Italy in November: all you need to know to plan the perfect trip

Visiting Italy in November: all you need to know to plan a trip! The best places to visit in November in Italy, when to book what, what to expect from the weather.

November is not the first month that comes to mind when planning a trip to Italy.

However, it is not a bad time to visit Italy, if you don’t mind the occasional rainy day!

An autumnal month, November feels wintery in most of Italy and it is likely to treat you to a mix of rain and sunny days and, overall, increasingly chilly temperatures.

If this sounds like a discouraging picture, let me reassure you: November in Italy can also be wonderful!

With smaller crowds, lower costs and the lack of the scorching summer sun, November in Italy is a glorious time for sightseeing and can be one of the best times to visit popular destinations without getting overwhelmed by the crowds.

This is all you need to know to plan a trip to Italy in November

The weather in Italy in November: what to expect

November is autumn in Italy.

During this month, the summer is well and truly over in Italy and while you may still find mild enough temperatures in some localities, especially in the South and at the start of the month, you will spend most of your time wearing a jacket and, sometimes, reaching out for your umbrella.

Towards the end of the month, you can expect the weather to have transitioned to winter.

You can find here >>> our packing list for November in Italy (we always travel around Italy in November as the kids’ school takes a break and we make the most of it!)

November in Italy is first and foremost a time of changeable weather so what you will actually find once in Italy is not truly predictable until the very last minute.

However, to give you an idea of temperature, historically, the temperatures for November in Italy were:

November festivities in Italy you need to know about

The 1st of November is a national holiday in Italy and therefore a day off for locals.

If it falls close to a weekend, this may result in a long weekend which means you will compete with locals as well as tourists for accommodation, seats on trains etc.

If planning on being on the road around that day or planning on train travel, advance booking is recommended (see also below)

The best places to visit in Italy in November

It is hard to recommend places to visit in November as depending on the weather on the day, the same place can be wonderful or miserable!

Lake Como for instance can be an absolute delight at this time, as the photo above shows, or it can be wet and excessively quiet.

Expectations and taste do play a large part in how pleasant Italy in November is or isn’t.

Overall, these are our favorite for the season:

Rome in November

November is a rainy month in Rome but a great one to enjoy the city with smaller crowds and to visit on a budget.

At this time, you may still be able to have lunch outdoors and you can easily enjoy time exploring Rome piazzas and main attractions and the city’s beautiful museums.

The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican City will be busy yet less so than at other times.

November is as close to a low season as Rome ever gets!

Venice in November

Venice is misty, intimate and romantic in November.

While you may need to wrap up and endure rain (and potentially high water- check the forecast before going), November will allow you to see Venice with smaller crowds and still enjoy its lagoon.

Make sure you take a ferry ride to Burano to brighten up your November day with the colors of this stunning town.

Tuscany in November

Tuscany in the fall is stunning.

This is the time to enjoy the stunning foliage of the Tuscan forests and to taste the warming food of this amazing terroir .

November in Tuscany is a time for long walks in hilltop towns followed by dinners in local restaurants and also the best time to enjoy Tuscany’s hot springs.

Whether you like organized thermal spas or free springs that flow straight from the mountains, Tuscany will deliver. You can find here >>> our guide to hot springs in Tuscany .

Radicofani Tuscany

The best places to visit in Tuscany in November are:

  • San Gimignano
  • Montepulciano
  • San Quirico d’Orcia
  • Monticchiello
  • Bagno Vignoni

Umbria in November

Often considered the little sister of Tuscany, Umbria is stunning in any season and can be a real treat in November

Not to be missed are:

  • Citta’ di Castello

duomo of Orvieto Umbria

Amalfi Coast in November

The Amalfi Coast is hit and miss in November.

On one hand, the Costiera lives its low season at this time, meaning you can enjoy some of its usually very busy towns almost on your own.

On the other, the low season means you will miss out on swimming and boating and you may have fewer choices in terms of transport, the tourist ferries operating on a reduced schedule

Overall, this is a good destination in November only for those who don’t mind the peculiar atmosphere of a sea destination in winter.

Find here >>> our recommended Amalfi Coast itinerary

Pompeii in November

November is a great time to visit the archaeological site of Pompeii, one of the most beautiful in Italy.

In November, rain is possible; however, the site is at its best as you will be able to explore without the scorching temperatures of spring and summer, particularly unbearable in this open-air park.

The best way to visit Pompeii in November is by staying a few days in the area: staying in Naples, for instance, will allow you to make the most of both towns.

Naples in November is a great place to enjoy sightseeing, eat / learn to make the famous Neapolitan pizza and get a taste of Christmas, with famous nativity scene figurine artisans of Via San Gregorio Armeno gearing up for the season.

Puglia in November

Puglia is one of my favorite destinations in Italy in November.

Locorotondo Puglia Italy

On a good year, you will be able to enjoy long days out and still wear summer clothing here, without the scorching heat of the summer.

Wonderful places to visit in Puglia at this time are

  • Martina Franca
  • Alberobello
  • Locorotondo
  • Castel del Monte

You can see them all with a short road trip: you can find our 3 day Puglia itinerary here.

November can be a good month to visit Sicily.

Syracuse Sicily duomo

Outside of the busy summer time, in November you will be able to visit Sicily’s stunning archaeological sites without melting in its torrid sun and you will still be able to enjoy beautiful sea views.

This is a good time for cultural tourism in Sicily rather than and sea and sun vacation since high temperatures, especially towards the end of the month, are not always guaranteed.

Places we love in Sicily are:

  • Scopello and Segesta
  • Noto Valley

You can find here >>> a Sicily itinerary we loved

Other places you may want to visit in Italy in November

Dolomites – November can be a good time to visit the Dolomites, depending on your plans.

In terms of weather, is not a great time to visit this area: in November, the season is too advanced for most hiking and not quite advanced enough for skiing.

While you can still get lovely sights of the beautiful landscape here, a summer or winter trip here is better

However, many towns open their Christmas markets at the end of the month and they are among the best Christmas markets in Italy so if you are in the mood for German-Style Christmas, this can be a good destination!

Christmas market Bolzano

Cinque Terre – similar to the above, Cinque Terre is not at its best in November, especially towards the end of the month when tourism businesses are closed for the season.

The weather is usually too cold for swimming and rain is frequent: if coming at this time, check carefully the conditions of the path before venturing up. Find here >>> our guide to the best towns in Cinque Terre .

November in Italy is hit-and-miss with kids.

Older kids who can enjoy museums and sightseeing will have no problems but little ones who may want days at the park and possibly the beach may be disappointed.

No matter how south you go, November is not swimming weather so pool and beach time won’t be possible (you can still visit beaches but not for swimming)

Destinations I feel work well with kids at this time are:

Florence – always lovely with children but way too hot in summer.

Venice – blissfully devoid of mosquitoes, hungry and annoying in summer

Tuscany – October has the perfect temperature for hilltop town hopping

Rome – full of indoor and outdoor attractions for all ages

Pompeii – wonderful at this time, with lower crowds and without the scorching summer sun (wrap up though as it gets quite cold!)

Sicily – mild and beautiful perfect for family sightseeing and the occasional day on the beach (for sandcastles, not swimming)

Dolomites – pros and cons at this time (low crownds / many cable cars etc close for the season), but it can be a nice outdoor escape if you are in the area.

Lake Garda – depending on the weather, it can work as a wonderful short break for a weekend.

What to book in advance for spending November in Italy

November is not too busy in Italy but advance booking for all main attractions is recommended.

Attractions that need advance booking are:

  • Last Supper (Milan)
  • Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
  • Vatican Museums (Vatican City, Rome)
  • Colosseum (Rome)

Trains do not usually need to be booked in advance.

However, high-speed trains on popular routes such as Rome to Florence do tend to book out or only have very expensive tickets available last minute.

I recommend you book trains ahead of time if you are traveling on a budget or with kids: in this case, advance booking will guarantee having seats together.

The first of November, All Saints, is a National Holiday, a traditional long weekend for Italians. Book in advance if planning on traveling at that time.

Best Places to visit in Italy in November

best places to visit in italy november

November starts with All Saints’ Day and it’s a common habit to bring a bunch of chrysanthemums to the cemetery to celebrate the deceased members of the family. Another popular custom consists of eating and sharing the typical desserts of this feast that vary according to the different regions of the Country. Among the most popular ones, there is the “Bread of the Dead” in Lombardia (cookies made with dried fruits and cinnamon) and the “Wheat of the Dead” in Puglia (boiled wheat seasoned with cooked wine, chocolate, pomegranate, walnuts, and cinnamon).

In the Northern Regions, you’ll find some beautiful early winter landscapes creating an evocative atmosphere, especially in nature and close to water where a fine mist is very common. In the Southern Regions, you’ll probably find mild weather and a spring-like atmosphere instead.

Several fairs and food&wine events take place during this time of the year and you can easily bump into some international chefs and “food celebrities”!

November is the perfect month for tasting the best specialties of Italian gastronomy in a beautiful setting

What is the Weather Like in Italy in November

The weather is one of the main concerns when planning a trip to Italy in November. However, please keep in mind that Italy is a big country and differences in temperature and precipitation in the fall can be immense between Northern Italy or for example, Sicily or Sardinia. Not even to mention the mountains where winter comes early…

Furthermore, you cannot compare the weather in Italy at the beginning of November to that at the end of the month…

November is said to be Italy’s rainiest month. However, we only had two half days of rain out of two one-week trips to Italy in November…

The reality is that, unless you are booking your trip last minute, it’s impossible to say how the weather will be. November is a rather unpredictable month. In general, you should expect to get at least a few rainy days in Italy in November, and, normally, you’ll also need to pack some warm clothing and an umbrella or a rain jacket.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here is what the weather is like in different parts of Italy in November :

  • Rome: Temperatures 7-17°C (45-63 F). 9 days of (some) rain.
  • Milan or Venice: Temperatures 6-12°C (43-54 F). 6 days of (some) rain.
  • Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Sardinia: Temperatures 10-19°C (50-66 F). 7-9 days of (some) rain.

Good to know: There are about 9-10 hours of daylight in Italy in November, depending on where and when exactly you travel.

Portofino in Italy in November

Our experience

When we visited Cinque Terre and the Italian Riviera in the first week of November, we had some sunny warm days with daytime temperatures of 18-20 °C (65-68° F) and we could just wear t-shirts.

But in that same week, we also had a few rainy days when the temperatures were just around 12°C (54°F) and we needed a sweater and a rain jacket.

When I was in North Italy at the end of November, I was wearing a warm winter jacket and my UGG winter shoes… The weather was dry but cold with temperatures around 5-10°C (40-50°F). At the same time, it was raining quite hard in the other parts of Italy…

When we visited Rome in the first week of November, we had daytime temperatures of 18-20°C (65-68° F) and one day with lots of rain. The rest of the time – despite the rain in the forecast – it was really nice.

Beautiful fall weather in Cinque Terre at the end of October - beginning of November

November sees a rapidly decreasing number of visitors all over Italy. The more north you go, the fewer tourists you’ll see. But also in the south of Italy, November is the start of the low season.

Many European countries have school breaks in October – the first week of November. So some places, especially in southern Italy, will still be quite lively at the beginning of November. But if you visit Italy in the second week of November or later in the month, even the most popular places will be rather quiet.

That being said, the biggest cities in Italy are always popular. And so also in November, during the day, you’ll see tour buses and groups of tourists at the main attractions.

TIP: Visit the most popular landmarks just as they open. In the morning in November, you are likely to have them completely to yourselves. The cities also tend to be quite empty in the evening. Because it gets dark quite early in November, you can enjoy the beautifully-lit Italian cities without the crowds.

Milan canals in November

When we visited Italy at the beginning of November, the only busy place was Cinque Terre. It was nothing compared to what it’s like in the high season, but still, it was rather busy at some places (and some others were very quiet).

Most of the other towns nearby – Portovenere, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, or Lerici – were just pleasantly lively. Some smaller places like Camogli in that same region or Cernobbio (Lake Como) were really quiet.

When I was in Milan in the third week of November, the city was lively with locals, but there were very few tourists. We could even visit the terraces of Duomo without any queues whatsoever. The only place of all the main landmarks and attractions in Milan where you really have to reserve tickets long in advance is The Last Supper by da Vinci; this is also the case in the lower season.

Lake Como was completely deserted at the end of November. Como town itself was pleasantly lively because it’s a town where many people actually live. Whereas other places along the lake, including the world-famous Bellagio , were really quiet.

As we left, Como was preparing to open its yearly Christmas Market (starting from the last weekend of November). And also in Milan, they were about to light the Christmas decorations. So if you visit Italy in the last week of November, you’ll likely find a very nice Christmas atmosphere already.

Rome was quite busy in the first half of November as well, but mostly at the main sights in Rome . Most lesser-known places in Rome were quiet. And we also managed to visit the most popular places without the crowds by getting up earlier. The city was very quiet in the morning before 9-10 AM. But the better restaurants in Rome were always full at lunch as well as at dinnertime.

Bellagio in Italy in November

Is Everything Open in Italy in November?

As the weather cools down and gets wetter, more and more places in Italy start to close for the season in November. However, it really depends on the place.

Smaller towns that live from tourism, and especially coastal towns and villages all around Italy, go into winter sleep. Tours stop running, restaurants and shops close, and many hotels in tourist areas also close for the winter (November to March).

This is not the case in bigger cities, where most of the attractions, hotels, and restaurants remain open throughout the year. So if you are planning to travel to Italy in November, know that it’s a perfect time to visit the most popular towns such as Rome , Florence , Milan , Naples , or Venice .

Portovenere in Italy at the beginning of November

As we visited Cinque Terre , boat tours were supposed to be closed at the end of October already. However, because the weather was really nice, they just continued to run in the first few days of November as well.

We found plenty of restaurants open and there was still no sign of it being low season. It was the same in Portofino, where boat tours were still running (albeit not as frequently as in high season).

However, the smaller and less popular towns looked a lot more sleepy already. There were local restaurants open, but the more tourist-oriented places had already closed.

In Milan and Como , everything was open at the end of November. In the meantime, in Bellagio, pretty much everything was closed for the season. Most hotels had their wooden shutters closed and the town looked deserted. There was one gelateria open in town and a few local restaurants (excellent food!), but all the shops were closed.

In Rome, everything was open in November. Only the Vatican Museums were closed on the 1st of November (public holidays).

Where to Go in Italy in November

November is a great time to visit the most popular cities in Italy that are overcrowded in the high season. Rome , Milan , Florence , Venice , Naples , Bologna , Siena … – they have so much to offer in any season and in any weather. And there should always be at least a few days of dry sunny weather that will allow you to enjoy outdoor attractions as well!

Italian towns are just as enjoyable (if not more) in the cooler weather than they are in summer. Furthermore, if the weather is really bad, you can always visit some amazing museums, go to a concert, or have a really long lunch at a local restaurant… And when the weather is good, you can stroll the picturesque streets, beautiful parks, and maybe even take a tour to the countryside.

I loved Milan in November! Being able to explore this city without the crowds, completely changed my perception of what Milan is truly like. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Also Rome was great at this time of the year. Mild temperatures make sightseeing so much more enjoyable and you can do so much more than in the summer.

TIP: Even during the low season, it’s still advisable to book skip-the-line tickets for the most popular landmarks in the main cities. For example, the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican , the Colosseum in Rome , Doge’s Palace in Venice , or the Last Supper in Milan are popular the whole year.

Smaller Towns

If you like to get a feeling of the more authentic side of Italy, also consider visiting some smaller towns. Especially those that are extremely popular in summer but are very quiet in November. We absolutely loved Bellagio and Camogli in November. These places are just as picturesque as in other seasons, but having them all to yourself is simply magical!

Exploring the popular coastal towns or places like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast in the low season can be an unforgettable experience. The same for the most popular resorts along the Italian lakes. Also the best towns of Tuscany have a more local and authentic feel in the low season.

Although I haven’t been there in November, the Emilia Romagna Region and San Marino were both amazing at the end of September. I think these places would be just as enjoyable in November as well.

TIP: If you are planning to visit smaller towns in Italy in November, do some research upfront in order to make sure that you can actually do what you are planning to. Some attractions might be closed in November and there might be fewer transport connections, to mention just a few.

There are many places in Italy where you can admire autumn colors and enjoy what nature has to offer. Just keep in mind that it might be rainy. So it’s best to have a backup plan in case your nature adventure plans fall through.

November is probably not the best time to head to the mountains in the north of Italy. Most hiking trails are already inaccessible whereas the ski season hasn’t started yet.

On the other hand, some ski resorts might start operating in late November, and prices will be much lower than later in winter.

Events, Celebrations, and Christmas Markets

Fall is a popular time when many events and celebrations are held throughout Italy, also in November.

Depending on where you are traveling, take a look at the website of a local tourism board to see what there is to do in that area during your travel dates.

Many places in Italy have really nice Christmas markets and light shows and some of them already start in November.

Fewer tourists and lower demand mean that it’s much cheaper to visit Italy in November than in the high season. Flights are generally cheaper in the lower season and also hotel prices are generally lower.

This may not always be the case in big cities (where major events and business meetings can have a big influence on accommodation prices), but hotel prices in smaller towns of Italy are generally much lower this time of the year.

Public Holidays in Italy in November

There is just one nation-wide holiday in November in Italy and that’s the 1st of November, All Saints’ Day.

Most local businesses, banks, post offices, and big shops are closed on the first of November. However, we were in Italy on All Saint’s Day and didn’t notice much impact in the tourist areas. Souvenir shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions were open as usual. As already mentioned before, the only place that was closed on November 1 was the Vatican Museum.

The 2nd of November, All Souls Day, is not a national holiday, but it’s actually just as important. That’s the day when most people visit the graves of their late relatives and friends. Since most people actually have to work on this day, for practical reasons, they visit graveyards on All Saints Day instead.

Tips for Visiting Italy in November

  • Do some research to make sure that the places you want to visit are actually open . Keep in mind that many places might have shorter operating times than in high season. Some others might even be closed on certain days of the week.
  • Book skip-the-line tickets for the main landmarks and try to visit them first thing in the morning before tour groups arrive. We recommend booking tours and tickets via the GetYourGuide website . They have the biggest selection of tickets and tours and the best customer service with the most flexible cancelation policy.
  • Plan to visit indoor places (museums, churches, etc), but keep your plans somewhat flexible so that you can take advantage of the nice weather as well.
  • If you are planning to visit smaller towns , try to visit at the beginning of November. The chances of places being open are much higher in the first week of November than at the end of the month.
  • If you are on a tighter budget , plan to visit in the second half of November. The prices are even lower than at the beginning of the month.
  • If you are visiting big cities, see if you can get tickets for an opera performance or a concert . It’s a great advantage of visiting Italy in November – there are so many events!
  • Join a local food tour! Food and wine tours or local cooking classes are perfect for the cold and dark season! No trip to Italy is complete without this!
  • Prepare for all kinds of weather and always pack a rain jacket or a small travel umbrella .
  • Wear comfortable waterproof shoes .

Is It a Good Idea to Visit Italy in November – Conclusion

November is a great time to travel to Italy, and especially to the big cities like Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, or Naples. It’s also a wonderful time to visit the main landmarks and cultural attractions that Italy is famous for and actually be able to enjoy and truly appreciate them.

Just imagine strolling the maze of narrow streets and canals of Venice without the crowds, and then compare that to the craziness of the high season when tens of thousands of cruise ships passengers flood the city…

Also the smaller towns of Italy are amazing this time of the year! It’s the time when you can mingle among the locals, savor seasonal produce, visit museums without the crowds, and enjoy stunning coastlines and empty beaches with a dreamy off-season atmosphere.

With fewer tourists than during most other months, November is actually one of the best times of the year to experience the more authentic side of Italy.

Thank you so much for writing about Italy in November. My daughter lives in Florence and we spent the week of Thanksgiving there last year. My husband and son would like to do the trip again this year, but I want to see other places while there. We've been to Italy numerous times. Are boats running in Como during the 3rd week of November? Would love to see Cinque Terre too but maybe not the best time. Also, any good suggestions of where to go in Europe during Christmas? Thank you!

Thursday 19th of October 2023

@Jurga, Thank you Jurga. Yes we've been to Florence too many times. Because my daughter lives there and because this is the only time my son can take a vacation, traveling during this time frame is difficult for a family trip. I was looking to keep Florence as a base and travel around because I'm getting tired of always going to Florence. I know that sounds awful but it's the truth. So in 2024, my husband is going to take me to all the places in Italy I have never seen, like Cinque Terre, Portofino and may up to France, (Provence). I will look at your suggestions for Florence. I think we've done it all though. Love your blog and read about Bologna. That looks like an interesting city.

Wednesday 18th of October 2023

@Jurga, Thank you for getting back to me. I should know better since my family lived in Como. I guess we can make Florence our home base and travel to Venice, Bologna or Siena or maybe even Montepulciano. Lucca is close by or maybe a lunch on a vineyard in Chianti. Last year we rented a car and drove to Pienza. It was a gorgeous day in late November. On my bucket list for 2024 is to come to Belgium. I'd love to see Bruges! I hear it's beautiful.

Hi Kathryn, there are boats on Lake Como the whole year round, but they run on a rather limited schedule in the low season. For the rest, it really depends on the weather. Both - Lake Como and Cinque Terre - aren't really the best off-season destinations, but if you have dry weather and don't mind that some restaurants are closed, it can be a very enjoyable visit without the usual crowds. As for suggestions for Christmas, everywhere can be nice depending on what you are looking for. For beaches and sunshine, check out the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, etc.). For Christmas Markets, Belgium, France, Germany (most close before 25/12, but here in Belgium they remain open throughout the holidays). For sightseeing, Spain and Portugal can also be very nice at that time of the year. For skiing, the highest resorts in the Alps (at the lower altitudes, you risk of not having enough snow in December). Hope this helps.

@Kenzie, hi there, so curious how you packed for end of November, considering just a carry on for 2 weeks, is it possible with heavier warmer clothing? we are from Alberta Canada so not scared of cooler weather lol , we are heading there nov 23 this year , any advise would be awesome !

Monday 16th of May 2022

Glad to help. Good luck with the planning and enjoy your honeymoon in Italy!

Wednesday 24th of February 2021

Awesome Article... Loved it. This is extremely helpful since I am planning for an October end-November 1st week trip. If possible can you please let me know if a motorbiking trip is alright in the 1st week of November? I have been struggling to get an answer for that...

Thanks you in advance :)

Friday 26th of February 2021

Hi Meher, everything is possible, but so much depends on the weather you get and the places you visit. We had some amazing weather in Italy in November that would be perfect with a motorbike as well, but that is not guaranteed. Some areas (Dolomites, Trentino) will probably have snow already. But if you do some more research as to where to go (and go more to the south), it should definitely be possible. Once again, nobody can predict the weather, however. So maybe build in some flexibility in your itinerary just in case. All the best!

4 reasons to visit Italy in November

  • Smaller crowds. This is one big reason to visit Italy in November. After the huge crowds and lines of the summer months, Italy experiences a lower tourist season. While tourism in Italy is never non-existent, November is one of the very lowest seasons. This is why if you are one of the few lucky ones, this is the right time to face the major landmarks with usually overwhelming queues.
  • Cheaper rates. International flights to Italy are usually cheaper when it’s low season, and so are the domestic flights between regions. In Italy, there is an extensive train network run by Trenitalia and Italo Treno. They often do offers and promotions, especially in lower seasons like fall. Apart from the transportation, in November you will also find slightly cheaper hotel rates.
  • Beautiful colors . Falling leaves and seasonal skies make the autumn light warm and romantic. Wherever you travel in Italy in November, you will experience suggestive views and foliage mixed with yellow, brown, and orange hues in just about all Italian regions . This is why photographers or Instagram enthusiasts will love Italy
  • Local foods. Every region has its own local dishes, and often, Italian foods can be a bit heavy, such as Roman specialties like coda alla vaccinara oxtail or bucatini amatriciana, Florence’s local dishes like Florentine steak, or the canederli from the Trentino-Alto Adige tradition.

Pros and cons of traveling to Italy in November

Is November a good time to travel to Italy? If you are wondering whether November is a good month for you to plan your trip to Italy, our pros and cons will help you make up your mind.

  • Cheaper prices. The fact that several services are cheaper in November allows you to either go for a sweet upgrade to your hotel room or stretch your holiday further. If you have planned a week’s vacation, you can stretch it a bit and treat yourself to 10 days in Italy or even longer.
  • Quiet. With the landmarks not overflowing with visitors, your sightseeing can be calmer. There won’t be the need to rush, you can enjoy some slow travel, you can devote more time to exploring historical sites and museums, and in general, you can enjoy the destination at your own pace.
  • More relaxed. Let’s face it, we all love summer, but the heat and the crowds make you rush and force you into frantic planning lest you miss some scheduled entrance. If lines are shorter, you might decide last minute whether you want to visit a place or not, unless you know you really want to. If crowds are smaller, there is no rush and no stress when sightseeing.
  • The weather. I like storms, thunders, and rain, but I’m aware that they are not ideal if you are traveling. However, if there is a thunderstorm in November it’s most likely at night and during the day only some rain. And in Italy, there are plenty of things to do if it rains (think of food and museums!).
  • Shorter days. Between the time change and winter approaching, daylight hours in November are shorter than the previous months so you might have little inspiration for sightseeing. However, this is when you can enjoy big cities as well as smaller towns, with buildings and famous landmarks lit up for the night.

Holidays in November in Italy

Sort of underrated between two big seasons, the summer one finished not long before and the Christmas time is fast approaching, November doesn’t have many holidays. There are mainly two special days and they both are at the beginning of the month, the 1st and the 2nd of November.

  • November 1st. This is All Saint’s Day and it’s a holiday. This means that schools and offices are closed, as also shops in residential and non-touristy neighborhoods. In tourist areas, however, shops and restaurants will be open, as well as large shopping malls even if in the suburbs.
  • November 2nd. This is the day of the dead and it’s not a holiday. Schools are open unless it’s in between the holiday and the weekend, such as on a Friday. In this case, we do “ponte”, bridge, meaning, we connect all the days and it becomes a little 4-day break.

How long are the days in November in Italy?

Depending on the region and whether it’s the beginning or the end of the month, the duration of daylight in November in Italy varies. On average, a day lasts between 9 to 10 hours.

  • In Rome, we go from 10 hours and 25 minutes of daylight on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.39 am and sunset at 5.04 pm, to 9 hours and 23 minutes on November 30th, when the sun rises at 7.14 am and sets at 4.37 pm.
  • In Venice, we go from 10 hours and 12 minutes of daylight on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.47 am and sunset at 4.59 pm, to 9 hours and 2 minutes on November 30th, when the sun rises at 7.26 am and sets at 4.26 pm.
  • In Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige, the daylight lasts 10 hours and 8 minutes on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.53 am and sunset at 5.01 pm. On November 30th, we have 8 hours and 56 minutes of light, with dawn starting at 7.34 am and sunset at 4.30 pm.
  • In Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, we go from 10 hours and 16 minutes of daylight on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.49 am and sunset at 5.05 pm, to 9 hours and 9 minutes on November 30th, when the sun rises at 7.27 am and sets at 4.36 pm.
  • In Palermo, Sicily, the daylight lasts 10 hours and 38 minutes on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.30 am and sunset at 5.08 pm. On November 30th, we have 9 hours and 45 minutes of light, with dawn starting at 7.01 am and sunset at 4.46 pm.
  • In Cagliari, Sardinia, on November 1st the day is 10 hours and 35 minutes long with dawn being at 6.49 am and dusk at 5.24 pm. On November 30th, the daylight lasts 9 hours and 40 minutes as the sun rises at 7.21 am and sets at 5.01 pm.
  • In Bari, Puglia, the daylight lasts 10 hours and 28 minutes on November 1st, when the dawn is at 6.21 am and sunset at 4.49 pm. On November 30th, we have 9 hours and 29 minutes of light, with dawn starting at 6.55 am and sunset at 4.24 pm.

10 best places to visit in Italy in November

Rome in November is magical. It’s one of the lowest tourist seasons so crowds are very small and your experience inside each landmark, especially famous ones and the most popular Rome museums , will be of higher quality than in July and August. With fewer tourists and locals busy running their daily life, your experience in the city will certainly be an authentic one.

Photography enthusiasts will love the palette of golden, orange, and brown hues, and looking for a place to enjoy the foliage is one of the coolest things to do, both in the city and in the surrounding parks and towns.

Even though fall is in full swing, Rome in November is not very cold. Its temperatures range between 7°C (44°F) the lowest at night and 17°C (62/63°F) the highest during the day.

Apart from the fewer crowds, another big pro of visiting Rome this time of the year is the cheaper rates of both international flights and hotels. Due to being low travel season, also domestic flights and trains might have cheaper rates and more offers and promotions.

Trentino-Alto Adige

Immersed in nature, November is a great month to visit the Trentino-Alto Adige region if you are chasing foliage with golden hues and suggestive photography subjects.

The weather in Trentino is certainly colder than in Rome and towards the end of November, it starts snowing also at low altitudes. In fact, some ski resorts in Trentino Alto Adige’s Dolomites such as Madonna di Campiglio start opening around the 20th of November, many by the end of the month, and others at the beginning of December.

Trentino-Alto Adige is a fascinating region to visit in November also because of the Yuletide spirit all around. The Christmas markets start opening around the end of the month and street lights, snow, and the smell of mulled wine (vin brulé) do the rest.

Some of the best bigger cities to visit in Trentino-Alto Adige in November are Trento , Bolzano , Merano, and Bressanone.

In November, Florence’s weather starts to get chilly, albeit not as much as in northern Italy. Like Rome, Florence, too, experiences probably the lowest tourist season of the year, so if you are one of the few visitors, enjoy its beautiful landmarks without crowds.

While it might be too cold to have gelato, there are many delicious foods to try in Florence in November. This is the time of the new cold-pressed olive oil and white truffles. With the cold season approaching, this is a perfect time to tuck into the hearty local specialties that in summer might result too heavy to digest.

With cheaper rates, you might even be able to stretch your vacation further and instead of two days in Florence , you can stay four or five, or even a week if you can afford some time off!

Is Venice nice in November? Well, being November a rather wet month compared to the rest of the year, you need to put that into account especially visiting Venice. Venice is in general very humid, also in summer, so in November humidity will be up to the roof.

However, taking all the due precautions, if you are planning your trip to Italy for November, it might sound like a pity not to include Venice at a time when the usual huge crowds are much smaller. The only time in November when Venice might have more tourists is at the beginning around the 1st and the 2nd, All Saints and the Day of the Dead.

This is a great time to visit the islands around Venice like Burano, Torcello, and Murano, as well as more popular tourist attractions such as Ponte di Rialto and Ponte dei Sospiri bridges, Canal Grande, and Palazzo Ducale.

Venice in November can get quite foggy, adding to the mystery of an already utterly romantic city. The typical Venetian occurrence of the high waters, especially in low-level zones like Piazza San Marco, completes the scene of a magical city.

Even though Naples’ weather in November is quite mild, it can be unpredictable like in any other region of Italy. Truth be said, Naples is a fantastic destination all year long. With delicious local food, a rich culture, and a long and stormy history, you are sure to have a great trip.

Some of the things to do in Naples are a stroll around the central and quaint Spaccanapoli and the scenic seafront. If it’s raining, but also if it isn’t, don’t miss wonderful sights like the marble sculpture of the Veiled Christ, the amazing Palazzo Reale (royal palace), the majestic Maschio Angioino castle, and the rich collection of vestiges in the National Archaeological Museum.

While in Naples, check the weather forecast and if it’s not raining, make your way to Pompeii. With the summer heat long gone, walking through the alley of the ancient Roman city is a pleasure.

Of course, being Naples, I recommend tucking into the local dishes because they are amazing and pizza is really only one of the many.

Temperatures range between 10°C/50°F (the lowest) and 18°C/65°F (the highest) on average. Even though not much, it rains in Naples too. The rainy days in Naples in November are estimated for an average of 7 to 9 days.

We love Turin . With so many things to see and do, it’s always a good time to visit the capital of Piedmont. If it rains, you can spend a good couple of hours inside Museo Egizio, the Egyptian Museum displaying a rich collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, mummies, decorations, and all types of objects.

Turin is not famous for its friendly weather. This is why it features several porticoes and covered galleries. This is a royal city, the former home of the Savoy royal family, and the porticoes had mainly the purpose to protect the member of the aristocracy from the rain.

Temperatures are quite chilly in Turin in November, so wearing layers and a coat is recommended.

Trendy stores, fancy galleries, cool aperitif places, and countless clothes windows are what to expect in Milan in every season, and fall is not an exception. Take a tour of the gorgeous Duomo, see Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper, visit the Sforzesco Castle, and explore the Pinacoteca di Brera museum if the weather doesn’t inspire you to walk.

If temperatures are not hostile and it’s not raining, join the local fashionistas in the city’s shopping streets and sip on a drink in the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.

Check out our tips if you have only one day in Milan .

Bologna is a great destination to visit in Italy in November. A lively and vibrant city full of activities, landmarks, and things to do, Bologna doesn’t let its visitors down even in November.

Between October and November, you can attend some of the concerts as part of the annual Bologna Jazz Festival, or walk around the city center and visit its main attractions.

Your children will love a stop at the FICO Park , where they can take part in many food-themed activities, workshops, and, obviously, play in the rich playground. Usually, at the beginning of November, they organize Halloween-themed samplings, shows, and activities. Adults will definitely enjoy their time sampling local delicacies.

The weather in Bologna will likely feature some fog and especially in the mornings and evenings, temperatures will be pretty chilly. Rain is possible as the month has on average an estimated 6 to 7 days of rainfall, but it will hardly be a factor that will ruin your holiday.

Check out our article about the best things to do in Bologna .

If you want to enjoy the typical November perks of cheaper prices and smaller crowds but still want nice weather, Sicily is your best destination. Charming cities like Palermo, the most Arab city of Italy, for its museums and churches, Catania for its beautiful architecture, markets, and churches, Taormina and Ragusa for the gorgeous views, and Agrigento for its museums and the nearby Valle dei Templi.

All year long, Sicily is a great destination for its food, and November makes no exception. Sweets like the creamy cannoli and seafood pasta are only some of the local specialties you will enjoy on your Sicily trip. All around the island, you will find plenty of occasions to attend a sagra , local food fairs focusing on a single ingredient or preparation such as sausage or chestnuts.

Blessed by a mild Mediterranean climate, the weather in Sicily in November is still pretty unpredictable but temperatures are 15°C/60°F on average with the lowest being around 8°C/46°F and the highest touching peaks of even 20°C/68°F.

Even though Sardinia is mainly known for its beaches, the island is very rich in traditions, and the inland is as interesting, if not more, as the coastline.

Like in the rest of the country, the beginning of November in Sardinia is marked by All Saints’ Day and the Day of the Dead. Unlike other regions, however, the day of the dead is very much felt.

In some towns of the island, such as Sedilo in the Oristano province, families set up the table on the night of November 1st with cooked food for their dead. The food usually consisted of spaghetti and wine, then pictures of the dead, and sometimes also candles.

All over the island, on this occasion, they prepare a specific sweet known as “pabassini” or “papassini” depending on the area.

The weather in November in Sardinia changes frequently and suddenly.

Central and southern provinces like Oristano and Cagliari are quite warm, while northern cities like Olbia or Santa Teresa di Gallura might be slightly colder, but really 1 or 2 degrees of difference. Probably you will find a little chillier temperatures in the eastern Barbagia region in Nuoro province, in towns like Mamoiada and Orgosolo.

Even though not much of a swimming season, don’t miss the beachfront at least once: the rough sea is spectacular!

The capital of the wonderful Puglia region, Italy’s “heel”, Bari is a vibrant and fascinating city packed with historical sights and beautiful views. With less than a week of rainfalls and an average temperature of 16°C/61°F, Bari is a great place to visit in Italy in November because the weather is pleasant enough to walk for hours.

Apart from the landmarks inside the city, you can also take some day trips and head to places such as Polignano a Mare, Alberobello, and Castellana Grotte. The bravest will also swim in Puglia in November, but even if the weather can be quite warm, I don’t think the water will be.

Thermal springs

As the weather starts getting chilly, it’s very pleasant to soak in some thermal springs. From the natural springs of the Terme dei Papi in Viterbo to those in Tuscany such as Terme di Saturnia or Terme di Chianciano thermal baths, are a fantastic destination.

If you are going to northern Italy, in Merano there is a famous thermal park equipped with year-round spa facilities, saunas, pools, and a fitness center. Along with the beauty treatments, in Terme di Merano thermal park you can enjoy also brunch in the morning or aperitif in the evening.

Where NOT to go in Italy in November

Amalfi coast.

Is Amalfi warm in November? Yes and no. While its temperatures are not extremely cold (13°C/55°F to 18°C/65°F on average), this is when the rainy season starts in the area. Since the Amalfi Coast is famous mainly as a sea resort type of holiday, when it rains, there is not much to do.

On top of that, most hotels in both the Amalfi Coast and Positano are closed, so you would even have to resort to an accommodation that might not be ideal for your needs.

Cinque Terre

Similarly to the Amalfi Coast, also the Cinque Terre is not the most ideal Italian destination in November. The weather starts becoming chilly, the marine air makes it quite crispy, and rain is always possible.

The accommodation facilities and the summer activities are closed because the high season has just ended and this is the low season. So if you want to visit the Cinque Terre in November, my guess is to make it a day trip from another city that’s a better fall destination such as Genoa.

Make sure you plan your visit when it’s nice weather. The Cinque Terre is mainly a nature-focused trip and the main attraction is its beautiful scenery and great hiking paths, so you really don’t want to go on a rainy day.

Don’t miss our guide to visiting the Cinque Terre .

Tips + Need to know when traveling to Italy in November

As winter is approaching, there are a few tips and rules to keep in mind.

  • If you have decided to drive in Italy, keep in mind that from the 15th of November it’s mandatory to have winter tires or keep snow chains in the car. If you are renting a car in Italy upon arrival, it will be fully equipped according to the law.
  • Whenever you are coming, even if it’s at the beginning of the month, pack at least one change of warm winter clothes. November is quite unpredictable and you never know how you need to dress.
  • Some areas with a very low tourism season in November might slow down with their service offer. Check out the destination you are considering going to and see if hotels and restaurants are open as well as tourist landmarks.

What to wear in Italy in November

Are you unsure whether you plan your trip or not because you have no idea how you should dress in Italy in November? As the weather is erratic and can change a couple of times on the same day, remember that the secret is layering.

Here are some of my tips about what to wear in Italy in November.

  • Raincoat. Being November a pretty rainy month in Italy, a waterproof raincoat is usually a good solution to stay warm and protected from the rain. If you are wearing a warm jumper underneath and a few layers of clothing, your raincoat doesn’t even need to be padded.
  • Coat or jacket. Depending on where you are going, November in Italy requires either a coat or a jacket. If you are heading north, a coat is probably more recommended, while in southern regions or Sicily, a jacket will be enough, provided that you are wearing a jumper underneath.
  • Comfortable trousers or jeans. Since you are likely to spend most of the time sightseeing and walking, a pair of comfortable trousers are a must. Depending on what type of trip you are going to have, you will choose what trousers are a better fit. For big cities, a pair of jeans or smart cotton trousers will be fine. If you are going to trek in the mountain, you will probably prefer lightweight hiking trousers. In case of rain, waterproof trousers or overtrousers feel like a sound choice.
  • Jumper or sweatshirt. In November in Italy, a jumper is recommended. If you are in northern Italy, you are likely to keep it on, but if you are visiting southern Italy in November, you can take it off and remain in your cotton top especially midday or on unusually warm days that lately are happening always more often.
  • Long-sleeve tops. Excellent for layering, cotton long-sleeve tops are perfect to wear underneath your jumper that you can eventually take off if it’s too warm.
  • Short-sleeve tops. If you are traveling to southern Italy, let’s say from Rome southward, in November you can still use short-sleeve tops but mainly for layering rather than for a complete outfit. Summer is long gone and winter is approaching.
  • Ankle boots or sneakers. Due to the likely rainy weather forecast and the fact that we are in fall, shoe-wise, a pair of ankle boots is a good solution to avoid getting wet. If you know it’s not going to rain, in November in Italy you can also wear sneakers or maybe trekking shoes if you are going to one of the mountainous regions such as Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, or Valle d’Aosta.
  • Scarf. A scarf is an essential clothing item in November in Italy. It can be humid, chilly, and at times windy, so you might need protection for your neck and throat both during the day and in the evening/night.

What to pack for a trip to Italy in November

Apart from the clothes you will need, there are also some items you should pack if you are travel to Italy in the fall.

  • Umbrella. Wherever you decide to go and whatever the duration of your trip, packing an umbrella is a good idea. I recommend opting for a small, foldable umbrella so you can easily pack it in your luggage and carry it around in your backpack ready whenever needed.
  • Backpack. Whether you are traveling to big cities or planning a more nature-focused trip, a backpack comes in always handy. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that in many important landmarks such as the Colosseum it’s not allowed to enter with a backpack. Some landmarks will have a cloakroom, but not all. In case you can’t enter or leave it anywhere, a cross-body bag is a better choice.
  • Camera. Seriously, why would you come to Italy without a camera? Whether it’s a DSLR or a smartphone, you will want to capture the beautiful fall colors.
  • International driving license. If you are from outside the EU and want to rent a car in Italy, along with your country’s driving license, you will also need an international one. For citizens of the EU, their normal license is enough. Check out Discover Cars for the prices and to book .
  • Medicines. In Italian pharmacies, you can find every type of medicine, but if you are already taking some and you know they require a prescription, it’s always better to pack them in your luggage. In case of cold or flu, remedies like paracetamol, aspirin, vitamins, anti-inflammatories, and such, are over-the-counter medicines.

How cold is it in November in Italy?

The weather in November in Italy differs a lot depending on the region. While in southern regions wearing a jacket might be sufficient, in places like Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, and Trentino-Alto Adige, a coat will likely be more adequate.

The chance of rainfall is all over the country, but temperatures vary. If in Sicily the thermometer can reach 20°C/68°F, in Valle d’Aosta the average highest is 12°C/53°F.

In the northern regions like Valle d’Aosta and Trentino, the snow starts falling around the end of November and you can already see snow-capped peaks. Some snow can fall also on the peaks in other parts of Italy such as Mount Etna in Sicily or Roccaraso in Abruzzo, but usually to see snowflakes around Italy we need to wait until later months.

Is November a rainy month in Italy?

November is one of the rainiest months in Italy. The rainfalls are on average for a week. This means that even if it’s supposed to rain, it doesn’t mean that it will for the whole day. Sometimes, actually often, it will rain at night and the result will be a crispy morning.

If it rains during the day, you might have some showers, a couple of hours when it lasts longer, but hardly a whole day. With so many important museums , coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants, and historic sites, you will find plenty of things to do even if it rains.

Italy in November: tips, weather, and 5 best places to visit

November is one of the quietest months in Italy: tourism is on pause before the beginning of the Holiday season, the weather is quite moody, and there are no major national festivities. However, there are still several reasons why visiting Italy in November could be a great idea.

Here are all the tips and the best places to make the most of your trip to Italy in November.

Visiting Italy in November

Visiting Italy in November is not f or everyone : the weather starts to get seriously cold, the days are quite short, and there are no major events on the calendar. However, if you are willing to put yourself on the line, you will quickly learn that a trip to Italy during the second to last month of the year is full of unexpected advantages .

First of all, November is right in the middle between the shoulder season and the Holiday period. This means that the crowds are significantly smaller, and the same goes for the prices of flights and accommodations (on average, the lowest of the year).

In addition, the colder weather and the shorter days make for a great excuse to do more of the indoor activities you have always put off. Plus, who doesn’t like a nice cup of Italian hot chocolate and a slice of torta di mele (“apple cake”) on a rainy day?

If all of this has sparked your curiosity, we bet you won’t regret booking your next trip to Italy in November!

Weather in Italy in November

The best adjective to describe the weather in Italy in November is moody. Indeed, this is one of the rainiest months of the year , with a monthly average of around 101 mm. However, you don’t need to worry too much about this: on average, there are only 8-9 days of rain during the month. This means that when it actually rains, it rains pretty hard!

Another characteristic feature of the weather in Italy in November is the mist, especially in the first and last hours of the day, which adds to the cozy atmosphere typical of this time of the year.

When it comes to the average temperatures, these generally range between 3°C to 14°C (37°F – 59°C) , with the minimum ones dropping even lower towards the end of the month. Therefore, don’t forget to take a raincoat and a padded jacket with you if want to have a pleasant trip to Italy in November.

italy in november

If so far we have talked about the negative sides of the weather in Italy in November, we should also mention that some days can be quite warm and sunny as well. This is especially true in the southern part of the peninsula, where temperatures can hit up to 20°C (68°F).

The days around the 11th of November are known as the Estate di San Martino (“ Summer of Saint Martin ”). What this means is that after the first colds at the beginning of the month, the weather becomes warmer and sunnier for a couple of days, to the point that you might even be tempted to hit the beach. Unfortunately, these particularly favorable days do not last for long: l’estate di San Martino dura tre giorni ed un pochino (“it lasts for three days and a little bit”), as the popular saying goes.

Pros of visiting Italy in November

Even though November is rarely mentioned among the best months to visit the Belpaese , the pros of visiting Italy in November can be quite remarkable. All you need is an open mind and a fresher perspective!

Cons of visiting Italy in November

Unfortunately, there are also some cons to visiting Italy in November. The main ones are the following.

Events in November in Italy

November is not the most eventful month as far as Italian cultural and social life is concerned. The only national festivity is on the first of the month (All Saints’ Day) when all offices and schools are closed.

But don’t worry, as you might still be able to find some festivals and fairs that are certainly worth a visit. Examples are the Truffle Fair held in the city of San Miniato (close to Florence), and CioccolaTò , a festival dedicated to chocolate, organized in the city of Turin.

Ognissanti (1 November)

Ognissanti (All Saints’ Day) is the only official national festivity during the month. The day is generally spent attending the traditional Messa del Giorno dei Santi (catholic mess), having a lovely lunch with the family, and then visiting the cemetery to bring some flowers to deceased ones. If the day falls close to the weekend, most families have the so-called Ponte (‘the bridge’ to the weekend, in other words: a long weekend), where they usually plan outdoor trips to the countryside or the mountains. The next ‘Ponte’ is scheduled for 2025. Then November 1 will fall on a Friday.

Lucca Comics & Games

Between the end of October and the beginning of November, the city of Lucca (in Tuscany) becomes a paradise for all comics, video games, and cosplay lovers. Hundred of events, competitions, and games are organized all throughout the city for one of the biggest events of its kind.

The closure of the Biennale d’Arte di Venezia

The end of November coincides also with the closure of the Biennale d’Arte, the international art exposition that is held every two years (generally from May to November) in the city of Venice. Several talks and workshops are organized to celebrate the closure of the exhibition. The next Biennale , dedicated to architecture, runs from May 20, 2023 to November 26, 2023.

Early opening of Christmas markets

If you want to start breathing the authentic Spirito Natalizio (“Christmas atmosphere”), you are in the right place. In the last years, several Christmas markets have anticipated their openings at the end of November, in order to accommodate tourists’ requests. Among the Christmas Markets of Trento, Vipiteno (close to Bolzano), the German markets ( Weihnachtsmä r kte) of Florence, and the Habsburg markets organized in the city of Arco (nearby Trento).

Useful tips for November

If you have decided to book your next Italian trip during the month of November, the following tips will help you make the most out of it.

1. Be prepared for the colder days

The weather in Italy in November is generally quite cold and rainy. Therefore, if you don’t want to suffer while sightseeing, make sure to bring a padded jacket and a pair of heavy pants with you. If you are particularly sensitive to colder temperatures, a thermal shirt is highly suggested as well.

However, don’t forget that some days of the month might be quite warm and sunny as well. Be strategic and have a pair of sunglasses and some lighter activewear always with you!

2. Make the most out of the daylight hours

The days are getting shorter and shorter as the month progresses. This is why you have to play in advance and make the most out of the fewer hours of light of the day. Plan your outdoor activities in the first part of the day (but not too early, as the temperatures are at their lowest in the first hours of the morning). Leave the afternoon for those indoor activities you have always put off (such as museum tours, Italian cooking classes, or even a relaxing evening in a wellness center).

3. P lan your trip around the Estate di San Martino

The Estate di San Martino (Summer of Saint Martin) is that time of the month (generally around the 11th of the month) blessed with unusually sunny and warm weather. Plan your vacation during these days if you are into outdoor activities such as mountain hikes, or bike trips to the countryside.

4. Book your flight and accommodation in advance

Even though November can be generally considered “low season”, try to book your flight and accommodation in advance. Not only the choice is greater, but you will also be able to make the most out of discounts offered during this month by most flight companies and apartment rentals.

5. Be flexible, put prepared

The weather in November in Italy could be quite variable. Be flexible with your schedule, and make sure to include some indoor activities in your plans (having a list of the museums and indoor cultural sites in your areas might be quite useful as well). Be also prepared to change your plans from one moment to another, as sometimes rain can be quite unforeseeable. Just in case, always check weather forecasts in advance.

5 places to visit in November

November is the right time of the year if you want to visit some of those popular destinations that are either extremely crowded or extremely hot during the other months of the year. Here are the 5 best places to visit in November.

1. Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre are five ancient fishing villages (namely Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) located alongside a very suggestive and indented coastline. Each of them is characterized by colorful houses and vineyards clinging to steep terraces looking at the sea. The only downside to the Cinque Terre is that they are always crowded with tourists, especially during the Spring and Summer months.

This is why planning a trip there during the month of November could prove to be a very wise decision: the temperatures are not too cold nor too hot, the tourists are way fewer, and you won’t have any problem booking a table in one of the typical osterie (“ taverns”).

Merano is a gracious city in the heart of the Alps. Although the existence of this city might be ignored by many, this was the favorite holiday destination of the Habsburg Empress Sissi. Merano is appreciated for its beautiful natural surroundings, the richness of its buildings, and (perhaps above all) for its thermal areas.

italy-in-novembre

The Terme di Merano are indeed among the most renowned thermal areas in the country. What’s great about them is that you can swim outside even during the colder months, and admire the snowy mountains from one of the many hot tubs.

Naples is among the most vibrant, colorful, and lively cities in Italy. From Piazza del Plebiscito to Rione Sanità , the city exudes the true essence of “Italianity”. And let’s not forget that the city gave also birth to authentic Neapolitan pizza , the most loved food in the world.

Visiting Naples in November means being able to enjoy some pretty warm and sunny days, without the noise typical of busier months of the year.

November is surely not one of the most frequently recommended months to visit the Città del Gran Canale . However, if you dare to book your trip to Venice during this month, you will be awarded with some quite unique circumstances. First of all, the midst raising from the canals will create a ghostly atmosphere, while Piazza San Marco will look incredibly empty (ideal if you want to take some nice Instagram pictures). In addition, the line to go up the Campanile San Marco will be incredibly short.

italy-in-november

And don’t forget to take a trip to the nearby islands of Burano and Murano, famous for their artisanal glass production.

5. Lake Como

Lago di Como is only half an hour away from the hectic city of Milan, yet it is placed in an incredibly peaceful and pristine alpine area. The lake shores are surrounded by the small towns of Como, Bellagio, and Lecco, which are generally quite crowded during the Summer months.

This is why a November trip to Lake Como could be a great idea if you don’t mind the lower temperatures and the occasional wind. What’s even better is that during lower season months you might be able to book some of the luxurious villas overlooking the lake for super-discounted prices.

In conclusion…

Visiting Italy in November is not for everyone. The weather is cold and rainy, the days are shorter, and many outdoor activities are off-limits. However, the prices of flights and accommodations are generally lower, and the most popular tourist attractions are less crowded. If you are into a quieter and more intimate Italian trip, then the month of November could be the best choice for you.

best places to visit in italy november

November is a wonderful time to take  a vacation to Italy . Though the days are short and the weather is variable, Italy in November has few crowds, multiple festivals and events, the very best autumn cuisine, and gorgeous foliage. Plus, it’s the cheapest month to fly to this amazing boot-shaped country.

Most tourists will leave in  October  when the rainy days increase and the sun sets as early as 5 pm. However, sticking around into November is well worth it to give your budget a break. Airfare to and from Italy is the cheapest in November and most hotels and villas will be discounted. With cheaper travel costs, travelers can spend more on food and festivals – of which there are many in November.

Italian cuisine is full of wonderful comfort foods, but the autumn gastronomy is especially appealing. Harvests around the country take place from August to October, meaning November is the best month to  go on a cooking tour  and enjoy all the fresh produce of the season. During November, try ordering some handmade pasta with truffle oil or a pumpkin ravioli dish. And don’t forget to order a big glass of spicy red wine to warm you up from the chilly weather!

ITALY WEATHER IN NOVEMBER

The weather in November will be colder, wetter, and darker than the summer months. However, there’ll be a few days with sunshine and clear skies before winter comes into full swing. Since Italy is a long country that runs from north to south, there are varied weather patterns throughout the country. Southern Italy will always be much warmer than northern Italy, especially in the Alps or Dolomite mountain ranges.

Cities in northern Italy such as Turin,  Milan ,  Bologna , and  Venice  have average high temperatures of 52 degrees – chilly enough for a sweater and a coat. November will see anywhere from 65 to 80 millimetres of rainfall, so it’ll be best to wear a waterproof raincoat to resist both drizzle and fog. However, street vendors bring out their chestnut stands during November so warm up with freshly roasted chestnuts over an open fire as you walk around town. In addition, mulled wine becomes popular during the later weeks of the month, and is even available in to-go cups at winter markets – perfect to warm cold hands!

best places to visit in italy november

Central and southern Italian cities –  Florence , Pisa,  Rome , and Naples – have average high temperatures of 59 to 63 degrees. Rainfall in these cities reaches up to 150 millimetres, with less than a dozen sunny days during the month on average. Though it will still be best to pack a raincoat, many days will be pleasant enough to walk around outside. Plan to visit outdoor monuments such as the  Colosseum  or  Pompeii  on one of the rare sunny days for the most pleasant experience.

The warmest part of Italy during November will be in the southern islands of  Sicily  and Sardinia. Average high temperatures reach nearly 68 degrees with more than 15 sunny days during the month – warm enough for beach strolls and walks around town. However, even the islands experience increased rain, so no matter which region you visit on your vacation, it’s best to carry a small umbrella. Keep in mind that moving south for the winter is common in Italy so although there shouldn’t be crowds, the southern islands will have the most November visitors compared to other parts of Italy.

FESTIVALS/EVENTS IN ITALY IN NOVEMBER

Rome jazz festival.

The Rome Jazz Festival  is a weeklong celebration of jazz in the Auditorium Parco della Musica, normally held the first week of November. The annual festival is over 40 years old and has hosted an impressive array of Italian and foreign musicians including Gregory Porter and Dhafer Youssef Quartet. The line-up is always eclectic – perfect for every type of music lover.

If a whole week of jazz is too much for you, there are free jazz concerts at the Teatro di Villa Torlonia in Rome each Sunday in November.

Turin Film Festival

The Turin Film Festival  is held annually on the last weekend of November in Italy’s former capital city. It’s the second largest film festival in the country behind the Venice Film Fest, which takes place in August. As a prestigious event, it draws famous Italian actors and actresses to the city along with world-renowned directors and producers.

The 35-year-old festival has a number of international film screenings, preceded with introductions and wrapped up with question and answer sessions with fellow film enthusiasts. Don’t worry if you don’t speak much Italian – nearly every movie will have English subtitles to accommodate the international crowd.

Roma Europa Festival

Beginning in October but continuing into November is the popular  Roma Europa Festival . The multi-week celebration is less of a festival and more of a series of cultural happenings. The eclectic mix of events are scattered around Rome, so check the online schedule for details. Available experiences typically include contemporary dance shows, music concerts, live theatre, art installations, virtual reality demonstrations, and even web exhibits. The events are available for many price ranges ranging from free to nearly 50 euros.

Truffle Festivals

If you’ve never eaten a truffle, then book your next trip to Italy in November immediately. Not to be confused with the chocolate treat, truffles in Italy are a type of fungi, similar to a mushroom, that complement many Italian dishes. They have a slightly garlicky flavor with an earthy, musky scent and taste absolutely delicious in comfort foods.

In Alba, the International White Truffle Festival takes place from October to the first week of November. This is the largest truffle festival in the country and includes truffle education pamphlets, more tastings than you can imagine, and gourmet truffle dishes and wine pairings. For a true shock, take a peek at the price tags on some of the largest truffles for sale. They are not cheap!

A number of other truffle festivals occur in various cities around the country besides the large International White Truffle Festival. I n Tuscany , San Miniato’s White Truffle Festival takes place in the middle of November offering many of the same tastings and delicious food and wine pairings.

Feast of Saint Cecilia

Romans celebrate Saint Cecilia on November 22nd each year with a feast. Saint Cecilia is one of the Roman’s favorite Saints. She was said to be an upper-class woman who lived in the 3rd century. As the musicians played on her wedding day, she ‘sang in her heart to the Lord,’ making her the patroness of musicians.

In the 4th century, a church was constructed in her honor in the location of her previous home in Rome in the Trastevere neighborhood. A moveable statue of Saint Cecilia herself was constructed outside by Stefano Maderno in her remembrance. While November 22nd is celebrated by many sects of Catholicism, it’s a special treat to attend the feast of Saint Cecilia in Trastevere and to celebrate with her statue.

The Feast of Our Lady of Good Health

The Feast of Our Lady of Good Health takes place on November 21st at Basilica di Madonna Della Salute in Venice. As a celebration of Venice’s escape from the Bubonic plague in 1621, thousands of Italians gather to cross a bridge over the Grand Canal to the church. Although the church is no longer in active use, it is still used for this annual celebration.

After the procession, hundreds of people join in for a feast in St. Marc’s square. Although this celebration mostly consists of religious pilgrims, non-secular tourists are also welcome. It’s both a religious holiday and a celebration of a historical year for Venice. For a truly unique experience, hire a private gondola to witness the bridge crossing.

Oberdrauburg Christmas Market

The last weekend of November, the Oberdrauburg Christmas Market opens up in Signa – 15 minutes outside of Florence. This market is just one of many Christmas markets all over Italy that open in winter, though it does begin the earliest. If you didn’t already guess by the name, this is a German-inspired market complete with the traditional mulled ‘vin brulè’ wine, string puppets, and delicious treccia mochèna cake.

A cold evening is the perfect time to take a stroll through the Tuscan Christmas market. Pick up delicious treats and warm drinks while you ogle over the incredibly detailed nativity scenes that local Italians pride themselves on. As a bonus, this is a perfect time to shop for souvenirs and Christmas gifts to bring your loved ones back home! You can find out more about  our Christmas vacations here .

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS IN NOVEMBER

All soul’s day.

Though not a public holiday, All Souls’ Day is celebrated throughout Italy the day after All Saints’ Day, on November 2nd. Called Giorno dei Morti in Italian, the holiday is meant to honor each family’s dead ancestors. Families typically visit the cemetery again to clean, polish, and decorate the gravestones of their passed loved ones. Chrysanthemums are the Italian flower for the dead, so expect to see the orange flowers all over local graveyards.

Since the holiday is not a day off work or school, All Souls’ Day celebrations are typically toned down compared to All Saints’ Day. After visiting their deceased loved ones, families typically enjoy leftovers from the previous day’s feasts or a simpler meal.

All Saints’ Day

All Saints’ Day is one of Italy’s 12 national public holidays. In Italian, the day is called Ognissanti or Tutti i Santi and is celebrated on November 1st each year. As is clear by the name, the holiday celebrates all of the saints.

Since November 1st is a public holiday, Italians do not go to school or work and spend the whole day celebrating. Traditionally, they attend mass, then visit their nearest cemetery to honor the dead. Sometimes mass is held at the cemetery and other times, it’s held in the church and the procession walks together to the cemetery where the priests bless the dead saints.

Food also plays an important role in the celebration of this holiday. Each region of Italy has their own distinctive food specialties so their traditional meals vary. However, most regions feast on some type of soup to combat the cold weather and freshly made dark bread.

TIPS FOR VISITING ITALY IN NOVEMBER

  • Since November is low season for tourists, many tours, churches, museums, and monuments will have modified times of operation. Call or email ahead to ensure you know the correct hours.
  • Instead of packing a bulky umbrella on your flight, ask to borrow one from the concierge at your hotel. They often have them on loan for visitors walking around in the off-season.
  • If you’re on a budget, plan your trip for late November for even cheaper airfare and hotel prices.
  • Pack layers to be prepared for a variety of weather. Lightweight materials such as wool will keep you warm and can be easily removed and stored in a backpack when the sun shines.
  • With the variable weather, focus your itinerary on indoor items or be flexible with your plans.
  • To embrace the approaching winter, plan your vacation in the Alps or the Dolomites and enjoy a number of snow sports!
  • Some tourist destinations are only open on weekends during low season, so schedule your vacation to spend as many weekends in Italy as possible.

BOOK YOUR NOVEMBER ITALIAN VACATION

If you factor in the lack of crowds, the exquisite seasonal cuisine, and the number of cultural events, November is truly a wonderful time to take a vacation in Italy. With so few tourists, autumn is one of the few times a visitor can get a feel for authentic Italian life.

For example,  Venice  in the summertime can be crowded and hot, leaving very little space to explore or enjoy the unique canal city. However, visit during November and you will see a nearly deserted floating city. The fog and rain will add to the mysterious allure of the canals and give you a perfect atmosphere to view museums and explore the city.

Naples, in Southern Italy, offers the mildest weather with temperatures reaching up to 19°C (66°F).

Despite the rain and cooler temperatures, November in Italy has its own charm. The colorful autumn foliage creates a beautiful backdrop for exploring the cities and enjoying indoor attractions. Be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience in Italy.

Holidays and Festivals in November

In November, Italy celebrates several holidays and festivals that offer a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural traditions. One of the significant holidays is All Saints Day, also known as Ognissanti, which falls on November 1st. It is a national holiday, and Italians typically attend mass, enjoy a long family lunch, and visit the cemetery to pay respects to their loved ones.

Another notable observance is All Souls Day, or Giorno dei Morti, on November 2nd. Although not a national holiday, it is a day when many Italians visit gravesites to honor and remember their deceased family members. It is customary to leave flowers and pay tribute to the departed.

During these holidays, it’s important to note that some places may have limited hours or closures. Being aware of this can help you plan your itinerary to ensure you make the most of your time in Italy. Additionally, immersing yourself in the local customs and participating in these traditional observances can provide a deeper understanding of Italian culture.

“The holidays and festivals in November offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in Italian traditions and gain a deeper appreciation for the country’s rich cultural heritage.” – Local Cultural Expert

Cultural Insight: All Saints Day Traditions

All Saints Day, known as Ognissanti in Italy, is a time for honoring saints and departed loved ones. Beyond the religious observances, Italians have unique traditions associated with this holiday. One popular custom is the preparation and consumption of special sweet treats, such as ossa dei morti (bones of the dead), which are almond-flavored cookies shaped like bones. These cookies are typically enjoyed with a glass of wine or a cup of espresso.

  • Italian families often gather for a festive meal on All Saints Day, where traditional dishes like roasted chestnuts, pumpkin soup, and panettone are served.
  • Visiting cemeteries is a significant part of the day, with families adorning gravesites with flowers and lighting candles to honor their loved ones.
  • In some regions of Italy, there are processions and parades that take place, bringing together locals and tourists alike to witness the vibrant displays of costumes and traditional music.

These cultural insights and traditions make November an incredibly enriching time to experience the vibrant tapestry of Italian life and create lasting memories.

Italy in November: Where to Go and What to Do

While you might see Italy as a summer destination, November can be the best time of year to visit if you are looking to escape the crowds and avoid the heat.

Italy’s high season runs through the busy European summer from May to September. During this period, the weather is scorching hot and nationalities from across the world flock here on their summer holidays.

In summer, you’ll spend hours queuing to get into the Colosseum in Rome, and you’ll be jostling crowds in the streets of Venice while trying not to get sunburned. Even in the shoulder season, you’ll be amongst the crowds. But in November, Italy is positively quiet.

The weather might not be as good, but it’s a great time to explore the country’s best sights and attractions, with few other tourists around to get in the way of your photos!

The Weather in Italy in November

The primary reason why Italy isn’t such a popular travel destination in November is because the weather isn’t quite as glorious as at some other times of the year. This isn’t the coldest month of the year by any stretch – that’s yet to come – but the country does experience its highest levels of rainfall.

So pack a raincoat, because wherever you are in the country you might run into a few storms or heavy showers during your stay. But don’t worry too much. The rain never lasts too long, because this is the Mediterranean and the climate here is still remarkably dry.

Temperatures in November vary across the country. The further north you are, then the colder it’s going to be. Northern Italy can be verging on freezing, as temperatures can drop almost to zero in places such as Milan.

In the mountains, destinations such as the Dolomites are already well below freezing at night, given the higher altitude. In mountainous regions, snow begins to fall in November, but you can’t expect skiing to really begin until December, so many of these places are off-limits this month.

In central Italy, temperatures are much more pleasant with the oppressive heat of summer replaced by cool, calm climes. Yes, it will probably rain in cities such as Rome or Pisa, but you can expect highs in the day of 15-17 degrees Celsius.

If you’re coming from anywhere further north, then this is positively hot.

Head further south and the Mediterranean climate is very much still on show. In Sicily you can enjoy temperatures that rise well into the 20s during the day. The sun still shines and you can hit the beaches, while scoring great deals on resorts and flights too.

Where to Go in Italy in November

No other city in the world has such enthralling layers of history and culture as the Italian capital, Rome. And November is a great time to visit.

You’ll have none of the crowds of summer, but all of the incredible attractions are very much open for business. Visit the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, and stroll at your own pace through the Roman Forum and the Roman Colosseum .

You can enjoy great restaurants and, if you have a nice, dry evening, you can even enjoy al fresco dining on the ancient streets of Rome.

Visiting Rome in the off-season also means that you’ll get better deals on central accommodation options, like Il Monastero Collection and Casa Montani .

Turin is one of Italy’s most underrated cities. It never sees the crowds of places like Rome or Venice, even in high season.

November is the best time to visit what was once the Italian capital because this is when the iconic Turin Film Festival is held. It’s a lively time to be in town.

This is the heart of the Piedmont Region in the north, and you’ll also find that there are countless food festivals celebrating the harvests in November.

Turin is a great place to stay in Italy if you want to spend your time in historic accommodation, such as Casa del Pignone and 18 Alfieri .

While it might be cold in Milan, it’s still a good time to visit the northern city if you want to experience this iconic destination without the crowds.

Make sure you’ve got warm clothes, because temperatures drop drastically at night, but rest assured you can climb the tower of the Duomo for autumnal views and not worry about the length of the line.

If you’re staying in Milan in November, it’s a great opportunity to check into the contemporary city’s best hotels, like Park Hyatt Milano and Casa Baglioni Milan .

Florence was the heart of Italy’s Renaissance, and the historic city is well known for its beautiful architecture and excellent museums.

This is one of Italy’s top tourist destinations, so there’s no better time to visit than November if you want to have the city (almost) to yourself. If it’s the history and art you’re interested in, then November is perfect too, because you can spend most of your days in galleries and exhibitions.

To keep close to the top attractions in Florence you’ll want to stay somewhere central, like the Eco Urban B&B or the Domus Plaza which offers views of the famous Duomo.

Like Rome and Florence, Venice is one of the most popular cities in Italy. In fact, with its iconic canals and fascinating history, Venice has grown to become one of the most visited cities in the world.

In summer, you can’t move for people and the price of everything goes up exponentially. In November on the other hand, there’s barely a soul in sight in comparison to the high season, and it’s a much more enjoyable place to be, even if the sun isn’t shining.

To enjoy Venice like a local, self-catering accommodation is a great option, such as the Residence Poli Venezia or Polo’s Treasures .

Sicily is Italy’s largest island, and it’s a Mediterranean paradise for those looking for some end-of-year sunshine in Europe.

The island is known for its sun-drenched beaches and warm waters. While there’s less sun and the water is colder in November, it’s still a beautiful place to visit. The real bonus is the fact that you can score wonderfully cheap deals on beachfront Sicilian villas .

Of course, there’s so much more to Sicily than its beaches. You can use November as an opportunity to go hiking in the cooler weather and explore the many ancient ruins that are dotted across the island.

What to Do in Italy in November

November is arguably one of the least popular times of the year to be in Italy. But for those who venture here, it’s the best time to visit the country’s famed museums. In summer, and even in the shoulder seasons, you’ll find enormous queues at many of the most famous museums in Italy.

In every city and in particular in the most touristy places, museums are always incredibly busy in peak season. In Florence, you can be waiting for hours to get inside the Uffizi Gallery , while in Milan there are endless waits for entrance to the best sights.

In November, you miss all of this. There’s no need to buy fast-track tickets, plus when it rains, there’s no better place to seek shelter than inside a museum.

Roman Ruins

Equally, November is a great time to visit Italy’s wealth of Roman ruins. Like the museums, queues are likely to be much shorter and you won’t be jostling for the best pictures.

In Rome, you can explore the Colosseum at leisure , while close to Naples you can spend hours visiting the ancient ruins of Pompeii , the Roman city that was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted.

November is the perfect time to delve into what is arguably the most fascinating and important period in Italian – and Western civilisation’s – history. So use the peace and quiet as a good opportunity to explore the country’s wealth of Roman ruins.

Iconic Landmarks

Like museums and ruins, November is a fabulous time of year to visit Italy’s most iconic sights and landmarks. In no other season can you find sights such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Milan Cathedral without any of the tourists.

It’s a good time to get a selfie without the crowds, while you don’t have to wake up at 6 am to get a photograph without anyone else there to jump in at the worst moment.

Mediterranean Beaches

Head south if you’re looking for hot temperatures and plenty of sunshine, because the Mediterranean is still warm in November. Popular holiday destinations such as Sicily or the beaches in the south of the mainland are practically empty this time of year.

It’s a great opportunity to get a steal on a package holiday resort on the coast, and to make the most of the last vestiges of the European summer before it fades away.

No trip to Italy is complete without indulging in the best food that the country has to offer. So there’s plenty of eating to be done in November, along with food festivals and seasonal favourites – including truffles!

If it rains, you can jump into a cafe and enjoy some freshly brewed Italian coffee, or sit down in a restaurant and dig into the hearty Italian stews that emerge in autumn. You’ll find plenty of great pasta dishes and pizza everywhere you go, too!

The off-season is also a great time to enjoy guided food tours around parts of Italy, where you can enjoy being a part of much smaller groups than over the summer. Rome is a classic spot for a diverse food tour, along with Florence and of course the culinary capital, Bologna .

National Holidays in Italy in November

November is a quiet month for holidays; there’s only one national holiday scheduled throughout the whole month. All Saint’s Day is a national holiday in November, and it falls on the 1st of November.

For visitors though, that means you don’t have to worry about planning your trip around busy public days off, because there’s none of that in November!

Events and Festivals in Italy in November

While there might fewer public holidays in Italy in November, there are plenty of events and festivals held throughout the month, so it can be an exciting time to visit the country.

This is very much a cultural time of the year. While you won’t find many music festivals or big concerts like you have in summer, there are plenty of smaller-scale events, such as the Roma Jazz Festival, which is on all through November, or the legendary Turin Film Festival, held the last weekend of the month.

November is the end of the harvest season, and many towns and cities have wonderful local festivals and celebrations. One of the best foodie events this time of the year is the magnificent Truffle Festival found in north-west Italy, while in Piancastagnaio, Sienna, you can enjoy festivities devoted to the love of chestnuts.

It might be a little early for some, but November is also when the country starts gearing up for Christmas. In the big cities towards the end of the month, Christmas markets start to open, and it can be a great chance to visit them before they start to become much, much busier in December.

Italy is a diverse country, and it experiences four distinct seasons. Month wise, November is part of the fall or autumn season. Here is a quick breakdown,

  • Spring: March to May
  • Summer: June to August
  • Autumn: September to November
  • Winter: December to February

Our experience in Italy in November:

We spent close to a month exploring the length and breadth of the country. We extensively used public transportation including high-speed trains (and mixed a few guided tours in between).

Rome Italy in November

We explored popular places like Rome in November, Venice, Milan, Florence, and smaller towns and the Amalfi Coast. Our Italy itinerary included UNESCO World Heritage sites, trattoria hopping, and lots of food, shopping, and amazing views!

The pictures that you see in this post are from November – and the days when it was raining or overcast you can clearly see it, and when the skies were sunny – you will know it too! 🙂

We will go deeper into each, and more – we have also included weather and sightseeing for places close to Italy like San Marino and Monaco.

Rainy days average about 6 to 11 days a month. Overcast days are common in cities like Rome , Venice , and Milan , but it also gets cleared up the next day. Rain ranges from a slight drizzle to a heavy downpour.

The weather app in Italy actually is very accurate unlike here in Canada. So when we were in Rome, it warned us about rain from 4 to 8 pm local time, and accordingly, we planned our sightseeing activities. The first day we assumed it wouldn’t be THAT accurate, but it rained cats and dogs! We were completely drenched.

Although there was rain, we also got warm and sunny days in Italy, without any gray skies! The weather overall was pleasant and perfect for outdoor sightseeing and photography!

November is an autumn month, but it is a crossover or transition month too. So the weather is a little unpredictable.

And you will need to carry some woolen clothes, warm accessories, and waterproof boots. You must also carry tops and blouses for use during the day when the temperatures are warm and sunny.

In the evenings, the temperatures do dip a little, and a cardigan or a warm jacket is needed. Sunsets also happen sooner and when it rains it is darker than normal.

When we were exploring Rome, we had clear weather during the day. It was perfect for sightseeing, photos, walking, and chilling at various piazzas . Most days we had temperatures of 9 to 15 degrees Celsius (48 to 59 F). Late evenings it was slightly chilly, but not too cold.

Venice was similar, but it was much colder during the day. Overcast days were common. We did have a nice day when the weather was warm and nice (I also did a photoshoot and a gondola ride during that time), but certain parts of the city were flooded. Water did clear up during the course of the day (more on that below).

best places to visit in italy november

We stayed in Tuscany for a week in November and actually experienced no rains. But Florence and other Tuscan towns were chillier. We had to wear a light cardigan or a jacket at all times.

During our trip, Amalfi Coast had a severe thunderstorm warning, but we were still able to visit. Amalfi town was open with hotels, restaurants, and shops, but a waterproof jacket was important. Of course, no swimming and no sunbeds in November in Amalfi!

Advantages of visiting Italy in November

There are clear advantages of visiting Italy in November, as long as you are prepared and planned for it. Know that the weather is unpredictable, and hence we recommend planning to stay in a city for 1-3 days so that you can experience some sunny days for outdoor sightseeing.

And when it rains, well – Italy has a ton of museums, art galleries, restaurants, and oh shopping – so you won’t be bored. That’s guaranteed!

November is off season in Italy with fewer crowds

November is not a busy month as far as tourists go. You can say that it is a low season.

Popular cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice experience fewer crowds in November. Booking last minute entry tickets (for hard to get museum passes, etc) was actually easy, and we were in with very little waiting time.

best places to visit in italy november

It was easier to get a seat in a restaurant, store associates paid close attention to your queries, and tour guides chatted with us, sharing local insights and tips! All because it was not busy with crowds. All of our tours were small groups of 10 or less, and it was a nice experience.

High-speed trains were half full, and many compartments were almost empty.

Great flight and accommodation deals in November for Italy

If you are planning a trip to Italy, make a note of this – November, January, and February are great months for flight tickets. It is usually discounted – due to it being a low tourist season.

best places to visit in italy november

The same goes for hotels. We like to stay in mid-budget properties near or at the city centre, and we were able to score deals for $100 USD or less (double occupancy). These hotels are listed as 3 or 4 stars on Booking.com, which we use to book. Taxes were paid at the property with cash.

Enjoy festivals in November in Italy

These festivals might motivate you to visit Italy in November. November is Truffle Season in Italy, and the Alba White Truffle Festival is held from early October through late November every year. You will also find harvest-related and food festivals taking place in smaller towns across Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.

The capital city of Rome is home to two major festivals – Roma Europa Festival (art fest) and Rome Jazz Festival (music fest) and it takes place every year in November.

Many cities including Rome and the Italian Riviera start gearing up for Christmas markets and the festive season. Restaurants and stores are decorated by mid-November, and some areas also have Xmas stalls set up for the holiday season.

Festive lights in Rome

The Turin Film Festival also takes place in November.

All Saints Day (celebrated all over Italy on November 1st) and Feast of Our Lady of Good Health (Venice) are some of the other festivals that are held in Italy annually in November.

While All Saints Day is a national holiday, the Feast of Our Lady of Good Health Madonna della Salute Festival takes place in Venice on November 21st every year.

Santa Maria della Salute festival is a popular event that celebrates the Virgin Mary and includes a procession of boats from St. Mark’s Square to the Church of Santa Maria della Salute.

This festival had its origins in 1630 when Venetians were dying, and the city authorities pleaded for divine aid, promising to construct a church in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Most attractions are open, just be mindful of the weather

If your goal is to visit tourist attractions like the Colosseum in Rome , the Vatican Museums, Milan Cathedral , ride the gondola in Venice, and Pompeii ruins site – you will be happy to know that they are all open. Some attractions might have a seasonal schedule for fall and winter, but they will be welcoming visitors.

However, you have to be mindful of the weather – as all of these iconic landmarks are outside (unlike a museum).

We were blessed with good weather while exploring the Colosseum, as well as the gondola ride in Venice . While at the Pompeii archeological site it rained continuously – we had a tour booked and we completed our sightseeing using an umbrella and a rain jacket. It was fun though.

best places to visit in italy november

It also rained one of the days we were in Milan . Our entrance tickets to the Milan cathedral included rooftop access, and of course…..it was raining.

But the good news is that our tickets were valid for 3 days – so we explored the church and the museum on one day, and then on the third day (when the weather was a bit better) we utilized the rooftop access.

So don’t worry if you are unable to activate a ticket for weather related reasons.

Prepare for the weather and limited restaurant options in some places

You are going to be 10000% okay in cities in Italy . This particular travel tip is true for seasonal destinations like the Italian Riviera / Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast , and some of the Venetian Islands.

best places to visit in italy november

When we visited these listed destinations, not all restaurants were open. Burano and Murano islands were almost dead and close by afternoon. Same for Positano; Amalfi town was open though.

Italy in November is great for photography lovers

Italy in November is a great time for photography lovers! For one, there are fewer crowds, so wear your Instagrammable dresses and snap that photo for social media.

Girl at St Mark's Piazza in Venice in a day itinerary

Trust me, it is a pain when it is too bright for photos during the daytime! But the off-season is great, and also easy to edit later.

Being a crossover month, you can capture fall leaves in November as well.

Oh…Italy is so picturesque; so play with rainwater, puddles on the road and cute festive lights, and more!

Disadvantages: Things to consider when visiting Italy in November

To be honest, we don’t have a lot of negative things to say about visiting Italy in November. We had a great time traveling across the country and were able to check off all the popular attractions that we had on our Italy bucket list and more.

We ventured to quieter alleys, visited museums with ease, took awesome photos with fewer people, and just had a blast!

Too cold for beach time or swimming

If you are planning to visit Italy for its coast, or a beach vacation, then November is not the time. There are thunderstorm warnings, and swimming is not possible.

Ferries will be operating on a limited frequency.

Unpredictable Weather

This is true that the weather is a little unpredictable, so we recommend checking and planning for each day. Our recommendation to beat this con – is to pack an umbrella and a lightweight rain jacket.

best places to visit in italy november

We also suggest staying in a destination for at least a minimum of 2 days (3 is better), that way you can see the city in the rain, and also enjoy a warm day sightseeing.

The weather in November is not cold, it is wet. If you are okay with a little rain, you will LOVE Italy in November for all the good reasons (listed above).

Best places to visit in Italy in November: By Destination

Here are some of the activities and must see attractions in Italy in November,

Rome in November: Is November a good time to visit Rome, Italy?

The weather in Rome, Italy in November is slightly unpredictable. It is not cold, although it’s November. But it rains often.

You can expect daytime temperatures to be at 15+°C (60° F) with balmy temperatures and clear skies. Even with the rain, the temperatures are above 10° C (50°F).

Girl in Rome italy

We were able to explore the Colosseum grounds comfortably without having to worry about the heat or cold. A nice cardigan or lightweight jacket was enough to wander about outdoors.

A pair of waterproof walking shoes are a must. You can wear booties too – but leave your woolens at home (it is not cold yet).

Visiting museums, cathedrals, and stores will be a breeze as it is not super crowded. Piazzas had fewer people hanging out, and hence capturing photos or chilling out was easy.

In terms of accommodation, you can find suites at the center or near the Vatican for $100 USD or less (3 or 4 stars). Read all about how to spend 4 days in Rome

Venice in November

Venice is a popular destination in Italy, and between the months of October to January, it experiences a seasonal high tide, and together with rains and storms, it leads to a flood (high water aka ‘acqua alta’).

In 2019, mid-November Venice was 80% underwater, with many ground floors damaged. During our visit, we saw water (flood) in the San Marco Piazza with cafes and the square partially merged in water.

Acqua Alta in Venice in November

People were wearing colorful boots (known as Goldon plastic boots) that one can buy from the Piazza for 10 euros. They are one-time use only, but they are useful in keeping your feet and shoes dry.

In terms of sightseeing, there was no line-up anywhere. Various districts or Sestieri had fewer tourists, so wandering in Venice was a dream. Finding a table by a canalside cafe was also easy, and we always had the best view!

Temperature-wise Venice was on the cooler side (as compared to Rome). Places like Burano, Murano, and Torcello islands were very quiet, and the sunset was early.

Burano in November

Milan in November

There is not much difference in temperatures between Milan and Venice. During our trip, it rained for a day, and the next day it was bright and clear and there was no flooding in Milan.

It rains for 6+ days a month.

Milan Cathedral square

Milan surprisingly was very clean and actually enjoyable in the rain. We visited churches, museums/galleries and went shopping. It was a good experience taking a ride through the city soaking in the lovely weather (yea we like rain, and a nice cuppa latte and croissant to go with it).

best places to visit in italy november

The only thing to remember is that you won’t be able to enjoy its urban parks in the rain – it looked nice and green though.

Cinque Terre in November

The coast is not a great time to visit in November, especially if you are seeking a beach vacation. Restaurants and hotels will be limited.

You can hike, walk around villages, take photos, and hang out when the weather is nice. But to experience everything that the Riviera is known for, you will have to visit in the summer or fall.

Amalfi in November

Just like Cinque Terre, Amalfi was also quiet. With the rain, hiking is a challenge too.

Amalfi Coast beach view

Most of the village including the picturesque Positano will be closed (restaurants and limited hotels). During our visit in November, we drove past Ravello and Positano as it was quiet, but Amalfi town was slightly different (even though it was raining).

We visited the Amalfi Cathedral, which had nice places to eat and shop around. Some of the popular trattorias were also busy – like all tables were occupied. Marina Grande (beachfront) was lovely for a walk. You do have to wear warm clothing though for hikes or strolls.

Tuscany & Florence in November

Tuscany was the only place we experienced no rain or overcast days during our trip in November. There was a chill in the air, so a warm jacket and a scarf are essential.

Some of the small towns in Tuscany do get some snow in December, but in November there was none. We could still see some fall foliage in the first half of the month.

best places to visit in italy november

Pisa was almost empty and it was fun trying out different poses with the Leaning Tower!

The benefit of visiting Tuscany or Florence in November is fewer tourists. You can visit the Florence Duomo and Renaissance museums without waiting in line.

We would not say that Florence was deserted – there were visitors, but it was not crowded – it was easy to find tickets to attractions, and restaurants and stores were all open.

Other destinations: What is there to do in Italy in November?

Other than the prime destinations in Italy, you can head out to the Emilia Romagna region in November when it is celebrating the winter truffle season amidst some fall colors.

You can also explore various microstates like San Marino, Malta, and the Principality of Monaco.

We couldn’t visit Malta in November, because traveling via Sicily was an issue due to the weather and thunderstorms. So we had to skip it.  Of course, you can fly to Malta from Italy – that’s an option.

best places to visit in italy november

We visited San Marino and Monaco in November. Monaco was delightful with good weather, and festivities taking place in Monte Carlo. But San Marino was cold, wet, and foggy!

Monaco is best explored from Milan via Genoa, and San Marino is feasible via Florence and Rimini on a day trip (or longer).

Italy pulls in crowds all year round! Weather-wise late spring and early autumn are the best time to go to Italy. Temperatures are comfortable in these months – not too hot or cold. Plus there are fewer crowds in cities and popular attractions.  Tuscany, Amalfi, and Cinque Terre are pretty in the fall months, and cities are great in the spring!

Italian cities that are located in the central and southern parts of the country are warm. These include places like Florence, Rome, and Naples. Destinations in the northern part, particularly the Alps or Dolomites, are colder.

Northern Italy is the coldest of all the regions. Temperatures range between 2 to 10° Celsius (35-50°F).

The water is cold for a swim in October and November. Having said that, we saw people surfing near/in Genoa. Winter is the optimum time of year for surfing on the west coast of Italy.

Snow is very unlikely in Italian cities in November, but the Dolomites or the Alps might get some snow!

Is November a good time to visit Italy?

With no snow and pleasant weather, it is 1000% worth visiting Italy in November.

✓ It is a low tourist season with fewer crowds, so your Italy tour will be a breeze

✓ No line ups in touristy attractions

✓ Good flight deals, and accommodation options

✓ Pleasant temperatures, so you can go about sightseeing comfortably (not very hot, no snow)

We planned our trip to Italy using online resources and we were happy with our experience in November.

If you like city and culture-related attractions then you will enjoy visiting Italy in November  – museums, events, bars, and restaurants are open.

Hotels and flights were affordable when traveling from Canada or the USA. A big plus for visiting Italy in November is beating the summer heat and rush, literally especially in cities.

Fewer crowds mean more room for public transport, tours, and cobblestone lanes.

However, if you want to hit the beach, swim, and can’t stand the rain, then Italy in November is not the best time to visit.

Italy in November: Weather Info & Best Places to Travel (2024)

  • March 26, 2024
  • by Jenoa Matthes

View of Adige River in Verona Italy in November

Are you planning a trip to Italy in November?

November is a fantastic time to visit Italy if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a slower, more authentic experience. This is the start of low season, which means prices overall are cheaper for traveling, and the major cities are less busy.

With that being said, the major trade off is the weather. We have been to Italy multiple times during the month of November, and we’ve had mixed weather experiences. You may have beautiful days with blue skies, or cloudy and rainy days. Either way – Italy is beautiful rain or shine.

In November, many of the small towns have food festivals, celebrating local specialties, such as truffles and cheese. It’s also a great time of year to enjoy many of the indoor attractions.

In this guide, we are sharing all you need to know about visiting Italy in November. This includes an overview of the best places to visit, the weather, holidays, and tips on how to pack for your trip.

November Italy Weather

Map of weather throughout Italy in November

As we mentioned previously, the weather in November in Italy can be a bit of a hit or miss. The central and northern regions are typically much cooler with cloudy days and a chance of rain.

The southern regions are warmer but not ideal for enjoying the beach. It’s a good time to visit some of the small towns in places like Puglia and Sicily.

Overall, plan for chilly fall weather and potential rainstorms.

Is it rainy in November?

Yes, November is the rainiest month in Italy. The average rainfall in Florence is 4.39″, Rome is 3.28″, Venice is 2.67″, and Milan is 3.74″. Much higher than any other month during the year.

Average Temperature in Italy in November

  • Northern Italy: Average high temperatures between 55°F – 59°F (13°C – 15°C)
  • Central Italy: Average high temperatures between 61°F – 64°F (16°C – 18°C)
  • Southern Italy: Average high temperatures between 64°F – 68°F (18°C – 20°C)

Here’s an overview of the weather throughout Italy in November:

Our Experience:

We have been to Italy in November too many times to count. Mostly visiting northern Italy, from Venice to Milan and down to Florence.

In 2022, we spent the month of November living in Verona and planned many day trips to towns and cities around the region. Mantua was one of our favorite hidden gems that we discovered during this time.

The weather was chilly, with a mix of sunny and rainy days, and we had to wear coats most of the time. The best part about visiting in November is that there were very few tourists. Even places like Venice, Florence, and Milan are not nearly as crowded in November compared to peak tourist season.

We were able to enjoy some of the main sites, like St. Mark’s Square in Venice, without being run over by the crowds. There were still a fair amount of people – just significantly fewer tourists.

Based on our experiences, November is a prime time to go to the major tourist destinations like Venice, Rome, and Florence. The experience is simply calmer and more enjoyable.

Advantages of Visiting Italy in November

Colorful, Orange leaves in Verona in November

  • Fewer tourists: November is the start of the low season, which makes it an ideal time to enjoy some of the more popular destinations in Italy without the crowds. Rome, Florence, Milan, and Venice are all a bit more relaxed this time of year.
  • Low season prices: Travel costs are significantly more affordable compared to high season prices, particularly for flights and accommodation.
  • Food festivals: From north to south, the harvest season continues with food festivals throughout Italy. We share more of these in the holiday and festivals section below.
  • Plenty of indoor activities: Luckily, Italy is still a great experience, even if it’s cold. There are many museums, castles, and other indoor attractions to keep you busy during the late fall and winter seasons.

Disadvantages of Visiting Italy in November

Piazza Bra in Verona

  • Cold weather: Expect cooler temperatures and grey skies throughout Italy in November.
  • Potential rain: If you’ve been daydreaming about visiting Italy with blue skies and sunshine, November is not the time to go. It’s the rainiest month of the year, which means cloudy and wet days. Make sure to pack accordingly for rainy weather.
  • Closed restaurants and attractions: Many restaurants and tour operators close down for the winter season, especially in coastal areas like the Amalfi coast, Puglia, and Sicily. Plan ahead and be flexible if you are visiting the southern regions or smaller towns.

9 Best Places to Visit in Italy in November

1. venice in november.

gondola with people in venice

We recently went to Venice in November and loved it! In total, we have been to Venice 4 times, all during different months of the year, and November was by far the least crowded experience.

Compared to the peak summer months, where everything is packed and busy, November felt pretty calm and the lines for the main attractions weren’t nearly as long.

Of course, Venice is always busy, but if you want a less overwhelming trip, then we highly recommend going in the late fall.

In 2024, the world-famous Venice Biennale Art Exhibition takes place until November 24th. If you are a fan of contemporary art, then this is a must visit!

View of the Piazza Maggiore in bologna

Bologna is one of Italy’s hidden gems and is the capital of Italy’s Food Region – Emilia Romagna. We have spent over 2 months exploring this Medieval city, including the month of November, and fall is the best season to visit.

Known for its delicious food , November is a great time to visit local food producers and enjoy handmade pasta (pumpkin tortellini and pasta with porcini mushrooms) from some of the city’s best restaurants.

9. Christmas Markets in November

Christmas Market Stand in Verona, Italy in December

Many of Italy’s Christmas Markets start in mid to late November. It’s best to check the local city or town website for an exact schedule, as the date changes every year.

Based on our experience, the markets are less busy in November than in December, which is peak holiday season. So if you happen to be in Verona, Bolzano, or Florence near the end of November, then it’s worth checking out some of the local holiday markets.

Additionally, many cities start putting up Christmas decorations in November. Lights are strung above the charming streets, wreaths are hung on doors, and Christmas trees are placed in the main piazzas (squares). It’s an exciting and lively time to be in Italy.

Cost to Visit Italy in November

Since November is the off-season for travelers, prices are much lower this time of year. Expect cheaper prices for airfare, activities, hotels, and rental cars.

The only exception is All Saints’ Day, which is a national holiday on November 1st. Many locals take vacation over this time. In our experience, hotel prices are usually more expensive over the holiday.

Holidays & Festivals in November

Basket of fall produce with wine at a harvest festival in Modena, Italy

The main holiday in November is All Saints’ Day, which is a public national holiday on November 1st. Plan for closures, as many restaurants and shops close to celebrate.

Here are some additional festivals in Italy in November:

  • Cioccolatò: Turin’s annual chocolate takes place at the beginning of the month. Taste some of the best chocolate in Italy from the country’s top chocolatiers.
  • White Truffle Festival: Over the course of 2 months in the town of Alba in Italy’s Piedmont region, this festival celebrates the highly coveted white truffle. With cooking classes, Medieval festivities, wine tastings, and other events, this is a must-visit if you are truffle fan.
  • Turin Film Festival: Experience Italy’s 2nd largest film festival that takes place at the end of November in Turin.

Keep your eye out for other food festivals in November. Many small towns have their own local celebrations throughout the month.

What to wear in Italy in November?

Most of Italy is cold and rainy throughout November. Here’s what we recommend packing for this weather:

  • Pack for rain: Since November is Italy’s rainiest month, you’ll want to bring a rain jacket, water resistant shoes, and an umbrella.
  • Pack layers: Bring a sweater, scarf, coat, and a hat to stay warm. Pack some lighter layers as well just in case it’s warmer than expected.
  • Bring comfortable shoes: No matter where you go in Italy, there’s always a lot of walking involved. Wear shoes that you can walk in all day.

Our trip to Italy in November was cloudy and wet with cooler temps. We wore sweaters and coats most of the time, especially near the end of the month.

Traveling to Italy in November: What You Need to Know

Via della Conciliazione – by Nicola (creative commons)

When you imagine your dream trip to Italy, chances are very good you imagine sun-dappled piazzas, sunny beaches, sun-soaked hills… Basically, you imagine sun. November in Italy is not sunny. It can still be a great month for a trip to Italy, however, if you’re more focused on saving money than on getting a tan.

November is something of a bridge between Italy’s fall shoulder season and the winter off-season, and prices are generally low on things like airfare and accommodation. The trade-off for that drop in price is that the weather isn’t what most of us would consider ideal. Keep reading to find out what to expect from November in Italy, including the weather and what’s on the calendar.

Weather in Italy in November

November is Italy’s rainiest month, almost to a region across the peninsula. It’s not usually the coldest month on the calendar, but it’s often when a sweater and warm coat come in handy (not to mention water resistant shoes).

In Italy, the southern regions tend to stay warmer year-round, so if you’re hunting down something that feels more like late fall than early winter you should head south. And no matter where you plan to go, you should bring an umbrella.

Some average temperature ranges for different parts of Italy are:

  • Northern Italy: 35-50°F (2-10°C)
  • Central Italy: 45-60°F (7-16°C)
  • Southern Italy: 55-65°F (13-18°C)

And, as always, check the current extended forecast for where you’re actually going just before you leave – when you’re packing is a good time, actually – so you can find out in advance if there’s an unseasonably cold or warm spell predicted.

Holidays & Festivals in Italy in November

November starts with an Italian national holiday – All Saints Day ( Ognissanti or Tutti i Santi in Italian) on November 1. Some places have semi-public festivities around All Saints Day, but for the most part this is the day every year when many Italians visit cemeteries to pay respects to relatives who have died. They clean up graves and leave flowers, so if you’re the kind of person for whom cemeteries are must-see sights, November 1 or 2 are great days to head to a cemetery in Italy. (Just remember to be respectful of families tending to relatives’ graves, okay?)

Most of the fall harvest festivals are over by November, but it’s worth checking the calendars of the places you’ll be visiting just in case. Sometimes festivals continue from late October into early November – such as the White Truffle Festival in Alba. Turin’s chocolate festival, CioccolaTÒ, was moved to November from March, so it’s now an excellent November event option if you’re in the north. Browse my (nowhere near comprehensive) list of holidays and festivals in Italy to get a start on your November event list.

Why should you go to Italy in November?

The weather isn’t the selling point for visiting Italy in November, there’s no getting around that. The selling points are things like saving money and avoiding crowds, which are big perks. Italy never completely empties of tourists, of course, but lines are substantially shorter in November than in the summer. And since so many of the top things people want to do or see in Italy are indoors, the weather may not be the huge factor it seems at the start.

One thing to keep in mind (besides the weather) is that some attractions and hotels have different off-season schedules than they keep in the summer. This might mean shorter open hours at a museum or – in some places – hotels that completely close their doors for several months over the winter. This isn’t an issue in big tourist cities, but in some smaller destinations it can be. You might want to browse accommodation options before finalizing plans, just to make sure there will be something open when you’re in town.

Overall, if packing an umbrella and planning to visit lots of indoor attractions doesn’t bother you, you’ll have a fine time in Italy in November.

HI I am planning to make a trip to Italy. Can some one sugges whether October is a good to visit Italy. I am planning for a 8-10 days trip to cover Italy. In between planning to Visit Paris for a day or two. Flying to Milan. Can some one also help me in finalising the schedule.

I have never been to Italy

Here’s my article about traveling to Italy in October , Nibu, so you can decide whether that sounds good to you. Personally, I love Italy in October!

Hi there. I am attending a conference in Rome late November to early December. I was thinking of having a 2 week holiday before this in Southern Italy on some small group tours. I was thinking Sicily, Puglia and possibly Malta, regions that I have not explored in my previous trips to Italy and I have never been to Malta. My options for tours are limited given the time of year and the weather forecast for Sicily doesn’t appeal to me on first glance. I know I will need to dress appropriately and I am not looking for a suntan, but I don’t want to be in rain and/or snow constantly. I would appreciate any comments about my concerns, or suggestions on where else I could consider? I like good food and meeting people, am interested in scenery, history and museums, And on this holiday, something done at a relaxed pace. Not interested in big bus tours. Am I expecting too much? I look forward to hearing from you!

I think you’ll be stuck with a strong likelihood of wet weather in November – it’s the rainiest month pretty much everywhere in Italy. It probably won’t be quite as wet (or cool) in Sicily as in Milan in November, for instance, but the chances are good it’ll still be chilly. (I was there in mid-October one year and it was unseasonably cold and raining. You never know.) There are plenty of indoor museums and churches to visit that could keep you entertained in Palermo alone, though visiting any of the outdoor sights in Sicily – say, the Valley of the Temples – may be less fun if it’s rainy.

The 15 best places to visit in Italy, from Venice to the Cinque Terre

best places to visit in italy november

Rome should be the centerpiece of your trip if you’re going to Italy for the first time © Kathrin Ziegler / Getty Images

Home to some of the greatest artworks, historical monuments and food on the planet, and with the kind of varied landscapes that you often have to cross continents to see, Italy elates, inspires and moves its visitors like few other countries.

From its art- and architecture-stuffed cities to its astonishing diversity of natural landscapes – dramatic coastlines, serene lakes, pristine mountains, and those famous rolling hills – picking just a handful of destinations to visit in this wonderful country is no easy task.

So how do you decide where to go? It all depends on what you’re looking for in your Italian odyssey, whether that’s history, art, beaches, hiking or even food. No matter your passion, our list of 15 must-see places in Italy should be your starting point.

Best for history

Once caput mundi (capital of the world), Rome was legendarily spawned by a wolf-suckled boy, developed into a vast empire, rooted itself as the home of the Catholic church, and is now the repository of more than two millennia of art and architecture.

Rome should definitely be the centerpiece of your trip if you’re going to Italy for the first time, but there's simply too much to see in one visit, from the Pantheon and the Colosseum to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and countless works by Caravaggio. So do as countless others have done before you: toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and promise to return.

Planning tip: There’s an overwhelming amount to see here, and with limited public transport in the city center, your choice of hotel can be crucial. Map out the sights you’re most interested in before you book – if you want to be at the Vatican at opening time, for example, don't stay near the Colosseum.

Best for a Renaissance fix

From Botticelli’s Venus , emerging coyly from the water in the Uffizi Gallery , to the mind-boggling dome of its cathedral, Florence is a feast for the eyes. This was, of course, the seat of the Renaissance, and there are knock-out names at every turn – Michelangelo in the Accademia, Donatello in the Bargello, Leonardo and Raphael in the Uffizi.

Further afield in  Tuscany – Italy's most romanticized region – is an undulating landscape of sinuous cypress trees, olive groves and coveted regional treasures. Glory in the Gothic majesty of Siena and the Manhattan-esque skyline of medieval San Gimignano before exploring the vineyards of Italy's most famous wine region, Chianti , and the rolling, cypress-studded hills of the Val d’Orcia.

Planning tip: You’re best off without a car if you’re sticking to major towns and cities since Tuscany has a good rail network. But if you want to explore the countryside, you’ll definitely need a car.

3. The Dolomites

Best for dramatic mountains

Scour the globe, and you'll find plenty of taller, bigger and more geologically volatile mountains, but few can match the romance of the pink-hued granite Dolomites .

Maybe it's their harsh, jagged summits, the vibrant skirts of spring wildflowers, or the rich cache of Ladin legends. Then again, it could just be the magnetic draw of money, style and glamor at Italy's most fabled ski resort, Cortina d'Ampezzo , or the linguistic curiosity of picture-postcard mountain village Sappada . Whatever the reason, this tiny pocket of northern Italy takes seductiveness to dizzying heights.

4. Amalfi Coast

Best for classic beauty

Italy's most celebrated coastline is a gripping strip: coastal mountains plunge into the piercing blue sea in a prime-time vertical scene of precipitous crags, sun-bleached villages and cliffs rearing up behind. Between sea and sky, mountaintop hiking trails deliver Tyrrhenian panoramas fit for a god.

While some may argue that the peninsula's most beautiful coast is Liguria's Cinque Terre or Calabria's Costa Viola, it is the Amalfi Coast that has seduced and inspired countless greats, from Tennessee Williams and DH Lawrence to Elizabeth Taylor, Virginia Woolf and Jackie Kennedy. Of course, its staggeringly romantic looks also make it one of the best places in Italy for couples.

Planning tip: Yes, driving along the Amalfi Coast is one of the world’s most famous road trips, but often it feels like everyone else on the planet has the same idea as you. Traffic can be nose-to-tail, and parking is effectively nonexistent. Instead, take the ferry between towns or travel by public transport .

The ruined city of Pompeii. People walk around the ruins of the former city, which was destroyed by Mt Vesuvius. The volcano is visible in the background of the image.

Best for stepping back in time

Frozen in its death throes, the time-warped ruins of Pompeii hurtle you 2000 years into the past. Wander through chariot-grooved Roman streets, lavishly frescoed villas and bathhouses, food stores and markets, theaters, and even an ancient brothel.

Then, in the eerie stillness, your eye on ominous Mt Vesuvius, ponder Pliny the Younger's terrifying account of the town's final hours: “Darkness came on again, again ashes, thick and heavy. We got up repeatedly to shake these off; otherwise, we would have been buried and crushed by the weight.”

Planning tip: If you have time, the other major city destroyed by the eruption, Herculaneum, is also worth a visit. Much smaller than Pompeii, its buildings are better preserved, and the location – surrounded by its modern descendant, Ercolano – makes the site even more piquant. Like Pompeii, it’s easily reached on the Circumvesuviana train.

6. Emilia-Romagna

Best for foodies

In a region as overwhelmingly foodie as Emilia-Romagna , it's only natural that its capital, Bologna , is dubbed “La Grassa” (the fat one). Many belt-busting Italian classics hail from here, including mortadella, tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù. Shop in the deli-packed Quadrilatero district – home to food stalls since medieval times – then hop on the train for an afternoon in Modena for world-famous aged balsamic vinegar.

Leave room for Parma , hometown of parmigiano reggiano cheese and the incomparable prosciutto di Parma. Wherever you plunge your fork, toast with a glass or three of Emilia-Romagna's renowned Lambrusco – a world away from the sickly sweet wine that was exported in the past.

The village of Varenna on the shores of Lake Como. The village has many colourful buildings right by the water's edge, and is backed by dense green forest.

7. Lago di Como

Best for a slice of luxury

If it's good enough for the Clooneys and vacationing Obamas, it's good enough for mere mortals. Nestled in the shadow of the Rhaetian Alps, dazzling Lago di Como is Lombardy's most spectacular lake. Its lavish Liberty-style villas are home to movie moguls, fashion royalty, and literal royalty, while the lake's siren calls include gardens at Villas Melzi d'Eril , Carlotta , and Balbianello that blush pink with camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons in April and May.

The city of Como itself is a hotbed of arresting architecture, from the Gothic cathedral to Palazzo Terragni – built by the Fascists as their party headquarters, it’s a classic example of Italian 1930s Rationalism and a striking reminder of the atrocities committed by the regime.

Planning tip: Como is like the Amalfi Coast – the roads are clogged, and parking is a huge problem. Instead of driving, use public transport; there’s an excellent ferry and bus network, as well as a train line along the eastern edge of the lake.

8. Sardinia

Best for beaches and coastline

The English language cannot accurately describe the varied blue, green and – in the deepest shadows – purple colors of Sardinia’s seas. While models, ministers and perma-tanned celebrities wine, dine and sail along the glossy Costa Smeralda , much of the island – the Med’s second largest after Sicily – remains a wild, raw playground.

Explore its rugged coastal beauty, from the tumbledown boulders of Santa Teresa di Gallura and the wind-chiseled cliff face of the Golfo di Orosei to the windswept beauty of the Costa Verde's dune-backed beaches.

But spend time inland too, and you’ll find some of Europe’s finest prehistoric remains: mysterious nuraghi (megalithic buildings), burial sites so grand they’re known as “giants’ tombs,” and the mountain villages of Barbagia, where locals still practice centuries-old traditions.

A busy street in Naples. The street is narrow and hemmed in by tall apartment buildings. A motorbike with two passengers drives down the street, while people dine in cafes with tables spilling onto the pavements.

Best for sheer italianità

Pompeii, pizza and a whole lot of panache – Naples is a city like no other. Layered like lasagna, each strip of history on top of the last, this is a place where (underground) you can walk along ancient Greek and Roman roads, while at street level there are sumptuous churches, baroque palaces and Maradona – Maradona everywhere .

Outside the city, Vesuvius looms over the time capsules of Pompeii and Herculaneum, while in town, living in the shadow of a volcano gives life a sense of urgency. All that makes for a place like nowhere else .

Planning tip: Naples becomes less chaotic from the water. Taking the ferry isn’t only an option if you’re going to islands like Ischia and Procida – you can also take a boat from the city to Sorrento , Positano and the Amalfi Coast.

Best for a fairytale city

“Unique” is an overused word, but in the case of Venice , there’s no better description. This really is a dreamscape of intricately carved palazzos, gilded churches and world-class museums, all floating on water and crisscrossed by quiet canals.

Avoid the temptation to do a quick drop-in visit to see the main sights – the real Venice is in the silent canals and narrow alleyways, which cast a spell on all who move through them. Tick off the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco , but then stay on to experience this most precious, and precarious, of cities.

Local tip: This is not the place to run a tight schedule. Leave time to wander the alleys , look inside the churches and artisan shops you pass, and hop on a vaporetto that’ll chug through the islands of the lagoon.

11. Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso

Best for hiking

If you're pining for a mind-clearing retreat, lace up your hiking boots and explore over 500km (310 miles) of marked trails and mule tracks traversing “Grand Paradise.”

Part of the Graian Alps and one of Italy's very first national parks, Gran Paradiso's pure, pristine spread encompasses 57 glaciers and alpine pastures awash with wild pansies, gentians and alpenroses, not to mention a healthy population of Alpine ibex, for whose protection the park was originally established. At 4061m (13,323ft), the eponymous Gran Paradiso is the park's only peak, accessed from tranquil Cogne.

12. Mount Etna

Best for thrill seekers

Known to the Greeks as the “column that holds up the sky,”  Mt Etna is not only Europe's largest volcano, it's one of the world's most active. The ancients believed the giant Tifone (Typhoon) lived in its crater and lit the sky with spectacular pyrotechnics; today they simply call it idda , or “her.”

At 3326m (10,912ft), she literally towers above Sicily's Ionian Coast . Tackle the climb on foot, on a guided 4WD tour, or stick to the lower slopes, where you’ll find some of Italy’s most exciting wines being grown in the uber-fertile volcanic soil. Sicily is one of the nicest places in Italy to visit, thanks to its extraordinary wealth of history and architecture, its jaw-dropping coastline and, of course, the ever-welcoming Sicilians.

13. Cinque Terre and the Liguria coast

Best for classic coastline

Liguria’s remote Cinque Terre area is coastal Italy at its most spectacular. Five seaside villages wedged between cliffs, encircled by a national park and connected by clifftop footpaths, this is a place where humanity has lived in symbiosis with nature for thousands of years. People have chiseled terraces into the steep cliffs and grown wine here since Roman times; until the 20th century, the locals got about by sea or footpath.

The villages themselves are gorgeous, but spare some time for a hike along the Sentiero Azzurro, the most popular of the paths connecting them. Cinque Terre may be the best known, but Liguria’s coastline is one showstopper coastal village after another – additional highlights include Portofino , Portovenere and Santa Margherita Ligure .

Planning tip: This is another area where it’s not worth driving – there are ferry services, but our favorite option is the train, which runs along the coast and stops at each of the villages.

View of Alberobello's Rione Monti district and its trulli – traditional white round houses – at dusk

14. Valle d’Itria

Best for picture-perfect villages

They look like hobbit houses – small conical-roofed cottages, often stitched together to form a bigger home but always fairytale pretty, whatever the size. Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is famous for its trulli, but you won’t find them all over the region.

Head south of Bari, in from the coast and up onto the high karst plateau, and you’ll find the Valle d’Itria , where the green fields around towns like Cisternino and Locorotondo are dotted with trulli. Alberobello is the center of it all – the centro storico of the town is nothing but streets of them. This is one of the prettiest parts of Italy – truly.

Best for a real city break

Italy’s fashion capital  often gets a bad rap – too international, too organized, not chaotic enough. Don’t believe it. Where else can you go from a Gothic-style cathedral, started in the 14th century, to masterpieces by Leonardo (his Last Supper fresco in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is a showstopper, but so is the Sala delle Asse in the Castello Sforzesco , which he painted as a trompe l’oeil forest bower)?

Milan's restaurants pull together the best food from the Italian peninsula, it’s home to one of Italy’s rare cocktail scenes, and its fashion houses are transforming the city’s modern art scene with venues like Fondazione Prada , an old distillery now housing works by the likes of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, as well as putting on top-notch temporary exhibitions.

Planning tip: Milan doesn’t really have high and low seasons like the rest of Italy does; instead, its hotel rates rocket up and down depending on whether there’s a major event in town. Avoid Design and Fashion Weeks if you're traveling on a budget .

Here, you'll find the most important relic from the Roman Empire (the Colosseum), some of Michelangelo's greatest works (in the Sistine Chapel), an 18th century Baroque-style fountain (the Trevi Fountain) and, of course, the center of Catholicism (Vatican City). This peaceful town's biggest draws are its sights dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Italy's patron saints, including the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses his tomb as well as colorful frescos, and The Woods of San Francesco. Beyond its religious heritage, Assisi is worth a visit for its picturesque streets and sweeping views, while its location also makes it ideal for a truffle hunting excursion or wine tasting tour.

As the location of several ancient Greek legends, Sicily has an almost mythical quality. Once you visit for yourself, you'll see why so many writers were inspired by this island, which happens to be the largest in the Mediterranean. Be enchanted by Sicily's crystal-clear waters and golden beaches. Marvel at Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, or try hiking up it in summer or skiing down it in winter. Also save time for taking in the many cultures that have called this island home at its various cathedrals and archaeological sites.

This former Roman city in southern Italy is equal parts chilling and impressive. Pompeii was left almost completely intact after it was buried in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Its astonishingly well-preserved ruins now provide present-day visitors a glimpse into what life was like during ancient times. True history buffs might also enjoy a trip to nearby Herculaneum, another city that was preserved by the same eruption, while more adventurous explorers should consider hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius for jaw-dropping panoramas of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula.

Best known for its Shakespeare ties, Verona appeals to fans of "Romeo and Juliet" with themed tours of the sights that allegedly inspired the play. But there is more to this city than its literary link. Verona, located about 15 miles east of Lake Garda, is also home to several impressive attractions and historic buildings (the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after all). Travelers won't want to miss the Arena di Verona, a first-century Roman amphitheater that is still in use, and Giardino Giusti, a beautifully sculpted Renaissance garden.

Sardinia provides the best of both worlds. Costa Smeralda is all about luxury, with its lush beaches and coves overlooking yacht-filled waters. And away from all of the glitz and glamour of Costa Smeralda, you'll find a more laid-back side of the island, including small medieval towns where Sardinians still practice sheepherding and wear traditional clothing. What's more, Sardinia features several ancient ruins, such as UNESCO World Heritage-listed Su Nuraxi di Barumini.

The small, crescent-shaped village of Portofino is known as a vacation hot spot for the rich and famous. The water surrounding Portofino is often filled with yachts and is great for swimming and diving. Plus, the area's beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an excellent place to unwind. Thought to have been inhabited 12,000 years ago, Matera is one of the world's oldest continually occupied towns. Located in the Basilicata region in southern Italy, just west of Puglia, Matera's distinguishing features are its sassi (cave dwellings), which were inhabited until the 1950s. While here, look out for the many viewpoints, called belvederes, for a glimpse of the breathtaking cliffside. Visit Sasso Caveoso for the Casa Grotta cave house (inhabited until 1957) and the Santa Maria de Idris, a rupestrian church carved from the rocky landscape. Meanwhile, in Sasso Barisano – the oldest part of the city – you'll find modern comforts like hotels, restaurants and shops.

There are several reasons why Bologna, the capital of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is often called "la dotta, la grassa e la rossa" ("the learned, the fat and the red"). For one, it's home to the oldest university in Europe, the University of Bologna. The city is also a food lover's dream thanks to its world-renowned cuisine, which includes Italian staples like tortellini and lasagna Bolognese. Bologna even features a gelato university and the food-themed amusement park, FICO Eataly World. Plus, the city boasts an array of terra cotta-roofed medieval buildings, including a pair of leaning towers.

Located in the northwest corner of Italy, Turin is the perfect city break brimming with grand architecture, museums and delightful cuisine. Must-visit attractions include Mole Antonelliana (a former synagogue turned into a cinema museum), the 16th-century Royal Palace of Turin and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum). Italy in november with kids: all you need to know to plan a trip.

Trevi Fountain in Rome on rainy day

All you need to know to plan a trip to Italy in November with kids in tow! A trip planning guide for families, by an Italian mom, with info on weather, best places to visit in November in Italy with kids, when to book what, November travel tips.

November is a peculiar month to visit Italy with kids .

This month is one of the very few when Italy goes through a low season, a time with tourism crowds at a minimum and local life at its top: it’s a great time to see how normal life in Italy is!

However, November in Italy is low seasons for a reason.

The weather is not always great, you’ll be wearing coats and scarves rather than pretty summer clothes and many outdoor activities will have to wait for warmer times.

If you are planning a November trip to Italy with kids, expectations and picking the right locations is key.

I can help with this!

I am from Rome and I have two children. In November, schools have a break for us and we always use this time to explore Italy off season.

In this guide, we share all our top family tips for a wonderful trip to Italy in November, based on our experience!

No time to read now? Pin this for later!

November in Italy with kids: setting expectations

November in Italy is the month when autumn transitions into winter.

This means that you have limited times of daylight, some rainy days and you will want a coat: in most of the country you won’t need a very heavy one, yet humidity and temperatures will make you want to wrap up.

You will however still able to enjoy time at the playground most days.

At the start of the month, you may even be as lucky as we were last year in Venice and find yourself in sort sleeves or only in need for a light sweater (see photo)!

The best places to visit in November with kids in Italy are cities, as they can offer indoor activities when you need to find shelter.

While places don’t close as such in November, you will find small coastal villages with a strong summer tourism vocation to be in their low season, with limited tourism services due to low demand and weather constraints.

My daughter in early November in Venice with a light jumper

The same happens with country stays and wineries, that follow agricultural calendars for their activities.

While November is amazing in Rome and Venice, for instance, it is not a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre with kids .

While an adult might make the most of the weather by relaxing with a book, there is little to nothing to do for kids there out of season. Therefore, expectations are key.

November in Italy: important dates and festivities

The most important date to keep in mind if planning a trip to Italy in November is the 1st of November All Saints ( Ognissanti ), which is a National Holiday.

On this day, Italians are off work and this may result in longer lines at museums and exhibitions.

Depending on the day of the week on which this festivity falls, Italians may make a long weekend out of it, which may impact prices in popular localities and train seat availability.

Main attractions tend to stay open on this day.

Top tip: book transport and activities in advance if traveling on a long weekend as Italians travel a lot at this time, making it busier than you may expect.

November in Italy weather patterns

November is a fall / winter month in Italy.

In terms of temperatures, this is historically what you can expect:

As you can see, the weather patterns are not as straightforwards as ‘cold and rainy north – warm and dry south’. Expect November to be changeable and potentially chilly everywhere.

In practical terms, this means that you need to pack closed, rain proof shoes, long pants / jeans/ sweaters, coat, scarf, long sleeve /pants pyjamas.

For babies and toddlers on strollers, you want a stroller footmuff or at least blankets you can easily zip / unzip, put on / off.

Where in Italy is best in November? The best places to visit in Italy in November with kids

My favorite places to visit in Italy with kids in this season are:

Rome in November with kids

Rome is a very fun city to visit with kids of all ages and the lower crowds of November make this month one of the most enjoyable of all!

Things you can do in Rome in November include:

  • Sightseeing (Rome’s tops sites with fewer crowds are so much easier!
  • Take a kid-friendly class like pasta making, mosaic making, pizza making. A super way to escape the rain!
  • Indoor attractions such as Ikono interactive museum, the museum of illusions
  • Kid friendly tours such as Percy Jackson Tour (in a museum, indoor)

best places to visit in italy november

Bologna with kids in November

Bologna is a lovely city to visit with kids and November is one of the best times to enjoy its famous food scene: ravioli, tortellini and lasagne are wonderful cold weather dishes!

With kids, you can enjoy the city but also the nearby Ferrari Museum, which is guaranteed to be a hit with car lovers but not only: it is such a flashy, inspiring place, it’s hard not to love it!

best places to visit in italy november

Venice in November with kids

I adore Venice in November, especially at the start of month, as this is a time when crowds are low and temperatures still mild.

My favorite time of all is the first week in November. Ofter at this time you still have lovely sunny days and the humidity is not excessive.

Things I love to do with the kids in Venice include mask making, glass working, rowing class (my absolute favourite), all typical activities and crafts of this area!

best places to visit in italy november

Puglia in November with kids

November is a lovely time to visit Puglia with kids, provided they are aware that this month won’t allow for beach time.

The reason why I love this time is that the weather is often still mild and sunny and crowds are low, so you can see places such as Alberobello at their quietest.

Our most successful family trip to Puglia was in early November (first week), we also included Matera and it was top!

You can read here >>> our 4 days in Puglia and Matera itinerary

My kids in Matera

Florence in November with kids

Florence tends to get quite chilly in November. Yet, I love to come here at this time as crowds really are a problem in the city at almost any other time!

In November in Florence with kids we love to take cooking classes, gelato classes, and visit the museums (both the traditional ones and the unusual ones like the selfie museum or museum of Illusions!

You can read here >>> our travel guide to visiting Florence with kids

Need to know : Florence is a great starting point to visiting the Tuscany countryside. Yet, in November not all activities kids usually like (horse riding, farm visits etc) are operational. If thinking of going at this time, I recommend you read out tips here >>> tips for visiting Tuscany with kids in winter

Other popular destinations in Italy in November: what to expect

Is cinque terre open in november.

November is not a good time to visit Cinque Terre, an area famous for hiking paths and coastal views.

At this time, the season is in-between summer and winter and tends to miss the beauty of both.

You cannot bathe or enjoy the beach, several paths are closed and many hotels are shut for the cold season.

This is not necessarily a problem for adults, but the lack of indoor entertainment in the area can be a problem for kids. The Genoa aquarium is the one exception, but it won’t fill more than an afernoon.

If November is the only time when you can visit, your best bet is to go on a day trip and wait for a day with no rain.

You can find the weather forecast here : check a couple of days before for maximum accuracy.

What is Lake Como like in November?

Lake Como is very quiet in November.

At this time, the temperatures drop, the sunny day diminishes and the lake becomes a place for contemplative relaxation in a nice hotel rather than outdoor pursuits.

It can still be nice to come here as a day trip from Milan however, it is wise to check the weather first and make sure torrential rain is not in the cards.

You can find here >>> my guide to Lake Como with kids

Milan itself is pretty grey in November however, this can be a nice time to visit to avoid crowds and long lines.

Piazza dei Mercanti, Milano

Is November a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

November is not the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast with kids.

The weather here in November is a mix of good and grey days and many tourism businesses shut for the winter, meaning you have a lower choice of accommodation and few services available.

While this is not necessarily an issue for adults, kids may find coming here at this time very limiting: no swimming, no boat tours and lack of indoor entertainment can affect their experience.

You can, however, visit Pompeii and Naples and, if the weather cooperates, it may be possible to visit the coast too! I would just be conscious of making the coast the main stop.

Low crowds are a rarity here and allow you to see the area at a better, slower pace and the sea in winter has a special beauty: if you are happy not to be in the water, this can be a nice time for a relaxing, contemplative stay in one of the areas beautiful hotels.

Pick one with a view and take the beauty of the Costiera in!

Is November a good month to visit Sicily?

November can be a wonderful month to visit Sicily for sightseeing. However, it is not an all year round se and sun destinations so don’t promise kids days at the beach thinking the Southern location will make it hot.

November in Sicily can be nice and sunny yet it is more suited to visits to temples and cities than coastal pursuits.

You can find our guides to Sicily here

What to book in advance in Italy in November

In November, I recommend you make advance bookings for the main Italian attractions, which are pretty much always busy no matter the time of the yeat.

In particular, I recommend you book:

Last Supper, Milan via their official site here  or via GetYourGuide  here

Colosseum, Rome , via the  official site . Tickets get released from 30 days before.

Vatican, Vatican City, Rome : tickets sell out fast and operate on a time slot system. You can get them on the  official site  of the museums or choose a guided tour via GetYourGuide  here . Tickets tend to come out 60 to 90 days in advance.

What to pack for Italy in November

We will discuss all these and more! We’ll see how’s the weather in November in Rome Italy , and what are the reasons this month is perfect for a city break or a mountain trip in Italy. Weather in Italy in November – Places to visit and things to do

Since Italy is a southern European country, the weather in Italy in November isn’t that bad if you’d be going to other European countries like France, England, or Germany. In Italy, the weather this month is still pretty nice, and you don’t need winter coats and a giant scarf either. Italy Rome weather in November is still warm, compared to other capital cities in Europe. If you’re planning to visit Italy in November, you’ll find less crowded cities, where you can enjoy more sightseeing.

Weather in Italy in November

best places to visit in italy november

As I have mentioned earlier, the weather for Italy in November is already colder but it’s still not that bad to not be able to enjoy the outdoors. Weather in the north of Italy is between 2-10°C on average, but count it in that a big part of the north is in the mountain. If you’re going to Venice , Verona, or Milan , the average is between 6-12°C.

Central Italy is warmer, usually between 7-16°C, so a nice getaway in Florence or the towns in Tuscany is actually a nice idea! Though this month isn’t as colorful as October, it’s still nice. Then, if you want a warmer area, southern Italian has an average temperature between 13-18°C. Visiting Naples , or a city break in Sicily are both great ideas, as well as road trips.

Best Places to Visit in Italy in November

best places to visit in italy november

When you’re planning a trip to Italy and you have to calculate the weather in Italy in November, just like for Italy in October , we suggest planning city breaks in bigger cities or road trips in warmer areas. Beaches and seaside are not for November weather, so we don’t suggest that, or seaside towns and cities since it can be really painful if there’s a cold wind by the sea.

Big cities like Rome, Florence , Venice, Milan, or Turin are great for a November visit. If you want to avoid rainy days , think about southern cities which are too hot during the summer for city strolls. And, of course, don’t forget the mountains, since, in the Italian Alps, many winter sports initiate in November time.

Best November Activities

best places to visit in italy november

Considering the Italy weather in November, we have to consider the activities. Since there are quite a few rainy days on average, especially in northern Italy , it’s good to think more about indoor activities. You can go visit museums in Italy , there are plenty, and they are all fabulous. Also, you can visit castles and villas, churches , and galleries.

Considering the weather in November in Rome Italy, taking a cooking class in Rome , or other cities like Florence , Bologna, etc, is also a great activity, or probably one of the best activities you could do in Italy. For those who love the outdoors, November hikes, skiing, snowboarding, tracking, ski tracks, and everything in between these activities are great ideas for Italy. You can go to one of the best places to stay in the Dolomites , book a spa hotel, relax, do outdoor sports, and visit a nearby city too. Nothing better than a trip like that!

Benefits of a November trip to Italy

best places to visit in italy november

The country is more peaceful in November. It’s probably because of the weather in Italy in November, but both tourists and locals prefer to stay cozy and comfortable. If we look at Italy Rome weather in November, and the number of tourists, November is a pretty low month, with significantly fewer tourists, but still quite a lot.

City breaks and sightseeing are great during this month not only because you’re not going to collapse from the hotness, and you’ll have space to see every sight, and you can avoid the huge crowds in touristy places. I think this is the biggest benefit of a trip to Italy during the colder months, that you can actually get to enjoy the place without crowds. And crowds in touristy places in Italy are worse than in the streets of Manhattan!

Wrapping up November

So, to wrap up the weather for Italy in November, we want to remind you that even if it’s Italy, it’s pretty cold during November, so a jacket or coat is needed. If you’re looking for low-season prices and benefits, we suggest you plan a trip to Italy during this month, and definitely consider day spas, spa hotels, and other relaxing places and activities for a November trip.
