The Rhine River is the setting for one of Europe’s most popular river cruise itineraries. Typically sailing the length of the river between Amsterdam and Basel, these enchanting Rhine River cruises visit the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland. This memorable journey of discovery is a rich cocktail of delights perfectly suited for those who love spectacular scenery, history, culture, wine, and outstanding cuisine.

Cruises along the legendary Rhine are filled with centuries-old castles, Gothic cathedrals, terraced vineyards, storybook villages, meandering canals, and culinary delights. There’s so much to see and do along this route, as I was able to experience recently with AmaWaterways . The award-winning, family owned and operated cruise line is celebrating its 20th anniversary and offers highly immersive river cruises on many of the world’s most scenic waterways, including the Rhine.

AmaWaterways’ newest ship

AmaWaterways invited me to be their guest to sail their 7-night Captivating Rhine itinerary from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, on their newest ship, AmaLucia . This floating luxury boutique hotel is filled with amenities, including a panoramic lounge, an expansive sun deck with a pool and walking track, complimentary bicycles, and daily wellness activities. All accommodations are spacious outside staterooms, and the majority have AmaWaterways’ signature twin balconies. AmaLucia also offers multiple connecting cabins as well as triple and quad accommodations, which are ideal for families and multigenerational groups.

Our sailing offered a wealth of opportunities to be immersed in the history, culture, and landscapes of Europe. All 21 enriching excursions offered on our AmaLucia voyage were included in the cruise fare, and two to four tours were available in each port of call. This luxury of choice is particularly appealing for those traveling with family members or a group of people who may have different interests and activity levels. Guests can explore at their own speed, with most walking tours available at gentle, regular, and active paces. Guided hiking and biking excursions are also featured. The tour options were excellent, and I often wished I could clone myself so I could experience multiple tours offered simultaneously.

My AmaWaterways Rhine River cruise was filled with so many fabulous moments that it’s hard to pick favorites. Here are 11 of my most memorable experiences:

Historic castles line the river in Germany

1. Marveling At Castles Along The Rhine

Sailing through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, a roughly 40-mile stretch between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, was an unforgettable highlight of my Rhine river cruise. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with historic castles , palaces, fortresses, and legends.

Standing on AmaLucia ’s sun deck, I was mesmerized by the awe-inspiring scenery complete with picturesque towns, hillside vineyards, and 30 stunning castles and fortresses lining the river. Our knowledgeable cruise manager provided expert commentary on the Upper Middle Rhine Valley’s castles, the area’s stories and legends, the massive Loreley Rock, and the iconic statue that bears the siren’s name. The crew made the experience even more memorable by serving Rüdesheimer coffee (more on this adult beverage later) and an elaborate barbeque lunch on the sun deck.

Pro Tip: Get AmaWaterways’ Castle Cruiser map and plan to be up on the top deck early before your ship starts sailing past the first castle. Double-check the exact timing with your cruise manager so you won’t miss a moment of this experience.

2. Savoring Exceptional Cuisine

AmaWaterways is known for delivering memorable dining experiences , and it is a member of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, one of the world’s most prestigious invitation-only culinary organizations.

I was impressed with the consistently high quality of our meals and the personalized, attentive service on the AmaLucia . AmaLucia’s dining areas include the Main Restaurant, the panoramic Al Fresco Terrace, and the elegant Chef’s Table complimentary dining venue. The Chef’s Table is a reservation-only gourmet culinary experience featuring an exquisite multi-course tasting menu paired with complimentary wines. The Main Restaurant serves three mouthwatering meals daily, with menus featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and regional cuisine, including exceptional meats and seafood. Wines, beer, and soft drinks are complimentary with meals, and a tapas menu is available in the lounge.

The AmaLucia staff did an excellent job dealing with food allergies, and they surprised their guests with unannounced treats like gelato parties and other delights during our cruise.

Pro Tips: Make reservations for The Chef’s Table at the reception desk on embarkation day.

3. Strolling And Shopping In Strasbourg

I fell in love with this “Gem of the Alsace,” a historic city that blends both French and German cultures. Strasbourg’s Grande-Île, an urban island created by a tributary of the Rhine and a canal, is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with cobblestone streets, enticing shops, and sidewalk cafes.

I enjoyed visiting centuries-old Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral, with its magnificent astronomical clock; sampling Alsatian cuisine; and strolling through the enchanting Petite France district, with its quaint half-timbered buildings and flower-bedecked bridges. Shopping at boutiques along the Rue du Dôme, the Rue des Juifs, and in Petite France was a treat.

Pro Tip: If you’re planning to go shopping, take your passport with you for possible value-added-tax refunds if you might make large purchases in one or two stores. A photo of your passport often works.

AmaLucia’s sun deck

4. Watching The World Go By

Some of the best moments of my AmaWaterways river cruise were spent on our ship, simply relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. It’s rare to have this kind of pleasurable downtime, and our floating luxury hotel provided front-row seats for the Rhine’s spectacular show.

My AmaLucia stateroom featured AmaWaterways’ signature twin balconies, providing beautiful views from both the French balcony and a full-size veranda equipped with comfortable chairs.

AmaLucia ’s sun deck is another great place to watch the Rhine’s ever-changing landscapes. The sun deck offers loungers in both sun and shade, and a large seating area at the bow is equipped with comfortable couches, tables, and chairs perfect for taking in the panoramic scenic views.

Pro Tip: Have breakfast or lunch at the Al Fresco Terrace at least once during your cruise. The views are amazing, and it’s a choice spot to watch your ship pass through the Rhine River locks.

Strolling down Drosselgasse during the evening in Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany

5. Enjoying Rüdesheim After Dark

Rüdesheim am Rhein is one of Germany’s most picturesque wine areas. Guests can soar above the vineyards on a gondola ride to the hilltop Niederwald Monument, join a wine tasting, visit the unique Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet museum, and take a guided biking or hiking tour.

I enjoyed sampling local wines and viewing the terraced vineyards, but one of my favorite experiences was exploring Rüdesheim after dark. This quaint town comes alive at night. We strolled around the Old Town and down Drosselgasse, a narrow cobblestone street lined with restaurants, wine bars, taverns, and boutiques. Our group listened to live music and visited the Rüdesheimer Schloss for authentic Rüdesheimer coffee , a potent beverage made with local Asbach brandy and sugar and topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. It was an enchanting evening.

Pro Tip: AmaWaterways provides free tourist train rides for easy access to Rüdesheim’s Old Town area. Wear sturdy shoes, since the cobblestone streets can be hilly and uneven.

River cruise guests

6. Interacting With Our Fantastic On-Board Community

AmaLucia offers an environment of casual luxury, along with an incredibly welcoming staff. It was fantastic to spend time relaxing on board and enjoying the ship’s amenities, exceptional cuisine, personalized service, and vibrant onboard community.

The AmaWaterways team created fantastic camaraderie on our cruise, encouraging close interaction with staff members and other guests. Guests come together to share stories at mealtimes and get to know each other better on shore excursions. We had fun with new friends in the evenings, enjoying the entertainment and dancing the night away in the Main Lounge and at parties on the sun deck.

Pro Tip: Plan to be at the ship’s daily Sip & Sail happy hour in the Main Lounge. It’s a great place to meet and mingle with other guests, and complimentary wine, beer, and spirits are served.

The ruins of Heidelberg Castle

7. Exploring Historic Heidelberg

Our included tour of beautiful Heidelberg was a fabulous experience. This well-preserved city is set along the scenic Neckar River and is home to Germany’s oldest and most renowned university. We started by taking a guided visit through the ancient ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a royal Renaissance palace built with stunning red sandstone. The world-famous fortress towers above the Neckar Valley and its cellars contain the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s largest wine barrel. After touring the castle, we had plenty of time on our own to explore the Old City with its countless shops and boutiques, stroll along the waterfront, and relax at an outdoor café while sampling German beers.

Pro Tip: Walk across Heidelberg’s Old Bridge to enjoy dazzling views of iconic Heidelberg Castle, the Old City, and the Neckar River.

AmaWaterways Rhine River bike excursion

8. Amping Up Wellness And Staying Active

Most AmaWaterways river cruise ships have a professionally trained Wellness Host on board who leads complimentary yoga, Zumba, and other fitness activities throughout the journey. Active shore excursions, including guided bike tours and hikes, are also offered in ports of call. Guests who prefer riding in their spare time rather than taking a biking excursion can use AmaLucia ’s complimentary bicycles.

I loved AmaLucia ’s activities and yoga classes and discovered flexibility I didn’t know I lacked. As a result of the superb wellness programs on AmaLucia , my husband and I have taken up yoga at home.

Pro Tip: AmaWaterways also offers very reasonably-priced massage services on their ships, and guests raved about their treatments. Make your appointments at the reception desk on embarkation day.

Amsterdam canal

9. Cruising Along Amsterdam’s Canals

Amsterdam is home to 165 canals, and a scenic canal cruise along these tree-lined waterways is a fantastic way to see the city’s centuries-old historical center and beautiful attractions. There’s so much to see and do in Amsterdam, so plan to spend several days here before or after your cruise. During our extended time in Amsterdam, we took a fabulous canal tour and visited the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Floriade Expo, a world-renowned horticultural exhibition occurring once each decade.

Pro Tip: AmaWaterways offers immersive, fully-escorted land packages in Amsterdam and Switzerland on their Rhine voyages. Guests highly recommended these convenient river cruise extensions.

Riquewihr

10. Discovering Enchanting Riquewihr

Surrounded by lush vineyards, idyllic Riquewihr is one of the most beautiful towns in France. Straight out of a fairytale, Riquewihr is a medieval French village said to have inspired animators creating Belle’s hometown in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast . This storybook village is filled with postcard-perfect half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, charming shops and cafés, and structures dating back to the 13 th century. Riquewihr is known for producing outstanding wines, such as its exceptional riesling. We enjoyed relaxing at a delightful outdoor café and sampling local treats here.

Pro Tip: Riquewihr’s cobblestone streets can be uneven, and there’s a tourist train available if preferred. Make sure to try Les Macarons de Riquewihr at Maison Alsacienne De Biscuiterie . They’re delicious!

AmaLucia’s outdoor pool

11. Chilling Out In The Pool

When choosing your river cruise ship, consider the amenities that would make your vacation more pleasurable. Europe’s summers are often hot, so spending time in the pool is appealing. AmaLucia ’s sun deck features a lovely outdoor pool , and I was thrilled to kick back and cool down there during our cruise in July. Aqua aerobics are also offered here. The ship’s pool is heated, so it can still be wonderful to enjoy in the spring and fall.

Pro Tip: Head up to the pool in the evening. It was a fantastic place to relax while watching the sunset, then sit at the swim-up bar while stargazing later at night.

AmaWaterways vs. Viking: Which of these popular river cruise lines is right for you?

Donna Heiderstadt

Among the cruise lines navigating the rivers of Europe, Southeast Asia and Egypt are two of the best-known names in the industry: AmaWaterways and Viking .

Each brand is distinguished by its hallmark attractions, such as AmaWaterways' selection of always-complimentary excursions and Viking's consistently sleek Scandinavian-inspired interior design. But is there really that much difference between these major river cruise brands that it matters which one you choose?

The answer is yes. Some of the variations may even surprise you, so read on for a head-to-head comparison of AmaWaterways versus Viking.

AmaWaterways vs. Viking: Meet the river cruise lines

best ama river cruises

River cruise lines AmaWaterways and Viking launched within five years of each other. Both are helmed by well-known cruise and travel industry executives and feature fleets of modern river ships. Yet each takes its own unique approach to itineraries, tours and onboard ambience.

AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by Vienna-born Rudi Schreiner, Germany native Kristin Karst and the late Jimmy Murphy, who was Irish. The line has a fleet of 26 ships, with three new vessels launching in 2024 and 2025.

The brand's hallmark is offering multiple excursions, typically three or four per port, included in the cruise fare. These are usually a city walking tour, perhaps with a wine or culinary focus, or a bus tour to nearby sights. One "Gentle" group is dedicated to guests who need a little extra time getting around, and each port almost always includes a more challenging hike or bike ride for fitness-focused guests. AmaWaterways ships also carry bicycles on board, which are available for independent exploration.

The company is known for custom-designed ships with destination-inspired contemporary decor. Its public spaces feel like those you'd find in a locally owned boutique hotel. A key design innovation by AmaWaterways was the introduction of the "twin balcony," which consists of a French balcony and a full-size step-out balcony. This adds exceptional views and a sense of spaciousness to the cabins that feature them.

The Viking story started a few years before AmaWaterways. Launched in 1997 by Norwegian-born cruise veteran Torstein Hagen and several partners, Viking River Cruises was designed to be destination-focused and culturally immersive. Viking currently has 69 river ships, with two more scheduled to launch in 2024 and 2025.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking cruise ship

Viking's river cruise fares include one complimentary shore excursion in each port, typically a panoramic bus tour or guided walking tour. Guests may also choose from among a range of other extra-fee tour options, most with a cultural or culinary bent but some a bit more active.

The company grew its river cruise business by attracting mature travelers seeking a convenient way to explore multiple cities and countries in Europe. However, its brand recognition and growth greatly accelerated with the introduction of its first Viking Longship in 2012 and a successful marketing campaign around the launch of the Longships (including sponsorship of "Downton Abbey" on PBS Masterpiece).

Today, Viking's 55 virtually identical Longships, named for Nordic gods and goddesses (from Viking Agir to Viking Vili), represent a certain standard of European river cruising, and all feature light and airy Scandinavian design.

Unlike AmaWaterways, which remains strictly a river cruise company, Viking has expanded into ocean cruising. In 2015, the company introduced the 930-passenger Viking Star and now operates a fleet of nine identical ocean ships. In 2022, it added a pair of 378-guest, Polar-6-Class expedition ships. That means Viking fans can vacation around the world without leaving the brand.

best ama river cruises

The ships in AmaWaterways and Viking's river cruise fleets range from intimate (28 guests) to grand (386 guests), with the size differences most notable on rivers such as the Nile, Mekong and Mississippi.

AmaWaterways' 29 ships aren't entirely uniform, even the 20 in its popular European fleet. Those ships are either 360 or 443 feet in length and carry 140 to 196 passengers and 45 to 70 crew members, respectively. The majority (15 ships) carry between 152 and 162 passengers and 51 crew, while four smaller vessels accommodate either 140 or 144 passengers and 45 crew.

The outlier is 196-guest AmaMagna, which is the line's flagship vessel on the Danube. At 443 feet long and 72 feet wide, it is almost double the width of the average river ship without significantly increasing the passenger count. This has created an abundance of space that AmaWaterways has used to enhance the cruise experience. Cabins and suites are larger than on its other ships at 205 to 710 square feet versus 160 to 350 square feet. AmaMagna also offers passengers a choice of four dining venues rather than two, as well as five onboard bars, unique for a river ship.

On Portugal's Douro River, AmaWaterways has two ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida. Each accommodates 102 passengers and 38 crew. A third vessel, AmaSintra, will launch in early 2025.

In Egypt, AmaWaterways currently operates AmaDahlia, which carries 72 passengers and 62 crew. When a second ship, AmaLilia, launches in 2024, it will accommodate 82 passengers and 65 crew.

On the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, AmaDara is the cruise line's sole vessel. This ship, featuring French colonial decor and beautifully carved wood furniture, accommodates 124 passengers and 52 crew.

AmaWaterways also operates one vessel on the Chobe River in Botswana, and like AmaMagna , it's an outlier — but for the opposite reason. At just 150 feet in length, Zambezi Queen was designed in 2019 specifically for wildlife viewing and accommodates just 28 passengers and 22 crew.

In 2024, AmaWaterways will add South America to its portfolio when it begins cruising the Magdalena River in Colombia. AmaMagdalena will carry 60 passengers and 30 crew.

Related: Best river cruise lines around the world

As for Viking, the company's fleet of 55 identical Longships is ubiquitous along Central Europe's major rivers. At 443 feet in length, each accommodates 190 passengers and 53 crew members.

On Portugal's Douro River, Viking operates four smaller ships. They carry 106 passengers and 33 crew members. On the Elbe River in Germany, the cruise line has two ships, Viking Astrild and Viking Beyla, each carrying 98 passengers and 33 crew.

On the Seine River in France, Viking's four identical ships, all built in 2020, accommodate 168 passengers and 46 crew.

Viking's fleet on the Nile River in Egypt currently numbers four ships, with two more in the pipeline. The two newest — Viking Osiris and Viking Aton — were launched in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Each accommodates 82 passengers and 48 crew members. The similarly sized Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek are set to join them in 2024 and 2025. Two smaller ships, Viking Ra (2017) and MS Antares (2007), carry just 52 and 62 passengers, respectively, with crew staffs of 55 and 75.

In Asia, Viking operates just one ship. Viking Saigon, which debuted in 2022 and accommodates 80 passengers.

Viking's largest river ship is actually cruising stateside. Viking Mississippi, which debuted in 2022 and is 450 feet in length, accommodates 386 guests and 147 crew.

If you do the math, you'll see that while both AmaWaterways and Viking's main European river ships are 443 feet in length, Viking's ships carry 30 additional guests. That means Viking ships will be a tad more crowded and cabins slightly smaller (135 to 205 square feet versus 160 to 235 square feet) to accommodate. (However, suites on Viking vessels are generally a bit roomier.)

AmaWaterways also has a slightly better crew-to-guest ratio on its core European river fleet: 51 crew members for 156-162 guests versus Viking's 53 crew members for 190 guests. Both cruise lines offer excellent service, however, and any discrepancy will most likely be felt when a Viking ship is sailing at capacity, and the ship's sole dining room is full at mealtimes.

Who is on board AmaWaterways and Viking?

best ama river cruises

Several factors play a role in the passenger mix aboard these competing river cruise lines. For one, Viking's ships are adults only (passengers must be at least 18), while AmaWaterways welcomes multigenerational families. That's not to say that you'll find kids running amok on the latter's ships, but you might share your river cruise with parents and teens or grandparents and younger children during summer and spring break.

The most obvious difference to the casual observer, however, will be the age and fitness level of each line's core clientele.

Viking is highly popular with Americans — especially older Americans age 65 and above who like the cruise line's consistency and emphasis on easy sightseeing by bus. More active passengers might find themselves frustrated by the pace of guided walking tours, but they can always book excursions coded as "moderate" or "demanding" rather than "easy" to lessen the odds of being slowed by fellow passengers who aren't as speedy.

AmaWaterways is also popular with U.S. travelers but attracts a slightly more international demographic that's also perhaps a bit younger — and fitter. Why? Not only does the cruise line offer active hiking or biking excursions in most ports, but its ships also have a Wellness Host on board leading morning and afternoon yoga, meditation and fitness classes. Guests who book AmaMagna can even play pickleball on a full-size court.

AmaWaterways also partners with bike touring company Backroads to host groups of cyclists on board, typically 30 to 40 at a time, for lengthier and more challenging bike rides than on its normal itineraries.

Wine lovers are another core group for AmaWaterways, which in 2024 will host more than 70 wine-themed cruises highlighting different wineries (mostly U.S.-based but also some European wineries on Rhone itineraries) that have been invited to bring their wine club members on board for tastings, lectures and special excursions. Some groups buy out the entire ship, but the average is 70 to 80 passengers, or about half the ship's capacity. That means you could be sailing with a large group that's keenly focused on wine.

Cabins and suites

best ama river cruises

Because 19 of AmaWaterways' core European ships fall into two size categories, accommodating 144 to 162 passengers, cabin and suite design is consistent across most of the fleet. Each of the generously sized rooms features a flat-screen TV and a bathroom with a roomy shower.

Fixed window cabins on the lowest deck are 160 square feet, French balcony cabins are 155 to 170 square feet, twin balcony cabins (with both a French balcony and step-out veranda) are 210 to 235 square feet, and suites are 300 to 350 square feet. The company's two Douro River ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida, feature similarly sized cabins and suites.

While the general theme uniting the accommodations across AmaWaterways' European fleet is contemporary design with destination-inspired touches, suite decor is unique from ship to ship. In general, cabin decor has become lighter and brighter with each new (or newly refurbished) ship, with interesting textures and patterns replacing more traditional fabrics.

In 2017, AmaWaterways also launched the first river ship (AmaKristina) with connecting rooms, designed for multigenerational families or groups of friends traveling together. Six additional ships (AmaLea, AmaMagna, AmaMora, AmaLucia, AmaSiena and AmaDahlia) now also have this feature.

Related: Best river cruises in Europe

Viking Longships are each a carbon copy of the others, so passengers know exactly what they are getting when they book. Cabins are more compact than those on AmaWaterways' ships but have an airy ambience featuring light woods, neutral fabrics and a well-designed bathroom with a heated floor.

Standard cabins are 150 square feet and have a small window just above the water line. French Balcony cabins are a snug 135 square feet, but feature wall-to-wall sliding glass doors. Veranda cabins are 205 square feet, while veranda suites are 275 square feet. The two Explorer Suites are 445 square feet, including a 270-degree wrap-around veranda.

For slightly larger accommodations, river cruisers should look to AmaMagna, as its double-width design allows for roomier accommodations. Its two top balcony categories offer a generous 474 and 710 square feet of space, similar to the square footage of suites on many ocean ships.

Dining options on AmaWaterways vs. Viking

best ama river cruises

There's no question that you will eat well on a river cruise. Both AmaWaterways and Viking have culinary programs designed to appeal to a wide variety of food preferences, including vegetarian. You can expect to enjoy classic preparations as well as destination-focused dining highlighting regional cuisines.

AmaWaterways, which is the only river cruise line that's a member of the prestigious culinary organization La Chaine des Rotisseurs, offers a la carte dining from menus that change daily for both lunch and dinner, as well as full-service breakfast from menus rather than a buffet. Options range from eggs Benedict or omelets to smoked trout or avocado toast.

Guests who prefer a lighter, more informal breakfast or lunch can skip the Main Restaurant and opt to enjoy a small selection of options served in a central buffet in the Lounge.

Sit-down lunch menus in the Main Restaurant feature a selection of appetizers served family-style and main course options that include at least one local preparation, such as goulash in Budapest or wiener schnitzel in Vienna. Dinner menus are more extensive and include three or four appetizers/soups and three or four mains (with well-conceived meat or fish options and delicious vegetarian dishes). There are two hard-to-resist dessert choices, along with seasonal fruits and a selection of cheeses.

All AmaWaterways ships also feature the Chef's Table, an intimate space (it seats 28) located at the back of the ship and offering panoramic views. Passengers can reserve a shared table here to enjoy a beautifully prepared multicourse meal at no additional cost.

In addition, AmaMagna offers two more restaurant options: Jimmy's for casual, family-style dining and Al Fresco for vegetable-forward menu options served in an outdoor setting.

AmaWaterways serves an excellent selection of complimentary wines (most from local vineyards along your river cruise route) and beers with both lunch and dinner, as well as a selection of complimentary mixed drinks, wines and beers during the nightly predinner Sip & Sail cocktail hour. Sparkling wine is also available during breakfast.

Viking's dining experience is also designed to offer plenty of options. At breakfast and lunch in the Main Restaurant, passengers can select items from the buffet — which typically includes freshly made pastries, cheeses, smoked salmon, oatmeal, fruit and eggs — and/or order off of the day's menu (buttermilk pancakes, eggs Benedict and more).

Lunch is similar, with buffet selections available as well as a menu with daily selections (soup, salad and two main options) plus always-available dishes (such as salad Nicoise and burgers). The lunch menu does not always have a locally inspired dish, but Viking guests can enjoy their midday meal while surveying local surroundings by opting to dine alfresco on the Aquavit Terrace. This aft space is popular on days when the weather is good and offers much of the same menu as the Main Restaurant.

It's at dinner that Viking's chefs inject more local flavors into the menu, with a suggested three-course Regional Specialties Tasting Menu (chicken paprikash as the main in Hungary, for instance). These offerings are complemented by a daily selection of two starters, two mains (always with a vegetarian selection) and one dessert. In addition, guests can choose from a Classics menu with always-available favorites.

Viking also serves unlimited complimentary wine and beer with both lunch and dinner, but the selection is a bit limited. Passengers wanting more options can purchase a Silver Spirits drinks package to enjoy a wider choice, including the sommelier's selection of wines, which are often excellent local varietals. The package also includes cocktails and other beverages, which can be enjoyed at any time.

Viking does not host a complimentary evening cocktail hour, but on certain days it does offer free wine tastings on the Aquavit Terrace.

What's on board

best ama river cruises

Most of the real estate aboard river cruise ships is taken up by guest accommodations, the main restaurant and the lounge, leaving little room for any fancy attractions beyond a small gift shop.

But AmaWaterways has managed to add a perk: a heated pool or hot tub on the Sun Deck of most of its ships. However, passengers who require an elevator can only access the two main decks, not the Sun Deck or the lowest deck.

In addition to their cache of bicycles, AmaWaterways ships also offer a wellness program, led by an onboard Wellness Host. Classes on the Sun Deck or in the Lounge consist of morning yoga, meditation or core strengthening and afternoon stretching or active walks. Every ship also has a small fitness center and a massage room. AmaMagna also has a full-size pickleball court.

Entertainment-wise, guests can expect nightly music by a piano player/DJ as well as guest performances by locals that range from folkloric song and dance to contemporary music.

Shipwide Wi-Fi is complimentary, but there is no internet center.

Viking's Longships don't feature pools or any wellness/fitness activities beyond a walking track and small putting green, but they do have a library with a good selection of books and an internet corner with laptops guests can use (shipwide Wi-Fi is free as well) and a small gift shop.

Related: Booking your first river cruise? Here's what you need to know.

The Sun Deck features a shaded sitting area, as well as solar panels and an herb garden that allows chefs anytime access to fresh ingredients. Elevators on Viking ships also offer access to the middle decks but not the Sun Deck.

Viking's entertainment is similar to most river cruise lineups and features a musician or DJ as well as local performers with a folkloric, classical or contemporary style.

AmaWaterways and Viking itineraries

best ama river cruises

River cruise itineraries, especially in Europe, don't vary that much from line to line. The cruise season is mainly from late March to mid-December. Certain rivers are more popular — namely the Danube, Rhine and Rhone — and most cruise lines, including AmaWaterways and Viking, visit the same key ports.

AmaWaterways offers 33 different itineraries in Europe on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Garonne and Dordogne, Douro, Main and Moselle rivers, as well as the waterways of Belgium and Holland. Cruises last five to 14 nights.

As of 2024, the company is offering February and March sailings aboard AmaMagna ("Magna on the Danube") on the Danube and AmaLucia ("Captivating Rhine") on the Rhine. Yes, the weather will be a bit nippy, but there will be fewer crowds, and the cruise fares will be hundreds of dollars lower than in warmer months.

The river cruise line does not only sail in Europe. In Egypt, the company features one Nile River cruise itinerary, "Secrets of Egypt & the Nile." It includes a three-night hotel stay in Cairo and a seven-night cruise.

It also offers two seven-night itineraries on the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia.

AmaWaterway's seven itinerary options in Africa all combine a three- or four-night cruise on the Chobe River in Botswana with land stays in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe or Tanzania for a total of 10 to 17 nights.

In late 2024, AmaWaterways will become the first upscale river cruise company to sail the Magdalena River in Colombia. Its two new seven-night itineraries include the "Magic of Colombia" itinerary from Barranquilla to Cartagena and the "Wonders of Colombia" cruise from Cartagena to Barranquilla.

Viking offers 29 different itineraries in Europe on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Garonne & Dordogne, Douro and Elbe rivers, as well as the waterways of Belgium and Holland. While most sailings, lasting seven to 16 nights, are from early March to mid-December, Viking has added a 10-night "Treasures of the Rhine" itinerary between Amsterdam and Basel for 2024, with dates in January and February.

Viking also offers river cruises beyond Europe. In Egypt, Viking offers one itinerary, the 10-night "Pharaohs & Pyramids," featuring four nights in Cairo and a seven-night Nile cruise. Its itinerary through Vietnam and Cambodia is the 14-night "Magnificent Mekong" from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, which includes an eight-day river cruise and hotel stays in Hanoi, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City.

Finally, the new Viking Mississippi cruises five itineraries in America's Heartland. These range from seven-night roundtrips from New Orleans to 21-night journeys that cover the mighty Mississippi's entire 2,350-mile length from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Bottom line

While both AmaWaterways and Viking do have a lot in common — similar itineraries and pricing, excellent cuisine and a generally casual dress code — their differences will matter to certain travelers, especially those who prioritize active wellness or multiple included tour options ... or perhaps even both.

Choose AmaWaterways if you want a slightly more inclusive cruise fare, a good selection of regional wines and a passenger mix that's a bit younger and more international. Choose Viking if you appreciate airy, modern design and enjoy traditional guided tours focused on history, culture and cuisine.

How to choose the perfect stateroom on an amawaterways river cruise.

BA Stateroom AmaWaterways AmaKristina

Sailing the River Rhine in our AmaWaterways BA stateroom.

Carol and I are just home from an AmaWaterways river cruise on the Rhine.

We greatly enjoyed our experience, and it allowed us to get another of Europe’s great rivers under our belt as well as the opportunity to sample another of the river cruise lines vying for your business.

I will be writing a series of articles sharing our experience sailing with AmaWaterways which you can find cataloged here .

Scroll down to the bottom of this article to learn how to obtain complimentary VIP perks when sailing with AmaWaterways.

However, if you’re reading this article, the chances are that you’re looking for some detailed information about AmaWaterways and you might find these articles helpful in your decision-making process:

  • Our Review: Sailing with AmaWaterways River Cruises
  • Inside our AmaWaterways Twin-Balcony Stateroom
  • First Impressions: Boarding AmaWaterways AmaKristina
  • European River Cruise: Direction, Upstream or Downstream

I suppose the greatest mistake we see when people are making decisions on a European river cruise is the tendency to base their decision significantly upon price. And while the price is certainly important, there are many other important considerations for you to make.  For example:

  • Should you sail upstream or downstream?
  • How important is a walkout balcony on a river cruise?
  • How much space do I need or want in my stateroom?
  • Is there a difference in comfort between the different decks on the ship?
  • Should I book directly with the cruise line or use a trusted travel agent?
  • As all of the river cruise ships are the same size, how many passengers does the ship hold?
  • Does the ship offer a heated pool and hot tub, bicycles, fitness center, and a spa for massage, hair, and beauty?

best ama river cruises

As I mentioned in our review article above, AmaWaterways just might be the perfect blend of luxury, value, comfort, and experience.  I suspect Goldilocks might say, “This is perfect.  Not too spartan, yet not too swanky”.

So, with all of that as background, let’s get started on exploring the available staterooms offered by AmaWaterways.

AmaWaterways has 17 ships sailing the world’s rivers with 15 of them sailing in Europe.  Further, 11 of those ships feature AmaWaterways’ unique twin-balcony staterooms.  Therefore, I am going to make the focus of this article on the twin-balcony ships and will be using the recently launched AmaKristina as our model.

AmaWaterways AmaKristina Deck Plan

best ama river cruises

As you can see in the deck plan above, the staterooms are found on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd deck of the ship with the entry level rooms beginning on deck #1 and moving up sequentially through 9 categories all the way to the suites found on deck #3.

I’ll get into the specific categories later in my post, but you should also know that there are 79 staterooms that fall into four broad types:

  • 45 Twin-Balcony Staterooms
  • 18 French Balcony Staterooms
  • 12 Fixed Window Staterooms

It is also worth noting that contrary to normal practices on the rivers, AmaWaterways also offers adjoining staterooms as well as staterooms that allow for triple occupancy.

OK.  Let’s begin looking at the various staterooms available.

Note: click all of the photographs below for larger views.  All photos courtesy of AmaWaterways.

AmaKristina Suite – Violin Deck (deck 3)

best ama river cruises

  • In-room temperature control
  • Deluxe hotel-style bedding with Egyptian linen, down pillows and duvet
  • Spacious bathrooms with multi-jet showerheads
  • Large wardrobe, full-length mirror, hair dryer, safe and direct-dial telephone
  • Flat-screen TV that also works as a computer
  • Entertainment on Demand system providing complimentary TV, movies and music library
  • Complimentary internet and Wi-Fi
  • Complimentary bottled water replenished daily
  • Desk and chair

Some river cruise companies are inclined to put their suites on the very back of the ship for expansive views.  Sounds good, but if you’re headed upstream, you’re going to feel like you are in one of those vibrating beds in a cheap hotel as the engine is right under you.  With AmaWaterways, the best suites are on the top deck and far away from the engine.

Category AA – Violin Deck (deck 3)

best ama river cruises

Six of these staterooms have the ability to accommodate 3 people through the use of a love seat that converts into a bed instead of the two chairs pictured in this photograph.  As I mentioned above, this is quite unusual for a river cruise line to offer this option.

Category AB Cello Deck ( Deck 2)

best ama river cruises

They also feature a French balcony and outside balcony with the following features:

Six of these staterooms can accommodate three people, and two of them have the ability to connect to an adjoining room. Therefore, this would make a nice stateroom combo for a family.  The window you see on the right side of this stateroom is one of those peek-a-boo windows. With the flip of a switch in the bathroom, you can turn the window from frosted to clear to allow more light into the bathroom.

Category BA – Violin Deck (deck 3)

best ama river cruises

There are 12 of these staterooms with two of them with the ability to connect to the adjoining room.  Again, nice for families or couples wanting to travel together.  We stayed in one of these staterooms (#320) and enjoyed it greatly.  Click on our link at the top of this article to learn more about our stateroom.

Category BB – Cello Deck (deck 2)

best ama river cruises

There are 15 of these staterooms with four of them offering adjoining capabilities and two of them that can also connect with the slightly larger AB staterooms.

Category CA – Violin and Cello Decks (decks 2 &3)

If you would prefer to spend less of your travel budget on your stateroom, but prefer to get some fresh air into your stateroom, then these are the staterooms for you. They all feature a French balcony design with a large sliding-glass door that opens the outside into your room.  Note: these staterooms do not offer a walkout veranda like all of the staterooms above offer.

Along with the French balcony, these staterooms offer the following features:

Category E and D – Piano Deck (deck 1)

With two fixed windows, these staterooms offer the following features:

Tips for Choosing the Perfect AmaWaterways Stateroom

  • Contrary to ocean cruising, you should give no attention or worry to ship movement on the rivers.  That’s right, no seasickness!  In fact, from a movement perspective, it is difficult to perceive when the ship is actually sailing without looking out the window.
  • Having said that, you may want to give some consideration to engine vibration in the selection of your stateroom.  The closer you are to the ship’s engine, (rear and deck 1 staterooms) the more potential exists that you will feel a vibration from the ship’s engine when she is sailing.  As a great majority of the sailing is done at night, this will likely be most perceptible when you are in your bed at night.  And, if you’re sailing upstream ( see my article about upstream and downstream ), this is likely to be even more noticeable.  As I said in my article, I wouldn’t make a huge deal out of this.  However, if you’re a light sleeper, book a sailing downstream or get the highest and/or most forward cabin your budget will allow.  There is a reason that the more expensive suites are the highest and most forward cabins on the ship.  🙂
  • While it’s rather difficult to know for sure, but one of the factors to consider is how much time you think you’re going to spend in your stateroom . If you think you’re going to only sleep in the room and that you would be happy to spend all of your waking hours in public spaces, then the smaller staterooms just might be your best choice.  However, if you’re on a long day sail, and you think you might like to spend some alone-time in your stateroom, then something larger or perhaps with an open-air option might be your best choice.  When we sailed the Rhine, we were sailing upstream, and it took us nearly 24 hours to get from Amsterdam to Cologne with the strong currents.  I really, really enjoyed the quiet time in our stateroom as we sailed along.  I had both of our twin-balcony doors open, and greatly enjoyed the fresh air and the light breeze coming off of the Rhine.
  • While this is certainly a personal opinion, I don’t like staterooms that are smaller than 200ish sq. ft .  We’ve sailed in 150 sq. ft. in the past and it seemed that we were always tripping over one another in the stateroom.
  • Make your booking decision as soon as it is practical for your schedule and wallet .  All of these ships carry less than 200 people, and the best staterooms ALWAYS get scooped up first and quickly.  If you want to have options, heed my advice or pick through the scraps.

Complimentary Perks for your AmaWaterways Booking

best ama river cruises

Well, the first thing you need to know is that the price for the cruise is the same, either way.  Secondly, we would argue that it makes more sense to let someone who has actually sailed with AmaWaterways and has been to Europe numerous times be your guide.  While the young folks sitting in the cubicles at AmaWaterways are very nice indeed, most of them can’t bring you the valuable first-hand experience we possess.

Thirdly, as we are affiliated with Virtuoso®, the world’s leading international luxury travel agency network, it is very likely that we will have complimentary VIP perks to add to AmaWaterways’ best offers.

I would like information and pricing, please.

Hi, Diane. I will send you an email, and we can begin a dialog. It would be difficult to try and do that here. Thanks for reaching out! 🙂

Another consideration is that on some of the more busy rivers you are often “rafted up” alongside other boats, so that you cannot open the curtains in that expensive cabin you have paid for. We have been on Uniworld balcony, AMA double balcony, and last month on Avalon bottom deck. For the money saved it was fine and will enable me to go on another trip sooner. Just a consideration. I enjoy your newsletter and will contact you for our next cruise.

We agree. I have long maintained, that on a river cruise, the extra space is our motivation for the larger staterooms. Plus, if you’re going to do a stateroom in the belly of the whale, make certain that you pick a sailing that is headed downstream and you’ll enjoy far less engine vibration. 🙂 When you’re ready, we look forward to serving you. Also, we’ll want to start the booking process early as remarkably, 2018 is already starting to fill up.

I’m interested in a 2018 Christmas cruise on AmaWaterways. Preference is a sailing on the Rhine and we are flexible if it is upstream or downstream. The key factor is there are 3 of us, so the question is are there cabins that can accommodate 3 adults? Any hint as to cost for 3 in a room. Thanks for any insight you can lend.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Carol and I were trying out another ocean cruise line in Europe. I’ll send you an email to begin a dialog. Stay tuned…

thank you for the information, we will be leaving soon on Amawaterways Rhine river cruise, (Prima) we are trying to decide if we should have twin beds or double, is a double two twins pushed together or a solid bed? i have had a hard time finding a picture with twin beds, i did finally find one and they look kind of small, have you seen them?

Hi Marietta,

The double is two twins pushed together. However, from a practical point of view, you really can’t tell when sleeping on the bed. 🙂

A question about the triple occupancy cabins – do you still pay the same per person price or is there a reduced per person rate due to 3 people occupying the same room?

As of this writing, the third passenger in a stateroom pays 75% of the individual fare. Having said that, if the third person is an adult, it might make more sense to consider one of AmaWaterways solo-traveler staterooms rather than have 3 adults cramped in a stateroom.

We are interested in the Danube for September or early October with another couple. We like more activity, so are thinking Ama is better suited to us, as well as, a gluten allergy. Can you tell me if there are any rooms with balconies left?

I’ll check and send you an email. Thanks for stopping by our website! 🙂

Pingback: AmaWaterways: 2019 European Wine River Cruise Brochure | The Roaming Boomers

Are the single staterooms half the price of a regular room or a little less than a regular room. We are trying to travel with 3 of us. Me, my husband and my sister. Please advise since we are currently looking to book a cruise for July 2019.

AmaWaterways will designate a small number of their standard staterooms for solo travelers. The stateroom is no different; you’re just not being charged a solo traveler supplement that can be as much as another full fare with some cruise lines. So, my advice is book early as these solo traveler staterooms tend to go quickly. Also, as you may have picked up from our articles, we also have complimentary perks of varying amounts for every single AmaWaterways sailing. So, the price is the same, we have perks, and you also get our expert advice along the way as well. Carol and I book over 500 ocean and river cruises each year, so we know what we’re doing. 🙂

Hi, I booked AMA Lea Melodies of the Danube for this coming August. We are traveling with another couple and I didn’t do any of the research. I allowed the other couple to do so, and we agreed to their recommendation. However, now the trip is nearing, I have started looked at the cabins and I found your newsletter. Our friends get the last E cabin room on the boat, and we upgraded to a CB cabin with french balcony. But now that I look at both rooms, their E cabin is bigger than our CB cabin. We are also in the farthest cabin to the back of the boat on the Violin deck. Did we make a mistake? We paid a lot for this trip (and a fair amount more than our friends) and now I am worried. Would very much like to hear your thoughts either way. Thanks in advance.

Anyone ever stay in room 331 on the Moro violin deck? Smaller room at 175sq feet and not sure what to compare it to – have been on Viking and Uniowrld. Thoughts on best way to go?

On the AmaBella (AmaWaterways), in the BB category stateroom, there are two forward rooms (by the elevator) and six staterooms toward the back. I realize front is usually better, but should I be concerned about the elevator and noise. Also, being assigned to stateroom 201, is your view blinded a bit. Please advise.

While I generally avoid the very front room for fear of noise, we have to remember that these ships are full of baby boomers. You won’t have scores of 10-year-olds running up and down the stairs making noise like you might on a much larger vessel. Therefore, I wouldn’t run away simply because you might have the first room. And if you’re still concerned, take one of the staterooms farther back in the ship. The only downside to those rooms is a longer walk to breakfast each morning.

As a single traveler on the Amaways Bordeaux, Amadolce ship, my travel agent can get me a deal of a D or E cabin at 125% of the double occupancy rate on the piano deck. There is a $377 difference between the two. There are 8 cabins on the piano deck and only 1 E cabin available which is closer to the rear of the ship however they all look like they are on the middle of the ship. Why would I want or not want the cheaper cabin? Is there a vibration? Will I hear more engine noise? I understand both rooms are fixed windows. I would appreciate your input. Many thanks!

I would advise our clients to take the E stateroom. When you pull into the port daily, sometimes in the wee hours of the morning, you will be farther away from the possible noise in the lobby above your head. When the ship pulls into port, they will throw out the gangplanks and haul the garbage off and fresh supplies on. The E-category stateroom will keep you farther away from the possible noise above your head.

Could you give me insight as to whether room 201 Cello deck on AmaLea is a good room? Is it noisy due to its location?

We generally prefer the next room back, but I would take that room over one in the back of the ship. This is particularly true if you sail upstream against the river’s current. We’d be honored to help you with this booking if you like. The price is the same as booking it yourself with AmaWaterways, plus we have additional complimentary perks to add to your booking. Give us a call: 480-550-1235. 🙂

Insider Today

One of the best vacations I've ever taken was a river cruise. It was a fascinating trip down the Danube River in Europe with Disney Cruises, focused on Christmas markets. After experiencing the river cruise lifestyle, I was sold.

I've always been a fan of traditional cruise line journeys, but a river cruise is much more intimate and in many cases, luxurious. These sleek ships generally host less than 200 passengers and go where giant cruise liners cannot, such as the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Mekong, Mississippi, and Nile Rivers.

A river cruise is kind of like a floating hotel, except you'll visit a variety of places but only have to unpack once. They also tend to have more inclusions than a traditional cruise. In addition to food and drink — with carefully curated cuisine reflective of the areas being visited — many river cruises include land excursions, which is a huge advantage that adds tremendous value.

Book a cruise on Avalon Waterways

Most of the Avalon's cabins are Panorama Suites, which offer a wide view of the rivers on which you are traveling. Book their "Open-Air Balcony" and enjoy wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows that open for fresh air. The beds in the Panorama Suites are also cleverly placed against the opposite wall so guests may view the scenery from bed.

As for the bed itself, guests can choose their own mattress and pillow firmness from Avalon's Comfort Collection. The entry-level cabin is the Avalon Deluxe Stateroom. It lacks the grandeur of the suites, and is small at about 172 square feet, and has small windows peaking above the waterline.

While many cruise lines have a strict dining schedule, these ships offer several different onboard restaurants. The Panorama Dining Room serves daily four-course à la carte dinners along with complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks, or guests can choose the more casual Panorama Bistro or Sky Grill.

Avalon offers many onboard presentations, including the celebrity-driven  Storyteller Series, which is set to include the likes of Candace Bushnell ("Sex and the City"), Gillian Flynn ("Gone Girl"), Cheryl Strayed ("Wild"), and Diana Gabaldon (Outlander").

Notable excursions included in the price:

  • On the Rhône sailing, go spelunking in Viviers to underground caves as part of a wine tasting adventure.
  • On the Danube sailing, see the Wachau Valley from a canoe and visit a hidden beach
  • Learn to paint like Van Gogh at the Ateliers Art Institute in Amsterdam.

Book a cruise on Viking River Cruise

Viking is the largest river cruise operator with over 50 Longships in their fleet. The design is sleek and minimal and there are usually five tiers of cabins.

Standard staterooms, which are the least expensive, hover at the water level, and come in at about 150 square feet. At the top end are large well-appointed suites with two full-sized rooms and great views, measuring about 445 square feet.

Indulge in regional cuisine on Viking ships flavored with herbs grown in an on-board garden, though familiar classics are always available. The dishes are paired with a selection of wines from the area that is being explored.

Guest lectures and performers also come aboard to highlight the destination, from Viennese opera to Portuguese fado, and local craft and culinary demonstrations are sprinkled throughout voyages as well, such as lace-making and Austrian apple strudel.

  • While on the Danube, take a dip in legendary thermal baths in Budapest, Hungry.
  • On the Mekong, go on a guided tour of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
  • When cruising the Nile, ride a camel as you visit the pyramids in Cairo, Egypt.

Book a cruise on AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways, with over 25 ships, is known for having a smaller amount of passengers on board. The average is about 156 guests, which is far less than most cruise lines.

Many of the staterooms have balconies that offer panoramic views and fresh air. Their twin-balcony staterooms feature both a French balcony and an outside balcony. While the suites are about 350 square feet, the standard stateroom is about 170 square feet with fixed windows at the waterline.

The cuisine served onboard AmaWaterways ships is inspired by regional dishes and made with locally sourced ingredients. Throughout the voyages, they feature special drinking and dining events for guests along with entertainment themed to the country you're visiting such as a string quartet or folk dancing.

While there are plenty of places to curl up with a book or play a game in the public spaces, a bevy of activities will lure you onshore. AmaWaterways has a diverse selection of excursions, from low key to active experiences.

In 2023, they will launch Seven River Journeys which will cover seven rivers and 14 countries over the course of 45 nights (starting at $24,999 per person, double occupancy).

  • While in Germany, visit the oldest brewery in Nuremberg for a bratwurst and beer.
  • Bike along the Danube River between Dürnstein and Melk in Austria's Wachau Valley.
  • Sail through France and visit the picturesque Old Town in Strasbourg.

AmaWaterways requires COVID-19 vaccinations for all their guests. COVID-19 procedures are available  here .

Book a cruise on Scenic

Scenic operates custom-made vessels and a variety of cabins types. Standard suites are sparse, small (just 160 square feet) and lack balconies. A good mid-tier option is the   Royal Balcony suite, which comes with a great view and perks like daily fruit skewers, canapes, and petit fours. All upgraded suites come with butler service, nightly turndown, and a laundry concierge.

Guests dine on four-course dinners, complemented by regional wines. There is also destination-themed entertainment; for example, while sailing through Austria a musician is likely to play musical pieces from "The Sound of Music."

Scenic offers various excursions, from visiting World Heritage Sites to a round of golf. Their National Geographic sailings are particularly of note and include a variety of educational, expert-led travel excursions and talks.

  • In Portugal, visit the Burmester Cellars for a fine dining experience along with a traditional Fado musical accompaniment.
  • While in Russia, visit the Palace of Prince Vladimir for an exclusive concert and ballet performance inside the last Imperial palace to be built in St Petersburg.
  • Automobile lovers have the chance to visit BMW World to see luxury German-made cars.

Book a cruise on UniWorld

Uniworld stands out immediately for its impressively designed interiors; each ship is themed to the areas that ships sail through. For example, on the S.S. BonVoyage in France, the Le Salon Champagne was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's home, Villa Majorelle.

The cabins and public areas are also beautifully appointed with art, antiques, hand-painted murals, and luxury linens. Book a signature suite and indulge in larger marble bathrooms, a fully-stocked bar, and fresh cookies and fruit delivered daily.

In addition to traditional ships, there are also sleek black U by Uniworld boats, which offer a modern take on river cruising with a younger demographic in mind. They often feature DJs, silent discos, mixology classes, yoga, and rooftop camping (tents are supplied). These cruises offer 25% off the fare for travelers 4 to 17 years old when traveling with an adult (suites excluded).

Like most cruises, the food served is reflective of your destination's local cuisine and there is also a light menu and options for vegetarians, vegans, and kids.

In fact, there are many kid-friend amenities, such as cooking classes, a young travelers' lounge, and a game room complete with PlayStation, games, movies, and local treats.

Book a cruise on American Queen Steamboat Company

As the name implies, the American Queen Steamboat Company uses old-school-style riverboats for their journey. These state-of-the-art, authentic paddle wheelers can accommodate from 150 to 400 guests, depending on the ship.

Choose from a wide variety of accommodations from well-appointed suites to small no-frills single staterooms that are a mere 80 square feet. Some sailings have Loft Suites, which are two stories with floor-to-ceiling windows and have two full bathrooms, a dining area, a lounge with a Queen sofa-bed, a balcony, and an upstairs bedroom.

As expected, the ships serve American cuisines with options for fresh lobster or USDA Prime Beef. Unique to riverboats is the two-level theater, the Grand Saloon, found on the American Queen. Although children are allowed, the line does not offer extra amenities or perks for kids.

Notable Excursions (note, these excursions are not included and involve an extra fee):

  • In Memphis, opt for The Elvis Experience with a tour of Graceland.
  • For those with an interest in history, try The Life and Legacy of Abraham Lincoln tour.
  • For adventure, go on a Cajun Swamp Tour.

Book a cruise on Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises river cruise line features all-suite ships. The cabins are large with King-sized beds, which is a rarity in river cruising. Many also have balconies and walk-in closets, and all are above the waterline.

All are butler-serviced river ships with a high, almost one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio. Solo travelers will appreciate that there are dedicated Solo Traveler Suites with no surcharge for a non-double occupancy booking, which is unheard of with cruising.

Dining is Michelin-inspired and farm-to-table fare. Activities include educational lectures from visiting professors, and well as local entertainment, and even Broadway-level performances. The ship's "Design Your Time" concierge service will help personalize your onboard and onshore experiences.

  • Visit Salzburg, Austria, the town featured in "The Sound of Music."

Book a cruise on Tauck

Tauck recently renovated many of their ships, most of which carry just 84 or 98 guests, while a few larger boats accommodate a max of 130 guests.

The Tauck Suites are large, at over 300 square feet and have a large bed as well as a fold-out sofa. Most cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows to save space in the cabin, and the most affordable is Category 1, which is about 150 square feet and has small windows and a little bathroom with a shower.

Meals come with complimentary beverages, including house wine, beer, and premium spirits. Those are also offered all day, not just at mealtimes, which is a nice addition.

Tauck prides itself on offering off-the-beaten-track experiences in each destination, including multigenerational family tours that are curated to include itineraries for both kids and adults. There are also Christmas market sailings that include tree-trimming, caroling, and a Christmas dinner feast.

Book a cruise on Adventures by Disney River Cruise

Adventures by Disney, the guided, family vacation arm of the Walt Disney Company, offers unique journeys sprinkled with signature Disney magic. Each day, you'll receive an enamel pin reflecting the day's adventure such as Mickey dressed as Mozart or Donald cooking goulash.

There is a wide variety of cabin categories from a 350 square foot suite that sleeps four with a balcony to Category D, the most affordable cabin, which is about 170 square feet, sleeps two, and features small windows. Families will appreciate adjoining cabins, which are a rarity for a river cruise line. Adventures by Disney recommends that children be 8 and up, but they only need to be 4 and up to sail.

The Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, and their itineraries, both onboard and onshore, have something for every age group. Kids love the Junior Adventurer dinners or Disney movie nights, and there is also a Just Teens program with dinners and separate tour groups at various destinations.

But if you think this a Disney river cruise would be all about the kids, you're wrong. Grownups may enjoy adult-only dinners and wine tastings, and there is actually a nice variety of adult-exclusive sailings (generally when school is in session), which offer more sophisticated offerings.

  • Visit Schloss Hof in Bratislava for chocolate tasting and learn to waltz in the grand ballroom.
  • Take a thrilling alpine toboggan run in Germany's Black Forest.
  • Learn to make goulash and feast on it in the Hungarian countryside while listening to a live performance by Hungarian folk musicians.

COVID-19 testing and/or vaccination is required before travel. During the trip, Guests will be required to complete a self-assessment daily. COVID-19 procedures are available  here .

Book a cruise on Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions is all about luxury with a modern take. They offer a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio, so guests relish in lavish, five-star treatment and the boats have only about 15 to 20 cabins, meaning, no more than 30 to 40 guests per sailing. In effect, it feels kind of like a chartered yacht.

The suites, which are about 300 square feet, have floor-to-ceiling windows, King-sized beds, and a lounge area with a daybed. There is a price difference between the first deck and the second deck, with the former being more affordable. Some rooms have balconies.

Since Aqua Expeditions ships are so much smaller than the average river cruise liner, they can visit more remote destinations and the excursions reflect that, from watching Amazonian pink dolphins to receiving a blessing from a Buddhist monk while traveling the Mekong.

  • Visit the Amazon Rainforest with Aqua Expeditions' naturalist guides.
  • Come face-to-face with the gentle manta rays of Komodo National Park in Indonesia.
  • Go kayaking in the Mekong's waterways.

How does a river cruise work?

A river cruise is an all-inclusive journey where you unpack once but visit many destinations. They are smaller than traditional cruise ships and boast more tailored offerings, such as carefully curated cuisine that is reflective of the areas being visited. On all these journeys — from the Ganges to the Rhône — dining is a big part of the adventure.

River cruise ships dock near city centers, enabling visitors to explore on their own or take advantage of the array of excursions organized by the cruise line, from going on a strenuous hike to touring a castle, or sipping wine at a vineyard. There are a fair amount of UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the itineraries, which are almost always awe-inspiring.

These excursions are all included in the price of the cruise and are considered part of the river experience, although they aren't included for the sole domestic option on our list, the American Queen Steamboat Company.

Are river cruises all-inclusive?

Most river cruises are all-inclusive with all meals, beverages, and almost all excursions included in the rate.

However, Crystal Cruises has some excursions that incur an added cost, and all of the American Queen Steamboat Company excursions are additional (although they do offer hop-on hop-off bus tours).

Are river cruise cabins small?

Yes. Due to the size of the boats, the cabins are small, ranging from 80 square feet to about 300 square feet. But since there is so much to do, odds are that the cabin will be only used for sleeping and downtime.

When is the best time to take a river cruise?

It depends on what you are looking for in your vacation. For example, European river cruises run from   March through December. The summer months will be far warmer, while the December cruises are cold but come with the added bonus of experiencing Christmas festivities.

Can solo travelers take a river cruise?

Because most people travel in pairs or a family on a cruise, rates are based on double occupancy. Solo travelers are still welcome but may have to pay a   supplement fee for booking as a single-occupancy rather than a double.

What are the best river cruises for families with kids?

Adventures by Disney is the best option for families since they curate their onboard and onshore activities with kids and teens in mind. Uniworld is also a good choice with an array of added perks for kids of all ages.

Otherwise, most welcome children but don't offer extra programming for them, and Viking doesn't allow children at all.

Will I get seasick on a river cruise?

Odds are you will not get motion sickness on a river cruise since large waves or currents do not hit the ships. The water, especially on European cruises, is very calm.

Ama Waterways review: A river cruise on the delightful Danube

best ama river cruises

Lured out of bed by the promise of a mug of piping hot coffee just down the hall, I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and yawned as I casually pulled back the curtains to let the sun stream in over our balcony.

With a start, I gasped and was suddenly wide awake as the panoramic windows revealed one of Europe’s most quintessential sights spread out in front of me: the town of Dürnstein, Austria, complete with its iconic blue and white Baroque church tower surrounded by the Wachau Valley vineyards and the ruins of a medieval castle perched on the hilltop.

Ama Waterways review of Danube river cruise

Dürnstein is so photogenic that it’s often featured in ads for river cruises on the Danube, which is exactly how we’d found ourselves sailing past it during this ethereal morning with Ama Waterways.

Overnight, our sleek ship the AmaSonata silently glided along the tranquil river as we slept, revealing a brand new destination with the beginning of each day.

AmaSonata

The opportunity to easily see so many different places is one of the advantages of a European river cruise, where guests only unpack once then get to enjoy the highlights of multiple countries throughout the week without lifting a finger (or suitcase).

On this voyage Melodies of the Danube we saw Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Czechia and Germany, often anchoring right in a capital city for easy access to all the best sights.

Ama Waterways river cruises

Ama Waterways is an elevated small cruise ship experience, with a strong focus on cuisine and incredible attention to detail from the worldly staff.

best ama river cruises

The company has nearly two dozen ships exploring European rivers like the Duoro, Rhine and Moselle, while a handful of others navigate waterways in exotic locales including Egypt, Botswana, Colombia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

With such a variety of far flung itineraries it’s no wonder Ama has plenty of repeat guests: on our voyage, we met a Canadian couple who has sailed with them more than 50 times!

best ama river cruises

The relatively low guest count ensures attentive service ( AmaSonata holds 162 passengers, and during our late-October cruise there were less than 70 guests–most sailings have an average of 156), and you don’t have to spend a dime on board.

All meals, beer and wine while dining and a nightly happy hour are included, as well as a variety of tours each day. The only exception is that some itineraries include an optional excursion, such as the classical concert in Vienna some people on our cruise opted to pay extra for.

best ama river cruises

There’s also free wi-fi, a shockingly affordable laundry service, nightly entertainment like opera singers and string trios, and the myAmaCruise app where guests get all of the information about the voyage at their fingertips.

For those up for a bit of adventure, Ama is also one of the best in class when it comes to wellness and active experiences with complimentary bike rentals, hiking and cycling tours and even a dedicated on-board trainer to lead complimentary fitness classes. Heck, the AmaMagna even has a full size pickleball court on the sun deck!

Ama Waterways ships

Forget those mega cruises AKA floating hotels–instead, Ama bills its ships as ‘floating sanctuaries’ for a more intimate experience.

best ama river cruises

Staterooms range from 155 to 350 square feet, and up to 710 sq ft on the wider AmaMagna .

While there isn’t as much storage space in the cabins as I’ve seen on similar ships from Viking and Windstar , the spacious bathroom, french balcony and full balcony (a normally rare occurrence) more than made up for it.

best ama river cruises

AmaSonata has two restaurants, a library, lounge and bar, along with massage rooms, a salon and well-equipped gym.

The top deck boasts a heated pool with a swim-up bar, and we often found ourselves gravitating to the cushy loungers which turned out to be the perfect place to curl up for a midday nap or admire landmarks like Devin Castle as we sailed out of Bratislava.

Tours on an Ama Waterways river cruise

Ama Waterways cruises are set up so you can be as busy–or relaxed–as you want.

Each day brings a new destination (sometimes two, as we experienced in Linz, Austria when we could also enjoy a day trip to Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov ), and there are a variety of guided tours to choose from should you choose to head out and explore.

best ama river cruises

Each stop has some sort of city tour, and those who aren’t up for navigating cobblestone streets can join the more laid-back ‘gentle walker’ group or a food-focused excursion to sample local specialties.

Want to kick it up a notch?

In cities like Bratislava and Passau we eschewed bus rides in favour of hiking up to castles, and one of my absolute favourite days was the 16 mile bike ride through the Wachau Valley. We cycled along the Danube as soft light illuminated the vineyards where the scent of sweet grapes wafted over us, ending at the Benedictine Melk Abbey to admire its sunshine-yellow facade.

Cycling past vineyards in the Wachau Valley

Some of the guides we had were absolutely stellar, like Pavol Krajcer in Bratislava who expertly wove historical details with personal stories about his own life and his family’s experience during the division of the former Czechoslovakia, often in comedic fashion.

Ama also offers pre or post cruise land packages where all the details are taken care of to extend your trip, from luxury hotels to transfers to activities.

Dining on an Ama Waterways Danube river cruise

One of the areas where Ama Waterways really shines is the food–truly some of the best cuisine I’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship.

best ama river cruises

With an emphasis on serving up regional dishes and wine pairings alongside comfort foods us North Americans are used to (yes, you can get a burger anytime), dining on board is sometimes an hours-long event.

Multi-course menus are prepared by expert chefs, and Ama’s European ships are members of the prestigious culinary society La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

best ama river cruises

We slurped up goulash in Hungary, tucked into warm apple strudels in Austria, and noshed on pretzels paired with beer in Germany during an Oktoberfest celebration. Prost!

Globe Guide tip: Sign up for one of the first Chef’s Table dinners when you board. This reservation-only experience is in a more intimate setting than the main restaurant, and it’s a great way to meet other passengers.

best ama river cruises

It’s also worth mentioning the nightly happy hour, which was a wonderful way to cap off a day of adventures and catch up with fellow guests ahead of dinner and the daily briefing from our cruise manager. Cocktails, wine, beer and champagne flow freely during that hour, and are all complimentary–yes, even the likes of old fashioneds, cosmos and martinis.

More to love about an Ama Waterways cruise

I was seriously impressed with how nimble Ama was at adapting when necessary: when we were scheduled to sail out of Budapest , unseasonably hot temperatures resulted in the Danube’s water levels being too low for river cruises. With just a couple days notice they ended up moving the ship to Komarno, Slovakia, arranged transport for the 90 minute drive, and still offered Budapest tours for anyone wanting to explore the city.

This actually worked out great as we’d already spent time in Hungary’s capital, so we got to see a new destination in Slovakia and also take part in the impromptu tour of Gyor, Hungary.

The Courtyard of Europe in Komarno, Slovakia

The crew was also monitoring conditions up to the minute, and rearranged our day in Bratislava to leave a few hours earlier so we’d be able to get to Vienna as planned (I heard a rumour that another cruise company kept to their original schedule, and the boat got stuck there for an extra day).

best ama river cruises

Another pleasant surprise was that there weren’t very many of those annoying announcements over the intercom system (if you’re a frequent cruiser, you know what I’m talking about).

On embarkation night, staff demonstrated the safety procedures while we remained comfortably seated in the lounge drinking champagne, instead of making us awkwardly muster outside like every other ship I’ve ever been on requires.

best ama river cruises

Overall, we had a fantastic time on the luxurious Ama Waterways Danube cruise onboard the AmaSonata , which is an excellent choice for those who enjoy active adventures, great food and seeing new destinations with almost no effort.

Globe Guide experienced this sailing as a guest of Ama Waterways. As always, hosts have no editorial influence on articles.

The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

Land of a Thousand Rhythms

With an exceptionally diverse population, vibrant cultural traditions and festivals, and more than 1,000 styles of music performed and enjoyed throughout its borders, it is no wonder that Colombia is considered the “Land of a Thousand Rhythms.” The country’s rich musical and cultural heritage, history and natural beauty intrigued us, drawing our Co-Founders Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst to explore the Magdalena River. As owners of our family-owned and operated river cruise line, they closely identified with how important family is to Colombian society, where multiple generations and extended families often live within the same household and pass down their trade and traditions for centuries. Following their unforgettable experience in Colombia, Rudi and Kristin knew they had to share it with our cherished guests.

Outstanding Universal Value

On our specially curated itinerary, guests will experience sites and cultural traditions that have been recognized by UNESCO for their outstanding universal value. From the military architecture and strategic location of Cartagena to the cultural heritage of the village of Palenque, to the historic center of Santa Cruz de Mompox, we are delighted to share these incredible places with you. In addition, both the region’s vallenato music and Barranquilla’s Carnaval celebration are inscribed on UNESCO’s list for their intangible cultural heritage – and you will experience both during your journey with us through Colombia.

Nature and Birdlife

The great Magdalena basin harbors many species of flora and fauna not found anywhere else on the planet – perhaps most significant are its birds, making our river cruises the ideal vacation for birdwatchers. While sailing along the river through specific regions, you may have the good fortune to spot beautifully colored Cianeguo hummingbirds as well as the Northern screamer, known locally as Chauna chavaria – which you can only see in this region of the world.

Personality of the Magdalena River

There is perhaps no river that embraces diversity more than the Magdalena, described by novelist Gabriel García Márquez as the “River of Life.” Many explorers sailed along its northerly path, paving the way for trade and communication between the Andes and the Caribbean Sea – and in fact the river basin today is home to approximately 80% of Colombia’s population, a melting pot comprised of Indigenous, European and African ancestry.

The Magdalena is the only river in the Caribbean region and its welcoming waters uniquely flow from south to north. The river serves as the cultural heart of Colombia, intermingling the art, stories, traditions and biodiversity of many incredible towns we cannot wait to venture through with you.

Enriching Colombian Culture

We believe that travel is a force of good in the world, enabling us to become more appreciative and accepting of the unique history and cultural traditions that set us apart as well as the human values that unite us. As we continue to expand our AmaFamily and embrace our global diversity, we could not be more excited to share with you the music, dance, festivals, cuisine and most of all the warm, spirited and diverse people that make Latin America – and Colombia, in particular – so beautiful. best ama river cruises

No journey to Colombia is complete without hearing some of the country’s celebrated music. Much of the music is a blend of Spanish and European influences with indigenous sounds and African beats. From lively cumbia to the more emotional vallenato, rest assured that AmaWaterways will provide ample opportunities for you to hear a variety of live performances featuring regional music both on board and on shore.

Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez was born in Colombia and has been considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century – and the most prolific Latin American writer in history. He lived for a time in Barranquilla and later worked in Bogotá, but it wasn’t until he moved to Mexico City that he wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude, completed in 1967, for which he is renowned. He is also the author of the famous novel, Love in the Time of Cholera. We encourage you to get inspired for your future Colombia journey by reading these books in Spanish or in their English translations.

Barranquilla, included on both our Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia itineraries, boasts the second largest Carnaval celebration in the world, which has been declared a “Masterpiece of Humanity’s Intangible and Oral Heritage” by UNESCO. Boisterous parades, colorful flowers, daring fire breathers and talented musicians take over the streets of Barranquilla each year around late February through early March and it is a sight to behold. On our Magdalena River cruises, you will get a taste of Carnaval on every departure with an exclusive experience just for AmaWaterways guests!

Colombian Caribbean Cuisine

Food along Colombia’s Caribbean coast often features ingredients such as coconut, plantains and of course, a variety of freshly caught fish and crustaceans. One of the seafood staples in this region is Cazuela de Mariscos, a hearty combination of white fish, squid, shrimp, prawns and lobster served in a creamy broth with a side of rice and fried plantains. Coconut rice is particularly beloved and is served with patacones (fried, flattened plantains). Another regional specialty is the arepa de huevo – twice fried, filled with a fried egg and paired with a spicy sauce. We look forward to treating you to the finest Colombian cuisine on board – and perhaps even a special tasting of Colombian chocolate paired with local rum, chirrinchi (made from fermented cane sugar) and Agua ardiente (fruit brandy)!

Colombian Coffee

Much how the terroir of a certain region impacts its wine, the landscape, climate and environment of Colombia have made its coffee unlike any other in the world. Hand harvested – often by Indigenous families at high altitudes – the coffee beans of the Caribbean region are primarily from Sierra Nevada. This UNESCO-designated mountain soars 5,800 meters above sea level, and the coffee produced there is 100% organic. It is also said to be among the most valuable coffees in the world. We look forward to sharing this and a variety of other Colombian coffees with you!
