All the calculator needs is the journey distance, the price of the fuel and the MPG rating of your car and we'll do the rest.

How to calculate the journey/fuel cost of a journey?

Calculating the fuel cost of a journey does require you to know a few variables, namely your vehicles economy in either MPG (miles per gallon) or l/100 (litres per 100km), the distance of the journey and the price you paid for the fuel. From here it's simply dividing the journey distance by the vehicles economy to get the amount of gallons required to complete the journey, converting gallons to litres followed by multiplying this resulting figure by the price per litre of fuel.

The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

What is the formula to calculate car journey cost.

Unlike other websites, we want to educate and provide you with the formula step by step so that you can do it yourself.

Firstly, calculate how many miles to the litre, which must be converted into US Gallons by dividing the cars MPG by 4.54609188.

i.e. Miles Per Litre = 40 MPG ÷ 4.54609188

After, we multiply the miles covered by the cost of fuel and then divide by the miles per litre. We then divide the result again by 100.

Why you should know how much fuel you will need and the cost before buying gas for your trip

With the price of gas going up daily and your buying power steadily declining due to inflation, the unfortunate truth is that it is unwise to plan a road trip without first calculating the cost of gas. After all, gas is not the only thing you will need.

Before you plan your trip, you need to recognize that there can be lots of unexpected expenses when you are away from home. As such careful planning and a detailed budget are most important for a worry-free trip. You can typically expect to spend money on:

Process used by our fuel cost calculator to find how much gas you will need as well as the cost of your trip

To calculate how much fuel you will need, here is the formula used by our fuel cost calculator:

Fuel amount= Distance / Fuel efficiency

For instance, if you wish to travel 100 km with a vehicle with a fuel efficiency of 5 kilometers per liter , substitute these variables into the formula above:

Fuel amount= 100 / 5 = 20 liters

Our calculator also uses the amount of fuel and the cost of gas in your area to calculate the total cost of your trip. For this, we use the following formula:

Trip cost = Fuel amount × Fuel price

So using the amount of fuel given in the above problem, if the price of gas was $7 , then to calculate the amount of money needed for the trip, we put these values into the formula, and we get:

Trip cost = 20 × 7 = $140

What is the best way to take a road trip on a small budget?

If you are planning a road trip for your vacation, but your budget is relatively small, here are a few things you can do:

• Go during the offseason. Vacation rentals cost less in the offseason. This price reduction is because the demand for these places is relatively low during the off-season. So owners and agents reduce the price to attract more visitors.
• Take a road trip with others willing to share the cost. Sharing the cost will reduce your individual payment. For instance, if the fuel price for the trip is $1000, you will pay less by splitting that cost five ways between friends. You can do this using our gas cost calculator .
• Try camping to reduce the cost of accommodation. Campsites cost less than the average hotel.
• Research fun, entertaining activities that you and your friends can do free of cost or for a small fee. For example, use a map to explore with your team rather than hiring a tour guide.

Due to the additional costs for items such as food and accommodation for several days, a road trip across great distances can cost significantly higher for long-distance trips than flying. This can, of course, be affected by these factors:

• Number of persons on the trip;
• Whether the cost is shared or not; and
• Type of accommodation used.

How do I calculate fuel cost?

To calculate the fuel cost, we use one of the following formulas:

• Fuel cost = (Distance / Efficiency per gallon) × Cost per gallon
• Fuel cost = (Distance / [100 × Consumption per 100 mi]) × Cost per gallon

Use the first formula if you have the car's efficiency in miles per gallon (mpg).

On the other hand, we use the second formula if the consumption is in gallons per 100 miles.

How do I calculate fuel cost per month?

To find the fuel cost per month:

• Multiply the distance per day by the number of days per month.
• Divide this by your vehicle’s efficiency per gallon.
• Multiply the answer by the price per gallon.

How much does a gallon of gas weigh?

A gallon of gasoline weighs approximately 6.073 lbs in the US.

Gasoline contains additives that affect its final weight. These vary from country to country. As such, it is impossible to give an exact weight worldwide.

The formula for calculating fuel consumption used in this online fuel consumption calculator is:

Fuel consumption = Fuel used / Distance travelled

The result depends on the metrics used as input: miles per gallon if the input was in miles and gallons, and km per liter if the input was in kilometers and liters.

Additionally, the fuel consumption calculator will output the fuel cost per mile or fuel cost per km , depending on the metric units selected, as well as miles per $ / km per $. These are very useful when estimating your fuel costs and can help you predict your expenses easier on a future trip. For example, if you notice that your usually spend $0.15 per mile (15 cents per mile), then if you know you will be travelling for 200 miles, you can calculate the cost of the trip by multiplying 200mi x $0.15 = $30 for a 200 mile trip. Similarly, for km.

    Different ways to calculate fuel economy

Fuel efficiency , or fuel economy, can be a tricky concept. Understanding that is key for the correct interpretation and comparison of gas consumption estimates such as those produced by this calculator.

For example, say you want to compare two types of cars: A and B. You put two researches, one American and one French, to the task, with the first using kilometers per liter as an efficiency metric, while the second using liters per km. You have each researcher record the efficiency of 2 cars of each type, or, alternatively, the consumption of one and the same car in two different environments (the data available is the same for both), and the results recorded by them look like so:

Average above means the arithmetic mean . The US engineer will see that for type A the average is 2.5 while for type B it is just 2.0, concluding that type A is more efficient than type B as it can cover a greater distance with a liter of diesel, petrol, gas, etc. The French will see that for type A the average is 0.625 while for type B it is 0.5 and will conclude that type B is more efficient than type A, as the car will use less fuel to cover the same distance. The two researchers would come to different conclusions as they are using different metrics!

But who is right in the above example? The fuel consumption calculation is correct in both cases. The issue is what we care about when we calculate fuel consumption and fuel efficiency / fuel usage. Most people would argue that we care about how much fuel we would need to cover a given distance . In such a case the French researcher is correct as the average is misleading the US researcher. Here is an explanation why: if you take both cars of type A and want to cover 100 kilometers with each of them, you would need not 200 / 2.5 = 80 liters, but 125 liters of petrol (100 liters for the first car and 25 liters for the second). The French will get it right by multiplying 200 x 0.625 = 125. For type B both researchers will correctly estimate that 100 liters will be required for the same task. Therefore, type B is more efficient than type A.

However, if you define efficiency as covering the greatest distance given a certain fuel amount , then the US researcher would be correct. If we give each car of type A a liter of fuel, they will cover 5 kilometers combined while giving each car of type B a liter of fuel, they will cover only 4 km combined. It follows that type A is more efficient than type B using this definition. Note that the km/l average is not misleading here, as it is 2.5 km/l, and 2 x 2.5 = 5, which is correct.

The above is an illustration of why when using our fuel consumption calculator or similar tools it is important to keep track of the end goal and define the question at hand precisely before measuring and making conclusions. It is also a lesson on applying appropriate data transformations. The arithmetic average is not invariant to monotonic transformations which becomes an issue when averaging the performance of two or more vehicles or when averaging the performance of a single vehicle in different situations . For example, highway fuel consumption and city drive consumption could be used in place of Car 1 and Car 2 in the example table above and produce the same result.

The car example uses as a basis one from Hand D. (1994) "Deconstructing Statistical Questions", Journal of the Royal Statistical Society , Series A, Vol.157-3:317-356. Fuel consumption calculations are performed using this online calculator.

    How to achieve better fuel efficiency?

In brief, the best way to achieve better fuel economy is to:

• Keep your car and tyres well-maintained
• Avoid frequent acceleration and deceleration
• Drive at a lower overall average speed
• Avoid or reduce the use of air conditioning
• Reduce the weight of the vehicle by not carrying excess cargo

How to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save money on fuel

With fuel prices on the rise, it is becoming increasingly important to find ways to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

1. Check your tyre pressure regularly

The power of community: How DDP Yoga helped one man heal and inspire millions

Diamond Dallas Page has made a living out of helping others.

The World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famer has been changing lives for over two decades with his DDPYoga program, a fusion of yoga for men who “wouldn’t be caught dead” doing yoga. 

He developed it after he suffered a broken back, and soon realized that his workout regimen couldn't just enhance lives, it could save them. 

Since 2004, Page has been seeing his program work miracles. We'll look at this Jersey Shore boy’s most inspirational stories through our Transformation Tuesday feature. All have a story of how DDP YOGA changed, and in many cases, saved their lives. 

Arthur Boorman would be the poster boy for DDPY and help put DDP YOGA on the map.

Why Arthur Boorman: "He was a disabled veteran, morbidly obese and relegated to thinking of himself as a piece of furniture," Page said. "After we spoke a few times, I told him ‘I don’t need to have an MD at the end of DDP to know if you don’t change your lifestyle bro you’re not going to be around five or six years from now.’ That scared the hell out of him - I gave him some encouragement and after two weeks he had lost 20 pounds (more than I expected). He posted a couple grainy videos on YouTube about his experience and I told him if you’re going to film everything you’re going to need to get a better camera..and looking back I’m so glad I did that! Thank god he and his son Warren filmed his whole journey because it was unlike any I had ever seen. It wasn’t until 2012 (5 years later), that my buddy Steve Yu posted the video to YouTube. This was the first time I learned what the term “viral video” meant. The video was soon on the front page of every major website at the time, MSN, AOL, Yahoo sports, Deadspin, GMA, and what really helped us go viral on Twitter was when we had someone tweet 'Stop what you’re doing right now and witness real magic.' It was David Copperfield.  It was the number one post on the Reddit homepage. All this put DDPY on the map." 

As a paratrooper in the Army, Arthur Boorman was no stranger to jumping out of planes. 

But he never fell harder than he did after he got home.  

Boorman was in his 40s when his body started breaking down. Years of wear and tear on his body from his 15-year career took its toll. 

“An injury knocked me out of the service, I had a large number of smaller injuries, I just kept getting busted up,” said Boorman, who lives in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, a stone’s throw away from Baltimore. “Due to the type of work I did, we had to carry an extremely large amount of gear and I was often the smallest person on the team.  

“It was heavy communication equipment, I was landing, I had to hop across the terrain. And as I did it, I kept getting worse and worse. Knees, hips, lower back, shoulder, my elbow. Nothing was that bad, but when you add it all together, it adds up on you.” 

To make matters worse, the special education teacher suffered an injury at work that really put him on the shelf. 

In reality, the problem wasn’t the injury. It was Boorman was in no condition to help himself get better. His weight had become a problem. 

He was 5 foot 6, over 300 pounds, had very little energy, he couldn’t move very well, and he was stuck in misery.  It wasn’t just sad. It was incredibly dangerous. 

“There were times just walking around would leave me exhausted,” Boorman said. “I once passed out in front of a group of students. After I got out (of the Army), I just fell apart. I would tell myself I’m working an honest job, getting a paycheck, not getting drunk, not doing drugs, not doing stupid stuff, not cheating on your wife, I’m doing OK.  

“So what if I can eat an entire pizza, a quart of ice cream and a bottle of soda? I’m doing fine. It’s a lie you tell yourself. I was committing suicide by food and that’s not who I am. The most important thing to me is my family. I wasn’t doing right by them even though I was lying to myself and saying I was good.”

Boorman was desperate to make a change. He didn’t know what to do, but he knew he had to do something. In 2006 he googled broken back and up popped DDP YOGA, which at the time didn’t even have that name. 

“I don’t know why I tried it, I was at a point where if I didn’t do something, I don’t want to sound dramatic, but I was going to die,” Boorman said.

DDP YOGA is the creation of Point Pleasant High School graduate and WWE HOF'er, Diamond Dallas Page. He created a hybrid yoga for regular guys. This hybrid of yoga caught Boorman’s eye.  

“I knew of DDP, I was at Fort Bragg and the wrestling promotion that Dallas was part of was very popular, so a lot of people watched wrestling,” Boorman said. “I’d see guys walking around in a DDP T-shirt, so I knew who he was. I saw him on TV, you’re on barracks duty, people are sitting around screaming because wrestling is on.  

“I was on the internet and looking around, just searching, you tweak the parameters, I was typing in different things, and I searched ‘Yoga broken back.’ I was looking through the results and saw it. I clicked it, figured it doesn’t cost to click. I thought ‘OK, I’m desperate as hell, I gave it a try and everything started happening.” 

After signing up, Page reached out to Boorman. 

It wasn’t a sales call. It was to check in on him, offer advice and help. It also came with a verbal diamond cutter that may have helped save Boorman’s life.

“What happened was I got an email and I thought it’s really good customer service,” Boorman said of the email that actually came from Page. “I said I got to be honest, I’m disabled, I can barely walk, I was a piece of furniture rather than a person. He sends me a phone number. He calls and we have a conversation and you know, Dallas is a really nice person, but at the same time, he knows when someone needs their ass kicked. That was me.  

“He gave me a therapeutic ass-kicking. ‘You’re killing yourself, your wife will be a widow, kids will be orphans. That’s not what someone says to cement a sale. He cared a lot more about me as a person that he just met on the phone than he did on the sale or what I would say to other people.  

“He cared more about me. And he sent me a whole bunch of stuff about what I should eat and how to change food. This is a lifeline. This is a chance. I don’t have one right now. Can you do it? Yes, I can do this. And I did.” 

Page made Boorman work.  

Boorman worked out to the DDP YOGA videos every day.  

It made him step outside his comfort zone. Though not physically, Page was there every step of the way as Boorman changed what he ate and worked himself into shape. 

He didn’t change Boorman’s life.  

He saved it. 

“It was really amazing, at the same time the voice says ‘this can’t last,’” Boorman said. “That’s why DDPY, you get out of it, what you put into it. There are no guarantees. But if you do it consistently, and you’re working it, it doesn’t mean every day has to be the perfect workout. You’ll do it, and feel like a million bucks. Some days you won’t. You just drug your butt through the workout. Get enough good days and be consistent. 

“Really, a month or so after I started pushing it hard, I realized that I was sleeping better, my pants were looser and things were getting better. I was moving better. After a while I could walk without a cane. I fell down a bunch of times, but that’s OK.”

What Boorman did next was the best thing he could have done in Page’s eyes. Page saw someone online helping others through using DDP YOGA. Page wasn’t worried about losing business, he was happy to see one of “his guys” paying it forward.

Boorman made a video with his son Warren & Page of his weight loss and how DDPY saved his life. Eventually, he became a star.

“It went viral and put us on the map,” Page said of Boorman’s video. "It was all over CNN and MSN, shared hundreds of thousands of times. That video has over a billion views across all platforms. 

“Arthur never stopped. Two new knees, one new hip, and he just never stopped working.

“He was using DDPY to help others. That’s the biggest thing. We have our DDPYOGA Facebook group where members actually help each other. There’s no need to do it alone. The entire community works together. Arthur thought I would be mad when I saw him teaching others. Brother, you’re helping!”

Boorman continues to work hard at maintaining his weight.

He has his ups and downs like everyone. He credits his wife Vicki and sons Warren, Eric and John for being his inspiration to get better. His family is his life, and they were the reason he worked so hard. But he credits Page with being the catalyst.

“Trust me, I’ve tried a lot of things, I’m not special at all, I’m a special education teacher who wanted to live,” Boorman said. “I’m not special. DDPY is. The program put me on the path, and supported me.

“I don’t want to sound dramatic, but he’s the reason I’m alive. Honest truth, I wouldn’t be alive right now if not for Page Joseph Falkinburg, aka DDP. That’s the truth. It’s bizarre, it’s amazing, here I am, a busted-up former paratrooper, special ed teacher, and a TV wrestler pops into my life. It sounds like a bad sitcom, but it’s the truth. 

“It’s weird, but it saved my life.” 

That's not how Page sees it.

"I inspired one guy," Page said. "He inspired hundreds of millions."
