BTA Promote Franks, Thompson & Beveridge

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] announced the promotion of three staff members – Jakai Franks, Tashae Thompson, and Duncan Beveridge – within its Experience, Operations and Finance teams.

A spokesperson said, “Tashae Thompson has been promoted to VP of Experience. In this role, she will be responsible for leading the organization’s efforts to increase visitor spending and overall satisfaction, while also developing and executing experiences that align with the National Tourism Plan.

“With over 15 years of experience in the tourism industry, Thompson understands the innovation required to close the gaps in visitor experiences year-round. She has had a hand in elevating Bermuda’s historical and cultural assets integrating them into new visitor experiences.

“For Bermuda Restaurant Weeks, a staple on the BTA calendar, Ms. Thompson repurposed existing cultural sites to create memorable experiences connecting visitors and residents. Likewise, she led the development and execution of the inaugural St. George’s Seafood and Swizzle Festivals this year to connect Bermuda’s visitors with local, authentic experiences while creating business opportunities for tourism entrepreneurs, and attractions.”

Ms Thompson stated, “I have always believed in either finding a way or making one. I know I am on a purposeful path and look forward to continuing to be of service to my country.”

Jakai Franks, VP of Operations; Tashae Thompson, VP of Experiences; Duncan Beveridge, VP of Finance.

Bermuda Tourism Authority VP Promotion October 2022

The spokesperson said, “Joining Tashae Thompson is Jakai Franks who now has the title of VP of Operations. Franks was appointed as the Operations Manager of the Bermuda Visitor Services Centres in December 2018.

“Since then, he has worked on numerous projects that have positively impacted Bermuda tourism, such as: launching the ‘Purchase for a Purpose’ campaign to help restaurant workers who were affected by the pandemic. Additionally, Franks had a hand in creating and launching an e-commerce platform for the visitor centres. In his new role, he will oversee all the operations and admin of the BTA, including HR and IT.”

Mr Franks said, “I’m delighted to be chosen as the VP of Operations for the BTA. I plan to bring innovation, and my years of managerial experience to the Authority to help our employees and stakeholders better position Bermuda as the pristine destination we know it to be.”

The spokesperson said, “Included in the series of BTA executive promotions is Duncan Beveridge. Joining the organisation in 2014 as Finance Director, Duncan will now serve as VP of Finance. Coming to the organisation with over two decades of finance experience within the hospitality industry, he is no stranger to the world of tourism. Throughout his eight-year tenure at the BTA, Duncan has dealt with all financial matters while maintaining the organisation’s fiscal integrity and ensuring adherence to statutory compliance requirements.”

“Working for the BTA over the course of eight years has been rewarding, and a career highlight. I proudly accept this new post of VP of Finance with pride and look forward to continuing to assist the authority as we blaze forward,” said Mr Beveridge.

“Organisationally, we continue to look for ways to optimize our teams and processes to align with the landscape of our evolving industry,” said Tracy Berkeley, Interim CEO of the BTA. Berkeley continued, “I am extremely proud of Tashae, Jakai, and Duncan and look forward to working alongside them as we continue to move Bermuda forward.”

Questions: 1. Are these newly created positions? 2. If not new positions, what happened to the previous VPs? 3. How many people, if any, does each VP supervise? 4. What are the quantifiable and verifiable performance metrics for each VP?

BTA aims to fill CEO job internally

bermuda tourism authority staff

The Bermuda Tourism Authority will try to fill its vacant top position internally rather than conduct another global search for a new chief executive, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

The publicly funded quango announced in June that Charles Jeffers III, a Bermudian who had been CEO for little more than a year, had departed and that plans were “in motion for a permanent replacement”.

Mr Jeffers was appointed in 2021 after an international search described by the BTA as “open, transparent and rigorous” — but the authority has opted for a markedly different approach to replace him.

It made chief administration officer Tracy Berkeley the interim CEO and has not advertised the six-figure salary position.

The BTA told The Royal Gazette on Friday, in response to questions about the recruitment process, that it would “seek to fill the role of CEO from within the organisation first”.

A spokesman said: “If we do not find a candidate from within, the BTA will welcome external candidates to apply for the role via local advertising and international headhunting.

“Until then, Tracy Berkeley will remain interim CEO.”

The last CEO search took place in 2021 after the departure of Kevin Dallas.

The BTA said then that it needed to look globally for a candidate because the “extraordinary times demand that we acquire the precise talent needed at all levels of the organisation“.

It said the search would provide the opportunity for the BTA to determine “what expertise is available and how we best position the organisation to discharge its critical mission on behalf of Bermuda”.

Applicants in 2021 received a six-page job specification, with a long list of requirements for the post, including “minimum ten years’ experience as a senior executive with responsibility for leading high-performing marketing, sales and investment teams and delivering results” and “proven ability to lead an organisation”.

The BTA and Mr Jeffers have been tight-lipped on the reason he exited the high-profile job after such a short time, with neither commenting on whether he quit or was let go.

He was previously chief operating officer at Visit Baltimore Inc and moved back to Bermuda to take on the CEO role after decades working overseas.

Ms Berkeley has been described by the BTA as a “highly motivated, agile and focused C-suite professional, with 20-plus years of diverse, global, strategic human resources and operational experience in the (re) insurance, tourism, healthcare and international business sectors”.

She came to the BTA in January 2020 as its “director of people”, or head of human resources, having previously been head of talent and culture at Rosewood Bermuda, in charge of the Bermuda HR division at Aspen Re, and head of the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s human resources and operations team.

A year later she was promoted to chief administration officer, taking on responsibility, according to a BTA press release, for “directing best practice in both HR management and operational efficiencies” at the authority’s Bermuda and New York offices.

The CAO role now appears to have been eliminated, with no one covering the position while Ms Berkeley acts as interim CEO.

Instead, Erin Smith, who was the BTA’s chief information officer, was promoted to the permanent position of chief operations officer, leading observers to wonder if the board has already earmarked Ms Berkeley as permanent CEO.

One source, who asked not to be named, said: “You are not going to have a COO and a CAO. There is really no place for her [Ms Berkeley] to go back to.

“She had essentially the same responsibilities as the COO, aside from finance.”

The source said they believed Ms Berkeley would soon be announced as permanent CEO, despite a background in human resources rather than senior leadership in marketing.

The post, according to data released in 2016, comes with an annual salary of between $290,000 and $300,000 and a bonus between $85,000 and $90,000.

Ms Berkeley was appointed to the board of Polaris, parent company of dock operator Stevedoring Services in March 2021 . She was also appointed to the Defence Board by the Governor.

Ms Berkeley also sits on the Promotions Board of the Royal Bermuda Regiment and on the board of the Bermuda Visitor Service Centres.

Last month, the BTA moved to correct reports in several international news outlets that Ms Berkeley had been appointed permanent CEO.

She hit the headlines here again soon after when she told a radio show that she enjoyed a recent visit to another island because “everywhere I went, the people that were dealing with me — first of all they looked like me — but they were all from there and so they were able to give me insight and nuance to the island in a way that we don’t always offer our own visitors because not everybody in our industry is from here”.

Has the vacant CEO post been advertised?

If so, can you provide details, particularly the requirements/criteria for the role?

Has a headhunter been engaged to find a new CEO?

If so, can you provide details?

Has the BTA identified any possible candidates yet?

If so, how many and at what stage is the recruitment process at?

Has the position of chief administration officer been removed from the BTA C-suite or is the expectation that Tracy Berkeley will return to that role if she is not appointed the permanent CEO?

If the position of CAO is still in effect, is anyone acting in that position on an interim basis at the moment, or do the responsibilities of that role now fall to Erin Smith, as chief operations officer?

Why is the board of the BTA doing the CEO recruitment so differently this time?

Why does it no longer feel it needs to look around the world for suitable candidates?

A BTA spokesman’s response: “The Bermuda Tourism Authority will seek to fill the role of CEO from within the organisation first. If we do not find a candidate from within, the BTA will welcome external candidates to apply for the role via local advertising and international headhunting. Until then, Tracy Berkeley will remain interim CEO.”

New Bermuda Tourism CEO to Lead Island’s Recovery Push

The Bermuda Tourism Authority has a new chief executive officer: Tracy Berkeley, who has been serving as the organization’s Interim CEO since June of last year.

Berkeley, who has been with the Bermuda Tourism Authority since January 2020, will be tasked with leading the island’s tourism recovery after several challenging years since the onset of the pandemic.

She succeeded former BTA CEO Charles Jeffers last year as interim CEO.

“We are starting to see incremental growth along with a reinvigorated local community. Our success can be attributed in part to a focused, data-led strategic recovery plan and our commitment to seeing it through,” Berkeley said in a statement. “By championing Bermuda’s core strengths and engaging with media and trade partners around the world, we have been able to leverage the island’s key selling characteristics and reinforce the message that we are open business.  I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to further develop this vital sector of the island’s economy.”

While the island’s tourism sector has not bounced back as well as other islands in the Atlantic-Caribbean region, its tourism numbers are climbing .

That comes after Bermuda was seeing record-breaking tourism numbers for several years before the pandemic, a resurgence the largely began with the holding of the America’s Cup sailing competition on the island back in 2017.

“We are excited to announce Tracy Berkeley to the position of CEO and are confident that the organization — and Bermuda as a whole — will benefit greatly from her leadership and expertise,” said Wayne Caines, Chairman of the BTA Board. “As Interim CEO, she answered the call to take on the challenge and delivered against a clear set of mandates, determined by the board, impeccably. I am confident that she will continue to do so with our support and the support of the island’s valuable community.”

Discover Bermuda Through The Eyes of Its Locals

The beauty and allure of Bermuda is more than its renowned pink sand beaches. It’s in the Bermudian way. Where to go. How to be. What to do — from saying hello to everyone to taste testing for the best swizzle.

White limestone rooftops, pastel-hued estates, lavishly green palm trees and two-way winding roads are the constants reminding visitors that they’ve reached the famed shores of Bermuda. But you can’t sum up the archipelago’s 21 miles of intimate island life simply by looking at the topography or architecture. You have to let go and truly get lost in the island’s charm, a seamless intermingling of lush beautiful landscapes, palpable history and thriving traditions. And who better to tell you why you should ride a scooter versus drive a car, the best places to get fish chowder or where you should try crushing shells under your toes on a blush-hued beach than those who enjoy the island’s ocean spray daily?

Ready to lose yourself in paradise? Let these locals, true Bermudians, be your guides.

The historic site served as the island’s naval center, most notably repairing British ships from the 1800s through both world wars. More recently, the station was used to train Bermudians in the trades, then transformed into a commerce hub where guests gather to dine, shop and socialize.

“This area is a testament to Bermuda's maritime legacy. The well-preserved structures showcase a captivating blend of history and architectural prowess. I love how visitors can immerse themselves in the stories of the past while enjoying stunning waterfront views,” O’Connor said.

Constructed in 1614, the structure is Bermuda’s largest fort and a popular historic site featuring tunnels and towers. Today, the site is a highly sought-after destination for history buffs and adventure seekers, where they can explore the grounds, take-in exhibits and relax at the beachside.

“This space plays homage to our ancestry and the cannon and cave theme are splashed across the island. When visiting, one can feel the presence of the militia framed with the beauty of the island blue,” France said.

The popular eatery’s name pays tribute to  the island’s moniker and serves a variety of treasured Bermudian dishes.

“I eat there on Saturdays. It has a brunchy vibe and welcomes me to pair naughty and nice — think crispy pork belly and fresh pressed juices. The true brilliance is that a large selection of their sauces and breads are made in-house, which translates with distinction on the palate. And Devil’s Isle coffee is definitely an island staple; people gift it to friends and family,” France said.

“My favorite store is Qui-Ja's. This store generates some of Bermuda's most pristine works of art, including Gombey capes, majorette uniforms, satin gowns. The rich culture of the Bermudian seamstress is preserved here. I lose myself in the walls of this store,” France said.

The waterfront restaurant on Mangrove Bay is led by the chef James Wambui and is known for its distinctly Bermudian fare and atmosphere.

“The ambience at Sunken Harbor is nautical, vintage and cozy. The steps leading to the entrance are reminiscent of Bermuda’s limestone caves and the furnishings are an ode to vintage Bermudian homes, with hues of burgundy and ceiling fans that mimic our ocean life. The dishes are created to meld sea and land. Try the tandoori scallops. It requires little-to-no chewing, and has mussels and squash blossoms plated to mimic a slab of coral. It is truly Bermuda on a plate,” France said.
