tapas you can work it off with a walk up to Plaza Santa Ana!

Take a trip to Altea

Just beyond the Serra Gelada, 10km kilometres up the coast from Benidorm, is the coastal town of Altea – one of our personal favourites on the Costa Blanca. Altea is well-known for its narrow-whitewashed streets and the sparkling blue doomed roof of the Parròquia de Nostra Senyora del Consol Catholic church at the top of the hill in the old town.

There are lots of fantastic little boutique shops in the old town, as well as more well-known brands all over Altea for those looking for some retail therapy. When it comes to lunchtime you’ll be spoilt for choice with many mouth-watering restaurants, tapas bars, ice-cream parlours, and artisan food shops. If you have a car Altea is less than 20 minutes from Benidorm, or you can take the tram which will also give you great views of the coast along the way.

See the colourful houses of Villajoyosa

Another of our favourite Costa Blanca locations and just a short hop from Benidorm, is the colourful town of Villjoyosa , also known as La Vila Joiosa. Well known for its multi-coloured painted houses (casas pintadas) and narrow streets, Villajoyosa is a great place to have a wander, and grab a drink and a bite to eat. The beaches here are covered in pristine sand with clear turquoise waters, and are much quieter than the busy beaches of Benidorm in the summer months. You can even book yourself on a tour from Benidorm to Villajoyosa with a trip to the Valor chocolate factory included.

An excursion to Guadalest

One of the best excursions in the area is to the extremely pretty Spanish village of Guadalest. It’s approximately 20 minutes outside of Benidorm and easily accessible either by car or by jo ining a tour , either way you get to enjoy the amazing mountain views on the way.

Guadalest dates back to medieval times, with the castle being built in the 11th century, and you can find out more in the museum in the middle of the village. From the top of the village you have the most fantastic views over the bright blue resevoir, the mountain range, and out towards the sea. As with all tourist towns, Guadalest does get very busy in the summer months but there’s ample parking and plenty of great places to eat and drink when you need to rest.

A swim in the Fuentes Del Algar

Last but by no means least on our list of things to do near Benidorm is the Algar waterfalls, the location of the famous Timotei advert. It’s important to point out that this isn’t a water park but an area of natural beauty, where you can swim and paddle in the waterfalls and pools. Even though steps have been taken to try and make the area more accessible you still need to be quite active and it probably wouldn’t suit anyone less mobile or families with pushchairs. The most important item of clothing to take with you, even more so than your bathing suit, are water shoes which can be found on sale for much cheaper in many of the beach shops in Benidorm than in the shops just outside the waterfalls. You cannot picnic next to the waterfalls but there is a picnic area and playpark a short walk behind, or plenty of restaurants outside the gates.

As this is an extremely popular destination with limited parking it’s a good idea to go via tours or buses. E ntry to the waterfalls is €5 per adult and €2 per child.

The free tour begins in Plaza Triangular and goes to the historic center of the city, where we’ll learn all about the origins of this ancient fishing village. You’ll hear about the history of Benidorm as you explore Calle Mayor. Then you’ll see one of the oldest churches in the area in Plaza de Castelar – Iglesia San Jaime y Santa Ana. You’ll get stunning views of the Playa de Levante from the Castle Viewpoint and then onto the Balcon de Mediterranea. This is a fabulous way to get introduced to Benidorm.

4. Get Locked In – and Escape at the lockdown Escape Room Benidorm Costa Blanca

The Lockdown Escape room Benidorm is consistently rated as one of the best Benidorm activities.  You’ll have to escape from zombies, enter a 1960’s cold war thriller to get to the moon, or escape from the Orphanage movie.  It’s a great activity for all ages, but you’ll have to work together to get out of Lockdown.    It’s rated on TripAdvisor as one of the top Benidorm tourist attractions and is one of the best indoor things to do in Benidorm. 

Best Things to do In Benidorm Old Town

Head to Benidorm Old Town for a little more traditional Spain.  Here you’ll find narrow alleyways and cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and traditional Tapas bars.  The best Tapas in Benidorm is here too.  You’ll find shops with huge whole Serrano hams, great coffee shops, and the oldest bar in Benidorm.  This part of the city really is one of the nicest places to visit in Benidorm.  It also contains some of the nicest things to see in Benidorm.

We’ve rounded up the best things to see in Benidorm Old Town

The Old Town is located between the beaches of Levante and Poniente.  This area is known as the Cerro Canfali headlands and is the location of the original fishing village that was Benidorm.

5. Photograph the Balcon del Mediterraneo in Benidorm Old Town

This is a great spot at the end of Benidorm Old Town.  It’s one of the loveliest places to go in Benidorm.  The Placa del Castell is the area that you pass through to get to the famous Balcon del Mediterraneo and possibly even more fabulous views.   You’ll usually find at least one musician to serenade you and convince you to buy his CD.  It marks the spot where the old Castle stood.  It was originally built to defend the Spanish against Algerian pirates in the 14 th , 15 th, and 16 th centuries.

The cannons are symbols of the events that took place during the war of Independence against Napoleon’s French army.  In 1812 the French attempted to seize the town, but the British fleet bombed the tower and did away with the French.

Located just past the Plaza del Castell is the Balcon del Mediterraneo.  Walk down the steps to the small balcony on an outcrop of rocks, you’ll be able to see the Benidorm Island, and both Levante Beach and Poniente Beach as well as a birds-eye view of the marina and a distant view of the Cruz de Benidorm.  Don’t miss out on this – one of the nicest Benidorm places to visit.

6. Visit The Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana in Benidorm Old Town

This traditional church is at the top of Benidorm Old Town.  It’s easy to spot with whitewashed walls and blue-tiled domes.  Inside you’ll find stained glass, paintings, and an ornate ceiling.   The church is dedicated to the patron saint of Benidorm.  The church celebrates the major holidays of Benidorm in November, honoring St James and also staging reenactments of the discovery of the Virgin in 1740.  The small wooden sculpture of the Virgin was, as legend has it, discovered on a boat drifting on the sea.  Now she has her own small chapel.

7. Eat your way along Tapas Alley Benidorm

The Calle Santo Domingo, also known as Tapas Alley, is literally that.  An entire street where you’ll find the best Tapas bars in Benidorm.  Don’t stick to one though, have one or two tapas in each and move on.  Enjoy bite-sized dishes and a small beer or two.

8. Shop till you drop at the Old Town Market

The Benidorm Old Town market is held on Wednesdays.  There is also a Benidorm Sunday market and these are both a good bet for leather, shoes, and carvings.  You’ll probably get a better price here on souvenirs than at the indoor market in Benidorm.

The Best Museums in Benidorm

This small museum, which is free to enter contains model ships and other marine-based exhibits to remember Benidorm’s fishing and maritime past.  It’s next to the harbor on the Paseo de Colon.  It’s one of the more unusual places to see in Benidorm!

10. The House Museum (Casa Museo de Benidorm) Benidorm Old Town

The house museum is the primary art gallery in Benidorm.  House in a 19 th -century house, entrance is free and you’ll find contemporary art and sculptures here.

11. Visit the Benidorm Old Town Beach

Just further on from the Balcon del Mediterraneo, you’ll find Benidorm Old Town’s beach.  Usually quieter than Levante or Poniente Beach this is more of a local vibe. 12. Shop in Benidorm Old Town

If you’re needing to pick up anything from clothes to sunglasses or souvenirs you’ll find the shops in Benidorm Old Town cheaper than those in the Levante Beach and Poniente Beach area.  Benidorm old town shops also cover groceries and there’s also a market for fresh fruit and veg.

Best Things to Do in Benidorm – Sightseeing

13. head to the benidorm beaches.

The two main beaches in Benidorm are Levante and Poniente.   Visit Levante beach and the whole of Benidorm Bay faces to the south onto the Mediterranean Sea, with just Benidorm Island (Isla de Los Periodistas) enhancing the view.   The mountains behind the town protect it and the bay from the winds.  The sea here is warm and clear, the sand is fine and clean.   In total there are around 4 miles of beaches in Benidorm.

Levante Beach

At the eastern end of Benidorm Bay is the busy Levante Beach.  It covers the area from Rincon de Loix to the Castle Rocks at the end of the Old Town.   You’ll not only find sun loungers here but also endless cafes and restaurants.  The water sports in Benidorm are centered here too.  This is not the place to come for peace and quiet.  This is party central.

It’s also the place to go if you’re looking for Benidorm water sports including water skiing, diving, and parasailing.

Mal Pas Beach

Located between Levante and Poniente, this beach sits in a tiny cove, just 120 meters long.

Poniente Beach

Much quieters than Levante beach this is more popular with the locals and families.  It’s around 6 kilometers long, again with plenty of sun loungers and bars on the promenade.   The beach stretches from the harbor in the east to the rocks of the Paseo Tamarindos.  The beach here has a network of boardwalks, enabling wheelchair and mobility scooter users to access the beach more easily.

Playa Cala Ti Ximo Beach

Back at the east end of the bay, beyond the wáter ski cable is Playa Cala Ti Ximo.  The beach is small without facilities, it’s secluded at the foot of the Sierra Helada National Park.  The beach is a combination of sand, rocks, and pebbles.  It’s popular with divers.

14. Visit Benidorm Island

Visible from all the beaches is Benidorm Island (Isla de los Periodistas).  It’s a great spot for a day trip.   (check out our recommendations for day trips from Benidorm here ) You can take a submarine trip from the harbor around the island, land on the Island, and walk to the top for a view back to the mainland, or just swim and sunbathe with a picnic.    You can also take a small boat (golondrina) to visit from the harbor too.

The island is the emblem of Benidorm, with local legend calling it the block of rock missing from the nearby Mount Puig Campana.  The Benidorm myth has a ravine being gashed with a sword, causing a lump of rock to end up in the sea – hence the island.

15. Walk Along the Promenade on Levante Beach Benidorm

The promenade that skirts the town and traverses the length of both beaches is wide, well-paved, and easy to walk.  If your mobility is impaired then there are plenty of mobility scooter rental opportunities here.  On a morning you’re likely to find exercise classes on the sands.

16. Take the Benidorm Tourist Train – Benidorm Train Vision

Running every day of the year, Benidorm Train vision begins its routes at 10 am, with runs every 45 minutes. There are two routes, which both cost €5.50 (€4 for seniors in the winter months) the Poniente Route and the Levante Route.  Each route takes around an hour and stops can be found on the Ave Mediterraneo.  The two routes can be combined at various times throughout the day.

This will take you to the main tourist attractions in Benidorm’s center.    This is one of the top things to do in Benidorm for families.

17. See Benidorm from Above!  Parasailing in Benidorm

18. Visit La Cruz de Benidorm

The best views of Benidorm are to be seen from the famous Benidorm cross.  You’ll either need to walk up here or take a taxi.  The Tourist Train doesn’t run all the way to the cross anymore, the route goes just below it. The cross was placed here in 1961 in a religious mission to redeem the city for her sins.  It became such a Benidorm tourist attraction that when the original wooden cross blew away in 1975 it was replaced.

The hike up is exposed (so don’t do it during the heat of the day), how long it takes depends on how fit you are, and, yes, it is uphill all the way.    Some folks estimate it takes 45 minutes at a good, steady pace.

You can also take a taxi to the cross.  Taxis in Benidorm are metered, so the cost will depend on the traffic.  How much is a taxi to the cross in Benidorm?  It should cost around €5-6 from the Levante Beach area.  You’ll have to walk the final 150 meters or so over uneven ground with steps.

You can walk up here, so it’s one of the best free things to do in Benidorm.

19. Explore Benidorm’s Parks

Take a wander in the parks of Benidorm.

L’Aiguera Park

Between the old town and the new, this park houses two amphitheaters which are used for shows and cultural events.

Parque de Elche

At the end of Poniente Beach, Elche has palm trees and fountains, street vendors will also entertain the kids with puppet shows and the like.  It makes it one of the great family things to do in Benidorm.

20. Benidorm Flea Market – El Cisne Rastro (El Cisne Benidorm)

The Benidorm Flea Market (El Cisne Market Benidorm) is like a car boot sale without cars.  It’s busiest on Sundays but it also opens on Thursdays and Friday.  It’s easy to get to – the number 10 bus stops right outside, or if you’re driving head for Benisol Camping.  If you’re looking for a bargain, you’ll need to be there not long after it opens at 0730-0800, but the crowds start to arrive around 1100.

You’ll find a mix of people selling here (Spanish and European ex-pats) and the same mix of people visiting to buy antiques, electrics, clothing, and the usual car boot paraphernalia.

If all that shopping gets too much for you there are two bars set up here, so you can get a drink.  Go on Thursdays and when you buy a Paella, you’ll get a drink for free.   Take advantage of the free entertainment on Sundays, when you’ll be serenaded by a local favorite, Pablo Bloom.

21. Find the Benidorm TV Series – visit the Benidorm Filming Locations

If you’re a fan of the now 10-year-old Benidorm TV show you can head to some of the sights seen in the show and visit the filming locations.  The Morgan’s Tavern is a popular venue and the Hotel Sol Pelicanos is the hotel in the Benidorm TV series.  Much of the sightseeing in Benidorm is based on the TV program and the hotel and bar related to the Benidorm TV series are some of the interesting places to visit in Benidorm.

Benidorm Nightlife

If you’re looking for things to do in Benidorm at night, then you won’t want for bars and clubs to head to.  You’ll easily find all sorts of bars, from the Rose and Crown, the Tiki Beach, and the numerous Irish Bars.  You can dance and drink throughout the night.  Our favorite for a quiet (cheap) drink is the Cheap and Cheerful Bar.  Cheers!

22. Visit Benidorm Palace for Cabaret

Probably the most famous cabaret on the Costa Blanca is at the Benidorm Palace.  You’ll find flamenco dancers, gymnasts, trapeze artists, and lots and lots of sequins.  There are also singers, comedians and magicians, a laser show and dancing. You can reserve a ticket to the Benidorm Palace here (your ticket comes with a free drink too!)

23. Go to the Benidorm Circus

The circus is open year-round on a Saturday with a show at 1800.  There are no animals involved in this circus, but plenty of acrobats, clowns, and trapeze artists.

24. Enjoy the Many Benidorm Musical Tribute Acts

Check out a few of the many musical tribute acts that make Benidorm their home.  Favorites include the Beatles Show, Adele, and Elvis.   Check out the Beatles Show at the Marina Hotel.

Go to Guadalest

This fabulous little mountain village can be accessed by private tour or public bus.  It’s an hour away from Benidorm, houses picturesque views, more museums than you can shake a stick at, historic buildings, and a plethora of cafes and restaurants.  This is one of the easiest places to visit by bus from Benidorm.  Read our article here on how to get to make a Guadalest day trip and make the most of your time there.  You can also book your trip to Guadalest now! Visit the Valor Chocolate Factory

Another one of the great things to do around Benidorm is to visit a Chocolate factory.  The oldest chocolate factory in Spain is just a few kilometers south of Benidorm.  Valor Chocolate has been making chocolate since 1881 and you can visit the factory, which is housed in a 19 th -century country estate.   >> Boo k your trip to the Valor Chocolate Factory now .

The factory runs free 45 minutes tours throughout the day, they run at 10.00, 11.00, 16.00, 17.00, or 18.00 (it’s closed from 12.00 until 16.00).  Try and visit during the week as weekends tend to be busier.

Check Out the Algar Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens are one of the great days out in Benidorm if you’re a keen gardener.  Located in Algar.  The botanical gardens were started by a plumber with a love of cacti.  There are now more than 500 species of cacti and other plants here, grouped into specific areas.  Check out the glorious waterfalls close by. >> Find out more here.

Get in a Game of Golf near Benidorm

If you’re a golfer it’s easy to organize Benidorm days out.  The keen golfer has two options within easy reach of Benidorm.  Las Rejas is a 9-hole par 3 pitch and putt course close to Poniente Beach.  You’ll find lots of families here.  The more serious Villaitana resort has two 18-hole courses that were designed by Jack Nicklaus and his family.  There’s a par 72 course for the more serious golfer and a shorter par 62 course too.  There are 15 golf courses on the Costa Blanca if that’s not enough for you.

Head to the Sierra Helada Natural Park, Benidorm

If you like nature, then one of the cheap things to do in Benidorm is to head to the National Park.  The coastline further along from Levante beach houses the Sierra Helada Natural Park.  Here you’ll find limestone rocks, cliffs, and pine trees.  There’s a paved road that you can walk up, and challenging walks to the highest point of the park which is 300 meters above sea level.

The city of Benidorm is famous, among other reasons, for its two large beaches, located on both sides of the Mediterranean Balcony . The Levante Beach is situated on Benidorm’s east side and extends more than 2km down the coast .

Its golden sand is bathed by clear Mediterranean waters. And similar to Poniente Beach, Benidorm’s other main beach, Levante enjoys a southern orientation, ensuring great sunbathing throughout the entire day .

The Levante Beach area was the first part of Benidorm to be developed for tourism . Because of this, it has the greatest number of services and amenities. This is also where you will find "Benidorm's guiri area” (British nightlife area), where numerous discos and pubs are located.

PLAYA DE PONIENTE

Poniente Beach is Benidorm’s other main beach and its longest, at 3km. It begins at the rocky Tossal de la Cala hillside and extends all the way to the port .

While not as developed (or overdeveloped) as Levante, you will still find lots of restaurants and bars along the modern and pleasant beach promenade.

Poniente is the newer side of Benidorm and is where you’ll find the city’s latest skyscraper designs , including the tallest of them all. The Intempo building towers over the rest of the skyline with its 198 meter height and 47 floors.

Another curious part of Poniente Beach that shouldn’t be missed is the Fontanelles, a spring that erupts with freshwater just 10 meters from the waterfront .

BALCÓN DEL MEDITERRÁNEO

The Balcón del Mediterráneo (Mediterranean Balcony) is one of the most iconic spots in all of Benidorm . Also known as the "Mirador del Castillo” (castle lookout), it is situated on a small rocky peninsula between the Levante and Poniente beaches.

As you might have guessed by the name “Castle Lookout,” this is the same location where a fortress once stood . For centuries, this strategic position helped the inhabitants defend themselves from frequent pirate attacks.

Undoubtedly, the Balcony of the Mediterranean is a wonderful lookout where you can admire the turquoise waters of the coast of Alicante and take in the great views of Benidorm’s beaches. Make sure not to skip it since it’s one of the best things to do in Benidorm .

You can't leave Benidorm without getting lost in the narrow streets of the old quarter and discovering its huge contrast to the new part of town. Strolling around aimlessly will allow you to get to know such picturesque streets as the traditional Calle Santo Domingo, better known as Calle de los Vascos (street of the Basques).

This is one of the most lively areas of the old town and where it’s easy to find a ton of tapas and their smaller Basque cousin, pintxos . This is a great place to get some traditional Spanish food.

Through the old town’s narrow streets you will also discover several squares, such as the Plaza de Santa Ana and Plaza del Castillo as well the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana , the oldest in Benidorm.

However, if you are looking for views, go to the Plaza Castelar to take in the endless Poniente Beach . Opposite of the plaza is the viewpoint of Sant Jaume , also known as the "viewpoint of the Mediterranean" from which you get idyllic views of the Levante Beach .

With 200,000 m 2 of surface area and 15 water attractions , visiting Aqualandia is a fantastic option for families with children but also thrill seekers . In fact, each of these attractions is rated by intensity and age. In addition, the park has fast food restaurants as well as picnic areas.

However, one of the most outstanding details of this water park is its Verti-Go slide, which, together with the free fall , is the highest in Europe. Without a doubt, Aqualandia is the perfect destination for the most adventurous travelers.

VIEWPOINT OF THE CROSS OF BENIDORM

The Mirador de la Cruz de Benidorm is located at the highest point of the Serra Gelada Nature Park (217 meters above sea level). It offers some of the best panoramic views of Benidorm .

The cross that gives it its name was placed there by Franciscan monks in 1961 with the purpose of ridding the city of its sins - such as the use of bikinis!

Today, however, it offers visitors one of the most beautiful sunsets in town , especially when the sunlight reflects on the surface of the sea.

To get to the viewpoint, you can walk uphill for 40 minutes from the Rincón de Loix neighborhood or drive to the top.

MAL PAS COVE

Next to the old town of Benidorm, framed by the Balcony of the Mediterranean on one side and the port on the other , is the Cala del Mal Pas. The beach was created during the construction of the port in the first half of the twentieth century. In fact, the sand is a leftover from the dredging. The result is an intimate 100 meters long beach that is lined with palm trees.

Today, it is an excellent urban cove that is great for snorkeling , especially in the rocky part of Punta Canfali.

TERRA MITICA

Terra Mitica is an amusement park with 33 rides, including impressive roller coasters - such as Magnus Colossus and Titanide . If rides and roller coasters aren’t your thing, there are also several different performances and shows to keep you entertained.

Opened in the year 2000, Terra Mitica has a theme that’s based on the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, specifically Egyptian, Greek and Roman . In fact, the park boasts a multitude of replicas of monuments and bridges in order to create an immersive experience.

Terra Mitica is definitely the best theme park to visit in Benidorm .

VIEWPOINT OF THE VIRGEN DEL MAR CHAPEL

The Mirador de la Ermita Virgen del Mar is another one of the best lookout points in Benidorm . It’s located high up on the hillside at the western end of Benidorm, near the Roman archaeological site "Castellum Tossal de la Cala" . From here, you get incredible views of Poniente Beach and can see all of Benidorm from end to end.

There are two ways to reach the viewpoint: on foot or by car. If you choose to arrive with your own vehicle, you should know that there is no parking at the top of the chapel, so you will have to leave your car next to the park on the hillside.

Although this urban sandy beach belongs to the municipality of Finestrat, its proximity to Benidorm makes it worth a visit. This rocky and unspoiled bay is characterized by its beautiful 200 meters long coastline .

Here you will find everything from restaurants and bars to jet ski and boat rentals. It also has its own paid parking.

Terra natura.

Terra Natura has been designed for the animal lover . This "immersion zoo" , also known as a new generation animal park, recreates the habitat of each of the species living there.

In this way, visitors can learn about animal behavior and come into contact with them. There are also different educational proposals and outdoor activities for the whole family to learn and have fun. In short, there are more than 1,500 animals of 200 different species to marvel at.

RACÓ DE CONILL COVE

Cala Racó de Conill is a spectacular small nudist beach which is actually considered one of the best beaches in the province of Alicante . This small rocky cove, featuring calm and crystalline waters , can be ideal to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The cove has its own beach bar, parking area right next to it and spectacular panoramic views. However, it does not have lifeguard equipment.

AQUA NATURA

Located next to Terra Natura, Aqua Natura is a much smaller water park than Aqualandia (40,000 m 2 compared to 200,000 m 2 ) and is ideal for children to move from one attraction to another without getting tired . Another advantage is that Aqua Natura is not as crowded as other water parks .

Aqua Natura is made up of water slides, wave pools, unique attractions and a large number of activities for children , as well as beach bars, jacuzzi and spa area.

BENIDORM'S NIGHTLIFE

Benidorm is, of course, known for its endless and lively nightlife . What's more, the city offers a wide variety of nightclubs, British pubs and small bars in several different areas, such as the old town, the Levante Beach promenade, Esperanto Street and the British party area - Gerona, Ibiza and Lepanto streets.

L'AIGÜERA PARK & TOWN HALL

Designed by the architectural studio of Ricardo Bofill in the 1980's, this green space houses the Benidorm bullring at one end and the town hall at the other . The town hall was built in 2003 with avant-garde approach which is quite visible.

Also, within the park is the Julio Iglesias Auditorium and sculpture , where numerous events are held every year.

L'Aigüera Park is home to a total of 120,000 m 2 , including some modernist architecture to admire while you take a stroll, sheltered by the shade of the palm trees that grow on both sides.

Located under the Sierra Helada mountains and inaugurated in 1996, Mundomar was conceived as an animal park for the entertainment of children, adults and families . During your visit you will be able to meet different species of mammals, birds and reptiles, such as penguins and parrots.

Shows and animal experiences are some of the additional activities that can be enjoyed in the park. From swimming with sea lions to taking pictures or having an encounter with dolphins , your family will have a great time at Mundomar.

ALMADRABA & TIO XIMO COVES

Isolated and surrounded by nature , these two coves located in the Serra Gelada Nature Park contrast with the buildings that rise just behind them . Despite this, the area stands out for its tranquility, where the sounds of people or cars are not appreciated.

So if you feel the sudden urge to escape the hustle and bustle, both Cala Almadraba and Cala Tío Ximo will be ideal.

The sea beds of both are spectacular due to their rocky formation . However, if your plan is to go diving, paddle surfing or kayaking, our recommendation is Cala Tío Ximo, as it has direct road access. Choose Cala Almadraba for resting or snorkeling.

BENIDORM ISLAND

This rocky outcrop is easily recognizable due to its characteristic slope. Legend has it that the Benidorm Island is actually a fragment of the mountain Puig Campana and that it was a giant who broke it and threw it into the sea .

This seemingly out of place island is located in the center of the bay of the same name and is now part of a nature reserve . Although the island itself is actually uninhabited , there is an unlicensed restaurant that dates back to the 1960s when it was used as a home for the island's caretaker. Currently, there is a plan to transform the restaurant into an environmental interpretation center .

To get to the island, take one of the "golondrinas" or tourist boats that leave from the Port of Benidorm . The voyage takes 15 minutes and the round trip ticket costs between 15 and 19€. The short getaway to Benidorm Island is worth it because of its small rocky cove and seabed that is teaming with aquatic life.

PORT OF BENIDORM

Benidorm subsisted as a small fishing village until the 1960s . Therefore, one of the things to see in Benidorm is its port, first built in the mid-20 th century and expanded in the late 20 th century.

Nowadays, the port mainly houses recreational boats and those known as "golondrinas" , the boats for tourists that sail to Benidorm Island, Tabarca Island and Calpe . In addition, next to this key point of the city you will find the Maritime Club and Mal Pas Beach .

GRAN HOTEL BALI

Beyond the multiple natural spots from which to enjoy the wonderful views of Benidorm, you can always soar up the 186 meters high Gran Hotel Bali , a luxurious 52-story hotel complex. This skyscraper, which offers a 360-degree view for a price of 6€ ( 3€ for guests of the hotel ), was the highest in Spain until 2006.

Currently, it offers its clients wellness treatments, a fitness area and swimming pools, as well as spaces for events.

BENIDORM MARKETS

Visiting one of the city's markets is another activity that should not be missing on your list of things to do in Benidorm . The city offers different alternatives depending on the time of the week, the place and the products you are looking for.

For starters, in the Rincón de Loix Market , next to the Pueblo Hotel , you can find clothes and fresh produce every Wednesday and Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm. On the other hand, if your goal is to get to know local fruits and vegetables, we recommend the Foietes Market , which takes place on Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 2 pm.

Consider also visiting the Benidorm Flea Market - popularly known as the Mercadillo del Cisne - 4km from the center, where every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm you will find antiques and second-hand products. Or the Les Nits del Castell flea market , located in the castle of Benidorm, where every summer traders show off their handicrafts.

Excursions from Benidorm

Guadalest & algar springs.

Discover the Castle of Guadalest and the corners of this historic village in this full day excursion . Once you have toured the town, you can go down to the village of Callosa and visit the fantastic Cascadas del Algar (Algar springs) and its pools , a natural space where tranquility reigns.

Or you can also choose to explore each of these destinations separately, dedicating a full day to Guadalest and a morning to the Algar Waterfalls .

The 4-star Cimbel is one of the hotels in Benidorm that you can’t miss if you want to be on the Levante beachfront, which is probably the most sought after location in all of town .

And what’s even better is that the prices of this accommodation are simply great . The rooms are styled in a clean and modern aesthetic and the hotel offers all basic services and amenities at an unbeatable location and bargain prices .

HOTEL SOL COSTABLANCA

If you are looking for a hotel in Benidorm’s Levante beachfront that’s for adults-only , then the Sol Costablanca is a great choice. This 4-star accommodation offers guests an outdoor pool and rooms with private balconies, some of them with views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Here’s a list of the 15 best things to do in Benidorm ( Spain ), along with famous landmarks, museums, and other points of interest.

Benidorm is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante together with nearby Torrevieja and Calpe . Every year, millions of visitors come here to enjoy the sun and healthy climate that has become famous worldwide. 

In this article, I’m sharing some of the best places to visit in Benidorm as well as interesting facts and attractions that shouldn’t be missed while visiting the city. 

Terra Mítica

Terra Mítica is a fantastic theme park located in Benidorm. Divided into five zones (Egypt, Greece, Roma, Iberia, and Mediterranean Islands), the park is apt for all ages and includes an onsite hotel.

Opened in 2000, the park includes themed attractions, from roller coasters to boat drops and flying simulators. The park holds 25 rides in all. It is open every day from June to September and selected days in April/May and October/November.

Balcón del Mediterráneo

This iconic lookout point sits between the beaches of Poniente and Levante. The name dates back to 1863, when the first President of the Spanish Republic, Emilio Castelar, visited and called it the Balcony of the Mediterranean.

Nothing more than a pentagon-shaped peninsula, it sits at the end of Rambla Nova, 40 meters up from the ocean. You get a wonderful view from the balcony, and it’s a popular point for locals on their strolls. Touching the balustrades is said to bring good luck.

Sierra Helada

Sierra Helada is, in one word, breathtaking. Its 400-meter cliffs rise over the Mediterranean, creating quite a scene. Stretching out over 5,600 hectares, there is plenty to explore among its coves, plant life, and wildlife.

You can hike across the Serra Gelada in about four hours, a beautiful natural setting for a day spent under the sun and shade of the trees.

Poniente Beach

The Poniente Beach is the less crowded of Benidorm’s famous beaches. As Benidorm’s largest beach, it has an area of about 3.5 kilometers and an average width of 75 meters, meaning there is space for everyone.

You’ll find tourists, families, and locals together on this beach, enjoying all the facilities on offer, from transportation to showers to restaurants and water sports.

The beach even includes platforms on the water, trampolines, and beach volleyball. The sand is warm and golden, the water cool and blue, and the whole thing backed by Benidorm’s famous line of tall resorts.

Stroll through Casco Antiguo

Benidorm’s Casco Antiguo is a beautiful spot that has managed to retain a bit of the authentic feel of the city before it became a tourist magnet. The white houses and beautiful blue-domed church sit on cobblestone streets, filled with shops and cafes.

Take a stroll through the Casco Antiguo, which is beautiful by day or night, being sure to visit Plaza Canalejas, the church, Plaza Castelar, the Cañones, and the rest of the city’s monuments.

Aqualandia water park sits next door to the equally popular Mundomar, a marine animal park. This paradise of water features loads of attractions, all of which are filled with water sourced from the sea.

Aqualandia is one of the largest water parks in Europe, featuring loads of slides, playgrounds, pools, and spots to relax. Open for 30 years, it is also one of Benidorm’s most popular attractions.

Playa de Levante

Levante Beach is one of the most famous in all of Europe and accordingly crowded. Benidorm’s most popular beach, it is two kilometers long, stretching between Punta Pinet and Punta Canfali.

Despite its busy nature, it is a beautiful spot to sunbathe. The esplanade along the beach is full-on movement, all the time, busy with restaurants, bars, and tourists.

La Cruz de Benidorm

The Cross of Benidorm is a popular viewpoint located at the top of the Sierra Helada, standing tall at 438 meters above sea level. The hike from town is pleasant, although you must pack your own water and snacks as there are no services at the top.

You also have the option of driving almost to the top and scaling only the steps to get to the monument. The Cross was installed in 1962, although the original was made of wood and carried up in a procession of villagers, a response to the initial wave of tourism that hit the town.

The current metal cross was erected in 1975 and has since become a symbol of Christianity in the town. 

Iglesia de San Jaime y Santa Ana

The Church of Saint James and Saint Anne is the most important church in Benidorm. Dating back to the 18 th  century, the Neoclassical façade is gorgeous, whitewashed with mustard-colored accents.

Located in the upper part of the Casco Antiguo, it was renovated in 1912, the last time that great works were carried out. In this church, the people of Benidorm celebrate the most important festivals of the city, including Semana Santa, the fiestas patronales, and the day of San Jaime and Santa Ana.

Low Festival

The Low Festival is a rock, indie, and electronica festival held in Benidorm every year in summer. The festival takes place on grounds located 45 kilometers outside of the city.

The lineup is international, featuring huge global acts like Bastille, ultra-famous Spanish indie groups like Vetusta Morla, and an assortment of lesser-known groups and DJs.

You can buy a one or three-day ticket, which allows entrance to all of the festival’s stages, or spring for a VIP pass that allows you to skip the lines, access special sections to watch the concerts, and access the VIP food stands. There is also a VIP Pool Ticket, which includes all of the above plus access to an Olympic pool.

Villajoyosa

At 20 minutes from Benidorm, Villajoyosa makes a perfect day trip. Best-known for the rainbow of houses that line the beach, Villajoyosa is much more relaxed than Benidorm proper.

The best day to visit is Thursday, when there is an open-air market next to the tram stop. Shop everything from produce to clothes and artisan crafts. The town is also the site of one of the most famous chocolate factories in Spain.

The Valor chocolate factory offers guided visits, fun for families and children. The ancient defense towers are also worth a visit, as they mark the past of this oft-attacked village.

Eat tapas at Tapas Alley

Tapas Alley is famous in Benidorm as a spot to pop in and out of bars and enjoy the tapas tasting experience. Starting at the Plaza de la Constitution and running along with Santo Domingo, Tapas Alley features more restaurants than you will be able to taste in one go.

The trick is to have one tapa and one drink in each establishment. Some of the best ones are La Cava Aragonesa, the Aurrera bars, and Braseria, where they’re serving some of the best Spanish food in town. 

Try some water sports

Benidorm’s coastal location and mild air and water temperatures make it a perfect place to vacation, but also to practice water sports. You may imagine adventure and danger when you think of water sports, but Benidorm offers just about everything, for all ages.

Pile onto an inflatable banana boat with your family; parasail from the sky down into a deck on the bay; speed along on a jet ski; snorkel; or take a guided kayak tour. There is something for everyone.

Benidorm Island

Sailing out to Benidorm Island is a popular boat trip in the area. An easy glide from the old town, or from Levante Beach in the summer, it is a natural reserve and home to many species of birds and flora.

You can find European storm petrels, peregrine falcons, and Sardinian warblers, just to name a few. It sits about two miles off the mainland.

Hike to Puig Campana

Puig Campana is the second-highest peak in Valencia, standing at 1,410 meters. Its topography makes it even more spectacular—the steep walls create an impossibly craggy face.

The mountain is great for both hiking and rock climbing. The name means “hill of the bell” and local legend says that a giant kicked the mountain and caused a gap in the ridge, and the piece that tumbled down became the island L’Illa Benidorm.

The circuit to walk Puig Campana takes you up to 884 meters and begins at the Moli fountain in Finestrat. It takes about three hours.

Overall we prefer Benidorm, but we think Alicante’s old town is more interesting. It’s best to visit both cities and form your own opinion.

Oh yes, without a doubt! Benidorm is well known for its vivid nightlife scene and parties lasting up to the early morning hours. It’s also a very popular spot for hen/stag parties, especially for UK folks.

Benidorm is a perfect destination for unforgettable holidays, unwinding weekends, and one-day trips from nearby towns. It’s even a great home base for longer stays to slowly discover Costa Blanca. Without rushing you’ll be able to see the most popular Benidorm attractions in one day. But if you want to get to know and experience the city better, we recommend staying for at least 3 days.

Benidorm has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers (30°C+) and mild winters (around 15°C). If really high temperatures and crowds don’t bother you – visit during the high season from June to August. If you prefer quieter times and lower temperatures choose any month in the lower season. Personally, we think spring and autumn are the best time to go to Benidorm. 

Benidorm Beaches

Sunbathing on one of the Benidorm beaches is a must while in the city during warm days. Fortunately, there are plenty to choose from so everyone will find a perfect beach for himself. Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente are the two main beaches in Benidorm, divided by the port and the Mediterranean Balcony in the middle.

Levante Beach

Levante Beach (es. Platja de Llevant) is the largest beach in Benidorm, right next to the most touristic and partying part of town. It’s about 2km long, filled with many bars, restaurants, cafeterias, and beach clubs. Most of Benidorm’s hotels are located around Playa de Levante.

Poniente Beach

Poniente Beach (es. Platja de Ponent) is the second-largest beach in Benidorm. It’s definitely less crowded, as it’s located in a quieter part of the city. For this reason, it’s particularly popular with older people. Along it, there’s a good selection of restaurants and cafeterias.

Playa de Finestrat

There are also other, smaller beaches around to explore, such as the beautiful Playa de Finestrat (es. Platja de La Cala de Finestrat). This one is located about 3km from the city center and it’s not as busy as the previous two. From this beach, you can also hike up to the Torre d’Aguiló (which we already mentioned in a post about Villajoyosa) and admire spectacular views over the coastline.

Cala Tio Ximo

Cala Tío Ximo Beach is another Benidorm beach worth mentioning. It’s a small, 60m-long beach, located not far from Playa de Levante. The beach is walled by cliffs, which gives it an interesting vibe. Cala Tio Ximo is a popular place for snorkeling. You can get there on foot, or by car.

Things to do in Benidorm Old Town

There are plenty of things to do in Benidorm Old Town and its surroundings. It’s located between Ponent and Llevant Beach, and it’s the complete opposite of the modern part of the city. There you’ll find small streets filled with cafeterias, restaurants, and boutique hotels. While there, don’t forget to visit Tapas Alley located on Calle Santo Domingo, and try classic Spanish dishes like patatas bravas or gambas al pil pil. Let’s go and take a closer look at all the things to do in Benidorm Old Town. 

Mediterranean Balcony & Placa del Castell

Mediterranean Balcony (es. Balcó de la Mediterrània) without a doubt is one of the most beautiful places in Benidorm Old Town. It’s a snow-white viewing platform between Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente. The mix of blue sea and white facade gives a truly captivating effect. The Mediterranean Balcony offers spectacular views of the bay and the town’s skyline. Believe us, this place should be your no. 1 on your list of things to do in Benidorm.

To get to the Mediterranean Balcony you have to walk through the Placa del Castell, a place where Benidorm Castle once stood. Currently, it’s a place filled with musicians and various sellers.

Benidorm Island

Benidorm Island is a small piece of land “drifting” on the sea, which just can’t be missed from any of Benidorm’s beaches. Visiting an island can be a great option for a one-day trip from Benidorm Old Town. To get there you need to take a boat from a port. When you arrive you can explore Benidorm Island Trail – it takes only around 10-15 minutes to reach the top. From the viewpoint, you can admire spectacular views over the coastline. Bring food for a picnic, a bathing suit, snorkel gear, and enjoy your day away from a bustling city.

The Cross of Benidorm

Another great thing to do in Benidorm is to visit the Cross of Benidorm (es. La Creu de Benidorm). It’s located on a hill above the city, on the edge of the Sierra Helada Natural Park. On the top, you’ll find a huge metal cross, and great views – you can look over the entire Benidorm, sandy beaches, mountains and sea. You can stretch your legs and get there by foot, or by car (but only part of the route, because the rest has recently been closed for unauthorized vehicles by the city authorities).

Other things to do in Benidorm, Spain

Sierra helada natural park.

If you are up for a walk in nature, Sierra Helada Natural Park is a perfect place to do that, so don’t forget to add it to your list of things to do in Benidorm. From the entrance, up to the lighthouse, you can enjoy beautiful landscapes. High cliffs, mountains, and Mediterranean Sea views, coastline – it’s all here. The path is very easy and well maintained so almost everyone will be able to enjoy this route.

Benidorm Palace

Another option for nightlife lovers is Benidorm Palace as it offers a fantastic show (supposedly, because we haven’t seen it) full of colors, dancing, and singing. The show takes place every weekend. Fiestas Mayores Patronales de Benidorm

Las Fiestas Mayores Patronales is an annual festival that celebrates Benidorm patron saints: Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime Apostle. The fiesta lasts for six days and always begins on the second weekend of November. If you will be in Benidorm at this time it’s worth taking a look at this yet another nightlife experience. Especially on the last day when a colorful parade takes place which ends up with fireworks.

Our opinion about Benidorm

We lived in Benidorm for 8 weeks (October & November) during our first season of digital nomad life. During that time we were able to notice how the city was slowly going to sleep, emptying from huge crowds of holidaymakers. However, even in November it was quite busy, especially during weekends, filled with many Brits. It definitely looks like Benidorm is a great place to party all year round and the nightlife never ends! We can’t even imagine what it looks like in the months like July or August. To be frank, Benidorm itself didn’t really steal our hearts, but overall we found our stay there very pleasant. We also think it’s an excellent starting point for discovering Costa Blanca .
